Postgame wrap

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, November 25th, 2007 at 8:09 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News, notes and observations from Sunday’s 20-17 win by the Raiders over the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium:

– Lane Kiffin said often he never bought into the AFC West streak, and he didn’t want his players to believe it, either. Just pretend as if it doesn’t exist and prepare for the next game.

Well, not exactly. Apparently Kiffin reminded the Raiders of their 17-game losing streak often.

“You can stop writing about it and Kiff can stop reading it and reading it to us,” defensive tackle Warren Sapp said.

– The way Herm Edwards managed the end of the game for the Chiefs made Art Shell look like Bill Belichick.

After the Raiders took a 20-17 lead, they did what they almost always do _ allowed Kansas City to drive right back down the field and deep into scoring territory. A third-and-5 pass from Brodie Croyle to Eddie Kennison got just four yards, bringing up fourth-and-1.

The Chiefs called time out. Then they decided to challenge the ruling on the spot, believing they may have had a first down. If they had made the challenge immediately, they would have lost a time out if they lost the challenge, and still had all three if they were right.

When officials upheld the original spot, the Chiefs were out a pair of time outs and had only one left.

Then the Chiefs decided to go for the first down on fourth-and-1 and didn’t get it when Kolby Smith was stopped for a 1-yard loss by Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard.

Kansas City rushed for 163 yards and Smith had 150 on 31 carries in his first start, but it was a risky call. Too risky, Sapp believed. Referring to the two big pass plays Kiffin called on Oakland’s scoring drive which led to the leading score, juxtaposed with Edwards’ work in the final moments, Sapp said, “Kiff goes a little unconvetional and Herm hands us the game. That’s wrong. You kick that ball, you tie the game and you’re at home and live to fight another day. You tie that game, kick it off, line it up and play defense and stretch the game a little longer.”

– Kiffin noted that Dave Raymer, the Chiefs kicker, had missed a 30-yard field goal a short time before.

“I don’t know that I was surprised,” Kiffin said. “I guess you’ve got to keep in mind they had just missed a field goal pretty bad, so maybe it had to do with the footing or the kicker.”

– If Edwards had called something other than the base running play on the fourth-and-1, he likely would have hit paydirt. Rob Ryan had sent in a goal line defense, something the Raiders rarely do at the 23-yard-line in short yardage.

Kirk Morrison said he thought back to Dick Vermeil’s decision to send Larry Johnson in from the 1-yard line with time running out in his rookie year and figured it would be a run.

“You just think back to all the times that we played the Kansas City Chiefs. For them, passing in that situation would be copping out,” Morrison said. “That’s just not their mentality.”

– Raymer’s field goal preceeded an amazing three-play sequence unlike anything the Raiders have shown in recent years.

On first down, Daunte Culpepper hit Zach Miller with a 28-yard gain. Miller, the rookie from Arizona State, has been predominatly a block-and-release receiver. The depth of the route caught the Chiefs flat-footed.

“It looked like one of our other plays and I just took it deep, and it worked just like it did in practice,” Miller said. “We knew it would be there all week and we called it at a perfect time. They were all up on the ball, and it turned out pretty awesome.”

On the next play, Culpepper waited for Porter to get between zones and led him perfectly for a 35-yard strike down the right sideline to the 14-yard line. Fargas ran it in from the 14 on the next play.

The team that has numerous eight-plus play drives end in punts had scored on three perfectly executed plays.

“We talked about it with our players. It’s going to be in the fourth quarter, it’s going to be like all these other games and we’re going to go for it,” Kiffin said. “We’re not going to wait for something to happen, we’re not going to wait for them to screw it up. We’re going to go for it. We’re going to attack, and I thought we did that, especially in the second half.”

– Kiffin talked during the week about how eager he was to face the same team for the second time in a season. He said Sunday night some plays, the pass to Miller in particular, were adjustments based on the prevous Chiefs game.

“We did a lot today that counteracted what we had done last time and what we’ve been able to see with matchups,” Kiffin said.

– Whatever it is Kiffin was drawing up, what made everything possible was the Raiders best offensive line play of the season. It wasn’t perfect, but considering they were playing in Arrowhead against a front seven that dominated them in Oakland, it was better than the Week 4 domination against an extremely weak Miami defense.

Paul McQuistan was called for a false start and a hold but held up much better than in Tennesee or Minnesota. The decision to play him at right tackle and leave Robert Gallery at left tackle was a wise one in terms of continuity.

On the three-play drive which gave the Raiders the lead, Culpepper had all the time he needed to complete the passes to Miller and Porter. No Chiefs were anywhere near the pocket.

– He got some help as Kiffin tried to limit one-on-one situations, but Barry Sims effectively controlled Allen, an NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidate, as few linemen have this season.

– Fargas’ 139-yard effort was the first time the Raiders put a back over 100 yards in Arrowhead since Nov. 5, 1978. Art Whittington gained 134 yards that day.

– Michael Huff got his first interception in the 27th game of his career, correctly reading a Brodie Croyle sideline pass for impressive rookie Dwayne Bowe.

“That took a lot of weight off my shoulders,” Huff said. “They were throwing it to the outside receiver, Tony (Gonzalez) stayed in and blocked and I just took a chance and jumped it. I just made a play.”

– In case you were wondering, yes, LaMont Jordan’s 5-yard touchdown run was supposed to be a pass.

“You liked that, huh?,” Kiffin said. “Should I make myself look good? No, that was a halfback pass. He was supposed to throw it away if it’s covered. It was a great play by him. And our guys still fighting on the backside, playing until the whistle. It was a really good play by LaMont. Yeah, it was a halfback pass.”

Jordan has been with the Raiders since 2005 and had never scored a rushing touchdown on the road. The first time he gets one, it comes on a pass play.

Jordan apparently moved back above Dominic Rhodes as the second back behind Fargas.

– The Raiders twice had possessions on the Chiefs side of the field _ Huff’s interception gave them the ball at the 26 and a 29-yard Dustin Colquitt punt let them open at the 48 _ and wound up with field goals both times.

More maddening, both times the Chiefs immediately came back and scored, once on a touchdown and once on a field goal, and took a 10-6 lead into the half.

– Smith is the eighth running back to gain 100 or more yards on the Raiders this season, joining Travis Henry, Ronnie Brown, LaDainian Tomlinson, Larry Johnson, LenDale White, Ron Dayne and Chester Taylor.

– Stuart Schweigert missed the first game of his career after suiting up for 58 consecutive games and was replaced in the starting lineup by Hiram Eugene, although Eugene came out on occasion with Chris Carr playing deep safety in some packages.

– Supported with good protection and a terrific running game, Culpepper completed 68.1 percent of his passes (15 of 22) for 170 yards. He had one pass dropped _ one which would have been a first down by Curry _ and another to Porter was ruled out of bounds and looked as if it could have been ruled complete.

– As to the report last week that JaMarcus Russell would start Dec. 2 against the Broncos, Kiffin said Culpepper would start against Denver.

