De La Salle lone East Bay team seeded first in NCS

The De La Salle High football team was the only East Bay squad to receive a No. 1 seed for the North Coast Section playoffs in Sunday’s selection and seeding meeting.

The Spartans (10-0), who will get a bye in the first round, have won 21 consecutive NCS titles. They were seeded above No. 2 Pittsburg and No. 3 California in Division I.  The playoffs will kick off on Friday and Saturday in five divisions.

Three East Bay schools were seeded No. 2: Clayton Valley Charter (9-1), in Division 2; Campolindo (10-0), in Division 3; and Valley Christian-Dublin (7-3), in Division 5.

Casa Grande (10-0) and Marin Catholic-Kentfield (10-0) got the top seeds in Division 2 and Division 3, along with Middleton (9-1) in Division 5.

De La Salle, which defeated East Bay Athletic League champion California 55-0 last week, has won the last four California Open Division Bowl Championships.

Defending NCS Division 2 champion Clayton Valley Charter, under coach Tim Murphy, enters the playoffs with its offense in high gear. The Eagles have won nine straight after falling 34-14 to De La Salle in their season opener. Clayton Valley scored a combined 106 points in wins over playoff teams Concord and Northgate to close the regular season. The Eagles routed Rancho Cotate 35-7 in last year’s section final before falling 27-24 to Oakdale in the Northern California Division II championship game.

Miramonte is the third seed in Division 2, Concord is No. 5, Northgate No. 6, and Las Lomas No. 7. College Park is seeded 11th.

EBAL trailer Livermore (2-8), which had two nonleague wins over Division 2 opponents, did not get a Division 2 berth. Alameda (6-4) received the 16th seed in Division 2.

James Logan (8-2), the Division I runner-up in 2012, received the fifth seed in Division I and will host No. 12 Liberty (5-5) on Saturday. EBAL rivals Granada and Amador Valley, who met on Nov. 1 with the Matadors’ prevailing 42-21, will meet again at Granada on Friday. The winner will face De La Salle in the quarterfinals.

No. 6 San Ramon Valley and No. 3 California, the EBAL co-champs in 2012, appear on a collision course in the Division I quarterfinals.

El Cerrito (8-2), the 2012 NCS Division 3 runner-up, looks to have a clear path to the semifinals as the No. 3 seed. If the seeds hold up, the Gauchos would face Campolindo in the semifinals.

Deer Valley (9-1) landed the fourth seed in Division I, the Wolverines’ best seed since they were No. 2 in 2009 and fell to Pittsburg in the quarterfinals. Deer Valley will host No. 13 Castro Valley on Friday.

Seeding seems right … To bad College Park plays Northgate in the 1st round as they are from the same league.

every one claims they r so worried about child safety.
1 vs 16 is like putting a heavy weight against a feather weight, not suppose to happen
SO ALL TOP SEEDS make ur opponents pay 4 insulting YOU!!! AND MAKING U PLAY A GAME THEIR NOT WORTHY OF BEING IN.
MAYBE next year they wont try this crap…
1 real football players don’t run into u they run thru U

    2. when catching a wet ball stop the tip of the ball with one hand balance the ball with the other…
IN ORDER TO CATCH ANY BALL U MUST STOP THE BALL FROM ROTATING

  • Tj

I agree.. 16 team brackets are dumb.. takes away from the prestige of being a playoff team. More teams make it than not.

  • Perkin

Travesty of justice that Campolindo got the 2 seed. I guess all those North Bay teams made phone calls and banded together. I know that a 2 seed is as a 1 seed since they host the first 3 rounds but its just the principle.

I remember coaches asking me ” are u hurt or are u injured.
HURT FEELINGS are something a football has to play with.
mental toughness as well as physical toughness IS JUST PART OF THE JOB. If the 6’5″ 350lbs lineman in Miami mental was so injured THEY SHOULD HAVE FOUND OUT IN THE PSYC test… I think u can only b bullied if u cant protect urself…

I find it a bit interesting that Miramonte got the #3 D2 seed. Seems Montgomery, Concord, even Northgate should have been seeded ahead of them.
Isn’t the NCS commissioner a former Miramonte principal?

  • EB Prep Fan

Really? A Lil home cookin for the D3 leapers?

  • Prep Fan 1

Maybe Miramonte got the #3 D2 seed because they have played the toughest schedule of all D2 playoff teams (18.8 per Calpreps), and have the best win as well (Analy). Sometimes strength of schedule and quality wins count.

  • Robs

I agree! Clayton Valley should be #4 or 5 IMO. They played a bunch of nobody’s besides Concord and northgate. (Even those teams are nobody’s IMO.) weak division, weak non-league, and the game against DLS shoulda been worse had it been played later. Casa deserves top spot. If Mira played in another division without Campo, they’d be #2.

