Hold the phone

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007 at 5:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Less than 30 minutes after the previous blog was posted, a high-ranking Raiders official involved in negotiations with top draft pick JaMarcus Russell called to say coach Lane Kiffin had “miss-spoken” and was in error regarding the first “face-to-face” meeting between Raiders negotiators and Russell’s agents.

The official, who preferred his name not be used. said Kiffin probably meant to infer that it was the first face-to-face meeting recently, rather than at all.

In light of this information, all criticisms regarding the Raiders waiting until Aug. 22 to first meet face-to-face with Russell are incorrect.

I stand by the contention that both the Raiders and Russell’s agents should have realized before the draft there was a big problem and that better communication would have prevented it.

Assuming Russell eventually signs, both sides are going to feel pretty ridiculous when the amount of guaranteed money comes in at the approximately $31 million figure which has been anticipated since before the draft began.

Thank god, because if that was the first time, that just gives ESPN and the national media another reason to criticize the Oakland Organization.

  2. Charger Says:

lol Only the silver and bleak. Keep providing the league with comic relief, Al. lol

  3. Jimi18 Says:

I just hope it gets done before week one starts, then we can get the 53 man roster set, and go on from there.

  4. J-rOcK2118 Says:

so does this mean it will get done by friday? some one anserw back

  5. Best in the west Says:

Is it just me or has anyone noticed that reporters from espn are mostly the only telecasters who believe the raiders will be horrid again. Notice the reporters who talk good about the raiders are not affiliated with espn. Why? I gope the raiderrs come out and kiss ass all year just just to shut these bitches the hell up. N when we do I’d love to hear what they have to say then.

  6. J-rOcK2118 Says:

that is true we shall provr them wrong espeacially that sean salsburry he is the ultimate raiader hater

  7. Raiders Rain Says:

Wait a minute, were getting smack from a Chargers fan here? Are you kidding me?! Dude! Your new head coach is NORV TURNER man! Enough said.

  8. ekgraider Says:

Jerry thanks for the update. But everything i heard is that the number isnt the problem. Its the wording of the option bonus. However i do believe this is Al Davis making a point and trying to fix an obviously broken system. Only difference between your line of thought and mine is i agree with him.

  9. Dick V Says:

Who cares what ESPN thinks. The Nfl Network and the NFL Radio put espn to shame with their professionalism. Matt Lienart had a similar holdout last year with the Cardinals and ended up starting by week 6 or something. I don’t think it is a strtech to beleive that Jamarcus could be ready to go by week 1 of 2008. The bottom line is that Russell will be over paid. You think the Raiders have made a joke of the # 1 pick: what about the Texans passing on Reggie Bush, Matt Lienart, Vince Young, and D’brickishaw Fergueson for Mario Williams. How many sacks did Williams get last year 4. The reason they did that was because they were cheap and did not want to pay Bush, Young or Lienart top dollar. They low balled the #1 pick by picking the player that was not ranked in the TOP 5 prospects in anyones mock draft.

Russell will be a good QB because he will not be thrown into the fire. He will get a chance to learn the plays, the system, the players, get used to the change in lifestyle, watch a couple of vetrans all before he takes the field. The O line will be built and ready to go by nexst year, or at the very least it will be a lot better. Russell and the Raiders are doing what is best for themselves. There is too much money on the table, and too much at risk to rush the negotiations because the media thinks your stupid.

  10. Blackholepriest Says:

Right on Dick V!!! sometimes JMac eventhough I appreciate all his updates rushes to judgement to be critical. I just wish a reporter would just once make sure he has all the facts B4 jumping to be first. But all things considered I do think JMac has made a genuine attempt to shed the proper light on things. And for that I thank him.

The deal should get done by weeks end.

  11. Bernard Petrino Says:

Of course this is ridiculous. This is Al we are talking about. Drafting JWuss Number one was ridiculous. No one was talking about JaSlobus Russell as a number one pick around Christmas 06. Then he lights up a Notre Dame defense whose secondary consists of accounting majors and Al is frothing at the mouth that this Russell kid is the next Elway.

Marinovich, Wilson, Dickey, and now Russell. Al really knows how to pick 1st round QBs.

  12. yourmomsaraider Says:

…”lol… only the powder bluebolls & ladainian yellows. keep providing the league with superbowl fantasies… LOL!”

  13. jeremy Says:

    Charger a quick history lesson:

    1st pick of the draft: Raiders 1; Chargers 2 in 3 years (’01 & ‘04)

Superbowls: Raiders 3 wins, 2 losses; Chargers, I’m sure we don’t want to talk about that embarassing game.

Myopian: An extreme homer that simply fails to see any faults.

As you will see with Norvell as your head coach, you are the one coming in to these blogs and acting like a myopian. Everyone here knows there are faults with our Raiders, however, we are in this together as we are FANS of the Raiders.

Get your facts right & understand your verbage if you want to come into an opposing teams blog and spark your bs. Until you have a team with a Super Bowl WINNERS’ ring, chill out. Otherwise your no different than a Lions, Cardinals, Seahawks, Bills, etc fan out there.

I would bet your a fair weather fan too. I bet in ‘03 when your team sucked worse than the Raiders you didn’t have any Chargers apparel but now are stocked full.

I bet most fans in this blog all proudly wear their Raider gear win or lose. Obviously we don’t jump on the bandwagon when our team wins and jump off when they lose.

