Ex-Chabot College DL Jaryl Mamea is poised to start for Central Florida against high-powered Baylor in Wednesday’s Tostidos Fiesta Bowl.
“He’s excited about it, fired up,” Chabot coach Danny Calcagno said of Mamea (6-1, 269). “He’s had a good year and ended up starting.”
Calcagno says he’s been exchanging texts with Mamea, whose younger brother Jalen played for Chabot last season before suffering a knee injury in week three. Jaryl Mamea, a redshirt junior, has bulked up since his days as a speed rusher on the edge at Chabot in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
As a sophomore at Chabot, he had 34 tackles, including nine tackles for a loss and four sacks. He was named to the first-team all-Golden Gate Conference squad and the all-region team.
