Kelly breaks the bank

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, February 28th, 2008 at 11:46 am in Oakland Raiders.

Tommy Kelly has gone from an undrafted defensive end out of Mississippi State to one of the highest paid defensive linemen in the league.

According to Bay Area News Group Raiders beat writer Steve Corkran, the deal Kelly signed several hours before the start of free agency will pay him $18.125 million in guaranteed money. If Kelly reaches the end of the contract, it would pay him $50.5 million over seven seasons.

Kelly sustained an anterior cruciate ligament tear last season on Oct. 28 against Tennessee but was quickly off crutches and walking without a limp well before the end of the regular season.

Oakland’s other notable defensive end Chris Clemons, was still negotiating with the Raiders but could have a deal done before the 9 p.m. deadline (midnight on the East Coast). Free agency begins at 9:01 p.m.

“Also Tommy Kelly isn’t going anywhere. Trust me on this…”

So now will you guys trust that I know what I am talking about? My inside info isn’t always on the money but sometimes I do get solid info.

The contract details haven’t been disclosed yet but I am told that it is heavily loaded on the back end. This is a solid move and it helps to clear up the draft and Free Agency a bit more. The Raiders must be pretty confident about Kelly’s rehab progress.

Maybe the Raiders are looking to somehow get Chris Long or this could mean McFadden will be a Raider. There is still plenty of things that will happen personnel wise before we know for sure which way the draft will go.

  7. Draft Beer Says:

Wow they spent a lot of money to give Bush someone to work out with on the PUP

  8. mike Says:

wow. good for him. he gives us great versatility along the line. the question is do they play him as a DE or DT.

  9. r8der4life0408 Says:

I agree that this is a good deal. We are all going to have to get used to the fact that we are going to have to overpay a bit to get the players we want. I think with Kelly moving inside this doesn’t ensure that we will pick a defensive tackle anymore, perhaps we will look at defensive end; someone like: Chris Long, Vernon Gholston, or Phillip Merling. Like the move glad to see we are keeping productive players on our team.

  10. Raider Fan Says:

The NFL channel says we have only 3.4 mil in cap space.

  11. Quagmire'd Says:

    McFadden or bust!

  12. JB Says:

Signing Kelley is a BIG DEAL. He is probably the most effective well rounded D-Linemen that we have. As long as his knee is OK, he’s a very good signing. Now let’s lock up Clemons.

I’ll be interested in seeing who AD will be able to pick-up in FA - Especially in the D-lineman category. We need 2-DT’s, a SSLB or MLB and a coverage capable run stopping Safety. Then we can pick a gem up at the #4 spot.

  13. Kirk Says:

I don’t know what to think about this deal. $7 million a year for a guy coming off ACL surgery? I guess this is how it goes in the NFL these days.

That picture of Al on the front page is still creeping me out!

    me too, Captain Kirk.

    Draft-you are correct

Kelly is well worth the money….Sapp had nothing but praise for Kelly….and in fact it was Sapp himself that pointed out that Kelly had better stats this early in his career then he did.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The deal is a three year deal, the key words are $18 million guaranteed.

That translates to 3 years $6 million per year.

Please note Sapp was earning $6.450 Million this past year.

Kelly is receiving Sapp money as if he would have received if he were to play in 2008.

The contract is backloaded by the terms reported by ESPN.

The Raider cap hit is no different, other than Sapp’s retirement will be prorated possibly over two years.

That’s why Sapp is waiting to complete his retirement paperwork until then.

Nice post, you beat me to the punch regarding the backload of the contract.

I believe this gives them the opportunity to draft Long, for DE or Dorsey/Ellis, DT.

Kelly play DT or DE, and be effective either way.

The options are that no one really knows which way they go, other teams drafting after them.

  17. JH Says:

This can’t be true….according to all the journalists the Raiders are in a constant state of chaos….how dare they take care of business and sign the players they want to keep….I guess actions do speak louder than half truths, innuendos and plain b/s

  18. EXLARAIDERSEASONTICKETHOLDER Says:

Looks like we”ll have to release a couple of non-productive RB’s to create more cap space.

  19. Ghost2Post Says:

sounds good. Now if we draft a DT, game is ON!

  20. Raider Raul Says:

Why do you all think Kelly is automatically a DT? Solid signing, but we still have options to draft DT or DE.

    JMac,
Any idea if the Raiders are leaning towards using him at RDE or DT?

  21. EXLARAIDERSEASONTICKETHOLDER Says:

Jay Glazer from Fox Sports says that Trent Green was cleared to play. Could make a good back-up.

  22. RaiderDell Says:

    Fellow posters

You are fine and bright people, the cap is new money not on the books, essentially this is new money but it is replacing Sapp’s salary.

The Raiders even after signing Fargas have plenty of cap space available.

We won’t know until FA, what players negotiated to reduce their pay or who decided to receive a signing bonus in lieu of salary, which doesn’t effect the cap.

  23. Memo Says:

I just hope the Raiders don’t have another Terdell Sands incident

  24. black hole Says:

not worth the money - setting the bar rather high for players to come to OAKLAND…

  25. DaHitman Says:

this is crazy money for someone who was barely starter quality. FAR worse than the money spen on DaBig TURDdell Sands. Gerald Warren played better than both Kelly and Sands… Wonder if they will pay his 5 mill salary this year? That’s a lot of money to spend for a mediocre member of a horrible 31st ranked rush defense. The cost of S#!+ is going way up this year in Raiderland. Bet that Burgess isn’t happy… he’s getting like 3 mill a year and he went to 2 Pro Bowls.

