Lofton to interview Monday

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, January 25th, 2008 at 3:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.

James Lofton will interview with the Raiders for the third time in three years Monday.

According to senior executive John Herrera, Lofton will interview as a position coach with head coach Lane Kiffin.

The same Kiffin who reportedly is locked in a “fire/resign” battle of wills with owner Al Davis.

Herrera insists the Kiffin-Davis feud isn’t the juicy story ESPN’s Chris Mortensen made it out to be.

“It’s not an issue. Lane’s the coach. It’s not an issue,” Herrera said. “I think the one accurate thing he said is that James Lofton will be interviewed. He will be _ as a position coach _ and he will do it with Lane on Monday because that’s when he gets back from Mobile and the Senior Bowl.”

Herrera also refuted the notion that Kiffin has been stripped of all personnel authority and control of his staff, conceding only that Davis was “irritated” when rumors of Kiffin’s interest in Arkansas surfaced four games before the end of the season.

“But that’s ancient history and this is now,” Herrera said. “There has never been any question about Lane being the coach. It hasn’t been an issue.”

Herrera also said Dennis Green has not been contacted by the club, noting that Green already said he hasn’t been contacted and that his name is always connected to the Raiders.

Lofton was fired this week as wide receivers coach of the San Diego Chargers. He interviewed for the head coaching positons that went to Art Shell and Norv Turner.

Kiffin has done nothing to refute the reports, saying, “I’m not going to comment on anything that’s transpired in the last three weeks.”

That three-week time frame coincides with the Raiders issuing a release saying Rob Ryan was still the defensive coordinator.

I hate to say Nation, I told ya so, but, I told ya so about Ryan too.

And Dogg, you’re right about Holmgren. Complete control.

  5. Vicky Says:

This is becoming a total joke. The only thing more interesting than the RAiders season is the Raiders offseason. I hope this nonsense is set straight by Monday with kiffin as HC and Lofton as WR coach.

  6. K-Rock Says:

    Too much smoke…

I amfraid there is a really big fire.

  7. Dakota Says:

The only thing worse that Davis firing Kiffin would be making Kiffin coach next year against his will. Lame Duck Kiffin would have no control over the players.

  8. Nickatina Says:

hey its all good, they are just going to hire James Lofton as the wide recievers coach under Kiffin. If Kiffin were really in a battle with Al Davis over firing/resigning he would have commented to the media to really piss Al Davis off, instead he continued to take the company stance of silence. Sounds like Scheffer just heard about a raider interview and started a nasty rumor. As I recall Al Davis hired Lane Kiffin over James Lofton last year.

  9. Memo Says:

Ok, WTF is happening? I was getting all defensive because Al Davis was firing Kiffin. Now I’m reading that Kiffin & Davis would be together interviewing Lofton? I feel like a jackass right now.

  10. publius Says:

Even if Kiffin is staying, Al Davis is still the as*hole responsible for the pathetic state of this team.

  11. Al Davis Says:

I not firing Lane on Monday.

    …I promise.

    _________

And that statement can ALSO MEAN that he is not going to comment on any of the RUMORS that’s transpired in the last three weeks.

You are too fast to draw conclusions or lead people to your conclusion. What was the question being asked of him? Put it in context will ya’ Someone could’ve been asking him about a rumor and he’s saying ‘he’s “not commenting on any of the rumors that transpired in the last three weeks”

Put his answer in context will ya. Damn I just can’t stand when reporter take things out of context.

  16. Raider Buck Says:

I called Raiders Headquarters and asked if the Raiders are going to release a statement. The lady asked, “about what?”. I told her there were all sorts of rumors flying around like that Al Davis wants Lane Kiffin out. She responded, “Yes, that’s exactly, that’s what they are, rumors.” I responded,”So Al Davis is NOT trying to push Lane out of the organization??”
“No sir, we don’t have anything like that in front of us.”

  17. 137 Says:

    RaiderDogg,

    From previous thread, I understand.

I was just trying to make the point of those who decide not to pay $$$ this year, aren’t really going anywhere in terms of Raider loyalty, just not going to support Al Davis’ income.

