Would Raiders pick a WR in Rd. 1?

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, April 7th, 2008 at 2:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Let’s assume for a moment the Raiders, with only five selections in this year’s draft, will consider trading the No. 4 overall pick to get additional selections.

As it stands, the Raiders pick in the first round (No. 4), the fourth (No. 104), the sixth (No. 169) and twice in the seventh (Nos. 213 and 226).

“More than ever, that’s something to look at because of not having a second-round pick, or a third or fifth,” coach Lane Kiffin said at the NFL owner’s meetings. “We could trade down. More than ever, because of having so few picks, if a certain player isn’t there I think you really have to look at that.”

If the Raiders trade down into the middle or late first round and the highest-rated player on their board is a wide receiver, then what?

A big part of the rebuilding process is giving JaMarcus Russell everything he needs to become a winning player, and in that regard, you can’t have enough quality receivers.

The Raiders have already added Javon Walker and Drew Carter in free agency, with incumbent Ronald Curry still on the roster along with second-year receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins.

But it’s worth noting that Walker, Carter and Curry have combined for nine major surgical procedures and that Higgins was less-than-overwhelming as a rookie out of Texas El-Paso.

So you don’t rule out the possibility of taking a receiver in Round 1 if the Raiders were to trade back.

Based on the Raiders draft history, as well as unpredictability of the position, it seems unlikely. On the other hand, if rumors of Al Davis wanting to poach Chad Johnson from Cincinnati are true, he is open to the idea of another explosive player at the position.

Since the merger in 1970, Oakland has taken wide receivers in the first round three times _ Mike Siani of Villanova in 1972, Jessie Hester of Florida State of 1985, and Tim Brown of Notre Dame in 1988.

Only Hester fit the supposed Raiders profile of a stretch-the-field deep threat, and he happened to be the least successful of the three. Siani was a medium-depth receiver with great hands and terrific ability to adjust to a ball in flight, and Brown a catch-and-run all-purpose offensive player who also excelled as a return specialist.

Last season, the Raiders could have taken Calvin Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick and passed. In 2004, they brought in Larry Fitzgerald for a visit on the same day they had in Robert Gallery and Eli Manning, and ended up with Gallery at No. 2 after Manning went No. 1.

Their philosophy has been to bring in experienced receivers rather than use a premium pick on one, and given that it is one of the most difficult positions to judge, it is difficult to argue with the strategy.

“It has the biggest mortality rate of any position percentage-wise,’’ said Gil Brandt, the former Dallas personnel executive who works with NFL.com as an analyst. “It’s buyer beware. There are always a lot of issues. If I pass on the first round and go in to the second or third round, is there going to be a dramatic dropoff? The answer is probably no.’’

Walker was a first-round pick by Green Bay in 2002 (No. 20 overall), but Carter was a fifth-round choice by Carolina and Curry, Oakland’s leading receiver the past two years, was a seventh-round draft pick after playing quarterback at North Carolina.

This year’s crop of wide receivers is considered fairly deep but with nothing approaching Johnson’s status last year, when he was the No. 2 overall selection by Detroit.

At the NFL combine, casual conversation with most coaches or talent evaluators seemed to indicate Oklahoma’s Malcolm Kelly (6-foot-4, 224 pounds) and Cal’s DeSean Jackson (5-10, 169) were at the top of the list, with Limas Sweed of Texas (6-4, 215), Devin Thomas (6-2, 215) of Michigan State, James Hardy (6-6, 217) of Indiana and Michigan’s Mario Manningham possibilities (6-0, 181) in the late-first or early-second category.

Since then, some injury concerns with Kelly (leg) and Sweed, combined with Jackson’s size may have vaulted Thomas into the spot as the top receiver.

Of those six receivers, all but Jackson and Mannigham are physical specimens in the mold of Johnson and and Dwayne Bowe, the two most productive rookies last season. Bowe, a college teammate of Russell at LSU, finished with 70 receptions for 998 yards and five touchdowns despite playing for one of the NFL’s poorest passing offenses.

Among Jackson’s supporters include Jerry Rice, who worked with him in the offseason and likens him to Carolina Pro Bowl receiver Steve Smith. Jackson also is a dangerous return specialist, an open position with Chris Carr having joined the Tennessee Titans after the Raiders declined to match an offer sheet.

Manningham restored some of the luster he lost at the combine with a 40-yard dash time in the 4.4 range at his pro day after running in the 4.6 range in Indianapolis.

    I sure hope not.

  2. Dakota Says:

Trade back, lol. In what universe has Al Davis ever traded out of the top of the first round?

  3. doug7dust Says:

    go get em

  4. frozen Says:

Tradedown with Cinci, get Ocho Cinco. There’s your receiver in the first round.

  5. Thec Says:

no childern in to claim first. good job dakota.

  6. saintkaufman Says:

It certainly looks like DE is the pick at #4. Move up if we have to or trade Sands or Warren and take one of the DT’s.
We should be able to walk away with either Chris Long or Dorsey. IMO the 2 best lineman at their positions.

  7. Thec Says:

That would leave cincy with 1 WR. with a thin WR corp in the draft, and chris henry being well chris henry doubt that 85 will be in silver and black anytime soon. Would be a nice addition though.

  8. raider1 Says:

We have more needs at d and o-line.

  9. frozen Says:

Yeah, I know, still hopin’ though.

  10. Dakota Says:

Need? Okay Stu Inman, go with need over talent.

  11. Oakglenn Says:

We have waaaaay more pressing needs on both lines. That’s exactly right.

