No excuse for a slow start

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008 at 12:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Maybe they’ll be shouting “conspiracy” in Denver this year.

Either it was the luck of the draw, or someone in the NFL agrees with John Madden’s long-held belief that the NFL is a better league when Oakland is good, because the first seven weeks of the 2008 schedule were placed in front of the Raiders as if it were a baseball on a batting tee in front of Alex Rodriguez.

There’s no such thing as an easy game for a team coming off a 4-12 season and in a five-year abyss of 19-61, but if the Raiders were to draw up their own scenario as to how to get off to a fast start and put embattled coach Lane Kiffin and second-year quarterback JaMarcus Russell on good footing, they couldn’t have done much better what transpired.

Of their first seven opponents, the Raiders play exactly one team that had a winning record in 2007 _ the San Diego Chargers (11-5), visit Oakland in Week 4.

The Raiders open the season with two teams they beat last year at the same places they beat them _ the Monday night opener against Denver (7-9) at the Coliseum, and a Week 2 assignment at Kansas City (4-12).

In Week 3, the Raiders visit Buffalo (7-9) _ getting the Bills in September instead of a dreaded East Coast game in the snow.

After hosting San Diego in Week 4, Oakland visits New Orleans (7-9) on Oct. 12 and then hosts the New York Jets (4-12).

Oakland’s first six opponents had a .417 winning percentage last season (40-56).

If the Raiders can’t open at at least .500 with that schedule, they could be looking at another double-figures season in terms of losses, because three of their last four games of the season will be against San Diego on a Thursday night (Dec. 4), New England, and a season-ender at Tampa Bay (Dec. 28).

And you know Al Davis isn’t thinking .500. If Kiffin goes 2-4 or worse with these first six games, he may as well hand his headset to James Lofton.

The only division opponent with an easier schedule than the Raiders through Week 7 is San Diego, which counts New England as the 2007 playoff team, with the other six opponents combining for a .312 winning percentage (30-66).

Kansas City’s opposition through Week 7 was 48-48 last season, with New England and Tennessee having made the playoffs.

Denver, meanwhile, has a schedule which could put the heat squarely on Mike Shanahan before midseason. If the Broncos lose in Oakland in Week 1, things could get ugly. Denver faces playoff teams in four of the next six games (San Diego, Tampa Bay, at Jacksonville, and New England) and its opponents have a .554 winning percentage (.554).

The only game with a potential bad weather issue is Nov. 23 in Denver, as the Raiders play their two December road games in San Diego and Tampa Bay.

Oakland has back-to-back road games only twice (Sept. 14-21, Kansas City-Buffalo, and Nov. 16-23, Miami-Denver), four opponents who don’t figure to be imposing and had losing records last year.

A difficult road assigment in Baltimore is followed up by consecutive home games Nov. 2 and Nov. 9 against Atlanta and Carolina, with the Falcons game serving as DeAngelo Hall’s first game against his former team.

The week after the Raiders host New England, they get an opportunity to get better against Houston, although the Texans have managed to win the last two games in Oakland.

The bottom line is there is no sense of dread with this schedule, only one of opportunity.

If the Raiders don’t capitalize, they’ll have no one but themselves to blame.

Repo Man - Why are you so worried about Kiffin getting fired?

If he is half the coach you think he is, you have nothing to worry about.

Don’t worry so much. Life is too short.

You’re already a RELIC OF THE PAST.

’ll only forgive Al for firing Kiffin if he goes out and gets another Gruden type.- Madden Raider

    Seek help immediately.

    ………….

Seek help, for what? Concerned that a team that’s 19-61 will still continue to have issues is a sign of mental dementia? More like the other way around, bud. It’s the people who think we’re back on top…because we signed Javon Walker and Kwame Harris..who need a little time on the couch.

How does wanting a Gruden type coach make me a relic of the past? Newsflash, genius: The last successful team we had was built by Gruden. Yeh, how nostalgic I am to want to see that again. Kool Aid drinkers like you go back 40 f’n years to justify the nonsense Al is pulling off today, and you’re going to call me out for going back 7 years?

Oh, I agree, life is short. And, I’m not worried. If our head coach in ‘09 isn’t Lane Kiffin, or at least a Lane Kiffin/Jon Gruden type, I’m done. No worries here. I’ll have a swell time laughing at the Raiders and the kool aid drinking idiots who think Norv Lofton or Norv Knapp will get this team beyond 2 wins. I predict our first 0-16 season ever. Nationally televised, simulcasted on every station, like the Pats bid for 16-0. The world will watch the Raiders make history…and become the worst team to ever take the field in the history of the National Football League.

I’m not worried at all about Kiffin being fired. Just giving the company a clear ultimatum; That if Kiffin is gone after this year, this consumer is taking his dollar elsewhere, and I know I wont’ be alone.

Enjoy the suckage, Bill Pickel. And how dare you name yourself after a Ron Wolf guy who was on one of our great teams? You should be calling yourself Alvis Whitted. That moniker better fits the type of player and system you shill for.

  13. La Milicia Negra Says:

I still dont believe he would have a chance, like Lieberman never would have a chance… But you’re right it is a great country, here we have right now have 7 muslims in our parliament, of its 175 chairs ASFAICR. there are 5% muslims in DK and 7 seats represent 12% so there are no bias here neither…I still don’t think a Muslim president candidate in the US would have a chance, perhaps before 9/11 but not now perhaps after a Obama or a Hillary or McCain term…

  14. Repo Man Says:

Last game vs. Tampa…The NFL is having fun again. They know there’s a possibility that L. Kiffin will be a Tampa Bay assistant by that time, and be on their sideline as the Bucs absolutely crush Norv Lofton and his flying Raiders.

  15. Tommy Trojan Says:

right now these predictions are tentative but very possible:

    Week 1 : Sept. 8 (Mon.) Denver Broncos 7:15 p.m.-W

Week 2: Sept. 14 at Kansas City Chiefs 10 a.m.-W

    Week 3: Sept. 21 at Buffalo Bills 10 a.m.-W

    Week 4: Sept. 28 San Diego Chargers 1:05 p.m.-W

    Week 5: Oct. 5 Bye

Week 6: Oct. 12 at New Orleans Saints 10 a.m.-L

    Week 7: Oct. 19 New York Jets 1:15 p.m.-W

    Week 8 Oct. 26 at Baltimore Ravens 10 a.m.-W

    Week 9: Nov. 2 Atlanta Falcons 1:15 p.m.-W

    Week 10: Nov. 9 Carolina Panthers 1:05 p.m-W.

