Schedule order will be huge
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, April 14th, 2008 at 1:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.
When the NFL schedule is released Tuesday, it will be more than the order in which the Raiders play their 2008 opponents.
It could be road map to the future of Lane Kiffin as Raiders head coach.
As of late February, Kiffin himself wasn’t sure where he stood with Al Davis and couldn’t be absolutely certain he would retain his job.
At the end of the regular season, Kiffin had his own ideas about how to turn around a 4-12 record and build on the good points of his first year as Raiders head coach. He was sharply critical of a defense which was expected to be the strength of the 2007 season and promised change.
Rob Ryan saw the writing on the wall, plus a potential opening with his friend Eric Mangini with the Jets, and volunteered to walk the plank.
Al Davis has his own ideas, particularly when it comes to defense.
“Al is very hands-on on that side of trhe ball and very demanding,” Kiffin said at the owner’s meetings. “He had his opinions on things.”
Davis saw enough in the kid coach to keep him around, but wasn’t about to bend to his every whim. Not when Kiffin had been around for a year and Davis had built the organization right down to the team colors.
There was a marked difference in the Kiffin who talked at his first owner’s meeting and the one who surfaced a year later. Instead of talking about how things had to be in place with regard to staffing and personnel or he wouldn’t have taken the job, Kiffin was stressing that Davis was the general manager, he was the coach. When asked how much weight his opinion carries, he said he didn’t know.
Kiffin did something no other Raiders coach has ever done. He went 4-12 and lived to coach the following year. The Raiders offseason spending spree has been the talk of the NFL. They re-signed Tommy Kelly and Justin Fargas to big money. Traded for cornerback DeAngelo Hall. Signed safety Gibril Wilson, receivers Javon Walker and Drew Carter and center John Wade in free agency.
Kiffin isn’t going 4-12 again, because if the Raiders look anything like a team which could finish that poorly, he’ll be out before the season is over _ the first in-season coaching change since Mike Shanahan was dumped in favor of Art Shell in 1989.
With that in mind, the early-season lineup will be huge, as will how the Raiders handle it. In Norv Turner’s second year in 2005, the Raiders opened in New England, hosted Kansas City in Week 2 and then traveled to Philadelphia.
A difficult opening, but on the other hand, they were playing Eastern time zone games in September instead of December and came in with new acquisitions Randy Moss and LaMont Jordan, changing the offense and creating an air of mystery none of the three foes had at the time.
Instead of looking at it that way, there was no shortage of Raider grousing about having to face the conference champions on East Coast trips within the first three weeks of the season, sandwiched around a difficult division rival. Rather than look at it as an opportunity, Turner wore the look of a man who considered it a burden _ and when the Raiders were competitive but started 0-3, it was the beginning of the end.
Kiffin is already off to a good start. He gets Denver, a team he has already beaten in Oakland, on Monday night in Week 1. If you wanted top put together an order which would keep Kiffin safe and possibly send the Raiders to .500 and beyond, it might look something like this:
Week 2, at Miami: The Dolphins will be better than the team Justin Fargas shredded for 179 yards last year, but not much initially.
Week 3, Houston: The Texans couldn’t possibly beat the Raiders three times in a row in Oakland, could they?
Week 4, at Kansas City: Raiders won at Arrowhead last year with Daunte Culpepper at quarterback.
Week 5, at Buffalo: Back-to-back road games would be tough but still too early to be a frozen field for JaMarcus Russell.
Week 6, Atlanta: Last time Falcons were in Oakland, Raiders won 40-14 and were en route to a division title.
Week 7: Bye: Great time for a rest at which point the Raiders should be no worse than 4-2.
Week 8: New Orleans: Russell has just enough experience to get Louisiana excited about returning to the site of his Sugar Bowl destruction of Notre Dame for LSU.
If there is another anti-Raider diobolical plot to make sure Kiffin is ousted before midseason, the schedule could look something like this:
Week 2, at Tampa Bay: Think Monte Kiffin won’t know how to make life miserable for an inexperieced quarterback playing in a humidor?
Week 3, San Diego: Chargers have beaten the Raiders nine straight times and Shawne Merriman treats Kwame Harris like a turnstile in pursuit of Russell.
Week 4, at Baltimore: Rex Ryan has another defense which could choke off Oakland’s chances to run and not allow Russell a chance to get the ball to Walker or Carter.
Week 5, Bye: At no better than 1-3, with some potentially crushing losses, time for a week of rumors about Davis considering making a coaching change.
Week 6, New England: At this point, Bill Belichick won’t even need to go to the videotape.
Week 7, at Denver: Having possibly lost to the Raiders in Week 1, Shanahan senses the opportunity to finish off the Raiders for 2008.
Week 8, at New Orleans: Instead of the conquering hero returning to Louisiana, it is an error-prone, confused quarterback who is almost halfway into the longest season of his life.