  26. Jbarker Says:

Well kelly is a great d-end but his days at d-end may be over while in oakland, it`s quite obvious he`ll play dt since sapp is retiring maybe we can give freshly cut javon kearse a shot at end and i`m liking mcfadden more and more, reminds me of marcus allen . special do it all backs like this come every so often. we passed up on L.T. and Larry johnson, i`d hate to do it again………….if mcfadden gets the holes as fargas, jorden and rhodes did he will easily get 2000 yards his rookie season

  27. RaiderDogg Says:

nice posts RaiderDell. Keep up the good work as usual.

  28. Jbarker Says:

And as far as sands goes give the man one more year, I think his lack of play was large in part of sapp dropping 50 pounds, lets see how things work with kelly lined up next to him…………………..kelly is like 300 plus also right ???????????????

great signing. im stoked!! gotta lock up clemons now. kelly SHOULD play at DT. we all know the raidersare high on jay richardson and if clemons is back. thats three very productive DE’S who can share time. kelly should be in sapps spot on the line. G. warren will start at the oter DT spot unless we draft dorsey or ellis BUT with this signing i can def. see the raiders not taking a DT now. if dorsey is there id still take him. G. warren wasnt THAT great last year. he disapeared alot too. dont get me started on sands. id love it if the raiders juss got rid of him. so assuming the raiders DONT take a DT in the draft, besides chris long and darren who else can the raiders choose who is really worth bein a 4th pick?? im gonna just throw someting out there. im only saying it becuz of mylove for the cal bears but after seeing jackson at the combine, what does everyone think about him? do you think its just too early to take him at 4?

  31. Sean Salisbury Says:

Kelly signs seven-year, $50.5 million contract with Raiders

The Oakland Raiders stepped forward Thursday on the eve of free agency and signed Tommy Kelly to the largest contract ever given to a defensive tackle.

Kelly, a defensive end scheduled to move to defensive tackle this season, signed a seven-year, $50.5 million contract Thursday that has $18.125 million in guarantees. In the first three years of the deal, he will make $25.125 million.

The Raiders’ plan is for the 300-pound Kelly to replace the retiring Warren Sapp as the three-technique defensive tackle in the Raiders’ 4-3 defense. The move is similar to the one made last year by the Detroit Lions’ Cory Redding, a franchise player who signed a seven-year, $47.5 million deal last summer, the highest among defensive tackles at the time.

Like Kelly, Redding was an effective run-stopping end with some pass-rush ability so the Lions believed he could move to tackle, work next to Shaun Rogers and create a solid 1-2 interior defensive tackle punch. The Raiders believe Kelly can emerge as one of the league’s best interior defenders.

Kelly gained the confidence of Raiders coaches by averaging five tackles a game as a starter at defensive end. He’s had 13 career sacks, and the Raiders believe he can be a pass-rushing force at defensive tackle because of his quickness.

First, though, Kelly has to get healthy. He’s coming off a torn ACL that limited him to seven games last year. He had 30 tackles and a sack in those games. Kelly was going to be a highly coveted defender in free agency because he could play defensive tackle in a 4-3 or defensive end in a 3-4.

He came to the Raiders in 2004 as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State.

Think payroll, earned money for that year only.

  41. JH Says:

The team had 40 players under contract and a little over 30 million in cap room as of Feb 22 2008…unless I missed something (which is very possible) they should still be in good shape

  42. zackthemack Says:

This is a great re-sign by the Raiders. Signing Kelly is a nice first step. I still think we need to extend Burgess now. He really didn’t have that bad a year considering he was hurt for a good part of it. Extending him now would be the cheaper way to go. I would also like to see them restructure Warren. He was extremely cheap last year and we got enough production out of him for what we spent. Sands might make a comeback as some have said. I really hope somebody like Jerry Jones gets over excited about McFadden and trades up.

  43. Dakota Says:

    JH,

You have to subtract the Fargas, Nnamdi and Kelly signings off that amount…not sure of the exact amount but it must be close to $19 mill in signings already.

  44. KANSASBLACK Says:

    Dakota -

Don’t forget the Human Side Of Beef:
    Terdell Sands 6-7 335 lbs.
Thats a lot of beef, 965 lbs of it to be exact. Hopefully Sands will learn a little technique and play much lower next year. It’s hard to see a man that big get pushed around. He plays way too high and I don’t mean that he is on drugs!

  51. Dakota Says:

Kearse could at least show some of the Raiders where to get the HGH he is on, lol.

  52. DesertRaider24 Says:

Maybe we can go after Berrian in FA…

  53. RaiderDogg Says:

Dakota, if it is signing bonus, yes it is prorated over the life of the signed contract.

  55. KANSASBLACK Says:

I like Berrian in FA. Kearse wouldn’t be a bad addition if the price was right.

  56. Dakota Says:

Okay, sign Berrian and Gabril Wilson, draft McFadden in round 1, draft OT in round 2…we are set. The rebuilding effort takes a large step forward.

  57. M.I.A. Raiders aka Vernon Gholston at #4 Says:

The signing of Tommy “The Hit Man” Kelly and Justing “Lil Huggie Bear” Fargas further proves my prediction that DT and RB will be avoided at slot #4 and that the DE will be addressed by selecting Vernon “The Super Freak” Gholston.