– Expect the Raiders to keep moving forward with the plan to get Russell in a game, although if they look as smooth and error free under Culpepper as they did against Kansas City, it might make Kiffin more hesitant to do it as soon as Sunday.

Which, of course, is a good problem to have.

– Jarrod Cooper went down with a knee injury in the first half and Kiffin indicated he is probably out for the season. The Raiders played most of the game without their two most valuable core special teams players, Cooper and Isaiah Ekejiuba, who was inactive with a foot injury.

– Janikowski had his first touchback in two weeks and converted both field goal attempts, including a 54-yard bomb. He has made 17 of his last 18 attempts.

Bob Marley - “I guess they´d rather be right and have us loss to satisfy their petty little egos”.

Funny…I bet you will find a way to argue your own statement. Al Davis has said that he’d rather be right too and it has cost us alot of wins because of it. Al Davis also has a big ego but you’re so quick to get on a fan for the same exact thing. You praise Al Davis for being what you hate but continue to criticize other fans. The minute things didn’t work out with Art Shell…Al Davis was the first person to say that he wanted Leinart, CLEARLY putting the blame on Art Shell for choosing Michael Huff. Al Davis is known for doing this with all of his coaches and he recently displayed it at Coach Kiffin’s press conference yet you deny the truth. Deny, deny, deny right? You can’t hide from these facts and you know it. Its only ok for the Almighty Al Davis to blame other people and to always be right and to take the credit when things go right and to blame others when things go wrong. God should slap you for worshipping Al Davis the way that you do.

  2. Huff24 Says:

Bob Marley - The minute you stop making stupid comments is the moment I stop interfering with your little high. Obviously…I’ll never stop.

  3. Raiders Fanatic Says:

Herman Edwards went retarded going for it on 4th and one. The FG 3pt was the best way to go, instead, KC got stuff for a loss! Thanks for giving us the Game coach! This is one of the best Raiders win since the Dolphin’s, the running game was ON, and DC did his job. The drops early on are inexcusable for vets, I thought the game was gonna go south ASAP after the drops and fumble!

  4. Terrapin Says:

I posted this on previous thread but I really wanted to know if you all can provide a link to the David White article:

Where are you guys reading this DWhite SFGate article. I can’t find it.

Anyway this draft MAY turn out to be a damn good one.

ZM - Starter and damn good one …he’ll only get better w/ time and as the Oline pass blocks better so he doesn’t have to stay in.

OO - Not a starter yet, but he’s seeing more and more playing time (prob more than JGriffiht). Watch Fargas highlights on NFL.com and you’ll see OO on all of them. 6th rounder!!

JRich - Starter due to neccesity. He’s good and will get better. 5th rounder

    JLH - I don’t expect a lot here but I think he’ll make a viable #3 or #4

MBush - pencil him in @ #1 or #2 next year.

JRussell - pencil him in as starter next year.

That could be 5 starters from this draft when its all said and done.

  5. Terrapin Says:

I don’t think Herm gave us the game. I don’t think his election to go for it was a bad choice either. Thier Kicker was terrible. He can barely hit the broad side of a barn.

More questionable was his election to challenge the spot. But at the same time, if you think in probabilities, it wasn’ t a bad challenge. It was a challenge for the spot. Now the spot IS NEVER ACCURATE if you really think about it. If they moved the ball a foot in either direction he wins the challenge.

  6. Raiders Fanatic Says:

The FG was a 30 yarder or something. A high school kicker coulda made it! No wonder KC is on a losing streak. The decison making are ridicules… especially from playoff caliber coach like Herman Edwards. OK.. the kicker missed one kick, it doesn’t mean he’s gonna miss all the later kicks. The Raiders keep going for Jano regardless of the missed kicks… it’s all football decisons IMO.

  7. Madumb Raider slapper Says:

    >>Al Davis was the first person to say that he wanted Leinart, CLEARLY putting the blame on Art Shell for choosing Michael Huff. >>

Man you’re stupid. That jerkoff in San Jose accused Al of not giving the coaches any say in personnel decisions at Kiff’s press conference. So Al snapped at the dumbass and said you don’t know what you’re talking about, who do you think wanted Huff last year. He didn’t blame Shell for anything and NEVER said I wanted Leinert. All he did was tell some moron–you shoul be familiar with this logic–that you don’t have an effing clue. But hey, make stuff up if you like an call it fact. By the way, you don’t seem too happy the Raiders won. Wonder why that is?

  8. Terrapin Says:

The kicker missed a simple 30 yarder the last time we played them if I remember correctly. the kicker has been missing all year - he stinks. I just don’t think it was a bad decision. They were running all over our D - ALL GAME! Averaging nearly 6ypc. With that average the chances were on his side of success. We just pulled it out. Thats all.

  9. Huff24 Says:

Madumb Raider - I’m very happy about the Raiders win. Read my other posts. Also…I’m not the only one responsible for the arguements. Some people just want to instigate but don’t say anything to them…find someone else to blame.

  10. Los "T" Says:

THANK YOU RAIDERS! No more Ground Hog Day!

    50% Improvement over last season…

Lets kick some donkey ass this weekend…

    Born In!

  11. Raider Dell Says:

    Terrapin,
    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/11/25/SPVMTHOCV.DTL

  12. SilverandGray Says:

It’s a win and thank God for that. The boys played for 60 minutes and deserve credit for that.

  13. Raiders Fanatic Says:

sIt’s clearly DC wasn’t the goat to all the previous losses because of INTs, the WRS cannot hang on to the football, if they all held on to the ball then Raiders woulda been 6-5 or something. Miller fumble was a rookie mistake, but it’s good to see Lan going to the TEs for yardage instead of the WRs who drop passes like hot potatoes!

  14. Terrapin Says:

Thanks Raider Dell, I remember reading that. I just tend to skip over BS so I didn’t finish it. Thats why I had a vague memory of it.

  15. Raiders Fanatic Says:

Justin Fargas need to be RE-SIGN! The kid is running wild and getting the yardages. Jordan look like he’s healthy after the runs and TD. He didn’t strain when he cuts back. It’s a good sign, hopefully, we’d win some more UPSETS.

  16. Raider Dell Says:

    TERRAPIN,
Im my opinion it takes three years to evaluate a draft, this draft is no different.
It is always easy to judge and grade a draft after only after 11 games.
That’s just looking to the negative, were talking about 11 draft choices between the ages of 20 and 22 years old. They still are maturing and learning to be a pro, with all the distractions.
The Patriots are held up as the best team over the last seven years, their draft is only average.
The patriots last draft only three are having any impact. Most of their choices were cut.

  17. Terrapin Says:

Case in point, David writes: “O’Neal has no offensive touches” Well thats not true. He has 1 reception for 1 yard vs Tenn. Minor - I know. But a FACT thats so easy to research. Just show you how much thought they give things. (He’s almost labeling the draft a bust …while I mentioned above that we could end up with 5 starters)

  18. Jose Says:

I’m not a big Sims fan, but he stepped up in today’s game, as did the entire offensive line. McQuistan performed much better than I would have imagined based on his play earlier this season as a sub. Hats off to the O-Line and Tom Cable.