April 14th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Neither of those schedule scenarios are likely to happen. Unless the NFL gives the Raiders two primetime spots back-2-back, the Raiders will be on the road for Weeks 2 and 3. The A’s have home games on Sunday afternoon for Week 2, leaving either SNF or MNF for a home game. Week 3, the A’s are at home on Sunday afternoon and have a night game on Monday. So look for two road games in 2 and 3.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Lefty 12…
great one, I too hope it never will happen =)
April 14th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Lol, ouch, that second scenario would be tough!
April 14th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Thec-as i said i was just being a smart ass.however, post 534-previous thread, you say-Al wants DM,Al will take DM.unless you’ve actually talked to him ,how do you know what he wants or what he will do?DO you really believe TT knows what he’s talking about.lol
April 14th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Doesnt matter what are schedule is. We go at a min 8-8.
Kiff stays.
We sweep the cooks.
We sweep the donks
We split SD.
again
Kiff stays
April 14th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
thanks LMN
April 14th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
It will probably be something between the two. Either way, the Raiders have an extremely soft schedule. If they want to make any great strides, this is the year to do it.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Lefty, My asumptions are not based on what TT has or hasnt said.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Thec Says:
April 14th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
I dont think anyone here is an “inside source”.
I also do not beleive anyone in the nation would say something like that knowing your job could be on the line.
All we have is speculation.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
.500 or better sounds great, hopefully no blackouts this year.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
after beating a hated rival on monday night at home, hopefully in a big way, ticet sales will go up, it’s important to start the season with a winning record, such as 4-2 or 5-1 in order to boost ticket sales, our sales for both ticket and merchandise sales may fall or rise 30-40% above or below the average based on our record, so it’ important that we win early
April 14th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
re post 13-i hope not!
April 14th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
it’s also important that we have players the whole world wants to see, such as russell and mcfadden, the revenue their jersey sales will bring in will be significant and the excitement they generate will draw the bandwagoners back and help out ticket sales and put more of our games on national TV, which, again, will help our revenue, and revenue is important, although it’s not something many of you worry about…
April 14th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
are we there yet?
April 14th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
what’s wrong lefty, don’t trust me, not that i care but i’m not making anything up….mcfadden is the pick
April 14th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
I hope the only silver and black McFadden jersey to be sold is your own home made jersey! =)
April 14th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
winning will put butts in the seats and bring back any bandwagon fans.winning will also help sell merchandise.winning cures all ills.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Tommy Trojan is the biggest blowhard, self-important know-it-all piece of crap I’ve ever seen on any blog of any kind.
If he knew so much, he wouldn’t be on this blog trying to impress everyone with his so-called “knowledge,” he’d have an actual job and a life. What a loser!
April 14th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
This blog is great place to talk NATION, but it is primariliy 3 things:
1. Speculation.
2. Assumption
3. Opinion.
Lefty, I just had a convo with AL, he told me he is taking DMAC with the 4th pick. He also asked me who the hell is lefty?
April 14th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
TT…
its just that there have been a lot of guys claiming they know something because they are affiliated with the franchise…
And because someone works for Raider Image does not mean you got the inside track…
But I like your views and in 2 tiny weeks we know if you was right, you’re definitely more on the inside track than I am =)
April 14th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Thec…
didn’t you say… “Mr. Davis, its the guy on the right =)
April 14th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
i don’t work t the raider image, although that is a division of our marketing department
April 14th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
TT,i don’t think you know any more than most people here.i don’t think you “know for sure” DM is the pick.unless you have spoken to AD and he told you so i don’t believe you,and even then i’d have my doubts.so you talk to people,so do others.it’s very possible you are being fed a line of bs because they know you’ll tell all.a sort of smokescreen as they say.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
LMN, LOL
April 14th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
an wizard, who am i trying to impress, someone asked a question, a harless question, i gave them an answer, i don’t care if they believe me…and i have a job, marketing for the oakland raiders, call me what you want, your opinion has no influence on me
April 14th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
i agree either way we go chris long, mcfadden, dorsey, excitement is up, are defense is goin to be flying to the ball hopefully Jamarcus can limit his mistakes, and amaze us with his arm every now and then, aint nothing like a sold out colisum opening games gonna be nutz i can feel the electricity already.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
LOL, This S#!t is toooo funny. Turing ito CIA type
S#!t. I am at work craking up right now. Lefty its not that serious. Lefty who do you work for?
1. Mossad
2. KGB
3. MI5, or MI6
This stuff is priceless, too funny, ROFLMAO.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Thec,i’m a nobody just like you.just a fan who likes to talk Raider football, just like you.the difference is i never say i KNOW what AD thinks or will do.nobody does, probably including himself until he does it.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
whose they…i have a friend in the personnel department, who i tailgate with, who speaks with mr. davis and claims, from davis’ mouth, that he has been told mcfadde is the pick, if he was willing to tell me such information, then it’s not top secret, classified information, so i have no problem telling others when asked, i’m not in a position to know key information and i trust that i would not be told such information…so i’m not worried about it
April 14th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Honey, I’m home! Tommy T’s right. If Kiff can get this team up and running (literally) from the start of camp, and we know he’s good at that - and we TAKE that first game against the Donks, then this WILL be an 8-8 year… or better. But winning early will be the key. We still have the same core guys from last year who basically folded their cards in the final 2-3 games. NATION is ONE!!
April 14th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Lefty12
My thought too, If you know you’re not picking McFadden you of course tell people you’d pick him =)
April 14th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Every one makes this draft to be CIA type stuff. I would bet that all the teams allready know what the other is going to do. The NFL is a “GAME” Period
April 14th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Here’s hoping for something more like that first schedule. Although, after playing at Miami early in the season last year, I’m thinking we might see them later in the season this year.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
everyone has already come to the conclusion mcfadden will be the pick, davis is unpredictable but over the years he has become so unpredictable that it’s safe to assume he’ll be unpredictable, many would predict that a predictable person would take a d-lineman in davis’ situation, but they know he likes athletes and superstars and predict that he would stray from the predictable path, that is how most come to the conclusion mcfadden will be the pick, the methodology is off but the conclusion is correct
April 14th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Listen, I don’t ever get into what the Raiders are gonna do on draft day. Anyone who knows the franchise knows only a fool would try! Hell, half of us were not even 100% sure Al would go for J-Russ this time last year!
April 14th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Does anyone on this blog honestly beleive that AL Davis does not tell his staff what he is going to do?
If you guys are under the impression that AL does not tell his staff HIS intentions you are smoking wacky tabacky. This is some funny S#!t though, having lots of fun today boys.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Thec-don’t you think AD operates like those agencies?no press conf.,closed practices,no spectators at training camp,ETC.every other team in the league offers access to it coaches and players.not the Raiders.everything is secretive.and now we’re supposed to believe AD leaked who he is going to select in the draft.come on.hell, even last year they tried to hide the fact they were taking JR.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Be right back, gonna get a sandwich…
April 14th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
ok theres no guarantee mcfadden will be there or that will pick him, who knows jerry jones my be willing to give up marion barber and 2 top picks for mcfadden, i’ll take that in a drop of a dime.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
when you want a smokescreen you tell people outside the organization what you are doing, when you know what you want to do and plan to do it you communicate such plans with your advisors and key members of your organization in a position to influence such a decision, this is not a smokescreen, although the perception that it is a smokescreen is essentially a smokescreen…it’s complicaed but then it’s not
April 14th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Where’s all the faith? Evidently Jerry isn’t taking into consideration that fact that we’ll have Jamarcus
Russell and his “awesome, rocket-arm” coupled with Dmac and Bush in the backfield. Our receiving core of
Walker, Carter, Curry & tight end Miller to scare the
living shit out of every defensive. And, those defenses
have to first deal with the play fake of the inside blast of Bush or the outside threat of Dmac or a pass to either Dmac or Bush in the flat, or getting burned deep with a 50 or 60 yard pass from JR, who can throe 80 yards if necessary! Hey, other than NE, we should run the table up to our bye week. Anything less and
I’ll be disappointed.
We’re going to the playoffs and you can put that in the bank. Anyone thinking any less should have their heads examined. Keep the faith and look at the facts.
It’s going to be a kick ass year…the writing is on the walls and it’s all about the get back when it comes to division teams. Don’t fear the Chargers, they have Norv Turner and that’s a guarenteed loser
the second year of his coaching.
To many people are coming to accept the last few years
