Churchill says Kiffin stays
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 7th, 2008 at 4:37 pm in Oakland Raiders.
While it may be fair to consider whether a team which has had seven coaches in 13 years might be on the verge of making it eight in 14, that doesn’t mean it’s likely to happen.
Common sense says that at some point within the next couple of weeks, maybe not until the Raiders coaching staff arrives in Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl, Lane Kiffin will emerge and wonder what all the fuss is about.
“Problem? What problem? I’ve been so busy evaluating the roster I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Maybe it will even be the truth, although every bit of circumstantial evidence since the end of the season, as detailed most recently by colleague Monte Poole, suggests Kiffin wants a new defensive coordinator.
Even assuming Rob Ryan is around for another year _ and that is no lock _ it’s a big leap to assume Kiffin would either be fired or quit because of it.
It’s still one of 32 jobs in the NFL. A 32-year-old coach that can deal with Davis and upgrade his team will only enhance his coaching skill, not to mention his resume. If Kiffin walked away, he’d instead appear naive and immature.
Even if what Kiffin eventually wants is a college job, bolting after a single season wouldn’t necessarily endear him to university presidents because he doesn’t have the track record as a head coach as Bobby Petrino did when he left the Atlanta Falcons for Arkansas.
Not only that, but it wouldn’t be fair to assistants he recruited such as Greg Knapp and Tom Cable who were initially reluctant to join the Raiders but were sold by Kiffin that things would be different.
Kiffin not only sold those coaches on the move, but their families as well.
You think Jon Gruden got everything he wanted? He knew how difficult it was to win in Oakland. In fact, Rich Gannon said Gruden’s recruiting pitch was, “Man, if we can turn around this place it will be our legacy.”
Kiffin gets a lot more out of sticking around and making things better than he does by quitting or getting himself fired after one year. He is the same coach who saw to it the following Winston Churchill quote was placed in every locker:
“A competitor will find a way to win. Competitors take bad breaks and drive themselves just that much harder. Quitters take bad breaks and use them as excuses to give up. It’s all a matter of pride.”

I want Kiffin to stay cause he wants to be a Raider. Not because he wants to upgrade over time.

Nice read.

January 7th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Kiffin aint going nowhere irregardless if RR stays or goes. he has one more yr to honor his contract and voiding it would be foolish if he wanted to pursue a career in the NFL. He will see this thru. Will he be here for yr 3 is the real question.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Thanks Jerry for the perspective!
Excellent work as usual.

Maybe there is going to be a compromise..Ryan stays but he runs a Tampa 2 defense.

Thanks, Jerry. You confirm much of what I have suspected about the dysfunctional state of this organization.

January 7th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
just fire Ryan already
January 7th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
This is from the Sporting News.
In the four opening-round games, the quarterbacks of the Redskins, Seahawks, Jags, Steelers, Giants, Bucs, Titans and Chargers combined for only 10 touchdown passes — and 13 interceptions.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
If Al drives this coach outta Oakland I’m done with this crap. Let him do his job and bring in his own staff. That’s not unreasonable. What’s unreasonable is to continue to expect us to support this franchise and purchase tix/merch when your own ego is more important than winning. Your way hasn’t worked for a long time. The only success you’ve had in 10+ years was when you let a young guy named Gruden do things his way. Did you not learn from your mistake when the man you let go whupped us in the Super Bowl? That team could never have beaten the Raiders if Gruden wasn’t coaching that team. Enough!!!!
January 7th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Where exactly did Kiffin say he wants Ryan gone? Nowhere that’s where. He said that he’ll evaluate everything and he said the D stunk. That’s it. The rest is just a bunch of grandmas sitting on the porch. After this gets settled the grandmas will blather on about something else. Same as it ever was, the gossip flows and those that are wrong, keep spouting about something new.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Al davis preaches a commitment to excellence but he can’t even commit to a coach. Mr. Davis says he is staying on until the Raiders win 2 more Super Bowls. In reality the Raiders will be lucky to win 2 more games if he keeps changing coaches.

They writing it for each other?
It’s all about pitch and sell to these guys. Entertainment, not wins and losses.
January 7th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
First!! I am the champion!! Let’s go LSU!!
January 7th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I’m convinced the “Ryan is staying” thing is just a smokescreen to get something for him if they can..
He’s under contract, so Davis wants some cash before he lets him out, right? Can teams still do that?
January 7th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
While this too (Jerry’s post) is also speculation, it’s at least speculation based upon what we’ve learned of the man (Kiffin) over the past year. What he’s preached and what he’s done. He preaches overcoming adversity, and I think we can conclude he’s a man of some integrity. If he wasn’t, I don’t think the players would have stayed with him all year.
January 7th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
let me rephrase that. Go Ohio State!

Time to let it go bro. With that sentence you imply 2 things. First you are implying that I said anything about said journalists, specifically by name. On the contrary I never mentioned anyone’s name and spoke mostly about philosophical interpretation. Secondly you imply that all Raider fans are stupid arsed. If thats true than you must be included in that grouping because whether you remember or not YOU ARE A RAIDER FAN TOO!
Like I said bro, let it go. Listen to some old Rudy Ray doing stand up or something…

Oh! now that Jerry comes up with a different opinion you all feel all better now. Everything has changed. Actually nothing has changed except Jerry’s attitude but that’s enough for all of you to get back on the bus.
There ae insane asylums more stable than the people in here. Nothing has changed because truth is nothing was wrong. But again all it takes is a pill from the media.
You OK now KoolKell

January 7th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
RoB stop talking to Al Davis as if he’s said anything bro. This has all been created by the media. When Mr. Davis says something then you can crucify him. Your basing your whole arguement on hearsay, how smart is that?
January 7th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
All -
I don’t mean to post such a lame and uneducated comment, but Al is an idiot already! I have been a die hard fan for 30 years! I am so losing patience. Living in Denver doesn’t help much - c’mon Al let Lane do his job and get outta the way!
January 7th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
I don’t know what all the crying is about Ryan. He might suck but most of the big plays we gave up this year were because of players more then anything Ryan had control over. So will it matter THAT much if he is still here? Kiffin has shown that he will address the players that aren’t making plays. Kiffin will make sure we draft play makers. Kiffin will straighten the D out if Ryan can’t. It’s not the end of the world.
January 7th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
What the Hell is really going on with our team???