    Sorry for the nicknames..couldnt resist.

  58. Raider Raul Says:

The great news is that the Raiders are taking care of the family first. It’s also great to hear that talents like Fargas and Kelly WANT to stay and play for the Raiders.
The media needs to stop painting a gloomy picture of the coaching situation. Kiffin WILL be our coach in 2008. Maybe Lofton takes over in 2009 or 2010, but things are fine now and will be even better after Al passes.

  64. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

  65. James Sanos Says:

i understand about our record. no doubt we have been horrid. its just annoying that no matter what we do. even if its a positive, it automatically gets turned negative

  67. NC-Raider Says:

    Dakota,
Totally agree: Berrian would fit well as a No. 1 WR, but also appears to have many teams interested. But I’m especially hoping they can grab Gibril Wilson at SS and allow Huff to move over to FS. Then I’d be happy with either Dmac or best available DL with the first pick. But they might even be in the position to go DT with the second now and take Dmac in round 1. Cable also made clear he thinks that the O linemen to fit his scheme may not be the big names at all, which means they may find some good “system fit” OL guys even in round 4, 6, 7 …

  68. Memo Says:

It is hard to argue against the haters because there assetments are true. Its no seceret Oakland is the worst team in the NFL the last 5 seasons & which is the only thing that been consistent for the Raiders.

  69. MaddenRaider Says:

I see we’re already blowing money on one of our underachieving, poor tackling defenders. I guess we’ll have plenty to spare, though, considering no real free agents will ever consider coming here in light of our coaching crisis.

  70. Memo Says:

    Dakota,

Would you be happy if the Raiders drafted D-Mac to play safety or DE?

  71. Memo Says:

Im not dissapointed that they re-signed Kelly. What would piss me off if they were to fire Kiffin.

  72. EXLARAIDERSEASONTICKETHOLDER Says:

Chris Carter was trouble the last years he was in Minn.
They thought he could mentor Randy Moss and failed, then got in trouble with a domestic violence. Basically the viqueens refused to resign him. I was in Minn at the time. I quess with time goes memories

  73. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

I like Fargas & Kelly, but neither of these players are elite that we re-signed.

Most fans outside of Oakland don’t even know who Tommy Kelly is, and Fargas only has one good season in 5 years.

I hope these guys can step it up a notch.

  74. Native Says:

Like they say NOBODY is let go because of money!! typical Raiders move overpay an underachiever! Instead of locking up #21 you franchise him! The Raiders are a great example of what has become of America a once Proud country now overran by illegal imigration and bills it can’t pay(just look at the housing market)! So the government wastes millions of our tax money on steroids probes meanwhile gives back only $600 or $1200 in stimulus package. THE END IS NEAR.

  75. Raider Fan Says:

James I saw NFL Live on ESPN,
Man I thought Sean Salisbury treated us bad.Chris Carter has brought the HATE to a new level.

  76. Memo Says:

Wow Native. I never thought of comparing our economy with the Oakland Raiders. But good analogy….I guess.

  77. Raider Raul Says:

    Is this Defensive Line enough??

    Run Situations:
    DE-Derrick Burgess
    DT-Sands,Warren or FA
    DT-Tommy Kelly
    DE-Chris Long

    Pass Situations:
    DE-Derrick Burgess
    DT-Tommy Kelley
    DT-Chris Long
    DE-Chris Clemons

  78. Tommy Trojan Says:

he will not be paid $7million a year, this is likely a backloaded contract(that will likely not be completed) that is loaded with incentives and the total contract value is the result of the duration of the deal which was extended to reach the desired signing bonus and break that number up over several years, his cap number for this year will end up somewhere between 4-6 million this year, he will be a high end versatile starter and either restructure his deal or be cut four years from now when he reaches the back loaded portion of his contract, this is a much more cap conscious contract than ESPN is making it out to be, but then again, according to ESPN “the raiders have no idea what they’re doing”, we had roughly $28million in cap space before this deal, kelly’s contract will bring us down to roughly $22-23million, calm down everyone, the sky is not falling, WIN, LOSE, or TIE, RAIDERS till I DIE!!!

    MaddenRaider -

That is a pretty broad statement. What if you are wrong and some real free agents come to Oakland? Will you admit that you were wrong or will Marley have to unearth this post at another time?

I have it on good information that the Raiders have been working on some deals which include a name or two that might surprise you and would definitely make your statement completely incorrect.

    Just curious.

  80. MaddenRaider Says:

Memo, to sign Kelly to a top tier contract? Giving him a raise would be one thing, but making him one of the top paid defensive linemen? If you own a company, and you have a department that’s one of the worst production wise in your industry, do you make your most productive employee in that department one of the highest paid in his position? You likely fire him, and his entire department, and their foreman!

Memo, we’re giving Kelly so much money because nobody else is going to come here. That money is surplus. Not to mention, giving a hefty contract like that makes it seem like everything is going well. And, of course, many naive fans are falling for it, hook, line, and sinker. All you have to do is open your eyes. We just blew a king’s ransom on an injury prone D linemen who’s tackling and run stopping never was great to begin with.

Today’s news does nothing but demonstrate that the train wreck is still in progress.

  81. Memo Says:

    Raider Dogg,

I feel like questioning your assetments on pending free agents. But since you have been right the majority of times…..I hope you’re correct

  82. Dakota Says:

Ravens released their long-time starting center Mike Flynn for salary cap purposes. 33 years old, 6′-3″ 305, he might be a better (and cheaper) alternative over a hgih priced free agent like Faine, or a better option than Newberry and his broken knees.

