Girls Volleyball: League Favorites, Rankings, Standings

With league play already started for some leagues, and with it just around the corner for the rest of them, let’s take a look at who the favorites are in each league.

BCL-East

From the early goings, it looks like a two-team race with Head-Royce and College Prep. Those two will play Tuesday as a front-runner could be unveiled. Still waiting to see if Athenian is a team that can challenge, or perhaps Redwood Christian, given that they already have played Head-Royce and College Prep, and could be in line right behind them.

BVAL

Heritage, at this point, seems like a clear favorite. Perhaps the best candidate on the east side of the tunnel to go unbeaten in league. However, Deer Valley and Liberty have successful histories, so let’s not count them out. Freedom is playing better of late as well.

DFAL

Campolindo still looks like the heavy favorite here, but the gap might be narrowing. Dougherty Valley and Acalanes appear to be much improved and Dublin is a solid team as well. Las Lomas can’t be counted out despite a slower start. Campo is the pick to win the league, but they could be challenged.

DVAL

Is there another league that is more wide open? Northgate certainly should be considered the favorite as they have a lot of heart, and have some talented players injured at the moment. However, Clayton Valley, Concord and College Park all look like they could be in the running this year and perhaps a changing of the guard as a team not named Northgate or Berean Christian has ever won this league.

EBAL

The league is extremely balanced, as usual, but maybe even more so this year. Monte Vista does seem like the early favorite, but don’t expect anyone in this league to go undefeated. Six teams have legit title shots as Carondelet, Cal and SRV should be taken very seriously and you can’t count out the Pleasanton schools, AV and Foothill, who can beat anyone. Granada is a team you should expect to see get better during the season, and they will be in a lot of battles this year.

MVAL

It would appear early on that Moreau Catholic is a very heavy favorite to win the league outright this year, after tying for the league title last year. It seems three teams could easily challenge Moreau as Irvington, Logan and Newark Memorial seem to be the most likely.

TCAL-Rock

Expect a very tight two-team race here as Albany has the stigma of being unbeatable in this league, but St. Joe’s could be poised to take them down. St. Pat’s cant be counted out, but it really looks to be between Albany and St. Joe’s this year.

TCAL-Stone

I’ll take anyone’s guess here. Swett won the league a year ago, but nothing is known about them. No team will go unbeaten.

WACC-Foothill

Bishop O’Dowd is the other team, along with Heritage, that has a great chance to go unbeaten in league. However, there are very solid rumblings about Berkeley. Young, talented and playing hard under new coach Jorge Penate. Piedmont is also another team that could finish in the top two in this league.

WACC-Shoreline

San Lorenzo seems very improved, and along with defending champion Arroyo, those are the two teams I would look for to win this side of the league.

Rankings

A lot of movement in the rankings this week. More than usual. A subtle jump in the top five as Cal hops over Campolindo. In the rest of the top ten, Heritage moves up two spots after SRV and AV both have losses this week, while Moreau climbs up to No. 8. St. Joe’s debuts at No. 10 after starting the season a perfect 7-0.
AV drops to No. 11, while Foothill stands pat at No. 12. The Albany Tournament helped with the last three spots as they fell into place based on results with Acalanes debuting at No. 13, with Albany and Head-Royce in tow.
It was a tough decision with Miramonte, who had a great win over AV and also beat College Prep, but still need to see a little more consistency before ranking them.
In the MVAL, Logan and Newark both seem worthy of consideration in the rankings, but not enough matches yet to tell.