    Week 11: Nov. 16 at Miami Dolphins 10 a.m.-W

    Week 12: Nov. 23 at Denver Broncos 1:05 p.m.-W

    Week 13: Nov. 30 Kansas City Chiefs 1:15 p.m.-W

Week 14 Dec. 4 (Thurs.) at San Diego Chargers 5:15 p.m.-L

    Week 15 Dec. 14 New England Patriots 1:15 p.m.-L

    Week 16 Dec. 21 Houston Texans 1:05 p.m.-W

Week 17 Dec. 28 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers 10 a.m.-L

that’s a possibly 12-4 record; not that i really care what the media `thinks but by week 14 we could legitimately be 11-1, what would BSPN have to say then? i won’t bet the farm on this record because the broncos could in theory steal another one with ref intervention, the chargers could sweep us and we could end up .500 in the division, and we have yet to actually beat the texans since they have been in the NFL, so that could be a 9-7 record and giving and taking a few games, interchanging W’s and L’s based on changes between now and then and we could end up 8-8 at worst, but as it now stands we should be at least 9-7 with an outside shot at the division at 12-4, although to clarify, i’m predicting 9 or 10 wins

This is not a great country, it’s a work in progress. Stolen land, one ethnicity enslaved for 300 years with no reparations, just an apology by a former president, and even that was criticized by self proclaimed “patriots”.

And, Hillary Clinton is going to be our next President. She’ll be the first female Republican president this country has ever had, despite calling herself a democrat.

  19. Howitzer Says:

If Kiffin does end up getting fired, and Lofton does end up as the head coach, the silver (and black) lining is that Repo Man promised to stop following the Raiders and not come back here any more.

  20. KD Says:

  22. KD Says:

Don’t see you leaving in protest. lol!!!

  23. Raiderkoolaid Says:

If The Raiders aren’t better this year they can’t blame the schedual makers. If they are just a little better team than last year they should be able to go 8-8 with this schedual. If they are considerably better, then 10 or 12 wins is not out of reach. Looking at SD’s schedual, anything less than 12 wins for them should be a disappointment. I hope they disappoint. Of course the teams that were week last year will may not be this year.

  24. Repo Man Says:

Why should I walk know, KD? Kiffin’s still here. As long as Al Bundy is making some kind of realistic effort to make this team good, I’ll be around. But I’m not giving him another chance. One more Norv Shell Bugel type, and I’m out. Give me all the guilt trips you want. I’ve got a tiny violin to play for you.

  25. KD Says:

JaMarcus in…McCowen out. We are better.

  26. southflraiderfan Says:

  27. Repo Man Says:

  28. Oakglenn Says:

Anyone who threatens to no longer be a fan, is already gone.

  29. Tommy Trojan Says:

looking at the schedule, the broncos will likely be 4-12 to 6-10, the chiefs will be somewhere between 4-12 and 1-15(i don’t say 0-16 because that’s actually HARD to do), and the chargers somewhere between 10-6 and 14-2, while we will be somewhere between 8-8 and 12-4

so the division at the end of the year could look like:

    1.Chargers 11-5 to 14-2
    2.Raiders 8-8 to 10-6
    3.Broncos 4-12 to 6-10
    4.Chiefs 1-15 to 4-12

which is probably the likely scenario

    OR:

    1.Raiders 11-5 to 12-4
    2.Chargers 10-6
    3.Broncos 4-12 to 6-10
    4.Chiefs 1-15 to 4-12

again, i believe the former is more likely, and nearly certain, although there are some variables that i don’t have the oportunity to factor in, thus the general ranges

  30. KD Says:

You are putting all your loyalty based around some kid with a year in the NFL. Nice. This is the first year in some time that Al Davis has been actively making oves himself. Looks like things are at least happening. He sold part of the team and put almost all of the cash into team. Gruden didn’t build that team alone either. Al cuts all of the checks.

  31. Repo Man Says:

Where am I supposed to go to, KD? England? I was born and raised here. Doesn’t mean I have to be a dumb, blind, kool aid drinking idiot with a Dale Earnheardt hat. What’s so wrong with wanting to do what’s morally right? Leaving is not the only form of protest there is. With the Raiders, it’s simple. I’ve got nothing to lose by leaving them. But with America, it’s not so easy. My whole family is here. But it doesn’t mean I have to support every criminal, evil thing this country has done. I don’t know where you flag waving idiots got the idea that in order to be patriotic, you have to support the wrong things that your country does.

  32. southflraiderfan Says:

Painfully watched the Snowball game last night in New England. How in the hell did we lose that game. We dominated the Patriots until the last 8 minutes or so. I would love to see us go out in this game with a win. Randy who?

Thats the money statement. Well said.

  34. Oakglenn Says:

It’s hard to predict an outcome of 32 teams in a league where injuries play such an important part of the outcome, but the Raiders HAVE to start strong. Which unfortunately, is not a traditional Raider triat. Traditionally the Raiders start slowly and build.

  35. southflraiderfan Says:

Tommy Trojan, I agree. I am seeing us either 9-7 or 10-6. Im an optimist, so 10-6 and in the playoffs!

  36. Repo Man Says:

KD, I’ve put all of my loyalty into this team for 30 years, now. I don’t rap all of my loyalty around Lane kiffin. I made it clear, if Al hires another Kiffin/gruden type, someone who will not be a puppet and do whatever it takes to build a winning team here, rather Al likes it or not, then I’m still “in”. It doesn’t have to be Kiffin. if there’s another go getter out there that can turn things around here? I’m still on board. But some putz like Lofton, Ryan or Knapp? Bye bye. I’ll sit back and enjoy the train wreck, with the rest of the world.

    Draft Day Trade…

    Miami J. Long
    STL C.Long
    ATL Dorsey

Okland trades the 4th overall pick plus CB Fabian Washington to Baltimore for their 1st (8th), 2nd (38th) and 3rd (comp. 99th) picks.