I agree, that seems to be a major hurdle for many people these days and not just in sports journalism. Too many people believe everything that they read. I won’t re-hash my earlier posts because you obviously already know this stuff.

3 questions:
1. Do you think Ryan will stay?
2. Who do you think were targeting in the draft?
3. Do you think Big Al and Lane Kiffin are on the same page

14 years without a playoff victory, almost a decade and a half. That is a very long time. Damn.

for my takes, http://mvn.com/nfl-raiders/

Jerry thank you for saying what all of the other Raider beat writers should have said. To many times Raiders fans only see articles about their team that are designed to stir up controversy rather than just reporting the facts. it is one of the reasons why i respect you as a Raiders beat writer. You give the facts, even when they are unpleasant, and you do it as objectively as possible.
Thanks again,

Why would Kiffen go after this year?? This is the first time since Gruden that all the talk and the actual sense coming out of Alameda, players included, is the same…we’re gonna make sweeping changes and…*Gasp* rebuild instead of try to win it in one year….
Let’s stop with all the worthless, timewasting speculation about Kiffen for goodness sakes…
January 7th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Halftime: Boy did LSU blow that game open? That team is a juggarnaut.
Dorsey looks pretty damn solid at DT. Thats one helluva run stuffer. He’s not a pass rusher but if your looking to stop the run…is he worthy of #1? I don’t know cause its hard to pick a run stuffer #1 overall. I would think Long is more worthy since he’s both a run stuffer and pass blocker. Damn I hope we get Long but Dorsey will suffice.
Vernon looks good but not as good as Dorsey. James L. looks like a solid tackler and hitter but I would go elsewhere high in round 1. He’s more like a late 1st round to a 2nd round pick to me. I don’t think he’s coming out anyway.
January 7th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
wow, patrick actually said something this time, rather than just the normal ‘thanks for the update jerry’ and a link to his blog. keep it up buddy, if you want us to read your blog you need to pipe-up in here more often.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Whether we kick Ryan to the curb or not remains to be seen. Until then what we must do is upgrade our personnel. #1. Where was our most glaring weakness?
When your run D is 31st in the league that pretty much sums it up. We must go D-Line. We can either get Howie’s boy or we can trade down a few slots and pick Sedrick Ellis DT USC or C.Campbell DE The U. as well as an additional 2nd or a 3rd rdr. (remember we don’t have a 3rd rdr)Of course we need a SS to bring the pain like the legends of old i.e. Jack Tatum. I don’t see Haynesworth being a Raider for Tenn. would be foolish to allow him to leave. Of course on Offense we need a #1 WR either through the Draft or FA. A late rd pick of a RB to replace Fargas (It’s the System, gentlemen)to backup Rhodes and Bush would complement our backs and a 7th rd pickup of Jordan Lipsey C would give either Grove or Newberry the rest they will need. WE WILL COMMITT TO EXCELLENCE ONCE AGAIN!!!
January 7th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Dorsey packs on helluva punch too. I saw him side swipe this gaurd and almost knock him over. He’s SOLID prospect. Probably can’t go wrong there. Will he live up to the hype? I dont’ think so cause people expect too much. They expect #1 picks to be Superman and squeeze rings outta there asses. They’ll never understand that the guy just stop runs. Its not all glitz and glamour. So its hard to pick a run stuffer #1.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Dorsey looks strong as hell! Every time he gets low he wins and gets his shots in. Good lateral movement, quick feet, etc. We will not get a shot at him.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Keep the faith Raider Nation!!!
These things WILL happen:
-Kiffin will stay
-Ryan will be fired and replaced by Kiffin’s choice
-Big Al will have the final say on our 1st pick in the draft (Long)
-Kiffin will have the final say on our 2nd pick in the draft (some WR or OL)
-Schneider will get another chance on Special Teams
-The Raiders will finish between 7-9 & 9-7 in 2008
-The Raiders will rank at least #3 in rushing offense
-JaMarcus will finish with 3,128 yards, 19 TDs, 17 INTs, 58 PCT. passing.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Hey, I am a Raiders fan. I have been a Raiders fan for 37yrs since I first started watching football. I will die a Raiders fan. If Ryan stays then I will root for him. If he goes then I will root for the next DC. Hopefully we can upgrade the tallent, especially on the DL and at safety, and with better tallent and another year experience hopefully Ryan will be a better coach. I have seen a lot of coaches, as well as people in other walks of life who learn and get better with experience. Better tallent sure wouldn’t hurt any.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
If Ryan is with us next year I expect to see a big improvement in the defense. These guys have got to feel aweful for how they performed and will step up their games for the coach. You think a DC really needs to be teaching these guys how to tackle and fill gaps? I’m pretty sure their college bio’s said they were all good at fundamentals.
Like you said Raiderkoolaid, whoever it is has got our back!
January 7th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Add:
-We WILL sign a marquee Free Agent DT and/or SS. Also a journeyman CB.
-We WILL resign Namndi and Kelly. We will pass on resigning Fargas.
-Miller will have 63 catches for 608 yards and 7 TDs.
-Porter will get a big FA contract with the Bucs.
-Dominic Rhodes will be our opening day starter.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

Boy that was some serious bling he had too.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Good thing Jamarcus has toned down his look.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
“that’s an incredible representation of Alabama”! LOL!!!
Man, Jamarcus sure loves that ice! Oh, to be rich and young. That was funny.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Thanks Acey40deuce.
Man, you shut Twerp down. That was cool!
January 7th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
The problem with the Raiders is the entire TEAM was in such shambles that the Head Coach couldn’t concentrate on just one area. Kiff had to take control of the offense which, late in the season, began to show signs of life.
Now, maybe we can work on tackling, and turnover drills and Kiff can work with the defense some, really spend time, as head coach, with the defense.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
You think Troy was like “Man, that necklace is like, my whole contract!”
January 7th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
troy smith is pissed he is only 6 feet, thinks he’s a better qb than russell.

