After the deadline

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, February 28th, 2008 at 11:12 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Among the stories and/or rumors worth checking out as free agency is officially underway:

– Raiders defensive end Chris Clemons, the team co-leader in sacks with eight along with Derrick Burgess, hit the open market at 9:01 p.m (West Coast time) when no agreement was reached on a contract.

The word is Tommy Kelly’s mega-deal blew any hope of getting Clemons inked before the deadline out of the water.

– Kelly’s deal sent shockwaves throughout the league. I fielded a handful of e-mails and/or phone calls from both personnel men and agents who were stunned at the amount of money the Raiders paid for a lineman with 13 sacks in 49 games. If anything else, it made the Raiders relevant for a day, because the price of every defensive tackle in the league just went up.

– Running a zone blocking scheme means the Raiders won’t be necessarily looking for the same players as everyone else along the offensive line. Line coach Tom Cable said at the NFL scouting combine that two-thirds of the invitees would probably be elliminated immediately because of movement and agility factors.

With that in mind, be prepared _ there’s talk that the Raiders are seriously looking at 49ers tackle Kwame Harris. To Niner fans, Harris carries about the same reputation as Robert Gallery did for Raiders fans until Gallery moved to left guard.

– The Raiders extended tenders to cornerback/safety Chris Carr, linebacker Isaiah Ekejiuba and defensive tackle Josh Shaw.

– Wide receiver Jerry Porter hit the open market in hopes of his last big contract and could be headed to visits in Florida. Jacksonville is reportedly interested, and according to one source, Tampa Bay may be looking at him as well. The Bucs would seem an unlikely destination, given Porter’s prevous relationship with Jon Gruden.

However, Porter softened his stance on Gruden last year, and Gruden never seems to hold a grudge against a player he thinks might help him win. He signed Darrell Russell and in some reports was even linked to Keyshawn Johnson after Johnson hammered him in the press after his departure.

The Bucs have a staggering amount of cap room, with the capability of driving up Nnamdi Asomugha’s exclusive rights free agent deal should they sign Patriots corner Asante Samuel to a contract with a huge roster bonus. A roster bonus counts immediately for cap purposes while a signing bonus is pro-rated over the life of a contract.

– Jeremy Newberry, who made it clear he wanted to remain in Oakland, hit the free agent market, leaving Jake Grove as the center under contract being the most likely starter. That doesn’t rule out Newberry examining his options and still returning to Oakland.

– Newberrry won’t be going to Tampa. The Bucs reportedly have agreed to terms with New Orleans center Jeff Faine, the top-rated center on the market.

– There have been discussions with quarterback Josh McCown about returning, but he’ll hit the open market and examine his options until the Raiders’ coaching direction is clearly identified.

The Raiders haven’t gone out of their way to clear up the coaching situation to their players, but then again that is not their style. As for any talk that the players are rallying behind Kiffin or anyone else, forget it. They haven’t been together as a team since the end of last season.

Some players who live locally may stop in from time to time, but that’s it. They’re in the dark, like most everybody else, until the Raiders intentions are made clear. This time of year, they’re worried about their own sitauations first, and will deal with whatever staff is put in front of them when the time comes.

– Will Al Davis make another run at a Super Bowl star? Giants safety Gibril Wilson is on the market, and the Raiders are forever in search of a safety. Just block out the memories of Larry Brown and Desmond Howard.

– Why pay Chicago’s Bernard Berrian big money? His best years mirror the best years of Porter, and the Raiders seem to have determined Porter isn’t worth it.

– Jevon Kearse may be on his last legs, but if he will take an incentive-laden contract with a near-minimum salary, why not? It could be like Donovan Darius _ a proven pro who doesn’t make it out of training camp. But if he has 10 more sacks in his body, it’s a minimal risk.

We need Clemons & Newberry locked up right away. That should be a VERY HIGH PRIORITY. I don’t think anyone really cares about Josh McCown. He probably won’t fit into the new JR offensive scheme anyway. There will no doubt be a lot of deep patterns and JM can’t throw accurately any further than 12 yards. I predict AW will be the back-up QB - rightfully so.

Brayton who? He can move on with McCown. It will be interesting to see who bites on Porter and for how much. He may end up back here for less than he was making last year. It’d serve him right.

We should have a lot more to chew on tomorrow. Night all.

    —————-

I remember a few years ago when personnel men and agents were stunned when the Raiders gave a contract to a young DE who had played in 13 games with 2.5 sacks over three seasons — that was Derrick Burgess, of course.

This is typical media stupidity. Always getting excited when a washed up vet who put up big numbers a few years ago gets signed, but when a promising young player with a good future gets signed, they have to “digest” it.

  18. R8R_ERN Says:

“I remember a few years ago when personnel men and agents were stunned when the Raiders gave a contract to a young DE who had played in 13 games with 2.5 sacks over three seasons — that was Derrick Burgess, of course.”

    ………….