as part for the course. Not so, stop being to negative. We have all the tools in place and it’s a done deal. GO RAIDERS!!!
April 14th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
not only did we know that russell would be the #1 pick last year but we also knew that miller would be the 2nd…and last year i didn’t even have to be told that, al davis is more predictable than most venture to guess
April 14th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
this predraft bluffing is all posturing, we have yet to see the flop which would be the top 3 picks, then we’ll know what where holding, till then its all preflop raises, sorry for the poker analogy.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
we know for a fact that the long brothers(i know and don’t care) will go 1 and 2 respectively one way or the other, and we know atlanta will either take ryan or dorsey, meaning mcfadden will be there and be the pick
April 14th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
If anyone claims to know what Al Davis is thinking I’ll be his head hurts.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
and a pool table, i say we talk jerry jones into shippin marion barber along with the 2 first rounders, it could happen.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Thec-btw,sorry for ruffling your feathers.i have no problem with people voicing their opinions or saying what they believe.i do have problems when people state opinions as facts, and i don’t mean to put you in that catagory.as i said i was being sarcastic and i was just joking around with you.i do see your reasoning for how you see us drafting and i think you are receptive to other scenerios, unlike some others on here.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
hahaha…that’s actually pretty true, i do have a headache, but i don’t claim to know what he IS thinking, i claim to know what he has been thinking…
April 14th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Right now Al is thinking “just about time for my 2:30 crapper”
April 14th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Comon’ dude you can’t know for “A FACT” that the Longs will go 1-2. Anything projected forward is alway subject.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Al Davis, is on the phone with mcfaddens agent, talking dollers baby.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
or on the phone wit jerry jones talking dollers baby haha.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
My daddy is talking to Mr. Jones but it itn’t about getting Barber. He wants T.O. and BOTH of his 1st rounders to give up on McFab.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Unlike most owners, Al’s thinking how can I get a Led Zepplin reunion in the parking lot?
April 14th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
the only other scenario is that gholston goes 1, jake long 2, dorsey or ryan 3, and mcfadden at 4, the nostalgia is overrated, even if c.long is there, which is highly unlikely, the pick will still be mcfadden, he’s #1 on the board regardless of who else is available
April 14th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Thank God the draft is only 12 days away. We’ll finally find out who our newest additions are and we can at that time resume the Rob Ryan love fest…..
April 14th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
tw, that sounds like an idea
April 14th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Lefty, you have not ruffled my feathers bro. I think all this “AL Davis conspiracy” stuff is quiet ammussing. Who shot John, or who knows what AL thinks makes the work day go by a little faster. When I say ROFLMAO my co workers are giving me strange looks coz i am indeed laughing my ass off.
Hey If I worked for Rand I probable would know what AL thinks.
Lets reel it back in and keep the main thing the main thing. We all want to win, and lets hope whatev thinks and does is in the best interest of the team, and us getting to the SB in 3.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
that makes sense… tommy T i would like to see are draft board
April 14th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
and we can at that time resume the Rob Ryan love fest…..
I’ll bet Dakota will be up for that! lol
April 14th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I’d love to see them play Kashmir before the Donkey mon. night game.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
if rob ryan gives up over 150 running yards opening day i say we charge the field and shave his head.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
btw TT,do you commute to Oakland every day?
April 14th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
The only board that DMC shoud be #1 on belongs to the Jets. They can take the next Ricky Williams and suffer for the next 5 years wondering why they listened to Mel Krapper and the other draft idiots. There is a reason that he didn’t win the H-man two years in a row.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
i’ve always preferred Trampled Under Foot, Kashmire isn’t my favorite but it’s a great song, like most of their songs…
April 14th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
I’m just curious as to what the team is gonna do with 3DEs on the roster and suspect DTs by picking McFadden? I’m curious as all hell. Unless they’re going to somehow trade back into the top of the 2nd or something. But seriously. Only 3DEs and suspect DTs? Thats not a good enough. What good to great DE are you gonna find in the 5th?
April 14th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
All this draft talk is entertaining and nothing more. I hate to speculate because of the affect the draft has on the make up of the entire team.
What 53 make the roster? What will the injury situation be when the preseason is over? Who will step his game up a notch? IMO, these are the more important questions.
It still will come down to players performing, coaches coaching, traininer training, etc, etc, etc.
I will be excited no matter who we pick at #4 unless it is another CB…
April 14th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
he didnt win the heisman because outside of himself and felix jones, his team is horrible and a QB on an undefeated national contender is always the default winner, and a QB with 20 qb sneaks comming off a NC win is also a hot commodity, but very few would debate he has been the best player in CFB the last two years
and left, i fly north about twice a month, i don’t have enough time to drive back and forth, and if i did, i would save the time and still fly, but i’m down hear in socal and don’t work in the 1220 offices
April 14th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Fabian,
Only if the razor is really dull and really rusty!
April 14th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
will use darth vaders sword
April 14th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
terrapin, we have solid rotational options along the DL and all of our DTs are adequate starters, we will likely get a 3rd for washington and will spent at least one draf pick on a DE and a DT, we can find depth/rotational options for burgess and we can get someone like okam in the 4th, hel, richardson is an arguably adequate starter and he was a 5th rnd pick, you don’t give our DL enough credit and you’re overlooking that we have more than one draft pick, the mid-late picks are very important
April 14th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
There’s no secret CIA info that leads one to believe that DMac will be the pick. It’s just called simple common sense.
Regardless of what we may think, bottom line is that Al Davis just dumped tens of millions into the position that Dorsey and Ellis would play if they were to be drafted. So most likely they’re not gonna be the pick. If Chris Long isn’t available,(and there is good reason to believe that he will NOT last until the fourth pick), then common sense dictates that Al Davis will spend that pick on an exciting, electrifying, touchdown making player, i.e. Mcfadden.
It’s not rocket science, it’s just common sense speculation based on the moves Davis has slready made so far. Tommy Trojan, keep doing you. Don’t listen to the haters on here. Your opinion is no less valid than any body else’s on this forum.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
TT,
He didn’t win the Heisman because he wasn’t that impressive. When 2 RB’s on the same team both rush for more tne 1500 yards, its the line just as much as it is them. Being on a bad team made it easier for him to stand out. He didn’t. Therefore he didn’t win the award. Its for the best college FOOTBALL player, not best QB. The year that Woodson won it there were a couple of good QB’s as well, but a defender still won.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
ok i’ve noticed a trend, the mcfadden supporters seem to outlast all the others, indicating we are dedicated to our team, aka bring in mcfadden.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
NOT winning the Heisman is a reason to pick a RB.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Kush…
nobody said his opinion wasn’t valid…
April 14th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
woodson was on a good team which allowed him to take credit for the team being good, and jones never had 1500 yds, the line was a product of the system and the system was a product of mcfadden, as was nearly every win that team has had over the last two and half years, there is a reason he is almost universally considered the best player in college football and the best player in this draft…because he is
April 14th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Kush,
Commonsense and McFadden haters do not go hand in hand, so I can see why they are in denial of what AD is likely to do.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
All I’m saying is that he is overrated. plain and simple. With all of his problems he won’t be around long enough to matter to the team. He will be suspended Rodger before his rookie season is over. IF he can get signed before its over. He reminds me of Ricky Williams or the Donks flop from last year who is now in prison.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
amen dakota
April 14th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
how will he be suspended, he’s never broken the law
April 14th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
or at least hasn’t been caught…
April 14th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Further common sense…Al Davis also looks at matters in a way that most of us don’t…the BUSINESS side. The Raiders are a business, first and foremost.
Winning does generate into dollars, yes, but that’s not the only factor. Mcfadden and Chris Long, will sell tickets, jerseys, and other merchandise, period! That translates into revenue and profit for the Raider organization. Sorry guys but J. Long, Ellis, Dorsey, or Gholston, will not have that kind of financial impact upon the Raiders.
If Al Davis believes that he can assemble a winning team and at the same time draft either of the two players that have the potential to be the two biggest revenue generating players in the past few years, then COMMON SENSE and ECONOMICS dictate that either C. Long or D. Mcfadden will be Al Davis’ likely choice in the draft.
It doesn’t take inside connections to figure that out.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Let some other team throw money at his baby’s mama’s.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I’d be willing to bet that if we draft that Arkansas RB, McSomethingorother, he will not be the only Oakland Raider with illegitimate kids, lol.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
I was convinced that we were taking DMAC. After today I am even more convince we are taking him.
DMAC = #32.