So many trolls so little time…
January 7th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
What was I telling you guys about that LSU interior line. The left side and interior of that LSU O line has been excellent against the number one run D in the nation.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
I am hoping that Kiffin sticks around too! He is doing a good job with the task at hand.
Jamarcus was bling, blinged out too.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Funny thing this game, it’s another game to show how the Big Ten players are overrated!!
Jake Long, another Robert Gallery?
What’s Gholston done so far in this game?
Laurinitis is doing alright, but not a Top 10 pick.
Dorsey on the other hand is showing why he’s the most dominant DT in college. I’m not saying he can’t pass rush because he’s getting double coverage every down. I’m very impressed with the way he’s moving the big OSU line.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
acey, damn I missed it. nice work tho.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Ohio State University number #1 D in college, but it was against a very weak non-conference schedule (University of Washington, Akron, & Youngstown State) including a weak Big Ten.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Dorsey has had a solid game. Early Doucet in the 2nd round???? what sayest thou?
January 7th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
For God’s sake, somebody make a tackle!
That was eerily familiar.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I’m bummed cuz I missed JaMarcus and his shiney bling
January 7th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Doucet in the 2nd would be awesome.
If Miami chooses to draft Long because of the 3-4 and St Louis drafts the other long, Dorsey could be available at 3.
Dorsey is the only player I would take over DMac and if he’s available I would sh*t my pants. He would help solve most of our D line woes.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
The Raiders are losers !

Is that Buckeyes or bugeyes?
January 7th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
lsu dt #90 is going to be a helluva player, he’s a sophmore.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
I also like that OSU reciever Robiskie, obviously of the Terry Robiskie lineage.
January 7th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Here they come, momentum swing!
I feel like I could still get it done baby! If I was in San Diego yesterday my Titans would have won that game! Ryan Leaf aka Phillip Rivers is a b!tch and LT is a crybaby.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I think Miami is the block.
St. Louis should go J Long, they took 3 DL last year and after what happened the the O line this year it just makes sense.
That leaves Dorsey, Long and ATL. I guess it’s possible but I seriously doubt we get Dorsey. But OH MAN would that make this offseason so much better!
January 7th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I have to admit I have a man crush on DMac, but I believe if Dorsey is around then we need to take him.
If we sign a FA DT like Corey Williams, then DMac would still be the choice.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
dorsey pancaked what r u watching
January 7th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Jeremy you better stay away from Dakota’s man!
January 7th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
The guys from DethKlok are big Raider fans
January 7th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Why not do both Jeremy? Everybody wants to stop the run. So, bring in Dorsey(long shot) AND Williams. Think of Minnesota.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
i wonder if highsmith could be converted into a ss?
January 7th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
How about LSU D’Coordinator? Thats one agressive S.O.B. He doesn’t have pass rushers like Vernon and he’s still bringin’ the heat. How about that for a change? On 4th and 7 he brings the heat, with man-to-man coverage may I add, instead of playing prevent D.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Considering we have Tommy Kelly, Gerard Warren, & Terdell Sands who can fight for one position opposite of either Corey Williams/Dorsey, there would be no reason to take them both.
However if Kelly departs, then it would be nice to have two solid DT’s plus a enigma in Warren.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
hey twerp gallery sucks is a bust etc who cant see that…the thing is he was the highest rated player period, of need, any team woulda picked em, The raiders happened to suck enough to be “lucky” to get him. As far as huff…I was impressed at the time, looked like they were gonna start rebuilding, leinert was the glamour pick, was nice to pass it up.
All raider fans know 9 loses mean nothing look at the all time series? and besides only one champ every year, and loads of chups, so act like your at least 5 yrs old. And dont worry over time all thing that go up in the nfl also go down, lets see who the true fans are at the bottom, can you say that for yourself?
January 7th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
hang on sloopy
January 7th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Wow Snake. I think your delay bomb was a little too late!
Way to stick it to ‘em though!
January 7th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
I was being a smart ass there Jeremy. Sorry. We’ve got plenty of needs to spread the wealth, that’s for sure.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Bs I was thinking the same thing, I just dont know how well he would do in coverage. He has the speed and athleticism though
January 7th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
The LSU D coordinator took over the Nebraska Head Coach job vacated by Bill Callahan. Looks like Callahan screws us again.
Highsmith goes about 235 so he would be a little big for SS. The guy for SS might be Colorado LB Jordan Dizon. 220 lbs and that guy is a tackling machine!!
January 7th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
he plays aggressive and with an attitude, something we desperately need.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
unless he’s gained weight i see him listed at 6-1 223.

Would’nt surprise me at all if Kiffin brings some coaches up from the college ranks. He knows those dudes, game planned against some of them, etc.
Perhaps a D line or LB’s coach to kill ‘em in the offseason.
I’m telling you, those guys may like Ryan and all but they are gonna HATE Kiffin during camp!!
January 7th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
..and that’s your ballgame folks
January 7th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
That’s why I keep mentioning Ed Orgeron as either D coordinator or part of the staff.
I guy of his coaching caliber and he’s still unemployed? In my opinon I think there’s a possibility here due to their USC connection. He would be like Cable to our D line, Mr McNasty.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
You kiddin me Oakglenn…damn you Callahan!

January 7th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
JR better be careful or he is going to get jacked after the game for all that bling.
Draft McFadden.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
It’s funny how some of the bloggers here right after reading the piece by Jerry automatically assume and take everything he says as gospel. It must be true if it’s in the newspaper or in this case written by a sportswriter.
I admire the Raiders for not coming out and participating in the constant rumorville that the media would love them to. The media thinks that they deserve to be updated at every move and most times before the move is even decided on. Plain and simple they don’t. In the end the team and every team in the NFL owes something to their fans, but that something is not to detail every future and present move so the so called experts can rip them or praise them. What they do owe their fans is to put a winning team on the field, which they have failed to do. It must be very frustrating to cover a team that is so uncooperative with the press, but I think it also brings out the best in the writers.
I think Kiffin stays and RR is on thin ice, and if a suitable replacement is available he is gone. I think Al is actually a supporter of RR but he certainly didn’t like some of his recent comments about “I’d have a job in 2 mins”. Not if Al holds onto you until the last minute. RR is probably Al’s boy because he loves man coverage–not that that got us anywhere. RR is Lane’s only nonhire. I think Lane wants to find his own guy, and finish his imprints on a team that will soon have more players chosen by LK.

