Shawn Hipol has been hired as St. Joseph Notre Dame’s new girls basketball coach, Pilots Athletic Director Chris Pondok confirmed today.
Hipol was the head coach at Skyline High for the past five seasons and guided the Titans to a pair of Oakland Athletic League regular-season titles in 2010 and 2014, and a co-title in 2012. His overall record at Skyline was 95-46 with a 40-10 mark in OAL regular-season play.
Prior to being the head varsity coach, Hipol had been the Skyline junior varsity head coach for 10 seasons.
“I had been there 15 years. It was time for a change,” Hipol said today. “All the kids at Skyline have been great. The administration has been great. This has been hard for me to do.
But Hipol, a 1992 Alameda High graduate, looks forward to taking over the St. Joseph Notre Dame program. Hipol, who is an off-campus coach, said that a faster tempo will be implemented on his team.
“We were looking for someone to take the program to new heights. Shawn has shown he has staying power,” said Pondok, who was part of the hiring committee. “He’s obviously a great x’s and o’s guy.”
Pondok stepped down as St. Joseph Notre Dame’s girls basketball coach this spring, but will remain as athletic director, he said. Pondok had a overall record of 52-39 in three seasons as head coach.
