OTA notes

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, May 30th, 2007 at 1:33 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Quick hits from Wednesday’s organized team activity access period:

– There were some serious protection issues during a team session, with the first offensive line unable to prevent defenders from poring in from all angles against Josh McCown, Andrew Walter and JaMarcus Russell.

McCown is light years ahead of both Walter and Russell in creating on the run when the protection breaks down. Kiffin said players who were McCown’s teammates in Arizona (Fred Wakefield) and Detroit (Mike Williams) said the quarterback was always one of the first taken in pickup basketball games.

“He really is a tremendous athlete, and has great ability to escape pressure, as you saw today a couple times,” Kiffin said. “He’s even quicker when you go from drills to when all of a sudden we’re in team (sessions) and he even looks quicker.”

– The Raiders first-team offensive line remained the same as it was last week _ Barry Sims at left tackle, Robert Gallery at left guard, Jake Grove at center, Cooper Carlisle at right guard and Paul McQuistan at right tackle.

“We’re not playing a game today, or tomorrow, Kiffin said. “We’re not worried about that. We’re worried about guys getting better and finding out the best five and what position they’re going to be at. We’re going to continue to try a lot of different situations.”

– Who was that No. 34? LaMont Jordan, an inconsitent receiver when he had 70 receptions two years ago but led the league in drops, and a non-factor in the passing game before being injured last season, made a pair of eye-opening grabs.

On one, Jordan reached up away from his body for a McCown pass under blanket coverage by Michael Huff and made the catch. Later, he extended for a pass some 40 yards downfield and caught the ball.

– It appears Jerry Porter’s switch to jersey number 81 has been derailed by financial concerns. Porter said to switch his jersey would cost $210,000 _ a $130,000 charge from the league and $80,000 from the Raiders.

“Man, there’s a couple of nice cars I’d like to get for that money,” Porter said. “I could buy a nice vacation home, or at least go half on one with someone else.”

Porter continues to be the clear standout among Raiders receivers. He caught one deep post for a score from McCown.

Porter was still wearing No. 81 Wednesday.

Update: Got a return e-mail from NFL spokesman Greg Aiello regarding the cost of Porter changing his number. The money paid out by Porter would not be to the NFL, accoridng to Aiello.

“We would not charge him anything, but Reebok and the Raiders would have to be reimbursed for the Jerry Porter 84 Reebok jerseys they have in stock, ” Aiello said. “Or Jerry can wait until next year to change numbers when the stock of his jersey is depleted. The more advance notice a player can provide when requesting a number change, the less chance there is of financial ramifications.”

– S Darnell Bing had an interception of a Walter pass and broke up a late throw from Russell.

– DT Warren Sapp and DE Derrick Burgess continue to sit out OTA sessions and Kiffin said he’s not sure if either man will be at voluntary minicamp June 11-13. Neither man has particpated in Oakland’s offseason weight program, but Kiffin said he’s not concerned because both players looked to be in good shape at the mandatory minicamp following the draft.

– WR Mike Williams continues to miss time with a hamstring pull sustained during the mandatory minicamp. Kiffin, who said the day of the injury said it wasn’t serious, apparently later discovered it was a serious pull and said Wednesday the lengthy absence has been no surprise.
– FB Zack Crockett was in Florida running a football camp for underprivledged youths. RB Dominic Rhodes had a personal issue and will return Thursday, Kiffin said. RB ReShard Lee had arthroscopic knee surgery and missed practice.

– No sign of PK Sebastian Janikowski or P Shane Lechler, and nobody seems to mind.

“They’ve not been here in the past and we’re really not concerned with it,” Kiffin said. “They come out here and kick for five minutes and stand around the rest of the day. They’re working on their golf game.”

  1. Raider Maori Says:

Not good signs for the offensive line! At least we’ll have a QB who can at least try to evade the rush though. The pressure will be on the running game to keep defenses honest.

  2. Raider_till_I_Die Says:

    Thanks for the update Jerry!

  3. Jim Says:

Where the hell is Jerry Porter going to buy a vacation home for $210,000?
I guess he has no math skeels.

  4. Snoop Says:

Looks as though the O-Line is struggling. I think we’ll get a clearer picture of whats going on come Training Camp. I wonder if they shouldnt try inserting Kevin Boothe into the lineup somewhere. The guy is a pretty big individual, and he did do better than most last season in the line. He was the most consistent. -Lamont Jordan is catching the ball. This is good news. I hope that Jordan has a good season ahead. Oakland really needs the guy to come through and begin to start earning his money. -Darnell Bing has been making plays that is good news -Whats up with Mike Williams. The guy has been down for quite a while now. Good thing we signed Travis Taylor. We’ll see what Williams does in Training Camp. Hopefully the guy can give a good showing and help Coach Kiffins gamble in him pay off!!!!!
Thanx Jerry McDonald, always bringing very indepth, good Raider information.

  5. Dragonrider Says:

In Mississippi, close to where Clinton Portis grew up lol, raise pups. For 210,000 he can build a big white house and have a couple of black buildings out back.

  6. RDR NATN Says:

Great analysis, Jerry. Thanks. I look forward to every one of your postings. This latest one was typically excellent. My two concerns with Raiders training (I’m sure they are the same for most of us Raiders fans) is the O-line and the QB situation. If I were Kiffin, my focus would be there. It’d be great if you could elicit a quote out of him that says that publically, or at least where he stands on those….

  7. I hate the Chargers, Broncos & Chiefs Says:

    GREAT ARTICLE JERRY!!! NICE JOB…

PS. MY RUSSEL #2 JERSEY JUST ARRIVED!!! WOOHOO…I’LL BE WEARING IT
IN SAN DIEGO WHEN THE RAIDERS COME TO PLAY

  8. Po Jonz Says:

Any and all offensivelines would and will struggle against our defense.Kevin Booth shouldstarrt at guard.Good to hear Bing making plays at safety. Its no surprise to me that Porter is the best offensive player thus far.He has been our best offensive player for years.Stevie Wonder could see that.I have no problem with Mario Henderson starting ahead of Gallery or Sims.Just play the best player no matter whats there name, where they were drafted or how much money they make or what school they went to. JUST WIN BABY

  9. Jeff Says:

Jerry will go in on a nice condo in Mexico!