    Get a life you myopian.

  14. Los "T" Says:

Pat Kirwan reported awhile back that a GM in the league said that Russells agents wanted $40 million guaranteed. If so this 33% more than any other 1st pick in the league and is ridiculous. I don’t think anyone knows whats going on except those involved, so no sense in getting worked up about it.

  15. bill Says:

Now Jerry, I told you in the previous comments that if you reread what he said, YOU misqouted him. Come on man….Geez.

  16. Bernard Petrino Says:

Christ people, lay off Jerry. He has to deal with the NFL equivalent of Pravda, the Raiders “PR” Department.

  17. Johnny Chico Says:

I was sick when we drafted Russell but now I’m optimistic. I’m optimistic that the Falcons would pay a kings ransom for him in a trade and they will likely be horrible this season so maybe we can repeat the 1st QB overall next year as well.

    Trade Russell!

  18. Bernard Petrino Says:

Good idea Chico! Pawn the overhyped QB on that gullible Arthur Blank!

  19. Los "T" Says:

Jeremy - nice post. Discharger doesn’t understand that his team has never won anything more than a division title (and they didn’t represent correctly).

  20. Just Win Baby Says:

Jerry was reporting a direct quote. Don’t blame the messneger here, the head coach would be a pretty reliable source.

    Bernard:

JRuss was widely considered the top QB by many analysts prior to the ND game. The ND game just put gloss on his already strong resume. Whoever wins a bowl game doesn’t automatically change a player’s SEC ranking. Top conference in the country and he’s First Team All-SEC QB among other awards.

20-3 in two seasons as the starter in the talented SEC. Unlike Quinn who directed a highly overrated ND team thus giving him more attention, JRuss was only gaining attention his Junior year. 3 times SEC player of the week in ‘06
highlighted with the Tennessee with comeback win.

He’s going to be the protoypical QB with size, smarts (good grades), and his ability to lead an offense despite not being very vocal. Did you hear the Chargers GM Butler said he would be worried if OAK took JRuss first because of the talent he is?

JRuss comes from a pro-style offense where he was allowed to call audibles and read the D. Obviously we need to sit him for the year and allow him to slowly get acclimated to the NFL. Just wait and see. JRuss won’t be compared to Dickey who they switched to WR because he was black and they drafted Stabler with the 2nd round pick of that same draft. Marc Wilson was the 15th and came from a pass first offense & Marijuanavich was the 24th pick. There’s obviously a big talent gap between a #1 and the other two.

Give the kid a chance, he’s from a good family, and he’s good people combined with all of his talent.

Quit using the ND as an excuse to bash JRuss.

  23. Charger Says:

lol Myopians. If the Raiders want respect they should try winning some games. You won 2 games last season and fired your head coach. In 2005 you won 4 games and fired your head coach. In 2004 you won 5 games. In 2003 you won 4 games and fired your coach. You scored 12 touchdowns on offense. LaDainian Tomlinson scored nearly three times that many on his own. You haven’t won a division game in two seasons. TWO SEASONS. You hired a college coach who has no NFL experience. You had the No. pick in the draft and your embarrassing owner/GM didn’t bother to negotiate with the player he chose before the draft, so now you’ve wasted that pick on a QB who isn’t close to being in camp. You have Andrew Walter and two rejects from two of last season’s worst teams vying to be your starter. And you complain that ESPN doesn’t respect you? lol What do you expect? Respect comes with winning. See if your team can manage to win a few games before you start complaining about a lack of respect. lol Myopians.

  28. Chris in NY Says:

Once we come out and smack some teams around don’t expect to hear Salsbury and those other goofballs at ESPN say they were wrong. They’ll try to leave the impression they knew it this team had turned it around all along. The fact ESPN is going to trot Tony Kornheiser out for a kindergarten-level analysis of Monday Night Football is proof enough very few people over there have a clue about the NFL.

RaiderDogg - here are some facts for you. 2001 - 36 tackles, six sacks. 2002 - 47 tackles, 7.5 sacks. 2003 - 43 tackles, 5 sacks. 2004 - 42 tackles, 2.5 sacks. 2005 - 32 tackles, 5 sacks. Hardly hall of fame numbers. I would call these stats average when you consider what a pushover he is against the run. combine this with the questionable character of a man who attempts to start a fight with Green Bay head coach after a game and constantly runs his mouth as if anyone other than his mama really cares what he says, and I say this is pretty good evidence of how overrated he really is. He was probably overlooked for the pro-bowl last year because everyone hates his ignorant guts as much as I do rather than because he played for a 2 - 14 team that was pathetic against the run because of his inadequacy. - Nuff said.

I kinda like HATER, at least he cares. He hates the Raiders and knows about them. Thats better than most sites like ESPN and crap. He uses clever analogies and is knowledgeable of our events.
Having said that he still is a charger fan meaning two things: Like his team, one cant climax and win a superbowl and the other cant make a woman…. win a superbowl. But your still funny.

  36. J-rOcK2118 Says:

did the official say he is close to signing?

  37. Raiderus Prime Says:

Good Lord… what a surprise. Mediots are such a joke it’s unbelievable. To think that Jerry actually thought that was the first time they had gotten together.

The franchise that hasn’t seen a holdout, not even a SINGLE DAY, since Rob Frederickson over a decade ago, suddenly can’t negotiate? Did all of the other picks not sign? Did Phil Rivers not sign until 8/24 the year he was drafted?