mcfadden doesn’t do drugs, has never been in legal trouble, and is a stand-up, respected locker room presence…you are generalizing too much, you’re saying that because he has alot of sex and that the police spoke with him after he defended his younger brother that he is a criminal who is prone to be arrested multiple times…he’s a good character guy, and anyone who has seriously looked into mcfadden can tell you that, as i am doing now, you havn’t evaluated mcfadden, you seen a few games, read scouting reports, and watched youtube highlights, that’s a ridiculou basis for an opinion and does not stand up to a thorough job of scouting…you are entitle to your opinion as everyone is, every opinion is valid, but some are more valid than others, and those who make general, sweeping statements about another person without knowing, or even attempting to know, the neccesary facts, do not have wholely valid opnion and are meant to be taken with a significantly large, or small as the case may be, grain of salt…

April 14th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
in that case, sign him!!!!!! I just don’t want 5 more years of crap on the field. I realize the “business” side of the pick. I have 2 JR jersey’s in my closet. Next to the Fargas, Jordan, Garner, Woodson, and Moss. (some have been slighlty altered) I will have to see how his progression goes before he makes it to the side with Plunkett,Jackson, Allen, Long, Townsend, Christensen, Brown, Lott, and Rice.
IF DMC is the pick, I hope with the rest of the Nation that he can produce. I just fear throwing Millions at a kid with problems isn’t going to make him better. It only makes the problems bigger.

