Halftime: Jaguars 28, Raiders 3
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 at 11:40 am in Oakland Raiders.
Scoring
Raiders–Sebastian Janikowski 41-yard field goal, 13:59.
Jaguars–Greg Hill 2-yard pass from David Garrard (Josh Scobee kicks PAT), 9:12
Jaguars–David Garrard 2-yard run (Scobee kicks PAT), 6:08.
Notes:
– Despite coming out of the end of a quarter, and plenty of time to get the play straight, the Raiders can’t get their personnel straight and have to call a time out to avoid a delay of game penalty.
It is the second personnel mix-up for the Raiders in the game.
– Russell has great karma. He commits a Cardinal sin _ throwing late and over the middle for Zach Miller _ and is intercpeted by rookie safety Reggie Nelson. Nelson fumbles the ball and Johnnie Lee Higgins recovers the fumble for a Raiders first down at the 25-yard line.
The Jaguars challenge the ruling, hoping for an incomplete pass. The challenge is denied.
– Russell and the Raiders can’t covert with a touchdown. Dominic Rhodes gains two yards, Russell is rushed into an incompletion on a poorly set up screen, and then throws incomplete to a double-covered Jerry Porter on a fade to the left side of the infield, with the pass going out of bounds.
Janikowski kicks a 41-yard field goal and the Raiders trail 14-3.
– The Jaguars are forced to punt for the first time, thrown off their schedule by a 6-yard Taylor loss, with Michael Huff making the tackle.
Higgins fields an Oakland punt inside the 10, returns it 2 yards to the 7, giving Russell the feel of an NFL end zone at his back.
– Russell’s quarterback rating falls to 3.6 after the Raiders lose two yards on three plays, with his lone pass shorthopping Justin Griffith while being rushed in the end zone.
– The Jaguars get a 56-yard return from Scott Starks, who took a reverse from Dennis Northcutt and raced to the 2-yard line before being run out by Stuart Schweigert. Garrard hits Greg Jones for a touchdown on the next play with 9:12 to play in the half. Jags lead 21-3.
The past three weeks, the Raiders have given up three punt returns good for 203 yards and two touchdowns, plus another which went to the 2 and set up another.
– Russell forces a pass to Ronald Curry into double coverage and Terry Cousins intercepts, returning it to the 34-yard line. His quarterback rating is 1.6.
– Garrard hits Reggie Williams for 28 yards to the 6, and two plays later sneaks in from the 2 with 6:08 remaining. The Jaguars lead 28-6.
– Russell throws a near-interception to Reggie Nelson on a terrible decision, rolling right, throwing a balloon up for grabs back to the middle _ and is sent tumbling end over end by linebacker Daryl Smith.
No less than 10 black-shirted Raiders physicians, trainers and support staff race to the opposite side of the field. McCown comes into the game. It is believed Russell had the wind knocked out of him as his passer rating falls to 0.0. (Garrard is at 156.2)
– McCown comes in and completes a 10-yard pass to Miller for a first down. Rhodes runs 25 yards deep into Jacksonville territory.
A Jaguars sack leaves the Raiders with third-and-12 at the Jaguars 28-yard- line.
– McCown hits Higgins for 8 yards to the 20, setting up fourth-and-4.
– McCown overshoots Curry on fourth down. Jacksonville takes over at the 20.
– Garrard drives the Jaguars to the Raiders 25-yard line before the Raiders stiffen, bringing up fourth-and-10 from the 25-yard line. An illegal hands to the face penalty on Tony Pashos against Derrick Burgess pushes Jacksonville back to the 35.
Warren Sapp gets a dead ball penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct before the ball is snapped, pushing the ball to the 20. Another flag flies. Burgess gets the second foul. Defensive line coach Keith Millard goes out to get Sapp, who gets his second penalty and is ejected from the game. Sapp incurs a third foul when he doesn’t leave.
Jacksonville has a first-and-goial at the 2.
– Kirk Morrison intercepts Garrard’s pass at the gaol line and returns it to the 36-yard line as the Raiders avoid giving up a touchdown on their most embarrassing sequence of the season.
McCown is forced into a fumble as the half mercifully ends. Jerry Porter and Burgess plead their cases with officials as the teams make their way off the field.

Our players lost it. I think this game is a total blowout.

December 23rd, 2007 at 11:46 am
Something went down on the field with Tony Pashos. I am eager to find out the specifics, looked to me like Pashos was up to something that caused that whole meltdown.
Jerry get us the details if you can.
Thanks in advance.