I’m impressed that Kiffin went with some passing plays with the game on the line instead of just running it out. That’s the main difference between Gru and Kiff: Gru was too conservative offensively opting to run, run and run.

The defense as a whole is still undisciplined. We will continue to get gouged until this is addressed. Hopefully this win doesn’t provide any false comfort for the D.

  19. Bob Marley Says:

    Now Huff24…

First off, your last 2 posts directed at me…man you sound so desperate to prove yourself, it´s really pathetic….

I don´t wanna show you off anymore than you have done it yourself over the past few weeks, so If I were you, I´d enjoy the win and move on.

By the way Al Davis has said he´d rather be right?uhm… rather than what?…what is that quote? what does it even mean?.

Oh…also, Slapper called you out for what is yet another unfortunate, inaccurate ”quote” or ‘’statement” and as usual you had no answer for it.

And you brought up Davis, not me.

  20. Terrapin Says:

True …even I am early judging them …but I’m a fan so what do you expect?

  21. rodmoney Says:

Hey, it’s great to come home with a win and enjoy it for it’s far overdue. We see what we do and don’t do well and hopefully our weaknesses will be addressed and continue to throw the balanced attack if that what it takes to get it done. We can beat the broncs if we do the things offensively done today but we have to stop the run better. They won’t be starting a rook for the 1st time, and Cutler is a much better passer than Croyle. I’m confident we can win next week so keep throwing the ball to set up the run and Sapp, Sands and Warren have got to step upup next week!!!

  22. Madumb Raider slapper Says:

Hey Terrapin, don’t expect the media to report facts. I know, I know, it’s their job, but c’mon don’t be expecting such service.

  23. RayGuy8 Says:

Huff24 says: “Al Davis was the first person to say that he wanted Leinart, CLEARLY putting the blame on Art Shell for choosing Michael Huff.”

Not true. First of all, you’re taking what was said completely out of context; they weren’t talking about who was at fault, they were talking about whether or not Raiders’ coaches have any say in who the team drafts. Below is what Tim Kawakami reported was said at the press conference. Do you see the name Matt Leinart in there anywhere? To my knowledge, Al Davis has NEVER said he wanted to draft Matt Leinart. So why do people like you keep insisting he did?

“I asked him if his praise about Kiffin’s recruiting coordinatorship means that Kiffin will have more personnel power than other recent Raider coaches.
“All the coaches had say,” Davis said. “He’ll have the same.”
You’re telling me Art Shell had the same kind of authority? In the draft he’ll have authority?
“You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about,” Davis said. “They’re all involved in the draft. Who do you think picked Huff last year?”
Not you? I thought it was you, Al.
    “Well, you thought wrong.””

  24. Raiderswon'twinagain Says:

SS might have lost his job. He doesn’t play and his replacement makes tackles. The line played well today. The kept Gallery at LG which seems like a better position for him.

Likes like J Russ won’t play against Denver. Since this is Kiff’s first time seeing opponents for the second time, it will be interesting his adjustments against Denver.

Need to stop the run, as they pass rush played better today. Dante, played well, NO INTS, rolled out, had some great passes some dropped balls.

    RUN FARGAS RUN>

  25. Bob Marley Says:

    Huff24

    There…rayguy8….also calling you out….

Really, let it go….why don´t you just call it a night and see how you feel tomorrow?

  26. rodmoney Says:

    Great,
Huff has an int. and the D made a key stop. making plays=wins baby. I don’t think there will be any Mc fans lobbying for him to start for you see Kiff no longer plays the drama game which goes a long way with team morale knowing who is leading them into next week’s game.TheNation will be rabid this weekend and would love to see the team play more aggressively and with more discipline on running plays. Only then will we be victorious for the Broncs will be desperate as we should be as well so expect anything from both sides. I beleive Daunte managed the game very well and Porter played his a!###ss off so give him his props for an outstanding game. Huggy Jr. you the man. Now if we keep our secondary as is with Eugene out there we can get the opponent to the ground. Of course we need to upgrade at the position and get a SS/ST player with Coop gone, I say bring Bing back . Committment to ?Excellence.

  27. r-r-r-raidersssssss Says:

For one thing guys keep your eyes on Clemmons, he will be a force to be reckoned with, I read an article on him earlier, a hungry player, released by the skins after they gave
up on him, I like him alot, if we can keep Burgess who is getting healthy it turns a position that we maybe thought was a question into a strength. If anybody read that article let me know where it is.
As for Mr Cable, our offense line will become a strength, Pepp is getting healty and he is getting a grasp of the offense, but the reason he wasn’t on his back was definitely not because he is the Pepp of old it is because OLINE operated like a unit and the threat of the
run kept the defense guessing. It is easy to see if you can run they have to respect that and not just pin their ears back and try and kill the QB, just my opinion. GO RAIDERS

  28. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

first off, totally psyched that f’in streak is over….both actually.

i am (still) disappointed with our “D”. this may be splitting hairs, but where’s the creativity? we should’ve been blitzing the shit out of croyle. plus, we still can’t stop the run. stupid high school stuff: overpursuit and poor tackling.

however, a win is a win, and at this point, i’m sure we’ll all take it.

  29. RayGuy8 Says:

I can’t believe Philadelphia is letting New England off the hook. I still say the Pats are ripe for the taking. I will be very surprised if they go all the way.

  30. Bob Marley Says:

    And Huff24…

What the hell are you doing bringing up Al Davis´s name after a win anyway??….

As a member of the Al hate club you should know that rules 1 and 2 are:

1.- Raiders win, no mention of Davis at all.

2.- Raider lose, Blame it on Davis.

Come on man you know better than that.

  31. Bob Marley Says:

    I know guy8…..damn Feely with that pick….

  32. RayGuy8 Says:

He was playing a heck of a game until then. Oh, well.

  33. Bob Marley Says:

Actually… I´d rather see the pats go 16-0 and then somehow lose in the playoffs…that ought be heartbreaking….15 and 1 teams have lost before in the playoffs, but to go 16-0 and have nothing to show for..man that would be hilarious.

  34. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

    mark this down…..

the steelers will beat the patriots(hopefully in january). i think the eagles just gave the rest of the league a pretty good blueprint for success

  35. oakglenn Says:

As with the losses, this was a team win. Now everyone, the offensive line PLAYED WELL!!! Against a good Kansas Shitty Defensive line, no less. The O line played an EXCELLENT GAME. Everyone gets props. O, D, ST, Coaches, fans, team win. Team win in a very hostile environment! This team might have learned a tiny bit of what it takes to win, 60 minutes, big plays, good calls, Coaches GOING FOR IT, not being conservative, Run Defense making a play, WHEN IT MATTERED MOST.