Burgess hardly played before coming here, except for his rookie year back in like ‘00. Didn’t he break his leg? Once it was determined he was healthy, he was a good pickup for the Raiders. 2005 was actually more like Burgess’s second or third season. He wasn’t as much of a risk, only injury wise. But we knew he was a player.

Tommy Kelly? Highest paid defensive tackle in freaking NFL history? What does Burgess even have to do with any of this? Stop insulting the man.

  26. SOUL^PATROL Says:

I think it’s a good signing. The contract is backloaded and I really doubt that kelly will be here for 7 years. BSPN’s John Clayton said he might have attracted a bigger contract in FA. Is that true? I guess we will never know for sure.

Next on the hit list is Clemons.

  27. Lowsown Says:

Wasn’t it Sapp who said Kelly was possibly one of the best linemen he ever saw? Good enough for me.

As for Chris Long, Dorsey, Ellis and D-Mac: Forget these fools.

If we resign Clemmons, Long is obsolete, and most likely out of our reach at #4, Dorsey and Ellis??? Not the run stoppers we need….and NO ONE seems to ever address this issue…they just pick the top rated DTs and say we should draft them…whatever. And what the hell with D-Mac??? Sure he is phenomenal but with Fargas and Bush…and possibly Rhoades, I ask you: Is D-Mac a NEED in this draft? Or is he just a wish? As it is we are set at Running Back.

Why sign Gabril Wilson? Because we have terrible luck at drafting safeties, and it frees us up fort DTs…an area where we excel in later rounds and always find gems.

Kwamie Harris?? Well, look what Cable did with the line we had last year. After last years draft all the girls here were b!tching that we didn’t draft enough linemen. As it stands, our line improved dramatically. I trust Cable to know whether a player will fit our system.

With these players signed, we can now concentrate on WR, OLB, DT, and OL without “reaching” for players who don’t fit or are overrated.

  28. James Sanos Says:

if any other team signed kelly to a deal like we did. BSPN would be calling them the smartest team in football for locking him up for 7 years.

  29. calskaz Says:

I wonder if porter is still going to change his number to 81???

  30. gannon for president Says:

giving kelly all that money may not have such a bad idea if they’re really serious about getting dorsey or chris long; the raiders just showed the league what they’re willing to pay for potential. plus they just drove up the price for everyone else. are the dolphins, rams, or falcons willing to pay that much?? we’ll see.

dorsey and long’s agents must be drooling….

  31. Native Says:

In an Article in Silver and black Illustrated Sapp was quoted as saying “when he’s (kelly)done he will be better then me (Sapp).” Now how great was Sapp?

  32. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Calskaz…

if he joins another team, he can change his number all he wants, it was only when he waslocked in a franchise it would cost him too much money to shift numbers

  33. Hobs Gnarly Says:

The Kelly deal is an interesting one, for several reasons we may never know.
    1. Did Al panic when he heard the Broncos were interested. He probably remembers McGlockton leaving for KC.

  34. ChargersChoke Says:

Get all the ex-Tennessee Vols on the team you can and I guarantee we’re Super Bowl bound, look at the super bowl participants recently and on one of the teams was a ex-Vol , we had one the last time we were there in Charlie Garner, Terry McDaniel was a great DB for us, we should draft Jerod Mayo or Jonathan Hefney, both would produce immediately , Mayo could play outside opposite Morrison and Howard, his fast 40 time shows he can be a impact player, Hefney is a mighty mite in the mold of Bob Sanders and would be a good strong safety.

  35. Hobs Gnarly Says:

    Sorry,
    2. He has effectively driven up the price for DL personel so if Denver is looking at Rogers from the Lions, their price just went up so Davis maybe thinks he stuck it to the Broncos twice?

Now with the draft it’s clear Davis is either going for McFadden or Gholston. Interesting here, they don’t need McFadden but maybe they could trade for several picks? Package him with a third rounder or more?

I find the possiblity of Gholston and Trevor Laws intriguing. Where they sit in the draft in round two they should be able to snag him. He would be a great addition and sub for the line to keep Kelly and Turd-ell fresh. IF they sign Clemmons and draft Gholston that maybe a terrific compliment at each end?

IF their intent is to run the ball more than pass the ball which would be smart given their lack of WR talent and inexperience of JaMarcus then they should pick up Olivea from San Diego

Marlon McCree would probably be cheaper than Wilson.

  36. Hobs Gnarly Says:

Since we know Davis doesn’t like to trade down and Huff hasn’t been the impact player he was projected to be, is this how Al gets more picks in the draft?

  37. ChargersChoke Says:

Hell let’s make the safety’s a ex-Tennessee Vols duo , trade Huff and Stu , Rashad Baker can whop them at SS and Hefney can lay the wood from FS!

  38. ChargersChoke Says:

LOL! Adam Schefter is an idiot ! Did anyone see his list of top QBs available in free agency, he had Trent Green ,Josh McCown and Byron Leftwich on it! LOL!!!

