Boys Soccer: Big Games, Rankings, Standings, Stats

Let’s take a look at the games that could have the biggest effect in the league races.

BVAL

The BVAL does not get started this week, but Freedom has a big game against Granada, Deer Valley has a big one against SRV (both Saturday) while Pitt has three games during the week.

DFAL

A pair of Friday games have the biggest effect in this league as Dublin hosts Campolindo and Las Lomas hosts Alhambra. Dublin needs to come away with points to stay in the chase, while Campolindo can really put distance between itself and the rest of the pack. Alhambra, only three points out, needs a win to prove it will be in this race long term.

DVAL

If there is a loser between CP/Ngate on Tuesday, that team will have a very hard time catching YV so it may be must-win time there. YV then plays Mount Diablo on Thursday. Is Mount gonna hang around? Both in the league race and in the playoff hunt? This is its chance to show it will.

EBAL

Every game seems huge in this league, but to pick a couple, I have to think that a loser in the SRV/Cal game on Tuesday is going to have a long road ahead. The biggest game of the week, and of the year in the East Bay, is on Thursday, when MV hosts DLS. We’re gonna get a lot of answers after that result. Or will we get more questions? I guess anything is possible.

MVAL

It’s obviously big when Logan and Newark play, and they play on Wednesday. This will go a long way in determining the league frontrunner. But I think the MSJ v. Kennedy game on Friday is also important. A win will go a long way for playoff purposes, and for staying in the top 2-3 and within striking distance of the league crown.

TCAL

A pair of Thursday games are huge here. Salesian faces Richmond. Can Salesian keep its place at the top of the table? Are they for real? Albany and El Cerrito also face off and we will see who is the most serious playoff contender, and who could hang around near the top of the table.

WACC

Hayward and Castro Valley play Wednesday and that is big for two teams in different sides of the league. Castro Valley needs to get back on track, and needs a win to stay close to Berkeley and Bishop O’Dowd. Hayward also has San Leandro and San Lorenzo nipping at its heels, so a win is important for them. On Friday, Berkeley and O’Dowd face off. It’s the biggest game in this league to date, and we’re gonna find out if Berkeley will be challenged for the title.

Rankings

Believe it or not, even with just a handful of games, this week was the hardest on me as far as doing the rankings. The challenge came at the bottom of the rankings and on with teams on the list at 16-25, but some changes needed to be made.
Hayward, by virtue of patience, jumps back into the top 10, thanks to losses by San Ramon Valley, Logan, a draw by Dublin and idleness from Foothill.
SRV drops eight, while Logan drops nine, below a pair of teams they have lost two this year.
A couple wins has Cal back in the top 15, while St. Mary’s moves back in as well, while Alhambra is just one spot away from debuting in the top 15.
The changes in the consideration list have Granada making a strong push as this is the time to show they belong, while Pinole Valley is back, El Cerrito gets a look after four straight wins and San Lorenzo is back.
The tough decision was moving Northgate all the way out for the one loss, and moving idle Arroyo and CP out. But I had to make room for teams who made statements recently.
All these teams will get a chance to earn their way back in this week. I’m also interested in giving Hercules, De Anza and Livermore looks to get back in.