Boothe… is he TOO big? New Warriors blocking schemes stress agility over sheer mass.

  10. KoolKell Says:

I hope the coaching is as good as advertised! Sounds like Mike Williams is stalling. I’ve never been impresed with Jake Grove at any time in his Raider career. Gallery still at LG?, I can’t see that. Dampening news Jerry.

  11. dan Says:

Not encouraging about oline given Sapp and Burg aren’t even there. Maybe Brayton gets all that PT because he looks so good in practice vs our oline. I have hopes for Gallery, but really, he must stink if he can’t beat out Simms. I was praying it was just the inconsistent coaching/scheme.

  12. Dick V Says:

Sounds like we needed to make a few more moves on the offensive line in the offseason: Jordan Black, Luke Petigout, and few others were available for a discount, why could’t we make a run at them. I think both men went to teams that run west coast offenses: Houston and tampa respectively, so you can’t say they would not have fit the system.

Gallery is a bust. He reminds me of a family member that keeps making mistakes that everybody keeps making up excuses for. He is a weenie, and he needs to man up and hit somebody: cut that damn hair while your at it. My only hope is that Grove can be salvaged. Especially with Ryan Kalil and Samson satele being drafted 59, and 60 at the bottom of round 2. We could have traded into the bottom of round two to one of those guys easily: that would have better than drafting Mario Henderson in round three.

  13. White Pride Says:

What a surprise that the O line is struggling. I never saw that one coming. What if Kiffins offense gives up 70 sacks too? I hope that by the time opening day rolls around that these guys can gel. It can’t be easy to have 4 different systems and coaches in 4 years.

  14. oakland fan Says:

we’re probably going to have to pick up some more offensive linemen before training camp, or after cut down day.

  15. J-rOcK21884 Says:

oh man oh man all this is happining with sapp and burgess out just think what will hapeen whhen they come but this should make them better and they are still trying to fingd the right combination when mcQustian was at left guard this waseent happeng so gallery should stay at one of the tackle spots he was doing better

  16. RAIDER TILL ETERNITY Says:

this is the line that i’m thinking would be good for the raiders…
first of all put gallery at RT were he belongs and played his best
whatever happend to boothe he was our best o-line last year so wats up, put him at RG
newberry should be playing c he’s a beast when healthy
LG should go to carlisle and LT should either go to mcQuistan or sims whoever wants it the most
    so like this
LT Sims/McQuistan LG Carlisle C Newberry/grove RG Boothe RT gallery
    Yadidimeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

  17. Huff24 Says:

Kiffin probably asked Sapp and Burgess to stay home because he didn’t want to embarass the offensive line anymore than they are already. If we don’t fix the offensive line, we’re doomed.

  18. Black Power Says:

I like Kiffin’s attitude. It’s too early to panic. Work the line, work the line, work the line.

  19. Dski Says:

Raider Till Eternity, I like your O-line projection.

  20. canuckraider Says:

    Thanks Jerry,
Any word on Newberry? Man I hope the line gets it together.

  21. 1960AutumWind Says:

    Huff24

Hey wait a minute wernt you the one telling me the line would be fine just two days ago!?

When I heard they were experimenting with Gallery at G and we were going to trot Sims out one more time as a “fixture” at LT (is he the worst in the league at that position? Maybe! At least during games anways) I knew we were in trouble. I hope there are some interesting June 1st cuts or Henderson develops fast!

    1960AW

  22. Big Daddy WooWoo Says:

    Jerry Porter,

Before you go moaning about the $210,000 cost, I’d check something out with your tax dude.

You could buy the jerseys and DONATE them to some charity organization. I’m sure there’s folks in some third world nation that would love a Raider’s #84 jersey…

Then you could have a tax writeoff, wear #81 and get a new car….(and some courtesy tickets for Big Daddy for the head’s up idea?)

  23. Mykle Van Hausen Says:

    FOR SHAME RAIDER NATION!

Not one mention of the great TimBrown?

F*ck Porters $200k, the number should be retired.

By the way, Nice job of steppin’ up Jerry!

    Nice arts!

  24. Sirbliztalot Says:

Gallery is a freakn bust. You cant coach speed or reflexes. The college acolades do not carry over to the pros. Sims is an overpaid bum, Gallery is a way overpaid bum, Grove is … at least he is not pathetic. The jury is still out on the right side of our line. Why didn’t we address that o-line in the draft or FA? Crap, it is a safe bet to say it is going to be another long year.

  25. La Milicia Negra Says:

Burgess and Sapp has no need to be in camp, they are in good shape, and when mandatory camps is comming they’ll be there for sure.

  26. IRS Says:

Big Daddy WW - Charitable contributions are reported on line 19 Schedule A Itemized Deductions. The $210,000 amount (deductable from AGI to get TI) would be reduced because Mr. Porter’s income is so high.

    $2 mil salary - reduced to $173,000
    $4 mil salary - reduced to $133,000

Since Mr. Porter is clearly in the 35% bracket, this results in tax savings of about $60,000 for the $2 mil case and $46,000 for the $4 mil case. He would have to assess the tradeoff of $210,000 cash for the favorable publicity that might result. In terms of cash flow, he is giving up $210,000 to get back far less.

The $210,000 is the FMV of the jerseys at present, but this might be reduced if he were to change from #84 to #81 immediately after the donation. And don’t forget to file Form 8283 along with the return. Hope this helps.

  27. Al Davis Says:

The greatness of the Raiders is in its future.