Baltimore snags Matt Ryan away from KC and NYJ.

    Balt Matt Ryan
    KC Ryan Clady
NYJ Resists temptation, takes the ideal fit for their 3-4 in Vernon Gholston.
    NE Keith Rivers
    Oak Darren McFadden…

Oakland uses the 38th overall pick to select USC T Sam Baker.

Oakland packages the 99th and 104 picks and if needed a 7th rounder to get back into the 2nd round (maybe Detroit´s 45th or Miami´s 57th and selects Calais Campbell, DE Miami.

Baltimore gets Matt Ryan who should be taking over McNair by week 4 if not since training camp and they also address their biggest need CB, with Washington, a 25 yr. old instant starter instead of taking a chance with an unproven rookie.

Oakland gets McFadden, a LT and a DE with 1st round talent in the 2nd round.

    What? too much?..

For Baltimore moving up 4 spots from 8th to 4th in exchange for 38th pick may be too much, but they are getting a bargain in Fabian Washington for their compensatory 99th pick, which is not eve a true 3rd round selection, it´s between the last regular pick of the 3rd round and the beginning of the 4th round.

  40. Bo Knew Says:

I really hope the last game vs. the Sucs is important for both team’s playoff picture, and we crush em and end their season (with Gannon in the booth). Either that, or the Sucs are 2-13 and we put a Raider exclamation point on the last game of Gruden’s NFL career. Sweet justice!

Maybe then Monte will be job hunting… and Lane will have job security that is earned, not promised.

  41. KD Says:

Supporting every wrong thing is one thing, shitting on your meal ticket is another. There is a LOT better things about this country than there is bad. Like my opportunity, and your right to bitch. You would be beheaded for such words in many places. You would have no say if this country didn’t give it to you. This countries lets you bitch.

  42. R8R4FER Says:

lets get to 500 before we predict 10&6 or 12 wins. We were 4 -12 last year I like optimism too but, we have a ways to go before double digit wins. That being said, with all the improvements and Russell having some experience things should be a lot better. After the draft and into spring training would the time to access wins and loses. There is a lot of movement to be done in shaping this team with players being cut and picked up off waivers. But after all that SUPER BOWL BABY!!!!

  43. Native Says:

Its funny how everyone is putting everything on Kiffin. I can go to the store and spend hundreds of dollars on food items of little value, come home and expect my wife to cook when essentially from the Items I purchased are not what she needed to cook! AL kept a D coordinator that wanted out and that most players wanted out as well! Tommy Kelly has not shown he deserves that kind of money, he is no Leroi Glover who the team let go early in the 90’s. Lightning doesn’t strike twice “AL”!
If the Raiders don’t draft Ellis or Dorsey get ready for a LONG season!

  44. Tommy Trojan Says:

repo, while you’ve gone off the deep end when it comes to the team you are right for the most part in your evaluation of this country and general moral standards in society today, but rather than simply ripping it all, why not attempt to change some of it, there is almost as much(that’s probably a lie but there is definitely some) good in this country and in the world today, most of the problems in our country and society in general are prblems with the human race in general not simply our country, it’s justified to critical and in some cases cynicism and realism coincide, but to ignore the positive is just as close minded as to ignore the negative

and oakglenn is right, if you are contemplating not being a fan then you are not a fan

  45. raiders2 Says:

Tommy Trojan I’m completely agree with you on McFadden, but what do you think if we get Chris Long? Todd McShay seems pretty sure he’ll be slipping to us in his latest mock draft posted today.

The sect of fans who just want to see the team win, with or without Davis and his goofy philosophies, is growing by the day, and have been well over the 50% mark for years now.

  48. Howitzer Says:

Who said anything about 0-16? I was simply taking you at your word when you promised, early this morning, that if Kiffin were replaced with a non-Gruden type coach, you would renounce the Raiders and stop posting here. And I made it clear that I would consider it a silver lining, i.e., I’d prefer the Raiders win and Kiffin stay.

10-6 and back in the playoffs

  51. Repo Man Says:

    Tommy Trojan,

How have I gone off the deep end with my evaluation of this team? Do you realize the majority of Raider fans are fed up with Davis and would not miss his management one bit? You’re the one who’s out of touch, spending all of your time in haunts like this one dominated by Davis kool aid drinkers. In the time between the Gruden years and when the Raiders lowered their ticket prices, you saw those empty green seats…

  52. Tommy Trojan Says:

and madden raider, you are obviously an intelligent person, your logic is usually sound, or at least justifiable, but your conclusions areusually far off, so it baffles me that you could justify at least within your own mind, but definitely not with anyone else outside of DEN, KC, or SD, any of the crap that you spew when it comes to our team, so why be here, if you consider leaving it is probably best for both sides that you do…

  53. Raiderkoolaid Says:

Bob Marley, I would like to see it unfold that way. I don’t know if it would or not, but it would be good if it did.

  54. Native Says:

NO discipline on Defense = LOSSES !

  55. KD Says:

Listen…I support my family, country, and Al Davis whether they are right or wrong. It is what we call on the streets “having their back.” “Being down” My don’t associate with those who don’t share this commitment to their own. I should not argue because our philosphy and beliefs are so different. It will get us no where but irritated. I usually know better than to engage in worthless retoric. Peace.

  56. PhillyRaider Says:

D@mn good stuff Jerry! Good point about how Lofton figures into this too. As I said in a previous post, we NEEDa good start this year but Nation, let us not feel that we don’t DESERVE this schedule. A good deal of the reason for the past 5 years was the tough azz strength of schedule we had. You know, like playing the Superbowl participants in the first three weeks of the season (with the Dolts in btw no less)!! Thanks for the “break” NFL gods. lol

  57. Repo Man Says:

howitzer, if Kiffin is gone, and some putz like Knapp or Lofton is doing Davis’s bidding as head coach, we really might go 0-16. I said that! And what I also said was that if you could justify an 0-16 season with the “silver lining” of me not being in this comments section any longer, then I must really get under your skin.

Believe me, when Norv Lofton and his flying buffoons hit that 16th loss in 2009, you guys will be getting so many trolls in here laughing their asses off at you that you’ll think I was a walk through the park.

