Funny money

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 at 2:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Apparently sensitive to the perception that they are recklessly throwing millions of dollars at free agents who ordinarily wouldn’t give the Raiders a second look, the club took the unusual step Wednesday of confirming (or in their mind, correcting) some salary figures.

If this has ever happened before, I can’t remember when. Frankly, the idea of being free spenders is good publicity, because it brings interest and a sense of confidence not only for the fan base, but draws in more potential free agents.

The particulars as relayed by a team executive in a phone call:

– The Javon Walker deal will pay the wide receiver $16 million over two seasons. Walker got $6 million to sign and salaries of $5 million each of the next two seasons.

The rest of the deal is heavily backloaded with money Walker won’t see unless he approaches the 89 receptions, 1,392 yards and 12 touchdowns compiled in Green Bay in 2004.

Given that players are seldom if ever cut after one year after receiving a sizable signing bonus, Walker has essentially been guaranteed $16 million.

– The Kwame Harris deal is essentially one year for $3 million, giving both the club and Harris the chance to revisit the situation after one season. There was never any guaranteed money reported regarding Harris’ signing.

Most fans understand the figures associated with the entire deal are blown out of proportion by inflated salaries on the back end. The club seldom intends to pay them, and the extra years are added to spread out the salary cap hit on the bonus.

Tommy Kelly’s deal includes $29.5 million in salary over the last five years, $19.5 million over the last three years. If Kelly isn’t as good as the Raiders expect, he’ll never see that money.

Walker’s contract has salaries of $10 million on the back end. Those checks will probably never be written.

Still, the up front money has been considerable, and Al Davis has put everyone on notice that he isn’t afraid to take a chance and write huge checks to get his team turned around.

As for Lane Kiffin, he hasn’t been quoted in a single press release regarding any of the signings. Nor are the Raiders taking advantage of the signings with regard to the news cycle by trotting their new players out for a press conference or conference call, as the 49ers did with Justin Smith and Isaac Bruce.

It was standard procedure when the Raiders were winning division titles, but something they got away from once the losses began to pile up. Still, there were usually quotes attributed to the head coach, filtered through the team, about how happy he was to have so-and-so aboard.

In the photo of Walker signing his deal on Raiders.com, the receiver is flanked not by Kiffin, but by defensive backs coach Willie Brown.

Since the Raiders left the Senior Bowl, Kiffin has declined to speak on the record regarding his status with the club. While that might not be unusual, it is at least a little strange that Kiffin has had nothing to say via club press release about the deals worked out with Justin Fargas, Kelly, Gibril Wilson, Walker and Harris.

Nor did he give a public thanks through the team to Barry Sims for nine years of service.

But at least he got that dancing issue cleared up.

As much of you enjoy hating and bashing Al Davis…Truth be told the man is a genius with contracts…Look at the man’s track record.

We did exactly what I wanted via Free Agency…Walker and Russell tandem is going to be a thing of beauty!!

Walker is serious about his game. The man practiced (while in Donkey town) catching balls from Cutler blindfolded!!! He is a True Pro Bowl Caliber Receiver and is a perfect compliment to our Franchise QB.

Ive had a smile on my face since last night..a truly great acquisition, injury record and all.

I do know that there are injury clauses from some of the debate that went on with JRs contract. His (JRs) 30 million was not really guaranteed but like every contract has certain conditions to meet to get the “guaranteed” money. I also know that Raider contracts tend to be some of the more complex because of ADs fondness of incentives. I also know that both Kelly’s and Walker’s contract numbers no doubt came from agents that like to put their clients in the best light to use a bragging rights to get more clients because Oakland often does not comment on contracts.

Having said all this, considering the amount of money involved and how it affects our draft strategy and success next year, it would be nice to know how the recovery is going for Kelly and Walker and also it would be good to put that out there to fans that just because it says guaranteed the player does not get 16 or 18 million for showing up to practice and blowing out his knee. The guarantee has to do with if he is cut prematurely, they still get the guaranteed money.

We did great in Free Agency! No matter what all the talking heads say.

  11. Trevor Says:

    Comments on Javon Walker:
    • Javon Walker, if healthy, is a perfect fit for our needs as a #1-caliber WR
    • Javon Walker’s deal includes $16 million guaranteed. He’ll make $27 million in the first three years.
    • Javon Walker, if healthy, is not worth that kind of money, and neither is any other WR for that matter.
    • Javon Walker will be 30 years old in October.
    • Javon Walker’s mental state is a question mark after Darrent Williams died in his arms. Although, he did start off strong last year so I’m inclined to believe he is okay mentally.
    • Javon Walker missed several months last season because of his knee, WITHOUT EVEN REALLY TAKING AN INJURY-CAUSING A HIT TO IT. He seemed to be ok in the Jags game in week 3, then all of a sudden during the week his knee was inflamed and he was unable to practice, next thing you know he is out for week 4, next thing you know he is still out in week 11. That concerns me a lot.

