On notice

It’s not too early to begin identifying the bubble players after the Raiders added an 11-man draft class Saturday and Sunday.

Like every other coach in the NFL, Lane Kiffin is stressing that’s open competition and no job is safe, although that’s never actually the case.

But with a new staff and an infusion of draftees as a few notable free agents, the following Oakland established veterans should bring A game to mini-camps and training camp:

– TEs Courtney Anderson and Randal Williams. Second-round pick Zach Miller will be given every chance to be the starter and Anderson got a $1 milllion raise based on incentives the club won’t have to pay if he is cut. Williams, a blown-up wide receiver, had too many drops last season. Free agent additions include Tony Stewart and Fred Wakefield.

– DE Tyler Brayton. Draftees included Quintin Moses in the third round and Jay Richardson in the fifth. Brayton had no sacks as a starter at right end. The coaching staff, however, loves Brayton’s work ethic and practice habits.

– S Chris Carr. Would seem unlikely, but both Johnnie Lee Higgins (third round) and Johnathan Holland (seventh round) have return experience. Kiffin was effusive in his praise of Higgins in this area.

– S Jarrod Cooper. Immensely popular with the fans and media, and possibly to Kiffin as well. But Kiffin made it clear “there’s work to do” on special teams and if he wants to sweep out vestiges of the last few years other than the kickers, then the captain is accountable as well.

– FB Zack Crockett. The arrival of free agent Justin Griffith and the drafting of Omar O’Neal could mean the end for the popular 33-year-old veteran.

– RBs Justin Fargas and ReShard Lee. With Dominic Rhodes arriving via free agency to team with LaMont Jordan, plus the addition of rookie Michael Bush, Fargas and Lee could be looking for jobs in August or September. Bush’s health plays a role here, although Kiffin said he expects the rookie to be ready for training camp.

– WRs Carlos Francis, Doug Gabriel, Alvis Whitted and Johnnie Morant: Jerry Porter will be the starting flanker, Ronald Curry is secure and Kiffin will give new acquisition Mike Williams every chance to succeed. Rookie draftee Johnnie Lee Holland is a good bet to make the roster, leaving one or possibly two spots for the four men above.

– C Adam Treu. The longest-standing Raider (1997) is coming off quadriceps surgery. If Jeremy Newberry’s health holds through training camp, the Raiders may opt to go with Chris Morris as a reserve center and long-snapper.

– QB Andrew Walter. New acquisition Josh McCown is a better fit for the Kiffin system and JaMarcus Russell is the future. If Russell is too raw, Walter’s best bet would be opening be opening as the backup. Eventually could face Marques Tuiasosopo’s situation of being a constant No. 2 or 3

Kiffin wrapup

Some of Lane Kiffin’s observations following his first draft with the Raiders:

– “Our guys had him evaluated as a first-rounder, and if he would have played, possibly a top first-rounder,” _ on drafting Michael Bush with the first pick of the fourth round Sunday morning, No. 100 overall.

– “We’ve had a number of sources who have told us that by training camp, he’s 100 percent,” _ on the condition of Bush’s lright eg, which was broken in the first week of the college season and needed surgery to insert a rod.

– “I don’t care when a guy was picked or how much money was given or what we gave up to get him. Our decisions aren’t going to be based on that because it doesn’t matter. To keep someone because you gave up a lot for him, that’s not putting your team in the best position to win,” _ on the wisdom of trading Randy Moss considering the invenstment they made to get him two years ago.

– “We would not make a decision to move a potential Hall of Fame player because of his effect on one player. That didn’t go anything into it, because we took JaMarcus is why Randy’s not here.” _ on the theory that Moss was dealt so his attitude would not be a factor with No. 1 pick Russell.

– “Big-time upside. Here’s a corner that has unbelievable speed and he’s got a chance to be really good. There’s obviously some work to do with him, as there is with all these players, but we’re real excited about his upside,” _ on John Bowie, the cornerback the Raiders took with the pick they got from New England for Moss in the fourth round, No. 110 overall.

– “Higgins is a really special returner. That was an area we needed to address. But we didn’t just get a return specialist . . .we got a receiver who had 90 catches last year, a very highly productive receiver . . . we were a little nervous that he was going to go. There was a run of receivers at about the start of three. We started to get nervous he was going to go but luckily he still fell to us with our 3-B,” _ on Johnnie Lee Higgins, the Raiders second selection in the third round.

– “Dwayne Jarrett didn’t play, and Steve Smith has a huge day and Frampton is just knocking himi out left and right, and Steve keeps holding on to the ball. Frampton was a big-time competitor who we think can really help us out on special teams as well,” _ on his impression of fifth-round pick Eric Frampton when USC played Washington State.
