Shortage of picks
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 at 2:28 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Assuming DeAngelo Hall arrived in Oakland Wednesday and all goes according to plan, the Raiders will reportedly lose their second and sixth-round picks in this year’s draft to the Atlanta Falcons.
Given that the Raiders lost their third-round pick to New England as part of the deal that allowed them to draft Mario Henderson, and gave the Broncos a fifth-round selection for defensive tackle Gerard Warren, it leaves Oakland with four selections.
Oakland drafts in the first round (No. 4 overall), fourth round and has two picks in the seventh round.
The Raiders have never had less than six draft picks in any season since 1993, when the draft went to eight rounds. It became a seven-round draft in 1994. Always active in terms of trades on draft day, it’s safe to assume Oakland will look at ways to increase the size of their draft class.
The most obvious way would be to deal the first-round pick for additional picks, giving them a later pick in the first round. According to a chart which many NFL teams use to determine the value of selections, a that No. 4 pick could easily add a few additional selections.
According to the chart, the No. 4 overall pick is worth 1,800 points. Dallas has been rumored to be interested in the No. 4 pick, and has picks at No. 22 and No. 28. Since the No. 22 pick is worth 780 and the No. 28 selection is worth 660 _ the Cowboys would in theory need another 360 points to make up the difference _ the equivalent of the No. 54 overall selection.
Would the Raiders give up No. 4 to get No. 22, No. 28 and No. 54?
By point of comparison, last season’s No. 4 pick was Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams by Tampa Bay. No. 22 was quarterback Brady Quinn (Cleveland, Notre Dame), No. 28 was tackle Joe Staley (49ers, Central Michigan) and No. 54 was defensive end Turk McBride (Kansas City, Tennessee).
In 2006, the No. 4 pick was tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson (New York Jets, Virginia). The 49ers selected linebacker Manny Lawson (North Carolina State) at No. 22, tight end Marcedes Lewis (Jacksonville, UCLA) was No. 28 and defensive back Bernard Pollard (Kansas City, Purdue) was No. 54.
If the Raiders wanted to get just a single mid- to late-round pick in the first round in exchange for No. 4, they would probably be in line for at least three more picks in the second, third and fourth rounds.
While the trade chart is not a Bible, by any means _ the Raiders probably have their own formula _ it is clear the Raiders can increase their numbers if they haven’t zeroed in on an instant contributor at No. 4.
Oakland can also add picks by dealing players under contract. Among the likely candidates:
– CBs Fabian Washington and Stanford Routt: Hall’s arrival means one or both will be dangled for a draft pick. Washington was a first-round pick who lost his job to Routt (a second-round pick) last season.
Routt’s size makes him a more likely prospect as a nickel corner to remain, even though he’s never been completely comfortable playing inside.
– RB LaMont Jordan: This one is probably wishful thinking by the Raiders. Jordan is due to make $4.7 million this year and $5 million next season. Teams know Jordan isn’t in Oakland’s plans, and will likely wait for him to be cut so they can work out a deal for less money.
– C Jake Grove: A lot of teams loved Grove when he came out in 2004, regarding him as the country’s top center. The only way this would be possible is if Jeremy Newberry or another veteran center was signed as the starter, with Chris Morris remaining as a backup.
– QB Andrew Walter: If the Raiders sign Quinn Gray or another veteran to back up JaMarcus Russell, Walter could be given a fresh start.
– S Michael Huff: The Raiders were floating his name at the NFL scouting combine for a possible trade, although it seems more likely with the acquisition of Gibril Wilson that Huff will move to free safety.
– S Stuart Schweigert and Hiram Eugene: The whipping boy of Raider nation had his problems tackling in the secondary, at least in part because too many opposing players were given a head start by the front seven. But he is scheduled to be paid as a starter and that isn’t happening unless a huge offer comes across for Huff. Eugene may not have shown enough to merit receiving a draft pick.
– FB Justin Griffith: Hailed as a “locker room” savior by Kiffin last season, the Raiders this offseason don’t appear overly concerned about positive and negative influences. Griffith is at present keeping the seat warm for Oren O’Neal. If the Raiders are convinced O’Neal can start right away, Griffith could bring a mid- to late-round pick.
– G-T Paul McQuistan: Played OK at right tackle as the replacement for the injured Cornell Green. The fact that Green was brought back on a two-year deal could mean the coaching staff doesn’t think McQuistan is a fit for the zone blocking system. As a guard, he won’t be replacing either Robert Gallery or Cooper Carlisle.
– DT Gerard Warren: Scheduled to make $4 million in salary, Warren arrived for a conditional pick last season which Denver now owns at No. 5. Probably isn’t going anywhere, but it seems that every team that gets Warren is soon looking to unload him.