  • EB FB Coach

Really? Concord and Northgate are nobody’s? What the hell are you smoking? What about their 72-14 beatdown of College Park? Clayton is where they should be, the #2 seed.

  • Nick

Running up the score on a far less superior team doesn’t prove anything… Just like what you guys did to all those Oakland schools…

  • Ryan Anderson

CalHi Sports, MaxPreps, Prep2Prep and the SF Chron all have Mira ranked ahead of all 3 of those teams. And no the NCS Commish is not a former MHS principal.

  • Pez

First of all, what a dumb name for the article. Of course a East Bay team is the D1 top seed, because ALL D1 teams except Santa Rosa are from the East Bay. In D2 and D3, the East Bay is well represented, but MC got the nod over undefeated Campo and Casa got the nod over CVC. Not particularly relevant!

Second, CVC deserves 2nd seed in D2. I mean, I don’t like it, but at 9-1 with wins over Northgate, Concord and College Park they deserve it despite their super-weak pre-league schedule…more than anyone else at least.

Third, I think the seeding is pretty good this year. I would have put Campo ahead of MC, Northgate ahead of Concord and Rancho Cotate ahead of Las Lomas, but all in all pretty good.

Fourth, D2 doesn’t look easy to me. Casa at the top deserves as much respect as Campo or MC. Then I also look at #8-#14 with Rancho Cotate, Windsor, Washington, College Park, Newark Memorial, American, Tennyson. They are far better than their D3 peers. From the #2-#5 seed you could debate that D3 is stronger, but aside from that D2 holds up pretty good.

Fourth, I like the 16 team brackets. It gives the good teams a warm up game and gives some marginal programs a chance to make the playoffs. I don’t have a problem giving a lower-ranked team a chance to get crushed by a power program. Also, if I was a coach I would hate the bye week.

  • Perkin

Teams do not have to apply it is their option.

  • EB Prep Fan

Move on and quit constantly justifying your jump with crap like “D2 doesn’t look easy to me.” You might as well just leave it alone and let it drift off…….if you can’t admit it’s an escape move….then don’t even touch on it anymore.

  • Perkin

Yeah Mira is definitely insecure about the move. Absolutely no reason to have to justify it.

  • mtzman

What do you want CVCHS to do? The entire second half against College
Park was played with a running clock and they used their 2nd and 3rd
stringers. The beat up CP because they are a really good team and fully
    deserve 1 or 2 seed.

  • Nick

    No…. Poor man’s DLS.

  • Perkin

What does that mean? “Poor man’s DLS.” I still have gotten no clarification on that. I can only assume that is a hell of a compliment. If its meant in a derogatory way then I would like to hear what you mean.

Fear is an emotion DANGER is subjective, based on ur knowledge and power, HOW AFFAID R YOU “”" IN BETWEEN THE LINES”"”. coach NERVOUS IS SOMETHING U FELL WHEN UR NOT Prepared!!!!

U should never lose either WIN or LEARN!!!

  • chalk talk

I want u to imagine every football player has a bubble around them. The bubble represents range of motion and POWER. people with agility maintain their power well on the perimeter of the bubble. players with less agility are more stable towards the core. IF U ARE AN AGILITY PLAYER THE OBJECT IS TO GET THE awkward player to extend himself so he is weaker.
This concept work on so many phases of the game. WHEN SOME one runs the power sweep or toss I.E. bellermine or CVC. “”" u blitz the corner and roll the safety over the top. This will extend the area they need to protect causing the core blocking to become unstable. THE CORNER SHOULD BE FAST ENOUGH TO GET INTO THE BACK FIELD AND cause major problems…
    ( WHERE IS ISLAND CHIEF)
ITS A ShAME U DIDNT GET TO SEE ME PLAY ON sundays!!!

  • David Sparkle

and CP beat concord. CVC I heard should have lost to Concord.( 2 dropped balls) 1 game means nothing. and u cant compare 1 game to others. CVC good, but not as good the CP score indicates..ie see concord score

  • Nick

Yep, couldn’t agree more. If Concord had a kicker they would have beaten them.

  • EB FB Coach

Maybe Miramonte should have the #2 seed, but they lost to Campo and Marin. CVC lost to DLS. I don’t see how anyone else could even be in the argument. David, what seed should CVC be?

  • redandblue2

Maybe it’s because I am a fan of Campolindo football, but I find it pretty funny two D3 teams who petitioned up are facing each other in the first round of the D2 playoffs. What’s more, these same two teams faced each other in the first round of the D3 playoffs just a year ago! I’m speaking, of course, of the upcoming game between Tennyson & Miramonte. Last year, Miramonte pasted the Lancers 35-7 in Hayward.
I’m pretty sure the motivation for Tennyson for petitioning up to D2 was to get away from playing any of the top teams from D3…….and look what happens……..a date with Miramonte; deja vu, all over again. Who says the NCS seeding committee doesn’t have a sense of humor.