  36. Dakota Says:

I didn’t see the game as I was on the road, and no one shows substantial highlights from a game featuring a couple of crap teams, but it appeared from the box score and articles I read that it was a typical Raider game except we finally found a way to hold onto that 4th quarter lead. At this point a win is a win…something to build on…nothing to get excited about. Let’s beat Denver and show that we have improved and learned from our past mistakes.

    Congrats to Huff…about f#@$ing time.

  37. oakglenn Says:

And BTW, wasn’t it, if my memory serves me well, a big win in Kansas Shitty late in the season, that kick started the Gruden era??

  38. patrick Says:

The monkey is off their back… And this should build momentum for next week against Denver…

    http://mvn.com/nfl-raiders/

  39. tien Says:

Hopefully Fargas will get good enough so that broadcasters will pronounce his name correctly instead of VARGAS.

  40. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

to the D’s credit, they did only allow like 40-50 rush yards in the 2nd half, which was good. still how many freakin times did we intially stop smith at the LOS only to have him fall foward for 4-5 yards?!

  41. Terrapin Says:

Allow me to correct a statement I made. …K.Smith actually averaged 4.8ypc

  42. RAIDERHATERHATER Says:

WHeres that stupid ahole from KC when you want him? Your team just got trounced by the “Faders”…who’s fading now mr lost 4 in a row butthole? next on the list…donkeys…GO RAIDERS.

  43. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

very true oakglenn. i’m excited to see what kiffin and co can do against denver. that being said, if the D pulls the same shit next week as it did in the first half today, the RB for denver will rush for 200.

  44. Bob Marley Says:

That Croyle kid´s numbers are nothing to writte home about, but he has a good arm and showed some good stuff.

Looks like AFC West future is set and it´s gonna be Cutler, Rivers, Croyle and Russell battling it out for the next 10 years.

  45. Terrapin Says:

I think Crolye may be decent but he’s not that good. (Or hasn’t shown me enough yet.)

Cutler will be good - not great - but pretty good

Rivers is OVERRATED! - he’s really NOT that good

JRussell has the most physical skills out the bunch. He may be the best - I’m bias - but trying to be fair. Only time will tell.

  46. Terrapin Says:

I take it back. I did see pretty good things out of Croyle that he can build on. I’m just reminded of how BAD he looked in preseason. I’ll withhold judgement. He may be a fairly good QB.

  47. into deep AKA "In Too Deep" Says:

In my own Raider glory but if only for a day:

My daughter won 3 tickets to Qualcomm Stadium today for her participation in the punt,
pass and kick contest. As we drove in the parking lot in our lifted black F-150. We started to hearing the chants RAIDERS SUCK! RAIDERS SUCK! when they saw my rear window sheild
in its full glory, its amazing how much emotion comes from that simple emblem jealosy is
a bitch. Although I thought my truck was toast by the end of the day! It survived.

While in the stadium I felt compelled to carry on when I saw the score 20-17 RAIDERS

  48. #87 Dave Casper Says:

To all you Fans that complain all the time, the offense moved the ball and the “bend but don’t break” defense stopped them on 4th & 1. Can you see that Kiffin & Company are improving this team, we finally finished a game & Culpepper didn’t look to bad today. Start supporting our team & it should start this coming weekend vs Denver. Today enjoy the victory NATION we are officially better than last season….

  49. into deep AKA "In Too Deep" Says:

opps *hit hit the wrong key. anyway too make a long story short got to sit next to
chargers #97 Dad and wife very classy. he’s a decent player although he did go
against Ogden quite a bit Ogden is a man amoung men.

Its a been a great day I can only hope Raiders can continue to win as well as the other
bottom dwellers so we can keep are draft positioning. bring on Mcfadden. We can’t let all that loosing go to waste!!

  50. #87 Dave Casper Says:

Mcfadden will never be a Raider!!!

  51. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

agreed terrapin….rivers is WAY overrated. he has the luxury of handing off the best back in the game.

been listing to alot of talk radio…WTF is with evryone getting a boner over the 6-5 san diego chargers?? they are a shell of what they were last year, yet evryone still loves them.

  52. Bob Marley Says:

No doubt Terrapin, Talent wise Russell and Cutler are way over the other 2. Not even close.

Rivers reminds of me of Bernie Kosar and that maybe his ceiling (Kosar was good by the way so Rivers can only hope), while Croyle is handcuffed by KC´s conservative offense, I think he can play and be a 10 year starter. And if you consider that teams are picking up 44 year olds out of the couch due to the lack of talent at the position, I ´d say KC should be happy they have him.

But only Cutler and Russell have elite potential.

  53. into deep AKA "In Too Deep" Says:

then the Raiders will make something else work there is too much pride!

  54. DYNOMITE Says:

We ended 3 streaks 2day - 17 straight against our division, 9 straight against the chefs and our overall 6 game losing streak but the 1 streak that really pisses me off is the 30+ game streak of not scoring an opening posession touchdown. I hope that streak comes to an end sunday against the donkeys b/c we have to take adv. of field postion and t.o. and not just settle for field goals!!!

Btw, IMO, the only senerio I can c JR playin is if we have a pretty sizeable lead in the fourth quarter and I hope it happens cuz I wanna c JR debut @ home.

Raiders 4 life - Im always IN!!!!

  57. Blackholepriest Says:

Jerry if you haven’t noticed one team scoring after the other team scores happens quite frequently in this league it’s just not the Raiders defense that gives up points after the offense scores it happens all over the league.
I’ll say it again this is a team game, if your defense gets scored on , the offense has to take upon themselves to score, that’s what all good teams do. If Daunte can continue to improve we will have the ability to do that. His play over the last 2 weeks is what this team has been desparate for. The leadership that he brings will give this team confidence that they can compete.
They can start to play more relaxed knowing that the offense will put up points and now the defense will began to play a lot looser and with more confidence. Mistakes will start to disappear and more big plays will result from that.
Had Daunte played like this earlier we would have won a lot more games. Now we can see what this team is really capable of.

  58. Bob Marley Says:

    Raider Glory…

    LOL…you might as well.

  59. oakglenn Says:

Well, we just kicked Kansas, Denver looks terrible, and we all know the Discharge is gonna start circling the drain. Who does that leave??? You guessed it. Us. What I’ve been harking on now for weeks is we’re gonna haveta draft D linemen probably in the first round. Clearly we need help in our run defense. More so than Rivers, Cutler, and Croyle is the fact the AFC West is arguably the best running division in the NFL and we arguably have the worst Run D in the NFL. That HAS to change. And it’s not Ryans fault.

  60. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

a win’s a win DAVE CASPER, but you can deny our run defense IS NOT improving. that crap doesn’t fly at any level. we won, but no one here or in that locker room should be satified. if kiffin and al plan on playing in january in the next few years, this is were we’ve gotta get better. to a man, i’d much rather see a 9 to 7 game where our opponent gets 40 yards on the ground rather than a game like today. i know it not “chic” to like defensive (or boring) football, but bring on the “D”, paaaa-leeeeeze.