  18. Raider Chris Says:

I am going to ask a very very simple question: Why would Lane Kiffin want to bring in a new WR coach? And do you really think Kiffin’s first choice is James Lofton? This is an interview set up by AL DAVIS, not Lane Kiffin. Clearly they have different visions and are not aligned. Words can’t describe how pathetic this is. Last time I checked this guy was coach of the WR unit:

Charles Coe, III is in his first season as an assistant with the Raiders, where he will coach wide receivers. Coe, 58, spent the past four seasons as head coach at Alabama State University, leading the football team to a 29-18 record and two conference titles. Alabama State went 5-6 in 2006, Coe’s only losing season as Alabama State’s head coach.

I agree - there’s a LOT of smoke. Period. And there is fire. This is kind of how it went down with Gruden. Deny, Deny, acknowledge, then part ways in a settlement. Quite sad.

  19. raiderrule68 Says:

Lane Kiffin had me up beat and looking foward to the team getting better. Now this!!!!!!!!! send your complaints to the Raiders at mailto:feedback@raiders.com

  20. Jeremy Says:

We are certainly more interesting during the off-season
than the regular season. That’s a fact.

  21. Al Davis Says:

    John Herrer,

Did you give that hack writer McDonald the line I told you to give him regarding the Kiffin situation? Do you think the Nation will buy that load of crap? They are fools, so maybe they will think everything here is hunky-dorey? hahahahaha…as long as the idiots keep buying tickets I don’t care what they think!

  22. Justin Says:

Jerry, being a Raiders fan is so maddening right now. I don’t think I can take much more of these underground leaks and rumors. I know Al Davis is probably loving this seeing as we are somehow relevant way into the post season but the fans want us to be relevant because we are still in it not because of this media circus junk.

  23. Terrapin Says:

This is great news. Hire Lofton asap. All I’ve heard is great things about him. Maybe our WRs will finally learn how to catch. haha …and develop Higgins. I’ve seen way too many body catches last year.

Now let me speculate: Its Al’s idea to bring in Lofton in for an interview and its Kiffin’s decision to hire him. Please take note of that sentence and what it means.

So a Raider exec comes out and tells yall whats the deal and you believe the PRESS over him? Kiffin the coach - case closed. Yeah there was some “irritation” over the rumors of Kiffins interest in college jobs. But thats by gones. Over. You guys know Al - all he wants is LOYALTY.

  24. Shawnraiders81 Says:

    I hope this is true.

is Al Davis really think a guy is dumb enough to resign when you owe him 4 Million Dollars.

Who knows, But I hope all is well.

  25. Jeremy Says:

    You people love turmoil right.

  26. FIRE KIFFIN Says:

I think if you guys start talking about the draft again, this will all go away.

  27. Shawnraiders81 Says:

If the media is pulling a quick one on us we should march on BSPN stations.

    OG -

I told you last night that you are right more often than not. So will Lofton be our WR Coach/Assistant HC or what?

  31. Mistabrown Says:

Raider Chris, how do you know this, did you sit down with Lane and ask him all his favorite position coaches?

  32. Oakglenn Says:

    Okay! Any other questions????? Good.
On to Lofton: the discharge receivers looked good. Someone asked, why is Lofton any good??? Well, Gates was a basketball player, has been there the whole time Lofton has and he’s now All Pro. Coincidence?? Vincent Jackson has played pretty well considering he came from that vaunted factory of great NFL players Northern Colorado. Plus Lofton has the entire SD Dischargers playbook and signals. Think that could help??? Plus he’s an ex player who I am sure could help our new receiving corp with their routes and timing with Jamarcus. Hire him Al and Kiff.

  33. Jeremy Says:

  40. Oakglenn Says:

And YES, Al I am sure did call Lofton and asked him to come here. Why would you NOT want this guy???? He could play the game as a player, he understands offenses, he has a very good track record in SD. Kiff had to throw a staff together in a couple of weeks. When guys like this come up, you grab ‘em. Hire him Lane! Pay him, Al!!

  41. silver and black chef Says:

Must not have b/c any silent observer could see that Godser was lookin’ pretty good out there.

Just an example of the clueless writers you read.

