Training camp, Day 6 (P.M.)

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, August 1st, 2007 at 10:03 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Sights and sounds, news and notes from Wednesday night’s training camp practice as relayed by Medianews Raiders beat writer Steve Corkran:

– LaMont Jordan, coming off a solid morning practice, sat out the evening session.

– Outside linebacker Thomas Howard missed the evening practice with an undisclosed ailment.

– Running back ReShard Lee was waived after he and the Raiders reached an injury settlement. Lee sustained a knee injury Tuesday.

– Tight end Tony Stewart switched to the No. 86 worn by tight end Randal Williams, an indication that Williams, who left the team Sunday, will not be back.

– Tackle Adrian Klemm, in camp on a tryout basis during the morning session, was signed to a contract. Klemm, 30 missed last season with an Achilles injury. He has appeared in 42 games since being drafted by New England in 2000.

– Chris Carr, Doug Gabriel and Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chris Johnson returned kickoffs in the first such drill in camp.

– The defense beat the offense in the linebackers vs. running backs blocking drill.

Highlights included Dominic Rhodes standing up Kirk Morrison and knocking him back before Morrison threw Rhodes to the ground. At that point, coach Lane Kiffin yelled, “Same two again.”

The ensuing matchup was a draw. However, after the series was tied at 6, Kiffin asked Rathman to throw out his best blocker and Martindale to produce his best linebacker.

Morrison triumphed in Rhodes vs. Morrison III to give the linebackers a 7-6 victory.

– Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp played quarterback in a one-on-one drill. Knapp completed several in a row, which prompted Martindale to yell, “There’s a reason he’s in coaching. Here comes the pick.”

Knapp promptly connected on an over-the-top pass to Rhodes for an 85-yard touchdown, with Rhodes beating linebacker Isaiah Kacyvenski.

– Alvis Whitted caught a deep pass from Andrew Walter, despite tight coverage from Stuart Schweigert.

– Josh McCown threw a lead block on cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on a run play in which Rhodes reversed his field and headed around the left end.

– Daunte Culpepper connected with Will Buchanon for a 47-yard touchdown on a well-thrown pass down the left sideline. Buchanon hauled in the long pass as defensive back Lavonne Rowan looked on.

Earlier, Culpepper delivered a 20-yard strike to Jerry Porter on a pass over the middle that drew oohs and aahs from teammates, with the force of the ball hitting Porter’s pads audible from the sideline.

You just gotta love this type of information. Just Win Baby!!

  2. Huff24 Says:

I wish I could watch these practices in person. I need a better job.

  3. chrisram73 Says:

Great job, as always! Keep up the AWESOME work Jerry!

  4. JB Says:

Great feedback & insight. Keep it coming. It’s never too early for MORE FOOTBALL!

Sounds as if Culpepper might have been a real steal - especially if he’s healthy & has something to prove to all the nay-sayers throughout the league. I personally would like to hear more about the O-line and how they are working out with the new coach & blocking scheme. It would appear that we have all the necessary pieces on offense assuming the O-line plays well. It’s all about the O-line. As they go, so will the 2007 season.

  5. Blackholepriest Says:

Thanks Jmac this is good stuff. It seems to me that Andrew is a much more accurate passer than McCown. And with a healthy Daunte “slinging the rock” this team is just that much more competitive. I definitely think he gives us the best QB in the division if he returns to form. and with that defense which will erase a lot of mistakes and give the O a short field in which to work there’re some good times ahead.

This in my mind puts us in contention for a wild card spot if the running game is formidable.

The competition in camp sounds very high and they’re getting a lot of work done. I can’t wait to get up there and see for myself.

  6. morgan moore Says:

What up with Jamarcus ? I hope he signs soon. matt leinart held out for two weeks and he played a lot last year. I had high hopes that he might play this year. However, id rather see us with culpepper than mccown. At least donte is proven. Hopefully J rock gets into camp, learns to ball from a proven veteran african american quarterback. This is good- Donte and Jamarcus……..If culpepper can return to form, then we could have one of the best quarterback situations in the league. If one gets injured or isnt performing, put in the other one. whoevers hot. cant wait till preseason and watch them all perform.

  7. Charger Says:

Best quarterback in the division? Hahahaha. In contention for a wild card spot? Hahahaha. No wonder you are the laughingstock of the league. You Raiders fans are a crack up. Try winning a division game first. lol

  8. F#@K the Chargers! Says:

Hey Charger, When was the last time you won a playoff game? I rather have a 2-14 record than be 14-2, an NFL best, and lose in the 1st round of the playoffs AGAIN.

  9. oakland fan Says:

hey Charger ! How many superbowl victories does your team have? hahahaha , u have 0!!!!!!!

  10. RF Says:

i’d love to watch in person, but i can strongly visualize everything. THanks for the updates! Sounds to me though, like walter is the inaccurate one. Culpepper will start. IMO.

  11. Dan Says:

    Thanks for the update.

I hope Will Buchanon makes the team he is having another good offseason.

  12. Shell's Hat Says:

I’m not one to disrespect Al’s aging, but my god he was hard to watch, today. I was embarrassed for him. His plea for an award ceremony in Bill Walsh’s honor on live television is a testament to just how cagey and isolated he’s become. There was once a time where Al could make a few phone calls and work out such a deal. Today, he’s obviously out of the loop.

I’ve always said that I like Davis as an owner, just not as a g.m. But after today, I dunno. Again, I do not mock Al’s aging. I’ll mock his management of the team all I like. But I will not mock someone for showing signs of aging that we will all suffer from someday..if we’re lucky enough to even get there. If a Republican wins in ‘08, most of us probably won’t. And what I say “us”, I mean the entire world.

That being said, it really might be time for Al to hang it up. To those of you who pledge your loyalty to him, how could you still have faith in him as the top guy in this organization after watching that today? You’d have to be in total denial to not see that his mental capacities are just not banging on all cylinders. Sure, he’s still got the data. But it’s just flying all over the place, like one of those spinning fireworks.

Notice when he was asked how he felt about never getting the Niners in the SB, he completely forgot what he was asked and went into basically and advertisement of the ’80s Raiders. He was getting years wrong. WAY wrong. Debartolo buying the niners in ‘67? Yes, that seems like a minor brain fart. But this is the person who makes the final decisions in this franchise. Wouldn’t you like to think he could remember which decades certain events took place? And, he hung on to that ‘67 number. He said it more than once. Debartolo bought the Niners in 1977.

It’s really getting close to retirement time, for Al. And, I mean for the whole 9. Hopefully he did retire from his owners’ box coaching for good when he hired Kiffin. But considering his obvious signs of mental aging, that may not be enough.

Long live Al. But we’ve got a football team to run, in an ever complexed and ever changing league.

  13. Shell's Hat Says:

And, BTW…combine Al’s signs of aging with our record over the past 4 years…And consider he started slipping after the ‘00 season when he stupidly stonewalled Gruden’s proposal for a new contract. You add it all up, and it doesn’t look pretty. And, I don’t think Kiffin’s going to be good enough to save the day. He may bring everything Gruden brought and then some, but then wouldn’t that make it all the more likely that he goes out the same way Gruden did? Afterall, if we win, he’ll be in demand and teams will be willing to pay him a lot more than Al would like to pay a coach. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. But, when we do, Al will be a few years beyond the mental state that he’s in today, which isn’t exactly as sharp as a knife. I’d hate to be this way, but it’s the honest to god truth.

