Boys Soccer: WSC & TVC Favorites, Rankings, Standings, Stats

The Winter Soccer Classic and Tri-Valley Classic start this week. Who are the favorites to win these prestigious early season tournaments?

WSC Gold
Last year, it was a Foothill v. Deer Valley final, and it would be a mistake to to count either of those two teams out this year. And the fact that both Cal and Newark lost some key players from last season, makes this division wide open. Logan also is in the mix, after proving they’ll be tough by drawing with MV last week.
However, I’m going strictly with my gut and I’m taking Newark Memorial to win the WSC Gold this year.

WSC Silver

Campolindo, Acalanes and Bishop O’Dowd are all in the same tourney bracket here. This will make for some incredible early season soccer. With Campo being ranked so high, it would be easy to say they are the clear favorite. But it’s early and anything can happen. I’m going to stick with Campo as the favorite, but it will be really close.

WSC Bronze

Before the season, I probably would have taken Alhambra, but now I’m leaning towards a couple of MVAL schools. I think MSJ and Washington are going to be the toughest in this division, and in the end, I think MSJ is the favorite. That’s who I am going with.

TVC

This tournament is loaded, once again. I think SRV, MV, AV, CP, Pittsburg and Berkeley are all serious contenders. I think Dougherty Valley and Liberty are also going to make a strong showing.
There isn’t much to go off of, except for the early season rankings, but I’ll do it this way. The favorite is Monte Vista, as defending champs. SRV would be a 1(b) as far as favorites are concerned. AV is the wild card because people seem very high on them this year, and Pitt is the wild card because that team is very talented.

Rankings

Small changes once again, as Dublin gets into the top 15 after its torrid start. Richmond and Cal make small jumps over Hayward and Berkeley, who drew their first matches of the year.
Livermore and Antioch both debut on the consideration list.

  • Strykerboy

Matt, who are the early season surprises?

  • ConradNolan

To be honest, last two years had the talent and no coaching. This year have the coaching but limited talent. A school of over 3200 students and only a couple of subs is pathetic.

  • ConradNolan

My bad Strykerboy, living in the past…Chicago Cubs fan syndrome.

  • Offsides

    What about Dublin? 7-0?

  • Matt Smith

Dublin is a huge surprise, and I have to say Granada and Livermore are nice surprises. I think Albany is also a surprise to me so far.
On the other side of the token, Acalanes is a surprise, but I bet the Dons turn it around before too long.

  • Matt Smith

Dublin 3, Moreau 2 – In a sloppy, muddy game.

  • Strykerboy

Let me guess…a Moreau home game? They put 2 past Dublin. First two they have conceded all year. Maybe they are human?

  • Matt Smith

    They were both on PK’s.

  • Swerve

    Piedmont 6 Kennedy 0 Final

  • Highlander

    Piedmont 6 – 0 Kennedy Final Score

  • Matt Smith

WSC finals today, all at Castro Valley High.

    Bronze- Albany v. Alhambra, 3:00
    Silver- Campo v. BOD, 5:00
    Gold- Cal v. FH, 7:00

  • Kyle

Rivalry of the week next week! Dublin vs Dougherty Valley @Dublin predictions?

  • Drew

Matt, what is up with this Dublin team?

  • EBAL Dad

The TVC match to be at today is
#6 Amador vs #7 Pitt (which just beat #3 SRV) 1pm at Monte Vista
to be followed by Liberty vs Monte Vista at 3

  • Strykerboy

AVHS beat Dougherty pretty handily (4-0), so I would go with Dublin. Although you can never count the Valley teams out.

  • Strykerboy

That 7:00 match is gonna be COLD!

  • Matt Smith

@08a572feeacb46fc835c5dcb80e6cd9f:disqus They returned a lot of players, so they are experienced. They also play lock down defense, and have not given up a goal in the run of play. This smacks of the Dublin team that won the title a few years ago.