I am not really sure how big of a concern the knee is. I am certainly not going to feel confident about it just because we gave him a lot of money and therefore “we must have checked it out.” He is exactly what we need as a #1-caliber WR but we are really in trouble if he is less than 90% for a significant number of games. One of the problems with injured players is that they tend to not go all-out on struggling teams, and we will probably be a struggling team, even if things come together we are looking at 8-8 as a realistic goal. We cannot afford to have Russell trying to develop with just Ronald Curry and no one else as a threat at WR. And let’s not forget Curry does not have the best track record of staying healthy either.

    High-reward, VERY high risk signing.

  12. papiraider Says:

I like the new aquisitions alot. We need depth at WR and OL no matter the cost. These signings are holes we desperately needed to plug. It would make the draft a lot more interesting. Regarding the Kiffin situation, IT STINKS. Something is up and Jerry knows about it because he has spoken with Kiffin of the record this is why he keeps bringigng Kiffin tidbits here and there on every other blog. He is flirting with the news. You are a true professional Jerry cause its obvious you are dying to say something but you promised the kid you would keep it off the record. Hope the kid comes around and gives you a green light to adress the situation….

  31. 1960AutumWind Says:

    Tommy

That was a great post on the previous thread which essentially just wraps up what Jerry was saying. What Jerry did not say and what you said and I said though is the injury clauses which are very important for people coming off injuries especially ankle sprains or tears or knee sprains or tears. We will never hear about those details but they are there because every time we get a glimse into a full blown contract they are in there.

  32. Quagmire'd Says:

Tommy, what do you do exactly?

  33. True Says:

I see the relentlessness of those that question. They cannot find an answer and so they lash out like little dogs yipping at the heels of the Wise Man who is silent. To answer is foolishness, he is silent because he is wise. Let them swim in a sea of Question Marks. Hopefully they will find one that floats that they might not drown in their quandary.
Lane Kiffin will speak but not with words, but with deeds, the deeds that will come in the 2008 season. Al Davis’ middle name is Wisdom. He is a mentor, he has a student, the student has already leaned silence. He has learned much in 2007, 2008,not too disreputable for the youngest coach in the NFL.

  34. They Call Me Assassin Says:

Michael - I recognize you wanting us to get a DT but it doesn’t need to be at #4. Many of us have stated that plenty of solid DT’s will be available with the 2nd pick. We can’t do worse than Pat Sims which is a good thing. Plus, a big DT is more of what we need against the run.

DMAC will be the pick and he will have the Nation sporting his gear for years to come. You can never be loaded at the RB position in this league. RB by committe has been the philosophy for a lot of teams, and a healthy Mike Bush/Fargas/McFadden backfield would mean a potential homerun each time they line up as they would be fresh. Deadly.

  35. Tommy Trojan Says:

kiffin will be the HC, if someday he is fired, and RR is still on the payroll(and al is still alive), he will be the HC because the players respect him and he and mr. davis share a similar D philosophy, if i had my choice of any HC, it would be kiffin, and i would promote cable to OC or at least co-OC and/or ass.HC

  36. Tommy Trojan Says:

quagmire’d, it’s not neccesary for you to know that, i don’t ask those kind of questions i’d appreciate a common courtesy

  37. 1960AutumWind Says:

    Dear McFad supporters…

Please go blog on Dallas’ websites so they will be crazy enough to trade up with us and give us some picks to work with….

  38. Quagmire'd Says:

D-MAC can be the Nation’s Reggie Bush- only better…he can line up in the backfield or as a receiver.

  39. Dakota Says:

We have had too many assHCs in the past 18 years Trojan.

If RR is the HC, I may have to do myself in…

  40. Quagmire'd Says:

    My bad, Tommy…no disrespect.

  41. Quagmire'd Says:

was the girbil’s last name WILSON?

  42. Tommy Trojan Says:

we may agree that we’re not in favor of RR, but the players like and trust him, and that’s what matters

  43. They Call Me Assassin Says:

I don’t know how to read into the Kiffin situation. Something tells me that Kiffin enjoys being coy. He did so with the QB rotation as he felt it was an advantage, perhaps he’s doing the same with his coaching status. The fact that we’ve signed so many key position needs, it seems to me that those guys wouldn’t come here unless they felt good about the coaching situation. I’m not naive, and I understand that Money Talks, but a guy like Javon would need to know his potential role in the offense prior to signing. Something tells me that Javon has met with Kiffin and is pleased with the offense.