  58. Tommy Trojan Says:

raiders2, i would still be somewhat happy with long but mcfadden is far and away the best pick, and he is the pick, so i have nothing to worry about…

  59. los angeles Raiders Says:

u guys have to be kidding me…long and burgess on each side???…thats all we need….fargas and the rest can get 1800 yards combined…I want to Win Now..!!! I just want one more wr or o lineman..kelly and sands will have great years in 09!

  60. DoeDoe Says:

    What it Doo Nation

  61. los angeles Raiders Says:

in on the los angeles raider thing…last time we won a superbowl wa sin la..so untill then ..u have to eat it!

  62. La Milicia Negra Says:

    KD…

    I agree =)

  63. Repo Man Says:

You support Al Davis as much as your family? My god, you’re weirder than I thought, KD. Is Al Davis putting your kids through college? Is Al Davis paying your bills? What a nut job…

  64. Native Says:

Just look at the D front seven… Burgess (primarily pass rusher) Howard, Morrison(playing inside instead of outside) other then these three who they have thats legit???

  65. los angeles Raiders Says:

lakers vs denver… my bad wrong post…

  66. Oakglenn Says:

After many hours of research we have FINALLY been able to ID MaddenRaider/Mary Steed/EastBay Ray/Repoman/trevjo/FireKiffn/SaveKiffin/ et al. While some thought he was Charger Tom, and Others Bronco Barrel man, while still others thought he was Whiner Dan the fat Whiner fan, it is now obvious to all he is Herschel Walker.

  67. los angeles Raiders Says:

    ps..the bills cant beat us

  68. los angeles Raiders Says:

    lol hershel..good one oak

  69. Native Says:

The freaking Lions made themselves look like Tom Brady & co. in week one! RR had no answer for Martz!

  70. Repo Man Says:

KD, you’re not from the “street”, so give that act up now. Nobody from the hood would ever be equally as loyal to an owner of an NFL football team as they are their own family! Being that loyal to a sports team is typical suburban sports fanaticism. Streets smarts goes entirely against such a delusional mindset. Nice try, though, whitey.

  71. los angeles Raiders Says:

draft icky woods and lets go raiders…I heard icky was selling fish door to door in alabama

  72. Repo Man Says:

Oakglenn, your genius shines through again. After IBA runs a poll in February where 80% of Raider fans voted Al Davis off the island, it’s pure wisdom to assume that Al critics on this blog…are all one person. Keep the genius observations coming, kiddo.

  73. SouthTexasRaider Says:

everyone will see a new and improved, up and coming team this year. the non-believers will believe and bandwagoners will jump on the wagon.
JRs’ first official start and he goes 23/31 224 yrds 1td 1int and rhodes gains 122 yards against a supposed stellar defense……..and we are the RAIDERS.
the only way to look from the bottom is up. it gets worse before it gets better………its time for the better and that begins Sept.8 against the doncos.
IN 2008 RAIDER NATION WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH!

  74. Tommy Trojan Says:

repo, you’re saying white people can’t be from the “street”? i know you didn’t say exactly that but you definitely implied it…

  75. PhillyRaider Says:

Another thing to look at is the strength and conditioning. Whoever had the idea to find a new strength guy should get a merit badge! I mean, we’ve got some serious physical specimens (as per the Raider way) but I saw these guys getting shoved around too many times last season. Hopefully, they’re starting to take care of that problem as we blog. Also, somebody needs to inject a couple billions CCs of BADAZZ into our defense. Hey Hall, you get to work on that right away!

  76. Repo Man Says:

KD equated support for the Raiders with support people in the hood having for their family and turf. OMG, Jerry, just unplug this thing.

  77. los angeles Raiders Says:

WHO’S GOING TO BE THIS YEARS MAURICE DREW????

  78. KD Says:

    Repo

No, but he is the grandfather of the Raiders, and deserves a lot more respect than chumps like you are giving him. He is finally cut from a handful of old contracts from our superbowl run, along with handling the tickets and marketing, so he is making more money. It is time for this francise to rise again and it has little to do with having a young coach. Money, money, money. And that elusive QB that we landed last year. Remember, Belechick was nothing untill Tom Brady started QBing his team. Raider Nation will be fine with or with-out your support.

  79. 909raiderlifer Says:

    Oakglenn,#66. Spot on.

  80. Tommy Trojan Says:

LA, there are plenty of small RBs so whichever one(s) take(s) steroids…

  81. los angeles Raiders Says:

Crenshaw & Venice ..it doesnt get more Hood than that buddies….look up mid city … Love to love yall..Im out

  82. 'Burque Raider Says:

lookin forward to the game against the pats, al’s a genius, not only does he prepare us for the afc west opponents, but also the best teams in the league.

don’t expect the raiders to trade washington or route, like many think.

when the pats come to town, brady will be without any targets to throw to.

on the other hand, jamarcus will be coming into his own, and the pats have no db’s….look for the raiders to win this game…and serve notice to the rest of the league……..

  83. los angeles Raiders Says:

lol who has a my space with a raider wallpaper…I do I do

  84. Kirk Says:

The Raiders lost close games last year for three reasons….

    1. No QB
    2. No blitzing in the fourth quarter
    3. Very, very poor short yardage coaching decisions

Jamarcus Russell will make a huge difference in our offense this year. Neither McCown nor Culpepper was physically able to play quarterback in the NFL.

Kiffin lost a couple of games because he went for it on fourth down instead of kicking a field goal, and he kept running Fargas in short yardage situations. Short yardage demands a big back a la Zack Crockett.

Ryan’s vanilla defense was embarassing. No blitzing = no victories.

  85. los angeles Raiders Says:

thats true…ryan is scared to blitz….y…howard or huff should be blitzing !!!

  86. raiders2 Says:

    Chris Johnson

  87. los angeles Raiders Says:

about to go eat some Pollo negro….Go raiders

  88. Thec Says:

Bob Marley, i like your post on the trades. We get DMAC, and Baker a personal favorite of mine. That would work for me.

  89. SouthTexasRaider Says:

hey bob, i heard on NFL sirius radio that comp. picks cannot be traded. but i do like the trade down and we still get mcfadden.