Jerry, Raiders didn’t “lose” draft pics. They traded them. New England “lost” their original 1st round draft pic…
March 19th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
What Jerry didn’t mention is the ability to trade NEXT YEAR’s draft picks to get back into THIS YEAR’s draft. The draft class next year isn’t nearly as deep as this year. Let’s just mortgage next years picks for 3 or 4 picks in the first 5 rounds of this year. We wouldn’t lose ground as this year’s picks will be young and have more time to build together, plus this draft has what we need (OL, DT, DE, MLB, WR).
March 19th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
also, you might as throw that chart out the window because it doesn’t apply as much today. trading up and giving away a lot of picks are not going to happen in today’s game until goodell fixes rookie salaries by placing a cap on them much like the nba.

Thanks for the response, my thoughts are if the Qb is going to be the backup,(whoever) then he should have the same dynamics as JaMarcus.
Strong arm, able to roll-out and provide leadership.
I bet it was tough for Kiffin last year to have different offenses for McCown, and Culpepper.
They may have looked the same, but different routes and game planning was real different.
Two completely different QB’S, some plays just won’t work for either one.
I believe the offense should beat like a drum no matter who is in at the time.
Final thought, we need a backup for Jamarcusn not to teach him how to read defenses or strategy, that’s the coaches job. The backup should help Jamarcus with game week preparation and how to be a professional.
Work habits, film study, and just overall confidence.
March 19th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Raiders definitely dont trade 4 if McFadden is there.
Why? Read the raiders.com bio on Kwame Harris:
“The 6-7, 325-pounder’s blocking helped Frank Gore lead the NFL in rushing with a 49er record 1,695 yards in 2006. Harris also played a key role in allowing Gore to rush for a single-game franchise record 212 yards in 2006.”
Thats why they stay at 4 if Run DMC is there.
Much as I wish otherwise.
March 19th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Actually the guy I’ve been putting on the block, other than Fabian is Andrew Walter. Funny how I would have thought throwing Walter into the D. Hall deal would have made sense in some respect. Even tho that would leave us with only one QB on the roster going into training camp, we could find veteran help and possibly draft a 3rd QB later.

Nice post. I agree with everything that you said. I must say it is very refreshing to read posts from guys such as yourself. You obviously know what you are talking about and I can appreciate that, especially considering the majority of posts on this blog.
As a 3rd QB I say go with Oakglenn’s guy Josh Johnson in the later rounds and groom him…

My bad…Already posted on previous blog…

Sorry Dakota, I guess it wasn’t as cool as your picture of the guy from the XFL saying it was JaMarcus looking good.

finally someone that gets it…we have a great opportunity to hock next years picks to get us a bunch of trench help this year…that should stay with us for a decade !!!
Next years picsk will be less valuable since we will hopefully win 10 games this year.

trade Andrew Walter if you can get any value what so ever for him…
March 19th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Tom Flores,
I appreciate the kind words. My thought process was based on us wanted to win now but win with young talent. What better way to do that than to accumulate the young talent all at once and get ahead of the “chemistry” curve by having everyone in camp at the same time/same year. I just hope we have the cash to do so.
March 19th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
That “first” thing is so moronic by the way. How old are you people?