  39. ChargersChoke Says:

For anyone interested in why Adam Schefter has a deep hatred for the Raiders check out his bio at the link below, he’s a former sportswriter who covered the Denver Bronco’s for 15 years, he’s a inbred donkey!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Schefter

  40. Hobs Gnarly Says:

Ah I wouldn’t waste much time on him

  41. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Mjallo? testing 1-2-3 4?

  42. La Milicia Negra Says:

Schefter is always presented in media covering the raiders as ‘the former bronco writer’ if you don’t know this - well then I guess you didn’t know the raiders once was placed in LA!?

  43. Copenhagen_Fan Says:

Clemmons is probably gone. This means that we’re going for Gholston or C. Long (if available) or McFadden (Jake Long if he’s there) and then Trevor Laws if he can be had in the 2nd round.

  44. Hobs Gnarly Says:

On the previous blog #187 Bhp seems to be defending Kiffin, something I haven’t seen him do in recent months. He talks of Kiff doing what he said he would do as in shoring up the D. I wonder if the negative press on Kiff not being ready to be the guy has got Al’s ire up as a diss on him? I guess Davis has made up his mind in keeping him? I wonder if half of what Davis does now is to stick it to the press corp, not what is best for the team and that is just a theory, I don’t necessarily believe it.

I don’t believe Jake Long is the Answer now with some of the O-linemen that have become available, why spend so high when their is people available and ready to step in. The D-line and WR are still the issue for me. I would take Gholston then Laws one and two. I like Laws as I said more than a month ago. IF they continue to not want to blitz this is the way to go.

  45. Copenhagen_Fan Says:

We’re going with what we have at DT: Sands, Kelly and Warren.

Then we have 3 options with our first pick:

    1) DE - Long or Gholston

    2) OT - Jake Long

    3) SuperStar Gamebreaker Pick - McFadden

  46. Hobs Gnarly Says:

exactly Cope, as I said in #36 Gholston and Laws. Then sign McCree. The lack of draft picks makes this year difficult, so either they have to trade someone (Huff) to acquire more picks or hit the FA’s availble to be competitive this year.
IF you look at some of the more sucessful teams recently, you will find they have a lot of high draft picks. It seems every year NE and SD have two # 1’s, I think Al’s preference is to have a lot of 5, 6, 7’s so he can be credited with finding the diamond in the rough. Hard to do.

  47. Copenhagen_Fan Says:

HOBS why trade Huff when we probably won’t be able to get more than a 3rd for him? Do you think we can get a safety that is better than Huff with a 3rd?

I don’t think that we’ll trade Huff. I dosen’t make sense at all to me. Unless we can trade him straight up for a killer SS, and then try to deal with the crap we’ll have at FS.

  48. Hobs Gnarly Says:

If they go the McFad route it should only be to save him for another team and ship him for more picks while the other teams picks up someone who would be a reach at #4
Sands was a bust, Kelly was to for last year considering he was out for the season and Warren is oft hurt as well. Laws would be a great speller to keep the line fresh.

  49. Hobs Gnarly Says:

Sorry not my intent to say we should, I am trying to speculate what the Raiders are thinking. I would keep Huff but we need draft picks and he is probably one of the only players teams are inquiring about.

  50. Hobs Gnarly Says:

    gotta run, back later

  51. Copenhagen_Fan Says:

HOBS if we trade Huff it would confirm that we’re totally lame! I hope they don’t. Then we’ll have ZERO safeties. I don’t see Huff as a addition by subtraction guy at all. I see his as a player on the verge of finding his role and about to emerge. Let’s move him to FS and see before we ditch him. In any case he have stopped the TE’s that have killed us over the years.

  52. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Hey Copenhagen_Fan…

During the senior bowl our D coaches must have assessed that drafting Ellis or Dorsey wouldn’t possible or worth it. Money/production - my guess is they knew what Kelly brings and would rather give him the big check than a rookie.

  53. Copenhagen_Fan Says:

LMN it makes sense. The last thing we needed was a 1 gap DT that played the same style as Sapp who was big time expensive, perhaps injured and not game tested.

  54. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Copenhagen_Fan

Yeah lets keep Huff, move him to FS, if that doesn’t work try him at CB2. If that doesn’t work then trade him - then we at least tried him out!

  55. La Milicia Negra Says:

    CopenhagenFan…
    my point exactly

  59. K-Rock Says:

I hope the Kelly deal is backend loaded. Still, 18mil upfront money is crazy for a DT on a team giving up a million rushing yards per season.

I don’t think this was a smart move.

  60. TOWNSEND93 Says:

THE DEAL WAS SOUND!!! & CRAFTY!! THE CAP HIT IS RITE @ MARKET VALUE! 12MILL BOUNUS/ 1ST 3YEAR CAP HIT IS 4MILL YEAR, AT START OF YEAR # 4 THE CAP HIT THAT YEAR IS EITHER 12 MILL OR 6 MILL IT WASNT CLEAR , BUT REGARDLESS EVEN AT 12 MILL YRS 4-6 THAT IS AGAIN ONLY 4MILL TOWARD CAP!!!
THIS IS GOOD CAP PRACTICE BY AL DAVIS!!

anyone care to guess what that first sentence is supposed to mean?