  28. RAIDAHSfanindonkeycountry Says:

C’mon guys, don’t throw in the towell this early, give Kiff and Cable a chance to teach this scheme. It’s still way early!

  29. NewEngland Raider Says:

Great article, i really enjoy the practice insight. O-line is a constant worry. I thought newby would start, maybe his knees really are shot? Who else is out there we can pick up? Mario is too raw to start….

  30. Napoleon Dynamite Says:

Someone needs to give Gallery and Grove nunchucks and cage fighting skills. Idiots, Gosh! I could block and I only weight 90 lbs. That’s because I have super sweet ninjitsu skills and I’m a level IV wizard.

  31. Pedro Says:

Or they can move Gallery back to tackle, or somethiiiiing…

  32. RaiderNerd Says:

Sounds like Kiffin is soft - letting Sapp work out on his own in Florida? Who the *&^$% does he think he is? I just hope Kiffin can wise up and banish Sapp for the season, maybe put him in street clothes and try to suspend him for 2 to 4 games. That would really show the team he is in charge, and they would no doubt respect him and respond with great effort.

    JUST KIDDING!

Don’t sweat the O-line folks, it’s only June, and Cable is sorting out what works and what doesn’t. They’ll be adequate by September, and pretty good by the middle of the year, in time to protect the $60M man.

  33. frank wiley Says:

To all of us praying that the scheme is the answer to the o-line woes: let me burst your bubble. All pro schemes require that ono-on-one match-ups are won by the o-lineman or any scheme will be unproductive. The zone scheme is different only to the extent that the playside linemen scoop off double teams to try to get movement before releasing to get a scaping linebacker.Sometimes there will be two double teams to the play side with the same scooping action. Sooner or later- as the play progresses- though, all blocks become man on man. I’m hearing a lot about scheme but I’m not hearing much from the Coach about physicality , expolsion, and toughness. That’s the Raiders! Concerning pass protection: you have to recognize your responsibility. If the man over you comes, he’s yours; if he doesn’t, take your second read which is usually inside-out.If you see a twist the guy next to you and you switch, or you can zone protect the first man in your area.If you miss, hustle to the most dangerous man and hit his ass. It is still a man-on-man game. BTW, Jerry when you observe the passing game how much of it is 5-7 step drops looking downfield? I suspect there will be more of that than most think.

  34. TuckRule Says:

For the o-line optimists, where do you get the idea that the line will be fine? Regardless of scheme, guys still have to block people. And, if you watched the same group I did, they don’t do that very well.

  35. I dress in black Says:

Heres a thought. How about we trade Jordan to the Steelers for Faneca, who wants out. They need a RB we need an all pro line men. Although he is now catching the ball, I have really no faith in him. We would do allot better with a stud line man blocking for Rhodes, Bush and company and a #1 draft pick.

  36. Raider Nate 75 Says:

    Here’s my o-line projection:
    RT-Gallery
    RG-Boothe or McQuistan
    C-Newberry
    LG-Carlisle
    LT-Mario Henderson

False start Sims should not be a starter, I put Mario Henderson there, but I haven’t head of any progress reports on him, but he’s a beast. Gallery at RT is the best position for him. I’m
hoping that Newberry could teach Grove how to play Center.

  37. AZ Raider Says:

210k is 20% on a million dollar investment home plus closing costs. How does the go for math? if he goes half with someone, well I think you can figure it out.

This O-line is pretty scary right now, disheartening news. A lot of good posts here about needing to block your man regardless of the system we are running. The line is breaking down already and they aren’t even facing pro bowl talent with Sapp and Burgess out of the OTA’s I just hope they can toughen up and show up when the pads get put on. Does anybody know or have an opinion as to weather the OTA’s are ran at say 80% padless? lok at me trying to make excuses for these guys. Let’s face it 70 sacks are a possibility and we are not goign to see Jamarcus behind this line. I hope there are some good free agents availible next year. It’s going to be a bumpy ride. Seriously what si the deal with Boothe? will somebody write an article on that please!

  38. Dragonrider Says:

Don’t give up yet, same basic line, nix Walker only gave up 36 sacks in 2005 and our line only gave up 25 in 2004. Give them time to gel, plus OTAs are suppose to be void of contact, even though we all know that’s not the case. We will have a better idea once the pads are on.

  39. Dragonrider Says:

Plus with Cables sceme the O-line cuts back at the knees, don’t know if they want our O-line taking our defensive line down like that. Haven’t paid attention before so don’t know what kind of reports come out of denver or atlanta on their O-line progress using the same sceme during OTAs.

  40. BamaRaider Says:

Do you people read the whole article?
Kiff said he’s moving people around.
This gives everyone some time at different positions (you need to know what everyone is doing on every play) and like Kiff said, it’s competition.
Granted Simms sims and gallery looked horrible last year, but the line was not setup to stop guys blitzing from the outside.

As far as them looking so bad in OTA, the defense is ALWAYS ahead of the offense at this time of the season, and to that the disparity in the O and D (AWSOME defense and reshuffling offense), it’s going to look ugly.

The positive of that is the learning curve should be pretty steep.

    Don’t worry just yet.

    -BamaRaider

PS: I don’t think 70 sacks is possible this year. Won’t happen.

  41. trurdrfan Says:

Have a little faith guys, its not like we have a game tommorow, its not event training camp and you guys are already pi****** ur pants. Right now they are just seeing who is best in each position. You talk about guys like Jordan Black, he is best atleast as a backup, why would u want to pay him all that money? And we did address the o-line. Tom Cable knows what he is doing, u think he cares what u think? He knows more football than all of you combined. You guys play to much Madden.

  42. AZ Raider Says:

I dont play Madden but you do have a point, there are good points and bad points and thay are all suspect when talking about the OL time will tell.