The one thing that continues to cloud my judgement of the Kiffin situation is the interview with James Lofton. Why in the world would Lane be part of that interview if he was on the way out?

  44. Dakota Says:

Tommy, that is what they said about J. Bugle too…

  45. They Call Me Assassin Says:

Tommy - You’re really freaking me out with the RR scenario’s. I understand Al wanting a player’s coach as he’s a player’s owner. However, Al better be hiring coaches that are “respected” by the players and not so much “liked” by them. I know you are not promoting RR and this is not a direct attack on you, I’m just saying it would kill me to see us in another Bugel type situation. We need a coach that isn’t afraid to have players dislike him and create fear for playing time. I want player’s to be held accountable and RR doesn’t do that. If he did, Terdell would’ve kicked some butt after slumping for so long. For as good a motivator as RR appears to be, he sure didn’t do much for Terdell.

  46. They Call Me Assassin Says:

Hilarious Dakota! You also commented on the Bugle situation as I was writing. Great minds think alike.

Jerry: Most fans understand the figures associated with the entire deal are blown out of proportion by inflated salaries on the back end.
    ———————

I STRONGLY dispute this. Very few knowledgeable fans understand this. In fact, most reporters don’t understand it.

Perfect example is the contract the Patriots gave to Dante Stallworth last year. Just like the J.Walker is now being reported as a 6yr, $55m deal, last year it was reported everywhere that the patriots gave:

    6 year contract
    $35 million total value
    had $12 million in guarantees
would pay $19.6 over the first three years

In reality, he was paid $3.6m for one year and released.

The media doesn’t understand contracts, doesn’t understand signing bonuses, doesn’t understand guaranteed money.

So they say Stallworth was guaranteed $12m, but are too dumb to report that he’s only guaranteed that amount if he’s not cut by the team.

These contracts are all BS and the reporting on them is all BS because the writers haven’t seen the contracts and usually don’t understand how they work. It’s always a “source” who confirms the guaranteed money, that source almost always connected to the agent.

Players like these phantom deals because in enhances their reputation to get a 6 yr $55m contract. Agents like the deal because they use these big numbers to recruit more players to represent. Teams like these contracts because it looks like they are committed to winning.

But in truth, like Dante Stallworth, most of these 6 yr $33 mil contracts with $12mil guaranteed are nothing more than a 1 year, maybe 2 yr deal for roughly the market price of the player/position.

Thanks to Jerry for pointing this out. But read through the comments for the last two days, and it’s patenttly clear that “Most fans understand the figures associated with the entire deal are blown out of proportion by inflated salaries on the back end.”

  52. Even A Broken Clock is Right Twice a Day Says:

Ladies and gentleman may I introduce the man the myth…

  53. Scottish Raider Says:

    Thanks Dakota,

Greetings to the Nation. Having stood back and watched the FA madness over the weekend, my take on the Raiders’ business is:

Tommy Kelly: Yes, we needed him back, but unless Sapp was right about Kelly’s potential, we just over-committed by about $10m.

Gibril Wilson: We had to have a Safety with a physical edge and Wilson has the makings of a great addition. Yes, we have paid a premium, but the market for quality Safeties is very hot and this isn’t a dumb move.

Kwame Harris: Smart move. The guy was lost at the 49ers and in the wrong scheme. He needs to play and he needs to be a scheme that maximises his strengths. Tom Cable could turn Harris into a ProBowl OT. Very good move.

Javon Walker: If we get the injury prone, melancholic, distracted Walker, then this was a bad, bad move. If we get the 2004 Walker, then this will prove to be one of Al’s most inspirational signings. We absolutely had to get a No1 receiver who could get down field quick enough to maximise JR’s arm strength. Apart from a certain R.Moss, Walker was the best WR talent available. At the very least, this was a brave move, but with no Calvin Johnson-like talent in the draft, Al obviously felt the gamble had to be taken.

Brayton and Porter are no losses to us. They needed a change and we needed them gone. I was more surprised that we cut Sims, especially as we only save $200k in cap, but it is a vote of confidence in McQuistan, Henderson and Harris. I am worried about losing Cooper Carlisle - he was a quiet star last season - and I still think we will take Sam Baker (or similar) in the 2nd Round.

Overall, we are paying premium prices for players with question-marks. We don’t deserve all the ridiculous criticism by most of the so-called experts. We have the money, so we better spend it on the best talent available. The focus now must be on spotting the equivalent bargains of Griffith and Carlisle in the rest of this year’s FA. And there are still some good players out there - especially in Special Teams.