there are at least 20 teams in teh league who would upgrade by drafting mcfadden

He has been in trouble. Just because he wasn’t busted for a fight, doesn’t mean that he has a spotless record. It took Jamal Lewis a couple of years for all of his problems to come the surface. DMC runs with a group like Taylor used to. We all saw how that turned out. They need to go draft a good Mormon boy from BYU insted of taking a wanna be thug like DMC.

Didn’t we draft some BYU o-lineman in the 90s, who ended up not wanting to play on Sundays??? What was his name?

san diego has taken a step back and we have taken huge steps forward, they appear to be a 11-13 win team, we appear to be a 8-10 win team, 3 games is not a lightyear, 5 games would be bad but we can beat san diego, we probably won’t win the division but we can compete for a playoff spot, we are not far behind
April 14th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Kiffin has to love that his future is in Rob Ryan and Al Davis’ less-than-capable hands. Al is in charge of defense via Ryan? Wow. Last year the D stank. This off-season the D has made two upgrades in its strongest area - DB.
DL - No upgrade. Resigned a guy we hope will go from above average to pro bowler over the course of one knee injury. Replaced 8 sacks in part-time Clemmons with Edwards (only the completely optomistic would call this breaking even. It is not an upgrade.)
If Tommy Kelly becomes the next Warren Sapp as predicted in the three technique, we will have hmmmm….The EXACT SAME DL as last year
Burgess - Sands - Sapp II (aka TK) - Richardson
combined with our can’t tackle LB corps we left unchanged. Hopefully Wilson can tackle RB’s after 7 yard gains better than Stu did.

La Milicia Negra Says:

TT, I agree with your last post. I also beleive we should sweep the donks, and the cooks.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
The D-line will be better. It is impossible for it to be worse. This is Ryan’s last chance to prove he can do something. The last couple of years our Pass D has been stellar, run D has been non-exsistant. When both lines are as productive as a turnstile, it gets no worse. Therefore, by default, this years line will be better, Right?

it was a joke, TT seemed to paint a picture of McFadden being a saint…I just upped the ante =)
April 14th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
COW your overlooking that kelly is a far superior run stopper to sapp, and that burgess is healthy, last years DL was clemons, sapp, warren/sands, richardson, this year’s DL will be burgess, kelly, warren/sands, richardson/edwards, there is a big difference, you must factor in that we can now crowd the box consistently with 8-9 defenders and that we finally have a S who can stop the run, also you must take into account the offense’s improvement will have on the defense and that we will add at least two more d-lineman before the season starts
April 14th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
RaiderTW
Ya but he would have less wind resistance when running
April 14th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
SD has a very soft schedule too. So does Den and KC for that matter. Herm Edwards is a franchise killer and should have the Chefs in the cellar this year. SD rolled last year after Norv figured out to get out of LT’s way. That basically leaves us and Denver battling for the 2-3 spots. The opening game would be a huge step in th right direction.