  43. JP Says:

It’s going to take a while to rebuild the O-line. I was a bit surprised they took only baby steps with rehabs and rejects in the offseason instead of the draft but obviously Kid Kiff felt priority needs were elsewhere. It’s going to be a year of pain again with the O-line but hopefully a guy like McCown will take the punishment instead of our #1 pick. As long as we establish a quick hitting short passing game and our guys can run around the pursuit (a stretch I know), we should be Ok as far as putting some points up. It’s not going to be an easy season though as far as scraping up wins with the garbage blocking.

  44. M.I.A. Raider Says:

    Good Day Raider Faithful!

What worries me is not so much the blocking at the present moment because I do believe that right now we are experimenting with personnel and have yet to determine the best 5 at the pertinent positions on the O-Line.

What worries me is that Mcown is “light years ahead” of JRock in making plays on the run when the protection breaks down. Doesnt Russell excel in those situations and isnt this part of the “natural ability” that helped us select him over his intangibles??

Hopefully his natural abilities will shine in those situations soon and here is hoping that we find the right 5 guys at their O-Line Positions even sooner!!

BTW..Thanks for the input on finding Raider fans here locally in Miami so I can meet with them when the Raiders come to my hometown and stomp on the Dolphins!!

  45. J Says:

It should be no surprise that the O-line still stinks. It’s basically the same yahoo’s as last year. Why the draft ignored this glaring weakness is beyond me. A new coach, a late draft pick and a castoff from the Donkeys is all that has changed. Hopefully they’ll be less horrible than last year.

  46. KoolKell Says:

Pads are not allowed during the OTA’s:

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/05/31/SPGIRQ47KI1.DTL

  47. frank wiley Says:

When this much experimentation is being done it means that few have distinquished themselves. Established players don’t get switched around. Let’s get real: Carlisle is a player Denver did even make an offer to retain. Why? They concluded he couldn’t play. Has anyone heard from Newberry. He’s a huge question mark. Teams don’t let quality left tackles go because they are so hard to find.Several teams let Cornel Green go. What does that tell you ?Moving Mcquistan to tackle is a good move. He has a long angular frame more suited to tackle than to guard. Barry Sims is a loyal raider. But he seemed to be unable to handle quick pass rushers two years ago. Do you think he has gotten better? We all hold out hope for Robert Gallery because he is so athletically talented. But believe me, he would not be at guard if the thought he could be a left tackle. I’m very interrested in seeing Kevin Boothe and Mario Henderson. Henderson becomes super important because the Raiders don’t have a single left tackle. I think Chad Slaughter can be a destroyer at right tackle. But Mcquistan was a high draft choice so he will get the nod there unless he fall on his face completely. We may find that Shell wasn’t as bad as some of you think. It’s easy to blame the Coach when things go wrong. what about the players? Can they play or not? No excuses.

  48. Dragonrider Says:

No sh!t Klueless, neither is contact, I said we will know more about how the O-line is functioning once the pads are on (preseason activities for Klueless Idiots).

  49. KoolKell Says:

    You little twit, lol

  50. JP Says:

with all due respect Frank, McQuistan is a lardass farmboy that has never been in shape since the womb. He is not NFL caliber and he certainly does not have a long angular frame.

  51. MTC 693 Says:

First off Grove is not even practicing at Guard so get that out of your mind. Chris Morris is is .
is playing at center and guard in the mix. You have Morris and Boothe who are capable off moving the line if given the chance to do so. Let’s see how open minded these coaches
are! Morris is quick and agile not to mention very intelligent have been watching him
for the last 5 years at MSU.

  52. EasTcoastRaider Says:

Just shows you where Porter’s mind is–the Money.
I understand that is a nice chunk of change, but I like how all that talk about how it was going to be a great honor to wear 81 because of Timmy Brown went away when it actually might cost him something.

I have concerns how Porter will act when something goes wrong which we all know it will.

  53. Moe From the OC Says:

I like your view on things Frank!!

  54. Huff24 Says:

    Profootballtalk.com
RAIDERS WERE WILLING TO WORK WITH PORTER
A league source tells us that the Oakland Raiders were willing to work with receiver Jerry Porter to come up with a strategy for dealing with the backlog of No. 84 jerseys that would have arisen if Porter had been permitted to change his number to 81. Per the source, the team offered up ideas such as having Porter autograph some of the jerseys for donation to charity, and selling some of them at a reduced rate. The source said that the team never took the position that Porter had to pay anything in order to effect the change. In fact, it would have been far easier for the team to simply tell Porter that it wasn’t inclined to re-issue the number that had been last worn by Tim Brown. But we’re told that the team had no problem with giving the number to Porter, and that Brown had agreed to the move. The insurmountable hurdle, the source says, was the $130,000 that was due and payable to Reebok, which manufactured the jerseys. Apparently, the league’s contract with Reebok contains specific language regarding the issue of number changes, and there were no meaningful discussions (as far as we can tell) between Reebok and Porter regarding an alternative solution. Given those facts, then, it’s not accurate to assume that the team’s position is evidence that the Raiders don’t want Porter to be on the team.

  55. trurdrfan Says:

Dont know if M. Henderson would start this year, maybe the next. But anything is better than Sims cause he has lost a step or 2, so i wouldnt be surprise if he does start. Best bet at that side is C. Green, cause of his experience in zone blocking.

  56. 1960AutumWind Says:

    Line is not ok….

My prognosis about the line is not based on McDonalds report that there is big time containment problems in OTAs it is based on 2005 performance and also 2004 performance. Number of sacks is not the only parameter there are other issues such as hurries and knockdowns. They did not get the nickname turnstiles for nothing. Simms starting and being a fixture while we experiment with Gallery tells me Gallery has issues because Simms is what he is an ok backup that is appropriate to use like we used Badger (nothing more and definitely not a starting LT). I pin my hopes on Cable’s opinion that we had a lot of talent on the line and I am hoping they are experimenting and giving Gallery some experience before placing him at RT or LT otherwise he is certainly a bust. If a #2 pick can not beat out an udrafted journeyman lineman that would probably not start at LT for any other team, we got serious issues! Having a project player like McQuinstan at RT also scares me most thought we reached for him in the third round last year and I do not think he is a good fit in a cut - stretch blocking scheme. It kind of indicates desperation. Like I said June 1st cuts or I hope Henderson develops fast! At least McCown can out run most lineman and linebackers.

