Boys Soccer: League Favorites, The Blog, Rankings, Standings, Stats

Believe it or not, league play starts this upcoming week. Let’s look at each league, and pick a favorite, a challenger and a dark horse contender.

BVAL

The favorite is Pittsburg. The Pirates appear to be one of the top teams in the East Bay, let alone the BVAL. Would have to say Pitt is a heavy favorite. However, this league is always contentious, and Freedom should be expected to be the challenger. The dark horse is going to be two-part as I think both Deer Valley and Antioch could make some noise.

DFAL

Campolindo is the favorite, but is it by a lot? The Cougars looked very good on Saturday, but Dublin seems to be a serious challenger in this league. Another two-part dark horse as Alhambra looks dangerous, but also Miramonte seems to be playing good soccer.

DVAL

I don’t really see a dark horse in this league. A dark horse is someone that surprises. What I see is YV being the favorite once again, but with College Park, Concord and Northgate all as serious contenders.

EBAL

The favorite is De La Salle, until proven otherwise. However, there are several contenders as Amador Valley, Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley all look strong, and California is a perennial contender. Foothill isn’t much of a dark horse, but they are the closest thing to that this league has. Foothill could be a surprise contender for a top two spot in this league.

MVAL

Newark Memorial is the favorite in this league once again, and Logan is a very close contender for the league crown. We’re used to those two teams battling it out for the league title. So who is the dark horse? I’m hearing good things about Washington and Irvington, and I expect Kennedy to play tough as well as MSJ, who’s played better recently.

OAL

Oakland Tech is the favorite here, while Skyline is the challenger. I don’t know enough about this league at this point to pick a dark horse.

TCAL Rock

Richmond should be considered the favorite, but I won’t make the mistake of calling them a heavy favorite. That’s because I expect St. Mary’s to challenge, and I think Albany is better than most expected. That team will give Richmond and St. Mary’s a run.

TCAL Stone

This league should be a battle all year. I think at this point that Pinole Valley is a slight favorite, with De Anza as the top challenger.

WACC Foothill

Berkeley is the favorite, but not by much as I think Bishop O’Dowd will challenge for the league title. The dark horse is Castro Valley. By the middle of December, nobody will want to play the Trojans. The new coaches are still getting everyone on the same page and in the right spot, but it will happen sooner rather than later.

WACC Shoreline

Hayward is the favorite to win the league once again. I think that San Lorenzo is going to challenge, and watch for Piedmont to be the surprise team here.

The Blog’s Final Season

For those of you that don’t know, I finished law school and passed the California Bar Exam. What this means is that this is the swan song for me here on the blog. Whether I do my own site in my own time remains to be seen, but this is my farewell season. I have a new job, but decided to stay on for one more season because I couldn’t quite let it go yet.
So let’s make this a great season with a lot of activity on the blog, and blow last season out of the water.

Rankings

More games have been played. More shifts have been made.
Amador Valley and Pittsburg jump up after impressive performances at the TVC, while Monte Vista stays right with those two teams to round out the top five.
Newark Memorial makes a well-deserved jump into the top 10, as does Foothill, while Dublin climbs another spot.
Albany, Northgate, Granada and Alhambra all climb into the consideration list.

  • Taha

Why are you surprised that DLS scored first??

  • eL Pata

200 comments in the early season. Break 500 next week peoples. Send matt out right.

  • Matt Smith

    @eL Pata:disqus Yes! Thank you!

  • Matt Smith

Not surprised that DLS scored first. I am surprised the DLS scored first and settled for a draw. Usually when DLS scores first, it’s game over.

  • Taha

With this result what are your thoughts of Logan and De La Salle as they progress in the season?

  • Matt Smith

I think Logan is probably pretty legit. I’m not reading too much into it as it is the first match for DLS.

  • Ryan

I think AV and DLS are probably the top two right now. What do you think?

  • eL Pata

    Anytime. ;)

  • Marty Sparty

You don’t need a private coach, special camp or lots of money to be well conditioned.

  • TheTalk6

There best player in the middle got hurt and with out him they can not produce. It’s hard when the forwards can’t get the ball.

  • Offsides

Sounds like the defenders couldn’t get the ball either? I guess YV wasn’t in the Shasta tournament? Glad to see what happens when they play local teams like BOD & YV.

  • Offsides

Woulda, coulda, shoulda, horse shoes, & hand grenades… You played this trumpet last year. The song is old. “Is what it is” is the only thing I agree with.

  • Offsides

Wow. MLS is professional soccer last I checked. When did HS pass college & pros? Better tell the World Cup that HS is coming after them!
    Rubbish.

  • Offsides

The “former coach” is what you got out of his comments? Did you miss the fact that he did not mention that at all, and his question was about style of play? Please tell me about the style of play question if you want to stay on topic!

  • Casual Observer

Read again offsides. “Was this due to a coaching change at AVHS” obviously you did not read what was said. Stay on topic and don’t bring in a Coach who hasn’t’ been there for two years into the topic.

  • mudhen

I agree Matt. Usually if DLS gets on top of you, they stay there. Perhaps that’s the lesson for teams who play EBAL schools.

  • mudhen

Ok pal, this is for you and Offside(s). I ref the San Fransisco men, club, and college and I see more soccer in a year than the both of you put together do in 5. You are fans of EBAL, and that’s great. We get it. Those schools DO excel and they DO have an advantage and it’s called MONEY. Only a fool could disagree with the concept that having year ’round club, private coaching, camps and the assurance that you are not running the risk of being killed when you go out on Friday night does not give one an edge. In a way, I feel sorry for boys and girls who never lose. They never feel the bitter that reflects the sweet, and can never understand just how great it must be for the kids on the other side of the tracks to taste sucsess. But I seriously doubt that you understand this and I will no longer cast my pearls among , well, you get the idea. I hope…

  • mudhen

Ok, this is for you and Offside(s). I ref the San Francisco men, club, and college and I see more soccer in a year than the both of you do in 5. You guys are EBAL fans and that’s great! We get it. But your constant denigration of teams who do not rate in your book is wearisome. They DO have an advantage and it is called MONEY. Only a fool would discount the benefit that year ’round club, private coaching, and the assurance that you are not going to run the risk of being shot and killed just for being outside on a Friday night. And I am not dissing them for it. It’s GREAT that at least SOMEBODY gets that privilege. But in a way, I feel sorry for the boys and girls who never lose when they are young. They miss the sweetness that the kids from the OTHER side of the tracks experience when they overcome a rival with superior firepower, although I am not sure that you understand what I am saying here. So ROCK ON dudes. Sleep easy in the knowledge that your team is BETTER than the others.

  • Bob

Mudhen, thanks for your post. A little bit of perspective on things beyond soccer (but that impact soccer) is very healthy. Love you, man.

  • Offsides

And you avoided the topic again.

  • Offsides

Wow. Your resume is not in question here. If you knew me, you wouldn’t have made your exaggerated claim. (“seen more than we do in 5 years”) I am not impressed with your pearls. “Me thinks thou protests too loudly”, but thanks for inferring that we are swine! Cuz now I know you are more interested in socio-economics, bragging, & name calling, rather than soccer commentary.
And for you and Mudhen… I grew up in Hayward. Played there. And came through all the issues/excuses you guys make. You are exemplifying all the snobbery you accuse us of. So I’m not sure you “know what you’re talking about” when you pair me with the EBAL.
(And by the way, the EBAL knows about losing. They have to play each other 14 times a year.)
So you my friend… are “Offsides”!