  12. Scottish Raider Says:

Nonsense, Gerry. There will be some decent WR prospects still on the Board at the top of the 4th, including:

Donnie Avery, Houston. Was a little disapppointing at the draft - he only ran a 4:40! This guy has real speed and good hands. Yes, Houston run an odd system but the material is all there.

Keenan Burton, Kentucky. He is 6-0, 200lbs and is just a solid, reliable, smart football player. Very safe option. And under-rated because he doesn’t have blazing track speed.

Marcus Monk, Arkansas. Big: 6-4, 222lbs. He’s not fast and is recovering from knee surgery but, if the medics give the all-clear, he could be a steal. Monk had 50 receptions and 11 TDs despite playing with the SEC’s worst QBs.

Dexter Jackson, Appalachian State. The opposite of Monk. Small (5-9), but ran a 4-37 at the Combine and had a good senior bowl. Not to be discounted.

And if we wait until the 6th round, we might have a shot at the likes of Adrian Arrington (Michigan), Ernie Wheelwright (Minnesota) and Mark Bradford (Stanford).

If we do trade down for picks, there is still no need to go after a WR. Focus on OTs, DTs and Safeties and wait for the later rounds. The best WRs in this draft may be found on Day 2.

  13. fabian Says:

get ocho cinco and mcfadden and where set on offense for years and years

  14. frozen Says:

Anyone worried about the LT position?

  15. Scottish Raider Says:

    Frozen,

If we do trade down, the smart move would be to pick up a good Tackle. Someone like Ryan Clady, Chris Williams, Jeff Otah or Gosder Cherilus.

I think Williams is possibly the best OT behind Jake Long. He is a bit laid-back, but was a Co-Captain at Vanderbilt and hardly ever allowed a sack.

I used to like Sam Baker but his pro-day performance was a disaster. Very sluggish - especially after his Combine no-show.

  16. RIP Dan Birdwell Says:

Ain’t no way we go WR Round 1, unless we have Dallas’ two picks. Even then, why?

We have our z and x WRs in Walker and Curry. Slot is open between Higgins and Carter.

The guys who seem to have the best value at the WR position are, Donnie Avery and Dexter Jackson (as pointed out by Scottish Raider — How ’bout those Claymores!?) at the z and Jordy Nelson at the x. Nelson looks like a third rounder, which is the best case scenario for Avery/Jackson (and their agents).

Needs at 2-gap DT and O-line probably outweigh picking WR. Of the bunch mentioned in the blog, Manningham late 1st seems like a Raider pick.

    Peace.

  17. Mac Black (Mark Armstead) Says:

Trade next years pick; 1 and 3 for ocho cinco!!
    We dont need Mc Fadden.
Pick all offense and defensive line this year.
Any team is only as good as there O-line and D-line.

  18. Future glory Says:

Im not actually too concerned about LT i think the offensive line aint great but we have bigger concerns and will get by. Harris will hopefully do a decent job this season.

Im still confident that we will get a second round pick with Washington or another trade so hope Davis/Kiffin will pick up Early Doucet the LSU WR

  19. Future glory Says:

The Claymores were legendary-1996 Eurobowl i was there in Murrayfield baby!

  20. Tay Says:

If the Raiders trade down and get DeSean Jackson. They would be getting a WR and a return guy. That a 2 for 1 deal. Then consider trading down gets them another draft pick. You may taking care of three positions for the price of one.

If Dorsey and C. Long are gone by #4. I hope they trade down.

  21. Alex Says:

I think the most pressing need is D-Line.
I hope uncle Al can draft Dorsey

  22. Dakota Says:

Funny how according to Kiffin the Raiders have zero interest in drafting McFadden, yet he is in Alameda for a visit today…strange how that works, lol.

  23. JB Says:

My pick is Ellis or Gholston. I like Dorsey but the microfractures in his leg are the things that jump up later and end careers. I’m looking for the top DL that will be good for the next 6-10 years. A lineup of
    Burgess-Kelley-Ellis-Richardson or
    Burgess-Kelley-Warren/Sands-Gholston
look very upgraded compared to what we had last year. Let’s trade next years first and get BOTH Ellis & Gholston. Now that would be a hand to draw to.

  24. Scottish Raider Says:

    Dakota,

And Kiffin did say that to get the best out of McFadden you would have to set him a little wider - just like Kiffin used to set Reggie Bush in his USC days.

  25. trikee Says:

    Scottish Raider,

    Go easy on “Jerry” ….

But as to your point to Dexter Jackson. On http://www.kffl.com Feb 23, the Raiders made contact with him and have interest.

My prediction is that we use a possible 3rd rounder from a trade for Washington on Dextor Jackson.

  26. fabian Says:

all these predraft politics are great, one long game of poker haha. and mcfadden is a ace

  27. RIP Dan Birdwell Says:

Just checked out the results for Donnie Avery’s pro day.

Ran a 4.32/4.35 pair of forties and a 3.9 short shuttle — but clocked an astounding 3.29 3-cone drill. Balance out playing for a second tier school in a minor conference versus his measurables, and the question becomes where he goes. If he’s available when we pick in the fourth, gotta have him if Athyba Rubin is off the board — and maybe is he isn’t.

Versus Dexter Jackson, Avery is more physical and has better hands. Oh — and in an interview w/ ESPN, when asked what contribution he could make immediately, he talked about special teams.

    Peace.

  28. Future glory Says:

I still say Early Doucet. Probs will never be any gd i jus love the name.

  29. Scottish Raider Says:

If we are going to trade for a 3rd, I still wouldn’t take a WR - unless we want to take a chance on Oakland’s own, Davone Bess.

Bess is smart, reliable and apparantly a Raiders fanatic.