Onto the draft. We can assume the Longs are both gone and that Atlanta will take Matt Ryan - unless they gamble that Flacco will be around at the top of the 2nd. I can’t believe we will take McFadden, so the choice is between Dorsey, Ellis and Gholston. The lowest risk is Ellis. Dorsey could be the defensive leader we crave, but we must be wary of the injuries. Gholston is the rawest and has the highest bustability, however he could be an absolute star. On balance, Ellis is the smart pick and a DLine of Burgess, Ellis, Kelly and Richardson isn’t too bad.

And I am bored witless by the whole Kiffin saga!

  54. Even A Broken Clock is Right Twice a Day Says:

    Buddy Ryan!

Lets give him a big round of applause shall we?

  55. BadMoodGuy Says:

Chris Clemons, in a Sirius radio interview, said Oakland was actively trying to sign him, but for not as much money or years as he got from Philly. He had nothing but good things to say about the Raiders organization even while being baited. Good luck to him, he took his opportunity and ran with it. Guaranteed, if the Raiders signed him for what Philly did, the Raiders would be considered to be out of control.

Willie Brown at the signing? Must mean Ryan has already been ‘let go’. Is Willie Brown wearing official Raider’s logo clothing? Must mean Willie Brown is going to be ‘let go’. I need the fashion angle.

Thanks to the mods for kicking off the last troll. The last blog thread was thankfully laden with football info.

  56. Sean Salisbury Says:

I don’t think even Al Davis is stupid enough to hire King Mullet as next Head Coach. That is a debacle waiting to happen.

We’d be better off with Callahan than Ryan.

  57. Just Win Baby Says:

Can’t imagine Dominic Rhodes is too thrilled at the prospect of us taking McFadden in the draft. Figure Fargas, Michael Bush and Mcfadden on the roster who will be the odd man out? Rhoades will be a dangling trade bait for after tha draft fo sho.

  58. Chris in NY Says:

He raised his eyebrows and said, “it’s worked out well for me”. I shook his hand and said I look forward to us whooping him silly for the next decade and walked away.

Overshadowed in Carolina, this is what the respected pro football prospectus (Football Outsiders) said about him a year ago:

“A long, lean receiver with deep speed and great jumping ability. Carter missed his rookie season and half of 2005 with an ACL tear. He made an immediate impact after he was activated in Week 15, catching a 40-yard pass against the Saints, a 32-yard pass against the Cowboys, a 28-yard pass in the playoffs against the Bears, and a 47-yard touchdown in the NFC championship. The Panthers have a crowd a receiver, but Dan Henning uses some five-wideout sets, and Caarter will have the role of deep threat in the slot.”

Of the 15 passes thrown to him, 21% were deep and 57% were bombs.

This is last year’s report from same source:

“Carter started in place of injured Steve Smith in September and tried to assume Smith’s role in the offense catching deep bombs and quick catch and go routes. Carter displayed the wheels and moves that served him well in the final games of the 2005 season, but also demonstrated a frustrating habit of battling the ball instead of catching it. He’s a certified deep threat who can help a team as a slot receiver.”

  74. Scottish Raider Says:

KC still haven’t re-signed Samie Parker. I would like us to take another WR, just so we can focus the draft on taking linemen. Drew Carter would fit well with Javon and Curry, but Samie could be even better.

And how about Joey Harrington as JR’s back-up. Better than David Carr!

  75. Jeremy Says:

Alameda Insider is not KoolKell. KoolKell has forgotten more about football than Alameda Insider will ever know!

    Learn about it!

  76. jerseyraider Says:

we already signed walker who is offten injured i dont think signing the alway injured drew carter is a wise move

  77. jerseyraider Says:

carter has been hurt since college and every year he was in the nfl

  78. Just Win Baby Says:

I think Jason Campbell from the Redskins could be an adequate backup QB if we could get him.

  79. jerseyraider Says:

    he has bad anckels

  80. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

As much as I’d like to call Alameda Insider an Idiot, I think he is right.

Lane Kiffin will be out of Oakland by March 31.

All signs seem to be pointing that way. The guy is nowhere to be found.

  81. jerseyraider Says:

campbell starts there what make you think we could get him? what would we be giving up?

  82. Shawnraiders81 Says:

Why would players sign here if the coaching situation is as bad as everyone says.

Yes I know players want money…… But they also want to win.

  83. Dakota Says:

    JWB,

What??? He is the Redskins’ starting QB.

  84. jerseyraider Says:

plus have two young qbs is risky what if neither can play? we need to add a proven vet

  85. Just Win Baby Says:

Yeah, I remember KK saying that all we need to put this franchise back on the map is for Al Davis to die and to isntall field turf. He was a genius.