I don’t think the Raiders are going to trade away the farm for picks this year.
Washington, Walter, and Stu maybe. I doubt anyone else on that list gets traded.

QB…or not QB is that the question here???
hmmm..Oakglenn wants to trade Walter…without a back up in place…risky…Daunte should have been the starting QB in Chicago…he sucks as his own agent…that is why he has not signed anywhere…a poor self promoter…
He should just come back to Oakland…where Hall can teach him all about self-promotion…hahaha
March 19th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Morons that think Grady Jackson is not a free agent need to go to the short-bus blog over at the Denver Post.

March 19th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Again given our draft history, except for the LB picks, we are better off trading our picks for proven players or to fill out our roster. I am pretty much happy about the last couple of years. I
I would have liked to see us trade down last year and draft Peterson and get a solid QB and Oline help with the extra picks.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Sorry loser newbie, keep trying.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
this is awsome now all we need is a pass rush some pass protection
March 19th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Sorry Nation, back to the Raiders.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
well…there are plenty of retired QBs like Jake Plummer, and Dilfer…ready to play…ops…sorry..well almost retired…McNair, JP Losman actually would be right up Kiffins alley…a bit of a scrappy guy…a scrambler…can throw it fairly accurately…has experience…likes being shown up by Rookies….yeah…he oughta be just right.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

March 19th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Trading next years picks is a bad idea. Ask Washington how that turns out.
We can’t fix everything this year.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Bring back Brooks. He’s out of a job.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I’d rather bring back Vince Evans or Jay Schroeder than Aaron!
March 19th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Jerry
thank you for giving us the list of potential trade bait..to occupy our time while we wait to hear what goes on behind the black curtain in Alameda…
You are defintely listening…any other possible issues we should be aware of…??? rumor is that Hall wanted to meet with Kiffin, Al Davis and ….find out if he will be the HC this year…before putting his blood on the contract.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
I’m confused … why does everyone think we need more draft picks. I would rather trade draft picks for a pro-bowl anytime. How many draft picks did the Raiders cut last year … infact how many #1 picks in the last five years are pro-bowlers? I’m not saying to do this every year but once in awhile try it especially if you have been drafting bad lately.

I was under the impression that the Jags re-signed Grady. He is still on their active roster. If I am wrong I have no problem admitting it. No skin off my back, I make mistakes sometimes.
What if you are wrong? Will you pull a LMN or will you be man enough to admit that you made a mistake?
March 19th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
How old is Evans? He has to be 50, right?
I bet he can still play better than Brooks.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Jim Lachey for Jay Schroeder….yikes that was bad Al.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Dakota
yes we can…why not???
it would also give our guys one more year of experience together…no one we need is coming out until ‘10…thats when the great receivers hit the draft market…we really need to stockpile Linemen in this draft…to get us through the next decade !!!
March 19th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Don’t worry Ray, stick around long enough and you will see that I man up to my mistakes.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Tom, regarding our QB situation around this time last year, it was the same. We only had Walter on the roster then signed McCown and drafted Jam. So kind of the same situation in my mind. “Ideally” Jam is going to take every snap next year so, sign a Brunnel, Leftwich, McNair, as a backup and draft as East Bay Ray says, Josh Johnson!!
March 19th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Fabian Washington - Trade for 3rd round selection
Stanford Routt - Keeping Nickleback
Lamont Jordan - Cut
Jake Grove - Keeping (almost beat out Newberry last year for the starting center role)
Andrew Walter - Keeping - 3rd string QB
Michael Huff - Keeping - I say starting SS - everyone else say FS
Stuart Schweigert - Special Teams
Hiram Eugene - Cut
Justin Griffith - Keeping - Oren O Neal and Justin Griffith 2 different styles - better to have both
Paul McQuistan - Keeping - good backup when Green got hurt also added depth
Gerard Warren - Keeping -
This the way I see it - Fabian will be the only player traded for a 3rd round selection and as for the 1rst round DMAC is Al’s man.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

