Filling in for Matt Smith today with a little volleyball news. De La Salle has named Steve Siegmann, who was a co-coach on the 2011 Division I champion team, as its new head coach.

Siegmann takes over the job after sharing duties with Mike Hurlbut last season. Hurlbut stepped down after the season to spend more time with his family. The Spartans went 42-2 in 2011.

Siegmann has been a coach in the East Bay since 1998, and was named Coach of the Year in 2005 while at Campolindo. He’s a Northgate grad and has coached the junior varsity and freshman programs there. He has also coached the varsity teams at Antioch, Clayton Valley and Acalanes.

After leading the De La Salle High boys volleyball team to a North Coast Section title, the school’s sixth, co-head coach Mike Hurlbut is stepping down.
