Girls Volleyball: The wacky EBAL & DFAL, Rankings, Standings

By Matt Smith

We’re one week into league play, and six of the eight teams in the EBAL already have a loss, while four of the seven teams in the DFAL have a loss.

Nobody expects anyone to go unbeaten in the EBAL, but I don’t think anyone thought only two teams would be 2-0 after the first week. This league is as even as it has been in years.
Foothill has beaten Cal and Carondelet, and Cal went out and beat Monte Vista. All the while, San Ramon Valley has not dropped a set and won the Concord Tournament. Perhaps the Wolves are emerging as the favorite even after graduating so many key players from last year.
There is a chance nobody will be undefeated as San Ramon Valley plays Cal and Foothill in the same week.
In the DFAL, Campolindo might be a heavy favorite, but what to make of the rest of the teams? Five others seem to be legitimate playoff contenders, who will spend a good deal of the season beating each other and moving in and out of the rankings.
At the beginning of the week, it was thought Dougherty Valley might be the team to challenge Campolindo. By Tuesday, it looked like Dublin after they beat Dougherty. After Thursday, when Acalanes beat Dublin, it looked like there would be a mad scramble for positioning in the league.
Miramonte has beaten Dougherty Valley which tells us that six teams in this league will be battling each other week in and week out.

Rankings

To put it simply, this season has so much parity that the rankings were turned on their behind this week, and it will likely happen a lot this season.
With Monte Vista losing to Cal, but Cal losing to Foothill, and Foothill also beating Carondelet. It was hard to organize the EBAL teams. Also, it seemed Foothill would be in line for a huge jump, but they didn’t play great at the Concord Tournament.
So MV drops one spot, Cal stays put despite the loss, thanks to the win at the Irvington Tournament. SRV jumps up two spots after winning the Concord Tournament as they will face off with Cal on Tuesday.
Carondelet isn’t necessarily deserving a three-spot drop, but after losing to SRV, and after Campo beat SRV in three, I had to put them behind the Cougars and Wolves, for now.
Foothill moves up two spots, despite the inconsistency, while Berkeley comes into the rankings for the first time. Look for this team to keep climbing up the rankings.
Also, Miramonte comes into the rankings after beating Dougherty Valley. Acalanes, Dublin, Dougherty Valley and Miramonte will likely all beat each other and go in and out of the rankings all season.

Bishop O’Dowd will only get better as they integrate the transfer from San Leandro High, Bryanna Davis, into the line-up

  • Matt Smith

I’ve heard good things about Bryanna. And I can’t wait for them to play against Berkeley.

  • mikevb

Washington is now has a 6-8 overall record with going 4-1 in the Irvington tournament.

Matt – Good to see you at this again for another year… Foothill had two nice home wins last week, first on Tuesday in five sets over Cal then on Thursday in another five sets over Carondelet. After 10 games in 2 days, and this early in the season, no wonder they didn’t look so good at the Concord tourney :) I think home court is really gonna matter this year in EBAL with all these teams so closely matched.