  30. Thec Says:

Ellis or C. long, cant go wrong. concerned about ghoulston playing against big ten comp. Pac 10
has the best offences in the country IMHO. that said
ellis has seen some of the best running backs and QB’s in his 4 year stint. Ellis or C. long, can’t go wrong.

  31. Thec Says:

Bess is in alemeda right now talking X’s and O’s with Al.

  32. RIP Dan Birdwell Says:

Davone Bess will be, at best, a late 7th rounder, more likely a UFA. No need to spend a draft choice on him at all. Compare his workout at Hawaii’s pro day to Avery’s at Houston’s (courtesy of the NFL-controlled internet):

WR Davone Bess (5-10 1/8, 189): Ran the 40 in 4.60, had a 32 ½-inch vertical jump, 9-foot, 7-inch long jump, 4.28 short shuttle, 7.15 cone drill, 17 reps in the bench press, ran position workout.

    WR Donnie Avery (5-11 1/8, 182): Ran the 40 in 4.35 and 4.34, had a 37 ½-inch vertical jump, 10-foot, 6-inch long jump, 3.91 short shuttle, 6.30 cone drill, ran position drills.

That said, I do kinda like Bess. Reminds me, I can’t say why based on his measurables, of Andre Rison. I wouldn’t mind seeing the kid invited to camp.

    Peace.

  33. Thec Says:

This sport has really changed. It is wayyyy more sophistcated than in the past. IMHO You damn near have to be a scientist with atheletic skills to play QB. Its not just about physical talent anymore. Need a combo of brains and brawn. QB has to go thru a bazillion things and then could still get killed.

  34. Scottish Raider Says:

And we could probably pick up Bess’s old QB, Colt Brennan, at No169.

If the Packers are seriously thinking about taking Brian Brohm as either an insurance against Rodgers failing or as future trade bait, shouldn’t we also be looking to draft a QB in the 6th or 7th?

Ryan O’Hara, Dennis Dixon, Kyle Wright and Matt Flynn would be other options.

Dogg, you really hate the Lakers don’t you? Lol. that is good, always hate your opponents.

I never said the Lakers would “sweep all of their opponents in the playoffs”, but I did say that it would be like a bye if they faced the W’s in the first round, lol. Just poking fun.

Are the W’s even in the playoffs at this moment? Seriously, are they ahead of the buttnuggets at this time?

I don’t think that the dream matchup (Lakers/W’s) is going to happen. The Lakers are probably going to finish 3rd. I hope the Warriors can take out the Hornets for us though.”

    Dakota -

Yes I hate the Lakers as much as I hate the Bronco’s. Very perceptive of you ;)

There are a few Laker fans on this blog that said those “sweep” remarks and they are in for a surprise.

The Warriors are still tied for the 8th spot, with Sac on Tuesday and Denver on Thursday. They better get it done. I have no delusions about the current state of my team.

If the Warriors do face the Hornets, I like the W’s chances, even though they lost to them on Sunday in NOLA. The Warriors had a 13 point lead at one point in the 2nd half and then all of a sudden there was a lid on the basket. It wasn’t about the Hornets as it was more about the W’s just not executing.

What are the chances the W’s and Lakers meet in the 2nd round if the W’s and Lakers make it that far?

  36. Ryan Says:

I can’t remember his name, but there was a WR from Hawaii that looked good. Good YAC guy and could return punts. If he is comming out, I like him in the late rounds. I think the kid played High School ball in Oakland.

  37. Future glory Says:

take Bess if he is not drafted if he really is a raiders fanatic. passion is as important as talent.

  38. Thec Says:

Now dennis dixon would be nice. problem is he is such a playmaker I would have a hard time sitting him. I am not suggesting starting him over J but I would involve him in the offense.

  39. Ryan Says:

Oh! Thanks. That was Bess I was thinking of…

  40. Scottish Raider Says:

Bess has bounced up and down this draft board like a rubber ball. Just like the other Brennanites, Jason Rivers and Ryan Grice-Mullen. I have seen them as high as the 3rd and as low as the 7th.

It all depends how you view the June Jones offense. Yes, Bess is only 187lbs and ran a terrible 4.69 at the Combine. However, he also caught 96 receptions, 1,220 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2006.

I think all the Hawaiians are being marked down too harshly. Bess is a smart football player and if he was available in the 7th, that would be a great bargain.

  41. fabian Says:

wide recievers come a dime a dozen rather pointless new blog if u ask me, I guess all positions get love in the chat room.

  42. Scottish Raider Says:

Hey Fabian. Haven’t we traded you for a 2nd rounder yet? Or are teams waiting on your court appearance?

  43. DesertRaider24 Says:

Jerry–to your topic question, NO. The quote you yourself used from one of the top personnel evaluators in Gil Brandt supports my answer, and it’s an answer most of the Nation agrees with. Most of us know that you can always get a quality WR without necessarily spending a 1st round pick.

Perhaps your next topic should discuss whether or not the O-line situation has been settled; you point out that “a big part of the rebuilding process has been to give JRuss all he needs to be a winning player;” since we have already signed both Walker and Carter, the WR needs have been met–what about the O-line to protect JRuss, particularly LT?

You’ve already discussed D-line needs; no need to rehash it (besides, I happen to agree with the majority that says we need to spend that #4 pick on C. Long, Ellis, Dorsey, or Gholston).

Just don’t bring up that RB from Arkansas…LOL

  44. RaiderDogg Says:

How about reporting on the fact that Darren McFadden is in Alameda right now! Some details would be nice.