  90. La Milicia Negra Says:

    LA Raiders…

    Original name there =)

I think Felix Jones will be this years drafts Maurice Jones-Drew…

  91. Thec Says:

TT, I see you are one point today!!! Good to see you in Bro.

  92. Tommy Trojan Says:

RR isn’t scared to blitz, AD doesn’t like to

  93. La Milicia Negra Says:

    STR!

    Hey Mate…

good to have you back =)

  94. KD Says:

Repo…Ever heard of Pine St. in Richmond off 23rd? Not sure if that is “hood” enough for you. But I’ve been around enough to know you liberal ass couldn’t do to well in the streets where there are no rules.

I find it a great compliment that you take me as a billy. Or “whitey” Thank you. I have been blessed with the ability do a bit changing.

  95. R8R4FER Says:

Sheriff Goodell is cracking the whip on NFl outlaws and is advising teams that character issues should be taken into consideration when drafting or signing players . But I don’t think that would apply to The Raiders now would it. Just something to be more paranoid about.

  96. raiders2 Says:

Do we have any compensatory picks?

  97. Dakota Says:

    I love this blog, lol.

  98. Thec Says:

Kirk Post 84, I agree with your post. Would also like to Add that our offense was vanilla due to thet fact that we did not have a capable athelete at QB. This year Kiff should be able to open the play book with JRuss.
JRUSS/MBUSH/DMAC = the most dynamic backfield in the NFL.

  99. Dakota Says:

    raiders2

Nope, we signed more FAs than we lost…

  100. PhillyRaider Says:

Yesterday, after I got my sandwich, I remodeled my Madden’07 Raiders team(I have ‘08, it sucks donkey…)to match our current/projected starters. I tried to use whatever info I could glean from the rookie scouting reports and NFL player info out there. I admit I had Gholston starting at right end and Malcolm Kelly as a 4th reciever (he was modeled on Plaxico Buress). I kicked AZZ man but lost to the Pats and the Colts. Now, that may be unrealistic to some but in April, it makes me feel d@mn good!! ‘Course could be mostly my Madden skills too! ROFLMAO!!!

  101. Tommy Trojan Says:

again, for those against mcfadden, and in support of a DL:

there are two ways to win football games, on offense and on defense, however they are not seperate entities entirely, they are interconected and effect one another, a deffensive team with mauling defense will hold most teams to a certain threshold of points so that the offensive may be able to score more than said # of points, the good defense puts the average(usually power-running, ball control oriented) offense in position to score multiple times in the hopes of capitalizing often enough to score more than the opponent; the other method is by scoing points with a good offense and finishing with a higher total than one’s opponent, the opponent must then revert to a one dimensional passing offense in order to keep up with with the powerful offense, this makes it easier for the the defense to stop, so the team wil finish with more points with the opponent, the reason offense s more consistent than defense is because a great offense can be made up of a few serviceable player, a few good players, and a few great players, to have a great defense a team must have all good players with several great players, teams can rarely keep a stock of 11 good defensive players, it’s easier to keep a stock of 7 or 8 good offensive players, making offense the more consistent threat because one great offensive player can make a greater impact than one great defensive player, defense require a team to keep a constant stock of 11 good players with several of them being great, it’s nearly impossible to do that which is why the ravens, giant, and bears have been among the most inconsistent teams in the NFL year to year and the colts and patriots are the dominant teams, they are offense first defense second, it’s never as plain and simple as offense or defense, it O-1 and D-2 or D-1 and O-2, if the later can be acomplished then it’s the best way to win a SB given one year to do so, if you mean to be consistently good over a significant period of time and win a SB(or more) in that time period, then the former is the best way, and the way we are choosing…

  102. RaiderSith Says:

I cant wait till we get to slap T.Brady and J.Gruden arround.

  103. Bo Knew Says:

Some of you clowns need to stay on topic.

The 08 schedule is out and you want to talk about Muslims, politics and an “evaluation of this country and general moral standards in society today”!?!?

Lets discuss our team, the draft, and the challenges ahead this season and save the rightwing drivel for Pat Robertson’s blog.

Oh and Repo Man, Raider fans don’t have “sects”. We all want to win, and cheer the team Al Davis has built. You have to take the long view, and give Al the benefit of the doubt. He has earned it this off season. If your insecurity requires your chosen team to be a winner every year, go order your Strahan jersey.

Just remember, only one NFL owner is also his team’s biggest fan. Only one NFL owner will truly fume when his team sucks, and insist it changes.

  104. Thec Says:

TT, Wanted to let you know that although you take a lot of heat, I respect you 100% I really appreciate your insight on matters concerning the NATION. This blog would not be the same, so keep doing what you are doing Bro. what you say is valid.

  105. Dakota Says:

Lakers better win the West tonight!

  106. Raidergar81 Says:

Hey Oakglen. I usually just read the posts to get my Raider fix, but that Hershel crack was hilarious.

  107. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

    LA Raider,
I grew up at Imperial and Crenshaw. 11951 S. Purche Ave. Century fwy covers where house stood. I went to Henry Clay Jr. Hi. 122 and Western. Used to go to the old Southside Theatre. And my buddy used to work out at the Hoover Gym as a boxer.

  108. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Used to get donuts at Magee’s at 43 and Central. Near the Dunbar Hotel. That’s inner city.

  109. RaiderSith Says:

Lakers? oh come on Dakota! the Lakers?

  110. Bob Marley Says:

    STX Raider

Damn, you are correct, comp picks can´t be traded and that´s the only one they have.

  111. RaiderDell Says:

The schedule is probably the best schedule in a long time.

I have looked at the prior schedule the last 10 years and we usually get Miami in September, and they usually chose to have us wear our home jerseys, black and in the past we have played Baltimore twice within the same month of September or early October when the humidity is real bad.

We played Buffqlo a few years back in October and the weather was real good, I don’t see a problem this early in September.

KC in September is usually hot, camp in Napa is hot and we should be ready and in condition for that humid hot game.

Some of you have commented regarding the dirt field in Oakland, before it switches to grass after baseball, I like the dirt field this year considering LT has to run on it, the footing will not be to his liking as he is a very deep cut and go running back, where Fargas et all in our ZBS is one cut and run.