  83. Memo Says:

I totally agree with you Madden. This deal might not be as much a it is reported; but I see your point. This deal comes to no suprise to me giving the fact that the Raiders (the team I love the most out of all my sports teams) have done nothing but boneheaded moves. Lamont Jordan, franchising Woodson twice, the coaching carousel, etc.

  84. Tommy Trojan Says:

Raider Raul, if sands can step up then that line will be enough and warren can be delegated to an alternate role, also if jay richardson can significantly increase his reps, long would be a good pick, one of the DTs would be good as well, hell, mcfadden would work for me too, its nice when the needs when the draft meets your needs, the 2nd round is loaded with late-1st rnd quality WRs and mid-1st rnd quality D lineman, so, even if FA is a disappointment(which it will be), at least this will be a great draft

  85. Memo Says:

    Dakota,

How about drafting D-Mac to be the Raiders franchise center?

  86. MaddenRaider Says:

Sure, Raiderdogg, like you and Marley will admit you guys are wrong when it turns out that the only FA’s we’ve signed are our own players, along with unproductive rejects from other teams…

Give me a break. No Davis shill has ever admitted they were wrong, in their lives. Like master, like puppets.

  87. JRaider1 Says:

I am stoked we brought Kelly back but the price is very surprising. I hope people took into account the re-injury factor of and ACL in a big man.
Go to work man and earn that cash.

    Surprise, The Raiders sign:

  89. Dakota Says:

  90. NYG Fan Says:

Thanks for doing this, Raiders — now you just bumped up the price of EVERY free agent for the entire offseason. This bum is making more money that the best DE’s/DT’s in the NFL, and now top free agents like Samuel, Moss, etc will be asking for even MORE ludicrously gigantic contracts. WAY TO GO, AL DAVIS!!!

I’M GLAD THAT WE HAVE KELLY ON OUR TEAM NOW. BUT GIVE HIM THE “LARGEST CONTRACT FOR A DT IN FOOTBALL HISTORY”, ITS THE WORST THING I READ IN THE LAST MONTH (INCLUDING KIFFIN FIASCO)
I LOVE KELLY, AND I KNOW ALMOST ALL THE RAIDERNATION WANT HIM BACK, BUT WE KNOW TOO THAT HE IS NOT THE BEST DT/DE IN THE LEAGUE.
HE IS NOT EVEN ON THE TOP 20 IN THE LEAGUE.
AFTER THIS DAY SAY GOOD BYE TO BURGESS (A REAL PRO BOWLER).
THIS IS WORST THAN GIVE TO SAND 17 MILL.
MAYBE ITS TRUE THAT NO ONE WANT TO SIGN WITH THE RAIDERS (UNLESS YOU PAY HIM 50 MILL TO A DT WHO PLAYS 7 GAMES)
WHATS THE NEXT THING IM GOING TO REED?….THE RAIDERS SIGN HIRAM EUGENE FOR 25 MILL IN 4 YEARS BECAUSE THE RAIDERS “THINK” HE HAS “POTENTIAL”.

  93. MaddenRaider Says:

JRaider, glad you notice the “price”. When the FA season is about to begin, why do we blow such a wad on an injury prone d lineman who’s run stopping and tackling skills have been about a C- since entering the league? Because nobody’s coming here, that’s why; And therefore the money is sitting there.

But I can’t wait to see who Raiderdogg’s “surprise” signings, are. LOL. Remember, Raiderdogg never said they were good, just surprises. If I ever need a lawyer, forget the yellow pages. I’m calling Raider headquarters. With their training on word playing, who needs the bar exam?

Well, at this point, if we don’t draft Chris Long, I’ll be really disappointed. I was really hoping for Ellis, Long, or Dorsey with our pick. Now I realy doubt we will draft Ellis or Dorsey, unless they want to keep Kelly at DE. Which I suppose is possible.

$50M (with $18M guaranteed) is too much for a merely above-average player coming off an injury.

  95. James Sanos Says:

raider fan, i agree with you, i was stoked when sean was let go thinking finally the biggest raider hater on BSpn was finally gone. boy was i wrong. chris farter is worse. looks like a new level has been estabished

  96. ChargersChoke Says:

I hope he plays up to what Al is paying him , hope he does not do a Sands job on us.

  97. ChargersChoke Says:

Well at least he can afford the very best HGH now!

  98. raidrwrecker Says:

great signing for oakland actually signing someone who wants to play here..i heard something about copper carlisle opting out???.. we have got to draft long or gholston im tired about hearing of mcfadden we already have bush and huggie bear jr.. the signings that are a must are berrian or stallworth, gibril wilson, sean locklear, or jake scott at guard..kwame harris from the niners might jus be a steal and a good RT in our zone-blocking scheme but our left tackle will definitely be found in the 2nd round of the draft..anyone here wonder what Pacman might look like in a Raiders uniform??????????????????

  99. El NegroyPlata Says:

MADDEN RAIDER POST 80 YOU ARE 100% RIGHT

  100. ChargersChoke Says:

I got a feeling some serious house cleaning is coming soon.

  101. MaddenRaider Says:

Oh, scrolling up and reading along, and now noticing some of the Davis shills are downplaying Jerry’s story and saying Kelly wasn’t paid that much. This is getting funnier by the minute.

