A fateful collision
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, April 5th, 2007 at 7:03 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Darryl Stingley died Thursday, which means Jack Tatum is back in the news.
Two good men met at a fateful intersection of turf at the Oakland Coliseum on Oct. 12, 1978. Both had been given green lights.
Stingley was doing his job, reaching up for an unreachable pass. Tatum was doing his job, lowering the boom on a receiver in an attempt to dissuade others from attacking the Raiders in the middle of the field.
Former Patriots quarterback Steve Grogan was on ESPN Thursday and was bitter at Tatum for taking an unnecessary shot in a preseason game, saying he would find it difficult to ever shake Tatum’s hand.
This was Grogan merely taking up for a teammate, because he surely realizes that playing half-speed in a pre-season game is the quickest way to invite injury. You play football, you take your chances.
Tatum had hit people harder and Stingley had absorbed harder hits. But the men met at a perfect angle and with enough force to leave Stingley a quadriplegic, confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
In some quarters, Tatum was shamed for doing the very thing football fans pay to see, minus the tragic end result.
Check out any highlights show. Watch a game in person or in a sports bar. Every time a player gets “blown up” and gets up woozy and disoriented, the reaction is a groan followed immedately by joyous laughter.
The big hit is both the best and the worst the sport has to offer.
There are arguments to be made whether Tatum should have written a book entitled “They Call Me Assasin” two years after the hit, plus two sequels. Or whether Tatum did or did not make a legitimate effort to apologize.
But they in no way affect the life that has been led by a good and decent man who was by all accounts an excellent teammate. Yes, Tatum played hard, and there was a lot of over-the-top bravado in the book about “knockouts” and “limp offs.”
But Tatum played by the rules,. which were revised in the Stingley aftermath. Former Raiders coach John Madden, who spent considerable time at Eden Hospital after Stingley was injured, defends his former player in a Friday column by ANG Newspaper columnist Monte Poole.
And while there will always be those who hold Tatum accountable for something sinister as opposed to one of two parties in a tragic accident, he is revered by those who participate in a sport which is still defined by hitting and toughness.
At a workout at Cal a few years back for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Tampa Bay coach and former Raiders coach Jon Gruden was lamenting about how so many players of today have no sense of history.
He is fond of bringing in speakers to talk to his team, and couldn’t believe how some players had no idea who the guests were. Guys like Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones for instance.
Tatum, Gruden said, was different. Everyone knew Tatum, especially the defensive backs. He said players who gave blank stares when told of the exploits of Hall of Fame cornerback Willie Brown lit up at the mention of Tatum, who evenetually spoke to the Bucs.
Football’s toughest safeties, players like Ronnie Lott and John Lynch, invoke Tatum’s name as if he is the Babe Ruth of big hits.
Tatum knocking off Sammy White’s helmet in the Super Bowl. Earl Campbell making his reputation by absorbing a Tatum hit at the goal line and somehow staggering into the end zone. Tatum hitting Frenchy Fuqua to start off the “Immaculate Reception.”
Named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005, Tatum was a favorite of Ohio State coach Woody Hayes.
“On our defense, really, on our team, he would set the tone,” former teammate John Hicks told the Columbus Dispatch. “I know the old man (Hayes) didn’t really get rocking until Jack hit somebody.”
Teams fed off Tatum’s hits, opponents feared them, and fans watched closely, eagerly anticipating the next one. If either Tatum or Stingley had met a fraction of a second earlier or later, the story would not have such tragic overtones.
He would be like Lott, Lynch, Larry Wilson and others who caused receivers to hear footsteps.
Tatum has struggled with his health in recent years, losing his left leg to circulation problems caused by diabetes. He is active in raising money for youth diabetes.
Much will be made in the coming days of Tatum’s hit and whether or not he showed the proper amount of remorse or regret.
By the time training camp begins, fans will flock to stadiums and their televisions. They’ll all be waiting for the next big hit, with the potential for disaster pushed to the subconscious.
Until someone doesn’t get up.

Everybody remembers the Stingley incident, but how many remember a Raider rookie a few years later, who’s name I have have now forgotten, suffered a similar injury in a pre-season game against the Rams. That young man’s life was affected similarly to Stingley. But, he wasn’t a name player and the Ram’s defender never got the bad press Tatum still lives with.
April 5th, 2007 at 7:46 pm
The amount of vitriole being thrown Tatum’s way is disgusting. I didn’t hear one of these people mention the unfortinate Mr. Stingley until he died. If it hadn’t been a Raider that delivered the blow, you know their take would be different. Nice column Jerry, and unfortunately one of the only ones that will be appropriate.
April 5th, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Beautiful piece, Jerry. Tatum is one of the reasons I am proud to be a Raiders fan.
April 5th, 2007 at 8:27 pm
I wore a #32 Raider jersey playing IM sports in college. It made me try harder because of the vitriol thrown my way by the opposition. Still wear it sometimes, twenty five years later. Jack had a lot to do with Who We Are, a trendsetting ballplayer. I got two emails today from people who’ve known me a long time talking about this.

This article came up at the perfect time. The fighting that has occured as of late has been a fateful collision in itself. RIP Stingley. Sorry you had to be paralyzed but not sorry that Tatum was the type of football player he was. Tatum was just playing the game and you happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Its just too bad the unfortunate had to occur and he is now in a better place.
April 5th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
tatum isn’t at fault and should not have to apologize for anything to anyone, and i’ll bet that’s exactly what stingley thought. football is a violent game. anyone who takes the field is at some sort of risk.
stingley showed a TON of character by merely going on with his life, and that is extremely admirable. RIP.
April 5th, 2007 at 8:45 pm
In the NFL there are dirty hits and clean hits. Tatum’s hit was clean. The sad result allows people to cry foul but the reality is Stingley wasn’t the only guy to suffer a life-changing hit in this game. The demonization of Tatum is completely unwarranted. Given the NFLPA’s ignoring of long-term medical problems for past players any alleged compassion stinks of hypocracy.
Rest in peace Stingley and Live in peace Tatum, sometimes bad things happen and it isn’t anybody’s fault.
April 5th, 2007 at 8:48 pm
Tatum later lost his leg to diabetes. Karma? Maybe. It almost seems like a what goes around, comes around kind of thing but I’m not saying Tatum is at fault. Its just coincidence that both these men had some serious things happen to them.

