ALBANY — The first question for Steve Werren is obvious — how does the football talent level at Albany High match up with what he was used to when he coached at El Cerrito, when he was an assistant (and head coach for one season) from 30 seasons ending in 2007?

“The talent level is different but the schedule is also different. At least the way the schedule is set up there can be competitive equity,” said Werren, the new football coach at Albany. “There’s a drop off in speed. However, the enthusiasm, the attentiveness of the kids has been outstanding.”

Hi Phil, any idea what seasons he coached? That’s one hell of a record to have. I’d like to add his info to my website.

Milo coached his best team at richmond high in 1970. they went 9-0-1 the tie came in the first game against sunnyvale, a very good team. the team was ranked # 1 in EB and Norcal.
They had many allstars, all EB Jerge at FB ( went to Cal) also Norcal back of the year.
Hamilton all EB running back of hurdler fame .
    Mogonnman all EB line
    Salcido all EB line
QB ronald young twin brother of roland of Salesian fame.
The team was big and fast

EC and BHS started that 1970 season both 5-0, EC finishing 6-3 and BHS 5-4. St. Mary’s of Berkeley finished at 7-2 and outranked both EC and BHS.
EC broke Alameda’s 29 game win streak that year, Williams a FB went 67 yds, around end to score and win game. Sammy Burns was the running back and had a big game. Vallejo came into that season with a 47-0-5 record with great coach bruno pellagrini, they lost to EC and St. Marys that year.

i think there’s a reason werren was a coordinator for so long.. i was on the one var team he coached, and he didnt get the job by choice mind you.. he seemed to not have any people skills whatsoever.. the only speeches i remember that were given were by george austin who didnt need to be there at that time… a lot of talent went to waste that year, there was even a long running story of him drop kicking a player in the head during a practice in his past years at EC… good luck albany.. hopefully milo will be able to handle things