  14. Blackholepriest Says:

Are you sure you know what your talking about. I think De Bartolo bought the team long B
DeBartolo went through some lean years B4 he hired Walsh in ‘78 on Big Al’s recommendation. I remember Joe Thomas running the team in the ground as the GM because both a Raider and 49er fan. Maybe your the one who needs to hang it up.

Maybe it wasn’t ‘67 but I know it wasn’t ‘77 and don’t you think one of the writers and many of them were around when Eddie D. bought the team would have corrected him and subsequently challenged his mental state. Not to mention John Herrera was right there for that very reason . I don’t see JMac writing anything of the such. So where are coming from?

  15. shell's hat ...you moron Says:

It’s God not god…you disrespectful imbecile. shell’s hat if you know so much more than Al Davis , how come we never saw you submitt an opinion piece for J Mac to post here on this blog???????????

  16. Blackholepriest Says:

I stand corrected it was ‘77 when DeBartolo bought the team. It’s been a long time for me too. I just remember going through so much garbage as a 49er fan.

Big Al may not be what he used to be but I have no problem with his decision making. No matter who you get in there nobody’s right all the time. And if anything happens to him the team is in good hands. And there is no question in my mind that this team is being biult right.

  17. Huff24 Says:

I guess there is a reason McCown didn’t start in Detroit. Kitna proved to be more consistent and Martz is precise and hardcore as an offensive coordinator. He probably got pissed off by the mistakes McCown made in practice. I think Kiffin shared that feeling and felt he needed to do something in regards to the QB position. Walter hasn’t faired much better so it was an easy decision to make for the coaches I’m guessing. It’s nice to know that Al Davis has a heart in regards to Andrew Walter. I wonder if he cared about the career of Tuiasosopo as well. You never heard Al talk about him.

  18. Go Raiders Says:

It’s in the best interest of the Raiders that you remove the 2nd to last bullet note.

    “It’s God not god…”

Actually, I was mocking the slogan. altogether. That better?

  20. Touchdownraaaaiiiiders Says:

Less we forget the Raiders were the #1 passing defense in the league 150.8 yards per game So there going to make quarterbacks look bad at times regardless of who is back there…

  21. Shell's Hat Says:

Blackhole, it’s not a matter of everyone being wrong some of the time. If that’s the case, then “everyone” is qualified to run the Oakland Raiders, right?

I mean, if everyone makes mistakes?

Running an NFL football team is not easy these days. And, considering Al’s obvious mental state, I don’t think he’s up for it. He’s shown shades of his old self by hiring Kiffin. But he did this before with Gruden, and we know how that ended.

From stonewalling Gruden after ‘00 to our four season skid after Gruden’s team fell apart to Al Davis barely being able to form a response to questions he was being asked in his most recent press conference, it’s plain to see he’s going downhill and it’s not going to get better. To be comfortable with that as a fan is fine if all you care about is the fact that Al runs the team and no one else. But don’t ever ask why we’re in last place every season.

Anyone who is okay with Al Davis running this team after what we saw today obviously does not care rather or not the Raiders win or lose. I care rather or not we win or lose

  23. Brittney Spears Says:

Al Davis rocks! You’re a hater, Shell’s Hat.

By the way, I’m rocking that wig both upstairs and down, guys. Watch the P2P’s for my next….video.

  24. vorpalX Says:

Seeing as how this offense seems to be very tight end friendly, BJ Ward seems to be quite a ballhawk. I dont hear anything about Stu or Huff making many plays or picks. I feel if BJ Ward beats out Stu, he should replace him. Having 4 solid safeties kinda sucks, cant have em all on the field at once. The only guy who can play CB is Huff.

  25. braveheartraider Says:

What the hell did Davis say? I’m in Scotland for pete’s sake,
    I miss all this!

  26. Justin Says:

Al Davis was fun to listen to during his press conference. He mentioned years from the 50’s all the way up through now. That’s 50+ years and you write him off as senile for getting one digit wrong on the year some idiot bought the Niners? Are you kidding me?

The best thing Mr Davis said was that they ask their players to do everything in training camp so they can see what they can and cannot do. When ppl see this blog and see that our QBs are throwing INTs, they should keep in mind that the coaches will determine what plays they can or cannot run with whatever particular QB is the starter based on their performance in practice.

Al still seemed sharp as ever. His body just can’t keep up with his mind anymore. I don’t know how you came to the conclusion that Al lost it but, personally, I thought he was great in the press conference and I listened to every word. I also feel bad for him because all the guys that were close to him from way back in the past are all now leaving him for another place. You could see that it’s starting to drain him. His body may be slowing down but it doesn’t appear that his life is. He’s going to be around for a while yet. He seems in decent health and is still competent so I don’t see any reason why we should be worried about him running this franchise.

  27. Art Shell's Hat Says:

I’m mad because Al Davis is a thousand times smarter than me at 78 than I am at 38. But then, he’s not living in mom’s spare bedroom either.

    http://cbs5.com/sports/local_story_214003238.html

I believe it’s this pressconference they talk about, its about Bill Walsh death and the signing of Culpepper….

Art Shell’s Hat… I think Al looks good, i rather have him as boss than Robert Kraft…

  29. Blackholepriest Says:

Shell’s hat, I’ve made simular mistakes when I’m preoccupied mentally. But if you think for one second Big Al can’t run this franchise your really taking a leap. This is his life it’s basically all he does. He doesn’t biuld ships or run Home Depots. Day and night night and day this is who he is.

He’s hired a brilliant young coach in my estimation to handle it on the field. But let me tell Mr. Davis knows more about whar’s going on in the NFL( he knows mre about other teams than their own owners) than most if talk to him for 5 minutes I gaurantee you, you’d feel the same way I do…..how do think he steals players off other rosters and knows what other teams are trying to do?…….. Ask any Football person or writer that’s dealt with him face to face.

Dude there’re a lot of haters out there but objective honest people will tell you everything I say is true. Don’t worry this franchise is any very capable hands……..the best in my opinion.
Also they went trough times like these earlier in his career and they’ve always pulled out
    this will be no different.

  30. braveheartraider Says:

Thanks once again La Milicia Negra, for your help. Yeah saw he interview,
and although I couldn’t hear many questions Al ,although slower than the
last time I heard him, seemed fine to me. He even seemed more friendly. I liked
the subject matter as he was talkin’ about a lot of guys that were playin when i first
started watching the NFL. Interesting points about ‘recoupable’ money and the
guarantees that JR’s people are wanting.

  31. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Braveheartraider…

no worries… we have to help each other out, especially us guys in excile =)

CBS5 is bay area based part of CBS, they usually cover the Raiders, go look there once in a while

  32. braveheartraider Says:

The thing I always admired about Davis is exactly Blackholepriest is
talkin about. Despite the few mistakes Al has made over the years
he’s always had the Raiders’ interests at heart and they come first, and those
    mistakes were made, in his judgement, for the betterment of the team. YOu can say that about very few other owners in the league. Owners want to win cause it generates income;
DAvis wants to win cause he loves his team. Period.