  61. Blackholepriest Says:

BTW Justin Fargas is pretty good. Hopefully even his harshest critics have finally figured that out. But I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some that still don’t get it. This kid is legit, but I’ve been saying that for 3 years. This team really has some nice components, we just needed the QB position to get straightened out. And finally I think we have that.

  62. Blackholepriest Says:

Hey!! …….where are all the Seabass bashers, haven’t heard from you lately. WHAT A WASTED 1st rndr he is. That stupid Al Davis.

  63. Bob Marley Says:

    oakglenn..

And I know blackhole gets riled up with this talk…but….

Anyway I´m out and see you gentlemen tomorrow, Oh man.. I´m gonna sleep good tonight…

  64. Raider Glory Says:

    DAMNED those Raiders!!

Why are they making Al Davis look good??

    I HATE THEM!!!

    GO RAIDAAAASSS!!!

  65. DYNOMITE Says:

I said it a few weeks ago that when u hit rock bottom there is nowhere 2 go but up! I think that its evident by the 3 play scoring drive 2day what this offenseis capable of doing when they play smart and together no matter the situations or atmosphere. And to think that we haven’t even inserted JR or MB into the mix. With the other three teams in the division struggling, I think that we will b challenging them all 4 the title next year b/c as badly as we have been thus far, a few plays here or there and we could as easily been up there this year. Whatcha guys think?

  66. Raider Glory Says:

    Where was Schweigert??

    THANK GOD…………HE DID”NT PLAY!!

  68. Bob Marley Says:

    We think you´re right

  69. Bob Marley Says:

And like someone else posted before…..remeber all those people who were outraged that we cut Joe Echemandu and kept Fargas?

  70. DYNOMITE Says:

Yea Blackholepriest, u tell em all cuz it’s just a matter of time when Seabass shatters that field goal record and kicks a 65+ yard field goal that will probably never b broken!!!!!

  71. Bob Marley Says:

Joe Echemandu was last seen gettin 1 carry for 2 yards and a fumble on week 11….just in case you were wondering.

  72. Chris in NY Says:

I don’t blame Herm for going for it. His kicker is shoddy and our run defense is terrible. You might remember the Chiefs went for it on 4th down early in the game and their rookie running back went for 19 yards. If they get that yard, there’s a good chance they win the game. Kudos to the defense for finally stepping up and making a big play in crunch time.
Congrats to Huff. He’s really showing improvement every week. He’s not there yet, but he might still become the playmaker the Raiders wanted when they picked him.
Congrats to Janikowski. He’s hitting the ball better than ever before in his career. I know it’s a longshot, but if he finishes the season like he’s been kicking the last month, he might deserve a Pro Bowl spot. The way he’s hitting it right now there’s not a kicker in the league I’d rather have.
Nice to get another win, especially when it breaks the Chiefs and the AFC West losing streaks.
I don’t care about draft position. I’d rather see the Raiders build some momentum and beat up on some more teams this season.
    Nice win, guys.

  75. into deep AKA "In Too Deep" Says:

Raider Glory I’m into schweigert either especially after watching Ed Reed up and close

  76. Terrapin Says:

Priest, while I don’t really agree w/ you on the defensive assessment (I think you are a little too forgiving here), I do agree with the Seabass assessment. I stood by the guy. I wrote before that you just don’t give up on a kicker with a leg like that. Straighten up the accuracy problem and he’s the effing MAN!

Honestly, it feels damn good. When I’m watching the O, I’m just saying to myself (tv), “just get the ball to the 40″ or somewhere close to get into Seabass’s money range. Just think about that. If they’re a scoring threat if they cross the 45/40 yard line. A very good chance of 3pts. Not many teams can say that if any.

  77. Terrapin Says:

That pretty much shortens the field for the RAIDERS to be able to score, even if its just 3pts

  78. Raider Glory Says:

Schweigert was supposedly out because of a hurt calf muscle!!

But I doubt it, I think he was out because he SUCKS!!!

Either way, Im glad we won and I’m glad Eugene filled in for him!!

Hopefully Eugene plays next week vs. the Broncos as well!!

  79. DYNOMITE Says:

I know that this may seem kinda far-fetched rite now but I think that we have a legit shot to upset the colts. Sum of u may think that I’m crazy for posting this and may say that I don’t know what I’m talking about or that the fact our team finally won a game, now we aren’t gonna lose again but lets look at the facts. The colts barely won at home against the same chefs we just beat 2day. The dis-chargers had 6 picks against Manning and still should of lost if Vin. makes the field goal and the broncos lost a full strength colts team then. The colts r obviously not a full strength missing freeney, harrison, ugoh is banged up as is dallas clark so upsetting them is possible. Lets face it folks, who in here thought that we would have upset the then world champions Steelers last year - I for 1 didn’t think so and I know that most of u didn’t either.

  80. Blackholepriest Says:

Stopping the run is mostly discipline staying true to the defense, getting your fits and TACKLING. that’s how you play the run. Our frontline of course must be more physical at the point, but the rest is shedding blocks and tackling. We get wired to blockers and we’re not quick to shed and make the play. That’s just being commited and playing fast. The talent is mostly there on defense the rest is on the players. Here’s to hoping Stu stays out!

  81. oakglenn Says:

Hey you never heard me bad mouth Fargas. I’ve always liked the guy. Schweigert I’m not high on but, he has a softball sized blood filled welt on his leg, hence why I don’t bad mouth my guys. It is rough out there.

  82. DYNOMITE Says:

Ur rite Terrapin, not 2 many teams can say that cuz there 2 busy scoring T.D.s that they don’t have 2 worry about shortening the field. Althought I’m not tryin 2 bash u or b sarcastic, I’m just sayin that we have 2 b able to take adv. of starting field postion @ midfield or turnovers. Just like 2day when MH intercepted the ball and we only managed 3 measly points. We had four turnovers in the first half last week against Minn. and think we ended up with only 9 points. Good teams usually make u pay for things like that and unfortunately were not a good team yet. I know that evening scoring 3 points is great but when u D is constantly unable to stop the run then 3 points isn’t really gonna help much. We need T.D.s plain and simple!!!

  84. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

this is “shoulda, coulda, woulda” stuff, but the raidahs haven’t really suffered any decisive loses this year. maybe houston or SD, but both games were close within 5 minutes to go. point here is, even at 3-8 we’re still competitive and CAN’T be overlooked by any opponent. same can’t be said of the last 2-3 years. we were a speedbumb in most games, but not this year. a couple calls or bounces go our way this year and we’re taliking about a 7-4, 8-3 football team. it’s not that farfetched.

however, 3-8 is the reality. but at least there is light at the end of THIS tunnel

  85. Blackholepriest Says:

Terrapin I’m not at all saying the defense gets a pass. If that’s what you think then you’re definitely reading me wrong. I’m simply saying that there are times when we need the offense to finish a game. Boths sides needs to wash the other. Our defense is nowhere near what I would like to see, but that’s not gonna change anytime soon, so if the offense can put up me points that will go a long way towards getting some wins.

