Narrowing the field

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, August 27th, 2007 at 3:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.

While much of the outside world views Daunte Culpepper as the inevitable Week 1 quarterback for the Raiders, coach Lane Kiffin seems to be indicating Josh McCown rates a 50-50 chance of being the starter.

McCown, in fact, will start Thursday night in Seattle against the Seahawks.

“It’s become a two-man race with Daunte and Josh,” Kiffin told reporters Monday following practice. “We’ll let both guys play in this game. Josh will go first. I don’t have the exact number of reps for you. We’ll play it by ear.”

Culpepper has shown better-than-expected mobility and exhibited signs of at least being something similar to the quarterback who passed for 4,717 yards with 39 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions for the Minnesota Vikings in 2004.

Then again, Culpepper has played in 11 games since 2004 _ seven before he suffered a serious knee injury and four more with Miami to begin last season. In those games, Culpepper threw eight touchdown passes, 15 interceptions, fumbled eight times and was sacked 52 times.

Kiffin is not interested in any before and after scenario. He is looking at Culpepper only as he has performed since signing with the Raiders on July 31.

“It doesn’t mean anything to me,” Kiffin said. “It doesn’t because that’s not our system. That’s not today. We’re going to judge people based on the day we got here, the day he’s gotten here, that’s what we’re judging him on.”

Culpepper, who has done very few interviews other than one on the day he arrived and then after games, politely declined to speak with the media.

McCown said he doesn’t look at himself as an underdog even if it seems that way from the outside.

“From a public perception standpoint it may be that way because of the success that Daunte’s had, but for me, at the same time, I got here before him, so I got a little bit of a jump on him as far as learning the offense,” McCown said.

Monday’s practice marked the first time that Andrew Walter, now the No. 3 quarterback, had reduced repetitions in practice.

“You have to realize, when you tell players and when you sit down and talk to players and tell them your honest opinion, you don’t expect them to agree,” Kiffin said. “They’re not going to agree most of the time at all because they’re always going to have a good opinion of themselves. Was he happy? I’m sure he wasn’t happy. But he’s proved people wrong before and he’s the type to do that again.”

Walter, Kiffin said, has improved a great deal since his first minicamp in the new offense.

“I remember the first day we had him, he went with the first group out here and I think he completed about three balls in that first 7-on-7 we had,” Kiffin said. “He was all over the place. This is not a reflection of Andrew playing poorly. This is a reflection of the other guys _ in my opinion _ giving us a better chance to win.”

News and notes:

– Zach Miller is getting no breaks lately. Both John Madsen (hamstring) and Tony Stewart (back) were out of practice Monday, with Miller and James Adkisson getting all the work at tight end.

O.J. Santiago has also missed the last two practices with a hamstring injury.

Madsen said the rest was precuationary and expects to face Seattle Thursday. Kiffin also expressed concern that Madsen, a converted wide receiver, is down a few pounds and and needs to regain some bulk.

– Rookie Johnnie Lee Higgins, who went to the hospital Sunday for some tests on a pain in his side, was back at practice Monday, reporting no pain.

– Tommy Kelly will be the Raiders starting right defensive end, Kiffin said, joining Warren Sapp, Terdell Sands and Derrick Burgess on the defensive line. Kelly will be available to move inside as matchups dictate.

The move means sleek rookie end Quentin Moses will likely be broken in as a pass rush specialist.

– Safety Donovin Darius did not practice and his appearance in the Seattle game appears unlikely.

Although McCown and Culpepper will get extended time, Kiffin said many starters will be out of the game after a single series, with the rest of the roster fighting for spots on the final 53.

Teams must arrive at a 53-man roster Saturday.

Kiffin was serious when he said McCown was still in the race. I like the competition coming down to the wire and it gives me more reason to be excited to watch a normally worthless 4th preseason game. I like Kelly at DE especially on run downs. Our run D should be improved with the added bulk of Sands starting and Kelly at DE. I love it, I’M IN!!!!!!

  2. Ryan Says:

Kiffin keeps saying all the right things! What’s up with JR?

  3. Paulie V Says:

I REALLY hope McClown isn’t our starting qb.

  4. papiraider Says:

Any news on Russell? I dont recall such a lengthy holdout in the last 10 years….What´s with this guy and the front office? Not much has been talked about this situation besides one blog last week. Hope we sign him this week or trade him to atlanta soon. This is getting embarassing. Daunte would be our starting QB but most of you guys including Jerry have not talked about his LIMP when he runs and walks! He is obviously not 100% and I wonder why that hasn´t got any attention. It seems like he wouldn´t last a complete game. In my opinion Mccown will start by default because Walter is still shell shocked form last year and Culpepper is still not 100%. Im so glad we picked Daunte in the offseason. He gives us a lot of depth and hope as our 2nd QB.

  5. papiraider Says:

By the way who were the other 3 cuts? We have to cut 3 more by today….

  6. Black Hole Occupant Says:

    JUST WIN BABY!!!!!!!!

  7. Shawnraiders81 Says:

Of course Kiffin is giving Mcown a shot, it keeps the competition going strong and brings out the best in everyone. Daunte will ne the starting qb week one, no doubt in my mind. Mcown is very good and mobile, But Daunte is a general on the field. And I would walk with a little limp after having major knee reconstruction like him. Im sure his knee gets stiff alittle when playing. Anyway our offense is light years ahead of the Tom Walsh era! Go Raiders!

  8. Shawnraiders81 Says:

    LoL its McCown!

  9. Chris in NY Says:

I’ve been supporting McCown all along on this message board and I’m glad to see Kiffin hasn’t folded to public/media assumptions that Culpepper would start all along. What we want is the guy who gives this team the best chance to win right now — not the guy who has sold the most jerseys or been to the most Pro Bowls or whatever in the past. Based on their preseason play, if you’ve watched with an open mind, it is a tough call.
Culpepper was very shaky the last two seaons and vs. Arizona in the first preseason game, but has improved and looked good in each of the last two games. McCown is more mobile at this point, brings a lot of emotion/intangibles and was near-perfect throwing the ball vs. StL, but his throws have been inconsistent in other preseason games.

It’s a tough call. Neither guy looks perfect but each has the potential to be very, very good. I really like Kiffin’s approach and independent attitude in making this decision.

How long did the Charger QB (brain freeze) hold out his rookie year?

Glad to hear Walter is not in the race.

    Walter = O Canada!

cahragers qb philip rovers didnt hold out?

  13. Nodaclu Says:

The writing was on the wall with that one after the Rams game, in which Walter was only given 8 minutes in garbage time.

Too bad, I like the guy. He’s now the obvious man out when JR signs. I hope the Raiders send him to a team that could really use him.

This two man race isn’t as cut and dry as one might think. Even though the Raiders line has improved, you can’t expect it to do a “worst to first” thing. In other words, even if improved, it’s still probably going to be average at the absolute best. Culpepper’s going to get hit and get hit hard at various points during the season.

McCown’s going to play, the only question is how much. The odds of a guy coming back from THREE ligament tears and lasting through an entire 16 game season with a rebuilding team is frankly, pretty slim.

At least this way, Kiffin is maximizing snaps for both, in the hope that McCown can step right in if needed, and the offense won’t fall off the cliff as a result.

This kid’s pretty smart. It’s going to be fun watching Kiffin grow right along with his team.

  14. La Milicia Negra Says:

If McCown is wins the starting job, expect Culpepper to be shiped outta town, he is way too expensive to sit on the bench, he is cheap untill reg-season starts

NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reports the Raiders have released WR Doug Gabriel.

