Girls Volleyball: Playoff Picture, Rankings, Standings

The regular season ends in two weeks, as the playoffs are just around the corner. Let’s take a look at how the playoff picture in each division is looking for the teams in the East Bay.

Division I

Locks: Berkeley, California, Castro Valley, Dougherty Valley, Heritage, Irvington, Monte Vista, San Ramon Valley

Likely In: Deer Valley, Logan, San Leandro

On The Bubble: Amador Valley, Foothill, Liberty

With only 20 DI teams in the NCS, this is not going to be a full 16-team bracket. So what that means, is that if you get eligible, you’ll get in. Deer Valley, Logan and San Leandro are a couple of games above .500 in league and just need to keep it that way and they are in.
I kept AV and FH on the bubble because despite being two games over .500 in a category, they play in the EBAL so it’s not a given. Liberty is also two games over in league, but plays Heritage and DV again, teams they’ve already lost to.

Division II

Locks: Carondelet, Clayton Valley, College Park, Concord, Dublin, Las Lomas, Maria Carrillo, Montgomery, Mt. Eden, Newark Memorial, Northgate, Redwood

Likely In: Arroyo, Windsor

On The Bubble: Casa Grande, Washington

Same situation as DI, where there are just 21 teams in DII, so getting eligible likely gets you in. It looks like 16 teams could get in, if both Casa Grande and Washington qualify. Washington needs to play better than .500 the rest of the way. Arroyo is likely in because it is 6-1 in WACC Shoreline games, while Mt. Eden is likely a lock as they are the favorites to win that league.

Division III

Locks: Acalanes, Albany, Bishop O’Dowd, Campolindo, Del Norte, Hercules, Petaluma, Pinole Valley, Sonoma Valley

Likely In: Eureka

On The Bubble: Analy, Miramonte, Novato, Sir Francis Drake, Terra Linda

This division likely won’t have 16 teams. I do have Hercules and Pinole Valley as locks because of their league record, and the fact that there aren’t enough teams to fill out the bracket. The interesting team here is Miramonte. Clearly good enough to be in, the question is whether they can get eligible. At 10-10 overall and 5-3 in league, they just need to play .500 or better the rest of the way.

Division IV

Locks: Moreau Catholic, Piedmont, St. Patrick-St. Vincent

Likely In: Swett

On The Bubble: Berean Christian, Salesian

Just sticking with East Bay teams for the next two divisions, as the information becomes harder to find for smaller schools out of the area. Swett is likely a lock because of their league record, pending the eligibility of other teams in the division. Berean and Salesian need to win a couple of more times than they lose, to have a chance.

Division V

Locks: College Prep, Head-Royce, St. Joseph Notre Dame

Likely In:

On The Bubble: Athenian, Holy Names

College Prep, Head-Royce and St. Joe’s are all guaranteed to have a shot to get past Branson in the playoffs.

Rankings

It was tempting to move SRV down after a loss to Berkeley at Northgate, but couldn’t justify moving Monte Vista ahead of them, and couldn’t jump O’Dowd or Campo that many spots based on one pool play loss in a tournament.
Heritage moves back into the top five as this team will be a very dangerous one in the playoffs. Albany climbs to No. 7 as several teams ahead of them lost. Acalanes makes a big jump to No. 9 after a good week in DFAL play, and a good showing at Northgate.
Miramonte gets back in the rankings with wins over Dougherty Valley and Las Lomas last week.

    Hey Matt,
Wondering how Moreau is ranked higher than Newark Memorial, after NM beating Moreau last week? Thanks

  • Matt Smith

Because the rankings consider the entire season, and the two teams split this year. Also, I had Moreau ranked 8th before the loss. Dropping them five spots was pretty harsh, but couldn’t drop them seven spots just to have Newark ahead of them.

  • Ballkicker10

Thanks for clearing it up, Matt. And thanks for all the East Bay sports rankings, etc.

  • LoudFan

Can anyone share results of the Northgate tournament?