  45. NM79 Says:

No lets not trade with the bengals, Chad J is easily shut out of a game, he isnt really tough and drops many balls he also talk to much and without Houzmadadaz Chad would have good numbers, we need a big middle LB that can make a running back think twice about coming in the middle that way when they the opponet tries to go outside Howard,Kirk or Burgess is right there to stop him, no offense to Kirk I like him but he isnt real good getting off blocks he is more like an ouside LB, Then we need either a big NT or Terdell to step up and make plays!!!

  46. saintkaufman Says:

What is there to know Dogg?

His 40 time from the lobby to the locker room?
Better hope there was no turns! lol

  47. NM79 Says:

sorry i ment that Chad would not have good numbers

  48. Scottish Raider Says:

NM79, I entirely agree about the need for a true MLB. Sadly the best two prospects (Laurinaitis and Manaluga) have stayed in school. If we do trade down, Dan Connor would be a nice pick-up at the bottom of the first. He is a great tackler and really strong against the run.

  49. fabian Says:

are u crazy chad has the best numbers since 2003. And i hope they trade me soon so i can buy a new house with a new wife and a new roll royce somewhere although i’mmah lose money on my oakland hills mansion. But yeah i doubt you’ll get a 2nd rounder for me prolly a 3rd or 4th.

  50. Thec Says:

Rey Maualuga is the Best LB in college, Rey is the hardest hitting LB in college. Rey will be top 5
    pick next year.

    Maualuga > laurenitis.

  51. JediRaider Says:

I can see trading down if we get a good offer, but a WR in round 1? I don’t think so - we’ve got too much cash tied up in Walker and Curry’s deal isn’t exactly a bargain - I think we’re set this year on WR - I can see a late round pick or a mid round pick if somebody drops to compete with JLH and some of the other guys we have on the roster right now though - a few of these top 5 WR’s have some good pro potential, but nobody has jumped off the board as a “must have” type of guy. If Walker returns to form, I think we’ve got a very good core of experienced Vets that complement each other well - Walker as a good all around #1, Curry as a #2 posssion type of Reciver, Carter with some deep speed, and Miller as a good possession TE. If Walker comes back to form, he would command double teams, which is what we really need. If Walker busts, we’re hosed because his salary will kill our cap and we’ll have to hope to get lucky with a WR next year in round 2 or 3 where the salary will be low. All I can say is that his knee better hold up - I personally don’t think somebody that has had two major knee issues in three years should have got that kind of contract, no matter what the doctors said. I know we were desperate for a #1 WR with some deep speed, but this is risky. Hopefully he can still run a sub 4.4 (4.38 at his combine six years ago or so) - Jerry Porter ran a 4.48/4.55 and has good knees and I always thought they both had very similar abilities and playing styles - porter also cost 1/2 as much as Javon Walker. We’ll see what happens, I was definetly tired of Porter’s inconsistency and lack of intensity on the field. If Walker is a more focused Jerry Porter, then the deal was worth it and we won’t need to worry about WR for a few years, if not, we’re going to be in bad situation.

  52. DesertRaider24 Says:

If Chad Johnson somehow becomes a Raider, then my questions about our O-line will have been answered…if Al is willing to shell out money and picks / trades for CJ, then they obviously must be confident in the O-line makeup, because the cupboard will definitely be bare…

  53. fabian Says:

if we get chad we have complety made over are offense and defense….Al Davis would be my hero hands down.

  54. Kirk Says:

Could Gholston play middle linebacker ala Lawrence Taylor?

  55. DesertRaider24 Says:

Thanks for showing the UH WRs some respect, Scottish. Yes, they get panned for playing in the WAC, and they were dominated by Georgia in their bowl game, but hey, if the price is right, why not? As long as these kids can catch, they can give JLH and Curry some competition…

  56. patrick Says:

I definitely would have seen receiver in the first in a trade down scenario before the singings of Walker and Carter. As it is, I still don’t think its out of the question.

Kirk-LT (the real one whom you reference) was an OLB, not MLB.

  57. Raiderkoolaid Says:

I would like to see us get Dennis Dixon either late in the draft, or else as an UDFA. I think with his athletic ability he may turn out to be something special.

I believe that if Miami where to fail to make their pick in the allotted time, then St. Louis would go on the clock. After St. Lousis made their pick Miami would go back on the clock for five minutes. If they still didn’t pick then Atlanta would go on the clock, and then Miami would get another five minutes to pick.

    saintkaufman -

My point is that Jerry never even told us about McFadden visiting on Monday. While he’s busy re-gurgitating old news, other journalists are actually reporting inside info, much more so than Jerry. I’m thinking that maybe Jerry isn’t as “inside” as he would like to be or once was.

I guess my sarcasm went right over your head saint.

  59. RaiderDell Says:

The logic in trading for Chad Johnson makes no sense.

    Here is why:

The Bengals will want at least a round two pick, as of today we have nonePossibly a low end pick also.

The Bengals will take a cap hit of 7 million for this year from the accelerated bonus paid to him two years ago. My source Cinn Bengals.com/ johnson, MMQB Peter King.

The Bengals will be crippled by the cap charge, and would need to cut or renegotiate contracts.

The Raiders have invested in four wide receivers for this year in Salary $8 million dollars with a bonus to Walker around $11 million, which is not carried into the salary cap for this year only future years if he does not work out.(bonus money spread out life of the contract)

The Raiders have currently $1 million dollars in cap space, not a big deal to restructure or cut a few players for extra room, but Chad is not going to play for his current salary, that is what his beef is all about, show him the money.

With all the factors how can you say we need Chad Johnson, I haven’t even spoke about the samr position both Walker and Chad play, they both line up as the X receiver in the base offense.

Please don’t tell me it’s no big deal, some WR’s don’t like the Z receiver, the strong side, double teams and the tigh end usually create less balls thrown to that side and our flanked out to the short side of the field.