  18. La Milicia Negra Says:

WR Doug Gabriel, Bilichick didn’t like him, Kiffin neither?!

  19. marcus Says:

so who out there in raiderland feels a bit stupid for claiming McCown sucks! on this website. I warned you boys that you might be cheering for him or Walter come gametime. I am happy for Kiffin that he is letting the chips fall where they may. now, if he wuld just rid me of the sight of Norval’s bust, Lamont dancing with stars in his eyes…

  20. marcus Says:

to me, football is a running game. don’t really give a damn about QB’s ’til the last drive . you run the ball you win. you can’t, you lose. westcoast dump passes are only slightly different than a running play. the defensive lineman don’t get as worn down.

  21. I dress in black Says:

i dunno MC’s arm strength or lack of bothers me. La Millica has a point about the cost of DC and lets not forget Al’s endorsement of him comparing him to Plunket.

  22. I dress in black Says:

sorry for the bad pronoun usage… ‘lets not forget Al’s endorsement comparing him to Plunket.’

  23. Cruzin Says:

We couldn’t trade Doug Gabriel for a 7th round pick?

  24. Dick V Says:

Al Davis was recently quoted saying he likens Dc to Plunkett in that he needs time to heal and rest after being injured: he doesn’t see him taking over the reigns right off the back. Obviously Kiffen will have a lot of say, but I think Kiffen has to be bothered about the fumbles and DC’s fumble prone history: 80 fumbles in 85 or so games of which 35 or so were recovered by the other team.

Give DC a few weeks to ride the time, Let McCown loose the job or keep it, and go to DC when you have to make a change. I don’t envision Mccown starting the whole season, but as I have said repeatedly each of the first for home games could trigger him being benched. All four of those games are must wins for QB like McCown who will presumably have an Ex- league MVP, and a NO.1 overall pick waiting in the wings. If McCown looses to the Lions, Browns, Cheifs, or Texans, his season is over. If he wins all those the Raiders will be at the very least 4-4 and be very competitive.

  25. PeterG67 Says:

I still think it is DC’s job to lose on thurs.
I think Kiff is trying to keep from looking like he is following anyone elses plan, which I like, but also, he’s only had his hands on Dc for a month and that isn’t very long to get a QB up to speed.
Overall, regardless of who QB’s. I like this Coach!
    I’m In!
    See you on the 9th.

  26. j-rock2118 Says:

mind games kiffin is not going to let the media dictate him he goinmg to make it think its a two man race which i belive its is i think its mcowons to lose if he messes up culppeper will start simmilar to hte Kc games croyle messed up and huard got the nod to start week 1

  27. Alvis Whitted Says:

Not naming a starter yet also forces the Lions and other opposing D’s to gameplan for 2 possibilities at QB with distinct styles of play.

  28. JT Koby Says:

I do think that Kiffen is playing a bit of a mind game in this situation. It’ll be much tougher for Detroit to gameplan two QBs rather than focus on just one style.

As much as I’ve jumped onto the Daunte bandwagon, there’s strong argument to let McNown start the season against the Lions. Not only does he have significantly more time with the Raiders system, he also has the chip on the shoulder playing against his old team.

However, by week four, Daunte should be the starter. Not only is the field general, he is the best example for JR and that, my friends, is where our eyes should be. I don’t see Culpepper here for more than the year (which could be a disappointment)…but after we finally sign a $32M deal…there’s no way Al lets him sit on the bench for three more years.

Too bad we didn’t know about Daunte back in April. It would have been nice to see him throwing to Charles Johnson…

    Just Win, Baby!

  29. 1960AutumWind Says:

A guess and thats all it is…

I am begining to think Kiffin says what he means and means what he says. Whether JM star or not is going to depend on his performance on Thursday. If he plays like he did against Arizona then he won’t if he plays like he did against the 49ers or the Rams he will. As long as JM looks doable I think he will start because DC still needs some time. If JM falters then watch for a switch especially after the bye week. If JM stinks it up against Seattle DC will be pressed into starting if he looks good.

I am still wondering what will happen with JR. A person re-entering the draft has only happned a few times but I do not see the Raiders caving in if they have 2-3 capable QBs. So far I also do not see JR caving in at all eighter. AD can afford DC and JM and AW if there is no JR. In fact they are cheap by NFL standards.

  30. Charger Says:

Myopians. The old man passed on Leinart and Cutler last year. Passed on Brady Quinn and Calvin Johnson this year. Hired a college coordinator to be head coach. It’s the last week of August and your No. 1 pick still isn’t signed. It must suck to be a fan of the silver and bleak right now. You have my sympathy. lol

  31. raider 76 Says:

I never seen plunkett have trouble holding on to the ball like coldpecker does. Al must of not seen coldpecker play in miami fumbled every game he played u honestly think he has fixed the problem i dont think so. start Mc Cown I’m In

  32. Huff24 Says:

The Raiders-Rams game will replay tonight at 9pm Pacific Time on NFL Network. I was unable to see the game and only able to get updates from my brother so it is hard for me to give an opinion but it sounds like Walter deserves to be the 3rd QB. Culpepper has proven that he is ready to start if needed so its imperative that McCown get one more look at before the start of the regular season. I think McCown starting the last game is a chance for the coaching staff to confirm there thoughts that Culpepper should be the starter. McCown also played in the first preseason game and everyone was probably rusty so they get to see McCown play with a group that has worn off the rust. Sounds like McCown has progressed over the 3 game span.

  33. jeremy Says:

We are looking at an opportunity for McCown not to blow, similar to how Croyle sucked it up last week. If McCown can play sharp, make smart decisions, and not turn the ball over then he should be given the chance. However, DC has shown he’s a leader and can pull the team together unlike McCown.

I agree DC needs to learn the playbook to play in a regular season game, however he’s a smart dude and should be able to grasp a lot of the playbook in the next 2 weeks.

As for JRuss, there’s no way he’ll be in the draft next season. He stands to lose millions if he goes back in. No way would a team draft in the top 5 when you consider he’s been out of football for a year. He’ll sign for the $31m he’s been offerred as soon as the season starts or risk a reduction of total amount on a weekly basis.

Al’s using JRuss as an example and he’ll take his experience this year with JRuss to the owners and players union and do something about the nonsense regarding rookie contracts. I bet we’ll see some type of agreement within the next two years or the owners will have a lockdown until something is agreed upon.

  34. LVRAIDER Says:

I read that Peter King with SI said that JR does not want to play for the raiders.
That he does not wnt to play for “team turmoil” or on a team with such a “leaky line”.

  35. LVRAIDER Says:

I’m with the bloggers that say try to trade his rights to Atlanta. Its not like the
Raiders are offering this guy peanuts. From what I read there offering him the
richest contract in rookie history. I don’t know about you guys but it sounds
like this guy JR could be alot more trouble than hes worth

  36. j-rock2118 Says:

c’mon i hate to say this but charger fans were not saying trade rivers ecause he signed around this time and look at we has become dont worry the deall should get done this week worst case scenerio on monday next week and the hell star the learning i belive he was held out of traing camp on purpose so that he dosent take reps away from mcown and culppepper so as a raider nation lets blame metz and not russell and lets stop with the trade his rights

  37. Huff24 Says:

Joey Harrington has actually looked pretty good but they don’t have any depth. They have the trade bait necessary to get JR since they traded Schaub to the Texans for some high picks. The only way the Falcons could get JR is if JR and the Falcons could agree to a contract otherwise, it would be pointless for both sides. JR may look at the Falcons as a team in turmoil as well with the whole Michael Vick thing. I think JR would be a good fit with the Jaguars with the type of QB’s and system they have and Jack Del Rio isn’t happy with his QB’s and has been looking elsewhere with Culpepper being one of those guys he coveted and offered a contract. Culpepper and JR are similar so it could be a possibility.