As usual, mediots making crap up to get a rise. Wonderful. It must be nice to have no integrity, standards or morals. Until you’re expired, that is.

  38. KoolKell Says:

The JR Haters disappeared after the draft, now their crawling out of the cracks again. lol. He’s got his work cut out for him, but I think he’s man enough to handle it.

The immediated correction by the PR staff indicates their a little edgy about their position. Feeling pressure maybe. I don’t want to set up a picket with sign JR signs, don’t push me Al ;-)

  41. The Chargers Suck AGAIN! Says:

It’s nice to know how much the Raiders are admired and studied by Charger fans. I guesss they see the writing on the wall and want to be ready to switch back to Raider lovers when it all starts to go down. The Chargers will go way down with that brilliant head coach , they just hired, that the Raiders FIRED a few years ago. Maybe these guys are really Norvy fans and not really Raider nor Charger fans at all. That’s it. They must look like Norvy. All ugly as sin with craters in their skin and teeth.
Norvy was born in Martinez and was brought up a Raiders fan. Norv won’t admit it publicaly, but he has always hated the San Diego Chargers. Still does even though he is currently employed by them. If Norvy doesn’t break the Chargers for us our defense will. lol

The Raiders will defeat the Chargers twice this year and I’ll be laughing my a@@ off each time…..

  42. johnnyswing Says:

All Charger fans should shut up and work the balls…

  43. gregp86 Says:

Is that a retraction, Jerry? Way to jump to conclusions without doing any fact checking. Better leave the negotiations reporting to Carl Steward, the axe you’ve got to grind is showing.

  44. Best in the west Says:

Man I heard that lil gamenight camp on the espn website wit jerry on it and he didn’t really represent like I thought he would. He sounded like another one of your typical raider hater. No diffrent from the bspn analyst he was talking too and he does nothing but cover the raiders..):

  45. Bill Says:

I’m a different bill than the one above.

I have got to say Metz’s crew, would be the last peopple I’d hire if I were a first round pick. This is beginning to be a bit rediculous.

  46. Don Says:

    Myopian

Obviously Charger learned a NEW word off of his DIXICUP while brushing his teeth
yesterday and can not stop saying it.

Just like any other three year old or minor bird would!

My understanding of the word is someone who is short sighted and can not see anything
beyond what is in front of him.

Most True Raider fans can see our past and cherish it, we see the present and agree that
IT SUCKED, and we SEE the possibillities of the future with a New HC and bringing new
players, It’s called hope and faith.

Whereas Charger, The True Myopian, can not see any farther back than LT, Rivers
    (another QB Holdout) and Marty.

Nor does he want to look to the future with NORV at the helm, looks pretty bleak doesn’t
    it?

    Keep the faith Nation
    Don from NY

  47. Raiderfanindonkycountry Says:

Tony Kornholer and homer would get along great. Stick to ballet and leave the grown
ups to talk football. J.R.’s close to signing I can feel it in the air. I’m In!

  48. Rick Wascher Says:

On the JR contract talks let’s remember we have a rookie negotiator that Kiffin brought in. I’m sure these contracts are more complicated that any at USC. This contract should have been done before the draft when JR and Brady Quinn both wanted the title of number 1 draft pick in 2007. Could have used that in leverage. That is why the Texans toook Williams. Couldn’t get bush to sign.

  49. SouthTexasRaider Says:

    jeremy, thats some funny schit!

  50. SILVER N BLACK BLOOD Says:

I will be glad when Jmac signs and we can focus on beating the donkeys and the gay Chargers . Besides Jmac does anybody have a opinion on who is going to be a standout Rookie for the Silver an Black?

  51. Raider Buck Says:

Zac Miller = Rookie standout. I really like this kid! I think he’s going to have a mojor impact this year!

  52. New Mexico Raider Says:

Hey Charger, Here’s some comic releif for you. Ryan leaf, Your safety Kiel getting busted for transporting cough syrup across the state. Foley drunk in public getting shot by off duty ploice officer. LT crying about the Pats doing the steriod shuffle after beating them in the playoffs. Merriman going to the probowl after getting busted for steriods. Firing your head coach after a winning season. And no championship rings to speak of. Now that’s funny!!!

Win,lose or tie Silver and Black till I die

  53. paul Says:

The media may be trying to ridicule the Raiders organization but I can assure you that every owner and GM in the NFL is hoping that the Raiders stand their ground. The last thing the league needs is a huge jump in rookie salaries because the Raiders cave to the demands of this kids agent. The agents are the problem. Just like the lawyers in society. Driving up the prices on everything from insurance to workmans comp. to putting criminals back on the streets. The agents get top dollar, which raises parking and season ticket prices and the cost of beer at the stadium. So the next time we are paying $9.00 for a beer that would cost you $1.59 at the liquor store downt the street from your house, you can think of J.ROCK and his agent. This whole thing with the rookies getting more money than PRO BOWLERS is a joke. We have ex-players who are struggling to pay their medical bills (from injuries sustained during their playing careers) and here we have Jamarcus Russell turning down $32million dollars and he hasn’t done jack diddly squat. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? The agents must die.

