De La Salle’s Blair Hurlock 8th at national championships

De La Salle High’s Blair Hurlock was the top California finisher in the Foot Locker boys national cross country championship race with an eighth-place finish today in San Diego.
“It feels awesome,” said Hurlock in a phone interview. “I finished in the top 10, which was my goal.”
Hurlock’s time was 15 minutes, 24 seconds for the 3.1 mile course at Balboa Park. The West region dominated the race, as it placed six runnners in the top eight. But it was a Midwest runnner, Grant Fisher of Grand Blanc, MI., who won the race in 15:07.
De La Salle coach John Pelster said in a phone interview that Hurlock was in the front half of the race in the first mile, runnning a controlled pace.
“That was definitely the strategy, not to overdo it the first mile,” Pelster said.
Hurlock surged near the two-mile mark and took the lead.
“Definitely I was feeling pretty good, and I decided to go for it,” Hurlock said.
He led until a long hill in the last mile of the race.