  33. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Twue, amen to that

  34. Charger Says:

Keep putting your faith in Al Davis. And we’ll keep sweeping the season series year after year. Long live Al. Hope he lives forever. The Raiders will suck forever. lol

  35. raiderfanindonkeycountry Says:

Mom’s spare bedroom ay 38? No wonder your a democrat! Go Raiders and I’M IN… but than I was never out.

  36. Raiders…where’s Willaims? « Red Zone Report Says:

[…] 2nd, 2007 Oakland Raiders TE Randal Williams has reportedly left the team, according to the Oakland Tribune. His number, 86, was given to TE Tony […]

  37. Ted Hendricks Says:

Art Shell’s hat. That hat was barely on his head.

Anyway, what makes Al so out of it? That he forgot when Eddie D. took over the 9ers??? WHo cares? A lot of people forget their own kids birthdays sometimes and I’ve done it (thank God my wife reminded me) and I’m a lot younger than Al Davis. And whats wrong with mentioning in a press conference that he’d like to have a Bill WAlh award? I think youre being waaaay to overly critical. Yes, he’s old. Yes he likes to get involved with the team.

Owners are always going to get involved in some capacity. And knowing that, I would much rather have an owner getting involved who knows and understands football, then an owner like Dan Snyder who knows nothing trying to get involved..

Think about it, and then put your hat on correctly.

  38. Big Daddy WooWoo Says:

    raiderfanindonkeycountry…

You’d come across as a more intelligent human being if you didn’t make stupid political jabs on a football board.

You may also find that people take you more seriously if you can act like you passed Junior High School English class and learn the difference between “your” and “you’re”.

I think the kids are calling your situation “self’d” these days.

  39. La Milicia Negra Says:

Coutney Anderson was cutted, Randal William would have been too at that time if it wasn’t for/of his ‘personal issues’ Propably his mom or dad has died… just a guess… But he knew before camp he would be cutted.

  40. SouthTexasRaider Says:

sweeping the series year after year……..if ur dolt sissy blue wearing punks can do that until 2015 then the overall series will finally be even, but i dont think so. merri-man will not have a repeat year, they will be testing him so u know how that will have an effect on his performance on the field. shells hat sounds like a complete ass. F#CK that Ted, tell him to take that cap off real quick and smack that sonnuva b!tch right behind the head.

  41. RaidersNumeroUno Says:

Charger - You are pathetic - your franchise has been a joke for the better part of 25 years now
Give me a break - I lived in SD for a few years recently, and your powder blue clad fair weather
fans make me LMAO - you don’t know football, you don’t AD, and don’t know the Raiders. We
had a three year run on the AFC West and went to the super bowl in 02 - then our all of our Vets got
injured and/or retired and that tied up our salary cap - we were forced to rebuild, which starting with the
D (which was better than your ROIDed out teams BTW) we have done a great job in just a few
years. Normally we just reload with Vets, but this time, due to the injuries, we had to do it with
draft picks - AL should not have hired Art Shell, but he ditched him quick when he realized he
made the mistake -We are only a couple pieces on the O-line a year of experience for J-Rus from kicking your sorry A** up and down the field for the next decade; Rivers is a joke w/o LT, and
I promise you his injury free streak isn’t going to last much longer with the pounding your new
joke of a coach (How Dumb is AL if he fired Norv and then you hired him BTW?) is going to make
him suffer through - W/o LT (one way or another he’s only got a couple more big time years left
in him anyway) your offense is DEAD! Enjoy this while it lasts, but before you use the phrase
“year after year”, why don’t you check the all-time series W-L column jacka** This is a brief
aberation in the Raiders Total Dominance over your sorry Super Bowl-less Choking Pathetic
Loser Team - BTW we’ll beat you this year - we almost did it with Shell’s 1970’s offense - I can’t
wait until Gallery gets redemption on Merriman’s kneees (for his little bull stomp stunt last year
in honor of that drunken loser LB that got blown up by the Cops) with our new cut-blocking
scheme. You’ll be carting off your players one by one - I can’t wait.

While I’m at it, go to your own board, oh wait, you don’t have anyone to play with because
Charger Fans (the few that actually exist) SUCK!!!

P.S. You don’t hear about #1 Picks dissing the Raiders a la Manning, whose Daddy wouldn’t even
let him play for your sorry butts…you’ve had a couple good drafts, but your guys are getting
old now and your recent picks suck - you’ll be back in the basement for a long time soon - enjoy
the last few years, with Norv leading the way, all you’ll have are memories - only yours will be
making the playoffs and choking on your home field in the first round instead of winning super
    bowls sucka!

  42. Art Shell's Hat Says:

Yes I’m democrat, I’m smrat. C’mon Al Davis has lost it, he messed up a year, teenagers in our public schools would never do that.

  43. SouthTexasRaider Says:

    im smrat….LMAO!

  44. Tom Cruise Says:

Let´s all convert to scientology and divorce 3 times until a medicine for ed comes up. You should all lighten up and talk training camp not politics and Al´s age.

  45. Charger Says:

I apologize to all the raider fans out there. You (The Raiders) are going to be the best in the AFC west this year. My San Diego Dolt Super Chokers will choke again this year because we have Norv Turner. Spanos are idiots. LT will have his legs broken sometime in the first 6 weeks in the season. Shawn Ferriman..(cheater) I mean merri-man will get caught with steriods again. Phillip Rivers will admit he is gay. I don’t know what the chokers were thinking not signing anyone this year, they decided to keep all the chokers this year. To all the loyal raider nation, I apologize. My dumb ass doesn’t know how to shut my mouth and know my role.

  46. Charger Says:

You give up 72 sacks, and you bring back virtually the same O-line. lol Oh wait, a 49ers cast-off, a thirtysomething with gimp knees is going to beat out your center for a starting job. Good luck with that. You do realize that no other team came close to the number of time your quarterbacks were sacked last season? Only one other team gave up as many as 50. No matter how hard your coach d’jour tries, you can’t hide Robert Gallery. Luis Castillo, Shawne Merriman, Sean Phillips and Jamal Williams will pad their sack stats off your O-line this season, just like last season. The Chargers led the league in sacks, and will again this season, because we get to play the Raiders twice a year. Merriman will lead the league again in sacks because you can’t stop him. Long live Al Davis. lol

  47. La Milicia Negra Says:

If it wasn’t a refrence to a joke from the simpsons, it makes me a very sad sexualherasment panda =)

  48. Charger Says:

I’m sorry again. We represent the chokers of the NFL. All the steriods Merriman distributed throughout the team have made it to the fans of the dolts. we don’t have a right to talk because we haven’t won any super bowls like the Raiders. Long live the Raiders. Only the Raider Nation have true fans. I don’t even know why I’m in this board. I need to put my head down and pout because I’m talking out of my a$$.