  54. Charger Says:

At least the Raiders can’t embarrass the NFL this year and get shutout twice on Monday Night Football. lol

  55. Joe Raider Says:

Charger seems to have short term memory loss. He has forgotten that SD was like 1-15,3-13,4-12,2-14,for the better part of 10 years. Until they drafted LT. They WERE able to draft LT as a result of finishing 1-15. Now Charger fans are smug ans smarmy, but the bottom is going to fall out of their house of cards with Norv Turner has HC. They may make the playoffs this year, but it’s all downhill from here. And I maintain if LT goes down, the Chargers are D-O-N-E. Btw Charger hows Ryan Leaf?Still coacjing high school ball while he draws a Charger paycheck? And As I recall your hero Phil Rivers engaged in a major-league hold out a couple of years ago and the Charger brain trust almost blew that deal, while simultaneously alienating Drew Brees, who had just goneto the Pro-Bowl. Yeah, the Chargers are the model franchise alright.

  56. paul Says:

Say all you want to about the CHARGERS. I hate them too. But they have now set the bar for the greatest draft move in the history of the NFL. With M.Vick making it all the way to the big house, it makes it even more evident. Chargers trade VICK’S SPOT FOR L.T. and some other junk to HOTLANTA. Talk about screwing the pooch ATLANTA. It use to be BO JACKSON in the 7th round by the RAIDERS. But the CHARGERS HAVE THE NEW BENCH MARK IN DRAFT DAY EXECUTION. I hate to say it but you must give it up…..Oh, by the way Charger fan, nice interception on 4th down. SPIDER PIG, SPIDER PIG, DOES WHATEVER A SPIDER PIG DOES>

  57. Charger Says:

Don’t forget about draft day 2004. Eli Manning for Philip Rivers, Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding. Pro Bowlers all three of them.

  58. Just Win Baby Says:

Keep in mind that these “mediots” you talk about are either former players ala Collinsworth, Jaworski, Schlereth, et al, or people who always wanted to be athletes but never had the skills to pull it off - Kornheiser, Clayton, this list goes on forever. In some way, both examples live vicariously through the current players. The ex-athletes who feel slighted because they thought they were the best ever and made less but always wanted more, and the analysts who will always dream of being what they never can. You can’t spell analyst without anal

  59. NorthernRaider Says:

Firstoff…Lay off Jerry for the apparently erroneous report re: Russell’s agents and Raiders negotiators meeting for the “first” time. Reporters have this thing called a deadline constantly hanging over their heads, and don’t have forever to fact-check and research info (Unless they’re doing a feature article). If the info had been correct and ESPN or some other source had beat Jerry to the punch, you’d be slagging him for getting scooped. There must be days where he wonders why he invests the time and effort to produce this blog for our enjoyment.
JustWinBaby…You forgot to include Sapp’s 10 sacks in 2006 in your analysis of his effectiveness. Must have been an oversight on your part. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to engage in innacurate and biased reportage.

  60. Just Win Baby Says:

I’m well aware of Sapps one good season since 2000.

  61. Just Win Baby Says:

I was challenged to support my theory that he is overrated and that is what I did.

  62. NorthernRaider Says:

JustWinBaby…By the way; While disagreeing with your assessment of Sapp’s value, I totally concur with your opinion of “expert” analysts like Kornheiser, etal. T.K. and Rich Eisen have to be two of the most obnoxious sports TV personalities in history. Perhaps they played the game back in the land of the little people?

  63. Just Win Baby Says:

Don’t forget Tom Jackson. He’s the worst Raider basher on TV.

  64. Mad Road Dog Says:

The Michael Vick senario could have happened in his rookie year. There are so many negative distractions to keep a rookie from performing up to his potential or any player for that matter. Which points out how dangerous it is to guarantee any kind of money to a rookie. We need to protect the future of NFL football. Make the rookies earn their money and insure the veterans are the ones who get the big money.

  65. Just Win Baby Says:

Roy Jones Jr. is defending Vick on ESPN right now. Isn’t he into cockfighting? Seriously, doesn’t he raise chickens for fighting? He probably isn’t the best guy for this.

  66. jh Says:

Jimmy Johnson when he was with the Cowboys pulled off the greatest trade of all time in the minds of most people and they have the rings to prove it . . . The Chargers don’t.

  71. Jay Says:

    Wait…

Did that moron momma’s boy actually make a point of mentioning a kicker as a probowler in the same breath as Steroid boy?? What a pathetic tool.

  72. NorthernRaider Says:

As for Tom Jackson; What can one expect from an old “orange crush” member? Although obnoxious at best, at least he played the game. It’s the mouthy dweebs who wouldn’t even be able to find a jock-strap small enough to wear who annoy me the most. Where’s Dan Pastorini when you need him? I’ll never forget the news footage of him slamming a yappy little scribe through the Oilers’ locker-room doors and pinning him down in the parking lot. This happened in the late ’70s. The mouthy little dork in question had just accused Dante of being soft and not playing through injuries. This after D.P. had played the AFC final against the Steelers wearing a flak jacket to protect cracked ribs! If not for a bad call negating a Mike Renfro TD late in the game, the Oilers likely would have gone on to the Superbowl. Anyone who’s ever had cracked ribs can understand the pain Pastorini must have played through.

  73. Charger Says:

Myopians: If you want respect, your team has to earn it by winning a few games.

Don’t lose at home to the likes of Cleveland and Houston. lol

Don’t get swept by all three of your division rivals for two seasons in a row.

Don’t get shut out every game that has a national audience.