Dakota -
Please stop stalking me. This is getting creepy. How did you know I was here, I haven’t even posted tonight!
January 7th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
I think we might need to send Jim Brown over to Jamarcus’s house for little sit down. A little, “This is what a man is, not this” type of speech.
You’re right Dakota. The guy’s walking around with $100K worth of stones.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
6th sense.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
I see draftable people
January 7th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Hey Darren,
Was hoping you could get a shout out to Arthur Blank about this years draft. You see, he REALLY likes running QB’s and you fit the bill perfectly.
Thanks
January 7th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Damn LSU should have played USC. That would have been a Championship game.
Early Doucett is a nice player, and I would love to see him fall to the Raiders at the top of the 2nd round.
Glenn Dorsey was the most dominating force on the field tonight. that guy is going to be a perennial pro bowler/ all pro in the NFL. I see why everyone has him going no. 1. I hope he is on the board when the Raiders are up.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
See how another guy gets the award Dorsey could’ve had?
Dorsey is a freakin beast. I haven’t been excited for a DT since Haynesworth came out.
Hope we can get him fellas as our D would be upgraded instantly.
If we decided to also sign Corey Williams, we could have an awesome D line which would immediately translate into an awesome D as our LB’s would be free to swarm.
If no Dorsey, then please DMac because he could do amazing things for our offense.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Jeremy I agree with you about Ed Oregon. I just read that book Meat market and the dude knows how to coach up a d line.
I like the idea somebody floated about Ali Highsmith as SS, but he will be a first round draft pick without a doubt. He also could be a hell of a weak side LB in the cover 2 scheme.
Jordan Dizon is probably more realistic.
I like that SS from Illinios: Harrison. I think he was no. 32. I saw him get a pick against Booty and lay out fred davis. that man seems to love to hit.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Had USC played LSU it would’ve been a battle. It would’ve been interesting to see Joe McKnight back home.
I’m curious to see what players from USC start getting added to our roster. In 2005 Kiffin became recruiting coordinator and this would be the first year juniors from that recruiting class can be drafted.
Kiffin has so much knowledge of all these players that other coaches don’t have. He knows a lot about these player’s character and work ethic because he recruited or looked at every top talent in high school.
For the next three years he should know about most of the players coming out and as long as he stays here for another 3 years, this is a big advantage for us.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Not that it matters anymore. But when it’s slow the media often times will use their good guy bad guy routine. One guy will stir the crap and another writer will take the opposite approach. That’s what I believe took place.
they mostly do it with big stories or after games to make sure there’s balance or a slant for everyone. Just thought I’d add that to the mix.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
If Ryan stays I’m not going to be happy, but if he replaces Millard, Don Johnson, & Martindale and hires caches who preach fundamentals and execution like Ogeron, then I would be willing to see another year.
Obviously at the Senior Bowl both Ryan & Kiffin will probably either find replacements, or Kiffin will find his new DC.
Either way, really good coaches should be able to coach up our D line and have our D making tackles and executing every play. Not every other play.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
hires coaches
January 7th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
I’m watching the Mystery of the Human Hobbit on the Discovery channel. How is this a mystery? Hobbits exist, have they not seen footage of Bill Callahan on the sidelines?
January 7th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
I just saw the UFA list and I was suprised to see that Andre Davis WR from the Texans was on there. I have been looking for Bernad Berrian, but Davis may be the sleeper on the Board for better value. He had a few nice catches and I saw him get deep a few times this year including a TD against the Raiders.
DJ Hackett is also an intriguing prospect because he seems to get open and get decent seperation. on top of that he comes from a West coast offense. I think he would also shore up the receiving crops. If I am Lane Kiffen I snatch up both of those guys so I could concentrate on other needs in the draft. between Curry, Higgins, Davis and Hackett the Raiders would have a much improved WR corps that could help develop Jamarcus nicely. Berrian is still the best guy available to me, but a lot of teams will be after him because the UFA list is so thin with proven prospects.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Laurinaitis might be a great player but LSU used a spread offense and essentialy took him out of the game so he couldn’t impact the game. You have to look at a different game if you want to seeif he really can play.
Dorsey didn’t play as well as he can. I’m hoping that Robiskie comes out at WR. Just based on his dad, his dad played for the Raiders and was one very hard nosed dude. His son looks like his future is ahead of him, he’s a player. Vernon Gholston is a quality DE if we go DT early I wouldn’t mind seeing him in camp.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Another dull national championship involving OSU. I hope the powers that be realize Big 10 teams can’t hang with the athletic SEC/PAC-10 teams and keep them out of the title game next year, no matter what their overall records are.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
this could be a good thing, remember, mike ditka and buddy ryan didn’t like each other at all, and yet they made one of the best defenses the world has ever seen. now if only somehow lane kiffin and rob ryan (buddy’s son, wink wink) could not each other more……..
January 7th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
I know a lot of people will reply regarding the raiders and their coaching issues. But this is as good and article I’ve seen written on this blog….Keep it comming
January 7th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
I like having a QB with some style and personality…
January 7th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
raidyourshit, comment #131
i like where you are going, if somehow we can get just a few people to replace some of our guys (Stuart, Fabian, and Terrell sands mainly, sapp also cuz he is retiring), then this could be another 85′ bears team, if not i hope they get close to it
January 7th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
then again…..we could replace rob with rex ryan…..
January 7th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
East Coast Raider,
You mock people taking the media’s word as gospel. What about fans taking this as gospel?
“I don’t meddle”.
As you would say; It must be true if Al Davis mutters it out of his crusty mouth.
Oh, and in case you haven’t noticed, the Raiders did in fact “come out” and “participate” with the rumor game. If it was nothing, they would have given no statement. No organization or company just makes a statement to refute a report unless it’s to save face or manipulate it. If it’s unsubstantiated, it’s on the reporter. Don’t be so foolish as to think the Raiders didn’t release a statement with some kind of agenda.
Your assessment of Davis holding on to Ryan for his “2 minutes” statement is just creepy, and has shades of Marcus Allen. But I’m glad you brought it up, because it demonstrates yet again that Al Davis takes personal grudges more seriously than winning. If all Al cared about was winning, he would have just cut ties with Ryan and let Kiffin choose his DC. Heck, he never would have hired Ryan to begin with. He never would have hired Norv to begin with. Oh, the list goes on. Davis could give a s’t about winning, and you know it. It’s all personal ego with him, anymore. And that’s why Rob Ryan is still with this team, following 4 straight years of not being able to stop the run.
January 7th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
More re: your guys’ making fun of Bill Callahan:
Trivia:
What genius, what x’s and o’s guru, what master of defensive strategy, what owner that wants to win more badly than any other owner in the game, introduced Bill Callahan to the world of football head coaching?
January 7th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Bs, your an a-hole, i bet u ain’t even a raider fan, bULLsHIT is wut Bs stands for
January 7th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Bill Callahan is an Al Davis export. It’s flat hilarious to see Davis nut swingers making fun of him.
January 7th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
raiders/wariors/athletics Says:
January 7th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
have faith on your owner!!!!!??????……..
hopefully he will completly die soon =)
you’re a sorry a5s piece of sh!t, dumb fck mother fcker. ya, you’re an a-hole you cork suckin mofo.
January 7th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
beach,
what did you do with raider dell?
the cops are on to you bro.
January 7th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
i cant wait for AD to have to give it up. i bet $ that it will come down to a league vote to get him out. it’ll be ugly and embarassing.
January 7th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Stretch,
I aint to break this to you but AL isnt going anywhere till his # is called. The league has no reason to boot him unless he breaks some kinda law such as I dunno…riverboat gambling.
You might as well just want to find a new team if thats your wish. If you dont like AL why are you a Raider fan? Al is the Raiders so embrace it or go get some red & gold gear!