  86. DoeDoe Says:

Lane Kiffen wasn’t in the picture with Jamarcus Russel when he signed his contract last year…And all the speculation about Lofton being brought in to be are next coach, don’t you think he would be in the picture with JJ Walkers sign in..

  87. jerseyraider Says:

    bring back jeff george

  88. Gary Says:

Tommy… just to be clear of your post(s)… you are stating you have inside information that Kiffin will be coach next year, but if he were to be fired, Rob Ryan would be coach?

  89. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

DO YOU BELIEVE LANE KIFFIN WILL BE THE HEAD COACH OF THE OAKLAND RAIDERS IN SEPTEMBER?

    - YES
    - NO

  90. Just Win Baby Says:

Todd Collins will be starting for the skins i think. Wasn’t is Washington he just signed with? I don’t see Campbell hanging on to the job.

  91. jerseyraider Says:

i would like him to but no

  92. Quagmire'd Says:

Campbell is the starter, Collins the back-up.

  93. jerseyraider Says:

campbell can play. he should be able to beat out collins

  94. Gary Says:

Oh, I just looked again… you stated you DONT have inside information but you think Kiffin will be the coach?

  95. Tommy Trojan Says:

no, that is what i like to call reasonable speculation

  96. Scottish Raider Says:

I must admit to being somewhat disappointed in Kiffin’s long silence. The Nation gave him a lot of powerful backing in January when all this nonsense started - he might have recognised that support by at least communicating with us. This eternal sulk is not helping anybody and the ‘I wasn’t dancing’ comment was just ridiculous.

Come on, Lane. We know Al is Mr Dysfunctional. But you don’t have to sink to his level. Give Jerry a call - we know you have the number - and do us the courtesy of putting the record straight.

  97. Dakota Says:

My sources tell me that the last time Kiffin was seen publicly he was wearing a Men Without hats T-shirt and singing:

I can dance if I want to
I can leave my wife behind
‘Cause my wife don’t dance and if she don’t dance
Well she’s no wife of mine
I say to Al Davis, I can go where I want to
A place where they will never find
And I can act like I come from out of this world
    Leave Oakland far behind
And I can dance, and I can dance!

  99. Tommy Trojan Says:

campbell was a 1st rnd pick, is their franchise QB and is a future pro bowler, he just happened to be injured the 2nd 1/2 of last year, i would gladly take him though, but to compete with russell for the job, not back him up

  100. jerseyraider Says:

    dork

  101. darkknight01 Says:

we all should be aware that most these contracts were backloaded….no big deal….

  102. jerseyraider Says:

he was a second round pick

  103. jerseyraider Says:

maybe even third now that i think about it

  104. Alameda Insider Says:

Yes Jersey,..I did in fact say no good free agents would even visit Alameda, much less sign them,..and I came in here more then once aknowledging that I got that wrong,..so be it…but Im right about Kiffin.

  105. darkknight01 Says:

Harrington released….more evidence that Ryan maybe the pick for Atlanta.

  106. Jeremy Says:

    JWB -

You shouldn’t let shit fall out of your mouth like that, at least wipe your chin. That is such a bold faced lie about KoolKell, I can only come to one possible conclusion. KoolKell schooled your ass and you are still bitter about it. Now that’s funny! He hasn’t been around for months yet you still are feeling the burn. LMAO!

  107. Tommy Trojan Says:

no, he was a 1st, he was taken out if auburn the same year as brown and cadillac

  108. 2sense Says:

thats cuz kiffin’s done. its one thing to avoid rumors. its another to fall off the map!!

if he’s gonna have no credibility and no say in the organization then Al better have the cajones to can him because it would be a wasted year under a lame duck puppet for a head coach.

i hope for the teams sake this is NOTHING as it seems.

  109. RaiderDogg Says:

I heard Kiffin didn’t do the Safety Dance until we signed Gibril Wilson.

Where do you get your info from Dakota?

  110. Tommy Trojan Says:

he was 25th overall to be exact in the 2005 draft

  111. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

As long as it’s not Rob Ryan as next HC.

The inmates would surely be running the asylum if he is.

  112. jerseyraider Says:

sorry tommy thought he went later

  113. NC Raider Says:

Can’t see getting Jason Campbell as QB backup. He was hand picked by Joe Gibbs (gave up multiple draft picks to move up and get him), and even in the (second) post-Gibbs era, Campbell is clearly seen as their franchise QB, with Todd Collins as their reliable vet backup.

So who do the Raiders get to play that role? Scottish suggested Harrington, and that might be a good move. Carr? Brunell?

Jerry: do you know what the Cooper Carlisle situation is?

