How does Dougherty Valley make playoffs over Granada. Granada beat them, had a better overall record, and had a .500 record in EBAL playing against teams like Amador, Cal and Monte Vista. Not to mention beating San Ramon Valley twice.

  • Rocket123

Can’t belive Alameda didn’t make this bracket. Made the league championship game by beating a very strong Arroyo team who you pick as #7 in this D-2 bracket. Alameda lost to Castro valley who is #4 in D-1 bracket 3-2 in the championship game. In this D-2 bracket, Alameda beat #3, #6, #7,#11,#16 and lost to #5 1-0 !!!SMH !!!!

  • local coach

I can understand Amador clearly being number 1 with no debate, but Cal high at number two I am not so sure? They beat Amador this year but they also lost twice to them. They also lost to Mitty, but Mitty is the number one team in ccs I think that their other loss was to Pleasant Grove. I know that the ebal is one of the best leagues top to bottom but there is quite a gap between Amador, Cal and then the rest of the teams in that league!

Re: Alameda not making it – coach must have screwed up

  • softball fan

If Cal high is not number 2, who is? They have 4 loses 3 of them to top 5 teams in the state. Their two loses to Amador were 1-0 and a 2-0 10 inning classic. Logan is always tough as well, so I guess one could make an arguement for them as a number 2, but the way the brackets are formated, 2,3, no big difference other than game location, home team is determined by a coin flip. In ethier case, there’s going to be some pretty good softball being played over the next couple of weeks.

  • CandyCrowley

@3. That’s fairly clear local coach, however, Clet took Cal to extra innings Friday with a mega-gutsy, bottom of the 7th, suicide squeeze with the bases jammed to tie it 1-1. Cal’s loss to AV the week before was in the 10th when the Grizz, twice, failed the sac-bunt to move over the tie-breaker runner. Then Grauer’s walkoff bomb. P’s at the top are very good; execution and especially who gets hits will determine NCS.

  • eastbay fan

I don’t think Granada was eligible since they were at 500 in league and overall. Mot sure of their division 1 recoed though.
Alameda must’ve not submitted their paperwork in time. They are D-II, but would have gotten in over San Lorenzo for sure based on head-to-head.

  • local coach

Hey Softball Fan I was just thinking maybe Logan also but you are right not a huge deal. I think that Logan is ranked pretty high in the nation also? Candy it just seems to me that Cal high has issue scoring runs period! Didn’t they only beat foothill 2-0. I don’t know where foothill is in the standings. They better find their bats quickly or they could get upset.

  • Softball Coach

Here is my take after seeing them all.

Amador is by far the best, unless you score 3 runs against Amador they will be tough to beat. Cal compares real strong it matters who gets a run or two. Logan’s pitcher will get hit, they will have a tough time beating either one with their offense. Carondelet should have been Cal the last game but another missed squeeze bunt sign stopped that from happening. You will see Cal versus Amador for the finals. Unless James Logan can get their short game working against Cal (take the hint). Granada did not hit any of the 3 qualifiers, Overall has to be over .500, League over. 500 or Division over .500. they were .500 in all. This is why their season is over. Freedom has the pitching, light offense, Heritage has the bats but no pitching. Monte Vista can be a darkhorse here. Castro Valley can play and their coach has them ready.

    Amador will win:

    Division 2:

Livermore is better than Clayton Valley and Concord and should have been ranked higher, they play the toughest schedule of them all. Petaluma ad Alhambra both deserve toeir rankings. Carondelet is not a 10 seed and see if they can prove it against Arroyo. should be an interesting match up. Pinole Valley is too high. Shipley can carry the team but they will need to score runs. Clayton Valley is a lot like Concord last year lots of seniors. They will need to score runs. American can play a tough game and open some eyes in the first round. Livermore and Carondelet may have an edge becaause they have played 15 of their games each against EBAL opponents which are better than many teams in this field. Their pitching will keep them in the tourney. Can’t wait to see how this plays out.

  • mckbooth

Good pitching will always negate good hitting. It sounds like Cal better put on their bunting gloves. Although good pitching can negate that also :+)

  • Oh Boy

With all respect to Cal, after 3 games vs. Amador I’m not hoping for that finals match up. I think Amador took the rubber match and the title for this year.

I’d be pretty excited to see another Logan-AV championship game even though it sounds like (I haven’t seen them play) Logan may be down a bit this year. Amador will probably take a ring however it comes, but it will probably be even sweeter to get it over Logan who took one from them last year. And the 2011 championship game was a CLASSIC in my opinion

  • Prep Fan

Cal and AV tied for the EBAL title this year at 13-1, as they split their league games. The other meeting was outside of league. AV won the second meeting which got them the automatic berth for NCS, but it’s not like that was ever in doubt. AV is once again the heavy favorite, but either Logan or Cal could take them down again if they can play their A games and take advantage of a few breaks.

  • eastbay fan

Looking at the ncs site, Alameda did apply for an at-large but were passed over for San Lorenzo. I guess head-to-head doesn’t play as big of a factor as it used to.

  • Rocket123

San Lorenzo over Alameda, what a joke !!

  • Frank

Turns out that although Alameda had a 8-5 record in the WACC, they didn’t have a winning record in upper division league play (5-5), so they don’t qualify. Something is not right here.

  • softball fan

Be careful people, last year everyone wanted to crown AV NCS champs before the season started and as it went along, one would have thought that there was no reason to even play the chamionship game, but look what happened. Prep fan believes that Cal and Logan need breaks and their A game to beat AV, I agree, but AV can’t show up with their B game against either of those teams and expect an easy go of it. No AV vs Logan match up thus far this season, but AV vs Cal, 3 games; 1-0, 1-0, 2-0, when those two play, whoever scores wins, it’s been that way for the past three years.

  • Prep Fan

Be careful indeed. SRV shocks AV to move to the semis. Wednesday’s Cal/Logan winner will be the heavy favorite to take the NCS D1 crown.

  • CandyCrowley

That’s why they play the games. AV chances evaporated when their star pitcher went down with an ankle. The Grizz may not need the much desired offense they were searching for if their #1 can answer the call. The Colts will be pumped though after their boys romped over #3 seed Cal today.

  • Oh Boy

    “Down goes Frazier!”

And that’s why they play the game…

  • softballdad

Even without their #1 pitcher they should’ve been able to handle SRV. The’re #2 is still a very accomplished pitcher. Definitely under achieved this year. Coach of the Year???

  • EBstaff

    Softballdad:
Your comment isn’t far off. Borchard is a good coach, but wonder if the coaching change had something to do with it. AV just didn’t seem to have that same firepower as last year. Their hitting really tailed off from a year ago.

  • FOG

    Petaluma goes down… Nice… : )

  • local coach

Logan 1 Cal high 0 final!!!

  • randyc415

Congrats to Coach Megan Coddington and Concord HS for winning a 3rd NCS Championship in 4 years. Back to Back Champs!

  • CandyCrowley

Concord aiming for the stars! Congrats to Logan. Cal High? Two D1 pitchers, D1 pos player plus anemic offense = bridesmaids again. Thorson’s teams had better hitting.

  • sftballfan

Curious to see if any other east bay teams will finish in the state or national rankings other than Logan.
