Boys Soccer: League Favorites, The Blog, Rankings, Standings, Stats

Believe it or not, league play starts this upcoming week. Let’s look at each league, and pick a favorite, a challenger and a dark horse contender.

BVAL

The favorite is Pittsburg. The Pirates appear to be one of the top teams in the East Bay, let alone the BVAL. Would have to say Pitt is a heavy favorite. However, this league is always contentious, and Freedom should be expected to be the challenger. The dark horse is going to be two-part as I think both Deer Valley and Antioch could make some noise.

DFAL

Campolindo is the favorite, but is it by a lot? The Cougars looked very good on Saturday, but Dublin seems to be a serious challenger in this league. Another two-part dark horse as Alhambra looks dangerous, but also Miramonte seems to be playing good soccer.

DVAL

I don’t really see a dark horse in this league. A dark horse is someone that surprises. What I see is YV being the favorite once again, but with College Park, Concord and Northgate all as serious contenders.

EBAL

The favorite is De La Salle, until proven otherwise. However, there are several contenders as Amador Valley, Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley all look strong, and California is a perennial contender. Foothill isn’t much of a dark horse, but they are the closest thing to that this league has. Foothill could be a surprise contender for a top two spot in this league.

MVAL

Newark Memorial is the favorite in this league once again, and Logan is a very close contender for the league crown. We’re used to those two teams battling it out for the league title. So who is the dark horse? I’m hearing good things about Washington and Irvington, and I expect Kennedy to play tough as well as MSJ, who’s played better recently.

OAL

Oakland Tech is the favorite here, while Skyline is the challenger. I don’t know enough about this league at this point to pick a dark horse.

TCAL Rock

Richmond should be considered the favorite, but I won’t make the mistake of calling them a heavy favorite. That’s because I expect St. Mary’s to challenge, and I think Albany is better than most expected. That team will give Richmond and St. Mary’s a run.

TCAL Stone

This league should be a battle all year. I think at this point that Pinole Valley is a slight favorite, with De Anza as the top challenger.

WACC Foothill

Berkeley is the favorite, but not by much as I think Bishop O’Dowd will challenge for the league title. The dark horse is Castro Valley. By the middle of December, nobody will want to play the Trojans. The new coaches are still getting everyone on the same page and in the right spot, but it will happen sooner rather than later.

WACC Shoreline

Hayward is the favorite to win the league once again. I think that San Lorenzo is going to challenge, and watch for Piedmont to be the surprise team here.

The Blog’s Final Season

For those of you that don’t know, I finished law school and passed the California Bar Exam. What this means is that this is the swan song for me here on the blog. Whether I do my own site in my own time remains to be seen, but this is my farewell season. I have a new job, but decided to stay on for one more season because I couldn’t quite let it go yet.
So let’s make this a great season with a lot of activity on the blog, and blow last season out of the water.

Rankings

More games have been played. More shifts have been made.
Amador Valley and Pittsburg jump up after impressive performances at the TVC, while Monte Vista stays right with those two teams to round out the top five.
Newark Memorial makes a well-deserved jump into the top 10, as does Foothill, while Dublin climbs another spot.

    AV strikes again. 2-0.

  • scoreboard

Must be easy to win titles when you have that long throw in!

  • Matt Smith

Racer PK. 3-0 AV. They’ve got their margin. They need to maintain the shutout.

  • scoreboard

Thanks for all u do Matt. Enjoy the swan song…100

  • foothill fan

    Foothill-3, Alameda-0, halftime

  • LL Dad

Speaking of long throws, Campo scores a significant percentage of their goals on direct throw in’s/crashing net and keeper from Simmons. 3 of 4 goals vs LL on direct throws in a 4-1 game. With all these narrow football fields in high school it is easy. Would be a completely different story on a real size pitch during Club season.

Berean keeper had a great game! Under fire through out and made numerous circus saves. A nice talent.

  • Matt Smith

AV eliminated from contention. CP scored, and Dons needed the shutout.

  • Matt Smith

    3-1.

  • foothill fan

    Final, Foothill-4, Alameda-3

  • Matt Smith

    AV wins 4-1.

