Boys Soccer: Big Games, Rankings, Standings, Stats

Let’s take a look at the games that could have the biggest effect in the league races.

The BVAL does not get started this week, but Freedom has a big game against Granada, Deer Valley has a big one against SRV (both Saturday) while Pitt has three games during the week.

A pair of Friday games have the biggest effect in this league as Dublin hosts Campolindo and Las Lomas hosts Alhambra. Dublin needs to come away with points to stay in the chase, while Campolindo can really put distance between itself and the rest of the pack. Alhambra, only three points out, needs a win to prove it will be in this race long term.

If there is a loser between CP/Ngate on Tuesday, that team will have a very hard time catching YV so it may be must-win time there. YV then plays Mount Diablo on Thursday. Is Mount gonna hang around? Both in the league race and in the playoff hunt? This is its chance to show it will.

Every game seems huge in this league, but to pick a couple, I have to think that a loser in the SRV/Cal game on Tuesday is going to have a long road ahead. The biggest game of the week, and of the year in the East Bay, is on Thursday, when MV hosts DLS. We’re gonna get a lot of answers after that result. Or will we get more questions? I guess anything is possible.

It’s obviously big when Logan and Newark play, and they play on Wednesday. This will go a long way in determining the league frontrunner. But I think the MSJ v. Kennedy game on Friday is also important. A win will go a long way for playoff purposes, and for staying in the top 2-3 and within striking distance of the league crown.

A pair of Thursday games are huge here. Salesian faces Richmond. Can Salesian keep its place at the top of the table? Are they for real? Albany and El Cerrito also face off and we will see who is the most serious playoff contender, and who could hang around near the top of the table.

Hayward and Castro Valley play Wednesday and that is big for two teams in different sides of the league. Castro Valley needs to get back on track, and needs a win to stay close to Berkeley and Bishop O’Dowd. Hayward also has San Leandro and San Lorenzo nipping at its heels, so a win is important for them. On Friday, Berkeley and O’Dowd face off. It’s the biggest game in this league to date, and we’re gonna find out if Berkeley will be challenged for the title.

Believe it or not, even with just a handful of games, this week was the hardest on me as far as doing the rankings. The challenge came at the bottom of the rankings and on with teams on the list at 16-25, but some changes needed to be made.
Hayward, by virtue of patience, jumps back into the top 10, thanks to losses by San Ramon Valley, Logan, a draw by Dublin and idleness from Foothill.
SRV drops eight, while Logan drops nine, below a pair of teams they have lost two this year.
A couple wins has Cal back in the top 15, while St. Mary’s moves back in as well, while Alhambra is just one spot away from debuting in the top 15.
The changes in the consideration list have Granada making a strong push as this is the time to show they belong, while Pinole Valley is back, El Cerrito gets a look after four straight wins and San Lorenzo is back.
The tough decision was moving Northgate all the way out for the one loss, and moving idle Arroyo and CP out. But I had to make room for teams who made statements recently.
All these teams will get a chance to earn their way back in this week. I’m also interested in giving Hercules, De Anza and Livermore looks to get back in.

havent seen Camp this season! How are they?

  • Matt Smith

They’re very good. Big, fast and strong.

  • Donnyparker

What are your thoughts on MV this season?

  • Donnyparker

What are your thoughts on MV this season?

  • Matt Smith

I’m incredibly impressed. They are a very creative team with dangerous players who work well together. They aren’t the biggest team, but the back line is very strong and play bigger than they are.

  • Matt Smith

Looks like De Anza did not show up to Pittsburg today, and Pitt will get the forfeit win.

  • Highlander

    Final 6-1

  • MikeT

My bet is that DLS makes the drop based on their record. The FH vs. Richmond result, shows again how tough EBAL is.
AV vs. MV on Tuesday. That will say some about next weeks rankings.
The parity it the HS sides is very cool this season.

    2. Pittsburg
    3. YV
    4. Berkeley
    5. Newark

Mt has an ok squad at the moment. Issue has always been “do they have grades?” Lot of dfc and heritage players

  • mudhen

Campo flat out dominated Pinole tonight. Pinole had a couple of chances, but in the end Campo showed their strength. And the ref? Ehhhh…..

  • mudhen

AND…. As far as I can tell, O’Dowd looks poised to peak at the right time. Beware o ye of little faith.

  • Jim08

Flat out dominated? Pinole is a team that is not scared to play anybody. They gave campo a battle today which campo did not expect

  • MikeT

Always with the Ref. Sorry, the MLS Refs are probably busy.

  • MikeT

    Thanks Jim

  • MikeT

    Have a beer?

  • mudhen

Campo had at least 75% possession and anything in the air, Campo owned. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a Campo partisan, but Pinole did not have what it takes to win.

  • mudhen

I AM a ref. That guy missed at least 3 solid cards on Campo.

  • Jim08

For not have what it takes they came pretty close to an upset. If it wasn’t for a couple of centimeters Pinole would have scored the first goal of the match.

  • MikeT

    Too bad.

  • MikeT

My point is that at this level you have to expect some blown calls and poor officiating, can’t really cry about it game after game. These guys are doing their best, just like the boys. Overall the games I have seen calls have evened out.

  • mudhen

    Fair enough..,.

  • mudhen

Yes they did give Campo a battle, but they were unable to put together more than a couple of coherent attacks. Pinole made too many passes into open space without looking first, and Campo picked almost all of them off. Likewise, Campo had a height advantage and used it well. Their midfielders got anything that came their way. I look to see Campo make another deep run into NCS this year. And Shane Carny (Campo coach) is a very savvy young man who learns from his mistakes. The Hayward /Campolindo game coming up at Hayward will be a VERY interesting test for them, what with that minefield that Hayward plays on. If Hayward actually shows up to play, lookout!

  • Jerry03

Dublin high looked stronger than campo this week