  71. Raider Lifer Says:

STFU. The stupidity emanating from this blog is of biblical proportions. I would assume this Jerry MacDonald isn’t actually getting paid for the garbage he writes. He’s like the dolts at ESPN and NFL.com. “Writers” who turn 50th hand information into fact in their writings. It’s mind boggling.

Then, you have a parade of idiots, real IQ challenged fools commenting on MacDonald’s articles as if MacDonald actually knows what he’s talking about.

  72. eyepatch Says:

  75. kaufman26 Says:

Yeah, waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many people are all too happy to just suck up all the utter drivel that these Tribune writers spew out during the off-season.

It’s entirely obvious that these “reporters,” are absolutely consumed with anger about the fact that absolutely no worthwhile information is given to them by Raider HQ. So they resort to ridiculous stories about how the coach will be fired any day now..

Rate we’re going, any day now will be the day before the home opener or some shit like that..

  76. eyepatch Says:

18 mil for 3 years is not bad. The 50 mil is 7 years and btw each team must spend at minimum 100 mil a year so don’t get too involved in the numbers. We got a good player and a locker room presence for years to come.

  77. Raider Lifer Says:

Hey Eyepatch, you seem to have more than two brain cells to click together. Click my name and come to the Darkside. No need to talk to yourself here.

  78. M Says:

    Good morning Nation.
The numbers game says that there are not very many A-type game breakers among FA’s out there. Briggs could be one, but most of them are quite run-o-the-mill. Berrian only looks good because of a couple of plays he might make per month.
John Clayton, the only BSPNer I can stomach had a nice article yesterday proclaiming that most teams will prefer to do what the Raiders have just done with Kelly. Go for the known quantity already on the roster.
Getting Gibril Wilson will be a definite upgrade, but hardly an A signing.

  79. TheDumbestTeamInAmerica Says:

WTF are they thining. As I look into my crystal ball…

Crazy Al is in his electric chair twirling his life alert necklace on his finger pondering… “Well I blew it last year signing Turdelle to a huge contract. The chance of making the same mistake twice is not likely. I’ll do it 50,000,000 for 7. Done!”

You just made the same mistake twice dumb@55! Kelly showed flashes and I wanted him resigned, but geeesh.
Bad move Al! Maybe you should get off Lane’s back and let him make the desicions. I’m sure this is not his doing.

  80. holyghost Says:

    What Nation, fool.

There’s no Nation you idiot. What there are are Raiders fans of who share a common bond. Raider Nation? STFU with that shit.

  83. TheDumbestTeamInAmerica Says:

Now that we are paying Turdelle and Tommy as starters, they probably will not draft a DT. A look of sadness embraces me. Now I must consider how to cheer myself up. I guess either Long would do the trick. I will freakl out if Crazy Al did this in preparation to draft McFadden. If that is the case i think I will actually be mad enough to throw the 21 years of being a Raider fanatic away. This is lunacy. Crazy Al should be committed and then we can get some order in this place. It just seems like Chucky stole the old mans mojo and he has killed the team ever since. I’m still in, but I don’t know for how long……

By the end of the weekend after all of the early FA signing frenzies have taken place we might see a roadmap of where the team is going with its roster.

  100. TheDumbestTeamInAmerica Says:

At least Kaufman26 knows Bill Callahan - I’ll take him of my rant, but RaiderLifer is a power tool.

  101. Dan Says:

Maybe Kwame only sucks b/c of the system he was in. He could be a great fit for zone blocking, although I admit having no idea about it. At this point, I trust Cable to make good choices. Plus, it wouldn’t take too much from Kwame to be better than our existing tackles.

  102. Raider Lifer Says:

Hey asswipe, I’ve forgotten more about the Raiders than your texting smarmy ass will ever know.

    Hey euro, STFU.

  105. Noshadowking Says:

They would want Kwame Harris because Cable thinks he can fit into the zone blocking scheme well. Everyone out there begging for an over prized O-lineman it aint going to happen. We are going to grab people in free agency and the later rounds of the draft that Cable knows will fit in well into the system

  106. M Says:

    Morning Souldogdave,
don’t worry about the nabobs of negativity. Some people just can’t seem to see anything else.

  108. kaufman26 Says:

I’m not sure if Al really does ‘road maps,’ M.

    God aften LMN.

  110. kaufman26 Says:

Yup, Rob Ryan, I believe that is RaiderLifer’s board.

  112. TheDumbestTeamInAmerica Says:

Yeah right! What makes you the expert. Let me guess you got a Phd in Raiders while You where attending college at FU Community College for Raider fans that don’t schitzel. 113. M Says:

    Kaufman26
Road map may have been an ill-suited phrase, what I was depicting was any and all signings might point to what the Raider organization might be thinking about in the draft (after having digested what was available from the Senior Bowl and the combine).