  • Matt Smith

It looks like Antioch, Tennyson and San Leandro didn’t make it to their WSC games today, and lost by forfeit.

  • Matt Smith

    Pitt up 1-0 early.

  • Matt Smith

1-1, 15 to go with Pitt and AV.

  • Matt Smith

    At the TVC…

    Pitt 1, AV 1

Finals from the WSC’s last day…

    Logan beats DV 3-1
    Castro Valley 0, Heritage 0
    Acalanes beats Antioch by forfeit
    MSJ beats Tennyson by forfeit
Palo Alto beats San Leandro by forfeit

  • Matt Smith

Kick off for the bronze final in seconds…

By the way, if anyone is coming to Castro Valley, I’m in the pressbox. I could use a hot chocolate or a hot tea.

    Also, where is the Sweeper?

  • Matt Smith

Ken Villegas wins the race to bring me a hot chocolate.

  • Strykerboy

Pitt v Amador was a very good match. Pitt probably deserved a better result but the Don’s had a couple of chances to end with a win late too. Hard fought battle (not dirty). I am sure both coaches are pleased with their teams effort. Two completely different styles of football, each playing to their strength respective strengths. .

  • Strykerboy

What’s up with that? Seems a bit weak.

  • Matt Smith

MV up on Liberty 1-0 at the TVC.

  • Matt Smith

Alhambra 0-0 Albany at the half.

  • Matt Smith

Alhambra strikes first on a Jesus Maldonado free kick, but Albany gets an equalizer just five minutes later on a nifty goal by Quinn Brashares.

  • Matt Smith

    MV up 2-0.

  • Matt Smith

Antioch was due to an understandable mistake.

  • Matt Smith

The Bronze Division will be decided by PK’s.

  • Matt Smith

    MV up on Liberty 3-0.

  • Matt Smith

    SRV beats Dougherty 3-1
    Monte Vista 3-0 Liberty

Campo up 1-0 on BOD at the WSC.

  • Matt Smith

Campo up 2-0 on BOD at half.

    Campo looks really good.

  • Matt Smith

BOD on the board. Saccomono with his 5th goal of the year.

  • Matt Smith

Berkley 2-2 CP in other TVC action.

  • Matt Smith

    Camp wins 2-1.

  • Matt Smith

Foothill up 3-0 on Cal at halftime.

  • Matt Smith

    Northgate 2, North Salinas 0

  • Matt Smith

    Hayward at the Redding Tournament…

    Hayward 13-0 Lassen
    Hayward 2-0 Shasta
    Hayward 2-0 Willows
    Hayward 2-1 Shasta

  • Matt Smith

FH wins 3-1. Back to back WSC titles.

  • foothill fan

Time to rank those Foothill Falcons in the top 15!

  • Highlander

I heard Cal were missing some players. Is that true?

  • Offsides

Who saw this game that can comment? How was it?

  • Offsides

    Yes, where is the Sweeper?

  • ConradNolan

Shasta times had Shasta HS 2 Hayward 0 played in the snow. brrrrrr

  • Matt Smith

Hayward actually won it, but it was snowing.

  • EBAL Dad

I don’t understand going all the way to Redding to play inferior, out of section teams that don’t do much for your teams credentials. Wins ?, yes they added 4 to that so now their record, in my opinion, is in question. If it was a December SoCal Tournament it seems to me it would be more meaningful. Play local so we will KNOW how you match up. And, that’s games, not scrimmages.

  • Strykerboy

I guess I would have to agree here since Hayward entered the results in Maxpreps and the fact they had a 12-0 result against Lassen. I can see using an event like this to get ready for the upcoming season, but not to run your early stats up. Still have to see where they shake out. I think they are most likely a very good side. They have BOD coming up. That’s a better measurement.

  • Strykerboy

Doesn’t matter even if they ewere. All teams are going to have to deal with injuries and missing players through the season. AVHS played short against Pitt. A result is a result and Foothill should be proud of their back to back championships.