We have played Denver in November many times, the weather is a wild card, we have won before in November and usually is cold and possibly wet from rain.

This schedule is a gift, let’s take advantage of it and play through the schedule one game at a time.

  112. Bob Marley Says:

Well, it´s not like it was gonna happen anyway..

  113. Dakota Says:

I grew up branding cattle on a ranch, which means I could probably kick all of you street boy’s azzes, lol, but then you would shoot me…bummer.

  114. PhillyRaider Says:

    Post # 103 - Bo Knew… Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!!

  115. Tommy Trojan Says:

thec, i appreciate the respect but have never been of the opinion that a man has to earn respect, i believe you respect a man because he is a man, and do such until you have been cause not to, as long as someone does not disrespect me or give me reason to disrespect them, then they have my respect…..and there are a few of both on this blog, as there are everywhere

  116. Thec Says:

We should be at a min 8-8.

    Sweep the donks
    Sweep the cooks
    Split with SD

    Paramedic cutler
    Paramedic croyle
    paramedic rivers

  117. Bob Marley Says:

    Schedule…

At first glance I was pissed about another early bye week, but on second thought….

It may be good for us with a 1st year starter at QB, the break can allow the staff and Russell to go over the first 4 games and evaluate his performance while getting some extra work on whatever gives him trouble.

And we are a younger team with one projected starter 30 or older on defense (Burgess 30) and 2 on offense (Wade, Carlisle). Everyone needs rest late in the season but a younger team should handle the wear better.

  118. SouthTexasRaider Says:

whats up LMN, its good to be back in the mix.
thank god for this sprint card, it works wonders out here in the country side.
no roadrunner, all dial up and it runs f’en slooooooow!

  119. PhillyRaider Says:

    Post # 115 - Tommy T… Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!!

  120. RaiderDell Says:

    STR

Let me jump in and say “glad your back also”.

  121. Dakota Says:

STR is back, the Al Davis sheep are reuniting!

Reunited and it feels so baaaaaaaa.

  122. Thec Says:

With our backfield i expect us to go 3-1 at worst. Although we should beat SD at home, so really we should be 4-0. SD did not improve, as some of you put it they have gone backwards.
Speaking of the dischargers how is it that he was fired? what was the reason? We have the discharger playbook which is nice.

  123. raiderfan Says:

My default position regarding the 08-09 Raiders season record, on apr. 15, before the draft, before mini camps, camps, preseason, everything that needs to happen until the season actually starts is…7-9.
All kinds of known and unknown variables have to play out. IMO Lane made chicken salad outta ch*ck*ns**t last year, and this year the Raiders are going to earn respect and more importantly, more wins.
Lane, with Al looming, just might burn the midnight oil even more and pull out two extra wins, or Al looming might make the kid buckle. Who knows?
Jerry and fellow bloggers, keep on keepin on…

  124. SouthTexasRaider Says:

dakota i got your back and know how you feel about them city boys.
funny as hell, one time i tried to take one of my city boy friends dove hunting and the pendejo came out with 45 saying he was ready to hunt, funny as schit AND he was serious.

  125. Thec Says:

How is it that Lofton was fired at SD?

  126. Dakota Says:

    lol

  127. Bo Knew Says:

Hey Philly, glad to know someone is reading.

Hallelujah back atcha (rhymes with Asomugha).

  128. lefty 12 Says:

we’ve had the dischargers playbook for some time-watch LT run.it will be the same this year with our def. front personell.

  129. Quagmire'd Says:

Is anyone taking into account that Russell is basically a rookie? Those projecting a 10 or 12 win season gotta be realistic…the season hasn’t even started yet. To go from 4 wins to 10 or 12 wins in one season is highly unlikely (although I hope I am dead wrong on this). I would be happy with a .500 record….it would be a step in the right direction. Rome wasn’t built in a day…same goes for building a winning franchise in the NFL.

  130. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Bo Knew….

Sorry sir, can I be excused to go to the bathroom?

  131. PhillyRaider Says:

STR, ease up on the city boys now. But bringing a .45 to hunt IS some funny sh!t!! I got a 9mike-mike and a AR-15 carbine I bought off a crazy azz country boy. It’s not fully auto though. D@mn, now I’m depressed!

  132. Dakota Says:

Lefty, are you saying that you do not believe that Kelly is the best DT in the nfl??? Al Davis sure thinks so, lol. Rob Ryan’s legacy will be convincing AD to drop 50 mill on a below-average DT.

  133. PhillyRaider Says:

    Bo,

    I got your back!

  134. Bo Knew Says:

LMN, go already but hurry back (and don’t forget to wipe your Shanahan)

  135. Dakota Says:

    STR,

Hunting dove is pretty funny too!

  136. RaiderSith Says:

Looks like we play in San Diego for a night game on NFL Network. Should be intresting.

  137. La Milicia Negra Says:

    STR…

    .45 as in handgun?

  138. lefty 12 Says:

you know where i stand Dakota.

  139. PhillyRaider Says:

    Dakota -

That’s some funny sh!t (post #132) but sad as hell if turns out to be true.

  140. RaiderSith Says:

    Im a squirrel hunter myself.

  141. Dakota Says:

    Lefty,

I just like to hear you say it…

  142. SouthTexasRaider Says:

dakota bro your f’en crazy homie. its been awhile since ive read al davis sheep, tooo funny man.
i already have some cowgirl fans wanting to bet on whos team will have a better record this year….i think i might have to make a few.

  143. Tommy Trojan Says:

ever gone bear hunting with an automatic, there’s nothing left but it’s fun a sh!t

  144. lefty 12 Says:

not this early in the day-at least not this day.

  145. PhillyRaider Says:

OK, OK, this blog is SO F-in crazy, you guys have discovered my OTHER passion. GUNS, (USMC & USA 83-89). If you’re interested, check this out:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJhPMIVgF6c

Yeah, I’m getting one of those… Just Shoot, Baby!!

