Former Monte Vista High star Joey Wagman completed an brilliant senior season at Cal Poly with his school-record 13th pitching win on May 31.
Wagman improved to 13-3 as the Mustangs beat San Diego 9-2 in the opening game of the Division I Los Angeles Regional. Wagman allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
The Mustangs were eliminated from the regional over the weekend with losses to UCLA and San Diego.
Wagman, who led the Big West Conference in strikeouts and wins during the regular season, played in the outfield at Monte Vista, which had a dream pitching staff composed of Stanford’s Mark Appel, Oregon’s Christian Jones and Washington’s Steven Swift.
Wagman credited his teammates with his pitching record after he surpassed Garrett Olson (12 wins, 2005) in the record books.
“It’s pretty surreal,” said Wagman in a school release. “You don’t really imagine yourself breaking a record like that, especially when it is held by someone as good as Garrett Olson. Obviously, it’s a great feeling, but I wouldn’t be here without my teammates.”
