UPDATE: One thing I should’ve mentioned here is that another former OAL star, Skyline grad Yonus Davis, also had a big week for SJSU. He rushed for 143 yards and a TD on 18 carries, his first 100-yard game since Nov. 4, 2006 (He missed all but two plays of last season due to injury. Ironically, I was in attendance for both of his carries — at Arizona State and home against Idaho).

It looks like Kyle Bonagura needs to update his blurb about Kyle Reed in his post from earlier today. I was just down at San Jose State’s season opener against UC Davis and boy, was Reed impressive. He took the ball in the second half with the Spartans trailing the Aggies 10-0 and on his first drive he led SJSU to its first TD of the game. Then, in what might be SJSU’s defining moment of the season (I’ll explain more later) he led a perfectly scripted drive in the final minute and a half and threw a 17-yard TD on fourth down with 8 seconds left to Kevin Jurovich to give the Spartans a 13-10 win.

Reed started this game as the third-stringer and was only supposed to play one series. After that performance, he’s already been named by coach Dick Tomey (who I personally know after two years of covering the Spartans absolutely hates to give info on who will start) as the starter next week when SJSU heads to Lincoln to face Nebraska. How do you like that for your first college start? Actually, I doubt he’ll mind. For those that don’t remember, Reed was the highly recruited quarterback from McClymonds who signed on to play for Cal. After he lost the battle last year to Kevin Riley for the No. 2 job at Cal behind Nate Longshore, Reed left the Golden Bears and came to SJSU to have a shot to fight for the starting job. Although a broken foot by Reed and stellar play during camp by Myles Eden kept him lower on the depth chart to start the year, that doesn’t appear to be the case now.

Speaking of Riley and Longshore, how ironic is it for Longshore that his two backups during last year’s offseason both earned victories today while Longshore threw two interceptions out of his five passes. Maybe Nate was the third-best QB on the team entering last season. Anyways, SJSU may have just found a new quarterback that could lead them to another bowl berth and for him to be a Bay Area product could be invaluable for their recruiting future. At the least, it was a great game to see today. By the way, I ran into Alonzo Carter after the game (Reed’s coach at Mack) and he seemed to rather enjoy watching his former QB finally shine under the lights.

So I was sitting around watching College Gameday this morning and I got to thinking …. How many kids from the East Bay are playing D-I football and who should we keep an eye on this year. So I compiled a list of kids from the area playing D-I ball in the Pac-10, Mountain West and WAC along with who is where on their respective depth charts.

Enjoy.

Pac-10

ARIZONA STATE- Mike Marcisz (Granada) is listed at No. 3 on the the depth chart at left tackle.

ARIZONA- AJ Simmons (O’Dowd) will see time as the backup TE. Kyle Quinn (Liberty) and Haig Abnous (SRV) are also on the roster.

CAL- For obvious reasons, the Bears rely on more East Bay products than any school in the nation. RB Jahvid Best (Salesian), WR Michael Calvin (San Lorenzo), NT Derrick Hill (McClymonds), OLB Eddie Young (Berkeley), WR Sean Young (Berkeley) are all slated to start today’s opener. Jesse Brooks (O’Dowd), Donovan Edwards (Pinole Valley), and Matt Russi (Monte Vista) also may see time. Giorgio Tavecchino (Campolindo) handles kickoff duties and actually didn’t make the team until Wednesday per the ABC telecast of the game. Also on the roster: Sean Brown (Oakland Tech), Michael Costanzo (Monte Vista), Peter Geurts (Monte Vista), Drew Glover (O’Dowd), Chris Little (Castlemont), Shea McIntyre (Skyline), Nick Rosato (California, 2007 East Bay Defensive Player of the Year), Alex Stroud (De La Salle).

OREGON- The only starter from the East Bay is Ra’Shon Harris (Pittsburg) at DT, but Willie Glasper (De La Salle) will see time in the secondary, he’s currently listed as the backup at left corner. Also on the roster: Hayden Piper (Clayton Valley) and NaDerris Ward (McClymonds).

OREGON STATE- Patrick Henderson (McClymonds) and Latu Moala (Mt. Eden) are both on the roster, but neither is expected to play.

STANFORD- Ryan Whalen (Monte Vista) is starting at WR and led the Cardinal with three catches in the season opening win against Oregon State. Wopamo Osaisai (Pinole Valley) starts at corner.

UCLA- Michael Norris (Skyline) is starting at corner.

USC- Drew McAllister (Monte Vista) will not redshirt at USC. According to some stories out of L.A. he really turned some heads in camp and will be a special teams player in this, his true freshman season.

WASHINGTON- Neither Allen Carroll (McClymonds) nor Willie Griffin (McClymonds) are expected to make an impact in Seattle this year.

WASHINGTON STATE- Kevin Lopina (De La Salle) is the No. 2 QB for the Cougs and LeAndre Daniels (San Leandro) will likely redshirt.