Here is some AWESOME footage of the Raiders secondary in the 70’s. I watched this without the sound so I didn’t hear what everyone was saying but watching it is enough to make you cringe with how dominating the defense truly was.

Beautiful piece, Jerry. Very well-written and very thoughtful insights. I agree with Coach on Wheels in that there is hypocrisy in the demonization of Tatum. The game is not a contact sport but a collision sport. Tatum put the “c” in collision. And in fact, if you read thru the bravado of “They Call Me Assassin,” his tackling technique is very sound and one I employeed when playing ball. What a lot of people forget is that many people who deliver the blows injure themselves doing so more than those who receive the blows. Usually this results from poor tackling technique.
Stingley was one of my favorite players at the time. I felt sad that he got eliminated from football.
But Tatum and Lott, along with Marcus Allen and Bo Jackson, are my absolutely favorite football players of all time.
RIP Darryl Stingley. LIP Jack Tatum.
April 5th, 2007 at 10:37 pm
Sad to hear about Darryl. Seemed like a good guy who carried himself with great dignity after the injury.
It was a clean hit, tragic outcome.
My heart goes out to the Stingley family and to Jack as well.
Go Raiders, as always.
April 5th, 2007 at 11:09 pm
Well said Jerry, it’s amazing to read and hear the revisionist at work. The NFL network
has been laying it on thick, condemning Tatum, and it makes me sick. Everyone feels bad
for Daryl, but it was a legal hit, and that’s a fact. The revisionist would have you believe that it was a dirty play, which it was not. You have perfectly dissected the issue, and have shown true impartially.
I think you’re the only one that I’ve read that has presented all sides fairly, and has shown journalist integrity. Tatum
belongs in the Hall of Fame….
April 5th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
I met Tatum in person a couple of years ago. He looks like he is made out of cast iron - his musculature appears to of abnormally high density his bones thick as a rino’s. So when he hit Walker and Walker was able to fall forward into the end zone and score, that was something to awe!!! about. And we all “awed”, paused then laughed.
As far as diabetes, he took a lot of heads off, so to lose a leg versus a head- which would you prefer?
Tatum is a freak of nature and was born HOF material, but politics and fairness and like oil and water.
April 6th, 2007 at 6:07 am
Jerry,
Thanks for writing this. Eminently sane. Jack and Darrell share so much more than that hit, as you pointed out.
April 6th, 2007 at 6:29 am
There is one sane voice on the NFL network, someone who know a little bit about the safety position, Rod Woodson, in wrapping up the segment on the hit, he said it was an unfortunate outcome but there was nothing illegal or dirty about the play.
Tatum letting up on the play was not how the game was played back then (or now), by any team.
April 6th, 2007 at 6:32 am
PS: David Carr signed with the Panthers.
April 6th, 2007 at 7:08 am
Great article Jerry!
Anyone who knows football, has followed it for the last 40+ years and has half of a brain knows that the hit was legal in that genre. Many people still have a problem with the lack of remorse that Tatum showed. Becasue they can’t fault the hit, the blame Tatum on an ethical level. You or I may have handled it differently, but that was not Tatum’s persona. He had a reputation of being an “assassin”. I’m sure his “go about business” attitude kept him strong after that accident, and it keeps him strong today.
Good bless Mr. Stingley, may he and his family finally have some peace. God bless Mr. Tatum, and may the self proclaimed “juries” out there give this man a break. He did nothing wrong.
April 6th, 2007 at 7:10 am
As noted, Carr signed with the Panthers and the Raiders are in serious talks with the Lions for Josh McCown.
April 6th, 2007 at 7:37 am
What the HE…..!!! Everyone has to admit, the mere appearence that the Raiders are once again (second year in a row) sitting on the sidelines when it comes to FA quarterbacks has me pissed off. I am a season ticket holder and now am beginning to wonder #1 do FA quarterbacks just not want to come to Oakland? If so, that’s huge. OR #2 the team doens’t give a crap about trying to upgrade that position somewhat by seeing what’s out there. Miami is in the news, so was Carolina, as is Seattle for gosh sakes! Hey, Carolina has a QB but got insurance with Carr. Smells of last year when we sat on the sidelines and got chump boy Brooks. Come on Raiders, what is going on????
Hey CT. what do you mean they are in serious talk with Lions for McCown. What’s your source???
April 6th, 2007 at 7:42 am
ESPN Insider - John Clayton. Detroit and Oakland are talking trade for McCown. Expected value for McCown is a 4th or 5th rounder but who knows if it will get done. I hope so. I wanted Carr because he was a FA. Rumor has it that Davis is leaning toward CJ with that #1 pick. McCown makes sense if it is true.
April 6th, 2007 at 7:46 am
CT- thanks for the info. When was that dated from Clayton???
April 6th, 2007 at 7:58 am
It was dated 4/5/07. Clayton broke the story about trade talks. Todd McShay mentioned that Davis is leaning toward CJ.
This poses a bit of a dilema for Detroit though. If they trade McCown to Oakland, then Oakland probably drafts CJ. Detroit wants Oakland to draft a QB so that Detroit can trade down with TB, so TB can take CJ. Interesting stuff….
April 6th, 2007 at 8:04 am
Good point CT. Either way, Lions need to sit and watch because they don’t know WHAT we are going to do. Even if we don’t get a QB now, that doesn’t mean we still don’t pick CJ and the Lions will have screwed the pouch anyway. Okay, good news, at least I hope the Raiders are trying to do something instead if just sitting back like the past. I was just surprised they at least didn’t bring Carr in for a look……………
April 6th, 2007 at 8:08 am
Carr didn’t have interest in coming here. He viewed Oakland as being a mirror image of Houston with its porous line. This information I received from Jerry McDonald himself in an email exchange we had.
April 6th, 2007 at 8:17 am
Beautiful piece on Stingley and Tatum, Jerry. Thanks.
On the Oakland-Detroit negotiations … if AL is leaning toward CJ (and I still hope for JR as a chance at a franchise QB with limitless upside) … then why not talk sending Randy Moss (and maybe a pick or other player) to Detroit for their first round pick? They clearly are looking to market the pick anyway. Millen and just as importantly Mike Martz might salivate over having Moss take it to the NFC-North rivals once again. The Raiders, meanwhile, could take BOTH Russell and Johnson … and return to contention fast.
April 6th, 2007 at 8:29 am
Alright CT- Don’t be hording all the info.
What else did you and Jerry exchange?? Any other little nuggets we should know about. Specifically about the QB situation? Come on now, give a little brother. Jerry’s last few articles, when he does write them, are absent of juicy info. Anything come your way???????????????
April 6th, 2007 at 8:35 am
NC-Raider my friend, that was gold, just gold. I love the idea of having the one and two picks. It was actually brought up yesterday on ESPN. I’d love it, BUT, how do we pay the $$$ for not one but TWO top picks, AND what the LIONS would want is much more than Moss and a few picks. Moss is CANCER and no way Millen needs more distractions. He is already on thin ice. But hey, if they can pull that off, what a way to go………
April 6th, 2007 at 8:42 am
I wish I had more HT. Jerry gave me a heads up on McCown right before he wrote his article about him. He also mentioned that the Raiders were interest in Carr but the feeling wasn’t mutual. I promise to share any other “insights” I may obtain.
April 6th, 2007 at 9:06 am
Jamal Anderson might be available in the 2nd round. Talks are he’s slipping.
April 6th, 2007 at 9:08 am
The more I think about it. Raiders draft defense the entire 2-4th rounds. Beck is available in the 5th round or lower. The scouts don’t think highly of him.
April 6th, 2007 at 9:11 am
Raiders should pick up a good LB. There should be some pro bowl LB available 2-4th rounds and DT/DEs too. The Raiders are loaded at DBs, probalay a wasted pick for DB unless a can’t miss prospect slip to Raiders slots.
April 6th, 2007 at 9:14 am
I meant probaly “future pro bowl” LB/DT/DEs. The 1st round appears to be offensive oriented. The defense guys might be there in the 2-4th rounds.
April 6th, 2007 at 9:52 am
the faux sympathy on ESPN-hype about D. Stingley’s death makes me ill. every Sunday during the season they gleefully show their “jacked-up” segment as players get pasted, blindsided and knocked into next week. a quite ordinary blow from Tatum occurred in just the wrong way for the receiver not to rise, requiring the pro-Boston network to once again tell their Raider-hating audience how horrible Jack Tatum is. digusting. A joyous Good Friday and Happy Easter to you all.
April 6th, 2007 at 9:52 am
we should package gallery, moss, and a 5th round pick to detroit for mccown and the 2nd pick!!
there’s no way the nfl will even think of letting al have the 1st 2 picks in the draft. it would be sweet to see, though. the j-russ and CJ crowds could live in harmony. i think we all have a better shot of getting struck by lightning.
although, if we had the 1st 2 picks, it would be pretty hard not to take joe thomas with one of them.
April 6th, 2007 at 9:59 am
if stingley played for the raiders and tatum the patriots, we’d all be readind about the “perils” of playing football, rather than the antagonist tatum. as long as al keeps suing the league, the raiders will always be the villain–so it is, so it’s always been.
April 6th, 2007 at 10:19 am
Just read that former USC receiver Mike Williams, whose managed to piss off the Detroit coaching staff, wants out of Detroit and wants to reunited with former coach Lane Kiffin. I realize the $$$ issue is no small problem. But isn’t there a deal implied somewhere, where the Raiders grab McCown and Williams? If either happens, since we are talking QB and WR … how would this affect the endless JR v CJ debate? I have read so many good arguments for both on this blog that, yeah, I want both dammit. Although I agree, RGLC, we are all more likely to be struck by lightning (that was really fun, made me laugh out loud …). Seriously, though, if Mike Williams comes to Oakland, does that mean JR? If we get McCown, does that imply anything at all … I mean, he’s not Montana exactly …