  38. Huff24 Says:

I think we can all agree that if JR signs, Walter could be trade bait considering his current status on the roster. If JR signed soon, then we would hold 4 QB’s until right before the trade deadline in week 6. We could then trade him away to clear a roster spot and a team would probably need some QB help after some early injuries.

  39. George Says:

JR must not be the sharpest knife in the draw. He stands to loose a lot of money. But what the heck, we can win without him. DC all the way.

  40. LVRAIDER Says:

Jrock, so you think we should put this money in an option bonus and if JR pulls a
mike vick or just decides to hold out we should pay him? You think 6 year 66 million
with 31 million gauranteed, the richest contract in rookie history, is not enough? Do you also think that if he truely does not want to play for the raider as it has been reported we should still sign him? This is COMPLETELY different than the Rivers situation.

  41. Kirk Says:

Trade Jamarcus Russell for Atlanta’s first and second round pick next year. We already have three quarterbacks.

  42. LVRAIDER Says:

All money and option bonuses aside, if JR does not truely want to play for the Raiders than I dont want him!!!

  43. jeremy Says:

NO WAY WILL JRUSS GET TRADED OR GO BACK INTO THE DRAFT!!!

JRuss has a ton of talent, but there was no way Kiffen was going to allow him to start the season even if he signed before the draft. He’s a little raw given he only started two seasons but only lost 3 games.

He’s going to sit the year because that’s what’s necessary. Palmer, McNair, and Culpepper all sat a year. Was this bad for their development? If JRuss ends up as good as Palmer will you agree sitting him for a year wasn’t a bad idea?

Obviously we need a QB and may have one, but until we know what our O line looks like, there’s no way JRuss should even think about being a pinata. A year for the line to gel and he can come in to a much better situation for a first year starter. We can’t mess with his head and have him lose his confidence.

  44. Raiders Rain Says:

A healthy Dante Culpepper is the Raiders best bet when it comes down to the chance of winning games. We need a veteran QB who can scramble, one that can get out of harms way when other teams bring in the house. Who knows how good the line will be this season. Walter never had a chance to get the ball off last season because of the line, he was on the ground so many times that my little son thought that was how the game was suppose to played. The Raiders won games when Gannon was here because of his ability to shake these fools, and guess what? Dante has that same ability.

  45. Rick Dillinger Says:

I understand Kiffin not wanting to name the starter, but I believe he is stalling. Culpepper will be named the starter and we all know this. He is being loyal to Josh because he thought he would be the starter beore camp. I don’t think it will hurt Daunte, I believe it will help. I am talking about him backing up Josh in Seattle. This will prove Culpepper has more skill than Josh and we have to face the fact of this. I believe Daunte gives us a better chance to win. P.S. We should have taken Brady Quinn, I know what you are thinking. I am not on the band wagon. I wanted Quinn fron the start. EARLY PREDICTION! OAKLAND 24 DENVER 20 (YES, A DIVISION VICTORY!)

    somebody apparently agrees with me…

    ___

According to The San Francisco Chronicle…

    - “Oakland has already guaranteed $750,000 of Culpepper’s salary and would be out that money if he was moved. He has a better shot to remain on the roster and start in Week 1, no matter what coach Lane Kiffin is saying now.”

  47. Dick V Says:

JR will sign with the Raiders. It is Al Davis that is playing hard ball with Russell’s camp. The agents for Russell or going to get forced to sign a deal that will drastically change the way guarantees and clauses are worked with the First pick. I beleive everyone knows about Al’s want to get the most amount of money into a signing bonus versus loading the contract with option and roster bonuses. On top of that Al wants the contract to move forward without a clause that has been given to recent previous No. 1 picks that protects monies paid in case of a holdout, and injury or suspension. JR will not play this year, and the feel no pressure to get him signed, and the agents definately do not want to be the ones that negotiate the contract that eliminates clauses that were widely accepted as common practice for the top players in the draft.

The bottom line is Al Davis is not Aurther Blank, the raiders are not the falcons, and Russell will not be walking away with a boat load of money that the Raiders will not be able to recoup in case of an injury, suspension, or holdout.

I have heard that Micheal Vick will only be on the hook for 3-4 million per PFT. The Falcons are talking about 22-28 million they want back, but they gave Vick over 25 million in Option bonuses which means that money is basically gone regardless of what Vick pleaded today. Every team is now taking note, and the Raiders are the one team that has a major contract under negotiations that can still prevent such a debacle from playing out in their house. JR will sign and the majority of the money will be in signing bonuses. JR will probably get 33+ million to ease the hit the agents will take for loosing the gold standard for NO.1 pick contract negotiations: guaranteed money and the ability for the teams to recoup that money.

As Sherlock use to say “the game is a foot”. JR will be our new messiah, and we all better pray he leads us to the promise land for that kind of dough.

  48. Dski Says:

I agree with the posts that point to Al’s comparison of Culpepper to Plunkett. McCown might end up being Pastorini to Culpepper’s Plunkett. McCown probably should start unless he he implodes. With Culpepper looming, he will play hard and hopefully smart. Once Culpepper gets the playbook and terminology down - where he’s playing instinctfully, he’ll be in there. Until then - go Raiders!

  49. Raiders Rain Says:

JR should want to sign as soon as possible. He can’t keep shopping with IOU slips for much longer. Sooner or later, some Merchant is going to pick up the Sports page, and say, what the F***! I thought he was already a Raider!

  50. morons all Says:

One bad year under Shell with a terible offensive line scheme and you morons think its an unrepairable malady that will doom the Raiders forever.
Since when is the number one requirement for success at the QB position the ability to scramble????
Brady and Manning are scramblers? How many rings between them in this decade?
You’re all morons that can’t see beyond last year…..some Raider fans.

  51. Huff24 Says:

Brady and Manning also have offensive lines that allow them to drop back without fear. Our offensive line play isnt much different in terms of players, so you need to counteract the possibility of a bad offensive line with someone who can move a little bit to avoid sudden death. Andrew Walter has been protected in pre season as the offensive line has been pretty good but he still was unable to outperform 2 guys that can scramble. Walter lost the battle simply because he couldn’t outperform the other QBs.

  52. EasTcoastRaider Says:

    Moron All,

    Nice Handle.
I didn’t see anyone here saying you can’t play in the NFL if you can’t scramble. I think the thing is that Kiff is looking for the QB that fits his system the best, not the rest of the league. Walter may go to another team and do fine, but we need someone that can roll out and make accurate passes on the run. DC & JM both fit that much better the Walter.

  53. Ryan Says:

I just watched that DC TD pass to Curry again. I was impressed how when they broke the huddle, DC looked at Curry and motioned him to come in. Curry then went in motion closer to the TE. Once Curry stopped his motion, that is when the Rams showed their blitz. DC read the blitz before the Rams showed it. Very nice play, topped with a great YAC by Curry.

  55. Kirk Says:

How long before Michael Vick ends up as a wide receiver for the Raiders?