  49. Paul Says:

I think picking up Culpepper is a good thing and it will only help the development of Russell. In addition the competition at the quarterback spot has just gone up a notch. Think about it, if the knee is healthy than Culpepper will bring it every week and he has something to prove to 31 other teams so what the f*ck. Charger, Shell’s hat your all just haters and we as a Nation have no use for your kind. Norv will coach the dolts back to reality 9-7 and Al Davis is the RAIDERS F*ck Head. Jim Otto, OAKLAND RAIDER HOF’er is recovering from having his right leg amputated, so let’s all wish him well and I look forward to seeing him back in the owners suite with Al Davis in 2007…. Just Win Baby!!

  51. CHARGERS SUCK Says:

Hey Dolt - 72 sacks was a direct result of the 70’s offense we ran last year, and the archaic
man blocking scheme - our oline is now going to the Zone blocking system, which works for
all of our players (grove, carlisle from the Donkos, gallery, McQ, and our other off-season guys
including our 3rd round draft pick) - we’re back to the west coast offense, which means no 9
step drops, so ferriman will have to look to pad is Roid Inflated stats elsewhere Biatch because
the ball is coming out quick on pass plays and we’re going for your knees on run plays - Hope
we jack up your whole front 7 and send them to the ER. One way or another, your pathetic
secondary is going to get schooled by our WR’s since you only had to deal with Moss (who did
not even try last year) and Whitted (a bum only Art Shell would start), you don’t even know
what’s going to hit you this year. By the way, once Donovin Darius jacks up Antonio Gates a couple of times, his sorry butt will be done too - Hope you enjoyed your cup of coffee in the playoffs, b/c
it’s all coming to an end with Norv leading the way back to the basement where you belong.

  52. La Milicia Negra Says:

Stop writing back to the twerp sucker

He have no clue about football, so if you explain it to him, he will be lost anyhow. One thing he can, he sure could be a reeeeeal good teacher

  53. New England Raider Says:

Can we skip the charger chat? Please?
Anyone know Calvin’s situation? Whats their problem? I get the feeling this is one of the bottlenecks. I am concerned about DC. I saw him last year and he was awful, absolutley awful. Even in his probowl days i was never a big fan, he seemed to simply toss it up for moss, nothing special. He gets sacked too often and is not that accurate, doesnt throw well on the move and doesnt move all that well for that matter. I still rather see Josh or andrew till the break and then have Jamarcus come in.

Not hearing enough about our safeties, how are they doing? Ward seems to be doing real well but who would he replace?

Who is the fastest field player on this team? Washington, Routt, Huff, Buchanon, Higgins? Thoughts?

  54. Charger Says:

Don’t worry all you Raider fans, the super chokers will not make it to the playoffs this year as long as we have Norv Turner. We don’t deserve to be in the playoffs because we can’t win it. I am really scared of the Raiders because they have a new offense and one of the best defense in the league. I wish that the officials would start calling offsides and holding calls on the super chokers. That is the only way that we were winning games. I think we paid the officials to make bad calls against the raiders. NFL should be ashamed of themselves.

  55. dick V Says:

Jerry great job giving feedback on the Raiders. I wish that San Diego had something like your blog so their fans could express themselves over there instead of babbling on over here.
Who looks the best at QB so far? It seems like Knapp edged Culpepper out yesterday and McCown might be a better lead blocking back than any of our full backs.

  56. La Milicia Negra Says:

yeah could we start Knapp as qb in week 1?

  57. Northern Raider Says:

Big Al’s comments during the last news conference should put to rest any theories that he has gone senile. In my opinion, he sounded as sharp as ever and brought up some great points. His idea for a Bill Walsh QB award is wonderful. Walsh contributed a lot to this great game and is fully deserving of such an honor. Another example of Al’s loyalty to former friends and co-workers. His stance on contract negotiations with JR’s agents is another example of his acuity. He’s dead right to insist on financial protection clauses. Today’s players want it both ways. A contract is a contract: You don’t honor it, you shouldn’t get paid. End of story. Signing Culpepper shows that he’s not going for that B.S. If JR wants to sit at home twiddling his thumbs while his development falls farther behind, let him.
Hopefully, Jim Otto’s recovery from his leg amputation is going well. The man definitely doesn’t deserve the hell he’s gone through for years now. He is one of a dying breed: A true warrior who gave everything for his team without ever complaining. God bless you Jim.
It was interesting to read about Moss leaving practice with a sore leg. While I don’t like to see anyone (Even a quitter like Moss) get injured, perhaps that off-season article about his legs going was right. Same thing happened to John Jefferson of the old “Air Coryell” Chargers. No proper warmup over the years = shorter career. I suppose we’ll see come season.
    Have a great one Nation!

  58. Charger Says:

lol. Just one year ago at this time, Raiders fans were agog over Art Shell. Shell is going to return the nastiness to the Raiders. Art Shell is going to whip this team into shape. Art Shell is going to bring back “commitment to excellence.” lol Yeah. We know how that turned out. Raiders fans went from vain to vindictive after one game, when the Chargers punked you in your own house in prime time. And here you are again, setting yourself up again for it this season. I’ll be here. Long live Al Davis. lol

  59. Coach Sean Says:

There’s an article on foxsports.com about Russell’s contract hold-up. Interesting note about how some unnamed GM’s are saying that we OVERPAID for Zach Miller, and it in effect has hurt our available rookie cash pool, thus limiting some of our ability to give JaMarcus some of his bonus money up front.

Obviously, it’s not about the overall money, but when and how he gets his money, as stated by Al and the rest of the league. Those issues aside though, there does seem to be a fair amount of evidence that things are far from running smooth in the Raider front office right now. And you know that Bruce Allen or Lombardi would have had this deal done long ago.

Sounds like the money forfeiture issue has been addressed in every top 10 rookie contract this year, and that those holding out, are all for the same reasons. Calvin Johnson’s issues are two fold. One arguement is that he wants #1 pick money, with the idea in mind that if any other team had been picking #1 other than Oakland, he would have gone first and not JaMarcus. In addition, his agents and the Lions are essentially playing the same game, waiting to see whtat the other will sign their pick for to “set the bar”.

It’s frustrating, because what this essentially means right now is that if JaMarcus doesn’t sign soon, he’ll not only start losing out on practice snaps, but also preseason live action snaps. Say he signs by this weekend…how much work can we reasonably expect him to get in preseason game #1? Not good the longer this goes.

As for Daunte, I said yesterday this is a no risk signing. And based on comments by Lane Kiffin about turnovers in practice, Daunte, if healthy, is VERY MUCH in the hunt to be the starter in week 1 versus Detroit.

It’ll be interesting to say the least…

  60. Northern Raider Says:

Oh yeah, how could I be so remiss? Thanks for the great training camp fodder Jerry. Every morning brings something interesting these days. I’m already starting to get stoked for the season opener. Plans are already being laid for barbequed pork tenderloin and mucho beero.

  61. Charger Says:

Daunte Culpepper turned the ball over more than any other quarterback in the league when he was with the Vikes. Check the stats. He’s a fumbling machine. And now he can’t move. And he’s playing behind the worst offensive line in the NFL. lol This oughta be interesting.