January 7th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
aint = hate
soory
January 7th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
ouch. f red n gold and you for saying that. im saying that hes not going to go away all the sudden. hes going to fight it all the way out. it wont be pretty
January 7th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
MaddenRaider,
All I was saying is that Al runs his team as he sees fit and doesn’t really give a crap.
To me, if I was an owner and my DC was talking about how he would be out of a job for two mins, I would be a little pissed too. I mean I would call him into my office for a chat about why he thought he would be hired so quick? Maybe he might discover some tampering going on. Because really after a 4-12 season in which the D looked god awful with some real talent on the team it seems odd that you are so positive you would be unemployed for such a short time. I am assuming he is banking on his last name and last season in which no team needed to score on the Raiders because they doubted they could cross the 50.
January 7th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
i know AD is the raiders but enough is enough. hes holding this up for too long now. the game has past him by. he may still know talent but he dont know modern day coaching
January 7th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
here’s what i’d like to see in the 2008 draft…
raiders trade down a couple spots and pick up a 3rd rd draft pick…
rd1 - mlb rey maualuga (i know he says he’s not declaring, i think he will)
rd2 - dt frank okam (or other run stuffing dt, like bryant)
rd3 - lt (barry richardson, john greco, tony hills, or other lt) -or- wr (keenan burton, dj hall, will franklin, or other wr)
*i’m expecting the raiders to sign a lt or wr in free agency.
rd4 - ss caleb campbell (or other physical ss, like barrett, probably already gone though)
January 7th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Stretch, Maybe because he doesn’t coach, Kiffin does.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
It has been said that the truest measure of a society is in how it cares of and educates its youth, and how it takes care of its elderly. Kicking someone to the curb because they are pushing 80 years of age is not particularly dignified.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
rd3 - wr davone bees, it’ll be interesting how these guys do at the combine/pro days.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
M,
Don’t blame them, they don’t know any better. Not much home training, ya’ know.
January 8th, 2008 at 12:45 am
LSU has won the National Championship in 2003 & 2007. Jamarcus Russell was not the starter for either of those. He was the starting QB in between 2 Championship games. Makes you wonder if the team was talented enough to win more during that span. I hope its not a bad sign on JR’s part.
I’m not saying its JR’s fault because I couldn’t prove that but you have to be curious about the idea.
2003 - LSU wins National Championship - JR is a Redshirt Freshman.
2004 - JR plays in 11 games and starts 4 games as a true freshman. JR was valiant in a comeback during the Capital One Bowl but lost in the end to a last minute Touchdown.
2005 - JR started and led the team to a 10-1 record. Russell injured his shoulder in a loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, and missed the team’s bowl game. Backup quarterback Matt Flynn replaced Russell for the Peach Bowl against Miami, and the Tigers won the game 40-3.
2006 - JR started and led the team to a 10-2 record. JR led the Tigers to a 41-14 win over Notre Dame. He was also named the Sugar Bowl’s MVP.
2007 - JR was drafted #1 overall by the Raiders. LSU wins another National Championship.
JR’s biggest accomplishment in big games was beating an overrated Notre Dame team in the Sugar Bowl. This is why he needed to sit for a year and learn.
January 8th, 2008 at 1:04 am
Its a team game Huff I wouldn’t draw any conclusions on JR
January 8th, 2008 at 1:10 am
Huff,
Just remember his incredible upside JaMarcus posseses:
-Monster arm yet to be unleashed
-Has touch on short & mid-range throws
-Throws very well on the run
-Very accurate
-Natural leadership qualities
-Tough to take down & will be good for QB sneaks.
-Had the most prolific ProDay ever before being drafted.
January 8th, 2008 at 2:31 am
Huffy, I wouldn’t worry about JR. We just need to find successors to Sims and Newberry who can improve our pass protection and at least two genuinely threatening WRs.
Max Starks or Tavelle Wharton would be great FA upgrades on Sims. There are some interesting late round prospects at Center (Steve Justice - Wake, Nick Allota - Colorado, Adam Hill - Monroe).
Bernard Berrian in FA and Early Doucet at the start of the 2nd would do nicely.
I am assuming that our draft priorities will be something like:
Round 1: DE - Chris Long WVA
Round 2: WR - Early Doucet LSU
Round 4: ILB - Ben Moffitt South Florida
Round 6: S - Quintin Demps UTEP
Round 7: C - Nick Allota Colorado State
The alternative, especially if Chris Long has gone and assuming that we aren’t going to indulge in McFadden would be:
Round 1: MLB - James Laurinaitis Ohio
Round 2: WR - Early Doucet LSU
Round 4: DT - Dre Moore Maryland
Round 6: S - Quintin Demps UTEP
Round 7: C - Nick Allota Colorado State
There looks to be a lot of depth to this draft. We desperately need more picks and that makes it imperative that we get 4th rounders or better for Andrew Walter, Lamont Jordan, etc.
January 8th, 2008 at 3:22 am
Callahan could join Tampa’s offensive staff (Yahoo! Sports)
Too funny!!!
January 8th, 2008 at 3:38 am
I like the way that Jerry uses Churchill in his headline to point out and poke fun at the absurdity of the previous reports about Ryan and the Kiffin situation, where no real sources where quoted.
Jerry your sense of irony has not been lost on me
January 8th, 2008 at 3:40 am
If/when Ryan goes, Kiff may want to go after Mike Zimmer, the Atlanta Falcons DC. He is apparantly free to leave and has already been interviewed by the Bengals.
We have a good record with escapees from Atlanta and Zimmer is well regarded.
Another experienced option would be Carolina secondary coach Tim Lewis, ex-Giants and Steelers coordinator.
If Kiff wants to replace the Hairy Fairy with an experienced DC, he better move quick - before the best ones are snapped-up.
January 8th, 2008 at 3:44 am
Copenhagen, yes it is absurd but it is also completely avoidable. Why does this franchise have to speak in riddles all the time? Why can’t we just issue clear definite and consistent statements?
This is a pro-football franchise, not a High School Debating Society.
All our wounds are self-inflicted. We are our own worst enemies. A commitment to dysfunctionality.
January 8th, 2008 at 3:49 am
every other board i is, in every other blog i do, i see the same hoooeeeezzz.
get of Als (and JayMacs) nutts already. were rolling in the right direction finally, so just sit back relax and let them work this out and see what happens gd……
M, nice post dude. thats really what its all about since we are only able to inherit our parents noses hair or skin colour, but not their knowlege or experiences in life. we dont respect the knowlege and experiences of elders no more and look where we at. good post.
January 8th, 2008 at 3:57 am
Brian Baldinger tells Tony Bruno that Darren McFadden is nowhere near ready for the NFL.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:01 am
Scottish…we do know that the communication coming out of the Raiders is “Murky” to say the least. Another case is how the communication with the players and coaches is internally.
I believe that Kiff has bought into the nebulous approach in concert with Al Davis.
1) Kiff never made it clear who his QB was all season.
2) Kiff never dispelled claims that he was on his way out.
3) Kiff never said that Ryan was in or out.
It’s not all AL……Kiff is also playing the game! Let’s hope they talk to the PLAYERS so they’re still IN.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:02 am