  114. La Milicia Negra Says:

    GoodMorning M…

I think that Kwame deal is great, Cable will show why he was drafted in the first round!

  115. kaufman26 Says:

  119. kaufman26 Says:

why do you say that, Eric?

is there some news, or are you just guessing?

  120. eyepatch Says:

By the time they are done with free agency the money will be tight and he will trade the pick, especially if McFadden slips to #4, he has jerry jones on his speed dial anyway Its probably a done deal if it plays out that way.

  125. TheDumbestTeamInAmerica Says:

I am wondering if Cable was on board with drafting Henderson. He does not seem to be a fit or was too much of a project to spend a 3rd round pick on a guy that didn’t get any snaps last year. He does look like one of those off the bus guys that. Anyone know if Harris is a Cable guy or a off the bus guys?

  126. in too Deep Says:

if i’m being honest, watching our Raiders do things that are’nt logical then watching all the reporters and fans scurry around and try to make sense of it all, is in fact, very entertaining and a nice detractor to all things mundane.

Based on the way he played for the Whiners, I’d say he’s directly off the short bus. Then again, outside of Frank Gore you could say that for everyone that has played on that offense recently.

    EAGLES CHASING CLEMONS

A tipster advised us earlier today that the Eagles are chasing Raiders free-agent defensive end/linebacker Chris Clemons.

Several readers tell us that WIP’s “Mini-Reid” is now reporting that Clemons will sign with the Eagles within the next 24 hours.

Since our tipster has proven himself, we’ll also disclose that the tipster says cornerback Asante Samuel will be signed today and that the Eagles made a run at receiver Larry Fitzgerald but the Cardinals wanted too much, and that cornerback Sheldon Brown likely will be moved to safety.

Hey, maybe our tipster is Mini-Reid.

  148. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

I really hope Turd-ell and Tommy Kelly can live up to these huge contracts..

Next up, sign Wilson at safety from the Giants. Move Huff to FS…and move Schweigert outta town.

  149. M.I.A. Raiders aka Vernon Gholston at #4 Says:

Or if the falcons address RB with Michael Turner … Darren McOverated can be trade bait at slot #4 ? ?
    ________________________________________________

    TURNER TO VISIT FALCONS

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Atlanta Falcons are hosting Chargers running back Michael Turner for a free-agent visit.

Turner is an unrestricted free agent, and he is regarded as the best available running back in free agency. He would be paired in Atlanta with Jerious Norwood, and Warrick Dunn likely would be traded or released.

As Pat Kirwan of NFL.com pointed out during an NFL Network spot on Thursday that was sullied by the sunshine-and-sleep-deprived mug of yours truly, spending a ton of money on Turner might not be the best move in a year with so many running backs available in free agency.

Kirwan also said that the Lions are expected to make a big push for Turner, who drew raves as the backup to LaDainian Tomlinson.

  150. M Says:

    Morning Mistabrown,

if Clemons is allowed to walk does that mean the Raiders are targeting Gholston or C. Long?

  151. kaufman26 Says:

Yup, Lifer, I tend to agree with you.

  152. kaufman26 Says:

Yup, RRPL, Stu’s sorry ass needs to be shown the door, quick-smart.

  153. Bo Jackson's Hip Says:

    I have to agree…

It’s a head scratcher to sign Sands and Kelly to huge deals, while Burgess and Nhamdi don’t get new contracts.

  154. kaufman26 Says:

I’d still like to keep Clemons, even if we subsequently add Long.

On obvious passing downs, our Giant-esque line could then read; Burgess, Kelly, Long and Clemons. That line-up could take some stopping on 3rd and forever.

  155. Dakota Says:

Is Al Davis just f-ing with Lamont Jordan? Why has he not been cut yet? Is Al being vindictive by not cutting him now while the free agent market is hot? Or is there a salary cap reason for not cutting Lamont Jordan?

Is he scared that Jordan will pull a Moss and go tear it up with another team? If so, I would be very disappointed, that is not the way to run a world-class organization. Come on Al, grow up, you are 734 years old, you should have matured by now. Quit trading your good coaches or running them out of town, quit benching HOF running backs (Marcus), quit signing average players to huge deals and letting the guys that have produced for you play unhappily under crap contracts.

Get it together Al, or walk the fck away with some of your dignity left intact.

Before you go, please sign Nnamdi to a long-term contract and restructure Burgess’ contract to reward him for being the best DE on the team for the past 3 years.

We still love you for what you did 25 years ago Al, we just can’t stand what you have done to the Raiders since.

  156. Bo Jackson's Hip Says:

Should remove the “Exclusive” from Asomugha’s franchise…then we can see what he’s worth…if it is too steep we get the two 1st rounders as compensation.

  157. kaufman26 Says:

Al supposedly was too worried about what Cartman Jordan would do with the Chefs last year to release him and move Michael Bush up. That was a ridiculous stance.