I’m sure you all probably knew about this anyway - but this does add some fuel to the conspiracy theory - that somehow the refs are always a little bit more “sharp” on days when WE play and are able to pick out the dumbest F#@$ing penalties to call against us.
Can anyone figure out, year by year, who are the most penalized teams in the NFL, go back 15 years…..?
April 6th, 2007 at 10:57 am
who knows NC…..only al for sure.
both russell and johnson have potential through the roof. i happen to be on the johnson bandwagon. i understand the desire to draft russell, but i also think there’s a bit of a smoke screem surrounding him and brady. i don’t think either could shoulder the burden of being the #1 pick. it’s going to be a lot easier for johnson to transition to the nfl.
i’m still a believer in getting a back-up qb like harrington or mccown and giving the reigns to walter. i just have a hard time seeing russell being more effective than walter. i don’t neccessarily believe walter is hands down better than russell, i just don’t think russell gives us greater chance to be better. with the addition of johnson, i think walter becomes a better qb
if al knows anything about football, we’ll assume that he does, he should be the first to realize wasn’t qb play that turned his team into the league’s laughing stock last year. if he truly believes in his new coach he should draft johnson and bank on the idea of kiffin turning walter into our “franchise” qb of the future.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:01 am
Mike Williams is SLOW. He’s a possession receiver much like Gabriel. Williams and Gabriel are in the same MOLD. Calvin Johnson is a FREAK. He’s a SPEED/POSSESSION WR in one, plus have hands like super glue, that said being done. McCown ain’t worth a draft pick. He was sign as a FA. I rather wait till he gets CUT. Lions ain’t gonna pay 2mm for a BACKUP.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:04 am
I saw the pre-season Pats game back in 1978. Hate to say but it was an UNNECESSARY hit. Christ, it was a pre-season. Tatum should feel guilty Stingley is paralyze for life and gone. Tatum shouldn’t have suit for the game anyways.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:08 am
Harrington should fit Kiffen scheme. Let’s him and Walter battle it out. Harrington just need a change of scenery IMO. Oakland might fit his bill. Surround Harrington with weapons and the offense is gonna go wild, the same with Walter, the QB just manage games cause Kiffen is calling the plays from what I read.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:15 am
totally agree 100% bleeding-silver-and-black. add me to the list of “paranoid” raider fans. the league totally has it out for us. do you honestly believe the raiders committ more fouls than any other team….EVERY YEAR!!! no way. they just get called for more. officiating is totally subjective, and the raiders are more times than not victim of this “subjectivity”
the immaculate reception, the tuck rule, the “forward-pass”-bullshit play against the chargers last year, the list goes on. i know every team gets screwed, but it’s a weekly occurance for the raiders.
i live in montana–prime bronco country. i was sitting in a bar last year watchin the raiders-bronco game in oakland, surrounded by 25-30 douchebags… i mean bronco fans. there was a play where fabian washington CLEARLY, as expressed by everyone in the bar, made an interception near the sideline. all the bronco fans were overjoyed when shannahan challenged the play. they all joked,”we’ll get the call….it’s the raiders…” and of course, the int was overruled, with no explanation, just “incomplete pass”. it was a close game, and a play like that could’ve changed the outcome.
all the bronco fans chuckled and snickered. it was a joke to them. to use a hockey term, the raiders play on “tilted ice” and EVERYONE knows it
April 6th, 2007 at 11:26 am
If Grogan’s going to be ‘bitter’ about anything, it should be at his lousy pass that hung Stingley out to dry. Tatum was just playing hard. It’s actually a miracle that these kinds of things don’t happen more often.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:29 am
The Browns are RUMOR to select Peterson with the 3rd pick, regardless, say alot about Russell who Savage is suppose to be tight with and know him personally. If the Raiders rumor of taking Johnson, then, there should be rumor of Brown nabbing Russell. Apparently, the Browns don’t see him as a top 5 pick and possible BUST. Think about… the Browns should be estatic if Russell falls to them because of the rumor Johnson as Raiders pick, the papers should be all over taking Russell as the 3rd pick, so common sense is Russell is really a low 1st and 2nd round picks as projected by scouts PRIOR to the Sugar Bowl win over ND.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:31 am
i wouldnt want mccown. he lost the starting job to kitna, and look how bad they were already. he can throw downfield…. who can’t?
April 6th, 2007 at 11:34 am
Winston O - I was thinking the same thing! If Grogan wasn’t such a sh@tty QB, Stingley would have never gotten hurt. Grogan should shut his mouth.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:54 am
mccown or harrington would be back-ups. i don’t think we’d bring mccown in to start, same goes for harrington. between the two, i’d rather have harrington—he won’t cost us a draft pick. harrington would be a great back-up to walter. he seemes to be a stand up guy who wouldn’t make any waves, and could possibly help walter with his developement.
neither are the vogue choices we want………..neither was rich gannon.
April 6th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
what was russell’s draft stock before the sugar bowl??
was it really low 1st round?? anyone know??
April 6th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
JR didn’t even consider going pro until the buzz after the Sugarbowl. He then sat down with family to make a decision.
April 6th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
He decided to go pro after a meeting with Savage of the browns who told him they would take him with the 3rd pick if he came out…
Quick who was the last QB the Browns picked that was any good? Exactly
April 6th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
Kosar?
April 6th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
i was about 90% sure i wanted johnson, now i’m 100% sure. russell is truyly cashing in on the on atypical size and the strength of one game. sounds like the peferct recipe for a bust!!
April 6th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
my last post was 90% english…..my apologies.
April 6th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Let’s face it, JR is smart to come out. He leveraged the Sugarbowl and the fact that there are 3-4 teams in the top 10 that need a QB this year.
Look what happened to Leinart. Instead of coming out after his Junior year, he stayed in school another year. He would have gone #1 to SF. Instead he entered the draft a year later in which QB was not in demand. Just before the draft, the Titans canned McNair so they could get V. Young. No other teams needed a QB until Arizona at #10. Raiders at #6 didn’t think they needed a QB because they had Brooks and Walter.
If JR stayed at LSU, he might enter the draft in a year where top 10 picking teams don’t need a QB. Again, it is very simple. Its all about supply and demand…economics 101. Give JR credit for a least knowing how to play the game.
April 6th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
Although I am JR supporter - to play devil’s advocate -> look at Troy Smith. One game and he has dropped horribly in the draft and has lost millions of dollars…Do you all honestly think CJ is steve smith material?
April 6th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
if were gonna draft a guy based on one game, we should take chris leak. after all, he won the biggest game of them all…….
April 6th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
CJ and steve smith are on two different levels, CJ being on a much higher one. smith is 2nd reciever at best. while a good reciever, he doesn’t have the game breaking potential cj possesses. plus he’s 5 inches shorter, 40 lbs lighter, and 3-4 steps slower. two completely different players.
JR is playing his cards right, i’ll give him that, but wouldn’t you rather have someone(especially a such an important position) who’s ready to make the jump. i’ll be willing to bet the extra year at USC helped liernert’s developement, even though it may have hurt his draft status.
the qb most game-ready in this whole equation already plays for the raiders, #16.
April 6th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Maybe this all a ploy for a team to offer the Raiders the world to trade for CJ (i.e Giants & Chargers). If it is then Al Davis might not be senile after all….
April 6th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
I forgot the site but Russell was claim to be in the 25th selection of the 1st round. It was a realgmfootball.com forum site.
April 6th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
The Lions are taking Quinn if the deal fall thru with the Bucs. That’s what I read recently on one site.
April 6th, 2007 at 2:31 pm
I think the Steve Smith comparison is to the Carolina Panthers Steve Smith, not the one coming out of SC.
April 6th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
What do you guys think is going to happen to Moss?