Dream on guys, will not happen.

  60. cjslime Says:

    D. Jackson is the real deal. Do not be fooled by his size. He has the potential to be the offensive rookie of the year. Oakland needs an impact offensive threat very badly. If they are going to get back to respectability, they must be able to score from anywhere on the field at anytime (Cliff Branch, Marcus Allen, Bo Jackson, Tim Brown).

  63. RaiderDogg Says:

I know all about Norcos, just Vicodin but stronger. I shattered my wrist a few years back and had external fixators, basically 2 pounds of metal drilled into my arm to stablize the bone and keep it in place for 2 months bbefore surgery to remove it.

I popped all kinds of Norcos in that time and they weren’t all that easy to come off of after 4 months. I have since got a prescription from MEDICANN and use my own medicinal remedies as opposed to other “conventional” meds.

I know you know about combining Norco’s with alcohol (LB Ales) but did you know that if you mix Norco’s with Valium for an extended period of time it causes the replication of the psychotic state including hallucinations and the like? It’s not the fun kind of hallucinations either. More like a really bad trip on PCP.

I never mixed N & V but I heard all about it from someone in my family that had an “episode”. Just be careful bro, that sh*t is no joke.

  74. fabian Says:

Im hoping for mcfadden for the excitment factor that comes along with everytime he touches the ball, defense would be great to, but it just looks to much like what the niners did last year and look how they turned out.

  75. Anthos Says:

yes we are solid at 2 lb positions but if we had a better outside lb then we would really be good

Al will not take a WR in the first round. Timmy Brown was a rare talent when he was drafted and he won the Heisman.

There are no Timmy Browns in this years draft. Nobody that even looks like a lock to go in the first round.

James Hardy might be the best talent with upside, but people are scared of his “Basketball” mentality suggesting that he is too soft.

Desean Jackson weighs 170lbs… what more needs to be said: value pick in rds two or three.

Malcom Kelly has yet to work out and his stock has plummeted bad over the past two months out of the first round.

Limas Sweed maybe the only 1st round kid, but he has been slowed by injuries recently in work outs.

Devin Thomas is junior with only one year of productivity. Robert Meachem was a junior with one year of productivity and he was in active all last year. Sidney Rice was a redshirt sophmore, but he had two years of productivity at South Carolina. He had a good rookie year, but nothing to suggest he should have went hire than where the Vikes took him last year. I think Thomas goes no earlier than the Cowboys at 28 because they will not need him to come in and be productive next year with TO, Crayton, and Witten as a nice set of receivers for Romo to play with.

Mario Manningham had a bad combine, but he did rebound well at the michigan Pro day. He is a early 2nd, late 1st pick.

Andre Caldwell is Reche’s little brother which is a scary thought for anyone thinmking 1st round.

I think the steal of the draft is Dexter Jackson in the 3rd round/ late 2nd out of App St. The kid is a flyer and he might be the best WR in the class.

I am no expert but I see the WR corps as being rated like this:

    1-James Hardy- First
    2-Desean Jackson- late first
    3-Dexter Jackson - late 2nd/ early third
    4-Limas Sweed- 1st
    5-Andre Caldwell- 2nd
    6- Mannigham- 2nd
    7- Devin Thomas- late first/ 2nd
    8- Jordy Nelson- late 2nd/ 3rd
    9- Early Doucett- late 2nd/ 3rd
    10- Lavelle Hawkins- 3rd

  80. JediRaider Says:

I’m sure Al looked at aquiring CJ as soon as he expressed his desire to be traded - As someone already pointed out, the Bengals just can’t take that cap hit, and they still feel they are super bowl contenders with CJ, TJ, Rudi, and Carson - it’s going to have to get real ugly in Cinci before they dump Chad. We put all our marbles on Javon being our #1, making him one of the highest paid WR’s in the game, we can’t afford to add another one - besides, both are head cases, we can’t afford to have two of them at the same position. I’d rather have CJ, but I’d rather not have him with Javon already on the roster at this point. Besides, CJ is 30 - it may be 3 more years before we’re ready to contend for the superbowl again - we need to get younger at that position from here on out, but we can address the o line and d line for the next couple of years in the draft before we have to worry about it. If we pick up a couple more picks in the draft and somebody falls to us after we’ve addressed NT, DE, OL, and SLB, then I don’t have a problem going after a reciever.

  81. RaiderDogg Says:

  84. NM79 Says:

Morrison is more like a strongside LB we still need a true MLB not that Morrison isnt any good at MLB but he is built like a OLB

  85. Repo Man Says:

Lane Kiffin needs to continue running this team bunker style. He knows he’s gone, and has nothing to lose. I love the way he’s calling Davis “Al”, as opposed to the obligatory “Mr. Davis” the peons in the organization call him. Anyhow, if he continues to just run the team with or without blessings from the powers that be in the organization, we’ll continue to improve. History has proven that when coaches outright shun Al and just coach the team their own way right under his nose, we improve. On the other hand, history has proven that when coaches cower to Davis and his ideas, we lose. Let’s see what the kid can pull off in his lame duck year. Best case scenario: The team wins and it forces Al’s hand, thus resulting in Kiffin staying. Worst case scenario: He exposes Al for how senile he really is, forcing him to fire a coach that improves the team over 100% with each season.

  86. Future glory Says:

Fabian ur scaring me telling us that we are looking a bit 07 49er like. it is a bit similar. Raiders do have far more class though in the roster + we dnt have a weak ass QB like Smith

Listening to BB King right now, the CD is some of his better songs I burned to one CD.

Keith River is a good football player, I just think if we go linebacker Gholston is the guy.