  56. Huff24 Says:

I think we should go into the season with Jordan, Rhodes, Echemandu and Fargas. Rhodes will be on suspension for the first 4 games so we will have 3 RB’s activated during that time. We should keep Bush on the PUP list which will allow us to activate him after week 7 and before week 10. I say we activate him somewhere within that time and then we can release Fargas to make room for him. We will have 4 RB’s activated at that time with Jordan, Rhodes, Echemandu and Bush. I know some of you are Fargas fans and you may not like this idea but Fargas is expendable at this point. He is extremely fast but hes almost too fast. He needs to slow down and pick his holes wisely isntead of trying to run 100 mph every run. He needs to use patience and he gets hurt too often. Doing it this way will allow the Raiders to play Bush this year instead of putting him on IR.

  57. Huff24 Says:

HuffNPuff - Did your mother not hold you enough? Did you get bullied in school all your life and now you need to find someone you can focus all your aggression on? Let it out. Use me as your punching bag. Tell me how you really feel. Can I get you a glass of warm milk? Do you need a blanket? Maybe a pacifier? We can have a Dr. Phil moment if you like. I won’t even charge you.

  58. Huff24 Says:

Kirk - I honestly doubt Vick will ever play football again. I do hope he pulls his life around and makes better decisions but it would be a PR nightmare to allow him back. Did you hear about DMX and the dogs that were found on his property? You think Vick is snitching to lessen his sentence?

  59. huffnpuff24 Says:

    WRONG
Football championships are won by controlling the line of scrimage….not finding a flash in the pan QB who can throw on the run. Fix the offensive line first.

I think the thing is that Kiff is looking for the QB that fits his system the best, not the rest of the league. Walter may go to another team and do fine, but we need someone that can roll out and make accurate passes on the run. DC & JM both fit that much better the Walter.
How in the Hell would you know???
Have you seen the playbook? No one in this blog has a clue what Kiffin’s offense will look like in the regular season, so how in the hell do you know what QB fits his requirements.

    Morons all,

What do you ONE bad year under Shell? if you think the Raiders were doing just fine under the coaching of the guy PRE–Shell that’s now the head coach of some sad team in San Diego, then you really need to put the crack pipe down. You picked the right name to use, but you forgot “I’m a” in front of Moron.

yeah raider rainman the kmart underwear boy….. the offensive line scheme wasn’t anywhere near as bad under Turner as it was Shell. Do a little home work on Turner… he was a softy with no discipline who’s players were unprepared on Sunday.

  63. GuamanianRaider Says:

The comparison of Culpepper to Plunkett is a good one. Jimbo came in around week four or five and pulled at a victory at the end of the game. Plunk stated that when he was with the niners, “I couldn’t play catch with someone without fearing that I would be intercepted!” He may not have fumbled as much as Culpepper but he wound up turning over the ball he doubted himself on the easiest of throws. Having McCown start, say, for the first four games, gives Dante the chance to keep learning the new scheme and gives us a fresh pair of legs to compliment any holes our offensive line has not filled. A challenge for having McCown is his vision and efficacy over the middle of the field. He sure is pretty on those roll-outs and hits the TE at the sidelines. What he does allow better than either of the other quarterbacks is healthy legs for on-the-spot adjustments.

Gabriel being gone has Kiffin’s handwriting all over it. Williams has another game to sort out his hands and feet (Freddy B. said those two things working together makes a good wide receiver) issues.

Am I wrong here? Perhaps is was Jerry who wrote in his blog that Zach Miller has caught every pass in training camp except one. He has yet to drop a ball in a game (true?). He’s even gone down to the ground, reached high and behind, and pulled in everything thrown in his direction. That alone is a huge addition to our offense. Add Madsen and the RB & FBs to the short passing game (sometimes deep too) and we have and offense that appears unrelated to last year’s. I think JR will come in and be a Raider. What whatever his face said about him not wanting to come to a “leaky line” or whatever else he said sounds like the writer/sportscaster used the story as a platform for the ideas he already has about the Raiders. I’m fairly confident that JR would have taken in the Raiders games and seen how the line this year lines up. They appear to have taken to heart Kiffin’s credo that “everything counts” and even approach the line of scrimmage with more purpose than all of the line’s effort from last year.

I also have confidence in our play calling. This too shall influence our “surprising” start to the season. The media will think it is smoke and mirrors that we win three in a row before the bye, and they won’t accept us until we beat a “real team” like the Chargers. (Blah, blah, blah, Chargers fan. I’m still waiting to hear from you about how you will show up after that game come hell or high water for you. For some reason you continue to elude any dialog. I wrote you something about all those eggs you are counting and am curious how long we should let you grieve before calling you out… perhaps Halloween should be the limit.) Now, when we beat the Chargers during our fifth game, coupled with those three to four wins in September, we cannot let the favorable coverage go to our heads. I wouldn’t be surprised if we lost to Detroit, have everybody laugh at us for a few weeks, and quietly put together a string of victories until someone notices that we ARE playing well, even in that one loss. (Although I think our D WILL take care of Detroit.

What I want: our defense to pick up its scoring energy. I want two defensive scores a game average for the first eight games (at least).

Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda: I don’t care that we picked up Huff and no one else. I don’t care that we drafted JaMarcus and no one else. I don’t care that we coulda had Eddie George instead of Dudley. What I care about is WHO is a Raider and HOW do they play, WHEN given the opportunity WHAT do they do. (Charger keeps bringing up names of people that ARE NOT Raiders. So what? Play in your own fantasy league, Powder Blue Boy. Who here cares about what those other players do successfully, as long as it is not against us.)

The “talent” comment by Jerry is a shot, and the only way to respond is to play in such a manner that anyone who says that must talk like they don’t have access to ESPN News. We play as we’re coached we will win. We win, the sarcasm fades. We’ve all been hurting for a while. It’s hard to trust the preseason rhetoric (especially the heyday Haters have been having for a while). This is turning around. We are REALLY young on defense. Our offense has some players with youth too. Our line? It really should improve over the next three years and we’ll have distanced ourselves from the memory of 2006. Then we can treat that history as it should be entertained: as a campfire horror story.

    Raider on,

    Guamanian Raider

  64. GuamanianRaider Says:

Narrowing the field: from 53 1/3 to 53, yards to men. How much of a difference does that third of a yard make (one foot, you say). It changes the edge by one foot. For us? JaMarcus is that extra thrid. Whether folks want to give him the boot or the accelerator to the Raiders. He is a third because we drafted him, and we have yet to sign him and then coach him up. When he fully counts will be down the road as he’ll need lots of practice to learn the offense, and signing him alone only begins the process. Back in the day we’d let quarterbacks learn from the bench during games. Stabler didn’t start until his, what, fifth year? What I’m wondering is which player will be cut, placed on IR, or traded the day Russell sets foot on the practice field: which player becomes #54. I like the days when we could have 60 something players on the team and develop their skills in a sort of professional red-shirt (not just the quarterback) fashion. The word anxiety at root refers to a narrowing mountain path. The Turk is the Headless Horseman, and there is about one foot for a margin of error at the edge. Who gets pushed out when JR returns (yes, returns) to the Raiders? I kind of think Walter, perhaps, or maybe Frampton goes to the practice squad.

    Raider on,

    Guamanian Raider

  65. Sirbliztalot Says:

It better be Frampton. AW took a beating for this team last year and he hasn’t stunk up the place yet. He stood up until he could not longer stand up so that deserves at least a chance. Anyway, if DC and McGown can’t do it this year then it ain’t gonna get done. Jamarcus Bellpepper is not going to come into this league, after surveying the playbook, and be able to beat NFL defenses. He better sign, if he knows what best for him, and start traversing the learning curve. According to PFT.COM the Raiders are rated the second weakest team in the league!! That pisses me off, but I have to be objective and at least consider the possibility that they can be correct. After all our running game is going to be lead by a fullback as our primary halfback that can’t catch or hold onto the ball under any circumstances in the clutch. We will just have to wait and see after we take the gloves off and fight Detroit. If we lose, then sadly I suspect there may be some truth that assessment.