  57. JoeJoe Says:

I actually like the fact that there finally seems to be some truth being spoken in the Raider OTAs. I am not yet ready to panic about the O line yet. First, new system, new coaches new folks on the right side, Second, a defense that is true NFL caliber playing against that line, and third, we don’t know where or why the breakdowns are occurring. Last year, not only was there a switch to man blocking, but I never saw a back or TE blocking or even chipping. There is absolutely no way that our O line will be as bad as last year. It may not be as good as we want, but it will go in the right direction. As far as Gallery goes, I watched O Pace stink for his first 2 or 3 years.
I always thought we got a steal with McCown. I do believe that the staff knows what it is doing when it comes to drafting.
GL to all raider fans out there, and hopes for a decent season. NO playoffs this year though, just improvement.

  58. Paul Says:

Don’t give up on the O-Line NATION!!

  59. JP Says:

An astute analysis 1960autumnwind. I’m wondering how the QB competition will shape up. Even if Walter has improved, I’d feel better having McCown to start the season and get things going. He has shown more than Walter in the regular season. Walter does not have good speed or escapability. Walter’s entire reputation was built on a nifty pass made in pre-season 2 years ago but as his injuries have shown, he needs to get rid of the ball earlier.

  60. 1960AutumWind Says:

    JP

I don’t think things are looking good for Walter. He was drafted to be a pocket passer someone that would fit well in the current offense the Rams are using or the offense the KC used to use and is transitioning out of. Kiffen wants an offense that fits more what someone like Jeff Garcia would like. Moving pockets, naked bootlegs busted plays and scrables with dump offs to FBs and TEs. McCown is a good fit for an offense like this (Vince Young would love this offense!). I think the offense will adapt and become more pocket oriented as the line gets better (i.e. probably next year) to help Russell but this year it has to be mobile because of the protection issues that we had last year and I think will have this year. McCown is a way better fit. Walter’s chance is if McCown gets injured but if that is late in the season even then Russell may be ready. I feel like Walter is going to be “Tuied” if you will. Drafted for a certain type of system and really not suited to another but because he has a cheap rookie contract will be retained as a backup until his contract expires. Of course I am just guessing and speculating because I have not seen him since “he has improved.” I do remember him in preseason and I was not impressed in 2005. I don’t even count last year because of the BB effect even Joe Montana would have looked bad.

Last year really set us back on offense because the schemes were so bad I am sure the new coaches are not sure what we have at this point. I think that is why they decided not to go after the OL so quickly essentially testing the existing talent first before jettisioning it so they do not needlessly loose good talent. One thing is for sure the coaching staff did not like the production of the TE and FB because that is what they targeted in FA and the Draft. Also getting not only Russel and McCown I think sends a message regarding what they think of Walter’s abilities but I think Walter is a competitor and he will take Kiffin at his word and fight for the starting spot and try to show them that they were wrong.

  61. Tater Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t these guys practicing in shorts? How much can you really evaluate “in shorts”? As someone else said earlier, the D is always ahead of the O to begin with, and it may never change on this team. We have a pretty good D that hasn’t had to change schemes or coaches like the O has. Let’s give it a little time to gel.

  62. Coach on Wheels Says:

LESS THAN A WEEK - That’s how many practices this O-line has had together. This would be Gallery’s what 3rd day of practice at guard? All those days off between OTA’s and mandatory mini-camp don’t count. I’ll let the guys start to learn the new system before I panic. Going from a man to zone pass protection scheme is going to take a little more time to learn than telling a DE, “Mongo, go kill QB.”

UFL SHOULD TRY TO DEVELOP INTO A RELEGATION LEAGUE
A couple of readers have pointed out a concept to us that we think could end up having direct application, eventually, to the new pro football league that plans to launch as early as 2008. It’s highly unlikely that the UFL, which intends to compete with the NFL without trying to pay the same level of player wages, could ever trigger a true merger with the premier sports league in the United States. The AFL, which pulled it off nearly 40 years ago, was the right idea in the right place at the right time. Born on the heels of the epic 1958 NFL Championship game, which made pro football a living-room fixture throughout the nation, the AFL offered sizzle as a contrast to what could be, at times, a snore-fest. The AFL also targeted (and paid) high-level college players, like Joe Namath. The UFL doesn’t aspire to provide the same degree of football quality, focusing instead on getting the best guys from the back end of an NFL’s teams roster, and possibly luring some of the players selected in rounds two or lower of the NFL draft. So how can this new league, which will start with eight teams and presumably aspire to grow, ever make itself into something that the NFL might eventually choose to embrace? By merging without actually merging. It’s the relegation concept, used in soccer leagues throughout the world. NFL teams that can’t compete on a consistent basis would be sent down a level; UFL teams that take on elite status would get an invitation to join the NFL. Oh, and given that the NFL currently is plotting to attempt to become the dominant sports league in the world, the use of a tool with which many citizens of the planet already are familiar could help to forge the emotional connection necessary to draw billions of new fans. And it would become a hugely compelling facet of NFL football. No longer would teams at the bottom of the league be jockeying for the “right” to pay $30 million or more in guaranteed money to the top incoming rookie; the stakes would be much higher. The worst team each season would be in danger of getting booted from the NFL, and then forced to play its way back in. (Here’s a recent article on the concept that we found in the Milford (Mass.) Daily News.) Such an approach would make the NFL the ultimate meritocracy, with winning on a consistent basis more important than ever. Each NFL game would have even more meaning, because the late-season salve of “wait ’til next year” would be replaced with the possibility that, at some point, there might not be a next year. At least not in the NFL. Is such an arrangement likely? Probably not. Do we think it’s an idea that should be fully explored? Abso-frickin’-lutely. The problem is that the 32 members of the Billionaire Boys Club currently have no incentive to ponder the notion of creating a minor league into which any of them could eventually be banished. But if the UFL succeeds, it could force the NFL to devise a strategy bringing the two leagues together. And we think that the UFL will succeed only if it understands and accepts its place on a tier beneath the NFL. So if the UFL stays on a lower rung and becomes a force that the NFL can’t ignore, the relegation concept will be, we predict, the natural solution. Are there plenty of other details that would need to be ironed out? Sure. But given that soccer leagues have been using the approach for years tells us that the wise men (and women) who run the NFL would be able to make it happen, if they ever choose to do so. At some point, the UFL could force them to make that choice.