Do you think Howie wants his son playing for Al? Do you think his son wants to play for the Raiders or make a name for himself elsewhere? Just wondering if anyone has info.
Callahan is a good assistant coach, lots of experience our offensive line was good under him and so was our offense when he was a coordinator. His problem is his ego, but that is most peoples fault anyway
January 8th, 2008 at 4:06 am
bresnahan is available. Just kidding.
do you remember when he was a hot commodity and there were teams trying to get him from the Raiders? Al would have none of it. It seems when someone wants something Al possesses, that is what he gets off on. Now with Ryan.
I don’t blame Kiff if he wants another DC, every coach should have the opportunity to bring in who they see fit
January 8th, 2008 at 4:11 am
Copenhagen, I hope you’re right.
It is very true that Kiff has not publicly called for Ryan to go. So there is some PR ‘wriggle-room’, if Ryan is indeed retained. However, I am sure that Kiff will look to extract some benefits in return for his silence.
If I was Kiff, I would say to Al Davis: “Okay, you can keep Ryan and I will not undermine that decision. In return for my co-operation I wants some changes to the defensive coaching staff, some amendments to the defensive playbook and the final word on draft picks. Deal?”
January 8th, 2008 at 5:00 am
The way this reads it’s like Al is the problem. Now, understanding that Jerry would not be the only one to think that but it’s Al’s team; you don’t like it, don’t coach there and don’t be a fan; hell, bring Art Shell back.
I like Lane and want him to stay but this mantra, this diatribe about how bad it is at Oakland sounds to me we are putting round pegs into square holes.
Maybe it’s time to revise the ‘vision statement’ from “Commitment to Excellence” to “Just survive in order to get a better job elsewhere.”
Being a Raider and Raider fan is a way of life, it’s not a stupid, jump off sides in an undisciplined way but a tough, smart and talented bunch who may not have perfect lives but play as a team and come through more times than not in the end.
January 8th, 2008 at 5:30 am
commitment to excellence was a slogan coined by Al, not one of his coaches. Yeah it’s Al’s team but that doesn’t mean we can’t voice our opinions. He can run this team into the ground, oh wait he already has, the worst team of the last five years and gee how many head coaches. This man is the maverick alright, the maverick of instability. Whacky things always happen to the Raiders and some of us fans are sick of it. I am a Raider fan, I just don’t want it to be lip sync. Back up that talk Al or get out, maybe he is just in it for the money. The Raiders fans made him very rich.
January 8th, 2008 at 5:43 am
Until you actually know what’s going, why speculate and get upset?
Every year it’s another rumor. It doesn’t matter who are coach is, every rumor on the block will stipulate one thing or another about Al, the head coach, and whatever coordinator is lacking skilss (ie Walsh in ‘94 & Ryan ‘07).
Until it’s fact, why get upset and worry? Too many times I’ve gotten upset only to find out it was all media
The media could be right, but on the other hand they could easily & have been wrong several times.
January 8th, 2008 at 6:12 am
Did Craig Steltz (LSU’s All-American Safety) remind anyone else of Schweigert last night? Maybe Denver needs a safety… Laurenitis is an Urlacher waiting to happen; everywhere at once. Maybe not as fast, but definitely a nose for the ball. The guy that really surprised me was Gholston; does that guy come off the ball or what? I still hope we get a shot at Dorsey, but if Ryan stays and gets to run the 3-4 Long is our guy…
Regarding the Ryan (scenario, debacle, goatf…, pick your descriptor), maybe we have something a little complicated going on here. Al most likely wants compensation from the Jets, and Tampa would probably want compensation for Morris. Takes awhile to work something like that out, doesn’t it? Of course, Ryan could be staying and we’re waiting for something that’s already happened. I’m on the side of waiting ’til we hear from dear old Al, but it doesn’t stop my mind from working on what might be happening… sorry, can’t help it.
January 8th, 2008 at 6:55 am
BHP - I actually thought Dorsey was stellar last night. I was paying great attention to him on almost every defensive series. The vast majority of runs that came his direction, he was right there and stopped them with little or no gain. Even runs that didn’t come his direction he was there to stop - albiet to a lesser extent of course. Now if you say he can play even better, then this guys is golden. I don’t see him as being much of a pass rusher though. More of a run stuffer which we need as well as Miami.
James L though, I think he looked like a solid tackler and hitter (but I didn’t like his picking up players after hitting them). He even met & stopped LSUs RB up top on a goal line stand which was very impressive even though the guy sorta fell in. Now I don’t think he’s worth a top 5 pick though. To me he’s more like a mid to bottom half 1st rounder. A solid prospect though.
Vernon looked like a quality DE I agree. He’s basically the same size as Burgess but I’ll rather stick with Burgess. Burgess seems a bit faster than him. Contrary to popular belief Vernon was applying good pressure to the QB.
January 8th, 2008 at 7:14 am
Oh yeah …for the record. I keep repeating that I heard James L. is not coming out this year. He even said he’s going to try to get all the defenders back next year that could come out this year. That would include Vernon G.
And Dre Moore will not fall to the 4th. You’ll be extremely lucky if he falls to the 3rd.
January 8th, 2008 at 7:15 am
My mind wanders too on the possible scenarios and speculation, but I am not upset by any means.
Being a Raiders fan comes with the territory. You know with Al there’s always going to be rumors and it’s a love/hate world. Either you love us or you hate us.
I’ve always been IN and regardless of what happens will stay IN.
January 8th, 2008 at 7:18 am
Native,
Curious..why did Brian Baldinger say McFadden’s not ready for the NFL? I can guess but I wanna know why he actually said.
January 8th, 2008 at 7:33 am
Novice fans want Mr Davis to clarify his stand on the Dcoach. The media second guesses his every move just to shake up the franchise(they think) & their fans (which worked). Nubies want consistancy in our coaching & demand a press conf. EVERYONE else who’s been a Raider fan and know Al & his actions sit back and watch. We could see it during Ryan’s press conf. that he cut his own throat with Al. Mr “I can get a job in 2 mins.” Incredible move Rob, now Al can jerk you around and sit on you so no team can touch you until MISTER Davis says so. Patrick’s article says all I need to know about the Raiders hiring a new Dcoach, scout one out before you fire the old. He’s brilliantly sitting on Ryan & making the Jets sweat it out. Kiffen will get his man when he interviews several people (probably at the combine) & make a selection both he & Al can live with, meanwhile the Jets or any team that wants him will have to wait for Al. Good move as far as I see, especially since Ryan treated Al like an ass at his press conf. The funniest part is the trolls think Kiffen is leaving & Adam Schitfer(brains) announces on the NFL channel that Kiffen’s spot isn’t secure….hahahahaha
January 8th, 2008 at 8:27 am
I really hoping to get a 2nd look at the Saftey from LSU Steltz. He got hurt in the game. What a downer. Dorsey looked good though - he can really flow to the action and appears to have really good field vision.
How bout Craig Ironhead Haywards son a Freshman. We may have to keep an eye on him.
January 8th, 2008 at 8:28 am
IDK Jerry keep protecting his colleagues and so called source. I think he’s making Al mad with the PR release.
January 8th, 2008 at 8:29 am
Al Davis is a malignancy that needs to be removed before it kills an NFL franchise. Do us all a favor Mr. Davis; step down or allow someone else to run the franchise.
January 8th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Good call RaiderTW