  146. ctharaiderfan Says:

If Al let Lane Kiffin coach and JaMarcus is focus from the start of camp, the Raiders should do very well. The D-Line is my concern because they have one of the best back 7’s in the league. They should trade down and get a quality DT and maybe DeSean Jackson if he isn’t taken by then. They have enough RB’s so they don’t need McFadden because Rhodes,Fargas and Bush can do it. 9-11 wins for the Raiders this season.

  147. RaiderSith Says:

Squirrel huntin only requires a couple of rocks and a six pack of tall cans.

  149. SouthTexasRaider Says:

nawe nawe naw philly, my city boy homies are cool bro, no disrespect. LMN, yes, 45 as in handgun.
doves are usually hunted with 12,16 and 20 guages or even a 4-10. you need those pellets to spread. have you seen white wing doves flying for thier life, they are fast.
dove is delicious when made right.

    squirrel hunter……lmao

  150. PhillyRaider Says:

    Dakota!!!

    ROFLMAO!!!!!!!

  151. PhillyRaider Says:

Just F-in with you STR! It’s all Nation love here. But I ain’t eatin’ no dove Bro… not with prior knowledge!

  152. La Milicia Negra Says:

    STR…

thats some funny shit =) i’m a hunter myself, but Ive hunted doves and squirrels in sweden with one of my mates.. A handgun on a hunt, if he hit a dove with a .45 there would be much dove left would there ?

  155. PhillyRaider Says:

Naw, Shanarat’s wife would be much more wrinkled than that!! Funny stuff my man… please keep it coming!

  156. RaiderSith Says:

How bout snail huntin? A bottle of Tequila and a shaker of salt. Good times.

  157. PhillyRaider Says:

Sith, I did that as a boy (substitute tequila with grape soda though). I guess that means something to a psychologist. Oh well.

    i’m out for now

  161. La Milicia Negra Says:

  168. RaiderSith Says:

Ok. Do you guys know if theres a Mock Drafts Anonymous?
I’m sick of those damn things, BUT I JUST CANT STOP READING THEM!!!

  169. PhillyRaider Says:

Anybody got the lastest on whether Jerry Jones is lookin to trade up or not?

  170. r8r4lyf3 Says:

All this enthusiasm and we better not get punished for it. Having the strength of schedule not as complicating this year all but promises another dissappointing season if we can’t get another qb. Jamarcuss and Andrew walter,??? If last years back ups had it tough what can we expect this tear. Al needs to bring in some more help as the season is long and full of possibilities for a great year, we could also be in for another train wreck! all in all i only hope we get back on top to our winning days. The end of the tunnel is close but thers still no bright light ahead untill we definitely see actuall light.

  171. RaiderTW Says:

Obama spent time in a muslim school when he was a kid…

—who are you rush Limbaugh? Obama is not muslim or EVER went to a madrasa.
Next I’ll read Al Davis is in a sex video with Marilyn Monroe.

  172. La Milicia Negra Says:

    RaiderTW…

LOL I knew Al and Marilyn had something going on =)

  173. PhillyRaider Says:

    RaiderTW-

WTF? Did I miss the post about Obama?

  174. M.I.A. Raiders Says:

Post #77 … That would be Chris Johnson.

  175. RaiderTW Says:

    PhillyRaider
    #10 & last thread.

  176. Jim (ct raider) Says:

no excuse for fast start? everyone on the raider’s schedule is also thinking the same about them! these reports are ridiculous. Does Jerry think only the Raiders are trying to get better? How many playoff teams repeat the following year? How the hell does he know who will be what again? maybe we should put the giants and pats back in the superbowl. if we’re basing on last year’s teams to play they did last year then we’ll be 4-12 again. New season Jerry. You don’t know who will be what until after 8 games not before.

  177. La Milicia Negra Says:

    RaiderTW…

did you see my reply? #13?

  178. lefty 12 Says:

Jim,you must be at the wrong site.there is no room for rational thinking here.

  179. saintkaufman Says:

Chris Johnson is ridiculous fast. He runs really hard as well. I think Jamaal Charles has got better moves but Johnson is an absolute rocket.

We’d be lucky to have either one, but we don’t need a RB this year. :(

  180. lefty 12 Says:

something nobody has mentioned-how many teams have their bye the week before they play us?

  181. PhillyRaider Says:

D@mn, just had four Pop-Tarts with my boy! That little so and so has got me hooked on those things like crack!! :( Anyway, anybody here anything about us making and trades for picks. I still think we need more picks… ANYBODY?!?

  182. Dakota Says:

    RaiderTW: Just read Obama’s books.

Obama has noted in his two books, “Dreams From My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope,” that he spent two years in a Muslim school and another two years in a Catholic school while living in Indonesia from age 6 to 10.

  183. PhillyRaider Says:

Correction - ‘hear anything about us making any trades trades for picks’.

  184. Thec Says:

PhilyR, I with you on that one. I would like to see us somehow get into the 2nd, 3rd or both with out selling the farm.

I think AL has something up his sleave besides his arm. Had to include that coz you guys are in rare form today.

  185. saintkaufman Says:

If Goff is available in the 3rd or definately the 4th I would like us to work a deal to grab him. Let Kirk and Thomas blitz, cover the RB/TE and the edges and let Goff stuff the middle.
I truly believe a big-ass MLB is one of the final pieces to this defense.

    I Like DE, OT, MLB.
JLH has got to step it up this year.

Of course the whole thing rides on Russell.
After all of these signings he has got to be nervous.
    Hang tuff young man!

  186. Thec Says:

keep asking but what about picking up either Spikes or Trotter?

  187. Dakota Says:

    RaiderTW,

I never said he attended a madrasa. By the way, I was defending Obama.

  188. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Dakota…

anyways, i got it, I understood that you meant a muslim school when you wrote muslim school and not Madrassa…

  189. Thec Says:

If Jruss is a “true competitor” he should be choping at the bit to run the O.
Having DMAC?MBUSH will take some press off the young LAD. But I fully expect the playbook to be opened up. Jruss should have been studying since he signed. So he should allready have a firm grasph of what we are doing on O. Jruss just needs to get some games under his belt. He will make some mistakes but all in all he should be fine.