  86. Raider Glory Says:

    Oakglenn,

Believe me, I backed Schweigert from the day he came out of Purdue. Everyone thought that he would be the second comming of Rod Woodson or Vann McElroy!! I have given up on him!! I think he stinks!! He doe’nt hit hard, doesnt tackle well, and runs side by side with the WR/RB for about 30 yrds before he decides to tackle him!! Im fed up with him!! He SUCKS!! IMO!! And you can call me out when he plays a great game……Thats how confident I am that his days in Oakland are numbered!! I say we keep using Eugene at Safety!!

  89. Raider Dell Says:

    BHP,
I know Michael Huff get bad mouthed here a lot, but if you look at the stats of the AFC west tight ends , he has done a outstanding job. I just looked at the stats vs Gonzalez for two games and His one game against Gates was very good and denver tight ends had no success.
So if we drafted him to play those guys he has shut them down very good, compared to the rest of the teams that play our division foes.
Gonzalez had no receptions in the first half, game totals 3 receptions 48yards, nuff said.
Gates today against the Ravens lit them up, against a very good defense.

  90. Raider Dell Says:

Keep Huff at strong safety and look for a free safety in the draft, placing Huff at the free safety will only hurt our defense.

  91. DYNOMITE Says:

Burgess has 4 sacks and getting better. Clemons has 6 sacks!!! Y isn’t he starting opposite Burgess?

  92. Raider Glory Says:

    Raider Dell,

Huff is playing much better these days, and he deserves credit for stopping Gonzales today!! I really hope he continues to improve. He does a hell of a job on those tight ends!! NOW if only some of his success can carry over to STU!!

  93. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

    agreed blackholepriest….completely

stopping the run (as tackling is) is a “want to” thing. there is only a couple of guys on our D that look like they don’t mind contact.(hint: they play linebacker)

i do have to say, though, this is a FAST defense. this can hurt them sometimes through overpursuit, but with proper coaching and technique could be brutal to gameplan for.

if i were a bettin man, rob ryan has only 5 games left as the DC of the oakland raiders.

  94. Raider Dell Says:

I am a die hard raider fan, I just watched the KC game again. I tried to look at different players and noticed Cooper Carlisle is having not only a good year but had a great game today.
he doesn’t get too many props here or bad props, probably a good thing for a lineman.
That was a good FA pickup.
Also Gallery did pretty good today, on the Fargas touchdown run he had a good block, and graded out well today.

  95. Terrapin Says:

I didn’t take offense to that DYNOMITE. I understand where you are coming from. We can’t kick FGs all day. I’m just saying as far as my watching the game I take comfort from the fact that if the RAIDERS pass the 40yd line, that pretty much garauntees some pts on the board. Nothings garaunteed, but the way Seabass is kicking …?? And Seabass 2 kicks proved very valuable in the end.

Oh and Priest, before I leave, I posted this sometime ago, but I don’t think you got the opportunity to read it.

Remember when we were discussing JRs speed? Well, I was doing some web surfing at work and came across SI.com’s 40time on him. And what do you know?!? - they pegged him @ a 4.65 forty time. I guess you were right. ….he does have pretty damn good speed (I wonder how much he wieghed during this clocking? Nevertheless, thats still very fast for a QB).

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2007/draft/players/5736.html

  98. Blackholepriest Says:

Huff’s been solid all year long. You’ll see this defense get better as they play together longer and add talent where needed. This is a very young defense. The moves they made early in the year are paying off, but we lacked leadership, consistent quality play at the QB position and trust me , it affected the entire team.

  99. Richard Bentley Says:

Even though the Raiders were lucky to win, this is the kind of game that can turn things around. I thought from the beginning that it was going to take at least 7 games to shape things up. Thank God they didn’t move Gallery away from guard. Duante showed how efficient he can be, and I think Kiffin is learning that he has to be aggressive with his offense. The Raiders have two rush ends now, and that will help. If they ever develop discipline (is this whistling in the dark?) on defense, they could take themselves somewhere. They still need a speed receiver (or two), safeties, stability at quarterback, and some depth at offensive line. If that happens, it won’t until at least next season. I never thought this was a playoff team, and I felt Kiffin was getting a mulligan for this season if he won enough games to look respectable. But things are looking up. Good for them.

  100. oakglenn Says:

This team played late in the game with more CONFIDENCE than I have seen in Years. That, to me at least, was the difference. Dell, you are COMPLETELY RIGHT. Huff has come in and really shut Gates and Gonzales down. You guys should have seen Gates OWN Balti-less. He must have had three TD’s. I think Huff has done a great job this year. Teams really stay away from him. Glory, I’m with ya. I wish Stu graded out better. If this team wins in Oakland on Sunday, maybe they can turn the corner. Green Bay did that last year. Won their lastfour games and look what happened this year. I was telling everyone GB is gonna be good this year. Not great, but good. Maybe we can get some confidence and turn the corner.

Sure these meaningless W’s hurt our draft order, but a W is a W and its

  105. oakglenn Says:

Richard, nice comments. Completely concur. That win tho, wasn’t lucky. I admire Edwards for going for it on fourth. Like our run defense is going stop anyone. And when it mattered, they did. The D made the play. Brayton was in the mix, along with the tackles and LB’s. That wasn’t lucky.

  107. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

the broncos are completely punchless. besides that marshall kid, they don’t really have any talent on offense. cutler has a shot to be a stud, but right now he’s very average. just as the raiders could be 7-4 or 8-3, the broncos could be 2-9 or even 0-10. i live amongst bronco fans, and the prevailing thought is they blow…..i agree.

if the raidahs can keep “denver-running-back” from running downhill and or using cutback lanes this could be something we(raider fans) haven’t seen in a while; a comfy 4th quarter, and an easy win.

  110. MaddenRaider Says:

I’ll mention Al Davis when we win, and say that he had nothing to do with today’s win other than hiring Kiffin.

We won today with a run heavy offense, you know, the same one Bob Marley, my emotionally disturbed clone “Mad Dumb Raider”, and the other towel boys at Raiders headquarters would be criticizing tonight had the Chiefs won.

We ran the ball 29 times, and passed 22 times. We passed for a total of 159 yards. You Al worshipers should know that 159 passing yards is about a couple hundred short than what the old man likes to see. We did not go out there and stretch the field vertically and strike fear into the opposing secondary. We kept it on the ground. And, we were only able to complete those couple of long ones because KC was playing the run.

Where’s the props for Kiffin, and his system? Again, had we lost today, you guys know good and well you would be BLAMING our run heavy offense.

I’m actually excited about today’s win. What I saw today was similar to the team I saw in September. We ran the ball effectively, Culpepper got rid of the ball, and the team played with a swagger. We didn’t go out there like it was 1967 and try to throw the ball 40 times and run it 5 times, the way Al Davis likes to. We ran a modern offense, and the team responded. I say, job well done. But I’ll give the credit where it’s due: KIFFIN’S SYSTEM. Thank you Al Davis, for hiring him. Now enjoy the win and stay out of sight.