  114. jerseyraider Says:

just read that my self sorry about that tommy

  115. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

“its one thing to avoid rumors. its another to fall off the map!! ”

Exactly! Kiffin seems to be in the Witness Protection Program.

  116. jerseyraider Says:

if kiff is out do you think he will land back in the nfl as an oc or back to college?

  117. jerseyraider Says:

he cleary showed some talent as much as last years team would allow

  118. raiderwill1980 Says:

Hey, if walker is healthy and curry also, JR will be fine, 2 big ifs, but after missing out on berrian and finally realizing porter just wasn’t going to use what rice and brown taught him here, i’m glad we signed the best fa wr out there. without that pickup, and if we didn’t trade down on top of it, it wouldn’t be pretty for JR, so glad we got walker, love the gibril wilson pickup, and HOPE kelly can justify his contract on the field

  119. Dakota Says:

  120. Alameda Insider Says:

Oh ya Just win baby?…how about either Al or Kiffin man up and tell the f*ckin truth?…is that so hard?…playin games with the media and the fans, you think thats the way to be?…if its all BS then all they would have to do is take 1 minute out of their day to squash it,..seeing how Kiffin is in hiding and Al isnt willing to say its all media crap, its clear their really is major probs there, whether you want ot believe it or not,..hey if you want to deal with it with your head buried in the sand thats your bag.

  121. rich_gannon_for_president Says:

the chance to get an elite, “active” DT is something the raiders CAN NOT pass up.we already have a speed rusher capable of 10-12 sacks per. add a young DT to play along side kelly (who, by the way, can also play DE!!!) and you have a lot of QBs with filthy uniforms next season. as i recall, richardson isn’t a passover either.

point here is, DON”T DRAFT DARREN MCFADDEN!!!! justin fargas rushed for a 1000 yards last year under cable’s OL blueprint. we don’t need to overpay top 4 RB when we have already have two(probably 3) guys more than capable. need another RB??? that’s what the 4th round is for.

the new york football giants proved to everyone what an elite defensive line can do to a “supposed” offensive jugernaut. a good d-line makes the secondary better, and visa versa. with addition of wilson and huff moving to FS, we have a chance to make our defense, well, a defense.

  122. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

I would say Kiffin would land somewhere on an AFC West coaching staff. Just a guess.

He will be as bitter as ShanaRat if these rumors are true,,and will make Al suffer.

  123. Alameda Insider Says:

Jersey, as I said last night,…Kiffin will land on the staff of an afc west rival,…O staff, then OC,..then head coach….probably in 5 years or so they will be talking about the record Kiffin has on Oakland, the way they talk about it now with Shanahan.

  124. jerseyraider Says:

  128. jerseyraider Says:

i dont think you need inside info to see it is very unlikely kiffin will be back next year

  129. jerseyraider Says:

i live in new jersey the only info i get is this blog and i can see the writing on the wall

  130. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

It would seem fitting for Lane Kiffin to land on the Denver Broncos offensive staff.

  131. jerseyraider Says:

how does he know if your bald or not?

  132. Just Win Baby Says:

How stupid do you think people are to actually believe that you, from your mother’s basement, not only know that Kiffin will be gone by July, but also know what division and in what capactiy he will be re-hired? You are the biggest loser on the face of the planet. Go outside and interact with a human. You need to quit listening to the voices and start taking your meds again. What a joke you are.

  134. snake Says:

nice story bout the rat assasin…..hate the guy myself, love the way you left him…..in my opinion hes done in denver if they fall any further this year, which along with a raider team on the rise, is good stuff

  135. This Just In... Says:

I just heard this from a very reliable source. Lane Kiffin will be relieved of his duties very soon if he continues to balk at resigning fom his head coach position. Here’s the new info: Lane Kiffin will then join the staff of the Miami Dolphins as the Offensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach.

This is not a lie people, this is very real. Parcells seems to be pretty high on Kiffin. It’s also one of the reasons that Al Davis is balking on firing him. He knows all about the Dolphins intent and Al has no plans on paying Kiffin while he works for the Dolphins.

  136. Rayden Says:

Something tells me that Lane Kiffin is gone. F**k AL Davis, that old rotten bastard. It doesnt matter how many great players we sign up for this team….if we don’t have a STABLE coaching in place, we are screwed, all thanks to that OLD BASTARD AL DAVIS!

I swear, if that man dies, I won’t give a rats ass~! F**K YOU AL DAVIS!!!

  137. jerseyraider Says:

wow that was harsh. isnt the man entitled to an opinion

  138. snake Says:

I heard minutes ago that al davis named kiffin as the next gm/owner of the raiders….he wanted another rumor he was bored with the old one.