I just hope to god that Al is not planning on keeping Cartman i.e. thinks he can still play.

  158. kaufman26 Says:

What I will say though, Dakota, is that I don’t agree about “rewarding,” Burgess.

Contracts should not be based on rewarding people. You give a guy a new contract because you think they will deliver in the future, not because of what they have done in the past.

Burgess’s production has been on the slide - 16 sacks, 12 sacks, 8 sacks over the 3 year spell. When he came here, he was hungry to prove a point.

    Now, he doesn’t so much.

Next year might be 5 sacks or 6 sacks, in which case why pay through the nose for that when we don’t have to (i.e. he’s still under contract.)

Better to try and keep him playing for a new deal with a big year in 2008, IMO.

  159. kaufman26 Says:

BJH - with Al’s track recent track record in the draft, why would we want to trade our best player for more draft picks?

  160. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

    K26,

Who else do you think we should go after in free agency?

Raiders eyeing Giants safety Gibril Wilson

    BY BOB GLAUBER | bob.glauber@newsday.com
    February 29, 2008

What little hope the Giants had of re-signing free-agent safety Gibril Wilson has vanished amid speculation the Raiders are prepared to take a run at him. A person familiar with the Giants’ situation said late last night that he believed the Raiders would sign Wilson for between $6 million and $6.5 million per season.

The Giants won’t try to come close to the contract terms Wilson is expected to seek. Agent Alvin Keels said yesterday that Wilson will explore the market before considering a return to the Giants.

  162. Yalls Trippin Says:

Heard some inside info on Nnamdi. His agent claims the Raiders are very close to wrapping up a Long-term deal. Nnamdi wants to stay with the Raiders, close to home..

    Not playing about it, either

    GO WARRIORS

  164. La Milicia Negra Says:

then split, nobody ask you to be here if you think its such a bad blog

  165. Florida Pete Says:

    okay…

    here’s how it works…

the Raiders do not invite problems by re-negotiating contracts prior to the existing contracts term…

they negotate new contracts AFTER the existing contract expires…

it has always been this way…

example: Gannon got paid the big money after the Super Bowl… when his contract wa up… even though he was at the twilight of his career…

it’s one of the good things Al does… he does pay people after they have performed, after they delivered the goods…

there is no point in negotiating with Burgess… he has a contract…

the Raiders tagged Nambdi… and he’ll have to struggle to get by on about 9.5 million… (4% of a teams salary budget)…

  166. Dakota Says:

    K26,

I am not saying give Burgess “Freeney” money, I just think he would be better motivated if Al threw him a bone or two extra just to show that he appreciates what Burgess brings to the table. Personally, I think every player should be motivated all of the time while playing in the NFL, even if it is for the minimum, because it sure beats the real world, but the players do not think like that. When they exceed expectations the expect to get more money, probably because when they fail to meet expectations the team can cut them…there seems to be some logic in the argument that a player should be able to ask for more money when playing well if the team can cut him for not playing well…

I don’t know, it all seems nuts to me when dealing in with those figures…I just want one of our best defensive players to be well motivated and giving his all to help us win, and if a giving him an extra mill or two will get that done, then as a selfish fan I would like to see it happen.

  167. kaufman26 Says:

If you’re on the level, Trippin, that would be the best Raider-related news I’ve heard since the team dumped LA.

  168. kaufman26 Says:

    RRPL;

Isaac Bruce should definitely be brought in as a savvy vet to work with Russell and help him in his first full year, IMO.

Maybe Bryant Johnson to replace Porter, too.

Not Berrian … as someone on our board said, he’d be James Jett II.

I’m happy to bring Wilson in, though we’re obviously going to over-pay, but we can’t have that puke, Stu, on defense any longer. And Eugene sucked too (even worse tackler than Stu)

    Other than that?

I’m not sure there’s a whole lot out there that is worth pursuing?

If Clemons leaves, then maybe go after Antwan Odom from the Titans. Randy Starks, their back-up DT also might be worth a look?

  169. Yalls Trippin Says:

It was relayed to me from someone who does business with Nnamdi’s agent in Bakersfield…A drug rep…It would be great news to me too…

  170. R8R_ERN Says:

whats going on with Tank Williams?

  171. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

    K26,

Yup. We may have to over-pay a bit for Wilson..but given the current state of our safeties and the organization, it is well worth.

    Bu-Bye Stu Schwag!

  172. Mistabrown Says:

    MAKING ROOM FOR DMAC ?

” Beyond that, the Raiders have explored the possibility of freeing up more cap room by cutting running backs LaMont Jordan and Dominic Rhodes.

Jordan is due $4.7 million in base salary this season. Rhodes is on the books for $3 million in base salary, as well as a $2 million roster bonus. Cutting Jordan and Rhodes would free up $8.3 million in cap room.”

  173. Dakota Says:

Please Miami, take the Clown away!

