Calhoun commits to USC

El Cerrito High football standout Derik Calhoun orally committed to USC on Wednesday.
Calhoun, a 6-foot, 215-pound outside linebacker, announced his decision at Nike’s The Opening, an elite camp in Beaverton, Oregon.
“Getting a degree from USC, that’s just the main part,” said Calhoun on ESPNU. “It’s family.
“They expressed to me that it will be a real good chance for me starting because I’m graduating early.”
According to ESPNU, Calhoun’s finalists were Arizona State, Cal, Miami and UCLA in addition to USC.
Calhoun is a four-star recruit and is ranked seventh in the nation at his position by Rivals.com. Calhoun was a first-team all-East Bay selection by the Bay Area News Group last year as a junior.

was thinking of SJB SoCal when reading about their coach negotiating for a 13 game with dls

  • renegades10

@junior, all teams know what they have and do not have coming back and what their chances are looking like for the coming year. And let’s face it, although the actual top team in SoCal changes year to year, the teams that are competing for the top spot rarely do. Why was it Oaks and Westlake that decided to play two NorCal teams each last year? Why wasn’t it CC or LBP or MD? I do believe that both figured that they were not likely to win the Pac-5, so they had nothing to lose. Like I said the current system will not encourage many regular season matchups between the top teams from either side of the state, DLS included. And they will play the top team (or at least 1 one of the top teams although the regional now gives it more likelihood to be the former) at the end in the Open SBG…can you really discredit that? We would see more NorCal/SoCal heavyweight matchups if we had a true state playoff. Right now we don’t, so the goal is to qualify for the best regional you can and the best way to do that is to take care of the teams (sections) you compete against for those spots. DLS will likely continue to play OOS games (at least I hope this season is a blip in that regard) to provide the challenge that they usually look for in the schedule. I think there were two factors that played into this year’s scheduling and they should not be an issue next year.

I believe you’re mistaking my comments for saying that DLS is loading up with cupcakes to qualify for the regional. I’d say that is not true, anybody knows that St. Mary’s, Del Oro, Serra, etc…have been solid programs for YEARS. Serra has given DLS two of it’s closest games in NorCal, and St. Mary’s played us tough last year and even the great 2010 team had their struggles for a half with the Rams. Del Oro took out a good Logan last year and keep in mind that Del Oro was missing their all everything RB Brandon Monroe. Not to mention DO has had a lot of success over the years and play that physical, smashmouth style that I think you would agree gives teams a much better chance of playing with DLS, especially if they aren’t going to out-athlete them like a Cal.

I don’t entirely disagree with you, but for every one year turn=around aka, Troy Murphy, there is a Brian Hamilton, a guy who built the program over course of 3 years.

@202- It is more risky to schedule vs a potential Regional berth opponent than the State game opponent.

“or it takes 3 to 5 years to get rid of the old regime mentality”

This is one Im with chalk on.. the best way is to meet it with blunt force trauma to the DOME lol. Itll change quickly

  • Souz

    Metaphorically of course

  • MiraMan

    Souz,

I’m pretty used to Chalk’s departures from reality, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

I can think of several reasons that it will USUALLY take 3-5 years to turn around a program. First, if the Juniors and Seniors have bad habits or have no habits at all (i.e. they don’t train much in the off season are are lazy at practice), then its almost physically impossible to turn those players into star athletes in one season or even two. An incoming coach will often focus on the incoming freshman or freshman moving up in hopes of changing their attitude. Second, in many situations the kids have stopped coming out in big numbers. You can shout platitudes, but that’s just not going to change easily. Finally, in terms of “blunt force trauma” (metaphorically, of course) you might find that the kids you are screaming at have had two or three head coaches before you that came in with big talk and weren’t up to the challenge, so the kids will naturally take a show-me attitude.

Other posters mentioned Hamilton at Concord taking time to turn the program around. What about Macy at Campo. It took 12 seasons for him to get above .500. I actually like the example of Murphy at Clayton Valley. He took CV from a sleepy 6-5 to 12-2 and section champion in one season, but not before he accepted the job and then bailed on Ygnacio Valley once he saw it was a multi-year rebuilding job!

Every coach would like to turn a program around in a season or two, I just don’t see that being the norm.

  • MtEdenHomer

MiraMan is right. Not every place is the same. It’s completely dependent on how bad of a situation you walk into and how willing the kids are to change it. Plenty of situations where the kids at a school just don’t care enough about the program to save it. Can’t win with them. Build up a core of younger guys and help shape them into successful upper classmen, then win.

  • Old Former Meddling Coach

Gotta agree with… MiraMan! Jet Pride!

  • Souz

I am not tryin to say that coaches are one and done after a season.. I am just sayin that its not impossible to turn a program around and lying back as “it takes so and so long to turn a program around” as a crutch really hurts some of the deserving seniors of that year. I think you just gotta get after it as hard as you can (not saying there are coaches that dont) and turn that thing around. I think the first year is the year where you gotta work the hardest.

  • chalktalk

    5150 who knew

  • http://TheSchoolmarm'sCaliforniaHighSchoolFootball TheSchoolmarm

A few weeks ago I did some research and came up with power rating stats for most of the fb divisions in CIF sections.
If anyone’s interested I put them on #6: JOE MIXON ANNOUNCES HIS TOP 10 AUG. 2 post.

PS. Although I lined my stats up in evenly spaced columns when I typed them in, East Bay Prep Corner’s system didn’t line them up evenly, so they’re difficult to read. I’ll probably use a different format when I show CIF D2 and CIF D3.

  • redandblue2

    Miraman,

Time and again you spout statistics that have no factual basis. You state “it took 12 seasons for him to get above .500″. In fact, Kevin Macy’s record the past 16 seasons at Campolindo is 127-65. His 8th season, Campo played for the section championship (and lost) to Bishop O’Dowd.

Try doing a little research before making stuff up to prove your point.

  • MiraMan

    RedandBlue2,

I should have used the word “overall” when discussing Coach Macy’s record as in “his overall record was not above .500 until his 12th season”. I stand by my comment and statistics as being as accurate as the internet can provide. As would be obvious to an intelligent reader, he certainly would have had winning records in some seasons leading up to season 12 in order to get to a .500 record by season 12.

If my comments are too confusing, I can add some stick people and arrows so you can follow along!

I’ve been spending more time in Calaveras County and elsewhere this summer. Should be back in town more when the season starts. Plan to be at the Folsom-SR game if SR can win at least 1 of their opening games and the Bulldogs are at least 2-1. If not, I’m going over to Oakdale to see the Mustangs take on Paraclete from Lancaster Aug. 20.