  43. raiderwill1980 Says:

ok oakglenn gotta stop you there…his track record in SD is great? the chargers leading WR is a friggin TE and has been for years, what’s he done so spectacular in SD? McCarddell was the best WR they’ve had in years, and he was a previously successful nfl vet

  44. KoolKell Says:

I’ve been a diehard for 44 years. I had my fun. I was there. But, If I can look forward, you youngsters, who weren’t even born during the Raider Dynasty, should be able to as well. Faith is admirable if it’s not misplaced. But, rather, you myopics, are enablers, part of the problem.

    KK -

If what you said about interviewing his successor is true than Al Davis is freakin’ Tony Soprano. If it turns out that you are completely wrong about this situation will you admit that you were wrong? Just curious…

  46. Nickatina Says:

It doesnt make sense that Al Davis would ask Kiffin to resign at this time, he has justed coached the senior bowl and scouted the crap out of all those guys, the college vacancies are filled, most of the pro positions are filled, there is absolutely no motivation for Kiffin to give up his million dollar contract, and Al Davis would know that. These stories seem fabricated by imaginative people, that have nothing to do all day but create stories that will excite people into purchasing their periodicals.

  47. FIRE KIFFIN Says:

    KoolKell - You’re only 44 years old???

I always thought you were closer to 144 years old.

  48. Terrapin Says:

As I remember COE was NOT Kiffin’s 1st choice as WR coach. I think the other guy declined and went back to Hawaii or something. I am almost certain of this. It was somebody else. And you ask why we need a WR coach?

Did you not witness all those body catches last season? I was just struck by their consistent body catches.

But who cares if its WR or QB or whatever coach. If Lofton’s a great coach, HC material, then you find somewhere to put him - simple as that. Can’t never had enough great coaches!

  49. Wake Up! Says:

Thats why the Raiders are so dysfunctional, the fans! I get it now old wise one…

    I’m 55, been a diehard for 44.

  51. FIRE KIFFIN Says:

    KoolKell is god.

  52. Oakglenn Says:

Will, I didn’t say they were great but I did say their receivers look good. They run crisp patterns, the hold onto the ball, they have a good passing game, look at crappy Rivers. Either that guy is absolutely unbelievably great, the recievers are very good, (neither of which I believe) or someone is doing something right. To me, that’s Hall of Famer Lofton.

Chef, he may have said his two worst years were with the LA Raiders but he was on that 5-10 team with Marc Wilson and Rusty Hilger. That would ruin anyones year.

  53. KoolKell Says:

Just more evidence for the myopics, that Kiffin has no control over his own staff, no wonder he wants out.

  54. Terrapin Says:

Speaking of age - a lil off topic - but I briefly overhearded on the Science Channel that they could potentially expand the human life by another 100 years or more. Something about diminishing free radical cells or something. It worked on worms or something and now they’re going to try rats. Next humans? I recorded it and will watch it later. Interesting hell - at least to me.

I have to say no matter that the Raiders are 4-12, they are not boring. Of course, I want the Raiders to win, but the worse thing was when Norv was here, and you could see this slow death. The Raiders, Kiffin and Ryan are all alive and kicking. The Raiders make you forget about the Superbowl. The Superbowl is more predictable than the Raiders….that is for sure!

various comments… one reason that Al has a long tether for Rob Ryan is that Al likes Rob’s father who is dealing with the Alzheimer’s of his wife. Al’s own wife is reported to be ailing. It is a quite human juxtaposition whether you like it or not.
if Lane Kiffin did not realize the bs perpetrated by bspn upon the Raiders before, he does now. Al Davis is not a member of good standing in the good ol’ boys/corporate complex ruling the NFL. I, for one, am glad of that.
Hire Lofton, fine. Make him the head coach if Kiffin doesn’t want it. I don’t see why Kiffin would not want the opportunity, one of thirty-two in all the world to hone his craft.
The f@*&%+g s#*t that comes out of the Robert Kraft fawners on a certain sports network is as disgusting as his effing tuck rule championship.
If Al was pissed at Lane for considering a life in Arkansas, I have no problem with that. Anyone who would prefer to sooey pigs in that wallow of the backwoods rather than to engage the Global Team and live in the Bay Area is worthy of anyone’s scorn.
I for one appreciate Kiffin’s efforts over the past year and I hope he continues to be and learn as head coach of the Silver and Black.