there’s no question that we are a superior team to DEN and KC, it’s just a matter of how the variables(injuries, acquisitions, schedule structuring, bad calls, etc. etc.) factor in
April 14th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
We got rid of Dante’s fumbling hmmm. So now the O can move the ball. JR should be somewhat more productive than DC. Just a little of an improvment will be a big help to a defense that spent too much time on the field. That doesn’t mean that LT won’t stil torch them should he shake off his injury. But we wont have to watch Stu miss multiple 1-on-1 tackles this year. Maybe Huff can stay upright on the goal line insted of doing his best impersionation of a bull fighters cape and bouncing to the side when LT hits him.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

The peaces are in Place and dont think that Al is finished yet!!
They always count him up and he always bounces back.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
it’s not RR that won’t blitz, Al doesn’t like to blitz…so we don’t blitz
April 14th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
TT -
1) Burgess has had TWO healthy seasons in his career. It’s far safer to assume he will miss time. Smarter too.
2) Kelly needs to ACTUALLY be a better run stopper than Sapp was - not just be proclaimed one. Not to say he won’t be good but Kelly has done nothing in his career to date to assume much. BONUS - I gave that Kelly cvould be an upgrade.
3) We routinely stacked the box last year. Huff and Stu missed tackles near the line because we were stacking the box. Oh and teams still ran because they knew their 6-7 guys could handle our 9 easy.
4) Injuries are a funny thing on here. Kelly - no problem. Dorsey - oh no! Joseph - He’ll be great, M Bush - don’t count on it. Burgess will be healthy but Fargas is going to get hurt. Funny what we choose to ignore.
All this assuming is what we did right before last season. The D couldn’t stop the run in 2006 either in terms of yards per carry.
Address the defense if we want to win.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
We will find out tomorrow that the NFL is sticking it to the Raiders after giving them a prime time game to start the season. (prime time to us on the west coast, everyone else will long be in bed) The Raiders will open at home then spend 3 weeks on the road, come home to play the Chargers and maybe the Texans (whom they have never beat?) Then its off for a game aginst the Ravens and Buc’s before the bye. JR will be warmed up to the game speed, Fargas will be on the IR, Bush and Rhodes will have more then 600 combined yards and JR will be somewere around 1900 yards with 10 TD’s and 6 int’s.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Jerry Mac,…each blog you post inly proves to me that you now have zero contacts on the island,..truth be told I could write a better blog then you as you know I have at least two on the island in high places,…(not Artie)…my dog Rusty could comeup with a silly blog of how a schedule could work out,..man Jerry, did you think about that subject long?…hope not…Jerry, why get your hands dirty for once, go to the island, demand to see someone with insider knowledge…get a disgruntled staffer,..even if its just a PR person…and the prior two blogs, Q & A`s from two draftees that you didnt even interview?…is this what its come to Jerry?…Jerry, for a guy who is considered a beat writer, you know nothing of the team you cover. Try harder Jerry,…do a better job.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
If Kelly comes a sadvertised then we will do better against the run. It has been stated before we spent a lot of money on the D so they should be almost set. I would like us to pick up spikes, or trotter.
I watched all of the SD games as i Live in SD, the teams that beat SD stacked the box and dared rivers to beat them. rivers in my mind is a backup QB. Anyway my point is they shut LT down. Why cant we stack the box and do the same? Every down rivers would be facing an all out something. I know we dont blitz, but we need to be a little more less predictable. Seems like we are running a “prevent” no gambling allowed. I know we are not just seems like that.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

April 14th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Stephen ” a big help to a defense that spent too much time on the field”
REALLY?
The Raiders won time of possession last year. Keep hearing this “tired D” garbage. How the heck do you get a halftime and watch the O for twenty minutes of real time drive down the field and after basically an hour off get rolled over? Tired? No - you stink. Bad ownership insisting on bad scheme and bad coaching with poor talent. Not “Tired”.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