Dakota, do you REALLY think Bill Parcels is looking at McClown?

  175. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

  177. Mistabrown Says:

Well Tyler Brayton is getting props on yahoo sports. This fan left the following comment on his visit to Carolina.

“He is handsome. I saw his profile with photos on Richsoulmate.com, where celebrities and wealthy singles hook up. He feels lonely, doesn’t he? Is he looking for a serious relationship or just for fun?”

  178. Dakota Says:

    RRPL,

Like it really matters what Kiffin thinks, lol.

    Mista,

It would put into question Parcells’ ability to evaluate talent if he signed the Clown….

  179. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

    Hear that sound Schweigert?

The minutes are ticking down on your disastorous tenure in Oakland. Have fun playing in the Arena League.

  180. RaiderTW Says:

Mistabrown, Brayton was never looking for a serious relationship with the Raiders, maybeit was just for fun.

  181. kaufman26 Says:

    bwhahahaahhahahaha.

Hasta La Vista, Stu, you timed-on-a-sundial- no tackling punk.

  182. Dakota Says:

Come on Falcons, sign Michael Turner and take yourself out of the running for McFadden! That would give the Raiders the option of taking McFadden if they deem it appropriate, or being the team that people want to deal with for the right to pick McFadden!

  183. Yalls Trippin Says:

Brayton’s tweener ass would flourish on a Tampa-2 as an OLB…here in man he blows…

  184. Yalls Trippin Says:

Are we making Lamont rot, just so the MCFadden pick doesn’t look so obvious?

Im still for Long or Gholston…

  185. kaufman26 Says:

Who even knows for sure that Cartman Jordan is out of favor with Mr Davis?

We know he’s out of favor with Kiffin, but then it’s Mr Davis that has the ultimate power of hire and fire.

  186. Raider Ed Says:

I like Tommy Kelly, but the highest paid player at his position???? There was no way any other team was going to offer him anywhere near what we just gave him. The only way this contract makes sense is if Warren Sapp was right about Kelly, and he becomes a Pro-bowl 3-technique DT. I’m just scared we’ll have a repeat of Terdell Sands.

  187. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

Brayton would suck in Tampa-2 or man defense. The system can’t hide below average talent.

    Man….Brayton & Schweigert are worthless.

  188. Dakota Says:

    http://sportsline.com/columns/story/10674626

Yikes, I thought McFadden’s baby issue was limited to the one woman who claims it is his baby, but I did not know he has AT LEAST two others on the way in addition to the disputed baby…that is a little concerning.

Parents in Oakland, keep your daughters under lock and key if Al drafts Shawn Kemp Junior…

As long as he scores TDs for us, I don’t care! Maybe Al will break new ground by including a sterilization provision in McFadden’s rookie contract?

  189. kaufman26 Says:

Yup, neither guy has any talent.

They both are ‘try-hard,’ types but they are not athletic enough or intelligent enough to succeed in the NFL.

  190. Yalls Trippin Says:

Pickled - Time will tell. I learn towards garbage, too, but I dont think he fit in here at all…

  191. mike2h Says:

why is clemons being allowed to leave? i thought he performed good & appears to have a lot of potential.
while i realise $$ for mcfad comes from a differnet pool than cap $$. rhodes is still way cheaper to keep around than signing another rb that frankly we dont need. the raiders should definetly not be spending 1st 5 pk $$ on a running bk considering the guys we have already, the system that is used, & the more glaring/important needs on o-line & def.
a fast wr(that can actually catch & has heart)is anothe ‘must have’.

  192. Yalls Trippin Says:

Kelly was the priority, Clemons wants some bread for his 8 sack season. Plus, our DE is coming straight out of the draft this year. Unless of course its McFadden…

  193. Dan Says:

Two items. First, I would guess we cut Jordan and/or Rhodes after June 1st? That way we get to split the cap hit over two years.

Second, I read somewhere that if we sign Wilson, Huff will remain at SS.. Which is a bummer, although there was talk last summer that Raider safeties split field L/R rather than traditional SS/FS roles.

  194. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

I would prefer Huff play his natural position of Free Safety.. but if it means Schwag is out of the starting lineup, I’m all for it.

  195. Dakota Says:

Clemons is a 26 year old journeyman tweener whose only production came last year…let the Eagles have him.

  196. Yalls Trippin Says:

Michael Huff is 6′1″ at 200
    Bob Sanders 5′8″ at 206
    Rodney Harrison 6′1″ 220
    Laron Laundry 6′0″ 212
    Gibril Wilson 6′0 209

Gibril’s natural position is SS, Giants had him at FS last year. buh-bye stu

  198. Yalls Trippin Says:

Huff - finesse great cover safety

Wilson - good hitter, decent coverage

  199. kaufman26 Says:

    Dan;

We no longer necessarily have to hold them until after June 1. NFL teams now can nominate two players to be released whose salary cap hits will be spread over two years. But the new rule is that the two players MUST be released before June 1 in order to allow them to take part in free-agency.