  190. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Dakota…

he was not under attack, I just claimed that he would never last in the race if he in 2001 had said “I’m a muslim”…..Which I know he isn’t…

  191. PhillyRaider Says:

    Yeah Thec

2nd or 3rd in this draft wold be real nice. About Spikes or Trotter… about the only thing I give respect to the iggles with is Jim Johnson, their DC. The guy is d@mn near a defensive genious. He’s had Trotter and Spikes and doesn’t want them around anymore, I’ll take that as a sign.

  192. Dakota Says:

    gotchya LMN.

  193. La Milicia Negra Says:

But then again, you never know… Tony Blair was a protestant most his life and became catholic after his PM gig…

So you never know, bush perhaps comes out as a sunni in october =)

  194. Coach on Wheels Says:

    Week 1: Sept. 8 Broncos (Mon.)7:15 p.m.-WIN
    Week 2: Sept. 14 @ Chiefs 10 a.m.-WIN
    Week 3: Sept. 21 @ Bills 10 a.m.-WIN

    Week 16: Dec. 21 Texans 1:05 p.m.-LOSS
    Week 17: Dec. 28 @ Buccaneers 10 a.m.-LOSS

Looks like 8-8. On the road to winning again.

  195. Dakota Says:

    COW,

Rough last four games again, huh? We need to win that Texans game if we have any hopes of playoffs, but I would settle for 7-9 or better.

  196. Thec Says:

COW = Voice Of Reason, Hey coach how you doing sir. Hey we could sweep the donkeys but i want 8-8 min. we should also give SD a Run/Scare. I am expecting us to beat SD at home.

  197. lefty 12 Says:

the Ravens stink.why is everyone writing that game off as a lose?TB will do their usual fall after a good year.i can see us winning those and splitting our div games.it’s tough to sweep a div opp.plus the Buffalo game is no cake walk.

  198. Thec Says:

Donks, and cooks will not I repeat will not beat us this year.

  199. Oakglenn Says:

Philly Raider, NEVER come in here bad mouthing Pop tarts.

Let’s just say the Raiders are playing well and having a good season. Well, then they should have some momentum going into those last four games. If they split the last four, They could be primed for a playoff appearence.
I’m not so sure the New Orleans game and Baltimore games are not going to be winnable games. I think New Orleans got to the NFC Championship game more on good feelings than quality play. And they have been slipping since. Same thing with Tampon Bay. The only reason Tampon Bay made the playoffs last year was every other team in the division fell off the planet. Then when they got to the playoffs they got rolled. Badly. At home.

And Thec, don’t worry about Jam. He’s working out and working with the coaching staff as we speak. He understands he needs to establish this is HIS TEAM. He understands you don’t declare yourself to be team leader. Team leader is thrust onto you.

  200. lefty 12 Says:

Thec,i hope you’re right, but you can throw out the records in div games.they are always tough and usually something weird happens, esp.in KC.

  201. Thec Says:

Donks - inferior team. we better sweep them they are finished.
cooks = inferior team. We should sweep them Herm Edwards.

sd - We should be giving them all they can handle this year. I expect us to win 1.

  202. PhillyRaider Says:

    Oakglenn -

That’s the problem my man, I can’t bad mouth them. I’ve had like 10 in two days!! Even, my kid complained to wifey! But he started it so too bad! Oh yeah, good point about TBs success last year!

  203. Thec Says:

    Oakglen,

Yeah bro i hear ya. I am not worried about Jruss. In fact I am expecting him to play better than the progs have indicated. I truly expect him to have an impact.
I know he is still a rookie, 07 redshirt year allmost but he will do alot better than a lot of people think.

  204. lefty 12 Says:

when the asses and the squaws look at their schedule they say the same about us,Thec.after all we are the ones who were 4-12 and have only 19 wins in the last 5 years.we’re also the ones with a rookie QB and a terrible DL.

  205. RaiderTW Says:

    Dakota Says:
    RaiderTW: Just read Obama’s books.

Obama has noted in his two books, “Dreams From My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope,” that he spent two years in a Muslim school and another two years in a Catholic school while living in Indonesia from age 6 to 10.

—a CATHOLIC SCHOOL!!!! I’ll never vote for him now….damn pedofiles!!!

  206. Alameda Insider Says:

Yo Jerry Mac,…I bet I had the schedule before you did, and I promise I will attend more road games then you this season.

  207. Coach Dowling Says:

9-7, and we’ll be thinking playoffs the whole season but coming up just short. The first six games aren’t as easy as some may believe. I’ll be happy if we can come out of that with a 4-2 record. If we can do that we got a shot at the playoffs anything less, and it’s another year gone by, but 9-7 after being one of the five worst teams two years in a row I”LL TAKE IT!!!

  208. Terrapin Says:

Last year was last year. This year is this year. You really won’t know how good teams are or how much they have improved (or we have improved for that matter) until the season begins. Sure it looks easy at face value b/c we’re thinking about last year. Its a whole nother season up us.

  209. Alameda Insider Says:

RaiderTW,…bfd,..I couldnt care less about Barrack Hussein Osama,…if he gets elected hopefully James Earl Ray has a son somewhere and his presidency wont be a long one.

  210. lefty 12 Says:

i love all the optimism and enthusiasm but everyone seems to be forgetting that we were the pushover the last 5 years.we’re the ones with only 19 wins in the last 5 years.lets do what Gruden used to do and break the season down into qtrs.let’s hope for 2-2 in the 1st qtr while seeing much improvement.then if we go 3-1 or 4-0 we can start to talk playoffs and 10 or more wins.sorry if i’m putting a downer on everyone, but lets show some sort of realism.

  211. Midwest fan Says:

Just heard this interview with Jay Lehman out of IL. Not sure which LB position he plays but he seems like he could be a stud. Also didn’t hear where he’s suppose to go. Guess he had over 100+ tackles last 2 years in each season. What the experts in here think?

  212. lefty 12 Says:

AI-that is without a doubt the stupidist thing you have ever said.

  213. M.I.A. Raiders Says:

I know this is more than likely false rumors by maybe the Rams or agents to drive up dollars but if this was somehow true it would be P-E-R-F-E-C-T!!!! The fins would negotiate with Gholston and he would accept being #1, Rams would scoop on Jake Long and Falcons are drooling over Dorsey..leaving us with C.Long !!!