“most embarrassing sequence of the season”
i’m not embarrassed by this. i like it.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:49 am
What would you have Kiffin do? His players are acting like fools — is he supposed to run out there and punch the refs? He’s probably mentally calculating the earliest possible moment he can cut Sapp. I don’t care what the refs might have said, there is no excuse for what Sapp did. None. Zero. He has to go.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:49 am
exactly west raider, our boys need to play with this fire.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:51 am
I’m not embarrassed by it, either, because I’m only a fan. The Raiders’ organization SHOULD be embarrassed by it, however. Damn straight. Kiffin will not stand for it, either. Mark my words. Sapp is so gone it’s not funny.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:51 am
Sapp will be gone, most likely Warren will be too. Our interior D-line is a joke and is the main reason why we give up 100+ yards to Running backs every game.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:54 am
I’m telling you, something went down with Jacksonville’s #79 Tony Pashos. He was straight up choking Derrick Burgess and then he had something to say about it to Burgess and Sapp after the play. Thats when they snapped. The truth will come out, hopefully sooner rather than later.

December 23rd, 2007 at 11:54 am
I hope we will see more of JR today. Thinking of JM for the remainder is depressing.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:54 am
Embarassing moment? Correct- for the refs. Showed the NFL’s usual in going out of their way to try and penalize the Raidahs. What a friggin’ joke the NFL refs are. And there is more to this story than is known at this point. Ejecting a player for saying something? WTF!
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:54 am
i don’t think the raider organization should be embarressed either. we need this fire, now let’s have a well timed late hit here and there.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:55 am
Huff should have had that one.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:55 am
look how the d played, would not have been the case without sapp doing what he did.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:56 am
BOOGER is the worst ref in the league. His crew is just as bad as he is. I did not think we would win this game, but the referee’s are definitely helping the jags.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:56 am
2007 Busts:
M. Huff
J.L. Higgins
D. Rhodes
L. Jordan
T. Sands
S. Schweigert
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:57 am
That was some inspired D right there, 3 and out. I hope that can keep it up.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:58 am
Mike J, you like many others are forgetting about Sam Williams he is a career bust not just 2007 lets quit giving this guy a pass!
Add Sebass to the list he is garbage.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:58 am
Kris,
I believe I watched Booger ref in college. If it’s the same guy, then his incompetence is to be expected.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:58 am
Lets Go JaMarcus!!!
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:59 am
Higgins is awful. I hope something good eventually comes out of the 2007 draft. So far, it is not looking so.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:00 pm
Mistabrown,
I didn’t have expectation for S. Williams. No pass, just no expectations. Will not add Sebass. Disagree there.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:01 pm
Run on 3rd and 4 ?
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:02 pm
Wow, nice play calling there Kiff.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:03 pm
3rd abd 4 run? LOL. Piss-poor playcalling. Oh well. I said year 3 of the Kiffin Tenure will tell if we have returned to the NFL.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:03 pm
3rd and 4
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:04 pm
JaMarcus needs to learn how to make plays on 3rd down, running the ball isnt going to help.

is that what the tape shows?? The jags are cutting back on every play why are there no adjustments? We sadly needs d players that can tackle — no news there
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:06 pm
Burgess, Thomas, Huff, Eugene all out of position on both runs. The whole damned left side can’t stop a run.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:07 pm
Phoney User Name, why call yourself an idiot?
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Mike J, S. Williams was a starter before he got injured and he has been a wasted roster spot for 3 or 4 years now…
Maybe we have different ideas on a bust?
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:10 pm
Another first rounder blows it.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:10 pm
Fabian “Toast” Washington got burnned again.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:11 pm
There are lots of wholesale changes expected
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:11 pm
Dang. It looked like pretty good coverage, too. Of course Burgess is going to draw a penalty. I agree that the refs are petty and vindictive, by the way. I just happen to think that the players should have behaved more professionally, that’s all.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:12 pm
Fabian’s too short. That was a total mismatch against Jones. Good call by their OC.

Rob Ryan has to be embarrassed about his D this year. It’s obvious that we have some personnel shortfalls, like DT, DT, SSLB, FS, SS, but his scheme also sucks. This is probably Ryan’s last year with the S & B. He can take that ST coordinator with him too.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:14 pm
Mistabrown,
Yes, different interpretation.
Bust= player I had some expectations for. Example: M. Huff
Scholarship= neva should be there in the first place. Example= Alvis Whitted
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:15 pm
In the spirit of the season, I will forego comment.
Time to hit the airport….Drive safe, Lads.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:15 pm
We have spent our high draft picks on players that are not producing on the defensive side of the ball! but the TE is 6.6 going against Fab who is 6ft even. Wash
does not get an excemption due to he timed his jump late. Other teams continue to single him out and he gives them no excuse to stop
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:15 pm
F.Washington isnt too short, he just doesnt know how to look back and play the ball.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:15 pm
That was good coverage by Washington. He just is shorter than the WR. Need some good DT, SS, OL and WR in FA and draft
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Rob Ryan will end up in New York as DC for the Jets with Mangini.
I don’t see Monte coming in and taking his place though. It will be someone much younger, not related to the head coach and it will probably be someone from USC.