Unfortunately, I think Tatum is villified for the hit on Stingley because of his behavior after the hit rather than for the hit itself. If he could go back in time would he react diferently? Who knows. His own actions are somewhat to blame for the backlash re receives to this day. If he had just gone to visit him in the hospital and expressed some kind of compassion instead of his prideful aloofness about the whole thing things may have turned out differently. Yeah, it was a clean hit and I wouldn’t expect him to apologize for playing hard, but his actions after the fact showed very little class.
April 6th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
Jack Tatum is still one of my favorite Raider. He made receivers think twice when going over the middle

I pretty much agree with Another Stupid Raider’s Penalty in that Tatum did nothing wrong on the field that tragic August evening, but his actions after the fact left a lot to be desired.
I don’t quite get Art Shell’s Hat’s rant. What’s the big deal about people wanting to talk about the upcoming draft? Topics change all the time; new ones spring up, old ones die off. Who cares?
April 6th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
Arts just pissed he got fired after one season
April 6th, 2007 at 3:42 pm
I’m with you Winston O. Besides, who cares what a piece of clothing thinks? What a DA.

April 6th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
http://www.sports-central.org/sports/2007/04/06/raider_nation_waiting_in_anticipation.php chk this out. Basically the first and sixth rounds are where most of the quarterbacks are taken in the first six rounds — almost 50%. This means we should draft CJ and which ever QB available in the sixth round, sounds reasonable since Brady, Bulger and Hasselbeck were sixth round picks.
April 6th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
No CT. He actually has one hand on the computer and the other playing with himself
April 6th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
Bite me Art Shell….Spreading freedom and democracy ? You come on here like an a$$ telling others what to talk about ….you need a life this is JUST a blog site where people with a common interest (The Raiders) talk about what ever…there are no rules stated or even asking us to stay on the subject. If you look look at every other article here you well see comments all over the spectrum….If some one here wants to talk about seeing someone at Raider Headquarters empty the trash …so what… who are you ? Hitler ?
April 6th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
We hated this guy so much on our baseball team that we took a crap in his hat. OPEN WIDE ART SHELL’S HAT

Dude…Shell…There’s a ton of porn on the internet bro. Why don’t you take a break and learn to just relax?
April 6th, 2007 at 4:42 pm
Don’t forget that Matt Millen (Ex-Raider) of all people is the GM for the Lions. Millen would probably help Davis before he ever hurt him so he could be working out a pretty sweet deal with Davis to keep both teams happy. I would not care at all to see the Lions trade McCown to the Raiders for Moss. Moss would be back on the East Side in the same division he started in. Moss would get to face the Vikings and the Moon Shine Packers twice each. I could see the Lions drafting Quinn after trading McCown so long as it was agreed upon between Raiders Davis and Millen.
April 6th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
I doubt Moss goes to the Lions. Moss keeps saying he wants to win a SB & from the looks of it the Lions will prob be there when hell freezes over
April 6th, 2007 at 4:56 pm
Memo - I don’t think the Raiders are going to be concerned with how Moss “feels” if they trade him. They’ve already had enough of his “feelings”.
April 6th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
RIP Darryl Stingley. the Nation sends their condolences to the Stingley family and the Patriots org.
April 6th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
i don’t think moss is going anywhere. no one wants to pay him. that said, i still think we should draft johnson and a qb in later rounds. go get mccown, but preferably harrington to back up walter. this, to me , is our best shot at being competitive. improved coaching and o-line play is my reason for giving walter another chance.
it really mistifies me that walter gets lost in all this russell/quinn hooplah. walter is essentially a rookie and should be given the oppurtunity to be the raiders qb.
April 6th, 2007 at 5:31 pm
Harrington might be another Gannon, BUT, with a better arm and release. He didn’t have the weapons in Miami and still manage 6 wins. That said alot. Let’s give Walter some competition a as starer.
April 6th, 2007 at 6:12 pm
R.I.P Stingley! Prayers go out to the family, football can be a harsh sport. But the Patriots org. gets no symphathy from me.
Have you silly rabbits learned anything yet? Moss will be the opening day starter for the Silver & Black, if we do trade for one of the Lions QB’s we’ll be sending a late round pick for him. THE OAKLAND RAIDERS WILL SELECT CALVIN JOHNSON WITH THE #1 OVERALL PICK and see which one of the other 31 teams wants him more and are willing to give up the barn to get him from us, if no team is willing to match Davis and Kiffins desires then we’ll procceed into the ‘07 season with the best receiving core in pro football history. As intrueging as Jamarcus Russell career MIGHT be, its going to be far more intrueging to see teams try to cover Porter and Moss on the sidelines and Calvin Johnson running routes in the slot against back- up CB’s and Safties. Imagine how much better Larry Fitzgeralds career would have been if he came in with Porter & Moss already on the squad.
OFFENSE:
QB: 1. Walter 2. McNown 3. Troy Smith
WR: 1. Porter 2. Moss 3. Johnson 4. Curry 5. Madsen
OL: LT: Gallery G: Boothe C: Grove G: McQuistan RT: Sims ( Sims, Hulsey, Newberry, Slaughter)
RB’s: 1: Jordan 2: Rhodes
FB’s: 1: Griffin2: Lee
TE’s : 1: Anderson….. hopefully he steps his game up or one of the new FA takes over
THATS IT BOYS END THE SPECULATION ALREADY!!
GO RAIDERS
April 6th, 2007 at 6:52 pm
Fellas - I live in Boston and today I was horrified about what I heard on talk radio. The most popular radio host in Boston said he was glad Tatum has lost both legs and called him a piece of garbage. Callers agreed. I agree with post about how Jack handled it afterwards as the main problem for him. Surprised and disappointed he wasn’t more gracious afterwards. Haven’t heard anyone from ESPN/NFL talk about it, but all the Patsies fans out here hate Jack. They cite fact he wrote a few books to profit from the hit as their rationale - and how he set up that fake get together in ‘96 to reconcile with Stingley. Turns out Stingley cancelled when he heard it was just pr for another Tatum book. Interesting thing is how Pats fans hate Tatum, but love Rodney Harrison, perhaps the cheapest/dirtiest player in the league. Sad story all around, and on many fronts.