  65. 1960AutumWind Says:

To everyone saying we can not judge anything by OTAs. Once again, I am not judging because people came pouring in on the QBs, I am judging some things by who they are projecting. For instance, if they were constantly lining up Witsend as #1 WR and relegated Curry and Porter to 2nd or 3rd string I am sure you would be concerned about what is going on with the WRs. Here we have a 2nd overall pick at LT being experimented with as a G and you have a journeyman lineman that probably would not start on most teams projected at LT? It is saying something about where our talent is unless they are truely giving Gallery the Magical Mystery tour before they place him at one of the tackles.

Simms being moved back to LT really bothers me becuase frankly he sucked in 2004 and 2005 at that position! Since he is a veteran I don’t think he is going to get better with coaching like some of the younger talent might.

  66. mac Says:

Dam fine posting 1960 autumwind, nice to see people actually posting rather than

    the mouse.

  67. NorthernRaider Says:

Screw that regulation crap idea. The NFL is the greatest sports league in the world, so why pander to the soccer fans of the world? That UFL, like it’s last couple of predecessors, will likely manage to hang around for a few years, then fade into oblivion. If it even manages to get up and running. The on-field product of the NFL is awesome, and doesn’t need to be meddled with. The league’s main problem is the same one shared with baseball and basketball, ie: ridiculously inflated salaries! Something’s really wrong when has-beens and never-beens are commanding multi-million dollar bonuses and salaries, and players are constantly reneging on written contracts and holding out for more green paper! This culture of greed is the main issue that needs to be addressed!
There, that feels better! Have a great day Nation!

  68. EasTcoastRaider Says:

It’s funny that any QB we haven’t seen yet is always the most popular one. Walter didn’t look good last year because the O-line was terrible, and he had nobody to throw to other than Curry late in the year. Given the same O-line struggles this year McCown or Russell will look terrible too. I don’t think that will happen though.

My guess is McCown early and if he wins then they will stick with him until they fall out of playoff contention and then go w/ young Russell. Russell needs to get in as soon as he can.

  69. Huff24 Says:

If the offensive line is really bad then you should not even think about putting JR in the game at all during this year. We need to let a veteran like McCown work through the struggles while we figure everything out. McCown needs to show the league that he has something so he can get a contract next year and lets face it, our offensive line is not going to be perfect this year so its important to ride out the storm and save JR from the punishment. It will pay dividends in the end to allow JR to sit and learn and for us to find the weak links on our offensive line. Once we find those weaknesses, we will be better prepared to fix the problem next year and JR will be good as ready and be far more protected. This will benefit the coaching staff, McCown, the offensive line and JR. This is not a Superbowl year by any means….don’t risk the future. I normally agree that starting a rookie QB out of the gates can be a good thing so he can learn the game quicker but I have a feeling that this offensive line will cause a negative effect on JR and it will not elevate him but lower his confidence instead. McCown deserves the chance to start and JR deserves the chance to learn. Let the games begin.

  70. EasTcoastRaider Says:

There is no excuse for us NOT to have an adequate Offensive line. If we don’t have the players, and we will find that out soon enough then bring some in. We got Newberry, we got Carlisle, and we got the leftovers from last years problem childs. Now lets make an assesment and if we need to make changes then lets make them. The time is now not 2 to 3 years BS! JR is a leader and if we put him in he can elavate players to new levels, hell he may even motivate Porter to a new level. You don’t pay for players like Dominic Rhodes and then put people on the shelf for later! Tenn. last year put Young in and he looked awful early and then they were arguably one of the best teams down the stretch. I trust Kif will put the best guy in and that’s all you can ask. I know this isn’t SB year but we do want to see improvement, and the bad thing w/ McCown doing well is it will delay JR getting in there and then you got a QB controversy. There shouldn’t even be one, you are just asking for trouble and then before you know it JR is 3 years on the bench! I never Ever understand drafting someone that high and sitting him on the bench unless he just isn’t grasping the offense. GET HIM IN THERE!

  71. 1960AutumWind Says:

    East Coast

Your post illustrates a point of view I just can not disagree with more. First many people way overestimate JR’s ability to come in and start. JR only started something like 25 games in College and only emerged as a top tier QB in the last half of 2006. There were questions if he was even going to start for LSU last year! LSU’s line was awesome and the wide receivers were I think all first day picks so he had an offense around him way better than the competition. His only experience with defenses that had the athleticism to match his offense were teams like Florida and those games were ugly for JR! There are times when it is appropriate to start a rookie QB, this is not one of those times. Junior QB’s more often than not really struggle their first year. Put an offensive line learning a new system on top of that you have the recipe for a really bad year rivaling the Bread and Breakfast attack. With a young offensive line that is developing, at least have a veteran QB that is used to playing behind bad lines that is mobile. That is McCown. Pat Kirwan before the draft said that we would get McCown AND draft JR based on insider information. He was right. The coaches obviously feel that JR needs time and have wisely got a veteran to prove himself while helping break in the new QB and new system. This is one of the reason I think Kiffin is the real deal. That was a really smart move.