Gholston can play with his hand down or play the Sam Linebacker position, his strength can be a factor on run plays as he will have to shed the blocks of the tight end and I believe can drop into the passing lanes.

  91. Repo Man Says:

    “middle easterners”..pardon me.

  92. Future glory Says:

Trotter wont be too expensive he wasnt great last season so he shouldnt demand too much. He is real mean on the field and a winner. id love to see him added to the roster put a bit of intensity into our nice guy defense

  93. Blackholepriest Says:

Gholston, Long or Ellis. please get one of them Kiff. and another physical LBer in the 4th and we are on our way. Anything else is gravy.

  94. Thec Says:

I have been saying get spikes, but his injury may be a little more. the whiners passed on him.

  95. Repo Man Says:

Forgive me, then. You’re blaming Chicanos, which essentially means “Mexican Americans”. Corrected. Now, will you stop blaming them (or thanking them, in your words), for your destructive behavior?

  96. Future glory Says:

Who do u guys ACTUALLY think the raiders wil draft?

Im not sure who i want but think we will go for Gholston

  97. NM79 Says:

well if dallas would trade those two frist round picks for DMAC maybe we could get connor and pat simms or red bryant

  98. Anthos Says:

the raiders should at least look at spike tho u never know what they can find or not find in terms of injury

  99. Future glory Says:

Even if his injury is more severe than thought use that to get him on the cheap. put him in on the big plays or 4th quarter his experience and intensity is priceless. other players would learn from him

  100. Repo Man Says:

Lane Kiffin needs to draft Dorsey if he’s available. Just submit him, rather DAvis wants him or not. Who gets the official call? If anyone from the Raiders organization submits the pick, it’s official. So Kiffin should just do that. What’s Al going to do, sue him for making the team better?

  101. Alameda Insider Says:

  102. RaiderDogg Says:

I’m cool with Gholston for sure, I just am really high on Rivers. I just have this feeling that he is going to be a beast for many years to come. It’s a nice dilemma to have, I guess I could settle for Gholston :)

Down the road when Rivers is tearing up the league think of me and turn up some more BB King.

The BB King I’ve been liking lately is Riding With The King, his album with Eric Clapton. Good stuff.

  103. NM79 Says:

i agree with repo man but we already have a 3technique in Kelly

  104. Blackholepriest Says:

  105. Future glory Says:

Dorsey will be availabe the falcons will take Ryan they cant afford not to. i actually think ryan will be better than people say he seems pretty calm almost brady like

  106. Repo Man Says:

You’re right, I did use the term, “blame”, which is what I believe you’re doing. I read your post correctly. You’re high right now, and the fact that you’re crediting Chicanos for your self destruction in any way is a precursor to your typical racism that you’ve already displayed here. You’re a noted racist against blacks and middle easterners. So how are we not to believe that your “thanking” of Mexican Americans for your current addiction doesn’t instantly transfer to blaming them, the minute you come down and wake up in your trash dumpster?

  107. Future glory Says:

C long will be gone J long will be gone and i think Ryan will be gone.

Leaving Gholston, McFadden, Dorsey and Ellis

  108. Alameda Insider Says:

  109. Kirk Says:

    Could Gholston play middle linebacker?

  110. Future glory Says:

I think he could. He would be very similar to Derrel Brooks if he moved to linebacker maybe not middle

  111. Dski Says:

I was watching ESPN and there was a comment that after QB, WR is the hardest position for a rookie to come in and be successful at.

I don’t think Cincy would trade Chad to us because we have little to offer in terms of replacement to them. They would need to plug that hole this year, otherwise, it’s a big waste of Carson Palmer.

I like the idea of McFadden, but we need someone who can help with run defense immediately. Adding another pass rusher will have minimal impact unless our offense forces teams to play catch-up.

  112. RaiderDell Says:

    RaiderDogg

off subject but, last year coach Kiff built the team around the defense - The defense took a nose dive that no one seen coming - This year is going to be different - Kif can’t take any chances on building the team around the defense, so I see Kiff being more agressive this coming year and taking more chances - He held back a lot in the begin of the year, towards the end he started to open up the throttle more, which sure helped out a lot - I see Kif being more agressive with the additions of JJWalker and Drew Carter - Curry will be a great slot reciever and i’m expecting big things from Zach Miller’s 2nd year - Teams will have to watch for that play action and will be tenative to loading 8 men in the box every play as they did last year - With a better offense teams will have to take more chances in the air against the best 2ndary in the league - also with a better offense are defense will be on the field less and will have more energy throughout the game - granted we stay healthy my crystal ball tells me we will be either 1 or 2 in the league in rushing as a team

My son had a dude bail and it was a last minute deal, pretty intense group and sound.

I guess there is hope for me, right.

  122. Blackholepriest Says:

Why would you want Gholston to play MLB??? his greatness is at DE. Where he might be an impact player to bookend with Burgess, giving us one of the better tandems in the game.

  123. edward teach Says:

It sure would be nice if C. Long fell to us at 4, but unfortunately Parcells is running things in Miami now. Wouldn’t surprise me, though, if the Fins traded out of that spot. What would surprise me is if we draft an offensive tackle early, although stranger things have happened. With all the D-Line signings lately we could be looking elsewhere with our #1, although unless it’s trading down or McFadden I think that would be a little wrong-headed.

I spoke about Donnie Avery a couple of months ago, and still think we should grab him if we can. He returned kicks and punts at Houston as well, if I remember correctly. It would be fun to see the footraces between he, DeAngelo, Johnnie Lee and Routt during training camp…

  124. Alameda Insider Says:

Linkin Park?…any “band” that has a dude scratchin records, as an instrument, sucks…..we only play metal at our tailgates,..to drown out the Rap that surrounds us.