April 6th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Just saw an interview with Marc Trestman on ESPN. Very high praise for JR and his future in the NFL.
I’m still on the bandwagon, but there are a lot of different scenarios that could benefit our guys. I can’t imagine we would pick CJ without someone to throw him the ball, so I’m sure if we do there’s a plan for that. I hope.
I’m not Lane Kiffin, or Al Davis, or Greg Knapp, so take it for what it’s worth; I’m not sold on this whole Josh McCown thing. His career stats are not stellar, and he didn’t exactly set the world on fire when given the starting job in Arizona. If we have to have CJ, then I’d rather take John Beck later on and sign the guy the Fins or Bucs release. AW gets his shot, a vet to push/start ahead of him, and a younger guy to develop and do mop-up when we’re beating the Chiefs by 35…
April 6th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
The post mentioning ESPN’s “Jacked Up” (which lost its flavor this year without all the bro’s shouting “Jacked Up”) was spot on. Tatum would be a weekly feature on Jacked Up if he played today or it was in effect when he played. In fact, I could see Cosell doing it on the Monday Halftime Highlights with Dandy Don shouting “Jacked Up!” in a drunken voice.:))))
April 7th, 2007 at 6:10 am
3 weeks ’til draft boyz!
April 7th, 2007 at 6:52 am
Anyone know when our mini-camp will take place. I know we are allowed by league rules to conduct an extra mini-camp prior to the draft if you have hired a new coach in the off season. (What else is new with the Raiders???)
April 7th, 2007 at 8:23 am
I hear alot of drafting johnson and having moss and porter and johnson in the slot and ya who can cover that WR set… probably nobody that i know of. But do you really think moss is gonna be happy when johnson is getting alot of credit. Moss will just do the same shit he pulld last year if they throw the ball to johnson instead of moss. so thats why i’m saying if we are gonna draft johnson then we are gonna have to trade moss. I don’t really want to trade moss because he is a good WR when he wants to be. Then if al getting johnson then this is what i would probably do in the offseason. trade for Mkcown and lose a 5th round draft pick or just pick up a FA QB. Then trade moss probably to the bears for OLB Lance briggs and move him to WLB. then our linebackers will be raw and have howard at SSLB morrison at MLB and Briggs at WSLB. Then we have a veteran linebacker to help out our young defense. then i would convert Bing to SS and have him battle it out with schwiegert and WARD and move huff to FS.
then befor the draft we will have 4 QB walter booty Mkcown(or FA) and otis. So then when we go into the draft the only help we will need at is at d_line and offense.
this could be agreat possible result…
1 calvin johnson WR
2 Lamarr woodley de
3 Troy smith QB
3 Tank Tyler DT
4th andy alleman G
5th Mike ottoT
6th Garret wolfe running back
7th Dan santucci G
7th Yamon figurs WR
If you guys were wondewring were i get these guys off heres the website
http://www.thefootballexpert.com/buresmockdraft.html
well n e ways wat do you guys think of this 1 and offseason moves
April 7th, 2007 at 8:26 am
But i doubt that the raiders wiil trade moss and therefore what i just wrot above was just a possible scenario if we had trade moss.
April 7th, 2007 at 10:09 am
The notion of keeping our #1 pick and making a deal with Detroit for its #2 pick (floated above) is a good thought exercise. Using the value chart (thanks again, bs, for finding that), if assuming we did NOT package any players (e.g., Moss), that #2 pick would roughly cost the rest of our 2007 picks (#3 on down) plus all of our 2008 picks (#1 on down, valued at middle of each round). That’s a lot to give up.
So, consider if we did not have the #1 pick. What kind of player would be worth giving up all those draft picks? The idea discussed above is to package a deal so we could take both Johnson and Russell. I could see making that kind of deal for a rare talent that does not come along every year AND who is about as close as you can get to a sure thing. I could see making that deal for Calvin Johnson–who, it appears, will be the top receiver for the next decade. I have serious doubts that Russell is worth that deal.
In all, it suggests that the smart thing to do with the #1 pick is to take Johnson. If, in fact, Russell is really worth that deal after all, then package a king’s ransom for Detroit.
April 7th, 2007 at 10:09 am
tatum has only lost one leg
April 7th, 2007 at 10:18 am
Any thoughts on whether the Dolphins will keep Ricky Williams on the roster or cut him loose? If they keep him, how cheap could you trade for him? Would Kiffen want to be bothered?
April 7th, 2007 at 10:44 am
I’m starting to think that Walter is going to get another chance to start this year… Think about it. Davis is keeping everyone from the OL last year, even Slaughter and Hulsey. He even reelected to keep SIMS for 6.5m and kept Jordan. I think he truely believes that Shell screwed up everything and that these guys have talent. If Davis isn’t going to hold the other 10 players on offense accountable, I don’t think hes going to hold Walter accountable. Certainly not after we passed up on ML last year.
I think Walter is going to get another chance next year…
April 7th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Who thinks Al will once again be a maverick and pay the #1 exactly what he’s worth? One to to million a year with incentives. Why would you pay a ROOKIE half your payroll when he’s done NOTHING FOR THE TEAM or IN THE NFL. ” Great college stats, thanks guy but I’ll pay you when you deliver for me!” If he doesn’t like it, go to the CFL! You saw what that did for the Rocket and countless other guys. No endorsements, no fame. Maybe that’s what needs to happen so the draft won’t be such a crap shoot anymore and more teams will field better players than consistently crap cellar teams that are being put out now. Just a thought. San Diego did what it had to with Eli but if the owner had any balls he would have stood up for himself and his team and told Eli and his dad to …..well you know. Salary caps would be put in check and teams would be managed better.