  111. Bishop916 Says:

Yeah the O finally coming up with drives that end in 6(7) is much more rewarding in the end than settling for 3 like we had been the past few weeks. I thought that settling for 3 with the Huff INT was a bit disappointing but it was made up for in the end. Man, Fargas is coming on strong the past few weeks, ending with a big 14yd TD and the couple of big runs at the end to seal the game.

Altogether much nicer to praise the team than bitch about the shortcomings.
Sure there are things that could have been better, much better, but I’m just taking the W and letting the good times roll!

See Madden Raider you don’t know what you’re talking about. The great Raiders teams of the past would smash you over and over and over and over again with the run. It will help the Run defense which is absolute garbage, AND the pass defense, if we can get heat up the gut. mcfadden or a stud reciever is a sexy pick, but we need a stud DT or two to shore up the run defense. we have, i believe, two of the best young linebackers in the league. a lot of casual fans forget a DT’s main job(not unlike an OL) is keep bodies off the LBs. when OLs are allowed to get to the “2nd level”, the stu-schweigerts of the world start whiffing tackles and…poof…your run defense blows.

    sound familiar to anyone???

  128. lefty 12 Says:

our whole def. isn’t bad-just the run def.we have good lbs,a very good def backfield, and we occasionally put good pressure on the qb-but we cannot stop the run-didn’t last year, can’t this year.admitting that does not make you a bad fan.

  129. lefty 12 Says:

while stu’s not the next tatum,he saves more plays than he misses.huff actually misses more tackles than stu.

  130. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

    totally lefty 12…

we do have talent on D. if we had a better d-line, specifically DT, none of us would be aware of how bad a tackler schweigert is. he takes a lot heat–much of it deserved–but he shouldn’t be making tackles; linebackers should. if our DTs would eat more blocks, stu wouldn’t have to get his nose dirty, intead, our LBs could be making all the plays.

  131. into deep AKA "In Too Deep" Says:

It just took me 3 times as long to do routine paperwork because of this site its freeking addicting. The sacrifices we must make durring football season! adios its off to bed and back to reality Go Raiders!

  132. Blackholepriest Says:

How many times would you like it to be admitted, or can’t you read? a blind man can see we can’t stop the run, it’s all tooo obvious

  133. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

    i agree….

neither huff OR stu set the world on fire. but, as i mentioned, NFL safeties shouldn’t be getting a paycheck to be run-stuffers…..that’s a lineman and linebacker’s job.

if a player in your secondary is leading your team in tackles, you have a very bad defense.

  134. lefty 12 Says:

RGLC-exactly.and it’s quite possible if stu didn’t constantly have to support the run so much,he could make more plays in the passing game.maybe-maybe not.when you’re the last line of def,and you’re the one that has to make most of the tackles,it’s hard to concentrate on the passing game.you also can’t take the chance of laying someone out if nobody is behind you.

  135. lefty 12 Says:

BHP,i’m not trying to argue with you,but you always say we have the talent and i don’t see it on our run def.

  136. Blackholepriest Says:

While all of that is true, No safety on this team has led the team in tackles in the last 15- 20 years. Stu just needs to make the play when it’s available or else sitdown. Our LB’s lead the defense in tackles by far. Stuart is not a playmaker he plays scared………..period

  137. lefty 12 Says:

BHP-i enjoy your comments, just as i have enjoyed listening to your phone calls over the years.i really used to enjoy your go arounds with pete franklin.you have a great passion for the raiders,i guess we just disagree on our talent level.

  138. Blackholepriest Says:

Come on man figure it out. They don’t play good run defense because they’re not sound in the scheme. YOU MUST TACKLE and they don’t. If you look at the runs against this team, they come in spurts. They are not consistent, we make several stops and then give up a big run that’s just a lack of discipline not talent. The Minnesota game and the SD charger game was the only games that I saw where we really sucked consistently and guess where those teams rank in the run game, they’re outstanding. WE LACK DISCIPLINE. Sands needs to occupy the center better and tie up the guard we need penetration up front from the 3 tech and everyb ody else just get their fits and TACKLE. That’s not talent that’s discipline and want to and a lot of technigue.

  139. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

even though this year’s been disappointing, we’re really only one or two players on defense away from being an elite unit. we are exceptional at linebacker and we have a decent secondary. it seems our scheme never matches our personnel. i really wish we had a ted washington or sam adams-type tackle in front of those speedy linebackers. i thought terdell would be this type of player, but the jury’s still out. tommy kelly comming back and maybe getting a big DT via draft day would be a big help.

  140. Blackholepriest Says:

Kansas Cities run defense is very good LOOK what we did to it today. Stopping the run is just being physical with good technigue.

  141. lefty 12 Says:

ok they’re not disciplined.they’re still not getting the job done.you can have all the so called “TALENT” in the world but if you’re not getting the job done, you’re not a good player.sims is probably our most talented OL,but he isn’t our best OL.we know what they have to do but they don’t do it.therefore we should get someone who will do it.

  142. Blackholepriest Says:

Losing Tommy Kelly hurt us bad. Sam Williams inconsistency is also a problem. He as playing great and so was Tommy and they both went down

  143. lefty 12 Says:

by the way,r dayne,c taylor,& k smith didn’t bust any really long runs against us.they just chipped away.your statement is correct concerning our early games, but not the last few weeks.

  144. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

yeah, we could use a SLB. i love morrison at middle, but he seems like more an OLB to me. it would be great to pick up a veteran LB to play middle and move KM outside. a couple of mountains at DT and speed at OLB…watch out

  145. lefty 12 Says:

the lose of kelly was devastating, but a least it opened the door for clemens.we would be better off if kelly were in the middle.he was having a very good year.we need more players with his motor.that’s all i’m trying to say.

  146. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

i’m tired and startin to talk out of my ass….

great day today, let’s sleep on it and kick some f’in bronco ass next weekend.

    peace all

  147. Blackholepriest Says:

Sims problem is false starts and an occasional bad game against a speed rusher. Yes if you consistently do not play well they will get rid of you. There’s no question we need to play better, ALL AGREED. but that doesn’t mean this defense has NO talent that’s definitely NOT true
It is true the talent needs to CONSISTENTLY play well then you’ve got a contender.

  148. lefty 12 Says:

a run stuffing MLB in the mold of millen or biekert(?) would be great.not only did they stuff the run, they were exellent field generals-always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.we should fill that need through the draft considering our recent sucess at drafting LBs.

  149. Blackholepriest Says:

    I’m tired too. later!

  150. lefty 12 Says:

BHP,my question to you is-how you keep playing the same people year after year if you don’t get that consistency.there has to be a time when enough is enough, regardless of the hidden talent.imo we should make changes because we’re not getting that consistency with the players we’re using now.it’s not like they’re all rookies

  151. lefty 12 Says:

correction-how long do you keep …..

  152. rodmoney Says:

We won which i am content with for a couple of days but then it’s back to work. With Coop gone we need to pick up a SS/ST player and hopefully a DT or two to plug up the huge holes in our run defense. I believe Hiram will fare well in our secondary for you can’t improve if yu don’t play. Our OL played very well as did Cul, Farg and Porter. We have to continue to make plays, cut down or eliminate the penalties and it will be difficult to keep us winning key games.Come on back to the Nation and shine once again Sunday. Just Win Again Baby!!

