@ Matt Schwab thanks for your coverage of the women's side of East Bay soccer. Judging by the # of blog posts this year interest and participation is surging. Hopefully you are able to continue to provide your expert analysis and enthusiasm for all the players in the North Coast Section.

As Hope Solo and Piedmont's awesome keeper unfortunately know first hand it's next to impossible to win back to back games on PKs. Of note Lecce, a senior, was a back up for three years kept working hard and had the best week of her soccer career when it mattered most.

I think we can all agree high school soccer, especially at the smaller schools, is about players who work just as hard as their more talented and athletic counterparts getting the chance to compete. It doesn't matter what club or level you play at if you can help your school. And while the quality of high school soccer on the field,(often frantic and overly aggressive), is easy to criticize, all that really matters is that the players take away relationships and memories for a lifetime.

Thanks to all the players for your hard work and dedication to your teammates and schools. It was a fun season.

First, let's give credit where credit is due: St. Mary's keeper Lucia Lecce had a remarkable two-game stretch in the DII playoffs.
In the first round, Lecce, a senior, helped the No. 13 Panthers upset No. 4 Miramonte by saving 10 shots in regulation, four in overtime and two PKs. Then Lecce had 13 more saves and two stops in PKs in a triumph over No. 12 Albany.
Even though St. Mary's was bounced by BOD in the semis, Lecce was brilliant and heroic overall.

Who’s your best 11 this season? I’ve seen some good ones but not everyone. Thoughts?

Props to Monte Vista and Berkeley for an epic battle last night. I posted this on our site but have copied a follow-up piece here:

In a thriller, the No. 2 seeded Monte Vista High girls soccer team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat visiting No. 3 Berkeley Wednesday night in a penalty kick shootout in the North Coast Section Division I semifinals.
The stage is set for an all-Danville girls Division I championship match for the second straight year. Defending champion Monte Vista and last year’s runner-up San Ramon Valley will meet Saturday afternoon at Dublin High. The winner will hold the all-time record for girls soccer Division I soccer titles, with seven.

Monte Vista and Berkeley, an emerging section powerhouse with an explosive attack, fought to a 2-2 draw through regulation and 20 minutes of sudden death overtime.

“We were second best for 63 minutes,” Monte Vista coach Brett LeQuesne said on Thursday morning. “Lots of credit to Berkeley. They put us under a lot of pressure. Franny Cerny is a fantastic player for them. Big props to my girls who kept going forward, and it finally paid off. We really seemed to change gears after our first goal.”

After Cerny scored twice to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead, the Mustangs began their gallant run. Dana Outcalt scored in the 63rd minute, and the relentless Ashlynn Goerz tied it in the 76th minute off a Mallory Hromatko assist.

LeQuesne gave high marks to the “brilliant” Outcalt and Hromatko, who engineered the comeback. Moreover, Lynsey Hromatko, Mallory’s sister, showed great leadership ability in the back.

“Attacking-wise, Mal Hromatko was again superb. Her work rate is amazing. Ash Goerz also worked her butt off,” LeQuesne said.

No. 1 seed San Ramon Valley beat No. 4 Castro Valley 3-0 in the semifinals on Wednesday, getting second-half goals from Alexa Vandevanter and Summer Stamates to put the pesky Trojans away.