  62. Nate Says:

For me the big question with our QB situation is this. Part of the statement is “If Culpepper can stay healthy.”
I’ll take it a step further with “How healthy is he right now?” Because if he’s not more than 70%, he’s not going to get better as the season (even pre-season) progresses. I take my shots with McCown, who can move around the pocket. Did you see that McCown put a nasty block on Namdi yesterday on a running play? That’s going to be key in Kiffin’s style. Something I don’t think Culpepper and Walter are doing well.
If we want a pure pocket statue passer, then by all means go Culpepper and Walter. If you want a guy who moves around the pocket, then McCown’s our guy. If you want a mixture of the 2, then we better get on the ball with signing JRuss, and get him to pressure his agents.

  63. Charger Says:

I’m an idiot. I don’t know what in the world I am talking about. Eli Manning didn’t even want to play for us. My feelings are hurt. I need a diaper because I pooped myself. I am a total idiot choker fan that doesn’t know anything about football. Just because my team had three winning season compared to the raiders winning %, we don’t stand a chance. I’m an idiot. Go Raider Nation!!!!!

  64. Nate Says:

Last year, Mario Williams agreed to a 6 year, $54 million contract; with $26 million guaranteed. Reggie Bush agreed to a 5 year, $60 million contract, with $26 million guaranteed.
Russell’s contract is agreed upon in principle, roughly 5-6 years, $57-60 million, with a guarantee of $27 million. His agents are wanting $30 million guaranteed money, and they are waiting to see what Calvin Johnson gets, and use that as their base. I think they are hurting Russell if this is the case, because the offer on the table reflects fair market value, in that it reflects a similar number that Bush received last season. Al Davis, Amy Trask, and Mark Jackson know this. Russell’s agents are making him look bad. The Raiders don’t have the bad image here.
The other area that Russell’s agents are hurting him. They are worried about Calvin Johnson. if they sign Russell with the Raiders before Johnson, they set the bar of negotiation in favor with the Lions, regardless of what Johnson wants.
I think bottom line is Russell’s agents want $28-29 million guaranteed, Al doesn’t want to pay more than $27.5 million (nor should he).
From what I hear too, CJ is asking for a ludicrous 5-6 years, $65-70 million, $35 guaranteed.
Again, if Russell’s agents sign him with the Raiders at the current offer, that immediately takes the power out of Johnson’s hands, and no one in the league would sign him for more, until he gains experience to show he’s worth it. The ball is in the JRuss’ agents’ court, and remember they argree in principle to the overall price of the contract, just not the guaranteed portion.

  65. Charger Says:

    SF Chron, July 31
    By David White

How many Raiders employees does it take to sign a No. 1 draft pick? At least four, and, apparently, that’s still not enough to get close to making a deal with rookie quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

Be sure, the rest of the league is noticing.

“It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” said one agent who dealt with the Raiders this past offseason. “No one has any idea who’s actually in charge over there. It’s bizarre.”

But multiple NFL and team sources blame the inexperience of Oakland’s new contract negotiators for what looks to become a prolonged holdout by Russell, who already has missed six practices and the first four days of training camp in Napa.

“It’s embarrassing,” one team source said of the stalled negotiations.

  66. Charger Says:

There I go again, I am really an idiot. san Diego Chokers does not have a board because they can’t win the big games. I am really a loser. I should become one with the raider nation. Like I said before, we couldn’t even sign Eli Manning. Instead we have Philip “cry me a” Rivers. Also, LT is very classless. He couldn’t take the pounding from behind when we played the patriots. So much for living in the past.

  67. PhillyRaider Says:

Morning All! It’s another FANTASTIC day for the NATION ELITE!! I’m really liking the things that Jerry’s not saying are going on in paractice. Like false starts, off-sides, lot’s of confusion on plays, etc. The team said a big part of what went wrong last year was the fact that things were told to them a million different ways by a million different coaches. Lane and the guys seem to be very organized and so are the practices. Trust me, as a former player and now coach, when your guys are confident in the battleplan, they battle smarter and harder.

    PEACE

  68. La Milicia Negra Says:

I hope Culpepper only was signed to mentor JaMarcus, both top picks, htey have much incommon. My bet is McCown will be the starter in Week one, hopefully not Culpepper.

I laughed my ass of when the dolphins signed him, in comes Harrington and saves the day, if we wanted one of the dolphins qb’s it should have been Joey Harrington.

Culpepper hasn’t been good in 4-5 years, why should he suddenly become great again? I don’t believe it and I never will, if we ever had a chance to win 7 games as I previously had hoped, those odds just became worse. Not because Culpepper can’t win 7 games but because now 3 qb’s are in the hunt for the starting job… the less time the future starter gets with the first team before preseason and in the preseason the worse our season becomes

  69. braveheartraider Says:

I don’t think we sign Culpepper if JR had signed, buddy, but he didn’t so we need
another QB. And there is no way Walter is challenging for the starter spot so we got
two guys duking it out to start. Judging by the reports, if JR had signed he just might
have won the top slot, but we’ll never know.

  70. raiderfanindonkeycountry Says:

Thanks for the heads up big daddy, I missed on that one. I just had an opportunity to watch the Al Davis interview and IMO anybody who thinks Al has lost anything is sadly mistaken. He’s still a fierce competitor and loyal friend. Anybody who takes a shot at Al Davis takes a shot at the Raiders and me. That enough football for you big daddy? Did I spell everthing correctly?

  71. braveheartraider Says:

Don’t take it so personally raiderfanindonkeycountry. I wouldn’t be a Raider fan
if it wasn’t for Al Davis, but i still criticize some of his decisions from time to time.
But like someone said earlier he still knows football better than any other owner
even if it don’t make him infallable.

  72. Just Win Baby Says:

Josh McCown will be the starter, a crippled Culpepper will still beat out a healthy AW unless JR doesn’t sign, in which case we will have nobody to play QB if McCown gets hurt. Any scenario looks icreasingly more bleak withour JR signed and getting ready. I seriously doubt that JR will be worth what he is getting paid no matter how it pans out unless he immediately wins and continues to do so for his entire career. There are a ton of mediocre players grotesquely overpaid just because they were drafted ahead of somebody who was way better than them. I hope JR doesn’t turn out the same way. Even if JR was in camp from day 1, he wouldn’t be ready to play anytime soon so this hold out stinks to high heaven but is, in reality, a non-issue in terms of how things play out for the first half of the season. Culpepper would have been brought in if JR was signed 3 weeks ago - with or without JR this team will be better and I am not worried about getting him signed right away if it means we won’t cave to demands made by some greedy bas**rd who needs 30 mil instead of 27 mil. Personally, I say F**K him.

  73. Just Win Baby Says:

Derrick Burgess should bi**h slap some sense into the punk.

  74. raiderfanindonkeycountry Says:

No offense taken at all loyal fellow member of the Raider Nation. We are fortunate to live in a country where folks have a right to there opinions and I was merely stating one. But back to football. If DC can stay healthy, and that’s a big if, and our offensive line jells our Raiders will once again be a force to reckon with. I know that’s a run on sentence but what the hell.