WAC

BOISE STATE- TE Chris O’Neil (Miramonte) and C Thomas Byrd (McClymonds) are both starting for the Broncos, while Faraji Wright (Berkeley) is also on the roster.

FRESNO STATE- Nico Herron (San Leandro) is starting at linebacker. Jason Crawley (Pittsburg) and Rashad Evans (James Logan) are both listed as backup receivers. David Gory (Cal) is redshirting at TE and Andrew Shapiro (Las Lomas) is listed as the No. 2 kicker.

IDAHO- Virdell Larkins (Oakland Tech) is starting at safety and Michael Lee (San Leandro) and Tariiq Ikharo (Skyline) are also on the roster.

NEVADA- There are five guys on the roster for Nevada, but only Brandon Fragger (College Park) is on the depth chart as the No. 2 running back. Seems odd since the four others were probably better known in high school: Albert Rosette (De La Salle), Nick Graziano (Campolindo), Jeff Meads (Cal) and Zack Medonick (San Ramon Valley).

NEW MEXICO STATE- J’Barrie Jones (Freedom) is on the roster, but not on the depth chart.

SAN JOSE STATE- Of the eight East Bay alumni, only three are on the depth chart and QB Kyle Reed (McClymonds) is not the starter despite transferring from Cal to do just that. Kyler O’Neal (McClymonds) is No. 2 at his LB spot and Cameron Island (Skyline) is the No. 3 running back. Brandon Rutley (Alhambra), Ralph Johnson (McClymonds), Yonus Davis (Skyline), John Smith (DeAnza) and Jordan Johnson (Foothill) are also on the team. Update on KYLE REED

UTAH STATE- I’ve got to say I’m very happy to see Irvington’s Robert Turbin listed as one of two starting running backs for the Aggies. Was one of the best HS players I’ve had the chance to see and a really nice kid. Rob Hurst (Castlmonet) is starting at corner and the backup QB is Diondre Borel (Freedom).

MOUNTAIN WEST

BYU- Mosese Foketi (Logan) is on the roster.

Colorado State- Anthony Hartz (O’Dowd) is the backup punter.

New Mexico- Ben Contreras (Amador Valley) is the backup center.

San Diego State- Lane Yoshida (Pinole Valley) is the starting kicker. Also on the roster: Rob Andrews (Foothill), Brandon Davis (Castlemont), Hewitt Hunter (Acalanes), Michael Snead (Skyline), Avery Williams (Granada).

UNLV- Frank Summers is the starting running back and Lale Taiese is also on the roster. They are both from Skyline.

UTAH- Corbin Louks (San Ramon Valley) just scored a touchdown against Michigan and will see a lot of playing time as the No. 2 QB. Brent Casteel (Antioch) has three catches for 34 yards as of right now and is a starting reciever. Mo Neal (San Leandro) is a backup linebacker.

WYOMING- Orlando Arnold (Richmond) is the No. 2 TE for the Cowboys

Big 10

MINNESOTA – Logan U’u (Skyline) is on the roster, but not the depth chart.

PURDUE – Roberto Mcbean (Berkeley) is on the roster, but not the depth chart.

MAC

OHIO – The hero of the state title game for De La Salle, Travis Carrie, will most likely be redshirting this year for the Bobcats.

TOLEDO – Joe Bates (Skyline) is a starting corner.

C-USA

MARSHALL – Chuck Walker (Hayward) is on the roster, not the depth chart.

UTEP - Josh Ferguson (Hayward) is on the roster, not the depth chart.

————————————————

By schools: Skyline 10, McClymonds 9, De La Salle 5, Monte Vista 5, Berkeley 4, O’Dowd 4, San Leandro 4, Cal 3, Castlemont 3, Pinole Valley 3, SRV 3, Campolindo 2, Clayton Valley 2, Foothill 2, Freedom 2, Granada 2, Hayward 2, Logan 2, Oakland Tech 2, Pittsburg 2. The rest have 1: Acalanes, Alhambra, Amador Valley, Antioch, College Park, DeAnza, Irvington, Las Lomas, Liberty, Miramonte, Mt. Eden, Richmond, Salesian, San Lorenzo, Ygnacio Valley.

By leagues: OAL 24, EBAL 21, HAAL 12, ACCAL 8, BVAL 6, DFAL 6, DVAL 4, MVAL 3, BSAL

* I didn’t find any East Bay alumni in the ACC, SEC, Sun Belt, or Big East conferences.

–NFL QB updates– Matt Guiterrez (De La Salle) was released today by New England, making his the third East Bay QB alum to be dropped by an NFL team since training camps began. Kyle Wright (Monte Vista, 49ers, Vikings) and Sam Keller (Raiders) were the other two. Dennis Dixon (San Leandro) has made the Pittsburg Steelers 53-man roster. Ken Dorsey (Miramonte) will be the third string QB in Cleveland. Update on Wednesday, Sept. 3 by Jimmy Durkin — One name that was omitted here was Josh Johnson (Oakland Tech), who is No. 4 on the depth chart in Tampa Bay.