  • Pez

It’s even more, er uh, funny than that. Mira has played Tenny the last 2 years. More importantly, one of the motivations to move up for Mira was to avoid playing a D3 winner of a “B” league (ala Hercules, Tenny or Eureka) and avoid a first round away game since Mira was not going to win DFAL. Now we end up playing the same team as the last two years AND have to play it away! URGHHHH!

  • Michael Williams

    a

  • Prince Smalls

I guess it was interesting that Miramonte got the number 3 seed, seeing that at the end they were #1!

  • Prince Smalls

Insecure all the way to a Championship!

  • Perkin

Who are you? Didn’t you use to coach at Deanza????

  • Prince Smalls

I’m the defensive coordinator for the division II champs. Who are you?

  • Perkin

You were at DeAnza when they were like 0-10 and couldn’t score a point I looked it up. You coached with that dude that use to wear the Suits on the sideline. Anyways good job on your championship.

Since you’re answering my comment are you saying that you would have beaten EC, MC, & Campo if you had stayed DIII?

  • Prince Smalls

Mute point, MC and Campo have no banners to hang this year. Where do you coach at or root for? Or do you just like to comment on high school sports?

  • Perkin

Just a fan. I didn’t know you had to be a coach to comment on this site. Whats mute about my question? Would you have beaten those schools had you stayed DIII? It was an issue since you petitioned up? Or were you not in on that decision? I would think you would be since your the D coordinator.

  • Pez

Perkin, you just don’t quit! After running through Northgate, Clayton Valley and Casa Grande you think Miramonte has something to answer for? Miramonte beat a great Casa Grande team in one of the best football games I’ve ever seen. Frankly, I think they were better than Campo or Marin Catholic, and maybe better than El Cerrito. MIramonte has nothing to explain. I think people like you miss the point that through the playoffs certain teams just got better and better. El Cerrito is one of those teams and so is Miramonte. Based on the games down the stretch, I don’t have any doubt Miramonte was playing better than Campo or Marin Catholic by the finals. Would they have beaten El Cerrito? I don’t know, but I agree with Prince Smalls that the question is mute! Miramonte is a great championship team, one of the best Miramonte has ever had and anything else is just sour grapes!

  • Perkin

I believe the word your looking for is moot by the way. I have never heard of a mute point. Sorry you didn’t make the regionals. You seem to have a much better gig as DC at Miramonte.

  • EB Prep Fan

Miramonte had a great run and a great championship. They earned it and I’m happy for Coach Schram.
Lets be real though. If Miramonte thought they could hang with Campo, EC and Marin Catholic they would have stayed in D3.
Like we said, if you didn’t try to spin it to sound good everybody would be fine. So it’s great to celebrate and enjoy, but to sit and say what you coulda done after the fact is a bit “insecure”.
Whatever…..great season and I hope the QB starts getting some College looks because he’s better than a bunch of QBs that have already committed. Stud!

  • Sarparto

Who was better than Campo, MC, and maybe El Cerrito? Miramonte or Casa Grande? Mira lost by 31 to MC and 28 against Campo.

  • Pez

Like I said, some teams got better and some teams faded…

  • Pez

EB, I’ve never answered your question because I don’t think its fair to ask me what the coaching staff was thinking when they decided to move up. I don’t know exactly why. Maybe they preferred the color of the uniforms of the teams in D2 over D3. Like you, I assume they saw some advantage in moving up and playing the slate of teams in D2 versus D3. But knowing Coach Schram, I very much doubt fear was involved.
I can say for my part I didn’t think moving up to play bigger, run-oriented teams was a very good idea. I honestly thought they would grind our smaller team to dust over the course of the game. And in fact, nothing felt easy about beating Northgate, Clayton Valley or Casa Gande. The pressure on the offense to score and the pressure on the defense to get stops was every bit as intense as anything we faced against the D3 teams.
But in the end, the key word is “mute”. Could we beat Team X. I don’t know, its a mute point. The D2 banner hangs from our rafters and seeing Miramonte bring it home feels as satisfying as I hoped it would.

  • Sarparto

Congrats on the section win, but Mira chose D2 because it was easier.

  • EB Prep Fan

Fair enough. Well said. I don’t think “fear” would be the right word for sure. It’s not really in Coach Schram’s nature.

I agreed with you. I thought bigger teams would roll over your smaller team. Obviously, I was wrong, and your team and coaching staff deserves credit and the banner!

  • EB Prep Fan

Just curious…….how much did it hurt Campo when their WR got hurt? Was it a big factor in NCS? Or would it have mattered against EC?

  • EB Prep Fan

Prince Smalls…..congrats on the banner…..but I’m just wondering if you would have bothered to reply to a MONTH OLD blog if you would have lost Saturday? Seems kinda weak when you respond to a post A MONTH LATER after winning……