  80. Daniel Says:

    How about this scenario:

Al and Kiffin meet after the season ends. Kiffin wants to talk about the coaching staff and Rob Ryan in particular. Al says to Kiffin, “That’s all well and good, but what happens if you take the next college job that interests you? Where will that leave me?”

Kiffin gets testy and tells Al that Al promised he would have control of his own staff.

Al comes back with, “Don’t BS me, we both know you were interested in the Arkansas job.”

Al continues with, “Hey, I’m not willing to fire Ryan if I can’t trust you’re going to be here for the duration of your contract…that’s just the way it’s going to be.”

Kiffin loses his temper and tells Al he’s reneging on his promise (and the contract).

Al says to Kiffin, “Hey, if you don’t like it, you can quit. I’m not firing Ryan until I feel like I can trust that you intend to be the Raider coach and aren’t just using this job as a stepping stone to the one you want. Don’t blame me…I didn’t tell you to get in line for the Arkansas job.”

Kiffin says, “Well if you don’t trust me, why don’t you just fire me.”

Al says, “Nope, we have a contract…the same one you ignored when you entertained the Arkansas job. You want out, quit…I’m not paying you to leave.”

They hash it out and come to some type of understanding. Al succeeds in making his point that he won’t accept disloyalty or being played. Kiffin realizes Al has nailed him and he can’t really argue the point.

Three weeks goes by and the media gets bits and pieces of this exchange and fills in the blanks with what we’re hearing today. Kiffin doesn’t want to talk about it for two reasons:

    1. Al told him to zip it; basically insisting that what happens in Al’s office stays in Al’s office.

    2. If Kiffin wanted to talk about it, he would have to either tell the truth or lie. If he told the truth, that would include an admission about the college jobs and Kiffin would rather not talk about that fact. If he lies about the situation, Al will nail him big time for lying to the media to make Al look like the jerk.

    Bottom line:

Kiffin blew it when he entertained college jobs. Al called him on it and backed Kiffin into a corner. Kiffin doesn’t have any better alternative and realizes he overplayed his hand with Al. Al had given him enough rope to hang himself and Kiffin got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Now he’ll have to earn Al’s loyalty in order for Al to give him the keys to the franchise.

    Plausible? What do you think?

lmao!! Man people went off the hook! ESPN has too much pull here in the Raider Nation. 20 or so people said they wouldnt support the team anymore…I have to admit if Kiff was gone I’d be pissed too, but look at where all of this drama is comming from. That should end the worries…

I wish there was a west coast all sports channel. Im sick of hearing about east coast stuff all day everyday.

  83. Andrews mom Says:

Al thinks everyone works harder when he is yanking their chains. My old boss told me years later thats why he gave me the toughest jobs that noone else would do and why he yanked my chains all the time.

He said the more I yanked the harder you worked.

  84. Mad Road Dog Says:

I long for the good old days when the Raiders showed up on Sunday and played hard and I was no wiser to the inner workings of the organization between games. Now I am not sure who is more fooked up, me for caring what happens to the Raiders other than just watching the games or Al Davis. I sure hope big Al drinks hard because then when he sobers up he might make sense of things.

  85. Dakota Says:

Sorry, but I will not believe that this story is dead until I see a press conference where Al and Kiffin kiss and make up. Until then these rumors will not die, and our misery will continue.

I also will not purchase any team merchandise or follow the team on television. I will encourage every fan that I come in contact with to do the same. I AM SICK AND TIRED OF ROOTING FOR THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE NFL!!!! I AM SICK AND TIRED OF HAVING MY SUNDAYS RUINED BY THIS TEAM. Now you can say something to try and piss me off, but really, who should Al Davis hire to fix the Raiders? I have been reading this the entire season and have never heard that from you except for cynical stupid responses just to fire people up. Who?