  66. j-rock2118 Says:

isnt the dead line today inform who got cut!!!!!!

  67. Nate Says:

I’m wondering who is going to play center? That is the key position on our o-line, and that will determine how we do blocking wise. Culpepper and McCown have had trouble receiving the snap from Grove because he botches the snap count. How can you be a center, and consistently botch the snap count? Newberry is not reliable health wise. He is, and has been, injury prone his whole career. Just like any other lineman, it’s his knees.
I’m uncomfortable with who we have at that position right now, and that concerns me. The center position is the Captain of the O-line, and what he reads, and how he responds, sets the tone for the rest of the blocking. The Raiders haven’t been the same since losing Barrett Robbins, but they’ve done nothing to replace him.
As for Andrew Walter, I think he would fit nicely with Washington. Trade Walter and Fargas to Washington, for Kili Lefotu (RG) and Joe Salave’a (DT).

  68. Raiderfanindonkycountry Says:

I think the sentimental favorite is obviously McGown because of the detroit connection but unless McGown really shows us something thursday night it’l be DC.

  69. Johnny Box Says:

Sims, Gallery, and Grove need I say more….let the season begin…

  70. frank wiley Says:

You heard it here first: The o-line will be suspect to poor until Carlisle and Green play themselves OFF the first team. What must Cable be thinking about? Boothe is the kind of physical blocker that gets respect out there. Henderson is just a better athlete than Gree, has more range and is a tougher player. Henderson should be the starter.I like Jake Grove but Jeremy Newberry is just too powerful and dominant to sit. Grove is quicker and is probably a better pure fit for the scheme as Carlisle is than Boothe but pure fit and pure power are different things. It’s still the players that make for success and not the scheme. The more physically dominant the players are the better the outcome. There are still far too many 1-2 yard plays and too much defensice penetration. This line as it is presently constituted will also give up a lot of sacks.Until this gets worked out it doesn’t matter who the qb is.

  71. Chad E Says:

McKown had one good X game and that was last week. Always knew he would be in the mix because of mobility. I question his accuracy and don’t believe he will look as good vs Seahags as he did vs Lambs.

Unless there is a real concern over CPeps health, he will start 9/9 vs Detroit. I don’t buy into the drama about keeping Detroit guessing, even if Kiff doesn’t announce the starter after the game, the starter will get the bulk of reps in practice.

I can smell the grass for the opener….Can’t wait!

  72. La Milicia Negra Says:

Carlos Francis and Doug Gabriel still figures on the roster @ raiders.com

  73. Terrapin Says:

    Damn,

I’m witnessing my hopes for AW swirling around and around the toilet. Oh well, thats life. Must move on. I honestly did think the guy showed tremendous improvement over last year and played better than JM.

I don’t know who should start week 1. I think DC would’ve been a shoe-in if he was here earlier. But Kiff already said he needs to catch up and misses some reads because of it. JM has a leg up that. JM has had one terrible game, one good game, and one great game. I’m not sure if this is a trend. But his inconsistency insofar makes me nervous.

DC has come in w/ limited time and has done just as well (if not better). That says a lot! I can’t see DC riding the pine. Now DC will def. make defenses fear us deep moreso than McCown. Is DC ready? Will he know enough of the playbook in time?

What the hell is going on with JR? Get in the action will you! I really wanted to see what our future would look like. Oh well.

As it currently stands, if Pep knows enough of the playbook I think he gives us the best chane to beat Detriot. I could be wrong as I have already been.

BTW: ZM IS A STUD…THE TIDES ARE TURNIN’ AND THE AUTUMN WIND IS BEGINNING TO BLOW….We are aquiring talent that either has the potential to match or surpass that in the division.

If DC reclaims his old self we will definitely have the best QB in the division. (maybe JM too if he really is baby Gannon)

CAN’T WAIT TO KICK SOME DONKEY BUT!!!!!!

  74. Raiderfanindonkycountry Says:

Believe me guys DC knows enough of the play book to beat the likes of detroit. We need consistancy at the QB position and to play Jmac for a few games and then bring DC in later dor sends a bad message to the rest of the NFL. As I’ve said before, platooning at the qb position is a bad idea, what do you think Coach Sean, and by the way are you getting any sleep with the new one? HA!

  75. La Milicia Negra Says:

RaiderInDonkeyLand… hahaha, yeah and consistency is a word not familiar to Culpeppers career, rather the lack thereof….

Furthermore Russell needs to sign before he gets on field, since ha haven’t signed yet, he won’t see any grass this year.

The starter will be between JM and DC, If DC loose he’ll go to Atlanta, to expensive to be bench warmer. If DC wins JM is out of the door. Given that scenario, if one of those two does a bad job it will be Walter as a starter the last few games of the season (as last year)

  76. Terrapin Says:

The man in donkey country…apologies for not being clear. I did not intended to imply that JR should start …just saying that he should’ve been here so we could see what we had gotten.

  77. La Milicia Negra Says:

The Giants started the year with loosing their FB Jim Finn, now their FB Robert Douglas is lost too. They plan to make Reuben Droughns their FB - again!

I’ll say (and I said it before) send Crockett to NY for whatever they’ll give us, we have to cut somewhere, I liked this Oren before camp, and I believe he’s got more raiderfans now!

  78. PAPAJOHN Says:

still hate Mccown…..he will suck if he starts…..DC is the best we have//sad but true folks

  79. East Coast Silver& Black Says:

Kiffin mean “kompetition”. Bye Bye Andrew. Vick becomes a “wide receiver” in the big house. Good to hear him say the right things. Now do the right things.

The D line looks good, the O line looks good, the great D is back, the Kiffen is making a big difference. Forget the past, remember the tradition.

  80. spelling 101 Says:

    Lose or Loose….2nd grade english

lose ….win or lose …..winning or losing

    loose…tight or loose…..

  81. severeraider Says:

DC is definitely the starter. He has been the most consistent QB thus far and has the best skill set of all the other qb’s in camp. He has scored the most and has about as many TO’s as walter and McCown. If you look at the performances both walter and josh did horribly with the our 3rd string while Daunte did a pretty good job with that same unit. Man I wished we had taken CJ and Troy Smith. These guys are winners and leave it all on the field. They are Warrick Dunns of their positions in terms of character.

Joe is a keeper, as well as Oren. These guys are beast and have been the stars of training camp. Crockett should be traded or cut. I like him but Justin Griffith has better hands and is a better blocker IMO. Oren will be a lead blocker in the mold of Ritchie, but has better hands than him.

Calvin Johnson will torch us for a big TD I gurantee. We have no one that can match up with him. Fabian is much too small and would need a brilliant coverage on every play and Asomugha is not fast enough and lacks the size to matchup. Our best shot is to go wolverine and let Huff play him because he has the size of Aso and is only slightly slower than Fabes. God forbid Routt or Carr or Starks has to cover him.

  82. Terrapin Says:

We win the Detroit game if we put pressure on Kitna. Otherwise, our DBs would be hard pressed to contain Detroit’s WRs for too long.

