Boys Soccer: All-Star Game, Final Rankings, Standings, Stats

Monte Vista is the top ranked team in the East Bay after the DI title, and many told me they thought MV was the most talented team in the area. I guess it paid off in the end. SRV, a very, very good No. 2.
DIII champs YV get the No. 3 spot ahead of DII champ De Anza, thanks to a head-to-head win earlier in the year.
I know Clayton beat YV twice, but I gotta give the champs their due.

All-league teams? Player of the year?

  • Tovi Eliasen

For college coaches – can someone help with listing the all-star guys that are already committed to college soccer programs? Thanks.

  • Matt Smith

    Working on this 🙂

  • Matt Smith

Luis Lopez, De Anza- Cal State East Bay
    Ivan Jutamulia, Berkeley- MIT

I know there are more, and will keep asking.

  • Luman

    Hi Matt,

Curious to know your impressions of the off-the-field aspects of the finals you attended: coaches/coaching; officiating; spectators/atmosphere; facilities/p.a., etc. Any thoughts?

Dublin is becoming a regular field for Finals. How was Campolindo? How do the two compare?

  • Matt Smith

I thought the officiating was very good. It didn’t standout, and as you know, that’s a good thing, because play was allowed to flow freely. And as far as coaching, I saw all the coaches actively involved for a full 80 minutes, constantly urging players, making adjustments, etc….

The atmosphere at Campo was great. Packed stadium. Almost no empty seats. Dublin is a wonderful facility, and I like it as a place for the finals. I actually expected a bigger crowd considering how close it is to MV and SRV, but it was still pretty big.

  • Steve Lincoln

Does anyone know why there is an All-Star Game for NCS boys soccer, but not for girls? Anyone remember Title IX?

  • Matt Smith

    Hey Steve,

You might want to go easy on that Title IX stuff, and get some facts before you make statements like this. The girls are free to have an All-Star game. They can have as many as they want, nobody is stopping them. Someone that is affiliated with girls soccer should organize one. How about instead of getting on here and accusing me, amongst others, of being sexist, you organize it. Be proactive, and not reactive.

  • Steve Lincoln

No one was accusing anyone, friend. I simply asked whether anyone knew why there was a game scheduled only for the boys.

Title IX simply requires equal opportunities.

Why you would take it as an accusation of you is beyond me.

  • Matt Smith

“Anyne remember Title IX” is your way of “simply” asking?

You and the rest of the world have a different way of simply asking questions. I simply can’t imagine how anyone could see what you said as accusatory. What a nice way you framed that question. You’re a true gentleman.

The girls have equal opportunities, friend. Like I said, they can have 10 All-Star games if they want. I will suggest again that you organize it. Have fun.

  • Steve Lincoln

Here was the main question: “Does anyone know why there is an All-Star Game for NCS boys soccer, but not for girls?”

    Asking for facts.

I guess the answer is that no one has bothered to organize one. That could have been your response, rather than getting incredibly defensive.

I enjoy reading your commentary on both boys and girls HS sports. I had not realized until today that a (boys) all-star soccer game followed the season. I wonder why it isn’t publicized better elsewhere? Maybe someone would organize one for girls if there was a greater awareness of the boys all-star game.

You also may not be aware of some of the discrepancies that still exist between girls and boys sports at local high schools (court time, equipment, access to training facilities, etc.) Unfortunately, there is still a way to go forty years after Title IX was enacted.

  • Matt Smith

I’m a working stiff, who lives and works in San Francisco. The only pie I have my fingers in as far as the East Bay is concerned is boys soccer. I do it completely on a freelance basis. I offered to do the girls a few times, but that was never turned over to me. I probably would have organized a girls All-Star game as well had this been the case.

With all of this being said, next year I will have a website unaffiliated with the Bay Area News Group, and I will be attempting to cover the girls as well if I can build the network in time. That’s the goal. Maybe next year, there will be a girls All-Star game if I can get support for it.

We can agree that maybe you and I could have approached our initial messages differently, so I will take my responsibility in not being a better communicator.

  • tman

    Where will u post them?

  • Toe Kicker

BVAL was on Twitter Monday night.

  • Albert Martins – UC Merced

Thanks for organizing and all you do to put this game together!

  • Matt works his tail off for NCS Boys Soccer! The only reason we have an All Star game is because Matt Smith is AMAZING and put it together himself! The gals dont have a game cuz they dont have anyone excited enough about it like Matt is. Anyone can organize it if they wanted to, but you have to be able to sell it. Matt has been working at this for years. So in addition to being AWESOME, he has been this way for the long haul. It takes work, period. Matt does it. No one has risen to the occasion for the ladies. That is as much of a story as there is… nothing there. No offense or discrimination at all. Simply no one wants to do it enough the take the reigns.

As for publicity, NCS doesn’t market the All Star game at all. (They probably don’t want it actually). And so again, it’s Matt! He has generated the discussion, controversy, attention, etc. for years. But after 40 years of title 9… We didn’t get our guys all-star game until 3 years ago when it was suggested on this blog… And Matt rose to the occasion. Bought the shirts, booked the venue, organized the coaches (the most impossible thing to do), and pushed it himself, selecting players, inviting players, adjusting rosters… I’m exhausted just thinking about all he has done.