March 19th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
there are at least 5 guys on our roster..that are free agents ..not under contract with the Raiders organization…
March 19th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
I personally wouldn’t want the raiders to trade next years first round draft pick for some extra picks this year. I think next year’s linebakers are really good, and we can use that pick on a solid middle linebacker like James Laurinatis, Rey Maualuga, or a guy who can play all three positions in Brian Cushing.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Maybe we can get Testaverde to unretire again.

Last year we got the Ball run down our throat, that has to be fixed with either players or scheme’s. I don’t know if that has been addressed or will be addressed. There is some great excitement about this team. I am concerned JR’s weight is 274, I mean he should be 250-259 and not a pound more. I hope he’s studying allot of game film.

That’s all well and good Tom but the thing is that the Jags site is updated. They even have Jimmy Kennedy on the active roster and he just signed on 3/5/08. So they add new players but don’t remove old ones? Doesn’t seem very likely.
But like I said before if I am wrong I can be a man and admit it. I just don’t think I am wrong about this.

I like the Leftwich pick…he still thinks he is a starter though..and probably would be if he wasnt so injury prone..poor guy…I remember you saying Jim Johnson as our 3rd guy but he has gotten alot of good press…I dont see him there in round 7..and we really need a LB in round 4…

we don’t need a back up QB, bush, curry, and mcfadden are all capable of playing the position if need be, and while they may not be as adept at throwing the ball as quinn gray or daunte culpepper or andrew walter, but any of them would open up the offense far more than a backup QB and could be dangerous option options, and they’d surprise alot of people as passers, i won’t say they would beat out gray or culpepper in a QB competition, i’m saying that one of them might win us more games if, budha forbid, russell were to go down, just an interesting idea, as all of them have experience playing the position

Grady Jackson only signed a two year contract with Jacksonville when they signed him… He is officially a free agent..has had preliminary talks with both the Bengals and Mike Smith..from the Falcons, who is interested in possibly bringing him back to ATL…
However, Jacksonville has lost Marcus Stroud and may make Grady Jackson an offer to stick around another year…
satisfied???

we don’t need a back up QB, bush, curry, and mcfadden are all capable of playing the position if need be, and while they may not be as adept at throwing the ball as quinn gray or daunte culpepper or andrew walter, but any of them would open up the offense far more than a backup QB and could be dangerous option options, and they’d surprise alot of people as passers, i won’t say they would beat out gray or culpepper in a QB competition, i’m saying that one of them might win us more games if, budha forbid, russell were to go down, just an interesting idea, as all of them have experience playing the position
that’s the kind of irrational thinking that’s prevailant in oakland right now. don’t give al any ideas.

Thanks for the info.

March 19th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
LMN, what the heck is wrong with pirates??? Don’t ever come in here bad mouthing pirates!!
Lefty, first off I want to apologize if you were around last nite having a conversation with “me”. I wasn’t there so if stupid stuff was said, please accept my apologizes for it. I agree with you regarding Leftwich generally, I’ve never been a big Byron fan, but I was throwing names like that around. Maybe Brunnel or McNair would be better.
Yeah Jeez Tom, I was talking up Josh Johnson and apparently he is SCREAMING up the charts. Some scouts think he could go THIRD ROUND to either SD or Chicago. Yikes!! Then my guy Duane Brown the LT from Va Tech who I like here is also now screaming up the charts. Criminy!! And of course I was a BIG Sedrick Ellis fan early so maybe I should just shut my big fat mouth!! (just kidding)
March 19th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Jerry refers to possibly re-signing Newberry, but I heard that he signed with the Bucs.
Also, who is this Josh Johnson? What school is he from? What type of QB?
March 19th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

March 19th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Turner,
The Bucs offered him a contract on the 16th. I don’t think he has signed it yet.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Norval-i believe he was offered a contract by TB but didn’t sign because he wants to stay in Oakland.