Don’t draft a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick then fail to sign him.

Get it? Respect comes with winning, conducting business like a real pro franchise. lol

  74. Just Win Baby Says:

Which worst team are you speaking of? The bucs? That’s where he played his best ball. In th 90s in Tampa bay. 8 years ago. Go clean your bong mr 420, because what you’re smoking is making you stupid. He had 16.5 sacks in the 2000 season. 12 sacks in 1999. Then he WAS awesome, now he is just average. He had 6 average years before having 10 sacks last year. I predict he will return to his average form this year. I will do you “sensitive” types a favor and quit posting about Warren Crapp on this blog so you will quit crying about somebody having an opinion that differs from yours and you can look at your QB killa poster in your moms basement while you smoke up and avoid getting a job. He played 12 seasons and had sack totals in the double digits 4 times. This makes him a Great DT? The greatest of all time? No. I will give you Sapp lovers a temporary reprieve from my Warren Sapp comments because, quite frankly, I’m tired of beating this dead horse.

p.s. if Sapp was such a genius he would produce shirts and posters that read “Warren Crapp - 10 sacks was a fluke” instead of the QB killa shirts that I have NEVER seen anyone wear - ever. He would sell more to the demographic that proliferates the masses - people who agree that he is a clown.

  75. Eric the Raider Says:

We called this Sunday morning..Walter will be traded..and this Charger fan, boy I tell you, they’ve been on the bottom for so long the first thing they do is attack what’s kept them there for so long, the Silver and Black..hey, it isn’t our fault we have a winning HISTORICAL tradition with our team and not just some fairy three year run where everyone all of a sudden is Raider fans..no..and you still SUCK if you think about it, because the two times you have made the playoffs in the last EIGHT years, you lost in the playoffs, AT HOME, both times.! How can you look at yourselves as WINNERS when you can’t even represent you home field? The reason that happens is because the CHARGERS franchise has no history in big games and don’t have the expereince to overcome adversity (see L.T. after the NE loss), got players all crying and whining. No Charger fan, the example of overcoming adversity is getting robbed in front of f the world, like the Raiders did against New England in the “Tuck Rule” game, and dusting themselves off and going to the Super Bowl the next year; your idea of success is losing to the Patriots in the 1st round in 2006, and thinking that experience will help you get that ring..no, my friend…get out the first round first and then we’ll see, but you all will be back in last place, where you belong, before that happens..hell, all’s it will take is a 3 game losing streak and you’ll be back to the SAME OL CHARGERS, in last place
Since 2000: Raiders 12-4 (division champ/lost AFC CHAMPIONSHIP) Chargers 1-15
2001 Raiders 10-6 (division champ/advanced to divsion semifinals) Chargers 5-11
    2002 Raiders 11-5 (division champs/3 straigth Charger MORON/Super Bowl) Chargers 8-8
    2003 Raiders 4-12 Chargers 4-12
2004 Raiders 5-11 Chargers 12-4 (lost wild card playoffs/first round EXIT)
    2005 Raiders 4-12 Chargers 9-7 (didn’t make playoffs)
2006 Raiders 2-14 Chargers 14-2 (LOST AT HOME IN FIRST PLAYOFF GAME)
So since 2000, the Raiders have 48 wins to your silly Chargers 53..5 more wins than us this decade, and you STILL didn’t have the success that WE had in the playoffs this decade…can you all win a playoff game at least instead of having a great regular season and have it crap on your postseason?

  76. Raidergeorge Says:

I like the proposal I read in yesterdays SI article an Raider fan asked Peter King what is
the possibilty of us trading Jamoney Russel to Atlanta for their first round pick in 08 and if Culpepper works out we can sign him during the offseason to a longer contract if he
doesnt we will probably have a top 10 pick from Atlanta and we can draft either
Brian Brohm of Louisville or Colt Brenan of Hawaii at a more reasonable price.

How many out there in the nation would like to see this happen I for one…

damn son hostile, talk about having an opinion that differs from yours, tell me how you really feel

i do believe winning 2 games, and having the worst offense of the modern era, can qualify the 2006 raiders as the worst team he played for.

look at a guy like randy moss, quit on his team, sapp didnt quit. he exceeded, and he is a leader on that defense, but since he has an opinion YOU cry

  79. Just Win Baby Says:

worst team - yes, His best football? not even close.

Some facts for Chargerless: San Diego all time W/L record 350-367-11….Playoff record 7-13…H2H vs Raiders 38-54-2….H2H Raiders playoffs 0-1. Last playoff win ‘94 and 0-1 Super Bowls.

Now the Myopic Raider franchise numbers: All time W/L 421-319-11…Playoffs 25-18…H2H vs Chargeless 54-38-2…Playoffs vs Chargeless 1-0…Last Playoff win ‘02….3-2 Super Bowl record…

Oh and this little tidbit from Wikipedia:
    San Diego Sports Curse
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Jump to: navigation, search
The San Diego Sports Curse or simply the San Diego Curse, is a mythical explanation for San Diego’s inability to win a Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals or any other major league sports championship in the United States.