Short answer: Gals NCS soccer needs a “Matt Smith”.

  • Great year Matt! You worked your magic again. And set a new record. The paper would be crazy not to sign you again! Enjoy the off-season. See you next year for sure.
    Cheers mate!

  • TVsoccerman

I think steve Lincoln should organize the girls all star game. He seems to care for seeing one. Go for it Mr. Lincoln. With a last name like Lincoln your political prowl should make it easy for you to make it happen!

  • Real Matt Smith

  • Matt Smith

I’ve been informed there will be no snack bar at the All-Star game. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Beyonson

This has to be a sick joke.

  • Matt Smith

Lol, I’ll bring a Snickers bar, just for you.

  • Beyonson

    You won’t recognize me.

  • Steve Lincoln

    Hi Matt –

I wasn’t aware that you were the organizer of the All-Star Game. I thought that you were just reporting on it. I didn’t realize that you had a personal role in it. Kudos for what I am sure is a huge effort to make an event that that happen.

I wasn’t being critical in any way of the boys game. It seems like a great opportunity to have some very good athletes get to play/work together after being on opposing teams all season (and for the fans to see a game with all top talent). My only thought was that it would be cool to see something similar develop for the girls.

  • Matt Smith

    I see. That makes sense.

Ya, it would be great to have something for the girls. Hopefully I can make it happen next year.

  • Matt Smith

Here is a cool link provided by TV Soccerman. It is a Clayton Valley highlight reel, but will have other teams in it as well.

  • Matt Smith

Looking forward to tonight’s All-Star match. Here is a little information on the game that I probably could have been clearer on and put all in one place.

    Who is the game for?

The game is for seniors only, per NCS rules.

What is the purpose of the game?

The purpose is to promote the standout seniors, but also to help so many of these seniors get noticed by college coaches. I invite every coach from every school north of Fresno to the game. I feel the area is highly under-recruited and that there are plenty of college athletes playing soccer in the East Bay.

    How are the players selected?

They are nominated by their coach. The purpose of the nomination is to reward them for a great season, but a coach will also consider which kids have already committed to a school. So if a coach has four very deserving players, they may pick the couple that have not been recruited. Of course, some players, even if they have a spot for next Fall locked up, will be featured in the All-Star game.

From these nominations, I then try to spread the love to as many schools as possible, and I do my very best to not leave anybody out if it can be avoided. To the point where the rosters are very expanded.

How does the game come together?

A lot of hardwork on my end, and the generosity of others. Some help provide jerseys at a discount, help me get a venue and refs, others sponsor the event. It is without these people that the event truly couldn’t happen.

  • John Wondolowski

I want to thank you for putting together this game the last few years. I have been privileged enough to be able to work with the SRVHS team the past 21 years and to have a stage like this for the boys that you are doing this for – is something that truly serves the boys. I wish you were around and did this when my sons played HS soccer because they would have loved it.

I wish I could be there for the game and I am hoping for a good turnout. I will, unfortunately, not be there because Mrs. Wondo and I have developed a tradition over these past 21 years in which I re-introduce myself to her the weekend after the NCS Finals. There are a lot of nights and Saturdays during the four month season where I am pacing nervously in plastic grass rather than being at home – and I need her support so that there is a 22nd season approved by home management.

I’m looking forward to the new website next year and congratulate you on the on-line community that you have been able to create. I always look at your rankings to see who in NCS is doing well … but this will be my one and only comment. I just wanted you to know that your work is appreciated and every boy playing NCS benefits from it.

  • Jen

I’d love to see video or photos. Where can we go to find them? Thanks for a fun and amazing game. Such talent out of these young men. They should ALL see themselves playing college. If they don’t then I’m a monkeys uncle!

  • Cafu_3

Matt when will the season mvp be posted and the all-league teams

  • Jen

Hi there: have you been able to upload the video yet and if so can you post the link? Many thanks!

  • TVsoccerman

The East Bay High School Mens All-Star Game is now uploading. 16 GB of data to transfer! Will be viewable tonight around 9pm.
Go to https://www.youtube.com/user/ccgameofweek. All games that Clayton Valley Charter played this season are on the site, except Arroyo which I missed due to work. Enjoy! Congrats to Matt Smith and all his hard work. He deserves a raise and some praise for all his hard work.

  • High School soccer fan

that commentator guy is so annoying

  • TVsoccerman

But not as annoying as people who always bitch about everything.
Matt Smith must have great patience for the world. I do not.

  • High School soccer fan

I was talking about the guy who was commentating the pk shootout between Cal High and Clayton Valley. The guy who was talking as the players were about to shoot.

This video you produced is great. Sorry if I came off as rude.

  • TVsoccerman

No problem, that guy doing the PK’s was a big homer. Probably a parent with attitude! I seem to recall he was shooting the game with a video camera while he tried to announce. Madonna type headset attached to his big head.
Wait a minute, that was me? Lol

Sorry for the delay. Here is the final version of the East Bay Mens Soccer All Star Game. Had to add a few things to the original version.