  75. braveheartraider Says:

Kiffkin neither confirmed nor denied they would have signed DC if Russell had signed,
and my own personal opinion is they wouldn’t have if JR had signed. I think when it
became clear Russell was holding out it made sense to sign an experienced QB and DC
was available. I dont care who starts as long as the coach thinks he’s best for
    the job.

DAY 6! REMEMBER PEOPLE IT IS DAY 6! Damn, our QB’s are a whole 15-20 pratices into an entirely new system and playbook. (counting OTA’s and mini’s) Most of the QB-WR combos are new. The defense is running on experience and by the way they’re pretty good. I’d expect some growing pains for our QB’s.

Don’t forget - these pcks also are amid some serious reps. They’re not just throwing 25-35 times like in a game. I also like that there have been quite a few TD’s thrown.

Give them a chance to learn before we start screaming about how terrible things are.

  83. Raiderhopefull Says:

    Coach on Wheels :

Thing is offense lacks talent. i dont think Coach Lombardi can make them a decent unit. If they could score 14 a game I think we could win at least 6 games. Im taking the wait and see aproach but its hard to imagine a decent offense with lack of talent. Our biggest whole being running back and Qb. The 2 most important parts of an offense.

  84. jh Says:

Charger you are a moron . . . When a person is a fan they root for and try to stay optimistic about what ever it is they are trying to support. Real fans do that even at times when what they are rooting for sucks. Will you no longer be a Charger fan when your team has a time when they are not doing so well ? This is a simple life lesson that your parents should have taught you. . . it is called being a good sport in case you have not figured that out by now. I have family and friends in San Diego, Denver and Kansas City. I always wish them well concerning their respective teams and they do the same to me. . . of course we all want to beat each other but there is that thing I mentioned earlier called being a good sport that comes into play. You can post as many stats and or quotes as you like and they are all really meaningless. In the end all that matters to most of us here is that we are Oakland Raider fans . . . not fair weather fans.

    Receiving yds. 19
    Receptions 1… (That’s correct, “1″ as in O-N-E.)
    TDs 0

    Lamont Jordan
    Salary - $7,550,000
    Rushing yds. 434
    Ave. 3.8
    TDs 2

Robert Gallery… a.k.a. Roberta Galleria a.k.a. Raiders’ version of Tony Mandrich
    Salary - $6,831,160
Anchor of an offensive line that allowed 72 SACKS!

Those silver & crap players are dogs with fleas.

    TWERPING TRUTH

The Raiders and their asinine fan base are the NFL’s version of pro football comic relief.

I’ll take L.T., Rivers, a great offensive line, Gates, Merriman, Jamal Williams, Phillips, Castillo, and Oshlansky and you homie loser ghetto gang-banging Raider fans can take the hapless, hopeless, talentless silver & crap.

  92. NewRaiderFan Says:

I know I’m in the minority here, but my sympathies are with JRussell in the contract situation. I’m sure to him $10M guaranteed is enough to get him on the field. But the reality is that his career could be over with the first snap, God forbid! He has to get the money upfront. I don’t think there is an NFL player alive who would disagree with the position his agents are taking. In fact, they’d probably think less of him if he accepted something less than what his draft position suggests he should get.

Also, if Al Davis really wants to take a stand on guaranteed money in rookie pay, he should have taken it up with the Players Assn and the other teams BEFORE the drat, instead of taking a stand with the #1 pick.

This guy is the #1 pick. This should be the happiest time of this kid’s life. He doesn’t need this
stress when all he’s asking for is parity with what other number one’s have gotten and with what players drafted below him have gotten. This kid loves football and wants to play.

The Raiders knew the guaranteed money that would be expected. If they didn’t want to pay it, they should not have drafted him. They shouldn’t be trying to make a statement with the #1 pick. I see see the Browns fighting it out with Quinn because he’s trying to get pay above his draft position, but I don’t see it here with Russell and the Raiders.

That said, I agree those salaries are outrageous. I agree it seems senseless to pay that
kind of money before you know what your product is. But the fact remains that the NFL
has a way of doing business that Al Davis needs to follow. Instead of flexxing his
muscles with a rookie from rural Alabama, he ought to have flexxed them with the
    owners and the players association.

I hope this contract situation is not indicative of how JRussell is going to be treated throughout
his career as a Raider. If it his, I feel very sorry for him.

  93. Robospawn Says:

oh, and Charger - since you’re keen on reliving the past…

The Chargers are 8-0 at home this season hopefully we can add 2 more wins to this record on the way to Miami! - Chrgerfan

I think we are the most complete team in the NFL. We have one big problem though..we beat OURSELVES. If we can start having a championship mentality, we could have a “super” season. There isn’t one dominant team in the NFL, it is up for grabs…Let take it! - bolt4life

San Diego is by far superior to every team in the league. No one can match us in D-line, linebackers, O-line, and of course, running back. LT is the best ever! We’re supowerbowl bound! - Chargersam

    Then there’s this…

is at some time, Marty resurrects Martyball. Like during the playoff’s two years ago…

    run/run/run/punt… prevent/prevent/prevent….loss

I hope that version of Martyball doesn’t return. I can’t say I believe he learned his lesson because it’s happened so many times before. I think you cannot teach an old dog new tricks.

    Boltsinjerzee

Honestly, Lets hold our heads up. We played a hell of a game. The Pats are a terrific football team. Do I agree with going for it on 4th down instead of the three points? No. Do I agree with the challenge of the fumble in the 4th quarter? No. Besides the missed opportunities, the turnovers, and the flagrant boneheaded penalties which should have never happened to start with, We played a hard game and we fought the Patriots for 4 quarters, 60 mintues, and they knew it. I am a Charger fan deep and pure. It hurts to see my team lose such a game but at the same time, I am a NFL fan that loves the game. - Adam33

I’m totally destroyed! Thanks Parker and Drayton for blowing the game oh did I mention Kaeding. Geez! Its a shame my kids had to see a grown man lose his cool during the game, but damn, you can’t make those kind of mistake in the playoffs. This was our year. Wow! I’m not even calm enough right now to think of next year. - Charger Fan 21

LIGHTS OUT! Marty didnt pay the bill. Seymore

    And my favorite…

If he is to be fired, I just hope that Cam Cameron gets named to the open post. It would be a shame if we lost him too to some other head coaching job. I think Cam has what it takes to lead this team to the goal that it is very capable of reaching. Cam is going to be highly sought after starting right now. It is no secret that A.J. Smith does not like Marty. It is also no secret that A.J. is a superb GM and most certainly recognizes the offensive genius that is Cam Cameron. As much as I respect Marty, I think it is in the best interests for the San Diego Chargers Organization to fire Marty so that Cam does not leave elsewhere. (And out of all the vacant coaching jobs, there would hardly be a coach who would rather take Miami, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Arizona, or Oakland over San Diego, a potential Super Bowl contender for the next 5 years or so)

What are your thoughts on this?

And who’d you get? NORV TURNER!!!!! LOL!!!!!!

And by the way, when you said “TWERP’S FINAL THOUGHTS” I hope you used the literal deifinition and made it your final thoughts. I’m sure your perfectly phrased blog has already gotten to Al’s attention and he’s decided stop practice and cancel the whole season.

