Family of Livermore golf prodigy to appear on ABC’s “Wife Swap”

It’s not exactly the most pressing news item you’ll come across, but I thought I’d pass it along anyways. Livermore High golf star Casie Cathrea’s family will be featured on the ABC show “Wife Swap” on April 16. Cathrea, a 13-year-old freshman, made national headlines in the Fall when she hit a hole-in-one while competing in the CVS/Pharmacy LPGA challenge in Danville.

I can pretty much guarantee this episode will be entertaining.

Foothill coach Mannion leaving for Oregon

Foothill High co-head football coach and athletic director John Mannion has accepted an offer to to become the coach at Silverton High in Silverton, Oreg.

“It’s a unique opportunity for me at this point in my career,” Mannion said. “It’s bittersweet because it was a tough decision to leave Foothill, but I am looking forward to it.”

Mannion joined the staff at Foothill in 1996 and coached under Matt Sweeney until 2007, when Mannion served as the head coach. For the past two seasons, Sweeney and Mannion have shared the head coaching duties.

“I’ve been blessed to work with Matt and the staff at Foothill for so many years,” Mannion said. “It really prepared me for this opportunity.”

Silverton is about 50 miles from the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis, where Mannion’s son, Sean, is set to begin his college football career in the Fall. However, Mannion said the proximity to Corvallis wasn’t a main factor in the decision.

Mannion also has three younger children, including his daughter Katie who is a sophomore on the softball team at Foothill. He said his wife, Inga, is looking at potentially teaching at a middle school in Silverton.

“He is one of the pillars at Foothill so this is a big loss for us,” Sweeney said. “Other than my immediate family, I’ve spent more time with John than anyone over the past 14 years. We did everything together.”

Sweeney originally offered Mannion a job on the varsity football staff after the 1993 season, but didn’t join the staff until 1996 after he took a job a social studies teacher at the school. The previous two years he taught at crosstown rival Amador Valley.

The Foxes went 4-6 last season and compete in the Oregon’s second-largest division — 5A. Silverton’s enrollment is about 1,250 students, while the city’s population is only about 9,600.

SRV’s Palsha to undergo Tommy John surgery

San Ramon Valley two-way baseball standout Alex Palsha is set to undergo Tommy John surgery next week and will miss the remainder of the season he confirmed Tuesday. Palsha, who is set to play at Cal State Fullerton next year, expects to miss 9 months while recovering from the procedure.

It’s a huge loss for the Wolves as Palsha is carrying a .615 batting avg through four games. Last week, he went 5-for-7 with a double, homer and 5 RBI. He’s also logged two innings on the mound without allowing a hit.

He’s projected to pitch when he gets to Fullerton.