December 23rd, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Damn holding Penalty when it wasn’t necessary. DUMB
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:18 pm
bullsht, what an f’ing joke! did you see how many holds there was on that 95 jaguar drive? what a joke.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:20 pm
As bad as we look, this is a great learning experience for JR. It’s a process that has to happen. The good news is it doesn’t really matter this year. JR should be scheduled to play the whole game next week.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Anyone notice that during the last few weeks we have not been getting replays on the telecasts? Especially on key plays/penalties. But a fan is supposed to just accept what the league and their announcers tell us about what the NFL refs call. Ha ha ha.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:21 pm
I have to agree with you bs.

Can the Jaguar’s beat New England?
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:22 pm
agree with Bs we are getting held like crazy but will not get called esp today by this ref crew!!! Fab’s technique is lacking as well like not playing the ball as mentioned. Maybe NA needs to coach the D
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:23 pm
The NFL won’t allow it RAIDERSITH. It’s already all set up for New England to win it all.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:24 pm
I hear ya Acey40Deuce
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:26 pm
The Jags can and will beat New England. New England’s only hope is that it is unseasonably warm and pleasant when they play. If that’s the case, then the advantage goes to New England. Otherwise, look out.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:26 pm
Hey, atleast we have some future All-Star LB’s to look forward to for years to come.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:27 pm
I just noticed they have a player named ‘Fudge.’ This guy needs to play for the Packers. The jokes would never stop coming.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Is there any position on the field (or the bench)that the Raiders are better? Punter? Nhambi?
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:27 pm
There is only one chance the Patriots don’t win the SB and thats if the NFL decides to hand Bret Favre a story book ending to his career with a SB victory. Just like they did for Elway. Favre will then retire with a ring and a SB MVP trophy.

JR is getting schooled BIG TIME. It has to happen so he learns now. This is the NFL JR, not the college level players on the field.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:28 pm
kiffin is learning real fast russell should have been playing earlier this year, these are the mistakes we want to see this year, not next year.

We can’t jump on Russell just yet, he is learning the NFL. I hope he plays the entire game next Sunday.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:31 pm
JR’s completing passes only to the wrong team. If he keeps going like this he’ll have more Int’s than completions. A VERY hard lesson to learn.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:33 pm
Time for another Jag score.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:34 pm
Better to make those mistakes when the game doesnt count then opening day 2008.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:34 pm
Another great D showing (sic).
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:35 pm
Maurice Jones-Drew is going to kill someone on a running play one day. And one day my Raidahs will learn to draft football talent better. Ahh, what a dream…..
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:36 pm
I wonder hwo well JR knows the play book. Chris landry from FOX had some interesting comments on his work ethic on “The Drive” (Chris Myers) last week.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:37 pm
How in the hell did the Colts beat this team twice?
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Raidersith,
They are hopeless against the run. Good playmakers against the pass but to be an all star LB you have to stop the run or at least be able to get to the QB to be considered an all star LB in my opinion
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Joe Thomas.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:39 pm
Midwest,
What did Chris Landry say?
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:39 pm
Another long day and season for us Raider Fans it seems. Sounds like the Refs are up to their usual crap.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Okay, don’t kill the messenger. Landry said JR has never been a “fast learner” because he has a weak work ethic. He points to JR’s time in college when he was redshirted and didn’t start until his sophomore year because he couldn’t grasp the LSU offense. He thinks Kiffin hasn’t started him because because of the same reason…he doesn’t know what is going on. Landry seems to think JR is caught up in the money and more worried about new houses, cars, and gadgets. With that said, he also said he really thinks JR could be great if he gets his head straight and matures a little. He has the skills.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Why is it that Rob Ryan always looks like he’s working his ass off on the sidelines. Yet the defense does nothing?
Does anyone else notice that?
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:47 pm
What did Chris Landry say about his work ethic?
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:49 pm
never mind
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:49 pm
I love Sapp but that was stupid. Maybe the initial penalty on Sapp was uncalled for, but he should have had more presence of mind to stop after than and get his head back in the game. I think he will unfortunately now be gone after the season. He’s done with us and Kiffin is likely done with him.
Kiffin should have gone out there and got in his players faces to get them to stop. You think Gruden would have just stood by and watched??
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:50 pm
Who would win between these Raiders and this year’s 1 win Miami Dolphins?
I say the Dolphins would!
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:51 pm

Celebrating Russells first TD when they are losing 49-11 is like …….celebrating that the USS Arizona sank in 10 minutes instead of 5 minutes when the Japanese bombed pearl harbor. Not a pretty celebration!