  83. aaronraider13 Says:

Peter Queen from SI hates the raiders. He always has some stupid comment, or negative spin. I quit reading that rag along time ago. He is not a credible journalist, but rather a biased hack.

  84. aaronraider13 Says:

Rookie Calvin johnson is in way over his head when he lines up against namdi in his first nfle. I totally expect a welcome to the nfl moment for him.

  85. silverswordz Says:

The offense that will be installed for the regular season is a system has a QB on the move
” a moving pocket” and plays that have the QB rolling out and throwing on the run. That
type of system favors McCown more so than DC. If it came down to a draw performance
wise, I think McCown may get the nod because he fits the system very well, he is athletic
and can thrown on the run pretty well. DC may not have the mobility to excell in the new
system. We shall see after the Seasquaks game ..

  86. ??? Says:

Who gives a flying poop what that. Guy from SI says. We all know money tals and BS. walks.

If Russell truly did not want to play for Oakland it would have n=been reported by multiple sources by
now Not just one guy that works for SI I also tend to think this would have become very clear.

Shortly before the draft or there after, and Oakland would have unloaded his rights already.

I also tend to think Russell would have pulled a Eli Manning made his feelings very clear back in April.

His rights would have been traded away on draft day. Oakland has also made it very clear they did not want to play Russell this year if possibel and they made sure of this when they went out and got DC for a year
This whole Russell drama will end soon he is not going to want to go long with out getting paid.

He may not get all the millions he wants but he will get a lot of them.

Yes I admit you could make a logical argument for trading him but then again I still believe they could have done that long before now.. I am starting to believe more in the he was held out of camp on purpose
    theory.

As for Gabrial being cut well If Willliams and Higgins had not looked decent in the first 3 games DG would still be around. I think Carlos Francis and Johniee Morant will be next. It then becomes a question of do you go with 4 or 5 WR. If its 4 then its between Witted Taylor and williams battiling for one spot behind Porter curry and Higgins. If its 5 then its btween Whitted and williams for the last spot. Or am I forgetting about
Somebody? If i am not mistaken all the other WR would probably clear waivers and could be eligeble for the practice squad.

Running Backs if he does not go on IR Bush starts on the PUP then around week 9 or so he gets activated and replaces probably Fargas who will be let go at that time unless one of the other guys is hurt by then.

Iam rambling guys sorry I do that. Maybe its all thoes years working the grave yard shift. Which reminds me its almost 9 30 am Time for me to go vist the sand man.

Have a good day one and all even that charger guy. :)

  87. La Milicia Negra Says:

Aaron Spelling, you got the meaning didn’t you?

If not why don’t write me a letter in danish where you describe how wrong I am? and i’ll come back to you with the grammar. thanks for the subtle correction…

But why comment on grammar mistake or typo? Why not comment on the content instead? Aaron, personally i think its worse when raiderfans write McKown or Namdi asumugga and so on…

If you were a regular in this forum you would know I’m from Denmark and I’m getting one or two comments like yours every month, still I come with more valid post than a lot of our ‘visitors’ but then again this forum has been reduced greatly in its quality in comments lately.

Aaron Spelling you can say what you want to me, I’m ‘IN’ and I’m gonna stay that way! And of course I’m counting on more typo and grammar comments from you and like-minded like you… hope I someday will be able to take spelling 202!

  88. silverswordz Says:

Anyone care to guess if Mike Williams will make the 53 man roster? The last pre-season game I saw him in against the Rams he was dropping balls left and right that were right on target. Maybe we should have kept Gabriel?

  89. Terrapin Says:

Some more insight on game vs Detrioit: http://www.insidebayarea.com/raiders/ci_6729973

    Here’s my assessment.

-Raiders offense. Both short- and long-term, Kiffin can only go in one direction when it comes to announcing his starting quarterback. It has to be Culpepper, who’s healthy, hot and appears to be both the players’ and fans’ choice. Let the real games begin, which hopefully will prompt JaMarcus Russell to join in on the fun when he sees his mirror image having some success.

-Raiders defense. When the Lions’ Jon Kitna sees film of the Oakland defense in action against the Rams, he’ll see why Marc Bulger was running scared all night Friday. Returning almost everybody from last season, the unit is in midseason form.

    Are the Raiders ready? Yes

  90. paul Says:

The Raiders are essentially losing this season (for the rookie) because of the fact that Jamarcus Russell held out. His 6 year contract should now be subsidized because his first year is now useless to the Raiders.

  91. La Milicia Negra Says:

    ??? I agree with you

thogh I hope whitted goes before Johnny Morant and even before Brayton, I just hate Whitted, he shouldn’t be on any NFL Roster!

As for the SI guy, Michael isn’t he Nancy gays sister, just a bit kinder?

  92. Thec Says:

severeraider you are aussiming that our pass rush will give their QB time to make a big play to calvin johnson. I dont think they will have enough time to get the ball downfield to him IMHO.

  93. silverswordz Says:

I do not blame Al D. for the way the Russell contract negotiations have progressed. If I was a team owner, I wouldn’t want to get screwed out of millions either (Ashley Lelie) for holdouts, injuries etc. Rookie contracts are out of control. They guys in the league that have already proven themselves should get the big money, not the wet behind the ears rookies who had success in the college ranks only. Waaayyyyyy overhyped. I hople Al stands his ground and helps to set a new precident in how rookie contracts are done. F*** Russell, the Raiders offered him over 30 mil and he still didn’t sign. I say we keep the 3 QB’s we have and move on without his ass.

  94. danny from pgh Says:

    i’m in…… wait a minute ! i’ve always been in…..raiders til i die….

  95. Cuzin'Vinnie Says:

So am I believe that Carlos “Beetlejuice” Francis is better than Doug “Predator” Gabriel? I’ll take the Predator any day….hell, at least I have seen him play this preseason…he even had a catch. Can’t say the same about the ‘juice. But I guess in the whole scheme of things, it just doesn’t matter if they get cut now or on Saturday.

  96. Blackholepriest Says:

Severeraider Nnamdi is just as fast as CJ and while he doesn’t have the bulk he is 6′3″ . Don’t worry Nnamdi has proven he can cover the best in the NFL. CJ may score but Nnamdi will get his. I don’t think fans realize just how good an athlete Nnamdi is.

The Qb situation is very int. overall Daunte is the better QB but it may come down to Kiffin not being as comfortable with Daunte’s knowledge of the offense and playing as fast (knowing the plays so as to audible in and out of plays ) so McCown may get the call on that alone.

But even at that Daunte has served an enormous purpose in raising McCowns’ level of play and those who think Daunte won’t be here if he doesn’t start. The Raiders simply can’t afford to do that he’s here until Kiffin is 100 % certain of the QB situation, money is not an issue in this regard. Moving Daunte at any point this year would be a huge mistake in my opinion.

The defense in my opinion looks improved and I think will be more dominant due to the fact that the offense will control the clock and provide a lead allowing the defense to tee off on opposing QB’s and wreak havoc.

I must admit I am pleasantly surprised at the progress this team has made in such a short amount of time. It shows i think how badly this team was mismanaged last year. That’s really the only sound explanation because they are starting to look like a contender to me already.
    I am very impressed.

