Ohlone hires new men’s basketball coach

Scott Fisher has been hired as the new head men’s basketball coach of Ohlone College, the school announced Thursday in a press release.

Fisher was an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii the past four seasons. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the Perth Wildcats, an Australian professional team, for four seasons. Fisher is a Mission San Jose High graduate.

At Ohlone, he replaces longtime coach John Peterson, who was hired as an assistant coach at Loyola Marymount

Fisher won a pair of league Most Valuable Player awards and three league titles in a long career in Australia’s National Basketball League. In 2007, he was inducted into the NBL Hall of Fame. He also played at UC Santa Barbara and is a member of its Athletic Hall of Fame.

Boys Soccer: Zahner, Faidley step down; Kendall in at MV

A pair of East Bay coaching fixtures have decided to step away, subsequently, both of them hale from the East Bay Athletic League.
Monte Vista’s Matt Zahner is resigning as head coach after nine seasons at the helm of the Mustangs, while California’s Chris Faidley is leaving his post after seven seasons with the Grizzlies.

NCS baseball: Upsets aplenty as tournament begins

What a crazy stat to the North Coast Section baseball playoffs. We got an 18-inning thriller that lasted two days, saw the defending champions in Division I and II eliminated in the first round and had the No. 16 seed beat the No. 1 in two brackets. This is the kind of excitement we get with single-elimination tournaments on the diamond.

De La Salle’s Kahlil McKenzie lists his top 12

De La Salle lineman Kahlil McKenzie, flooded with offers from some of the country’s most successful football programs, announced his list of top 12 schools on Wednesday. The 6-foot-4, 309-pound defensive tackle posted his top choices to his Twitter account. In order, McKenzie’s favorites at the moment are Tennessee, Arizona, USC, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, UCLA, Miami, Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, Oregon and Texas Tech.

The prized recruit is the son of Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie. Kahlil made a major impact in his first season with De La Salle last fall after moving to the East Bay from Wisconsin. He registered a team-high 12 sacks and was third with 74 tackles — including 18 tackles for a loss.

Frank Borghi issues statement about San Ramon Valley boys basketball coaching position

Earlier this month, Frank Borghi was offered the job as San Ramon Valley High’s varsity boys basketball coach by members of the school’s administration. After students and parents expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to hire Borghi and not junior varsity coach Brian Botteen, a meeting was held May 13 at the school, giving students and parents a chance to talk to the administration and San Ramon Valley Unified School District representatives directly about the decision to hire Borghi.
Before the meeting, Bay Area News Group tried to reach Borghi for comment. Borghi, who withdrew his name from consideration last Thursday, got back in touch with this newspaper Sunday evening. After some discussion today, he agreed to issue a statement on the matter. Here is his statement.

Carondelet to begin girls basketball coaching interviews next week

Carondelet will start interviewing candidates for its open girls basketball coaching position next week, according to Carondelet athletic director Gleam Green. The interviews will be done by a four-person panel.
Margaret Gartner stepped down as Carondelet’s head coach after 22 years leading the Cougars. She compiled a career record of 530-133, and is only the fourth Bay Area high school girls basketball coach to reach 500 wins.