Plan A: “Awesome! Kelly is staying! And, this proves that there’s no chaos on the organization!!!”

Meanwhile, majority of fans seem to smell a rat, and wonder why Kelly is being paid so much…

Plan B: “Oh, he’s not being paid that much. The media’s exaggerating”.

Okay, then that would mean his signing is no big deal, wouldn’t it? Signing a mediocre defensive lineman to a mediocre contract is no confirmation that all is well in Alameda. It’s just business, as usual. (and remember, our business is losing…). Either that, or we’re grossly overpaying a mediocre defensive lineman with money that can be used to lure a top notch free agent. Can’t have it both ways, although you guys try….

  102. ChargersChoke Says:

Take the knife off the logo and replace it with a gun, Pac-man will come running.

  103. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

All I gotta say is that Kelly & Fargas better live up to the Ca$h they received….

I really don’t think Kelly is worth any where near that kinda money.

  104. ChargersChoke Says:

Better yet replace the Raider logo with a stripper and a dollar bill, here comes Pac-man.

  105. El NegroyPlata Says:

    RAIDER WRECKER:
We can bring pacman here and pay him something like 75 millios for 10 years. With this sign at least we know for sure that we are going to have a WWE show during half time

  106. RaiderTW Says:

    Captain Buzzkill is back.

  107. RaiderDogg Says:

    MaddenRaider -

Please refrain from your usual attack responses, I’m not Bob or Oakglenn so please leave the venom for people you actually have a beef with. I just asked a simple question and you were unable to respond. That’s fine, to each his own I guess.

Also just because I don’t agree with YOU doesn’t make me an Al Davis “shill” as you call it. Like I said earlier I am not Bob or Oakglenn yet you had the hair trigger response to my inquisition as if you and I have a beef, which we don’t.

Like I said earlier I have it on good information that you may be incorrect in your assumption regarding free agent’s signing with the Raiders. Also when I am wrong I have zero problem admitting it. As a young man I was wrong a lot and I had no choice but to learn how to deal with such things. I will be the FIRST preson to admit it when I am wrong but my question was what if you are wrong?

No malice intended toward you or anyone else on this blog. I just wanted you to know that you may be incorrect in that broad assumption that you made.

Ask Dakota or anyone else, if I’m wrong I will let myself have it right on this very blog and hopefully before someone else is able to. But either way I will take my lumps if I am wrong. Will you?

  108. raidrwrecker Says:

    El NegroyPlata:

wwe probably shows more action than our defense did last season so having pac would maybe give us a little bit more

  109. Memo Says:

Since the Raiders locked up a D-linemen it appears that Jake Long might be a possibility. Although he wont be the most popular pick, I wouldnt mind if they were to draft him.

  110. ChargersChoke Says:

It’s kinda sad for Burgess because he produced and at his age they’ll not gonna give him a big pay day.

  111. EXLARAIDERSEASONTICKETHOLDER Says:

    from ESPN Matt Williamson
    Free agent: WR Bernard Berrian
    Best fit: Oakland Raiders
Here’s why: The Raiders’ receiving corps is mediocre at best and it isn’t a secret that Al Davis loves to see his quarterback throw the ball deep downfield. Berrian has some Cliff Branch-like qualities with his elite deep speed and with JaMarcus Russell ’s amazing arm strength, this could be an excellent fit. Russell absolutely needs a receiving threat to lean on as he matures, and while Berrian is not an elite wideout, he is clearly an upgrade to what the Raiders played with at the position in 2007

  112. Memo Says:

    Raider Dogg,

Too bad your “inside sources” can’t figure out if Kiffin wil be the coach this coming season. Then again, neither does Kiffin himself.

  113. El NegroyPlata Says:

that money deserves to go to someone else. Period.
(dorsey or ellis to say someone)

  114. Memo Says:

    Charger Choke,

Burgess is still under contract till next season which is why he probably wont get a pay raise come this year. But with this signing, he is justified if he decides to hold out for more $$$

  115. ATLRaider Says:

I’m kinda getting the feeling that Jake Long will be drafted #4.

Kiffin & Al seeing Russell getting drilled against SD on his left side probably still gives them nightmares.

  116. RaiderTW Says:

Sign Chris Long & we won’t need Burgess

  117. raider83 Says:

chris needs to quit hating on oaktown its not our fault inside the nfl got canned after 30 years.go back to drinking yourself to sleep scumbag.maybe next you could help get espn off the air with your boring ass self.kelly better be healthy for that kind of money.if we could draft chris long our d line could be nasty. burgess and long rushing hard with kelly and the turd clogging up the middle.

  118. Bob Marley Says:

18 million in guaranteed money is a bit high but that´s what the market dictates, most FA analysis had Kelly as a player who was gonna garner a lot of interest, good to have him back.

At least one guy who seems to know a thing or two about Defense held Kelly in very high regard….

”Belichick called Oakland’s Tommy Kelly, a second-year player out Mississippi State, one of the best defensive linemen in the league.”

    Boston Globe, 2005.

I´ll take Bill´s analysis over everyone else´s, at least in here.

The talent is there, he had a bad break last year, but next season he´ll play at his best position and I think he´ll play very well.

  119. RaiderDogg Says:

    Memo -

All I’ve heard regarding the HC situation is that as far as they know Kiffin is the Head Coach for the 2008 season. Nothing has been mentioned of anything beyond 2008. Also I wouldn’t even necessarily call my friend an “inside source”. But she usually gives me good info when she is willing to talk at all. She has been wrong though.