  97. La Milicia Negra Says:

where is the spelling police? I’ve noticed a mistake in someones post, who do I report it to? assuming isn’t it? for F sake, I got his comment even with the typo!, spelling 101, it’s not that hard…

Thec, yeah I believe the most important part of the Detroit game is, to close their run game and open our own run game. I believe we have the upside in the passing game because our pass-rushers are better than theirs. But only a few correct throws from Kitna to his WR’s could turn this game over on their hands. I’m so excited about this season, but I won’t be positive, learned my lesson the last couple of years

  98. Cuzin'Vinnie Says:

Gotta keep things in perspective….this is only preseason. Remember last year…it was all good until we got blanked in the first game. I don’t get the feeling that’s going to happen this year. If we can be 2-1 after week 3 I will be happy….gotta start somewhere, right?

  99. East Coast Silver& Black Says:

    La Milicia Negra,

You content is great but your grammar and spelling just looks like another example of the dumbing down of America. How about a little pride in the whole presentation?

  100. Blackholepriest Says:

Man O man!! the RECORD doesn’t mean anything it’s the way their playing it’s hands down a much higher level up to this point. the QB play is better, the front seven is better, the O-line is worlds better. I don’t give a kick about a pre-season record.

  101. Bob Marley Says:

Jeez, I had to cut myself from the tv and internet for 3 days to watch the replay last night and I just spent the last hour reading jerry´s and fan´s posts here. I´m glad I did though, I am very impressed with our team, it´s only preseason and the rams did not play one the top 3 rb´s and one of the to 3 wr´s in the league, but still we showed we are a different team this year.

    Some thoughts….

    - I saw Antajj Hawthorne being manhandled by Andy Mcollum and then saw Gerard Warren push the same guy all the way to Frerote´s mug, I say cut Hawthorne and give Warren a chance, he did not show much but at least he showed he can´t be blocked one on one by a 10 year journeyman.

    - Love Kiffin, all the QB controversy here is moot, I trust him to make the right call. Agressive play-calling like he said he would do a welcome sight.

    - When people here can only complain abot Daunte´s underthrowing a couple of balls you know we are in good shape, him underthrowing balls should be the least of our concerns about the guy, with his arm you won´t see that often and even though he could have placed them a bit better they were catchable and very decent throws, unlike AW´s pass into quadruple coverage against SF. Fumbling and exchange still worrysome though.

    - This Jerry Porter fella is beginning to rub me off, lots of talk for a guy with 300 catches in 8 years, put up or shut up man. Otherwise, cut him next year and use his money on Nmandi and Derrick.

    - Congrats to Coach Sean on junior´s arrival.

  102. spelling 101 Says:

spelling police??? take it anyway you want to….you want to look like an idiot, making primary school mistakes, while trying to make a valid point, or stating an opinion….. that’s your right in this country.
I guess someone who can’t take the time to express themselves in a semi-literate manner doesn’t want to be taken seriously.

  103. Coach Sean Says:

Decent article…a little old, but didn’t catch it until today:
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/08/14/kiffin0820/index.html

  104. b-man Says:

Culpepper will start unless he totally whiffs in this preseason game. Kiffin needs to find his guy and stick with him. Culpepper may not know or be fully comfortable with ALL the plays yet, but he will be within a couple more weeks. And by then, he will clearly be the choice. Coach needs to make the best loing-term solution, and switching QBs after two or three gamesi s not a good idea. Look for Culpepper to get the nod and mcCown to be more than ready to step in if Daunte goes down or trips up in the first few games. I’m IN!

  105. Blackholepriest Says:

    B-man, I’m IN! too ( I agree)

  106. Behind Enemy Lines Says:

    La Milicia Negra:

Dont worry too much about your grammar and spelling. I enjoy knowing that I have a Raider Brother half way accross the World.

Perhaps some of these people should find a grammar blog where they can pester each other!

    Take care, Behind Enemy Lines

  107. Coach Sean Says:

    Thanks, Marley.

I noticed too that Hawthorne is not good about disengaging from blockers. I don’t know that Warren is the answer either though. Warren’s revenge factor might be a plus versus Denver, but the guy has yet to make a consistent impact anywhere. Hawthorne is still young, and comes at a cheaper price. With Sands, Sapp and Kelly being the primary rotation, with a little Brayton on passing downs, don’t think it matters too much anyway.

Kiffin will make the right choice, and eventually, if not Week 1, I believe that Culpepper will be the guy. His veteran knack for making a big play are a must at QB, and that will prevail eventually. As I siad yesterday, I think the a lot of the concern about Daunte is the speed at which he is playing…still a little slow, but improving weekly.

Sure would like some update other than “nothing new to report” on Russell. I must admit I’m absolutely SHOCKED, that this has gone on this long. Disappointing too. Preseason is when you get to see the new guys in game action, now we’re looking at Week 16 before we might even get a glimpse of Russell on the field. Oh well.

Anyone else find out what the rest of the cuts were? Gabriel won’t be missed. Morant and Francis will be gone for sure too.

The Miller and Madsen show will be fun, however, I’m a little concerned about the lack of a pure blocking tight end for goal line and short yardage. Stewart has been unimpressive. I saw Jermaine Wiggins is available…might be a good signing as a 3rd TE.

  108. Cuzin'Vinnie Says:

Coach Sean, if I remember correctly Sapp played TE on goal line situations a couple years ago so he may be yet another option….

  109. ryan420raider Says:

Watch miller when he blocks, he can flat out be an every down TE.

Gabriel was cut mid season by the patsies, that says alot.

One thing not discussed in regards to the QB situation, is how the rest of the team responds to that particular QB, how they rally around the guy. That says alot too.

  110. KoolKell Says:

Coach Kiffin is an impressive Play Caller
Coach Kiffin is very poised on the sideline for a rookie
    All the rookies look good.
The Raiders have won the Time Of Posession battle every game so far.
This is NOT a dink & dunk offense, but an explosive offense suited for playmakers.
Mr Davis is a Great Man and bullheaded as hell.

  111. La Milicia Negra Says:

Coach Sean good to see you back,

I really had high hopes for Tony Stewart, the games I’ve seen him in he was real good in blocking, so I was positive about the acquisition, but apparently he haven’t shown much

  112. Desert Raider Says:

I agree 100% with Paulie V. McClown is garbage and should be 3rd string, if anything at all.
There is a reason he didn’t stick with the Cardinals or Lions. Why can’t Kiffin see this? Yes, his
mobility is better than Andrew Walter but doesn’t accuracy and good decision making count for
something? Too many people are quick to judge AW based on the ‘bed and breakfast’ system
in place last season. Daunte gives us the best chance to win right now. C’mon Kiff, don’t let the
    Raider Nation down! GO RAIDERS!

  113. desert dimwit Says:

yeah Kiffin don’t you know us idiots in the raider nation know more than you on choosing the right QB to run your offense (even though we haven’t a clue of what’s in that offense)

  114. La Milicia Negra Says:

    hahahhaha funny stuff

  115. raiderstud Says:

this is bull sheeeeeeeeeeet…………………………al sign JR already………….in the real world I would understand taking ethical stands aginst outrageous money……………….but this is a
bunch of bilionaires negotiating against a bunch of millionaires………they are arguing over pocket change ( in their world)………..get off your ego trip and make it happen papa AL……..your
not doing a service to society as much as your trying to shape your legacy before you
kick the bucket……………….JR would not have bought a home in Oakland if he truely hated being with the raiders…………………………………….its embarassing…………….get him into camp and let …..
him start kickig some ass…..so we can actually win …………DID YOU NOT TELL THEM THEY
WERE THE LORDS CHIPS…………………..GET IT DONE PAPA RAIDER………JUST SIGN HIM BABY

  116. raiderdud Says:

Yeah papa Al ….throw principle to the wind… sign Russell so I don’t look like such a fool for buying his jersey.