  153. r-r-r-raidersssssss Says:

That was the best Sunday in along time! My wife said I am an antisocial case,
said I hate people, I should get more friends, well I live 35min from cleveland,
I told her we should move to Oakland!!!!!!!!!!On 10 min after the game ended, been
on and off allnight, Thanks for the win team, thanks for the fun fanatics or should I say Raiderholics…DEATH TO THE DONKEYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Good Night and Al
    bless!(obviously I am in….sane)

  154. r-r-r-raidersssssss Says:

One more thing, just watch as the OLINE keeps improving how Fargus stats get better
as more and more often Dbacks have to tackle that nutcase!

  155. JediRaider Says:

Hey great win Raider Nation - too those questioning the assertion that we could be 7-4 or 8-3, the truth is we should be, and if this team *really* bought *IN*, we would be - so many close games and Kiff gave us a chance - even the ones that weren’t close at the end, we could have won, and good teams (like us circa 2002) would have won - Kiff has done a great job this season and his consisent message has finally hit home - it’s not about them, it’s about us - he put us in situations nearly every week to win, and the team finally made plays at the end to *FINISH* the game. Congrats all around, we really need to build momentum going into these last five games to build confidence in our core young guys so they know from a win-loss point of view that they are improving - it’s one thing to say we know we’re better than last year, but it’s got to show up in the W column - today, we’re one W better than last year with 5 tough games to go (other than the donks) - if we can pull out 2 or 3 of those, including a big one against the Colts or Chargers, then we’ll really be set up for next year to continue the process - we’re still a D line, #1 WR, and O line away from contending, but a couple more pieces and we might challenge for the AFC West Title (Thanks, Norv).

Let’s beat the Donks and create some havoc over the last month and a half and see where the chips fall at the end of the season.

Speaking of which, we need to go to a cover 2 scheme next year - T-how is perfect for the Tampa 2, Nnamdi to FS, and a couple of FA’s and Draft picks and our D could be dominant with that scheme. I like Ryan as a motivator-type, but it’s time to move on - no team should give up 150 to Kolby Smith - it wasn’t like he made plays, the holes were ridiculous - either a Tampa 2 or a 3-4 (dump Sapp and trade Burgess for picks) next year would be awesome, I’m tired of pure man-to-man coverage - that’s half our problem - impossible to be a great D when the other team knows what you’re running every play.

Kiff’s going to finish cleaning house after this season and our path back to glory starts next year with a good drafts, couple of FA’s, and JaMarcus + Bush!!! I’m In. GOOD JOB KIFF!!!

  156. JediRaider Says:

I’m just going to add the specifics of what I think Kiff has done, because I think it’s important to us long time Raider fans pass on to the newer fans that what we’re witnessing is a first - the Raiders have always been winners. (Emphasis on the Period!). This is the first time since the glory years of the 60’s 70’s 80’s 90’s and early 00’s that we’ve officially been in a rebuilding mode. At our worst we had an off-season or two, could beat anybody on any given sunday and from my recollection, in the pre-season of our previous years, at least a few sportswriters had us pegged for the division winners in the AFC West. Big Al was right, we never rebuilt, we just reloaded. We just had 10 years of 8-8 draft picks or better, burned a ton of money on FA’s to get to the championship, and it only recently caught up with us when brown, rice, Gannon, Kennedy, Wisnewski, romonowksi, r. woodson, etc. etc. retired and/or were at the end of thier careers or left due to salary cap (Robbins, Biekert, C. Woodson, Tory James, etc. etc. etc.) - we’ve done a helluva job rebuilding since 02. We’ve had our share of misses in the draft, but we’ve also had some big hits - Nnamdi, Morrison, Howard, Fargas, Curry, and some FA’s like Sapp and Burgess - our new guys, Miller, Richardson, Routt, Washington also are looking good and Bush and Russell may be a strong duo next year - we need a great #1 WR to give us “tripletts”, but with our Zone Blocking scheme, it looks like we’ve got 2 of the 3 and can pick up strong Olinemen next year in the later rounds since we’ll be looking at the undersiezed guys - I feel really good about the direction of the team and today’s win was the fruition of all Kiff’s vision for the team - make it count when it matters - he’s been really consistent, and although I’m sure he’d agree that he might have been able to win a game or two more this season if he had been more aggressive (although some gams would have been blow-outs) in his play calling, he really stuck to his game plan and put the team in the best position to win - it was simply up to them to execute and make it happen - well, it took 11 weeks and 5 “shoulda coulda woulda games” to get it done the right way, but he did it, didn’t panic, and finally his players got “it”.

Simply a great coaching job with mediocre talent at best. I just moved up to the bay area as a life-long “never say L.A.” Raider fan this year, and I haven’t been to an AFC west v. Raider game in 2 years since I lived in SD and watched Norv and KFC embarrass me, but I’ll be at the Donk game and I can’t wait for Shannarat to go down with his crew of crack heads. to “FIRE KIFFIN” - where are you now? Everybody on this blog knows he’s doing this the right way - if Al wants to dump him after this year, Kiff doesn’t care- he belives in his message, his system, and his approach to the weekly game plan, and it’s the best thing we’ve had since Gruden - I also think the players respect him more b/c he didn’t try to win games no matter what, but rather made them win games according to the game plan and his philosophy - this willl pay massive dividends down the road. He’s teaching them how to be great - not passable - and that’s what we want. I’m sure we could be 6-5 or 7-4 right now if Kiff just decided to let it rip no matter what, but he’s challenged the team to win the right way - run, stop the run, make plays, and finish the game. Mike Tomlin will probably get it, but Kiff should win the Coach of the year award - everybody second guessed Kiff’s strategy, but I know in the coming weeks, the lesson we learned today (how to finish) is going to be the foundation for the next Raiders dynasty. Kiff Rules!

  157. Hobs Gnarly Says:

Man,you jokers, the Raiders got that game handed to them and you act like you won the super bowl. Edwards clearly thought your team a bunch of wussies and didn’t even bother to hide the fact that it was a base running play on fourth and one. I guess you can polish that turd at least for one game.

Al Davis still sucks, he had nothing to do with this win. Unless he bribed Herm.

  158. El Tato Says:

Fargas had a great game against KC and is playing much better, stays lower and waits to find a hole.

But wach O’Neal and Miller in Fargas highlights in NFL.com, they both had a great game blocking. I like O’Neal better than Griffin for blocking.

  159. FIRE KIFFIN Says:

Even a broken watch is right twice a day. Go Raiders.

  160. Oaktown Raider Says:

Marley, you rock, keep up the defense of Al. How can anyone be a Raider fan and hate on Al it makes no sense. Let’s all just ignore Huff 24, he is just a little b*tch. IF you have not noticed he is the only one fighting with other people on here