Because of the lack of a championship, and the city’s population, San Diego has the distinction of being the largest city in the United States to have never won a Major League Sports championship.[1] Furthermore, San Diego has one of largest sports championship droughts in all of the United States, only winning the AFL championship in 1963.[2]

Unlike other “curses” that seem to strike particular teams (the Boston Red Sox’s Curse of the Bambino, the Chicago White Sox’s Curse of the Black Sox – both of which seem to have been lifted, and the Chicago Cubs’ Curse of the Billy Goat), this evil is said to have struck all professional teams in the city and county of San Diego (much like Philadelphia’s Curse of Billy Penn). Neither the San Diego Padres nor the San Diego Chargers has ever won a championship. Nor has any other major sports team that has resided in San Diego (the Clippers and the Rockets) done so while located there. Furthermore, San Diego does not have an NHL team nor an NBA team, making it harder for the city to break the long running problem of being the largest American city without a championship.

The cause of the curse is unknown although one explanation offered for the curse is the trade of wideout Lance Alworth to the Dallas Cowboys[3], which is similar to Boston’s Curse of the Bambino, as the flip side of the curse was the Cowboy’s success after the sale, from becoming a team that seemed to be a perennial loser in championship games over the previous five seasons (the Ice Bowl, Super Bowl V) to a team that won the Super Bowl during his first season in Dallas (and has won 5 Super Bowls overall), as well as the distinction of being “America’s Team”, while the Chargers were sent into a huge championship drought, although that wouldn’t explain why all San Diego teams are cursed (the trading of Bambino cursed just the Red Sox, not the Patriots, Celtics, or Bruins, as they all have dynasties in their respective leagues).

No official name has been established by anyone for all of San Diego’s misery and heartbreak, hence the name San Diego Sports Curse.

Chargerless come back and play when A: your team reaches .500 ball vs the Raiders and/or the overall record….B: when your team wins a playoff game. Hope you enjoyed this miniscule little win streak vs the Raiders ’cause it’s gonna be over soon!

  83. Omniscience Says:

Did any one read the article in Fox sportspage claiming that the top paid S,WR,and OL
In the league were all rookies coming out of this year draft and never played a down
In the N.F.L and all the G.M were saying that it needed to change well looks like
Big Al has to be the one to make change again. So before all you start hating
on Al and the Raiders on these negotiations remember Al is always the one setting the
standard. From moving teams all he wanted was luxry suites he seen future in stadiums.
to signing the best free agents not his fault they dont perform to merging leauges as I
said the League is what it is because Al Davis I did not metion 1st Black,Hispanic Head
Coaches, 1st women Head of operations now youngest coach need to say more.

  84. RaiderDogg Says:

    Hey Just Win Baby -

All you have done here is validate my point, whether you realize it or not. Sapp is a future hall of famer hands down. Your pathetic attempt at “selective” stats shows that you only use stats that “work” for you, until someone calls you out and then you provide the good stats that “work” for you then. You are entitled to your opinion, as am I. It just so happens that most people up on here agree with me and not you because I don’t “massage” stats one way or the other to try and win an argument. I just tell it like it is. Most people on here will tell you that. I also don’t resort to shameless, immature name calling and insults when someone either disagrees with me or proves me wrong. I get it, you hate Sapp. Good for you. That doesn’t change a thing about Sapp and having the most sacks by a DT in NFL history. There’s not much that you can say to change the facts in this case. The bottom line is numbers do not lie. Nice try though…

    Raiders for Life…I’m In!

  85. SJRaider Says:

I’m getting sick of this talk about Sapp. You don’t don’t like his personality. Fine. But you are letting it mess with your evaluation of his performance.

As anyone who knows football will tell you, you can’t really evaluate a DT unless you know what he is asked to do (one gap, two gap, etc..), and for some positions, such as Nose tackles, they arnt expected to produce sacks or tackles, merely take up OL, plug holes, and let other players make plays.

Sapp, when playing his right postion IS expected to penetrate, and produce sacks and put pressure on a QB. For that type of position, 6 sacks a year will put you in the top 10 DT in terms of sacks the league. Lets say there are 30 starting DT’s that are expected to play a pernetrating roll. That would put Sapp, with 6 sacks as a top 33% player. Not average. Also, for this type of player, Sapp usually produces comparable or more tackles than others.

Also, you assert he isn’t a HOF player…look at the stats you cite as his being an average player. The years you choose to cite don’t evidence HOF credentials, but they are pretty productive, and would merit a starting place on almost every team. The only “bad” season is 2004 where he was moved out of position. 2005 he moves back, and produce well (not pro bowl, but pretty good) and 2006 really picked back up. With his previous production, and the production last year, he is sure to make it. He will likely end his career in excess of 100 sacks.

  86. RaiderDogg Says:

Thank you SJRaider. Another voice of reason coming through loud and clear. Keep up the good work.

    Raiders for Life…I’m IN!

  87. SJRaider Says:

dogg, as you can see im responding to Just Win Baby, not to you.

  88. HOWIE 75 Says:

    1) Qb’s ratings for the preseason games….. Pepp 113.4 %, Walter 74.2%, Josh M 66.0%… Pepp has been doing well, this game will be his most difficult test yet, Starting QB, vs a good pass rush in STL!

    2) The Atlanta situation… I don´t think a JR trade is even likely (nor want it to be)… Atlanta is interested in Jm or AW…, but I think when JR signs… we will probably trade AW, Atlanta wants a new kid with a future (and probably a not to expensive one), not journeyman JM.