Sure they could have come out sooner but I dont think it was a big of an issue, as those who keep a daily eye on the Raiders had seen it. Now it is more of a national thing they straigtend things out. I hope a press conference is scheduled or will be soon just to keep some peoples hair from falling out.

The record speaks for itself: 19-61. It is going to get worse before it gets better. On Ryan’s watch our defense has become awful and this year we allowed the highest yards per rush in the league. Plain and simple that should get you fired. Kiffin had us in position to win some games and the defense could not get the ball back. Firing Kiffin will certain assure us a few more top five draft picks. Kiffin should be able to fire Ryan and bring in his own guy, because, clearly , Ryan can not get it done. What ever Al had is now lost. Hiring Walsh and Shell was clear and compelling evidence that he has lost whatever edge we had. All of you Al Davis supporters are letting blind loyalty obscure from accepting reality.

  195. Bob Marley Says:

Gee, missed a few hours and come back to find madness….Sorry for the long post but please bear with me, I think we all have to wonder:

1.- Knowing what we all know about Davis (never affraid of a fight or a lawsuit..the whole Shanahann firing-money owned deal)….then I don´t get this:

If he decided that he wants Kiffin out, why not just fire him, refuse to pay him a dime and let Kiffin make the next move?.

If Kiffin wanted to go to court to get his money, do you really believe AD would cave? AD and his attorneys would fight back with their own breach of contract allegations regarding the alleged college jobs and even if Kiffin were in the end awarded the money, AD would probably look at the fact that he put him trough that whole ordeal as a win, let alone the fact that it would take a long time to actually pay him, if at all.

2.- If Kiffin is so unhappy, why wouldn´t he just quit and move on?. He´s 32, I´m sure he does not need the money and I´m even more certain that he´d have a job very soon.

In reality, when a coach is in a situation like the one that´s been ”reported”, the only thing holding him back from quitting is the fact that he has a contract and he´d be subject to repercusions for failing to fulfill his commitment and the Raiders would actually still have his rights and would be subject to some sort of compensation if another NFL team were to hire him.

He´s essentially being given a free pass to get out of such a ”horrible” situation, he certainly would come out of it smelling like roses, the media would make him the latest victim of a mad man, he´s rightfully viewed as a guy with a bright future and he would get a good laugh out of all the bashing AD would surely take.

I don’t get it, what would make him wanna stick around?..the money? really?…I honestly don´t see Kiffin as that kind of man, I´m sure he´d rather have his freedom and dignity than the money, which by the way he´ll earn somewhere else for sure.

It just doesn´t seem right to me, I´m not claiming to be a completely made-up story either, it´s just a little hard to believe the way it´s been portrayed.

  196. MidwestSilvernBlack Says:

Why are we interviewing coaches who have been fired from other teams right now? Isn’t it possible that frugal (maniacally tight-assed) Al Davis could locate a better “position” coach in the college ranks for less money than Lofton? It’s also funny that John Herrera did not state in the report from the Sacramento Bee what “position” Lofton would be coaching. If it were to be receivers wouldn’t he have stated that?

Post #202 was not me…some troll seems to like me.

  206. Dakota Says:

John Clayton claims the Raiders sent a mass e-mail to the National media reminding them of how great our past is? WTF is up with that? That is just pathetic if true. We have become a joke!

  207. stretch Says:

has anyone been here? i like it…..http://www.raidernationpodcast.com/

  208. Krowlz Says:

Strech..yeah its not a bad site.
Dakota.. You still listening to ESPN reporters? Have you not learned anything today?

  209. Dan Says:

By the way, why does Al want Ryan to stay if Kiff wants him gone? Shouldn’t Al be just as po’d with the play of the defense?

I throw that, along with the Dennis Green rumors and Lofton innuendoes on top of the evidence indicating things aren’t as bad as they seem.

  210. Dakota Says:

    Krowlz,

They couldn’t lie about that could they? That would be verifiable by any media outlet if true.

  211. Sheep Says:

    ATTENTION POSTERS!!!!!!

You are being lied to by the Media!!

Please do NOT buy into this propaganda that Al wants to Fire Kiffin.

This is another feeble attempt by an unintelligent headline seeker to take a cheap shot at our organization.