SRV and Liberty tied 1-1 just before half.

  • footiefan

great game. Alameda had a great second half response. Unfortunately they dug themselves in too big of a hole. They came out really sluggish and lackadaisical which they paid for giving up 3 goals in the first half. Second half they came out like the Alameda that I have seen in previous games. Foothill scored another against the run of play in the second half. They scored 3 unanswered goals to make it 4-3. Alameda showed some pretty soccer. Hopefully they take this as a learning experience. You can’t waste a whole half against a quality team like Foothill.

  • Strykerboy

Thanks Matt….Yeah, late goal conceded by AV was a tough one, but still would have been in a tough spot even with the shutout. They go 3-0-1 for TVC and still undefeated on the season. Still a very strong start…lot’s of season left though.

  • Strykerboy

    LOL!

  • Matt Smith

    YV 5, Hayward 0

  • Matt Smith

    SRV beats Liberty 3-2.

  • Matt Smith

MV up on Berkeley 1-0, 15:00 in. Berkeley needs a win to win the TVC, while MV needs only a draw.

  • Strykerboy

Telling result. What happens when Hayward plays a league contender. Still, I wouldn’t want to play Hayward next.

  • Strykerboy

    Ouch again

  • Matt Smith

    MV up 3-0.

  • mudhen

Drank the kool aid, eh? Cheap shot dude. You ignored the reference to superior conditioning etc. So typical.

  • mudhen

That’s a ridiculous score . Completely without class or dignity.

  • mudhen

They lost their best player to injury. Jesus guy, go get EBAL tatoo’ed on your forehead so the world can know what you think

  • mudhen

Dude, go get EBAL tattood’ed on your forehead so the world can know what you think. Hayward lost their best mid fielder to injury this week.

  • Strykerboy

    LOL

  • Strykerboy

Didn’t Hayward have a 15-0 result against Lassen?

  • Strykerboy

    Unlucky, but a result is a result…

  • Matt Smith

    Monte Vista wins TVC.

  • Strykerboy

    San Ramon

  • mudhen

    Bordering on racist, here.

  • mudhen

Their Women’s team is no slouch either!

  • Strykerboy

    ??? Huh

  • Strykerboy

Congratulations….they also hosted a fun tournament!

  • mudhen

Well, De La Salle did it to Richmond and their field is 70 yards wide,so you gotta give some credit there.

  • mudhen

    Or MLS…..

  • mudhen

    OOOH, hurtsies!

  • mudhen

    Same difference.

Any thoughts on the MV vs Berkeley game? I heard the score was a little misleading.

  • Strykerboy

    Envy?

  • Strykerboy

Fun this week Matt. Thanks for a great job! Were gonna miss you. Looking forward to Sunday’s new posting!

  • Strykerboy

Was the 15- 0 result “Completely without class or dignity?” Just asking…

  • EBAL Dad

    yes

  • Casual Observer

Really Strykerboy! Show some class and keep the former coach out of your comment. You really don’t know what you are talking about. Stay on topic and keep the rubbish out of this blog. Your personal comments regarding the former coach are not needed. Stay focused on this years program

  • EBALFan

DLS v Logan ended on a 1-1 draw.

  • DieHardAvs

Whoa! What a great week of soccer!

  • MikeT

Congratulations to Monte Vista for winning and hosting a very splendid tourney!

  • Matt Smith

I think that Monte Vista played fantastic. Berkeley did not play poorly, but will likely leave knowing they need to work on things once getting inside the attacking 1/3. MV just played great, and that is no knock on Berkeley.

  • Matt Smith

    MSJ 2, Livermore 1
    DLS 1, Logan 1

What surprises me most about the DLS/Logan score is that DLS scored first.

  • Matt Smith

@disqus_Kcx2DoZZgX:disqus In Pitt’s defense, the head coach was not there for this game, and I think the scores came so quickly that Pitt didn’t even have time to think about how to keep from running up the score. In defense of Pitt, they are a classy program with no ill-intent. I know they are sorry this got out of hand.