All she told me yesterday was that Tommy Kelly was already locked up. She said it was a long term deal that was heavily back loaded with playtime incentives and the like.

  120. CopenhagenFan Says:

Jesus Christ! What a load of money for a guy who was hurt and was merely above average! I’m glad he’s back but that’s just crazy?!!

Don’t get too pumped about our D-Line. It’s the same one that got manhandled last year! Just MINUS Sapp!

Don’t get too giddy for God’s sake! That’s just pure cool aid!

  121. daniel Says:

Kelly wont be getting the 50 mill or 48, whatever, remmber nate clemens got an 8 year 80 million dollar, after he failed to do more that went down to a 7 year 64 million, relax!

  122. El NegroyPlata Says:

now we have a 90 Millions DL (kelly, sands and warren), Super Bowl, baby.

  123. RaiderTW Says:

    Bob Marley
I´ll take Bill´s analysis over everyone else´s, at least in here.

And Kelly was paid next to nothing as a undrafted free agent. Too many people crapping on the Raiders no knowing what they talk about.

  124. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

Who do you think the bigger Drunkard is:

    A) Rob Ryan
    B) Chris Carter

  125. CopenhagenFan Says:

RaiderTW…what compelling evidence is there that justifies Kelly being the 2nd highest paid DT in the league?

  126. daniel Says:

If warren Sapp and belichick say you can be great!! than id sign you for that money

  127. CopenhagenFan Says:

If anything this signing is proof that the chaos surrounding the Raiders is forcing us to overpay for average players.

  128. Memo Says:

Thanks for the info. I also agree with you that this isn’t a black & white deal. There has to be all kinds of incentives that totals $50 million. I hope the Raiders arent that stupid

  129. RaiderTW Says:

He won’t be once free agency starts. Would you rather he go to Denver? What, is it YOUR money?

  130. CopenhagenFan Says:

Sands was supposed to be great last year. But he’s a chump right?

  131. RaiderDogg Says:

Rob Ryan - Happy Drunk, buying everybody drinks, telling the bartender how good the drinks are even though its watered down vodka.

Cris Carter - Boligerent A-hole Drunk, pissed off at the world because he never got a ring and the HOF snubbed him along with that “lesbian” sitting at the end of the bar.

  132. RaiderTW Says:

Nnamdi was a bust to, remember?

  133. daniel Says:

he probably gets about 200 Ks for making probowls and 200ks if we make the playoffs, things like that

  134. CopenhagenFan Says:

RaiderTW….he also is getting paid because he came through…….You perform you get paid…not before. How do we justify DBurg’s salary now, when he’s like the lowest paid guy on our line?

  135. El NegroyPlata Says:

We canresign T. Brayton for a multiple year contract (40 million dollars maybe) and thats it we have the best 4 man front in the league (Brayton/sands/Warren/kelly.
with that we can trade Burgess for I. Bruce to the rams
and we can draft Mc Fadden now because our defense is “SO” good

  136. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

    “RaiderDogg Says:

Hahaha… So true. I could definitely picture that scenerio!

Chris Carter looks like he is Inbred!

  137. El NegroyPlata Says:

AL: Please give to Stu a 30 million dollar contract NOW, you know its very hard to find S in this times

  138. Dakota Says:

    El Negroy,

That is some funny stuff Negroy! Re-sign Brayton for $40 mill…sadly it would not shock me, lol.

  139. freezie Says:

The whiners just picked up Alex Smith’s option through 2010 averaging $8.25 mil. a year guaranteed, I’ll take Kelly any day over that mega-bust.

  140. Dakota Says:

I guess Sean Salisbury was quickly replaced by Chris Carter as one of the many hated ESPN Raider Haters, lol.

  141. ChargersChoke Says:

What was Sapp’s analysis of Sands? Was Sands assignment to just clog the gaps or just stand up the blocker? Ryan probably told him not to penetrate just to maintain his position? Well Kelly is a baller just hope he doesn’t slack up like most of them do once they get the big pay day.

  142. CopenhagenFan Says:

we could give Jano 2 cases of Olde English and a bottle of Ripple and throw in some X as a bonus.

  143. El NegroyPlata Says:

    Memo:
“Thanks for the info. I also agree with you that this isn’t a black & white deal. There has to be all kinds of incentives that totals $50 million. I hope the Raiders arent that stupid”

Do you remember the Larry Brown, D. Howard, W. Sapp, contracts…….. so yes.. the raiders CAN be that stupid.

  144. Scottish Raider Says:

I like Kelly but this seems a hugely expensive deal for someone with so much left to prove.

It also means we are probably stuck with Kelly, Sands and Warren. Adding an Ellis or a Dorsey will make this one of the most expensive DT corps in the league.

This just doesn’t feel like smart business. We overpaid for Sands. We are paying starter money for Warren. And now I think we are $10m over Kelly’s true value. Is there panic in Alameda?

  145. CopenhagenFan Says:

Scottish ..we’re paying the price for poor management of the media and horrible management of the coaching staff.

  146. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

Isn’t Turd-ell Sands on the Rob & Big show on MTV?

  147. ChargersChoke Says:

I would have drafted a DT from a big conference school in the 3rd or fourth who would have produced just as much and saved a ton of cash, it’s good to reward your players but from a business side it’s stupid , it looks like Al is starting to fade fast or he loves his boys too much.