I think thatthe Jags will try a little harder to resign him now though..as John said they are really really weak now at DT and he is a big body that plugs holes…losing your 2 starting DTs has a strange effect on teams…
March 19th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Josh Johnson is from University of San Diego. Whatever it is, this kid has it!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely fantastic player. Walter Payton Award winner this year. Check him out. I would LOVE to have this guy!!!
Here is something that most of you probably don’t see coming so let me throw this out. DeAngelo Halls best friend on Atlanta is Mike Vick. It’s one of the reasons Hall is coming here. Now, there is a very good chance Vick will come here once he gets out. What sayest all y’all about that???
March 19th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Hey Lefty,
What do you think about the Raiders taking McFadden with the #4 pick?
March 19th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
rich, there are no FA QBs available who can have the impact that russell can have, and few who can have the impact one of the afformaentioned players can, if we miss out on gray and culpepper, then one of these guys would be interesting, walter isn’t able to be successful in our current offense, a dual threat(all of these guys are at least as good of passers as vick was; not in terms of arm strength but accuraccy), like one of these guys may be, but we’re talking about the hypothetical, nightmarish situation in which russell goes down, in which nothing will turn out good, so that would be an opportunity to roll the dice if nothing better presents itself
March 19th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Two trolls in disguise here are the Tampax Trojan and East Gay Ray. Ignore their posts , hopefully they’ll go away soon. What a couple of idiots , Grady Jackson not a free agent and WRs as backup QBs!!!!!
March 19th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
reminds me..I have to go pick up my 7 year old son from school..now…see ya later guys…
I hope Al gets Hall right where we want him..and at a price that doesnt blow up our locker room…
remember minutes after this deal goes down…Asomugha either signs long term or becomes infuriated and asks for a trade…
March 19th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Let me preface by saying I don’t ever want Vick in the S&B, but if he was hear, it could only be as a WR and KR.
Then you could work a reverse in there with JR being the lead blocker only to have Vick throw a bomb to Walker.
Still, don’t want to see it happen.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
hell yea-can’t wait to see him take the handoff, throw an option pass, and then make the rec.after he makes the catch,he runs past everyone for a 50 yd td.then he comes in to play DE,cuz burgess pulled his hammy and we don’t have any backups.
March 19th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
atually Mr Chokin’ Charger…
he is right..all those guys h elisted could be put in as emergency QBs..since they all played th eposition either in HS or College…thus allowing us to carry only two Qbs on our roster…at the start of this season…I think Stu actually played QB in HS too…
doubtful…but possible…
March 19th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

okay… you pointed out something I said myself?
I have noticed ONE post from you containing football talk, everything else has been directed towards me…
As I said, I talk about everything here, thats how you get to know the other fans, I know stuff about dakota, RaiderDell and others, they know stuff about me… thats how we establish interaction between the fans…
I can see you got a beef with ChargerChoke, he killed the impostor from SD, who talked about chokolate rain and stuff, so get of his back. You was after Dakota, for no reason. And you support DraftBeer, a guy who most regulars in here dislikes, and you support him for the reason that he dislikes me…
you’re one weird fella, I read these post for over a year before contributing myself, so I already knew who was the regulars and the visitors. Ease back and enjoy the talks here, in stead of being so busy with my post, just jump over mine =)
again to sum up, your only football talk was about Grady, which was wrong, thats okay though. But I at least talk some football =) besides the book-, music-, history-, philosophy- and political talks
I hope you’ll have a nice day

March 19th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Mr Flores,
The guy stated backup QB, not emergency QB, he was actually stating we go with one QB and use the WRs or others as backup. I am fully aware of some teams having 2 QBs and a kicker or other position player as a emergency QB but no team goes with just 1 QB and then a emergency QB.