Lane has not lied to us all year long he has been brutally honest with us and until I hear him say that he has a problem with Al or that he wants to fire Ryan then we must stop reading this shotty grade school journalism.

Again this is just an attempt to try and cast a dark shadow on our bright future with Kiffin and JaMarcus.

  212. Krowlz Says:

Who cares what they sent though… Raiders and reminissing of past and reminding others of it is just standard. Reporters just want to make us sound more and more pathetic.

anyone like Top Gear?…Check out this VW Golf…with V12

..not a bad site for vids either..

  213. stretch Says:

i hope you are right sheep

  214. silver and black chef Says:

    me too!

  215. RaiderVic Says:

If this is true…the nation is screwed again. Complete insanity. The timing is perfect, our coaches have been scouting the senior bowl all week and have no input who’ll be drafted? Brillant!

Not that I think that Lane is John Madden re-incarnated but 1 year and out! So much for continuity. I hope AL has something up his sleeve, but I doubt it.

We won’t know the truth until Lane Leaves or Al dies. B/C neither one of those guys talks to the media.

  216. silver and black chef Says:

I hope Adam Shitfter is not some where laughing his ass off!

  217. RaidersSimonEse! Says:

I heard that Jeff Garcia is replacing Brett Favre in the Pro Bowl. They couldn’t get anyone better? WTF!

  218. Brien Says:

such wimps on this blog now except Bipolar Bob and a few others.

  219. Troll Says:

    C’mon Bob,

You don’t see Kiffin as a man who likes money? He’s supposed to walk away from 2 Million to accomodate Al Davis? Some kind of honor thing? His dignity? sheesh.

The whole football world is out to get the Oakland Raiders?

  220. snake Says:

nice that kiffin gets to inter view the guy davis interviewed for the last 2 openings at HC….and when kiffin goes the HC already with the team????? lofton was a possible hc 2 times and now will be a position coach EEEEEEEKKKK yuck, not cool

  221. silver and black chef Says:

Lofton wasn’t even considered for the opening at san diego. Off cordinator or hd coach.I would hope davis is not that stupid

  222. silver and black chef Says:

I DO HOPE that AL and Lane are sitting back laughing thier asses off!!

  223. Bob Marley Says:

    Troll…

Actually, he´d walk from 4 million, yeah, hard to believe..it´s all speculation on my part.

But you think he´d rather stay and collect the money when according to the reports he´s been stripped of every decision making power, told he´ll have no say in the draft, free agent signings, coaching moves or anything else??.

  224. ToozFan Says:

Michael Jackson in a Ronald McDonald suit playing D??
We have that guy already, he wears #40 and his name is Stuart….Oh I am an ass, just had to break up the drama w/ some Stu bashin’…

  225. drray Says:

any coach that plays mccown and isnt thankful for his chance to be nfl hc at 32 can get fired- al is right

  226. Raiderkoolaid Says:

I will believe that there is an ounce of truth to this rumor when I see the press conference. The media loves to stur up stuff just to try to gain readers or viewership and doesn’t care an iota about truth, or who they may hurt in the process. They view AD as a villan and so they jump on any unsubstanciated rumor to promote their stereotype.

  227. stretch Says:

has anyone email amy trask and let her have it? i did….atrask@raiders.com

  228. am I in? Says:

One thing i also noticed…. was that none of kiffin’s outfits had raiders symbols on it… i could be wrong on it… but it is something i noticed when i watched it, tho i didn’t watch the whole thing….

  229. stretch Says:

    what outfits?

  230. am I in? Says:

his underarmor jackets.. all the assistants had on raiders gear

  231. stretch Says:

    at the senior bowl?

  232. badmoodguy Says:

Dennis Green has not been contacted. Both the Raider and Green said so. That much of the story is a lie. How much of the rest of it is a lie is to be determined. Right now, the only substantiated part of the story is wrong. Makes me doubt the rest.

  233. drray Says:

kiffin has pissed me off since he played mccown over walter- if he goes so be it- raiders will get someone else and return to winning- the media hates al- and the media are completely fabricating many things- not just about the raiders-

  234. the510 Says:

    This is the only place