  148. Scottish Raider Says:

    Copenhagen, too right.

It also strikes me that Kelly must take the Sapp role as the ‘gap-shooter’, with Sands playing the holding role. This effectively rules out us drafting either Ellis or Dorsey - because you wouldn’t draft a top 4 rookie and retain an expensive vet for the same starting spot.

Oh no, Davis is after McFadden!

  149. RaiderDell Says:

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    Nancy Gay for your enjoyment.

  150. CopenhagenFan Says:

The Raider’s strength of position in negotating with Free Agents (internal and external) is about as strong as a strung out bum who hasn’t had sex in 2 years with a crack ho residing in a country with excessive social welfare.

  151. RaiderDogg Says:

    Thanks for the link Dell

Just so all of you are aware the contract that Tommy Kelly just signed is pretty damn close to the same deals that the Saints and the Broncos were both prepared to offer Kelly. So the Donkeys and the Aints were both poised and ready to “overpay” for Kelly’s services as well. Al Davis rewarded Tommy Kelly with a contract that is the market rate for a DT in the NFL. And don’t get the numbers twisted, it is 18 million guaranteed not 50 million.

  152. Dakota Says:

    Scottish,

Are you still down on Chris long? You never responded to my Chris Long analysis the other day…check out post #470 on the Tampering thread if you want a second chance…

Just curious as to your opinion…not looking to start an argument or anything.

  153. Scottish Raider Says:

    Dakota,

    New thread.

  154. M.I.A. Raiders aka Vernon Gholston at #4 Says:

Thank you Bob Marley for that post by providing clarity on all this nonsense. Bill Belicheat is wiser on evaluating talent than anyone on this blog.

  155. M Says:

So many here have wished for the flawed entities of Shaun Rogers and/or Justin Smith to be picked by the Raiders. Exactly how much of a cap hit would either of them/both been? Whaddaya do when those guys bust? Jason Whitlock had a good article demonstrating the worthlessness of J. Smith. Rogers? Is there a reason that the Lions gave up on him. YPRush stats tell the story.
Kelly wants to be here. Reward the player.
And for some bloggers who shall remain unidentified (you know who you are), it does not matter what the organization does, you are going to find fault with it.

  156. ToozFan Says:

Cris Carter is a steaming pile w/ a pair of glasses.

Kelly’s deal will only be for mega-money if he actually plays it out, and if he does get to the end, it’ll have been reworked a couple of times at least.
Regardless, AL had to keep him around, and lets wait til some of these other deals get done this weekend to start crying. There will be some crazy $$$ thrown around in the opening weekend of free Agency.

  157. snake Says:

although alot of money, I like the move. It shows the team is going to pay young players that give effort first. Something just like this happened in tampa bay before there super bowl run, the targeted there own young up and comers first before any outside free agents, frankly alot of money but in 2 years he will be cheap even if he is playing 70% of the snaps.

  158. Yalls Trippin Says:

    Good deal, Al…

Kelly can play the inside well and be an end in a 3-4…Good stuff. We’d be 3-13 if it were’nt for Kelly’s blocked kick..

Chill, guys, no way Kelly sees half that dough…We have good bank right now. All would’nt be stupid enough to let Kelly’s contract dictate what our other offseason priorities are…

  159. M.I.A. Raiders aka Vernon Gholston at #4 Says:

Do you guys honestly think we can land Berrian? If not, do we call Stallworth? I think these are the only 2 FA WR worth looking at…..

  160. M.I.A. Raiders aka Vernon Gholston at #4 Says:

    POSTED 6:10 p.m. EST, February 28, 2008

    CHARGERS TRIM A TRIO

After trying unsuccessfully to trade Pro Bowl fullback Lorenzo Neal, the Chargers have dumped him, along with two other veterans.

Also gone are safety Marlon McCree and tackle Shane Olivea.

Neal was signed through 2010, at base salaries of $1.5 million, $1.5 million, and $1.75 million. McCree has a base salary of $2.765 million in 2008, $3 million in 2009, and $3 million in 2010. And Olivea was under contract through 2011 at a salary of $2 million this year, and then $2.5 million, $2.65 million, and $3.075 million over the next three.

  161. Just Win Baby Says:

Refreshing to see actual facts reported today. I hope Kelly’s play merits this outstanding contract. What does everyone keep clamoring about Clemons for? I would prefer to see Burgess re-signed.

  162. jivethug987 Says:

fargas was good for us last year but ill put $100 on us taking McFadden.. not that i agree with it but we will.

  163. RaiderRandy Says:

This was great news - the contract is BACKLOADED and we are NOT devestated financially by signing a good versatile D lineman, he can play DT or DE depending on how the draft goes this can be very valuable. If you think this was overpaying wait until you see what some of these older “has beens” get on the open market - I think we got value all the way around and built in flexibility. He is a solid run stopper. Great move by Al…..everyone thought Glover & Coleman were average too when they played in Oakland then they starred else where for big money. Let’s see what this kid can do I like what i have seen so far in him.

  164. jivethug987 Says:

    lets bring randy moss back

  165. RaiderRandy Says:

Once the free agency market settles and we see if we have closed up some holes then the draft will become clear…..I like Chris Long, Ellis or McFadden, if McFadden is gone we select either of the other 2 and move Kelly. Long takes DE right away and is a star, Kelly moves to DT, Pick Ellis at DT and move Kelly to DE….either way we are going to grab a stud on draft day.