You could learn a thing or two from my actions as well as Dakota’s. I know how to admit it when I’m wrong, I don’t rely on hurling insults and name calling like yourself. Some people would rather kick and scream or do whatever it takes to avoid admitting to making a mistake.
Whatever, ignorance is bliss. Enjoy it while you can because someone else, just like me, is going to prove you wrong just like I did. Hopefully one day you will learn what it takes to be a man. I won’t hold my breath.

After watching the offseason moves Al has made, I am optomistic as we have accquired talent, albeit with some injury history and risk involved. I personally don’t care who coaches the team as long as we put up at least 10 wins this year.
March 19th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
thanks Dakota-you know how to get me started.
March 19th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
a backup QB is an emergency QB, they only play in an emergency situation or if you don’t have a QB at all, which would constitute an emergency, any of the three would pose a bigger problem for offenses than any FA QB available, but gray or culpepper would still be a nice option to have, if they are willing to take reasonable salaries
March 19th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
With the 34th pick in the 2008 NFL draft…the Oakland Raiders select…DeAngelo Hall, cornerback, from Atlanta.
I’m for picking Gholston in the first round, although I think Al will pick McFadden.

March 19th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
As the Oakland Raiders and the Atlanta Falcons continue to work toward a deal that will send cornerback DeAngelo Hall to the Bay Area, ESPN.com’s Chris Mortensen reports that Hall’s contract will be worth $70 million over seven years.
Other details aren’t yet known — such as, for example, whether the final year is fueled by funny money aimed at driving the perceived average up to $10 million per year.
The contract signed in 2007 by cornerback Nate Clements widely was (and still is) reported as being worth $80 million over eight years. But as our pal Howard Balzer learned at the time, the final season has a $16 million salary . . . and it disappears completely before the final season even begins.
So Clements’ deal actually is for seven years, $64 million. If Hall’s deal is truly worth seven years and $70 million, he’ll be the first defensive back legitimately getting $10 million annually.
In other words we should have enough money 2 give aso an extension. I believe we have something in place because he has yet 2 sign his 1 year franchise tender. What yall think?
March 19th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Im good with gholston. 4 hte 20th time we dont need mcfarten.

March 19th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
the way Culpepper disappeared from the team after his so called injury last year,i don’t see how any Raider fan could want to see him return.if he couldn’t stick around to help JR last year what makes you think he will help him this year.the guy is not a team player.
March 19th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Since all the talk about this being the best Secondary we’ve had since Willie Brown and Atkinson and Tatum, or Lester Hayes/Mike Haynes/Van Mac Elroy I think we are forgetting about some other Great Defensive Back fields as the Time we Had Terry McDaniel, Lionel Washington, and Eddie Anderson. Especially McDaniel as I believe he was a Multiple Pro-Bowler, and Anderson was a stud against the Run. That Late 80’s Early 90’s teams should have won a Superbowl as they were STACKED with talent. Someone Mentioned earlier Schroeder for Lachey was a Horrible trade and I agree, as we already had Steve Buerlein. Lachey won a Superbowl and went to multiple Pro-bowls while Schroeder threw Interceptions in bunches, and as we found out Art Shell was a horrible coach.(Just happened to have Talent the first time he was here) Having Shanahan, Buerlien and Lachey as apposed to Schroeder, and Shell, and an inexplicably Benched Marcus Allen? No Choice at all in Retrospect

MCcown replaced Culpepper for the starting role since he was more mobile than Culpepper - I believe Kif made up the entire injury for Culpepper so it didn’t look like Culpepper lost his job to MCcown - Kif was being a nice guy to try and pro-long his career - But looks like it didn’t work and Culpepper may be back as a backup to JMak if Quinn decides to go to the packers - Thats my theory