  117. Coach on Wheels Says:

McCown is more of a threat than DC fans think.

I thought McCown ran himself out of the competition a couple weeks ago but last week he showed he may be Kiffin’s best ALL AROUND option.

McCown may not have the power DC has on the deep ball but, DC only completed 1 deep pass in three outings. His pass to Porter was dropped but it was also underthrown. Do we base our whole offense around the once every two week deep pass? By the way, after the 50 yarder we settled for a FG.

“Then again, Culpepper has played in 11 games since 2004 _ seven before he suffered a serious knee injury and four more with Miami to begin last season. In those games, Culpepper threw eight touchdown passes, 15 interceptions, fumbled eight times and was sacked 52 times”

THANK YOU JERRY! Finally! Someone points out it isn’t 2004 anymore! Culpepper has posted Walteresque stats the last 11 games and Art Shell was nowhere around. Seven games were before his injury so don’t blame that.

The reality is DC may start BUT Kiffin understands mistake-free play wins games. McCown has made far fewer mistakes than DC. McCown is more stable and this talk of leadership is a fantasy for DC proponents. McCown was a firey leader in the Rams game. His actions and style prompted a Rams player to say, “Look it’s Rich Gannon.” Oh I wish.

Raider fans do you remember -

Strong arm inconsistent QB’s - Jeff George, Jay Schreoder, Marc Wilson, Kerry Collins

Accurate, consistant QB’s with touch - Gannon, Hoss, Stabler, Plunkett

I like DC but I think in the end McCown gives a better chance to win games with our D and running game and no mistakes.

  118. Coach Sean Says:

Vinnie, true Sapp could fill the role in short yardage and goal-line, not to mention throwing another o-lineman, say McQ or Henderson in to beef up the blocking. Guess it’s not that big a deal.

Donkey country…yes, I’m getting some sleep, not good sleep per say, but sleep. I’m kinda off the hook with the baby, cause I don’t have breastesses:-)

…regarding “platooning” at QB, not exactly positive on what you’re asking, but if you’re talking about alternating, or being indecisive, on who the QB is, then NO, it’s not a good idea. I still believe that until Russell is in camp, for a decent amount of time, the Raiders will carry all four guys. It’s Daunte’s job to lose, and I think the decision has really already been made. I think McCown is getting another chance to go with the first unit, because his shot was the 1st preseason game, when things aren’t as settled, as they are now. Daunte, and Walter, for that matter, have gotten more time with the first unit than has McCown. It’s just his turn again, and he has looked solid all preseason. I think Walter’s propensity to get sacked, and the fact that he is the least likely to “create” a big play of the three, lends to the fact that he has been eliminated from the competition to be the man. Daunte’s knee will keep McCown on the roster until JaMarcus is ready to be elevated to #3. Walter’s contract (more than a year remaining) should keep him around until 2008.

  119. Coach on Wheels Says:

    Desert Raider -

McCown lost his job in Arizona to Kurt Warner and backed up 4,500 passer Jon Kitna.

Culpepper lost his job in Minnesota to Brad Johnson who turned the team around and proved DC was the problem. Culpepper then lost his job to Joey Harrington and later to a recovering Trent Green.

Hmmm One guy has never had a shot and was available via TRADE. McCown

One guy was a pro bowler who people in the NFL think so little of he was available as an unrestricted free agent. Culpepper

Talk pedigree and McCown wins. Fourth round value versus FA value.

  120. Raiders are weak Says:

Raiders… Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha… Silver and Black… ooooohhhh scary…. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha…

  121. Coach on Wheels Says:

ATLANTA HAS NO USE FOR RUSSELL SO JUST STOP ALREADY!

“Gee, I don’t know squat about Atlanta’s team but I heard that feller Micheal Vick got in a heap ‘o trouble so I’m guessin’ Atlanta might be wantin’ Russell.”

    THEY DON’T.

Joey Harrington is running Patrino’s offense very well and Patrino has a free pass this year with Vick gone. Next year Patrino can draft his QB for his system from Louisville. Why the heck would they want a guy who isn’t going to be ready to play until 2008 and wants too much money to sign anyway? Why? If you think they do - why?

  122. Coach Sean Says:

    Exactly Wheels…thanks.

Russell will sign, and as upset as I and most of us are, it will still happen. Trading the rights, re-entering the draft, and any other such talk should cease.

  123. NewEngland Raider Says:

Im not too worried about Detroit’s receivers. Last yr Washington covered williams and id expect Nnamdi to cover Johnson. Nnamdi is absolutely made to cover a receiver like Johnson. He is a rare athlete. At 6′2, 210lbs he is a big corner, Asomugha is a prototype Raiders wing player, a defender who possesses safety-type toughness and superior speed. During his career at Cal, he played free safety, then moved to cornerback as a senior. He has 4.48 speed, not blazing like washington or Huff but enough to blanket and he is by far the most physical. 4.48 is more than adequate, the only time you need to have more is when you blow coverage and you need to catch up.

  124. NewEngland Raider Says:

Pepper sure doesnt talk much. Has he always been this way with the media? Not a bad thing, i just wonder if he knows something? Kiffin maybe did make decision just has not made it public??

Im actually relatively content with our QB position, i feel we can achieve success with either. Interesting that what i like about one is exactly my concern with the other:

DC: like arm strength but concerned about health and mobility (fumbling while trying to escape) and making poor decisions.

JM: like his mobility, conservative decision making, skills match scheme. Concerned about his ability to make the tough throws on sideline routes and downfiels.

If we just had a QB who could do both….ahhhh yes JR. arrrrg!

  125. severeraider Says:

Aso is not as fast as CJ, 6′5″ 235lbs with a vertical jump above 43″ inches compared to Aso 6′3″ 210lbs frame is a huge advatage. CJ had a top five 40 time at the combine without even expecting to run and in someones elses shoes. I don’t know if you have ever played football or ran a 40 but for those who have, we know that is damn impressive. Football is a game of inches and those measurables give CJ a HUGE advantage. I watched Aso and I also know that he played safety at cal and everywhere at Narbonne, I know exactly what kind of athelete he is. I’m from so. cal and played ball so I watch the game and KNOW a mismatch when I see one. Only way Aso has a chance is if we play press coverage and let Aso get into him the way Revis and the other guy who was taken in the supplemental draft did. Pass rush could help nullify his ability but only if we press. Cj has the ability to be a Keyshawn Johnson posession type or a Randy Moss go deep and get it type guy. Remember CJ had Reggie Ball as a QB in college and might I add he is a Wr in the league now. Need I say more??? Give Cj a qualified Qb and one on one coverage he has a chance to put up huge numbers. He now has that in detroit. I’m not gonna say he will absolutely torch us, but there is a very good chance of it. He will have at least one big catch. 6′5″ 235, 4.35 40 yd dash, 43″ vertical jump, crazy work ethic the guy is a freak of nature. Aso has great ability but he will have his hands more than full. Fabes is the better pure cover guy of the 2 IMHO. Aso wasn’t good enough to be a starting CB at cal at a point when they weren’t a good team and has 3 lousy seasons and 1 breakout season doesn’t say much for his cover ability. the guy is good but the jury is still out. CJ is the prototype FOOTBALL player, he has Larry Fitzgerald size, Randy Moss athletecism, Jerry Rice work ethic, and the personality of Marvin Harrison. In terms of potential he and Russell were un matched and he has a much better work ethic than J-rock. Like i said Aso has his hands full when they meet, especially with Martz running the show.
