Boys Volleyball: Division glance, Rankings, Standings

Some schools have had enrollment increase or decrease so there is a little bit of shifting within the three divisions. Let’s look at the top contenders from each division.

Division I
This Division is about as even as it can get right now. There are several teams who can say, right now, that they are legit NCS title contenders.
An early look says that Amador Valley, College Park, De La Salle, Deer Valley, Foothill, Logan, Mission San Jose and San Ramon Valley are the eight teams most likely to compete for an NCS title.
However, Dougherty Valley is now Division I and is playing well, and American and Monte Vista are two teams to keep an eye on.
This division is so even, it’s hard to pick an absolute favorite right now. But if pressed, it appears that Deer Valley and College Park, due to their depth and size, are the two best teams in Division I.

Division II
Campolindo should probably be considered a heavy favorite in Division II, especially with Drake dropping down to Division III. Washington moves into Division II and provides a new challenge for those schools who haven’t seen them much.
It would appear that Kennedy, Las Lomas and Northgate appear to be the teams most likely to compete with Campolindo at this point, but Division II is very undefined right now with a lot of question marks, so expect some teams to emerge as the season goes on.

Division III
St. Patrick-St. Vincent is still the favorite in this Division, but they did receive some more competition when Drake dropped down a Division. Early returns also say three BCL-East schools could prove difficult to beat as College Prep, Valley Christian and Bentley should all have good years, as well as Berean Christian and Moreau Catholic being teams to watch out for.

Here are the tournaments for the rest of the season.

March 16- Deer Valley
March 16- Norcal #1
March 23- Dougherty Valley
March 23- NorCal #2
March 30- NorCal #3
April 6- Foothill
April 6- Granite Bay
April 12- San Ramon Valley
April 12/13- Bellarmine
April 13- NorCal #4
April 13- Chico
April 20- Cal High
April 27- Northgate
April 27- Sacred Heart Cathedral

Things are starting to sort themselves out, but my hunch is that the teams ranked from No. 2-9 (all of them Division I teams) will continue to beat up on each other in league, non-league and tournament play and these rankings will shift quite a bit.
Campolindo’s strong showing at College Park showed they are the No. 1 team right now, and a matchup with Deer Valley now is probably what would be good to be seen.
AV jumps up to No. 4 after a big five-game win over SRV, while DLS gets back into the top five. Foothill, off to a strong start, jumps all the way to No. 6 while Logan keeps creeping up in the top 10 as they are still undefeated.
Dougherty Valley makes the top 10, while Monte Vista, Kennedy and Las Lomas move up a spot with American jumping into the rankings.

I think in Division III comments, you meant to say College Prep not College Park, right?

  • Matt Smith

Haha, yes, of course… I fixed it.

Look for Bentley to be in the rankings soon, they have one of the top middles in the country (May be playing outside for them), another stud middle from Pacific Rim 16s, one of the top 16s teams in the country, and plenty of size around them. I haven’t seen them play this year, and I have no idea what their ball control and setting look like but I have a feeling that they will be adequate enough to make them one of the three or four best D 3 teams, depending on how good Drake and College Prep really are. Valley Christian and SPSV being the top two of course, with Bentley and possibly Drake nipping at VC’s heels.

I thought someone said CP would wreck Campo. How strange, I do remember hearing game 4 was 25-11

  • VB

    Observations from the D Tourney:

Campo deserves #1, solid all around team.
DV dropped a game to SRV and lost to CP, should drop.
CP definitely goes up, crazy defense and great power hitters.
Amador and De La Salle should both drop as they both ended up in silver division. DLS lost to Rocklin and Amador, Amador lost to SRV in two.
Foothill deserving of their seed. Solid outing and definitely one of the better EBAL teams.
SRV should go up after taking down Amador and taking DV to three. Another EBAL contender.
Did not see much of Dougherty Valley.
American should rise in the rankings after their performance today. Battled hard with CP and they have the potential to be a force in the MVAL

Where is Moreau Catholic in the rankings, they’re 7-0 not just 2-0

  • Matt Smith

MC you’re looking at the previous week’s post.