    3) $hit, promised myself wouldn´t do this…. but…. hey charger momma’s boy….. it´s logical fort teams to go up and down in the standings, it’s the way the league is designed… name one team that hasn´t!….. REAL WINNERS (much like men) are created over time…….. FLUKES (much like little boys)…. are born every day!……Yes your Chargers are a good team now… or I can say where a good team, now that idiot Turner is the coach…. still they’ll do fine for a while… but the decline has started… The Raider Organization…..has always been good, that’s what dynasties are all about… SF, DALLAS, OAK, PITT….. unlike your dolts.. SD can´t even be mentioned on the same breath as the above…. yes a couple of seasons here and there… but ultimately a So-So if not bad organization…….. we really got screwed with the carrear injury to our superb QB Gannon… and did not have the time to prepare properly, therefore we´ve sucked for 3 years….. but again… the ascent has started!

So momma’s boy … jumble that through your dazzed and cofused brain for a while, make your bed, have your mommy prepare you your Fantastic 4 lunch box, go to school and play with some GI Joes or semething, and don´t forget to check your pull ups and if you find some $hit in them…. do us all a favor and eat it!!! Grow some ball$ Get your own place!, Get a Job!, Become a Man! Let the grown ups talk about football!!! and maybe, just maybe… some day when you’re all grown up you can join THE RAIDER NATION…. A TEAM FOR ALL DECADES!!!

  89. SJRaider Says:

Just for the record, I like Sapp on the Raiders. You can bet when the D stuck together Sapp was the glue, keeping the energy high, praising his guys, making playing a thing of pride! Also, dogg, thanks for keeping it clean. In your defense of sapp…this is what the board is about…discussion.

  90. TAKE THAT CHARGER BOY Says:

LOL….. wow…. HOWIE 75….. that was the best post I have read all day!!!
LOL again…Thanks for the info on the QB ratings!
    I´m IN!

  91. Papajohn Says:

Chargers are on the way down….fast….they are MORONS for firing the NAZI, and hiring crater face….what were they thinking? Queefs will be average at best, and the Donkeys will be 8-8…….watch and see…..Culpepper will start, and when he gets hurt, Russell will step in and do fine….Just like Vince Young did….Sapp is ABOVE average, and he is a MOTIVATOR and does not get down when the season SUCKED….Anyone on our team that will be better than him? ANyone? He is good for this team, I dont know why people bash him. I hated Romanowski for the longest time, till he put on the silver and black, and he did AWESOME, especially against his former team….get off Sapps nuts

  92. Dolts have no championships Says:

Chargers have zero championships; they got their ass handed to them in their house by the patsies. It was great watching them do the fool dance that your roided up lb invented on your field. Marty ball has always failed in the playoffs (see Chiefs) Norve is a huge step back and it will be fun to see his undisciplined brand of foolsball destroy the Dolts from the inside out this year. No Championships, not now not ever!!!

  93. TAKE THAT CHARGER BOY Says:

Hey charger boy…. where are you…. comebacks are suppose to be quick….. LOL!

  95. LooneyRaider Says:

Howie 75, that was beautiful man! But like I’ve stated before, he’s like a fly. He won’t go away until you kill it. It is humerous that it refers to the Raider fans in this blog as myopians, when clearly it is the definition of a myopian.

  96. La Milicia Negra Says:

hey guys have you noticed its only raiderguys ranting about chargers, yes how bad they are, but still, its ‘us’ ranting about them. have you heard the word radio silence…

Lets keep it to raider stuff, please =)

Howie point 1 & 2, nice =) but if Petrino gets his hands on AW, AW will go to the probowl in 2-3 years time

  98. SGT. O RAID Says:

Thanks for that Chad E. Hey charger, check this . As most Raider fans know whenever the Raiders play in The old Jack MUFF Stadium it is ALWAYS A RAIDER HOME GAME ! Even now as the Raiders lost many games in our worst season ever we the RAIDER Faithful kept going down to the games at the old Muff . I have known more lame fair-weather charger-less fans than any other team . I have sat with former charger fans who went with us to Qualcom in RAIDER gear !!!! You can NEVER find ONE RAIDER fan who would even consider that !!!! I HAVE CONVERTED A few charger fans and Had them rooting for the RAIDERS . Now some Fair-weather fans have opted to side with the powder n yellow again (temporarily). DOES THAT MAKE THEM bi ? REAl MEN WEAR BLACK ! Win or loose we are always die hard Raider faithful ! Oh and the RAIDERS will most likely get another ring before the shhhhargers … Myopians: If you want respect, your team has to earn it by winning more than just a few games , they need to at least win in the play-offs hmmm maybe get a ring first !!!! Manning in 2004 hmmm ? You see Raider fans are always hard core and always true to there Nation the SILVER AND BLACK !!! Hope to see you this year at another RAIDER HOME GAME IN San Diego !!!!! The autumn wind is a RAIDER Pillaging just for fun !!!

  99. RAIDER 4 EVER! Says:

SORRY GUYS…. I never talk back to that idiot, and never will again….just had to get it of my system… still LOL though… about Walter… I still belive he is good, just needs a shot with a decent line and some experience… but if we sign JR… the kid has to get a chance somewhere else, don´t want another Tui on our hands.

  100. Radlady Says:

Homer GO PLAY ON THE FREEWAY, AND TAKE YOUR BS WITH YOU

  101. HOWIE 75 Says:

YEAH…I agree, don´t worry about it Raider 4 Ever… I to cleared my chest…. but as La Milicia Negra says… lets ignore everything charger… keep this blog with good Raider Information only… and usefull comments!