Frankly, I did not even think JR was worth the first pick because of the bust potential and hoped we would be able to trade out but all the so called offers that we were hearing about were smoke screens. For that I was called a racist, raider hater etc… What is weird is the people I wanted to draft also happened to have dark skin as well. However, he is our first pick he has sky high potential if he is developed right but gezz the man has not even played in a pro set yet! They played the spread and JR took most snaps in shotgun formation.

Finally the idea that we can just go out and obtain an offensive line in this FA market and draft is not reality. Langston Walker who sucks in my opinion got a huge offer from Buffalo. One mediocre lineman the first week got almost a 50 million contract. We would have broken the bank/cap to get good lineman in that climate. We were lucky to get Carlisle and some others for depth at bargain prices. Regarding the draft, we used our big pick on JR. For our second we had glaring need at TE that was met. In the third most lineman that could come in and start were off the board, so we picked a project and went another direction with the other two picks at positions where better athletes were available.

Honestly we have to hope that all that talent Gallery was supposed to have will emerge in this new system and he beats out Simms and becomes an above average left tackle. Simms has played as well as possible and is just not a starting caliber LT no matter what the system and is getting old and on the decline. Early indications are that Gallery is not emerging as hoped but like many of said “the pads are not on yet.” Henderson can also emerge by the end of the preseason as a starter and one of the holdovers like Boothe could emerge. I think Carlisle is our only true guard we have which is a little strange regarding FA and draft but Grove and Morris probably can be fairly good there even though they are centers. I think the coaches have made a calculation that they want to take the time and find out what kind of talent we have before we start jettisoning talent because your really can not tell from the disaster that was last years offense.

  72. EasTcoastRaider Says:

    AutumWind,

I pretty much understand what you are saying and actually mostly agree with it. What I was trying to say, but may not have explained well enough is that IF we have a decent line and Russell does grasp the system then no sense sitting him on the bench.
Those are two big IF’s. I would compare our pick–Russell– to a new car model. I mean Cleveland went w/ the Toyota or Honda, and we went with some new car company. When you look at JR you see a linebacker’s body or even a DE. If he turns out to be great he will be breaking a mold, similar to Culpepper and McNabb without the running ability. There certainly is a risk involved w/ any pick but I agree the downside w/ ours is huge. I guess I’m just anxious to see what we have.

  73. Huff24 Says:

I guarentee McCown would be better than JR coming out of the gates. Its extremely possible that JR has a better career over the long haul due to potential but I would have felt just as comfortable with drafting Calvin Johnson and trading for McCown but it seems that the only way we were going to get McCown is if we drafted JR because the Lions wanted Calvin. McCown fits this system perfect and even better than JR but don’t think for one minute that if McCown has a great year that he will stay with the Raiders. The coaching staff and McCown both understand that this is his only year with the team. PERIOD. If McCown made the pro bowl this year, he would still move on. We signed JR with the intention of him being our future so we’re not going to be sitting him for 2 or 3 years. Thats why its important that JR sits for his one and only year. He needs development. What really makes me sad is that some of you don’t want to see McCown do well so you can see JR as our QB. You’re an idiot if thats what you want to happen because you obviously don’t want to win. Everyone should be happy that we have a veteran QB who can come in here and be effective and take the pressure off of our future QB. You shouldn’t be sitting there waiting to pull the plug on McCown because if he doesn’t do well, I seriously think JR won’t do any better. We want McCown to be effective because it shows promise in the system, it shows promise in the coaching staff and its sets a standard for JR that he will have to live up to. This reminds me of when Jon Kitna took over for the Bengals with Carson Palmer as the backup. They let Kitna lead the team to an 8-8 season before putting Palmer in the next year and he was more experience than JR. Kiffin has made some genious decisions so you have to let him play this out perfectly, otherwise we will be searching for another Head Coach.

  74. 1960AutumWind Says:

    Huff

I could not agree more… The only way I want to see JR this year is if he really gets the offense late in the year and it becomes obvious or if McCown is injured. I want to see McCown succeed and then the coaches will modify the playbook somewhat to accomodate the “new car that we will have in JR next year. The new car though needs to be tested and vetted before it is released because a car recall is very expensive! Both are really good posts. I think Cleveland got a ford Escort rather than a Toyota because Toyotas are really good cars and I do not think Quinn is a lock to be really good QB. I think JR is a lot like a cool Hybrid lots of potential can take you places on a tank no one else can but not totally proven yet. LOL

The sissified Raiders O-line allowed 72 sacks in ‘06. Let’s better that number in ‘07, silver & crap.

  76. TrueRaider Says:

Guys i remember i said that Simms, Grove and Gallery are the worst starting OL in the league and all i heard from you guys was that Art Shell and the coaching staff were responsible for our poor lineman. Guys we had the worst line for the past 3 yrs and we led the league with penalities cuz our guys are scared to push. Cut block ain’t gonna work with Simms, Grove and Gallery, they should be benched and cut. Soon some players will get cut and we can pick up some underrated linemen maybe change of scenary might do them good otherwise start the rookies and second yr lineman in place of these three bust lineman. We should sign McCown to a long term contract, i believe he will be the new young version of Garcia. JR needs maybe 2 yrs to learn the NFL scheme and our lineman won’t help him to throw 60 yards bomb so until we get or draft good OL JR should be at the bench instead of letting him run around and get injured just like Culpepper.

  77. Brien Says:

Wow charger fans can talk. You cheated to win a crucial game against the inept Raiders but still choked in grand fashion at home in the playoffs only to cry about opposing players dancing on your emblem. You fire Chokenhiemer and lose both coordinators only to have Norvell Turner as your head coach. It wont be that sunny in San diego this season. I’m a classy guy?LOL

  78. JP Says:

I’m just glad McCown is a Raider right now. Not that he has accomplished a lot as a pro but he is an experienced veteran that we absolutely need heading into the season. Walter might surprise and turn things around but that’s a risk I’m glad the organization did not leave to chance. Putting a rookie in to start would be irresponsible at this point. Too many other things to get straightened out first.