  166. Bodiddly Says:

Stupid move to pay this guy 3 times his value. The team has a tremendous amount of cap space tied up in 2 players of dubious distinction.

  167. NC-Raider Says:

I keep hearing about Chris Long, and frankly agree that the guy would be a great pick. (I no longer will be horrified it they go DMac but would still prefer one of the D linemen .. whoever is best available at #4). But that’s just it, do you think there is any chance of Long being on the board still? He may even be the first pick. But Long, Ellis, Dorsey, Golston … ONE of them has to be there at #4. And all would be great picks.

It’s worth keeping in mind how high that second pick is too: whatever happens in Round 1, there is still a solid opportunity to get a very good DL, WR, or safety at #35 (at least I think that’s the pick).

And in free agency, I hope these rumors of Berrian and Gibril Wilson pining for the Bay area are true…

  168. Raiderkev25 Says:

I like DT Tommy Kelly alot, he’s versatile and all that, but we payed entirely too much money for a player of his caliber especially not knowing how he’s gonna come back after an anterior cruciate ligament injury! I can see 5yrs/25-30 mil but 7yrs/50.5? He better produce pro bowl numbers I tell ya that much! And what’s up with the lucrative deal talk about DE Chris Clemons? Has DE Burgess fell out of favor that much? I can see now that the Raiders are gonna trade DE Burgess. They will try to trade RB Rhodes for a pick. They may trade CB Fabian Washington for a draft pick. Perhaps CB Namdi may be traded to ATL for CB DeAngelo Hall! I personally wouldn’t be mad about that trade. Don’t be surprised if S Michael Huff name comes up as trade bait either. I would trade him and DT Sands right now for ATL CB Deangelo Hall. Only other player i would trade Huff for would be SS Roy Williams who would be great for us as an enforcer. We need a enforcer of his caliber to deal with the running backs we have in our division. With this being said, the Raiders are now looking to draft RB Darren Mcfadden! In a couple hours we better make a pitch for a WR and a SS, and a low key OT talent. I say go for wr Stallworth, Berrian, Bryant Johnson. I would also look into the old man Isaic Bruce!

  169. Midwest-Raider Says:

I like the signing Kelly will never see $50 million, what you pay him 2-3 million yr. with maybe bonus money? Look how much we have just cost other teams trying to sigh stars saying they want more and more guaranteed money.Go after that go for Berrian and Gibril Wilson in F/A or Stallworth draft McFadden 1St round will have inproved both side of the ball and look for depth in the other rounds

  170. Raiderkev25 Says:

…as for SS goes I would look at unrestricted free agent Gibril Wilson. If we don’t wanna spend alot of money on that position I say someone like SS Coy Wire.

  171. RFFL Says:

Barry Sims has got to go! Period!

  172. Midwest-Raider Says:

I would trade Fabion and a 4th round for Deangelo Hall,Bring us back to the Lester Hayes-Mike Haines days with 2 shut down corners but no way you trade Namdi!

  173. blowin bagz 209 Says:

WOW….we totally OVERPAID/OVERSPENT/OVERREACHED/ and any other type of over that u can think of on Tommy Kelly ( he got a super mega deal 4 blocking a game winning field goal last year)????….c’mon!!!!

  174. Tweekintekin Says:

Wow, I don’t get it. That’s a lot for a guy who has played as little as he has. I hope he is the new Warren Sapp and not just his replacement.

  175. 92058 Raider Says:

I really hope this was a good signing Terdell was getting tossed like salad & he was way too too overpaid. It’s hard to take Sapp’s word for Kelly being a good player that’s what he said about Terdell I’mm positively sure We”ll get Terdell to take a pay cut

  176. Dark Forces Says:

This is right up there with the Desmond Howard deal. $18 million? dumb.

  177. Bill Says:

Kelly is way over rated, we couldn’t sign Asomugha, but we could give Kelly that much. Just terrible.

  178. Charlie Says:

Good signing. Still alot of questions about Kelly(injury),Sands(consistency)and Warren(intensity).
Draft ELLIS and sign Clemons. Cut Jordan and Rhodes.
Bush, Fargas and Joe are more than enough at RB.
FORGET MCFADDEN! He is not even the best RB in the draft!

  179. jp chips Says:

It cant be a good signing with alot of questions. If you sign a player to the highest contract for a DL their better be no Questions to whether he’s healty or even a pro bowl player. You dont spend money like that for a guy who had 1 good season coming off an injury. This is why this organization has been so inept the last couple of years.we were all excited when we got rhoads last year.

  180. donny Says:

    WTF!!!

    Clemons should have been re-signed…

50 mil for a player that hasn’t made it to 1 f~cken Pro Bowl!!! WTF!!!

and then overpaying for injury prone J.Walker… WTF!!!

    What’s Javon going to do?

Both those signings are exactly the reason why the RAIDERS will ALWAYS SUCK!!! AND I AM A REAL FAN… KEEPING IT REAL… AL DAVIS let Chucky and Bruce Allen get away…. That’s when the Raiders decided to suck!!! and they will suck for a long time…. especially overpaying players that are not even top 10 at their positions…

It just does not make sense… and ANYBODY who thinks these signings makes sense and make the RAIDERS better for the long run is just plain smoking crack…

Bernard Berrian was a better choice…. At least he’s healthy most of the season…
Chris Clemons is going to be a BEAST at D-End!!!

    Sincerely,
Donny “A Fed Up Raider Fan…”