That is sort of like propaganda, brain washing.
Do you believe that goes on in the NFL.
Peter (slimy) King spoke of this describing Bill Parcells during the 1986 draft in his MMQB column.
Never talk about who you really want, surprise them with the choice at the draft.
March 19th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
For those concerned about trading away a 2nd round pick for DeAngelo Hall, understand there is no guarentee that 2nd pick will be a success according to history.
2007 - Zach Miller - Looked great in his first year.
2006 - Thomas Howard - Great OLB for us.
2005 - Stanford Routt - Not good to keep the Raiders from trading for Hall.
2004 - Jake Grove - Couldn’t beat out Newberry.
2003 - Teyo Johnson - Not here.
2002 - Langston Walker & Doug Jolley - Both not here.
2001 - Marques Tuiasosopo - Out of a job.
2000 - Jerry Porter - Soon to be in Jaguars doghouse.
1999 - Tony Bryant - Not here.
1998 - Leon Bender - I believe he passed away.
Basically, getting a guy like DeAngelo Hall is a pretty good deal for a 2nd round pick.

Judging from Jerry’s breakdown of top picks traded down, maybe we should stand pat. In both cases the single guy was better than the two that got picked up.
We are a lock to get a top 4 DLineman, our greatest need. Hard to pass that up.
Resign Aso and trade Washington. Given Hall’s high 2nd & 6th value, Washington should be worth a high 3 or low 2nd.
March 19th, 2008 at 4:46 pm

I have to admit that its hard to accept Hall when we have our very own guy in Asomugha not getting a fair shake. I can only hope that they were waiting on Hall’s deal to find the exact parameters for Asomugha. The question is…do you pay Aso more or do you match the same contract? Heres the problem:
Hall is a 2 time Pro Bowler. Aso is not. However, Aso is considered one of the best corners in the NFL, while Hall is generally considered overrated. Aso has a great attitude while Hall does not. Aso is a drafted Raider, while Hall is not. What a contrast in 2 players right? I really think these guys can benefit from each other if they can get along and if they can both get paid equally.

As for Stu, just get rid of the guy. That sissy had the audacity to complain about fans berating him for getting ran over weekly, when in fact he should have been apologizing for failing to step-up. Stu is not an NFL caliber safety. Its time for him to sign up for the arena league.

Nnamdi Asomugha isn’t going anywhere. Raiders will lock him up long term NOW as it will be more CAP friendly than the Franchise Guaranty and Al has money To spend NOW as he just sold $150 Million of Raider Stock (non-voting of course) That’s where all this money Al is spending is comming from!
March 19th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
We do still need a 3rd TE though. You know the big beefy blocker dude? I think Miller and Madsen are super solid.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Dell,
You mean Marry Steed the Broncos’ fan from Natrona County Wyoming posing as a Raiders’ fan??? I think I freaked him out a little yesterday by guessing where he is from…he never denied it despite repeated opportunities to do so.

Raiderfan in NE
Stacy Toran was like Ed Reed, just as fast and a hard nosed tackler, never shied away from contact.
Not as tall as Reed, but had good ball instincts.
Stacy Toran and Leon Bender wil always be Raiders, as tragic as their deaths were.

JJWalker - Carter - Curry - Higgins

Lefty 12 - I have a pretty good idea of what you mean. I’ve been with my G/F for 7 years. I’m 25 and shes 22. High School sweethearts. We’ve definately had our share of arguements and everything else. Granted, that doesn’t equal 30 years but I’ve finished the 1st quarter of that game. Haha.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
I would like to see The Raiders get Dennis Dixon if he is around late or undrafted. I thought he was great before hurting his knee.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
I actually think that we are going to see a lot, and I do mean A LOT of 3 receiver sets. No FB, and Shotgun.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Huff,
Seven Years…Shite or get off the pot dude.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
The good thing about signing Hall is it sends a message to Asomugha that we are willing to pay the big money but we’re also going to give ourselves insurance in case Asomugha decides he wants to hold out for any reason. Now we’re covered in case Aso decides to hold out and that can only make him feel the pressure.