I thank the gods we did not grab David Carr and got McCown instead.

  79. Huff24 Says:

I agree that McCown is a good option right now. I wanted to get him last year but I can understand why he didn’t accept to join the Raiders last year based on the coaching staff. I think McCown can be a good QB in this league, he just started off on a bad team but he did exceptionally well despite that. I would not have a problem looking to McCown as our future at QB but things went in another direction with the draft. I guess we will truly know what to think of McCown when he starts playing. We will either love him or we will hate him but some will never love him because JR sits in the wings and that will cause some fans to become impatient. People just need to understand that 06 is McCowns year and the rest is JR’s.

  80. White Pride Says:

The truth, twerpphaggot, is that the Chargers have the most talent in the NFL and still can’t make it to the big show. 81. Raider From Birth Says:

    Have fun with Norvell, ladies.

  82. 1960AutumWind Says:

    TrueRaider

While I would agree that Simms Gallery and Grove is 2004 and 2005 was way below average I did not think they were the worst. Houston was really bad one of those years. I think our offense was about average to below average on total yards those years as welll. The Defense was not very good either. Also in 2004 Gallery and Grove were rookies and in 2005 Grove was hurt a lot if I remember right and Treu started a lot. Gallery I think was hurt and moved around. I am not convinced that the jury is closed on Gallery and Grove however I saw way too many plays were Simms was beat and the QB had to force something or throw it away that is why I am so concerned that Simms is projected as the starter this year. I think in 06 the long drops and complex patterns were really stupid to do with a stuggling line. I mean other teams could just tee off on us especially when we are trailing and with Jordan hurt. So I can really say in 06 it really was the coaching and the scheme. I mean we changed coordinators in the middle of the season! You can not really evaluate anything based on that mess except Curry was really good in spite of all that.

I am concerned at how injury prone Gallery and Grove are as well. Do we want to build a line on someone injured half the time? This is like what the defense was going through with Williams.

  83. KeeneRaider Says:

Does anyone know why the new coaching staff hasnt inserted Boothe into a role with the first team offensive line? From everything ive read it sounds like he was our best offensive lineman last year….Maybe he doesnt fit Cables new system?

  84. Huff24 Says:

Boothe may have been good last year because he might have been a great power blocker whereas, this year is based on speed and cut blocks. Maybe Boothe has shown that he is too slow as a pulling guard? Shell drafted Boothe and McQuistan because of their nasty streaks but McQuistan is probably faster since he did play LT in college. Kiffin has made the QB competition fair, so I would assume that he will make the competition fair for the offensive line as well. Boothe should get his opportunity. I’m thinking we should keep Sims at LG and Gallery at LT. The only way Gallery is going to prove he is a true LT is to give him the opportunity in the current system. Sims didn’t play that bad as a LG but when he got hurt, Shell decided to keep him out and put McQuistan in.
    LT - Gallery, Henderson
    LG - Sims, McQuistan
    C - Grove, Newberry, Morris
    RG - Carlisle, Boothe
    RT - Green, Slaughter
I think keeping 11 offensive lineman could be good because we may not find out whos the best fit by the start of the season and this gives us plenty of depth. Gallery, Henderson, Sims, McQuistan, Green and Slaughter can all play tackle. Sims, McQuistan, Grove, Moris, Carlisle and Boothe can all play guard while Grove, Newberry and Morris can play center. These guys gives us alot of depth at each position and can be a huge benefit. The front guys don’t necessarily have to start but these are at least the guys we should keep.

  85. EasTcoastRaider Says:

I understand wanting to win and having McCown is a step in that direction. But let me ask you this: How much experience does JR get by sitting on the bench? He may not be ready and in that case he shouldn’t start, but look at V. Young from the Titans. A lot of people said he wasn’t ready either, and that he wasn’t grasping the system. So what–then you simplify the system, because in JR you have the most talented QB in the league. He isn’t the best QB just has the strongest arm and LB’s will hit him and he will throw them off like flies. I am only saying we should start him if our OL is good enough and he has a decent grasp of the system.

Things like timing and interceptions should matter less. Look what good is it if we go 8-8 and win a few games and still miss the playoffs and JR still has no experience? How good and confident do you think he would feel having some momentum going into the following season if he progressed like Young did?

  86. Raider From Birth Says:

East Coast… I think the reason they’re doing things this way is because you want a rookie QB’s supporting cast to be ahead of him and a bit more seasoned in the new system when he takes over. Let’s face it, the best college defenses week in and week out are in the SEC, but it’s still not close to the NFL. A rookie QB is going to need guys around him that can help him out, and we have a totally new system for everyone to learn. We don’t even know yet who is going to play what position on the O-line. Roethlisberger had an ideal situation in Pittsburgh because he had veterans around him. The Cardinals suck, but they had been running the same offense for awhile and they still waited to play Leinart. Cincinnati waited a whole year for Carson Palmer. Same with San Diego and Rivers. Add to that the fact that Russell didn’t play in an NFL-style offense in college or have a lot of starts there, and the strategy does seem to make a lot of sense.

till we can fix this mess. Kiffin seems like just what we need. We are simply put the worst team in the NFL by kind of a lot. Our defense is not as good as people make it out to be. We need a bunch of things to go right over a few years to get back into contention. I’ll be there pulling for the Raiders all the way but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Even if you’ve too old to like videogames, check this out. Some of you know the highly anticipated “Halo 3″ is coming soon. The creators held a contest to have the fans (there are millions of them) create logos, the winner is to be put in the game as an option to assign to your character online.

The winning logo is obviously a Raiders shield, see link below. I know what I’m picking! It might look a little cheezy, but that’s because of the specific rules involved in creating the logos. Good job Raider Nation!