Kris Jenkins - DT - Carolina Panthers - On the Trading Block
ProFootballTalk.com
We’re hoping that Jenkins gets traded to the Raiders, so that he can play alongside his idol (eye roll), Warren Sapp. Said Jenkins about Sapp in 2005: “I hate him. Everybody says I’m supposed to be polite when I talk to you all, but I hate him. He talks too much, he doesn’t make sense, he’s fat, he’s sloppy, he acts like he’s the best thing since sliced bread. He’s ugly, he stinks, his mouth stinks, his breath stinks, and basically his soul stinks, too.”
Jenkins also said that seeing Sapp celebrate on the Panthers’ home field after a 2004 game that Jenkins missed due to a season-ending shoulder injury drove Jenkins to stop going to the team’s games — and to increase his consumption of alcohol.

RIVERS STILL LIMPING
At a time when the Chargers are somewhat inclined to cling to backup running back Michael Turner in the event that starter LaDainian Tomlinson goes down with an injury, they might need to rely on a backup quarterback.
An industry source tells us that Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is still struggling with a foot injury that he suffered in the team’s playoff loss to the Patriots.
Per the source, Rivers is out of the boot he had been wearing. But it’s been twelve weeks since he suffered the injury, and it’s not clear when he will be 100 percent.
Surgery initially was regarded as a possibility, but Rivers in the end did not go under the knife. Maybe, in hindsight, he should have.
The other quarterbacks on the roster are Billy Volek and Charlie Whitehurst.
April 7th, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Norv Turner = Bad luck. Turner inherits a great team in San Diego and hes bound to mess it up all by himself but it doesn’t help when your young starting QB of the future is still limping.