January 8th, 2008 at 9:30 am
I have no love for mcfadden.
here are some guys that can do just as well.
don’t laugh
Stewart fast and lean
Hart plays in the zone system already
Rice expeienced will break dayne’s rushing record if he stays in school
i dont think mc f@gg0n is any better than a guys.
Vote no to mc f@gg0n!
January 8th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Man, just finished reading Tim Kawakami’s article.
These guys are true A holes. It’s all a bunch of media heads starting rumors and then having each other “confirm” them TO EACH OTHER!
Talk about an easy job!
Al and The Raiders Rule!!
Don’t believe a damn thing you hear fellas unless there are actual quotes from the parties involved.
January 8th, 2008 at 9:45 am
Gibbs retired! Could Saban take that job!
January 8th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Two things.
First is I don’t think Ryan is problem with defense. It’s personnel. Sapp was not good at run and Sands was inconsistent with G. Warren being better, but still not consistent. Kelly was hurt. There were times were we would dominate in run D, so what Ryan was teaching can work and work well as we are excellent most of the time against the pass as well. Tampa 2 is softer and teams can just use ball control to beat it. We need better line and at least 1 safety to really make Ryan’s system run well. His preferred system is not what he is running though. He prefers 3-4, but Sapp was not a good fit.
From what I understood Gruden’s leaving was as much to do with wanting to be with family who reside in Florida as anything else. I think alot of the other stuff is simply news tabloid fodder.