COW, the team was good at stopping the run in 2006….when our DL was healthy
April 14th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
COW,
I agree 100%…so why waste another pick on defense when AD and RR will just mess things up anyhow?
April 14th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
our D gave up 4yds/att in 2006 while being supjec to 30+carries a game, that’s solid D, take an improved D from that time period and you have an improved run D, but again you should read my previous posts…
April 14th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
if stopping the run is the only way to win football games, as so many claim, then why does the team that was by far the best run stopping team in the NFL(Ravens;2.8yds/att; 1st) have a top 10 pick and only one more win than we had while the team(Patriots;4.4yds/att;26th) that lost just one game all year and was just one play away from being universally considered the greatest team/dynasty in the history of football was also one of the worst teams at stopping the run
there is more than one way to win football, our defense is not built like the jaguars’ in that we can bully our opponents with an overpowering defense and keep our offense on the field with power running and game management passing in order to keep our defense fresh, our defense is built like the colts, with a smaller defensive line built to rush the passer and a LB core built to run in open space and play sideline-to-sideline, our DBs are built to cover in wide open field and be great in coverage, our D is built to play the pass our problem is not that we cannot play defense, it’s that we cannot play defense our way, one defensive lineman will not change the structure of our defense, we must force our opponent to pass so that we can take advantage of our strengths, how do you force an opponent to pass? there are two ways; you can stop the run, which is not something our D is built to do on a consistent basis, although we are not as terrible at it as you may believe, the other method is to score points and force your opponent to keep up with you, score enough points that the opponent can not take the long and arguous road of grinding down the field, they must score points in a hurry, they must pass, which is something that can not be easilly accomplished against this defense, especially considering the recent additions to our defensive backfield
our team does have a blue print, we have a young talented QB with unequalled potential, he is not a game-management QB, he is a QB designed to score points, like a young culpepper or a manning, we have a good TE, one who is comparable to todd heap or jason witten or dallas clark, a good blocker and a very good reciever, we have a good, versatile power back, we have a solid OL that is drastically improving, we have a good possession reciever, we have a respectable starter at the #1 WR position, we have a decent slot option, our offense has potential but right now is only average, we must score points and to do so it is neccesary to have an explosive player, we have several good players, but mcfadden would automatically be the best offensive player on our team and one of the best in the league at his position, having a great QB(which we think we have) takes reasure off the running game and opens holes along the line of scrimage, having a great RB takes pressure off of the QB and opens holes in the secondary, when you have both then there is always a hole in the defense and you can score points, forcing opponents to do the same, which is extremely difficult to o against our defense, drafting mcfadden is not just about reaching/exceeding .500 next year, it’s about building the foudation for one of the best offenses in the NFL, which is what we had when we last went to the superbowl, and what has allowed the colts and patriots to be the dominant football powerhouses throughout this decade, the league has evolved and it requires points, something mcfadden can give us

AI - You prove daily you don’t know what you’re talking about.
1 - You were wrong about almost every prediction you announced this offseason. Bouldin? A magic 8 ball has a higher success rate.
2 - If you can do better than Jerry - do it! Anybody can start up a blog. A free one too. Sell ads on your insightful blog - make money. Best of all, no more reason for you to be on here.
3 - People who offer their opinions and stand behind them without trying to justfy them with childish “insider” claims gain more respect. Shoot, I think I’ll vomit if I read any more DMAC hype but I respect the people who make a case for him. People who just claim to have some scoop only sound foolish.

April 14th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
If it keeps Stu off the field, it helps the Raiders. Therefore the D spent too much time on the field. Never said they were tired. They couldn’t tackle. The offence couldn’t finish. When they would drive, Culprit would fumble, Gallery would false start or hold someone, Culprit would throw a pass 5 yards behind poopers slow whole. They were a bad finisher. Time and time again, they couldn’t finish. That comes with being terrible for so long with no coaching. It will take time to heal those wounds and move on. Hopefully, the improvment that they had last year will carry over and they can improve from that.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

This is my repost for you, please understand, Atlanta will not take DMAC.
They will draft a lineman, guess?
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
RaiderDell Says:
April 14th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Atlanta with the new GM and Coach from Jacksonville scream of a lineman with their respective backgrounds.
The bloggers here continue to say they could draft DMAC:
Here is why they don’t, they recently signed Michael Turner and have as his immediate back up Jerious Norwood.
I don’t see any need there, in fact Jerious Norwood played very well when then Falcon Warrick Dunn was injured last season.
Atlanta will take a lineman, their roster includes John Abraham as a RDE, they need help with Rashard Moore in the DT position.
Atlanta is carefully looking at Dorsey, Jake Long, or Clady.
Ryan the Qb is too expensive and most scouts and draft personnell feel you can find a good to great QB in the second round.
My position is by the best odds to be our pick at number 4 is DMAC, C. Long, Gholsten, and Ellis.

April 14th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
TT -
Our 16th ranked run D in 2006 wasn’t as BAD but we need to upgrade the line for other reasons as well. In 2006 Burgess and Sapp alone got 26 sacks. Last year we barely got that as a team. Our corners can’t cover indefinately and our LB’s are Phillip Buhanon type cover men. (An INT for a TD and 15 passes allowed)
If Burgess stays healthy he is gone next year. Kelly has no starter quality DT to play next to him. Sands and Warren are role players at best. Richardson looks promising but he is hardly a pro bowler.
We also have nobody at SLB. Williams? Please.
We have put tools in place to win games but all oppoenents have to do is run-run-run. Why pass at our corners if you can just run or pass to RB’s and TE’s? No need to keep RB’s or TE’s in to block - the Raiders have no pass rush.
There are other ways to win but stopping the run goes a long way. Consider the 12 playoff teams - none of them were ranked lower than 17th in total rushing allowed. It is obviously a key element of a playoff team. One element we lack.

Does anyone think JR has talked to AD’s puppet RR about Dorsey yet? Or do you guys feel he would rather have more help on the other side of the ball?

I have plans in place to go to New Orleans for that game, I’m just waiting for the schedule tomorrow to firm up Hotel and airline tickets.
I hope it will be fun, lots of fun.