  139. snake Says:

  140. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

Al Davis is responsible for this mess.

If Kiffin is gone, it will be another long & painful season. James Lofton?? WTF?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  141. bank-bank Says:

Please Great Raider Fans of America,do not listen to this Hogwash about Coach Kiffin. He isn’t going anywhere any time soon. There’s to much at steak to bring in a new coach especially with all of these new signings. This is a business.Your going to spend money on these new free agents and then fire a coach and hire a new coach, what kind of stability is that if your business is turning your franchise around. What are the new free agents going to think.Al doesn’t want that because he’s trying to win and win now.

  142. ChargersChoke Says:

If Al knows Kiffin was gonna do a Bobby Petrino and embarrass the organization then I guess he should be in Al’s doghouse, instead of firing him and paying him 2mill just limit his duties and make running things his way very frustrating which seems to be what’s happening.

  143. Rob Ryan's Pickled Liver Says:

    We should start:

  147. Raider Raul Says:

It seems Big Al and Kiffin are just keeing their noses to the grindstone and are diligently working away. Al is the GM, and Kiffin is the Coach. It’s the press (including YOU, Jerry) who keeps complaining that either things are too screwy or too quiet in Raiderland. Who cares if the coach comments on signings or not?? Nothing is proven unless it’s on the field!! Harris is not a guaranteed starter, and Walker is getting over an injury.

  148. DoeDoe Says:

Kiffen built the entire team around the defense that was suppose to be in the top 5 last year with all 11 starters returned.. The fact the defense underachieved by getting ran on all day wasn’t kiffins fault.. He built a running attack offense that every single coach has promissed since Jon Gruden..All Coaches failed until Kiffin came in..If we would have had an average run defense we possibly could have been a wild card team…And thats coming from a 2-14 season..So all the Kiffin Haters out there quit hatin on him..And plus Kiffin did a good job in the draft last year - we got our franchise QB (JMAK) a dope a$$ tight end (Zach Miller) that had more catches than Tim Brown when Timy Brown was a rookie a sick ass full back (Oren O Niel) a cb we haven’t seen yet but has amazing speed a de JRIch that held his own for being a rookie and starting..And I almost forgot the steal of the entire draft Michael Bush…Imagine what happens if we have another great draft as we did last year… KIFFIN IS STAYIN AS MUCH AS I LOVE TO SAY IT!

  152. Oakglenn Says:

Well you guys what did I tell ya? Walker and Kwame Harris are stop gap measures for the next year. It’s perfect. We focus on defense with the first two pix in the draft, we should have an 8-8 record which would put us in the middle of the ‘09 draft where Mike Crabtree or Heyward-Bey might be available to really stock our WR corp. Then on to the playoffs and make a run at the Super Bowl.

Btw, I can tell you exactly where Kiffin is for anyone who wants to know. In Alameda watching tape of potential draft selections. It’s Something he loves to do, and he is on board.

    Hey Dumbass -

The plan is for Kiffin to work for the Dolphins under what is referred to as a “consultant” contract, allowing him to work for the Dolphins for “free” while collecting a check from Big Al. Very similar to what went down with Mike Lombardi. I don’t expect you to understand, clearly this is complicated stuff for you. Maybe check out a NFL kid site so you can start from ground zero and learn a little something about football. Leave the complicated stuff to the adults that actually know a thing or two about NFL contracts.

You’re right payback IS a bitch isn’t it?

As for our WR talent…..It could be worse, look at the Titans WR Coprs, young is going to have to throw the ball to himself

It might be early for the 08 season but it looks to me as if Denver and Kansas will be fighting for the wooden spoon.

  193. Yalls Trippin Says:

Dogg - To clear up my earlier post re: nnamdi and Hall. Hall is demanding STOOPID bucks in any trade agreement that will likely go down soon. Raiders were interested but decided to move on. Nnamdi’s agent is waiting for all the transactions to go down for top CB’s untill the deal is reached. Hall is pretty much the last one in that category…There’s no rush, as the exclusive tag pretty much takes him off the open market. But I heard a couple of days is possible..

The Raiders no longer have interest in The Freak.

NY Daily news reports: League insiders, observing the Jets’ plan of attack in free agency, say it’s looking more and more like the team is plotting to pick RB Darren McFadden - if he’s available with the sixth overall choice.