Bensinger: What teams have you met with so far?
Brady Quinn feels he is the most prepared player in the draft.Quinn:
The Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Browns. I’ve also got meetings scheduled with the Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions. Then, the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming in next week to South Bend to do workouts.
April 7th, 2007 at 3:25 pm
Remember when Ricky Williams was the “sure thing” in the draft? Remember how crazy everyone thought the saints were when they drafted Deuce McCallister when they still had Ricky? Remember when they traded Ricky and everyone thought they were nuts? Seems like a good move now. My point is NO rookie is a sure bet. and for all we know Russell, Quinn, and Johnson might all bust. Hell, Michael Vick is a dope fiend and I dont need THC residue in his little water bottle stash compartment to know it. Look at his eyes sometime. Any one of these guys could be the next una-bonger. I bet upwards of 60% of the NFL are smokin it up. I’m glad it’s not my money on the line on draft day, but if it were I would still go with Calvin Johnson. Who knows, maybe JaMarcus Russell had the munchies before the combine.

Any chance we can bring back jeff george and have fat whitlock write stories about a comeback for JG.
April 8th, 2007 at 12:12 am
Bleeding, I don’t want to sound like a prick here, but are you even remotely aware of how the draft works? Contracts are based on the previous years contract given at the same position with a slight increase. If you actually think for a second that anyone other than you or me is going to accept an offer a one million dollar contract you are sadly mistaken. Said player would tell the Raiders to go get bent and voila, you have wasted your biggest asset. They would have zero recourse. If a player and team cannot come to an agreement and that player decides to sit out a season, he just gets drafted the next season by another team. That’s how the Bucs lost out on the great Bo Jackson. Bo did not want to play for a horrible team and just decided to play baseball for a year and re-entered the draft the next year. Raiders stole him with something really stupid like a seventh round pick or something….I hope you were joking.
April 8th, 2007 at 7:03 am
So you’re telling me that when a player is drafted the team has his rights for only 1 year and that player may wait for 1 year and play somewhere else? This may be the legal mumbo jumbo of draft/NFLPA rules but just like the Franchise Player rule that’s just about the most ridiculous idiotic agreement I’ve seen. That’s why player contracts are out of control and only a few teams field decent record records every year. Do you make a new employee the highest paid employee in the company? I didn’t think so. That’s why you have players that don’t develop any work ethic because success has already been bestowed. It may be the rule but common sense says its not very smart and just because it is a written rule doesn’t mean it needs to be revised. Ever herd of a lemming?
April 8th, 2007 at 7:05 am

Or… Raiders at the opponent 10.. Walter have time .. CJ is open downfield .. a 50 yard pass to a Johnson down the sideline… Johnson makes the catch.. goes by one CB.. a missed safty tackle… goes by another CB… at the Raiders 5… 1… Touch Down Raiders! Touch down Raiders ! Papa screamin!

This is a blog site nothing more and people have a right to come here to talk about nothing if that is what they desire…..even you get to go on moronic rants. A beacon of truth ? Most things here are just opinions, conjecture or just people conversing a little back and forth. You are way to full of yourself. There are many sites to go to if you would like to talk about more serious matters other than football…..but judging from your rants I don’t think you would do well. You seem to think this is a competition. Did you post something that you thought to be true and was such a beacon of truth it was going to make us all admire you ? If you think Al is the Anti Christ I could not care less …you have missed the point. Myself and others here do not need or want you trying to tell us what we should or should not be talking about…when you act like a moron don’t be surprised when people respond to it and give it right back …. So if at any time you feel you can converse like you have some common sense even if we do not agree that would be great……I will never try to tell you what you can or cannot say and I will expect that same sort of respect from you.

by the way, i think the raiders should draft calvin johnson and mini camp is this week.
happy easter!!
April 9th, 2007 at 2:13 am
Moss and Calvin Johnson. Yeah.. the next dynamic duo. Baily and Bly cannot cover the Raiders wideouts or the entire league. LOL… Porter,Curry,Gabriel, etc. in the slot. Open that field baby for the running game. Just reload!
April 9th, 2007 at 2:15 am
Rhodes and Jordan.. both rushing for over 1000 yards easily. The defense gonna get confuse covering the Raiders offense. Wonder who is the second string QB assuming Walter is the starter. We’d need a vet QB.
April 9th, 2007 at 2:17 am
Finally, someone like CJ catching Walter rifle passes. No more dropsy from Porter. LOL.. this might be Porter make or break season IMO. Moss is the real deal. I still keep the guy!
April 9th, 2007 at 10:04 am
Moss is the real deal based on what?? Raiders Fanatics, you are delusional….and a hopeless romantic when it comes to Moss….lol.
April 9th, 2007 at 10:28 am
Joey Harrington just signed with the Falcons as a backup. Not that I think he was a good fit but I see others had mentioned him as an option.
April 9th, 2007 at 10:28 am
Joey Harrington signed a 2 year contract with the Atlanta Falcons.
Cooper Carlisle has met with the Seahawks and Buccaneers and is supposed to meet with the Raiders sometime this week.
April 9th, 2007 at 10:30 am
Falcons agreed to terms with Joey Harrington on a two-year contract.
Harrington showed he’s a capable backup in Miami, but his weaknesses show up over time. Moving to Atlanta seems unlikely to rehab his value depending on how Bobby Petrino’s offseason translates to the pros.