And Pirate I didn’t miss your post either. Just read it. It was sensless - just more inventive ways to justify picking McFadden. Face it. He’s the not the best option. Thats all I have to say.
——————-
glad I happened to see this.
Agree 100%, McFadden is not the best option, not even the second best option. Yet I’m surprised you can’t see or simply refuse to acknowledge that picking McFadden CAN be justified, IF the better options are not available.
So let’s clarify. We have the 4th pick in the draft (put aside hypothetical trades). If C.Long and V.Gholston are both gone by pick 4, what exactly is this super-fantastic option you have in mind?

Dakota - Hah. My lady and I have a good understanding of our situation and why we’re not married so I’m not trippin. We don’t have the money yet and we’re both working on our business to accomplish that. We’ve been in serious talks about just getting married and worrying about the actualy wedding at a later date. She also feels like shes ready to have kids because she doesn’t want to be too old as we want 4 kids and thats another money issue in itself. Anyways, sorry for the life story. We should all just get together and share life stories on a personal basis. We all need to have a party, then we’ll find out who the “real” trolls are because its going to be hard to duplicate yourself that many times haha.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Dakota…you need to know your Raider History Dude. Vann Mc Elroy was a stud Safety we had in the mid to Late 80’s He was the John Lynch of the 80’s (he’s one of the Raider Safety’s on Tecmo Bowl for crying out loud!)
RaiderDell knows what I’m talking about

i think Dorseys injury has been blown out of proportion slightly. He seems the most aggressive and passionate players in the running for the no. 4 pick so i’d h8 the risk and go for him. Even though i will be gutted when McFadden goes for a 1 thousand yard season. the next season i wouldnt mind so much when he hits the cells though
March 19th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
one last thing-go to Vegas Huff-no big weddings-too stressful.

NE,
If draft McFadden, 3 rec sets will take that safety out of the box.
Watch out!
March 19th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Oaktown Buddha - Kiffin said that Curry would be more involved this next season and since he was already here, its hard to believe that Curry will be supplanted by Carter at this point in time. I would expect Walker and Curry to start with Carter as our #3. Now, its possible that Curry will play the slot on our 3 WR sets to allow Carter to use his speed on the outside. We shall see.

i think the rams are going to draft dorsey,if miami doesnt

Alameda Insider AKA Madden Raider ?
you are hard on prople bro…I have confessed numerous times to being wacky and dumb at times…
I use this name because he reminds me of great days watching football with my old man…and the beginning of my womanizing days…now over…the glory days of my youth…and the bitter winter of my discontent…
Flores is a Raider for life…not some fickle fan…like many I have met…some say
“bury my heart at wounded knee”…I say, “Spread my ashes over the Black Hole…”…
so..sorry if I disturb you with my bizzare statements or behavior…thats just me…you can skip when you see my name if you like…
but I will go on…saying ridiculous things until I die…because I am a ridiculous guy.

I reckon Carter has some hidden talent given the chance. Well hope he does

March 19th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
I agree with post #196. Dixon should be around late and we shouldn’t need him but would be a good back up later on.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
JHill - Tony Stewart and Fred Wakefield are GREAT #3’s if you know what I mean. I really think we have the perfect compliments for the backup TE spot and they are more natural at the position unlike Madsen, who is more build like a WR.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
With the additions of JJWalker/Drew Carter - My crystal ball tells me we will be 1rst or 2nd this year in rushing yards as a team - we were 6th last year with 8 men in the box on every play - JJWalker/Drew Carter/Curry/Miller/Dmac will spread the opposings team D - Finally we will have a ONfense that has been hurtful to watch the last handful of years

Let me be the first to congratulate you, now about those many kids.
Let’s talk, later.
Hold on to the wallet. Age is not the sign of getting old, it’s the number of kids you have.