  96. Tennessee Raider Says:

“Twerp” This guy !!! How many final thoughts can you have. He must have a sad pitiful life. He so wants to be like us.
Have you noticed every time the Raiders make a move he pops back up again. I think it is because he hears us coming and he is scared to death.

  97. raiderfanindonkeycountry Says:

I honestly don’t know why I even bother but here goes…. Fare weather fans!!!!!? I happened to be residing in sunny Southern California the one and only year the dolts actually made it to the SB and you couldn’t swing a dead cat without hitting a “charger fan”. And when they went back into the crapper (almost immediately by the way) few would admit to being one. So don’t tell me about fair weather fans. Even after a humbling 2 and 14 season I’m still in, but then I was never out….

  98. SouthTexasRaider Says:

twerp is bi-polar and cant remember his final thoughts.

  99. RaiderMight Says:

    NewRaiderFan,

I agree with you. While it does seem bad that it would take this long to accept a contract and makes him seem greedy. No one realizes that in order to sign a contract with an agent, there is a certain level of control that he has to give up. Most players are asked to give the agent full discretion on what kind of a deal they are going to fight for. Everything has to come from the agent, otherwise the player is at breach of contract. A lot of these morons on the board will say things like “Fire the agent”, “Stop being greedy”, “Should have so and so slap him”. Well in most of these cases if you do something along those lines, you are in a breach of contract. There is not really much that Russell can do about.

While Johnson is in a similar boat Russell, his is a tiny bit different. In his case, (according to reports), it’s his morther declining the deals that agents are giving him. Based on last year, they are fair market deals, but his mother wants him to get paid #1 money.

Again this all hear-say, but people have to start to learn to use some logic before you start daming your future QB. Whether you like it or not, Russell is our future, you better start liking it or learning to live with it. :)

    Take care

  100. RaiderMight Says:

Btw, this is the same boat that Quinn is in. But in his case, his agents are being overly greedy. They want him to be paid top 10 money when he was #22. But since people just love to kick a horse when he’s down they only talk about the Raiders situation.

  101. RAIDER MOE Says:

    CHARGER….. you crack me up………LOSER!!!

  102. raiderfanindonkeycountry Says:

Seems to me the last time I attended a Raiders/dolts game in San Diego there was a lot more Silver And Black then powder blue:)

  103. Just Win Baby Says:

The Tampa Bay Bucs couldn’t win with their nifty peach colored jerseys and their sissy Zorro emblem and the chargers will never win with their sissy powder blue jerseys and their transparent, no history, loser fans. Why don’t you limps go to a Chargers blog? Oh yeah, nobody cares enough about the choke-to-death losers to start one. That’s why you, like a homeless crack whore, keep pandering your unwelcome wares here.

  104. Charger Says:

    Excellent work twerpfan 1.

OMG, if the salaries of Porter, Jordan and Gallery aren’t proof of how whacked the Raiders organization is, the laughingstock of all pro sports, Al Davis and his press conference. What a bunch of buffoonery.

Let’s compare two organizations just by looking at the quarterback situation.

In San Diego you have Philip Rivers, the team leader working exclusively with the first-team offense. A 1st-round draft pick whom the team sat for two seasons so he could watch a Pro Bowl QB ahead of him engineer two winning seasons. When his time comes, he turns in a Pro Bowl season in his first year as a starter, notching 14 wins, 62 % completions, 22 TDs, 9 INTs, 92 QB rating. Going into 2007 the unquestioned starter, one of the league’s rising stars, surrounded with elite weapons, working with the team’s 1st-round draft choice who was signed and in camp on day 1.

In Napa, you have a college coach. You have 3 QBs, none of them figure into the Raiders’ longterm plans, not just because the the franchise lacks any longterm vision, but because an ancient old man who should be shuffling his walker around a retirement home with an ocean view is fooling around with another strong-armed but washed up, bum-kneed, over-the-hill AB. Meanwhile, the megahyped first-round pick sits at home on his mama’s couch getting fatter. Five weeks before the season starts college coach has no clue who his opening-day starter is going to be. He has no idea if his first-round pick is going to be a member of the team befor the end of the preseason.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure which team is going to play in January and which team is going into the toilet before September is done.

  105. Cruzin Says:

The Chargers do have a lot of talent, but their middle linebackers could be their achillies heal this season…the thing that gets me is we were the worst we’ve ever been, they had the best team in the league and we were one crap fumble call away from beating them on their turf….

  106. djstoggie Says:

Yup, Ryan Leaf is off to a FANTASTIC start. That world class organization handled his situaltion brilliantly.

It must be all the experience of having high first round draft picks.

  107. Charger Says:

Notice that the brainiacs who drafted Leaf are gone. Years ago. But Al is still making decisions in Oakland. What does that tell you? lol

  108. raider rich Says:

CHARGER FAN #2. Where did you go, your f#cking GREAT! GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  109. Jimi18 Says:

Very nice Jerry!!! been busy these passed few days, and got caught up with your few blogs.. very great detailed info, for the Raider Nation..
    keep up the great work!!

  110. Charger Says:

BTW…Steve Corkran must be horrified to be identified as a Media News Beat Writer. Jerry, you’ve worked for Dean Singleton for years, you know what it’s like. But are the newsies at the CoCo Times over the shock yet? I feel for ya Steve….I served some time as a Singleton slave.

  111. KoolKell Says:

Excuse me, I don’t remember, but have the Chargers EVER played in a Super Bowl?

  112. Charger Says:

    KOOLKELL REDUX….

    KoolKell Says:
Art Shell’s a Hall of Famer, one of the best Raiders ever. I think it’s apparent he knows what he’s doing. Some of you guys need to take a chill pill.

    September 11th, 2006 at 10:06 am
    KoolKell Says:
No way San Diego is coming in here and leaving happy. It’s going to be absolutely electric.

    lmao

  113. KoolKell Says:

I’ll take that as a no

  114. RastaRaider Says:

Once again Charger Says and twerp reveal to the world that they love Raider-hating more than they love the Chargers. As I stated yesterday, this is the true passion of Charger fans - they’re Raider haters first and Charger fans second. For proof, look no further than all of the posts made here by Charger Says and twerp. They’re more focsued on attempting to discredit our team than they are on discussing their own team. I may have overlooked something but I don’t think I’ve noticed any posts here from Chiefs or Broncos fans in the last several days since I began posting here. This is because when it comes to Raider-hating, Charger fan is in class all by his lonesome, a minority of one.

This could have something to do with the fact that over the last 20 years ( I use the 20 year figure because members of the cult of Raider-Hatred love to ask “What have the Raiders done in the last 20 years?”) the Raiders have won significantly more playoff games (7 to 3) than the Chargers over that span (head to head wins, division titles, AFC Titles and Super Bowl appearences are even).

Obviously we don’t need to discuss what happened prior to the last 20 years because we all know how the Raiders outdistance the Chargers in these categories the further back in history we go.

  115. KoolKell Says:

We’ll all be watching Merriam this yr, as those guys who have to get off the juice usually don’t do well the next yr.

But in any case, I feel comfortable Kiffin can and will make adjustments x & o wise in case the Left tackle can’t handle him.

    LT is another story…..

  116. Charger Says:

    I suck.