Thec - Sorry lost my voice of reason there. IIt happens about once a year pre-draft. lol
April 14th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
NFL network punk scheifert just said the Donks added WR Sammy Parker………Way to replace Walker….hahahahahahahaahaha
April 14th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Does anyone besides me think thats the Raiders could possibly take Ryan Clady. He is a highly rated ZBS Tackle.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
he pats were 26th in run defense and lost just one game, if w can score points the D will produce, and players can be decent starters without being pro bowlers, pro bowlers means they are one of the best at their positions such as burgess, morrison, howard, hall, and nnamdi, and huff and wilson arn’t far off
April 14th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Terry - The Raiders open at home with Denver on the big Thursday night hoopla.
Jerry meant Miami in week 2 in his scenario.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Like I’ve said before, the Raiders DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT pick luxury players with the first pick. The Oakland Raiders only pick for NEED with their first pick. If you think they don’t, go back and look at who the Raiders have drafted, and who they “could” have drafted. All you DMC lovers are smokin’. I challenge anybody who disputes me on this to prove me wrong. Don’t get me wrong, D-MAC is a great player, but Al does not “double load” positions.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Dell,
Take lots of bug spray. They are HUGE in LA. Made the mistake of spending part of ‘06 summer down there……..YUCK. Still want to go to MG though. Can anyone say Nation gone wild?
April 14th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
TT - Okay yes if we can have the highest scoring offense in league history our run defense only has to improve by .5 yards per carry. I’ll give you that.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
TT - Notice how you kept using the word “adequate” on #76 referencing the Dline. Well talking adequate about a defense doesn’t win you Superbowls bro. Nor do high profile RBs.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I’m sure the New Orleans game won’t be until November.
Let’s get lucky, and be in NO near Halloween.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I’d be the creapy old guy stumbling around
April 14th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
true, but we’re not talking about winning the SB next year, we’re talking about having a winning record, there’s a big difference, just like there’s a big difference between terrible and adequate…
April 14th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
I’m still waiting for Jano to show he was worth the 1st round pick. I would have given him that title had he hit that 60+ yard kick last year. If he would stop drinking before the games his accuracy would probibly improve.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Lets start a petiton to get Barret Robins out of jail to help shore up the O line.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
there will always be good lineman on the first day of every draft, you act as though if we pass on dorsey or long, who will both be gone, or gholston or ellis, that we will be terrible, and we will not, we will be .500 at worst, 10-6 at best, and can add lineman late in the draft this year and on day one next year, but we will likely not be in a situation to draft a player of mcfadden’s caliber for a long time…which is why we are taking him
April 14th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
The Raiders could draft Clady but I doubt they will at #4. There is just too many other options at that point. If they trade down sure. Jake Long will almost certainly go either to Miami or the Rams. That means no matter who Atlanta takes at #3 the Raiders will see at worst their #3 defensive lineman still on the board Chris Long, Dorsey, Ellis, or Ghoulston. If Ryan or DMAC somehow go before #4 the Raiders will have their pick of at least three of these guys.
Just don’t see it.
Chris Williams of Vandy is as good as Clady in pass blocking and could be there in the 2nd if Oakland gets a pick via trade.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
IF Miami is dealing Taylor ship them Fab, Stu, or Stan. Miami gets help, we get help, nuf said. He is on the down side of his career, so he fits right in.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Gosh damnit. The Broncos are trying to sign Vanderjagt, the most accurate kicker in NFL history. Why? With that thin air, he just might be even better. I don’t like it at all.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Now i Know Davis is picking gholston if he is there
Because he didnt go out and got DeAngelo Hall and just dont give the secondary chances to make plays, no way we are going with richardson as our starting RDE, no way!! Either Gholston or C Long, but it has to be one of them
Cause what if edwards or richardson get injured, then u have to put Kelly playing DE and u want him to blossom as the 3 down DT!
April 14th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Fish……J. Long
Goats…..DMC (wishful thinking I know)
Crows…..Ryan
Raiders…Cream of the crop to pick from or Trade down and get back into the 2/3 rounds. Pick up LB Rivers or DT Ellis. Either way they go USC.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Its definately nice to hear that the Dolphins have only negotiated with Jake Long. Please let it be so. They better come up with an agreement soon.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
he’s been cut twice in the last year because he had a mental breakdown and sinc hasn’t been able to hit the broad side of a barn…they’re the only ones interested because they have no K and can’t find one, it’s actually pretty funny
April 14th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
good i’ve seen elam kick to many game winning field goals
April 14th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Bro if you’re not building to win the Superbowl then why the hell would you play the game? These excuses to justify picking McFadden are at the height of absurdity.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
J. Long has the same agent as another of the top prospects in the draft. I think it is VG but I won’t swear to it. Does anyone know for sure?
April 14th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Tommy T STOP IT!! just stop it. I was scared that we would go CJ and I knew how they felt about Russell. Of course I had no idea we would eventually get Dante
You NEVER know until you know. As of right now things could be changing there is no way to KNOW for sure.
Things normally get settle more the last 2-3 days before but when they’re in that room and coaches are still fighting for their side of the ball, Who knows what will happen.

Coach on Wheels Says:
Terry - The Raiders open at home with Denver on the big Thursday night hoopla.
*****
Nope, the Raiders open at home with Denver on the big MONDAY night hoopla (the second game of the double-header