In addition to this, we can still release other players after June 1 and receive the same benefit.

In other words, we can notify the NFL that we will be cutting Jordan. He gets to go into free-agency before June 1 and his salary stays on our cap until June 1, after which time it is split in two.

  200. Yalls Trippin Says:

Kaufman - great info on cap - good ish

  201. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

    Starting Secondary:

    Nnamdi A.
    Stanford Routt
    Gibril Wilson
    Michael Huff

A LOT of potential here, but we are going to need more consistancy out of Huff & especially Routt.

  202. R8R_ERN Says:

If we get Gibril Wilson(SS) and Kwame Harris(OT), we just need a vet WR and let draft take care of the rest.

    1. C.Long. or Gholston (DE)

    2. Conner (ILB)

    4. Will Avery or Royal be here?

  203. Mistabrown Says:

R8R_ERN, not so fast. If we cut Rhodes & Jordan, McFadden is comin to town.

  204. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

Is Kwame Harris a Left Tackle?

  205. M.I.A. Raiders aka Vernon Gholston at #4 Says:

    M.I.A. = Gholston

LMN, Raiderdogg, Huff24, Coach on Wheels, RaiderMadden, and others please post who you want for the #4 Pick………

Kwame Harris is not a LT or a RT, he is a BUST that pretended to be a RT for the 49ers.

  207. R8R_ERN Says:

Mista, McFadden reminds me of Marcus Allen, but I think that would be a mistake.
If Burgess is on his way down we would have the smae problem on “D”.

Obviously, Coach Cable sees something in Harris to want him.

  210. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

Hopefully Harris can play left tackle. I think we’re fine with McQuiston at RT.

We need somebody at LT…a garbage can would provide more protection than Barry Sims.

  211. Yalls Trippin Says:

Harris could be a better zbs fit, who knows..He’s Newberry’s potna too

MIA -I like Chris Long. With the Kelly resign, Gholston makes more sense.

If McFadden falls, scooping him to Jerry Jones for Barber and some picks would be my vote

  212. Quagmire'd Says:

I heard the Harris deal isn’t officially done yet.

  213. Yalls Trippin Says:

The muffed protection by Sims at the end of the SD game was way too embarassing. I would of popped that DBag in his head if I was JRuss

  214. Quagmire'd Says:

That Kelly deal really tied our hands with Clemons…that sucks!

  215. JB Says:

Let’s hope Uncle Al can bring Clemons back into the fold. He’s young, played extremely well when he was in there and is, or should be, the heir apparent to Burgess.

I’m still not sold on C. Long. I don’t believe he will be all that successful in the NFL playing against the big dogs. Besides, who says Kelley goes back to DT. I still want Ellis or Dorsey followed by Laws. We need youth & strength in the middle. We also need DE’s who can stuff runs and Burgess does not meet that criteria. I still say trade Burgess maybe getting a #2 or #3 pick, reel in Clemons, and start Kelley & Richardson at DE utilizing Clemons as a rushing specialist on passing downs.

As far as RB’s go, cut Jordan, keep Rhodes so that our RB’s consist of Bush, Rhodes, Fargas and Echeamundo (aka “Joe”).

We still need a #1 & #2 WR. Todd Watkins (the Atl. pickup) may fit the bill for the #2 WR position leaving the void for the #1 spot. James Hardy, WR-Indiana 6′-7″, 220#, 4.60/40 might be available at the draft pick we should get for Burgess. The remainder of picks should be spent on best available C, OT & LB.

Just my take on what’s best for us.

    we should get elam

    Niiiiiiiiiice.

Apparently your brain isn’t as pickled as your liver.

  218. Brown81 Says:

We should sign Chris Webber as an offensive lineman. Dude is HUGE!!

  219. Quagmire'd Says:

    C-Webbs got knees like Newberry….lol.

  220. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

Yeah, I wish that wasn’t how the season ended (Russell getting drilled because of Sims ineptitude).

You could tell that Russell was angry though after that play…from Sims’ missed assignment.

If I were Russell, I would have decked Sims in the locker room afterwards.

    “Daktoa = McFadden

    M.I.A. = Gholston

LMN, Raiderdogg, Huff24, Coach on Wheels, RaiderMadden, and others please post who you want for the #4 Pick………”

    M.I.A. -

My ideal scenario isn’t one that is likely to happen but here goes:

The Raiders trade their 4th pick to the Patriots for their 7th pick and their 3rd round pick. With the 7th pick in the 1st round the Raiders select LB Keith Rivers. With the 34th pick the Raiders select DT Trevor Laws. With the new 3rd round pick from the Pats the Raider select a speedy WR or OLineman that fits the Zone Blocking Scheme.

It’s not a very popular scenario but one that I personally would like to see. I am pretty high on Rivers and Laws if you couldn’t tell. Kind of like you and Gholston, who by the way would look good in S&B and I wouldn’t be upset if he ended up with the Raiders.