  117. Charger Says:

    chargers sucks. LT sucks…any questions???

  118. KoolKell Says:

Something else, Marty Shorrhemmeasshole was a Raider Killer, I’m glad that co$*su&r is out of the division. With Norv, you’ll take a step back from 14-2, 10 wins more likely, and down from there.

  119. KoolKell Says:

If I never see Marty Shottenheimer again it’ll be too soon.

  120. Charger Says:

How many games will it take for foaming at the mouth Raiders fans to turn on Kiffin? Someone should start a lottery. lol

  121. KoolKell Says:

“Foaming at the mouth Raider fans” I since a bit of admiration on your part.

  122. KoolKell Says:

    “sense” that is ;-)

  123. KoolKell Says:

Can anyone remember a time when Charger fans came up here to the Coliseum, took over,
got drunk, threw beer cans all over the parking lot, got in fights all over the stadium, ran the locals out,
shut down local business and generally enjoyed the hell out of themselves? I don’t. But I remember
Raider fans doing that in San Diego, lmao

  124. oktobeme Says:

    raiderfanindonkeycountry,
I have just came to Colorado Springs and want to see the Raiders and Doncos game here, can you help me? As to my location you should know my occupation, can’t really tell online.

  125. La Milicia Negra Says:

yeah but they won the AFL in 1963, wasn’t that Al Davis last year with the Chargers??
    since then hmm well…

Btw I’ve just seen Zodiac, man the public must have been horrfied in the bay area at that time….

  126. oktobeme Says:

Do the Chargers even have a website? If they do let me know, I am tired of this crap!!! I will blog the crap out of them from now on. This is ridiculous. Losing is all they know!!

  127. Charger Says:

KoolKell…darn you. Don’t start being nice. You’ll ruin it for me. lol

La Milicia…I just watched that movie. I was 11-12 years old in Modesto back in ‘69-’70. I remember the Zodiac well. It creeped me out. I was involved in some newspaper coverage in 2001 when detectives were poking around Valley Springs, east of Stockton, looking for evidence on Leigh Allen.

  128. Hitlery Clinton Says:

Sieg Heil from the Global Village Nurture Nazis!! Marty to Norv is a definite dropoff, eh? Chargers have that magnificent OL, but Norv is the kind of coach who takes credit for success and assigns blame to the players for failure, and his negative charisma will rub off on his new team just as it did on my man’s Redskins as it did the Raiders. Oh now he has the talent, yeah surrre, provided for him by previous management, at last a good job for Norv. It’s not like Snyder or Davis are afraid to spend a buck on the players that Norv wanted, but Hey! KoolKell is too generous. Nine wins. Charger fans are counting their chickens before they hatch.

  129. Charger Says:

  130. Mark Finzel Says:

La Milicia, 1963 was Al’s first year with us. We finished 2nd in the old AFL West to SD, no wild card then, but we beat the Chargers both times we played them. Partly because of this, Al got a “Young Man Of The Year” award from the Oakland chamber of commerce for his efforts to put the city of Oakland on the map as something more than a poor relation to that more famous town across the water. Read it somewhere.

  131. Charger Says:

Chargers will win 12 games minimum or my name isn’t Charger. lol

AJ Smith provided the talent on the Chargers. Nothing previous management about it.

Snyder and Davis are both fools who should turn the management of their teams over to competent NFL GM’s.

Redskins are 41-55 since Norv Turner left, the last three seasons under a HOF coach. The Raiders are 2-14 since Norv Turner left. Them’s facts Raiders fans. lol

  132. La Milicia Negra Says:

Mark Finzel… ahh yeah that’s right, of course, he startet in the 63 season…

Charger-dude? your’re from bay area and rooting for the chargers? you like uniforms or what is it, it’s weird to me… is the movie anything like the real thing

    Hope I did’nt spell anything right =)

  133. JB Says:

I watched the raw footage on http://www.cbs5.com/sports/ of Al Davis’ press conference and aside from his aging physical limitations, I found him to be mentally sharp - especially for someone his age. His experience is unequaled by any other owner and you have to know that his life is the Raiders. He lives, breathes and dresses RAIDER. More power to him at this stage of his life.

I feel he said some fairly important things. More specifically, the JR hangup is NOT THE AMOUNT OF MONEY, it’s the terms and conditions to which that money is tendered. His position on this is very sound - a very legitimate & smart business decision. There’s nothing lame about not giving the store away and setting a precedent that would ultimately kill the league. Another smart decision he referenced was the acquisition of DC. He got him at a bargain basement price with little downside, he says all his sources say he’s healthy once again and he’s a known commodity. He went on to say that experiments like this (i.e. picking up veterans who were thought to be over the hill) have paid off well in the past. Who’s going to argue with, Matusak, Alzedo, Plunkett, Hendricks, Lott and the list goes on? There have been numerous success stories like this in Raider history. Why not for DC too? If it doesn’t work out no harm no foul. If it does work out GREAT! Al has always been big on GREAT PLAYERS. GREAT PLAYERS make great plays and WIN great games. Isn’t that what the Al Davis’ Raiders have always been about? I’ve been a fan since 64 and that’s always been my understanding.

Sure the last 4 years have not been up to par but in today’s NFL game, with free agency, there are no more real dynasties. New England comes the closest to that description nowadays but I don’t see them up there this time around.

As far as the Gruden deal goes, my take is that is was a business decision. Gruden was pressing for more control of the team and that’s just not going to happen in Oakland with Davis at the helm. Given the impasse of the power control, Davis made a business decision to trade Gruden for multiple 1st round draft choices a second and some others, and 8 million in cash. In other words, Davis got 4 years of labor for free while removing what was sure to be a disgruntled head coach. That was a very smart “business” decision. Gruden wasn’t the main reason we lost the SB to Tampa even though he had both playbooks. The failure was the head coach of the Raiders and his inability to don’t do the obvious. He really needed to mix things up a bit. Additionally and my personal reason for the loss was Barrett Robbins not being there. The whole O-line cohesiveness was lost ans so went the game. Too bad as I was really rooting for Gannon to get his just reward.

I feel good about what we’ve seen so far this year. The coaching and player acquisition/removal all looks positive. As far as the O-line goes lets wait and see. My sense is they will be just fine and if they are, we’ll do just fine thank you. If I didn’t know better I’d say Al Davis picked Shell/Walsh to assure the 1st round pick for what Al says is the feature QB for the next decade. Crazier things have happened and I think Al is still a fox in the hen house when it comes to getting GREAT PLAYERS for the Raiders. Eating it for one year, especially when you are already in the cellar, to guarantee 10 more great years sounds like a good business decision to me.

Dumbte Culfumbler meets the Oakland Sadists…

  135. Truth Says:

    + 7 +

  136. Mark Finzel Says:

So now the Dolphin fans want us to find God. What’s the matter, did you lose Him?

  137. raider rich Says:

Yea they lost DC. Paid like hell for him instead of BREEZE. STUPID IDIOTS. Then we get him one year later, much more healthier, and for 750 K Guaranteed with insentives, and gave up 0 draft picks. GUPPIES need to change there water, been swimming in there crap way to long. GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