I wouldn’t put it past the EVIL EMPIRE (aka the NE Patsies) from trading up with Miami or Atlanta to get Chris Long or Dorsey. They are notorious for draft day action. Both Miami and Atlanta need QB’s and I dont see any worthy of that high of a pick.

Saint,
yeah I just read the Kawakami article…do some of these guys have no other purpose in life than to produce mean-spirited, speculative garbage in order to promote themselves and stir up trouble? They seem to take glee in making someone or other pissed off at someone else, like some highschool girl. It’s kind of sad really, that that is their life’s contribution to the world. Kudos to Jerry for keeping things as objective as possible and even-keeled. Scottish I like your draft scenarios in #156. Let’s hope we can get some picks for Walter etc. to fatten things up…a round 3 slot is seriously needed.

I see the Jehovah Witness’s are still in here in denial of christmas. (lol)

The Media knows that Kiffin is GOOD for our franchise, and that we will NOT be bottom dwellers much longer. The media also knows that Ryan is BAD for us. Everyone is trying to get their licks in on us while they still can. I hate Raidershaters, but we wouldn’t be DA RAIDAHS without them. People love F’ing with Big Al, but come press conference time, they love kissing his wrinkly AASS all over!

Raul,
Put the koolaid down and mix in a glass of water every now and then.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Hey FIRE KIFFIN,
Why don’t you make yourself useful these days and become FIRE RYAN for awhile???
I’m sure we would adore you, laugh, and concur with all your dumb comments for once…
Wouldn’t that feel nice for a change??
January 8th, 2008 at 10:41 am
According to Pat Kirwan on Sirius radio today and yesterday, Kiffin has a 3 year deal with options to go to 5. He does talk directly to Kiffin and I don’t see any way he could be wrong. So, will somebody please either fire everyone that reported Kiffin only has a 2 year contract (or fire Kirwan if he’s actually wrong). JM reported on the reporting of having a 2 year deal so he keeps his job this time. Man, I wish I had a job where I could just make up stuff.
Kirwan has some other generic comments that are obvious to anybody that doesn’t take the troll bait and finished up with the comment that Kiffin is the right guy for the job. Giving Kirwan and Ryan’s football knowledge and the accuracy of their info in the past, I’m excited for the future with Kiffin, JR, ZM, OO and whoever we end up drafting.
By the way, if you have Sirius radio, Kirwan and Ryan have, by far, the best show on NFL Radio. They do The Red Zone on Monday/Friday (Ryan is back on Fridays now since he was broadcasting regular games) and Movin’ The Chains on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. Their Tuesdays are great when the interview Kiffin/Edwards/Tomlin/Dungy and a ton of players. I missed everything but the end of the show today (out of my control) so I don’t know if they had their regular conversation with Kiffin or not. If they did and anybody knows what was said, post it up.
They will be at the Senior Bowl and I expect lots of skinny on Kiffin during that week.

KK,
Koolaid??? Oh yeah, I forgot…your a brotha. Try being more like 1960AutumnWind…he’s how an ‘Old Skool’ Raiders fan SHOULD represent himself. You just come off like Art Shell’s illegitimate son…

Raul, and you other Witness’s
If you pulled your thumb out of your ass, you might be a little more motivated.

This is the last straw for DAVIS with me@@@@@ I’ve been a loyal fan since 1976 and I can’t do it anymore…..there is no more method behind Davis’ madness….It’s just a case of a bitter old man paying for his sins and the fans and players are the true victims
January 8th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Where does Kawakami get the idea that JaMarcus isn’t Kiffin’s type of QB? And don’t give me that “he loves McCown” crap, either.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:59 am
JohnS, that entire article is speculation. He has no knowledge of any of that. I thought about emailing him but changed my mind…screw it.
I bet the Kawakami isnt even allowed in the building.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:01 am
The Preponderance of evidence that’s all that’s necessary in a civil suit.
Jerry MacDonald, Monte Poole, Carl Steward, are not out to screw the Raiders, ok? I just can believe the Oakland Tribune, which I’ve read all my life, is out to F the Raiders. C’mon People.

Ive been having second thought on the dismissal of Ryan. Lets says we upgrade the DLine and get a Safety, both of which he has never had. Is it worth saying that he is a good DC with not the best personnel.
Lets not forget the Raiders was 1st in Pass Defense last year…even though the numbers may be skewed.
I love the guys fire and obviously the players do too.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:11 am
The Point Being, Davis-Kiffin, Not On Same Page.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Tay:
The thing about Ryan is he never bashes his defense in public and I think the players respect that. They play for him!
January 8th, 2008 at 11:19 am
[4 Wins] * (Davis Kiffin) = Infinite Instability.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Attention Al Davis bashers:
You just have to think like Al (and hope your head doesn’t hurt because he has a lot to juggle up there), Ryan holds a press conf. saying I’ll have a job in 2 mins. about 3-4 times. That pisses Al off so he says fine, we have a contract I’ll have to pay if I fire you so you & the Jets will just have to wait until they buy out your contract or Lane & I agree on a replacement. Hell, Al can wait until Aug before he fires him if he wants, f^ck what the press says. Lane now has all the time he needs to talk to defensive coaches. The draft is probably a bigger concern than Ryan for them. Think like Al, revenge is sweeter and maybe he won’t have to pay Ryan to look for a job. That would give him thousands of $$ for that 2 mins.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:21 am
I cant stand Tim Kawakami the guy is so full of B.S. He should be a tabloid writer. He only writes about negative drama and most of it is completely made up.
Nothing in his article was based on any fact whatsoever.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:23 am
KK,
AL shuns the media and this is nothing new hes been doing it for decades. The local media gets nothing from Mr Davis so they write krap that is purely speculation or something THEY want to happen.
Do you think Kawakami has first hand knowledge or a “inside source” of anything he reported?
KK, how do you know Kiffin/Al are not on the same page? For all you know they are watching all this and having a good laugh.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:25 am
808,
DO the players play for Ryan?? It didn’t look like it to me.
KK,
Thanks for the link to the Kawakami story. Tim’s probably still pissed that Big Al called him Korean at that press conference a while back. What’s up with the 816 better candidates reference? If you read his story like a blog, he doesn’t sound any different than a typical Raider Hater. These guys have NOTHING to write about!!! They’re just stirring the pot (& smoking it too)!!!
I can’t believe some of you ‘die-hard Raider fans’ are actually biting on this crap!!! If you’re truly IN, then STAY IN, and don’t believe the OUTSIDERS!!!
January 8th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I believe the last time Kawakami actually talked to Al Davis, tape recorder at hand, it ended up like this:
Al: ”you don´t know what the hell you´re talking about…shut that thing off”.
Apparently, Tim still doesn´t.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:34 am
RaiderTW,
Very nice post. You are 100pct right about Big Al’s mindset…
Hey, he’s done it to players for years who have asked to leave: Marcus, Steve Buerline, Charles Woodson, Chester…
Big Al is in NO hurry to fire Ryan because: A) He & Kiffin are still evaluating candidates, and B) Al will need to pay out his contract, so he SHOULD try to get something for it if he can.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Typical Cultist response Raul. How