Rumor has it that Jenkins DT for carolina is on the trade block and all their asking for is 4 a mid round draft pick. Also it was said that jenkins idol is sapp. Why not give Carolina 1 of our 3rd round draft picks for him. Sounds like a good plan to me. IDK how many years sapp has left in him but if we were to git jenkins, sapp can mentor him to make jenkins the next warren sapp. Also if we were to do this trade we would still have 4 picks in the first 100 picks. then by gitting jenkins it would eliminate the need for a runstopping DT and then in the draft we can just pick up a DE to go on the other side of burgess. Then basically our defense would be really good. they would be better if they moved bing to SS and huff to FS. then with 1 of our picks that are in the top 100 we can pick up OLB like antwan barnes or rufus alexander sound good or what. so we should do this trade for jenkins and then draft these people
1 jamarcus russel QB
2 Lamarr woodley DE
3 OLB quincy black
4th andy alleman G
then with the 5th round pick we have we can get another T and garret wolfe and use the rest on whatever else we need. I still believe our o-line has talent and that it was just art shell and his boys that F erythang up. so thats why i’m saying to just draft like 2-3 o-linemen
April 9th, 2007 at 11:34 am
The problem is Jenkins is injury prone having missed the two years prior to last year… No doubt he is great when not injured but that is not very often.
April 9th, 2007 at 11:36 am
This is from Profootballtalk.com. This doesn’t sound like Sapp is much of an idol to Jenkins.
April 9th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
Sounds like he might be applying for president of the Sapp fan club lol
April 9th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
The last thing we need is our DT’s attacking each other instead of the opposing teams offensive line. If the guy is gone with a mid round pick then he probably doesn’t have what it takes in this league anymore. We don’t need any dead weight.

Raiders Should Stay Away From Quaterback Scraps:

Raiders won’t pass on Russell
By Bob McManaman
Arizona Republic
Jamarcus Russell could become Oakland’s first long-term franchise quarterback since Kenny Stabler.
MICHAEL CONROY | Associated Press
Despite disappointing times at the combine, Southern California receiver Dwayne Jarrett could go No. 11 to the San Francisco 49ers.
CHRIS CARLSON | Associated Press
The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 28; this mock draft looks at one possible scenario.
1. OAKLAND RAIDERS: JAMARCUS RUSSELL, QB, LSU.
Assuming they resist the temptation to take Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson, the Raiders can’t go wrong with Russell, who could become the organization’s first real long-term franchise quarterback since Kenny Stabler. But Oakland needs a veteran QB presence, not only to help tutor Russell, but to try to win some games to keep the Raider Nation at peace. Andrew Walter and Josh Booty aren’t the answer.
2. DETROIT LIONS: JOE THOMAS, OT, WISCONSIN.
As much as they could use a quarterback of the future — a la Brady Quinn — the Lions probably pass and take one of the best linemen to ever come out of the draft in the 6-foot-6, 311-pound Johnson, who will add instant credibility to a running game featuring Kevin Jones and Tatum Bell. As for the QB situation, good luck with Jon Kitna and Josh McCown.
3. CLEVELAND BROWNS: BRADY QUINN, QB, NOTRE DAME.
There’s been a lot of speculation the Browns are leaning toward Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson, and the free-agent signing of Jamal Lewis may not preclude that from happening. But Quinn seems the right fit here, as the Browns are going nowhere with Charlie Frye. Quinn’s an Ohio native and has said he’d like to play in Cleveland. Picking him gives the organization some instant credibility with Browns’ fans.
4. TAMPA BAY BUCS: CALVIN JOHNSON, WR, GEORGIA TECH.
Wow! If Johnson is still here, Bucs coach Jon Gruden is turning cartwheels. Johnson is regarded by many as the best football talent in this draft, and his combination of size, strength and big-play ability will help take Gruden off the hot seat. Joey Galloway is getting up in age and Johnson offers an immediate impact. As for who’s going to get him the ball, well, it could be anyone from Jeff Garcia to Chris Simms to Jake Plummer.

Harrington sign with the Falcons. It’s hard to give a backup QB 6mm for 2 years.

$6M for 2 years is the going rate for a backup QB. McCown, Carr and Harrington are all getting it.

Well, I have been away for a few days and I`m certainly glad to find out Carr and Harrington are gone, maybe that will put an end to all of those wishful thinkers who were willing to hand them the reigns of the silver and black.
I`m also glad that Kiff and Al did not share their “vision” for our future, and make no mistake, if they wanted any of them, specially Carr who had the most buzz, they would have gotten him.
The path is clear now for us to take one of the QB`s and let him compete with AW and perhaps MCown for the job.

My true pick of Brady Quinn is looking more clear by the minute. There is no way Kiffin goes into the season with just Walter. Love Calvin Johnson but I would love seeing Quinn at the helm in the next year or 2 with Walter getting the nod for next year. We already have a big arm in Walter to throw to Moss and Porter and Co. Its all about getting the smart and intelligent hard worker for a QB in Quinn for our franchise. No doubt about it.

I don’t know about paying upfront money of 60mm for the QB drafted to play behind Walters. Moss and Porter ain’t garantee to stick around after 2008 or sooner. I don’t think backups could get the yardage and respect like Moss and Calvin Johnson. Porter been around since 2000 and done nothing so far in sense of numbers. He never went over 1000+ yards or pro bowl. Moss is the real deal. Pro bowler for years and went over 1000+ yardage numerous times.

Like it or not Moss is a talent on the field. Football is about talent and getting respect, as long as Moss ain’t a criminal I can live with him being a Raider and main threat. No one on the roster WR is gonna get nthe respect Moss commands on the field.

What’s the MAX allowable number of draft picks a team could have going in the draft? Someone posted like 10 picks. If that’s true, then getting more picks is meaningless unless lower picks are package to go up in the higher rounds.

Moss is busy opening smoothies business I read on one site. I believe his reason not being around mini camp so far, plus he’s a pro and will work it out with the coachs. Lane Kiffen needs helps from vet players and brass, I don’t believe he can come in and do it by himself in sense of coaching. Gotta surround the kid coach with talent and IMPACT players to be successful IMO. It’s a pipe dream saying he’s gonna change everything to the positive.

What 60 million upfront are you talking about Raiders fanatic??.
The first pick will get between 30 and 35 for 5 or 6 years guaranteed, thats about 6 million a year out of a 109 million cap…. which is what offensive guards are getting paid this days, and you think that is too much to invest on a QB?…if the guy is good, he can earn the remainining 20 or 25 million tied up to performance incentives.

Is that like 30mm garantee… the rest is salary. That’s still alot. The kid gotta be impact and start. If the Raiders select a QB he’s gotta start IMO. Let him go thru the bumps and brusies. That’s rebuilding NOT reloading.