  125. NM79 Says:

  126. Blackholepriest Says:

per your #112 post I would prefer Gholston if not him Ellis and Dorsey or even in my mind, a little different but both soo talented it comes down to your scheme.

  127. edward teach Says:

BHP, I agree with you completely. Gholston is our man, for two reasons; he’s going to be a great player, and after Burgess leaves next year we won’t have a genuine passrusher at DE. Great players at that position are hard to come by, and they change games.

  128. RaiderDell Says:

    Alameda

You are just waiting for an argument, you know somebody is going to defend Rap.

  130. Blackholepriest Says:

Why does everyone think Burgess will leave I’m not sure I get it. for what money??? Burgess is just too talented and when you get two bookend DE’sof that calibre why let one get away unless someone better is waiting and I don’t see anyone better.

So maybe you can see the future, but I think we need both.

  131. Alameda Insider Says:

Our defense was exactly the same last year as it was in ‘06. The difference you’re looking for is the fact that teams didn’t need to throw the ball on us in 06 because they knew we wouldn’t score points. Kiffin changed that. Why do you gus guys constantly downplay the efforts of the smartest and most determined guy in this plummeting organization; Lane Kiffin? That’s true sarcasm.

As for DMAC’s visit - who cares? As Jerry pointed out the Raiders met with Eli Manning too…They have a whooping five picks but will meet with probably thirty players. You do the math. They met with Calvin Johnson last year. Why would they draft a wR this year? They’ve got Manning-to-CJ all day long.

  165. Repo Man Says:

Goodnight, AI. Hope that intervention comes soon. Surely someone out there loves you enough to care.

  166. Repo Man Says:

He needs to be allowed to do his job, so this team can win again. I’m glad Jerry writes about that, and this fan, along with the silent majority of Raider fans, no doubt, thank him dearly.

    Just Coach Kiff Baby!

  172. John Says:

I would love to see the Raiders trade down. McFadden isn’t needed, especially in the cut blocking scheme. Denver has made a living putting 7th round choices in their backfield and watching them run for 1500 yards. This team needs talent, and the more the better. Kiffin knows this even if AD doesn’t. The best run stuffing DT available and a wide receiver with two first round choices makes sense to me.

Jerry’s post yesterday was great. I’m glad someone in the press is keeping tabs on Al Davis and how he doesn’t allow Kiffin to bring this team back to greatness.

“Doesn’t allow Kiffin to bring this team back to greatness.” “Doesn’t allow Kiffin to bring this team back to greatness….” Oooooookayyyy. How is that? By trying to get Jeff Garcia who Kiff said he wanted? By getting Josh MCCown who was available when Garcia wasn’t?? By allowing Kiff to trade his prized Possession Randy Moss for basically nothing??? By shoring up the defensive line, by getting the leader of a Super Bowl team in a desperately needed position??? This is NOT allowing Kiffin to return the team to greatness??? How’s about getting not only a #1 receiver, but a very good #2 WR as well???? How’s about listening to Kiff and Cable and shifting Simms out for Harris who Cable thinks he can reclaim???? What about making the biggest off season acquisition in the league by trading for a pro bowl corner???? Maybe bringing in a Hall of Fame reciever coach after Kiff’s choice Coe couldn’t develop JLH??? I could go on for hours but, this is just moronic! Why do you people even read his drivel???

  177. Repo Man Says:

Oakglenn, spoke it like a true employee of the Raiders. Riddle me this, whey didn’t Al let Kiffin fire Rob Ryan?

Why did Kiffin allude to not wanting D. Hall, or spending the money we did on Kelly?

Davis is building this team, Oakglenn. And Davis doesnt’ know how to build a team. Kiffin does. And Al’s not letting him do it. That’s why Kiffin already wants out, and therefore why he’s disrespecting Al in public, via calling him “Al” as opposed to the comany line of “Mr. Davis”.

You’re not living in reality, Oakglenn. You’re living in a world of hype, and cherry picking the very few realistic things that support your hype.

Davis is driving Kiffin out of here, and it’s too bad, because Kiffin is our only prayer to being good again.

  178. Repo Man Says:

Oakglenn, I have to learn to read your entire posts, because I see toward the end you actuall come around to admitting that Al is taking control from Kiffin, by downplaying Kiffin’s choice as recievers coach and supporting Al bringing in Lofton.

Why do I even bother arguing with you? It’s much better to just leave you with your own rope.

  179. GRaider Says:

Home from work. No way do we trade down. Not happening. We are assured a likely impact player from the top eschelon fo the draft: Gholston, Dorsey, C. Long, or J. Long. We’re not giving that away. It’s just not the Raider way.

Okay, so if we do? I agree with the combined comments of Scottish R and NM79 that we start by taking Ryan Clady (OT) (a better system match than Otah). And then we take a tough linebacker (Rivers if lucky, otherwise Dan Connor) or DeSean Jackson. Despite the success of the Saints’ Marques Colston a couple years ago, WRs typically take several years to deliver. Jackson’s return game, however, gives him the chance to make an impact as a rookie. And his natural talent might worry defenses, drawing more than his share of coverage down field while letting Miller roam underneath.

  180. Raiders24/7 Says:

Dick Williams won under Charlie Finley, albeit out of spite but this unholy union could play out to at least a playoff run if Kiffin gets the respect of the team and play for the kid.

  181. GRaider Says:

I’m not worryied about the coaching. Keeping Kiffen is key (continuity, player confidence [the way they kept fighting], the training of J Russ).

You don’t have to love your boss to be great at what you do. Kiffen loves football and he has proven to be a real competitor. He will not sit on his hands whimpering about an argument with Davis at the end of the season. He wants to do his job well and he wants to win.

