Bishop O’Dowd football squad looks to reload

OAKLAND — With only five returning starters total, this season could be viewed as a rebuilding year for the Bishop O’Dowd High football team.

But coach Hardy Nickerson doesn’t exactly see it that way.

“We’ve got some players who are stepping up. We are not looking at it as rebuilding, we are just reloading a little bit,” said Nickerson, starting his fourth season as coach of the Dragons.

First season with no players that have experience with Perenon’s program. We shall see what Nickerson has to bring to the table long term.

Actually, last season’s O’Dowd squad had no players who were on Coach Perenon’s last team there (2009 season). King, Gomes, Miroglio were all in 9th grade that year and were on either the JV team or the Frosh team. I think we all have a glimpse of what Nickerson has to bring to the table. The LB Lyles was a transfer from salesian last year. Wonder how Nightengale feels about his former Cal teammate poaching one of his kids? BTW, was it just me or did anyone else witness Nickerson heave the gatorade bucket at the conclusion of the loss to SL last year? And then letting his players “have it” on the field before heading for the bus ride back to Oakland? IMO, rough road ahead for Nickerson. He must have had a sense that it was coming. No wonder he made a hard run at the Menlo College job.

Here we go. Bishop O’Dowd will finally see what nickerson has to offer because he has held the reins the last few years. Such high expectations last year and they ended up with the same win loss record as mt eden. Lets not forget all the tools that BOD has compared to Mt Eden. As a former player i will never accept nickerson as a head coach. Former NFL player that thinks he can do whatever he wants. Thanks Coach Nickerson for destroying a football family so swiftly. Oh well GO MONARCHS!

O’Dowd has plenty of talent returning, and their JV team was very good last year, so they should be fine. The puzzling thing about Nickerson’s tenure at O’Dowd is that it has been his defense that has been their weakness when it came to big games. In the embarrassing San Leandro loss last year, Hardy single-handedly lost the game by failing to scheme his defense to stop the over-matched, winless Pirates (and then he took over the offensive play calling at the end of the game and effectively shut down his own team). He has never been comfortable with a passing team, even though that was his where his talent was (Mirgolio, Gomes, King), so now that those guys are gone, it will be interesting to see if he goes to his preferred smashmouth style. I have heard that their turnout was poor this year for the JV team for some reason – not sure if that is just a sign of the times or a reflection on Hardy. I know he is not accommodating to dual sport players, so he may be losing kids to other sports.

I was at the game last night vs Valley Christian….wow. Bishop displayed an amazing amount of poor sportsmanship. Penalty flag on most plays, towards the end of the last qrtr, Refs pretty much threw their hands up. What kind of leadership leaves a player like that, with so much anger and loss of self control, in the game? Those of us at the game know whom I speak of. Seriously, where was the coach?