The Jets have absolutely stacked their o-line and it’s clear they want McFadden

here is the smartest, most realistic scenario. Etch all of this in stone:

    1. Miami - C.Long
    2. Stl - J.Long
    3. Atl - M.Ryan
    4. Oak trade back two spots for the jets’ early 3rd, or perhaps add some value to get their 2nd.
    4. NYJ - D.McFadden
    5. KC - R.Clady
    6. Oak - V.Gholston

2nd rd, pick up LT, DT, or WR, depending on BPA who falls

3rd - LT, DT, or WR, BPA at position not selected w/ 2nd

Forget the DTs in rd 1. Dorsey lost his elite status because the injury reports (couldn’t hide it forever, just like A.Branch). Ellis never was or will be elite. Plus Raiders have made their decision to go with Kelly, Warren, Sands at DT. We need a DE badly though (Gholston)

However, if Al is set on McFadden, there won’t be a trade, we take McFadden at 4, then take BPA at LT, DT, or WR in rd 2. Al always finds a way to pick up a 3rd with a trade.

Someone’s got to hold it down around here. You know me I usually kick back and take it all in, but then someone mentioned KoolKell’s name out of the blue! WTF? Some people need to be reminded. It’s funny how the big guy hasn’t been around in months and people are still hurting from his owning of them.

    You seen Mosh Pit lately?

  198. jaysohn Says:

Wow that much venom for Al Davis.. chill out. Its only football, the man has never done anything personal to you. No wonder fan is short for fanatic, I love my Raiders too but at the end of the day its really not that serious. Win or lose it doesn’t change my plight in life. I’m glad that Jerry finally wrote something contsructive about the Raiders. I know as a sportswriter he is suppose to be unbiased and all that but really why do we have local writers who don’t even like the team they are writing about? More often than not the tone of the local press is so negative in regards to the Raiders while the equally inept Niners seem to always get some measure of at least hopefulness. Al went out and did what he had to do, if that meant over paying for talent to come to Oakland then so be it. As far as Kiffin is concerned I wouldnt be shocked or suprised at him being fired or being on the sidelines in Napa. The reality is no one knows whats going on for sure beyond Al and Lane. We’re gonna have to just wait and see. As far as the draft is concerned winning teams start with line play on both of sides of the ball and I would continue to work on getting as much talent as possibe there.

Mosh Pit is probably in police custody awaiting trial for excessive force or something. lol

  204. Raider Raul Says:

    Thanks, DD.

I am a little surprised we didn’t do a press conference for Gibril Wilson, especially cuz he’s wearing some fresh bling from the SB. Big Al probably didn’t want the press making Larry Brown or Desmond Howard references.
So far, I’m relatively pleased with the progress of this offseason. Not only for who we’ve retained and brought in, but also for who we’ve shown the door.

    Just IN: Wilson, Walker, Harris
    Sticking Around: Fargas, Kelly
Good Riddance: McClown, Brayton, Sims, Porter, Sapp
On their way OUT: Jordan, Schweigert

Who is Kool Kell? and who cares? We are here to talk about football, the Raiders and midgets who crap themselves and masturbate while typing at their computer. Ahhhhhhh. Ewwwwww!

  206. Tommy Trojan Says:

you know, for the sake of argument, why don’t we discern everyone’s opinions of the talent on our roster, player by player, being realistic about it, let’s say we use a madden scale(i.e. nnamdi=98, gallery=86 walter=75 miller=86 r.brown=64 etc etc) for simplicity’s sake, keep it within the realm of reality

  207. Jeremy Says:

Mosh Pit is a bit high strung. He would eat most of these people for breakfast! He reminds me of Mongo from the movie Blazing Saddles, but don’t tell him I said that. Jesus that’s all I need is that big m-fer sitting on me or something!

  208. raiderwill1980 Says:

good idea tommy t. healthy walker=95, jruss=86, burgess=92, gibril=88, the rest barely crack the 80’s imo

  209. eyepatch Says:

  212. Yalls Trippin Says:

Mongo just pawn in game of life…haha..good stuff

  213. Tommy Trojan Says:

95+=one of best in NFL, 90+=pro bowl quality player, 85+=good starter, 80+=starter caliber, 75+=quality reserve/starter potential, 70+=decent reserve 60+=reserve/nothing more, below 60=ST only, 50 or lower=shouldn’t be in NFL

  214. raiderwill1980 Says:

LOL nooooo dakota, gallery was solid last year. fargas is probably an 82 also. i’d give jlh a 65 right now

  215. Tommy Trojan Says:

    Raiders/Al Davis 67

  224. Joey Bee 1 Says:

Miller is not enough he’s only an 84

  225. Raider Raul Says:

Looks like the Raiders are gearing up to draft either Ryan Clady or Vernon Gholston, assuming that we trade down and pick up more picks.
Can we squeeze DeSean Jackson in there somewhere??

  226. Tommy Trojan Says:

fabian is going to look rattled when 72% of all pass attempts go to his side of the field
