De La Salle linebacker Michael Hutchings was named Mr. Football by Cal-Hi Sports, an honor reserved for California’s top high school football player. The USC-bound senior joins Amani Toomer, D.J. Williams and Derek Landri as former Spartans to win the award.
Hutchings is the first East Bay player to earn the honor since Landri in 2001. He’s also the first linebacker to be named Mr. Football since Williams in 1999.
Hutchings, who led De La Salle to a fourth consecutive Open Division state title last month, recently participated at the U.S. Army All-American game in San Antonio.