  102. HOWIE 75 Says:

Hey Milicia Negra… what do you think we can get for AW in a trade with Atlanta?

  103. HOWIE 75 Says:

Thanks for the props looneyraider… had fun writing that last paragraph, glad you enjoyed it!

  104. SGT. O RAID Says:

Sorry La Malicia Negra …. I agree with keeping it Raider (it must have been the Autumn wind blowing thru ) I agree that Al should have worked on the J.R. deal smarter and I/we hang on news of a signing so that I/we can see what our #1 pick can pick up this year . Omniscience mentioned the Fox article and yes it is wise of the Raiders and benefits all of the N.F.L. however it frustrates us to not see him in practice .

  105. Just Win Baby Says:

Selective stats? Stats are stats. I don’t make them up. I stated I was done bringing Sapp up here. Dont
bit@h about me wanting to write about it here in one breath and then keep bringing the issue up in the next. Your inconsistency is ridiculous.

  106. RaiderDogg Says:

    Just Win Baby -

I never b!tched about anything bro. Get a grip. My point was that you chose to share one set of stats that suited your argument at the time and then you chose to reveal the remainder of his career stats when it suited your new argument. Inconsistency has only been demonstrated on your part hence my explanation previously. I have been nothing but consisitent since day one on this blog. My apologies if you misunderstood what I thought I made perfectly clear. Take a deep breath and just let it go man.

  113. necropolis Says:

“The official, who preferred his name not be used. said Kiffin probably meant to infer that it was the first face-to-face meeting recently, rather than at all.”

Anyone who isn’t a moron could’ve figured this out.

  114. Raider Ray Says:

ROFLMAO - I stoped reading comments when dumbass (err I mean charger) pointed out we won 2 games and “fired our coach”. Wow what a revelation from someone whose team won 14 games and FIRED THEIR COACH. If you want to talk about “winning some games”, let’s about 3 superbowl rings compared to your teams ZERO. Don’t you have some San Diego fan site to visit, or are you really so miserable a person that you have to come here and hate. Because honestly you sound like a 12 year old. And isn’t if funny that we fired a coach 2 years ago, because he was quite incompetent, and the Chargers picked up our retread. It’s really really funny how myopic you really are.

  115. new england raider Says:

Howie and chad-great posts. Im too tired for anything creative. But as i read about the falcons showing interest in walter i have this feeling of…i dont know, back off hes raider property kinda thing. ive always liked walter and such a bum deal he got last yr. Looks like pepper is the starter, least till russell comes in (i still predict mid to late season). Not a bad place for walter to be, behind joey. walter is much better and should get the starting job there if hes traded.

  116. Kenneth Osborn Says:

Hey Charger. Yes the Raiders are down for a while, but not for long. Yes the Chargers are on one of their every other decade runs. But this to will soon past, just like the others. Buy the way, how many Super Bowl trophies do the Chargers have in their trophy case. Can you count to O to O.

  117. new england raider Says:

im taking the raider D in fantasy football. Its absurd that though they were a top 3 D last yr most have them ranked in bottom half. no respect. with the improved pass rush and further development of huff, washington and howard i expect many more interceptions and sacks. with a better line and darious i expect more fumbles as well. I have the 1st pick and LT is available but…i just dont think i can stomach it even holding my nose.

  118. CHAMP Says:

HOWIE GOOD CALL. ALL I GOT TO SAY, I LIVE CLOSE TO SAN DIEGO AND HAVE BEEN TO MANY RAIDER CHARGER GAMES. I CAN SWEAR IM IN OAKLAND SINCE OUR RAIDER FANS WIN OR LOSE FULL OF PRIDE OUT NUMBER THESE SO CALLED CHARGER FANS. ALL THE WAY FROM ONE POINT OF CALI TO THE OTHER HOW CAN THIS BE? BAND WAGON JUMPERS? I JUST DONT KNOW, BUT TO ALL YOU HATERS WHO NO NOT THE HISTORY OF OUR FRANSHISE UMMM SHUT UP, SIMPLE RIGHT. BUT YET YOUR ON OUR SITES. *Firstoff…Lay off Jerry for the apparently erroneous report re: Russell’s agents and Raiders negotiators meeting for the “first” time. Reporters have this thing called a deadline constantly hanging over their heads, and don’t have forever to fact-check and research info (Unless they’re doing a feature article).

This isn’t the 1st time this “pro football writer” has screwed the pooch THIS PRE SEASON!

And as a PROFESSIONAL and a constant “Inside” writer for the Raiders, you’d expect him to KNOW about our #1 draft pick.

    WE DID.

*If the info had been correct and ESPN or some other source had beat Jerry to the punch, you’d be slagging him for getting scooped. There must be days where he wonders why he invests the time and effort to produce this blog for our enjoyment.

    Written by Jerry himself.

I’d tell you you suck Jerry, but you manage to prove that at least once just about every month.

    By the way!

Did you know we have a new Coach?

  120. The, Jerry,The Says:

    How bout this,

Curry looks wickedly agile in limited action. Porter is non existant as is usual pre season stand out Johhnie Morant.

Madsen, Miller AND Stewrat are making catches at TE.

Gallery is DOMINATING at Left Guard. Cornell Green is getting toasted at Right Tackle.

There, run with it and try not to f it up.