With our cornerbacks, we can play man under Ryan and win. A killer talent on the D-line would really amo up our D, and Kiffen obviously appreciates that.

I think we will be good to go.

  182. Dakota Says:

I was surprised to see both Mel and Todd McShay state that they would select Matt Ryan over Russell if they were both in this year’s draft. McShay practically gave Russell a reach around after the LSU pro day last year. He said it was the best pro day he had ever seen…but somehow Matt Ryan’s less than impressive pro day has vaulted him over Russell? What a joke.

  183. Dakota Says:

holy shite, did you see that?

  184. Dakota Says:

Can you say carry or travel???…but since I want Kansas to win…good no-call, lol.

  185. DoeDoe Says:

WoW, I didn’t hear about that.. Todd McShay said that J-Maks performance at the combine was the greatest he has ever seen in the 12 years he’s been evaluating players - I bet ESPN added a extra bonus for Mel and Todd to say that they would take Matt over J-Mak

  186. Blackghost Says:

The only way man to man works is with pressure from the front four and were not consistent with that.So it is an absolute must that we shore up our defensive line!We could have two of the best D ends and it wouldnt matter much if we cant stop the run,cuz teams wont pass on us.You have to stop the run and get teams in passing downs, then come hard on the edges and up the gut and force Qbs to challenge hall and nmandi. That would be the perfect situation

  187. Dakota Says:

Prepare yourselves for the “Greatest Championship Game Ever” debate on all the sports shows tomorrow.

  188. DoeDoe Says:

at his pro day I meant - typical BSPN type sh!t

  189. DoeDoe Says:

    Kansas got this one

  190. Oakglenn Says:

Some of us deal in facts, some of us here deal in rumour and innuendo. Say Mo whatcolour were Kiffs sox today??? Silver means things are looking up….Black means,

Dakota that’s crazy. Hence why those guys aren’t working in any personnel depts. So what part is Ryan better??? Physically?? No. Level of competition??? No. As I’ve said here over and over I saw Elways first game as a pro and Jam is SO much more developed as Pro QB than Elway was coming out. Unbelievable.

  191. Oakglenn Says:

    Classic game BTW

  192. Dakota Says:

They said that Matt Ryan did more with less than Russell. None of Matt Ryan’s RB, WRs etc. are going to be NFL players, so his leadership and intangibles are better than Russell, or some BS like that.

  193. GRaider Says:

With Kelly at 3-tech, I’d like Dorsey for the burst inside. Otherwise, it’s Sand on 1st and 2nd with Edwards on passing 3rd downs, perhaps in a 3-4 with one of Burgess, Edwards, or Gholston/C. Long up.

  194. Dakota Says:

    3-4, lol…not going to happen.

  195. GRaider Says:

Not on 1st or 2nd. On 3rd and Long, make that a 3-3 nickle with one of the pass rushers up (with Morrison and Howard).

  196. Dakota Says:

Warning: Non-football related, just sad and crazy stuff.

  197. Oakglenn Says:

Intangibles make Ryan a better player than Jam??? Even tho Jam was 25-4 as a starter in the SEC. That’s another way of saying they have NO IDEA why Ryan would be a better prospect.

  198. frozen Says:

Sheesh, even I can’t make any Texan jokes about that. That’s just rough!

  199. Dakota Says:

I think Al Davis had that surgery in 1984.

  200. DSM Raider Says:

I really hate the argument, “Matt Ryan did more with less.”

Like it’s Russell’s fault he had talent all around him. He still won 26 out 30 games he started in a tough SEC, not a WEAK Big East.

Russell is by far the better QB than Ryan, hands down. I can’t believe Kiper & McShay would actually say something so ridiculous.

  201. frozen Says:

    199- BLAM !!!!!!!!!!!

  202. DSM Raider Says:

OOPS- Ryan plays in the ACC now so there’s a step up in the competition, but it’s still not as good as the SEC.

  203. Oakglenn Says:

The funniest part of all of it is Jam has done NOTHING to dispel the feeling that he is going to be very, very, good for a long time. You could almost give it up to those knuckleheads if Jam came in and REALLY struggled, but that didn’t happen. As a matter of fact he looked pretty damn good.

  204. dick v Says:

The ACC is weak comopared to the Pac-10, SEC, Big Ten and Big East.

Did any of those draft analyst see Ryan play against Michigan state in the bowl game. Show me a player that has talent on that defense. Ryan completed less than 50% of his passes in that game. the man stunk it up against Va Tech all night save two nice drives at the end of the game. On top of that he does not have a strong arm. You need a strong arm to be a franchise QB in the NFL. I like Henne, Brohm and Woodson way better than I like Ryan in this years draft. Ryan probably will not go in the top ten. KC has Croyle: Ryan does not make the case to scrap the croyle experiment. QB’s like Russell, Rothlisberger, Eli, and Vince Young will make you forget about a player like Croyle, but Ryan is not in that class.

  205. Oakglenn Says:

DSM, you’re right but it’s not like he was even a four year starter. Basically he started two years. I like Matt Ryan, I think he’s going to be a good player, but he is NOT Jam. Sorry.

  206. dick v Says:

Ryan threw 19 int’s his senior year any way you look at it. When Brady Quinn cried about his talent and dropped balls last year, i knew he was through, and Ryan is through as well.

Ryan is at best a Matt Hassellback: what round was he drafted?
I think Alex smith is the same grade a Ryan. Maybe there is a team stupid enough to take him in the top ten.

  207. Dakota Says:

Then again, maybe the ability to speak English may be a factor in McShay’s comparisons:
