On the clock
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 at 5:43 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Got a call from a Philadelphia radio station which is conducting a mock draft.
I’m selecting on behalf of the Raiders.
I’ve been told Michigan tackle Jake Long went No. 1 to the Miami Dolphins and Chris Long No. 2 to the St. Louis Rams. I’m supposed to get a heads up on the No. 3 before I get the phone call to make my pick.
Here’s what I’m thinking _ if the Atlanta Falcons take LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, then I’m taking Ohio State defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston.
If the Falcons opt to replace Michael Vick and draft Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, then I’m going with Dorsey.
I’ll let you know how it turns out and give you my reasoning later this evening. And then you can tell me why I’m wrong.

Jerry,
This should be fun.
You’re basically grabbing the hornets nest and giving it a good shake. I’d love Dorsey, but we’ll have to make some moves to get deeper at DE.
April 16th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
You can TRADE… don´t forget that!
April 16th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Sure, draft Gholston…he will get all his sacks in two games and then disappear for the rest of the year…he has Jerry Porteritis.
Draft McFadden (If Chris Long is gone)
April 16th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
draft anybody BUT mcfadden. Bush isnt getting NO LOVE. let that guy run.
April 16th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
90% of NFL players are on HGH. Place a MLB player next to an NFL player, and the NFL player will make the baseball player look like Fraud Boy’s mom. How long can the NFL fool everyone with its testing program? Implement the Olympics’ testing program and the NFL will disappear due to all of the suspensions.
April 16th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Draft Rey Mauluga
April 16th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Jerry, I like your thinking, but I am glad I don’t have to decide. I would want to hear what Coach Cable has to say about our left tackle situation before I would pick.
April 16th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Sounds about right to me Jerry.
April 16th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Dakota, I have to disagree with you, 99% of the NFL is on roids. The thing with roids the chemist are way ahead of the testers. They make new batces with diffrent compounds every other day. Making it hard o detect. Why coz you dont know what it is you cant test for it.
April 16th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Jerry, what station in Philly and what time? I would like to try and listen to you on the web.
April 16th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
why not keep it realistic and take mcfadden, that is how the top 3 will unfold, so keep it going, take mcfadden and do what the raiders are doing, but i guess since you’re the one doing it and it won’t affect us in any way, take whoever you want, i don’t really care
April 16th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Jerry, Trade down with the cowgirls, then take the best DE, DT on the board.
April 16th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
I think you have to go with Glenn Dorsey here. While McFadden is probably the best overall player in the draft, the Raiders already have a very solid RB in Fargas and an excellent prospect with Michael Bush. The greatest area of need on this team is DT and Dorsey should be able to start from Day 1 and have an immediate impact. McFadden would also have an immediate impact but you have to ask yourself, can they still win without McFadden? I believe so. Can they win without an upgrade to DT? I highly doubt it. I don’t believe Gholston is the correct pick at this point because even though their DEs haven’t produced as well as we would like, the largest problem was with RBs getting through the first line of defense without being touched. Therefore, the pick should be Glenn Dorsey.
April 16th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Thec,
The 10% I left off were for kickers and punter…but you are probably right, lol.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
Thec, if they can’t test for it then how do you know that 99% of the NFL is on roids? Frankly, that is a very ignorant statement because I know for a fact that more than 1% of the players in the NFL are honest. There may be more players on steroids then some people think but 99% is blatantly wrong.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
dakota, maybe the 10% is us, that would explain the last 5 years(joking obviously…i think) and it would be ironic that we’re the only team in the leaague not cheating
April 16th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
I heard a pretty interesting comment this morning on (gulp) ESPN radio that was discussing the ludicrousness <– is that a word? of the rookie bonus money and what GM’s are doing to combat it.
They made the point that with those top 5 picks you need to take guys that are versatile and can play several positions. They feel that is why QB is the highest risk position because if he fails as a QB there is nothing else you can do with the guy. They spoke about Gallery(of course) but made the point that he is not a bust in the true sense of the word because he can still have a long productive career at RT or G. Same for DE/LB and to a lesser extent RB, but few have ever made the grade from RB to QB or WR or whatever.
The consensus amongst the GM’s is that Jake Long, Chris Long and Gholston were the 3 least riskiest picks because of their ability to be moved to different positions.
It’s basically leveraging their investment for future length of productivity due to the environment of the current CBA. Interesting analysis I thought.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
JD, Calm down bro. I was just joking sheesh. I dont know what percentage is on roids, and dont really care.
Thanks for being frank with the name calling nice touch. lol
April 16th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
Poor Jerry if you draft for the Raiders you get one pick and then no love unless they go to the 4th round. I agree with your Dorsey / Ghoulston line up.
My biggest hope is that Miami drafts Ghoulston. If that happens we can expect to get C Long. That is the most likely scenario: Ghoulston, J Long, Dorsey - C Long to Oakland.
If Jake goes #1 we would need the Rams to grab Ghoulston and I think they prefer Long.
Atl needs a DT and QB so I think C Long could slip by them.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
150 top athletes from different sports and all over the world was asked anonymously if the would take a drug that did get them in the top10 but would cut 15 years of their life…
92% said yes…
April 16th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
jd, thats is a great way to get noticed on the blog with name calling. You say you know for a fact that 1% is not roided up, then what is your source bra?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Al D takes = DMAC
April 16th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

April 16th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
neither one of you can quote it as fact, but it’s likely much more than 1% and much less han 99%, reality is usually somehwere in the middle of every argument
April 16th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Is it pretty much consensus now that if we were drafting for defense then the order is 1) C. Long 2) Dorsey 3) Gholston??? What up Sedrick Ellis…is he still an option or what?

I agree, 99% sounds wrong to me, too. I think 100% of players in the NFL are on steroids. Most pro athletes today are on some sort of growth enhancer, and most majory college athletes are. I don’t know why people are in such denial of this. Are you guys trying to convince us that there is still a shred of integrity in American sports? Is that it?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

April 16th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

April 16th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Tommy Trojan, that’s a fascinating nugget of wisdom. It’s more than 1%, but less than 99%. Because in most arguments…the reality is somewhere in the middle. Wow. You should write fortune cookies, as a moonlighting gig between your shifts working the register at the Raider Image.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Just add a couple more “IFs” and you’ll be certain to get our pick right.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
This S#!t is getting funier bythe second. I am laughing so hard i am about to hurt something.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
skull, you’re generally right but the “if” in that statement is a HUGE “IF”! mcfadden is the pick regardless of how our defensive board falls, especially considering the top two on the defensive board will be gone, and on the overall board they are behind mcfadden anyway
April 16th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Hey Steven Douchebag,
I see this your first day on this blog. Good for you! I can also see that mom did’nt give up enough hugs and that perhaps it’s time for you to have a lunchable and hit the beddy-bye. School in the morning and all.
Night Night!
April 16th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
I don’t think the Raiders will be the best team in the NFL this year. Then again, I don’t think they’ll be the worse, either. Because, you see, in most arguments, reality is somewhere in the middle. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to stock the Kwame Harris coffee mugs we just got in.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
OK, we draft McLuvin. Obviously Bush, Fargas, and Rhodes are pissed. What do we do now??
April 16th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
TT, I did not quote it as fact. I was joking with Dakota. lil bit o humor
April 16th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Skull, Ellis is on my board.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
The Kwame coffee mugs have holes in the bottom, btw. It can’t block coffee from getting through the bottom of the cup! Those guys at the manufacturing plant think they’re really funny. Wait till Mr. Davis finds out.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
TT,did you read the post 76 from the last blog entry. That wss some funny stuff.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Oakglenn, there’s more than a 1% chance we will get Ellis, but less than a 99% chance. That’s what my seasoned logic tells me.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
we let them be pissed, if they’re immature enough to complain then we don’t want them on our team anyway, and if they must leave, so beit, fargas is solid and rhodes is below average, bush will not be upset knowing he will get the TDs and be the long term companion of mcfadden, and that he’ll be in the backfield when mcfadden is in the slot…..or under center(if that were to happen)
April 16th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
TT, Have you seen the movie the HOAX. Per Antipsy3 you are the richard gere character, and i am the hamster. today is funny as all H. lol
April 16th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
MBUSH should be okay knowing that he is apart of a team that will win a SB in 3, IMHO of course.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
IMHO, the key to DMAC is to get him touches in space.Sounds like a cliche but he will be a mismatch for most everyone on the field IMHO. I dont think he will be the feature back. I think MBUSH will be the hammer smash mouth back he wil get his touches. Fargas is going to be a@@ out IMO.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
yeah i read that post thec, never saw the movie and don’t care to
April 16th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
I think Ellis is an option but the problem is if Jake Long goes in the top 3 (he will) then C Long, Dorsey or Ghoulston have to still be there at #4. Mathmatical certainty. So if Ellis is #4 on our board, he has no real shot barring a trade down.
The other thing is Ellis is a Sapp type. If Kelly is going to fill that role, where does that leave Ellis? Dorsey can beat out Sands and Long can beat out Richardson. Ghoulston can beat out either Richardson or SLB Williams. Next year if Burgess goes Long or Ghoulston play opposite Richardson.
Ellis could drop to #11 if we were to trade down maybe there’s a shot.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
The Pope just said in Washington that the Raiders have more than a 1% chance of winning the Super Bowl this year, yet less than a 99% chance.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Man…You guys are all freakin hilarious. It takes forever to read through everything and I eventually have to scroll through it quickly but damn…alot of entertainment with all sorts of topics. You guys bring it all on the table. Wow. Straight up Soap Opera and Reality TV at its best.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
how do you define feature back?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
TT, that’s the point, you’d have to move someone. Most likely Fargas, and remember, players and agents have long memories. They don’t like being told they’re gonna be the feature back, sign a long term, contract, low on cash and loaded with incentives only to get shipped out to Detroit. That will hurt you in the future.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Huff24, welcome to the party!!! It has been some funny ish being posted all day long.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Jerry McDonald - You’re the freakin man. Just say NO to McFadden. If you pick McFadden after telling us your thoughts…is it because Al Davis stepped into your war room and made you do it? lol.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Actually, the Pope just said he was only mocking the guy working the register at the Raider Image store, and that the Raiders actually have no chance whatsoever of winning the Super Bowl until Al Davis is dead.
The Pope said it.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Thec - Thanks. No kidding man. The Raider Nation is diverse in every attack, every topic, every opinion…you name it. Good stuff!
April 16th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Just take Gholston, we have 3 highly paid Dts in Kelly, Warren and Sands… Gholston is the need pick.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Sedrick Ellis isn’t in the picture? Even a guy like Clady would be good, solely because building up the trenches leads to successful football teams. Ideally, if either Long or Dorsey aren’t there I’d like to trade down. But we’ll probably end up with the guy who posted the fastest 40. Raiders!
April 16th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
The Nation will go into an uproar the day that AD dies. Based on what we here on a daily basis already…I can’t even fathom the discussions after he has passed. Insanity!
April 16th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Careful Huff, this is troll country!
April 16th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
ellis will not fall past #9, and if he did, he would go #10, but COW, you’re assuming the top player in the draft is nowhere in our top 4?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Pick #4: Branden Albert, OL, Virginia
April 16th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
I have to admit…I’m a little worried about the Gholston idea based on hearing about his motor. I don’t feel comfortable having a guy not playing hard on everydown. I don’t know that to be true but I’d rather have McFadden over that. Of course…I still wouldn’t draft McFadden. I’d trade down for more picks.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
jerry do ther best thing and take brandon albert please
April 16th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
IMO, a feature back is the guy that carries most of the running between the tackles load, and doing most of the “Hard” running. I will use NO as an example although a poor one as they dont use the ZBS I see MBUSH as a duece mac type, I see DMAC as an RBUSH type.
RBUSH is not the feature, but he should touch the ball alot.
So is my assement on how we use BUSH/DMAC accurate? No its just my opinon.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
If we go to the SB in 3 years M Bush could be the starter even if we draft a RB. A lot can happen in 3 years with a RB. Ask Bo, Napoleon (either one), Jordan, Wheatley, or Garner. Have we had a “fature back” for 3 years or more since Al blew it on the Allen situation?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Saintkaufman - No worries. I’ve got my war paint on and my spear in hand. haha.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
808 kodos
April 16th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Albert will be the pick of the Raiders and secure the LT position.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
but d-line men don’t produce the first year thr team needs results w/ our only good pick. we need a playmaker this season.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
As sad as a lot of Raider fans would be when Al Davis dies, I’m sure when the team suddenly starts to get better they’ll start to get over it.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
bramdon albert would b a beast in the silver and black
April 16th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
COW - Why do you refer to Sam Williams starting at OLB? Robert Thomas took his job last year.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
oak, fargas stays, he is 28, has major injury history, is a sub par reciever, is a straight-line runner, had only one good year in a system inclined to achieve such, and he is being paid solid money, where is his trade value? he will be a good backup for the next year, maybe two
April 16th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
COW, In your opinion who was better, the 76′Raiders or 83′ Raiders?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Michael, Warren is only on the roster for this next year. Sands could be cut.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
A couple of mocks I’ve seen have Ellis at #11. He may go #4 for that matter. I doubt it though. If KC doesn’t take Clady, Ellis could go #5.
The highest rated player in the draft on most boards may fall to us. C Long. The other guy most often rated #1 is Jake Long and he doesn’t make it past #2.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Sam Williams was hurt again last year but was a starter.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
sam will start
April 16th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
MaddenRaider - Honestly. My concern with AD passing is that I don’t see anybody better taking his spot. His son? His wife? Seriously. Who? I’m not advocating that AD is great anymore but damn…whos waiting in the wings and are they equal or better or is it even more down hill from there?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
TT I think he has more trade value than Rhodes. That’s the problem. You’d have to move someone. As you know, any RB wants to be in the game, toting the rock. You can’t have NFL quality guys standing around. That won’t work, so someone would have to go. Think about that. It’s a problem. do you move Rhodes for nothing?? Fargas??? Bush??? You gotta move someone.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I smell a trade brewing. Whether its the 4th pick being auctioned off or its players for a high second I don’t know; but something smells fishy. I honestly can’t remember (maybe you can) the Raiders ever interviewing players that will be later picks when they don’t have any later picks or picks in that player’s vicinity. (Devin Thomas, Mario Manningham?)
April 16th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
I am scared of j long. USC slammed his lights out in the rose bowl. Went to that game and enjoyed the thrashing.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Only when maddenloser dies will we celebrate
April 16th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Thec - Tough one. Ugh. If I had to pick I’d have to go with the 76 Raiders. The 83 Raiders were no sloches but the 76 team had to go through some of the best teams in NFL history in Pitt and Miami as well as a Donky team who went to the SB a year or two later.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
As far as I recall…Thomas stole Williams job just like Routt stole Washington’s and Eugene stole Schweigert’s. There was alot of movements during the season. When Williams became healthy, he never got his job back due to Thomas playing better than him, plus…Thomas was rewarded with a 2 or 3 year contract in the off-season last year so he was getting starter money.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Thomas waould be a nice stretch the field addition as he is fast. Mario is not that fast drops balls but his stock has moved up somewhat.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
thec, what do you mean you’re scared of Jake long?? scared he’s good or scared he’s bad??
Terrapin, Davis likes talking to guys. he likes talking football. Just like all of us.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
no, you don’t have to move anyone, rhodes is being paid very reasonably this year, fargas is the primary backup with bush being the shortyardage.goalline guy this year, rhodes is nothing but insurance and maybe competiton at KR
April 16th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

April 16th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Say coach you and I had a discussion on the draft and we said Ellis over McLuvin. How do you feel about that now??
April 16th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
COW, Is Rob Ryan going to make us less predictable on D and blitz. I like what you said last night about run blitzing, illucidate that idea for us ignant folk sir.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
TT, I think you’re missing my point. You don’t HAVE to move anyone. But having NFL quality guys standing around is NOT going to help your team. They’re gonna be disgruntled, and it’s not going to be good. You’re gonna have to move someone.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Williams got healthy but Thomas stayed on at the end of the year. Williams is a dying breed - an AD scholarship guy. He can’t stay healthy and is no L Taylor when hehealthy but for years we haven’t addressed it. He’s Carlos Francis at LB.
I like Thomas as a situation guy or ILB in a 3-4 but Ghoulston beats either of them out easy. Of course if RR doesn’t let Ghoulston blitz once in a while…
April 16th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Turn rhodes into our return man.Kicks and punts. How fast is rhodes? can we decoy him or use him as a wide?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Fargas is a@@ out. He will start the season but hoe USC does it is that everyone gets a turn. Those that shine get more turns. MBUSH will outshine Fargas. So in the in it will be MBUSH as the thunder, DMAC get a lot of touches as the lighting.
Get used to it guys. Raiders will be the USC of the NFL.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
G-Raider - That was from November 2006. What the heck were you looking for? That whole Vegas thing. I honestly don’t think Gannon was playing for money during that game. I honestly believe Gannon was trying to win and he ended up doing too much. Gruden knew him too well and Callahan Effed them by changing things up the day before the Superbowl. Robbins didn’t help at all and became a distraction. When its all said and done…we were in the wrong place at the wrong time. We got beat down whether we like to admit it or not. What can you do?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Yeah Davis does like talking football but I just wonder why Thomas and Manningham? Who’s next? Its interesting to me to say the least. I wouldn’t spend too much time personally interviewing guys that I stand no shot in getting unless you take them #4 which ain’t gonna happen. Unless Kiffin is just doing his due diligence, the speculating mind says something else is going on.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Oak, I kinda think it is moot since C Long, Dorsey or Ghoulston has to be there at #4 but if we traded down to #6 say, I would grab Ellis. He’d be a huge upgrade over Sands and help us right away as such.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Levi Brown was the 5th pick in the draft last year.
Braden Albert could be better than him.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
thec, mcfadden is a much better RB than fargas, he will start every game he is healthy in, he is not reggie bush, he is a hybrid of reggie bush and adrian peterson
April 16th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Terp, I agree. It looks like we are about to do some wheelin, and dealin. We need a 2nd and 3rd. Thomas would be a mnice 2nd, but i would prefer we get a DE or DT with one of our picks.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
COW, do you actually think we would pass the #1 guy on our board for the #3 or #4?
April 16th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
TT, IYO do you think DMAC starts out the gate?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
That would be a butt load of WR talent don’t you guys think? 5 WR sets?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
TT, Love watching CFB. I got to watch a lot of DMAC on the sec channel CBS. I have been watching DMAC since he has been at U of A. I totally agree with you that he is a better back, IMHO i do not think he will start out of the gate.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Coach On Wheels -
If we can trade down just a few spots like that (say to six or
I say we go for Ryan Clady. He’s a good pick for us….just not worth the #4. If we can trade down a few though…he’s perfect.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
TT - McFadden isn’t #1 on OUR board, hes the #1 on YOUR board, so its very possible that they pass on McFadden.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Terapin - I think teams are allowed up to 30 interviews so they look at all their options. It’s just smart in that let’s say you get a great trade down offer. Is there a guy at #6 you love? What about #8? If not, maybe you don’t trade. If you know you like Ellis or Clady, then why not go down two spots.
Just due dilligence. That’s why I don’t read too much into who gets invited in.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
there is no way we get a 2nd and 3rd, it would be 2nd or 3rd, i’ve also heard a rumor of trading washington, stu, rhodes, and our 3rd next year for #28, it’s purely rumor but any opinions?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Ballbag I wont answer that,..because if you are that clueless on the importance of the center then I wont bother…Ballbag, the center has a hell of alot more duties then simply hiking the damn ball…first of all, if Robbins is there he would call line assignments to slow down the pass rush….for some reason Im forgetting that bastard DE`s name who was a monster.

April 16th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
AI - Simeon Rice?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
of course he starts out of the gate thec, and huff, i know for a fact(yes fact, not my opinion) that mcfadden is #1 on al davis’ board, and that is the one that matters, it’s just a happy(in my case) coincidence that i happen to have him #1 on my board, as many other “experts” do, it’s doubtful jake long is #1 on MIA’s board, but they are desperate so they will reach a few spots
April 16th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
TT that’s where it gets complicated. Let’s go with your scenario that they are GONNA take McLuvin. Then hell yes, trade Washington, Fargas, Stu, and/or our next years 3rd for #28.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
80/20… 20 percent of people cause 80 percent of the problems… 20 percent of the people do 80 percent of the work too…
April 16th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
AI, so are you certain that Adam Treu did not do that as well? What did Treu do all season? Did you forget that Treu started at center most of the ‘01 season when Barret was injured? And even if he didn’t, Who’s fault is it if the backup center doesn’t know how to check off pass rushers? Another sign that the Raiders don’t practice hard enough.
You do understand that the people who believe the Raiders would have won if Robbins would have played are right there with the flying saucer crowd?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
TT, iwould do that trade. Then we could get a DE, or DT. I would pull the trigger on that one. We could possible get baker, or cherilis if he is onthe board.
The part i am quizy about is getting rid of rhodes. He should be working on fielding punts, and kick returning.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Potential traders for the 4th pick: Jets, Patriots, Baltimore, Dallas
Jets and Patriots are division foes and will want to grab either McFadden or Gholston ahead of the other out of want and fear. But the Jets may want to grab the QB from fear that KC will. Baltimore needs a QB - bad. Dallas …are they really that interested in McFadden?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
TT - Yeah…Santa Claus told me different. He told me McFadden won’t be drafted by the Raiders. Thats a fact too. Are you going to disagree with Santa?

April 16th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
it was speculation by someone in the organization, pure speculation with no basis in fact, although it seems to be in the realm of possibility, just wondering what the opnions are on it
April 16th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
TT - The #1 on our board is probably one of the 3 guys listed #1 on EVERY board out there - C Long, Jake Long, Ghoulston. In recent months Ryan and Dorsey have popped up here and there but these 3 guys are on top of every board.
Skull - Clady may not get by KC at #5 but yeah I like him. If we move down further, I like Chris Williams of Vany at LT in ZBS. Fast, smart, great pass blocker. JR would be much safer.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
It would be nice to have a 2nd round pick or even a 3rd because there still are a lot of holes to fill. the o line can run block but not pass protect for one. then theres that nagging stopping the run issue. plus a play maker on offense.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
I like that trade errr… rumor. Let do that.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

April 16th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
mcfadden is #1 on nearly every team’s board, he just won’t go in the top 3 because the top 3 teams can not justify taking him, which is why everyone has us taking mcfadden, and is quick to exclaim how lucky we are to get the top player with the fourth pick
April 16th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
I would hate to see DMAC go to the cooks.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
TT - How does a team not justify a once and every 20 years running back who can be a scoring machine? How?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
i would be happy with chris long, gholston, ellis, or even clady, but mcfadden will be the pick, we could justify taking any of the other guys, but we can also justify taking mcfadden, and he is the best player in the draft, which is why we are taking him
April 16th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
The Chiefs have no line. They have no QB. They have Dwayne Bowe at WR. They have an aging Tony Gonzales. McFadden would struggle but would at least give Larry Johnson a 1-2 punch.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
the jets will end up with mc fadden it just makes sense then all the jets fans at the draft will cheer for once.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

April 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Visits spark trade speculation; Jarrod Cooper (finally) signs
By David White
Chronicle staff
The Raiders raised a few eyebrows by inviting Michigan receiver Mario Manningham to town Wednesday.
Manningham won’t be the fourth player taken in the NFL Draft. He’s considered a second-round pick at best but among the top 10 receiving prospects.
The Raiders don’t have any picks in the second or third rounds, so why bring in Manningham for a talk if he won’t be around for the next selection at No. 104 overall?
Looks like they’re weighing some options for a possible draft-day trade that would involve any number of players and picks.
Manningham will be available in the second round, maybe even the third. His stock plummetted after lying to team officials at the NFL Combine about his drug use, followed by a 4.59 40 time.
He sent an apology letter every NFL team, admitting he flunked two drug tests. He also improved his 40-time to 4.38 at Michigan’s Pro Day.
If the Raiders like what they heard Wednesday, Oakland could move up and add depth at wide receiver.
Shoppable Raiders are cornerbacks Fabian Washington and Stanford Routt and maybe even quarterback Andrew Walter or safety Michael Huff. The Raiders could add future picks to sweeten the deal.
Ohio State star Vernon Gholston could add to Oakland’s pass rush ability.
Why don’t the Raiders have a pick for 100 spots?
Last month, they traded their second-round pick to Atlanta for cornerback DeAngelo Hall.
Last April, they traded this year’s third-round pick to New England so they could draft offensive tackle Mario Henderson.
Also last season, they lost a fifth-rounder to Denver for defensive tackle Gerard Warren. They have single picks in rounds four and six and two picks in the seventh.
In other news:
The Chronicle confirmed visits from four other prospects — Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, Virginia defensive end Chris Long, Ohio State pass rusher Vernon Gholston and Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long.
LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey should visiit soon.
Also, the Raiders (finally) re-signed special teams star Jarrod Cooper, an eight-year veteran who missed the first four games of 2007 for steroids and the last five games with torn ligaments in his right knee.
A source close to Cooper confirmed he was at team headquarters in Alameda on Wednesday.
The Raiders’ kick coverage teams were poor when he was gone. When he returned, they improved and stuffed Bears Pro Bowler Devin Hester to the point of minimal returns.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
TT, does MBUSH start with DMAC IYO?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
they think they can justify it because they think they have great RBs(the rams are the only ones who are correct in that assumption), and they have far more needs than we do, we’ve satisfied the majority of our needs this offseason, while we have alot of RBs we do not have a great one(although bush may eventually be that) and we have no player on offense who is one of the best players at his position, mcfadden instantly gives us that
April 16th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Even if Chris Long is taken #4. Its obvious that he wasn’t viewed as the best player on the board. I’ll admit that. Perfect for the Raiders though? Yes. A need pick as well? Yes.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Anyone catch the new Ghost Hunters tonight??? Did they finally get Satan on video???
April 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Am I to understand that some of you honestly believe we would have won Super Bowl 37 had Robbins played? Do you honestly think that game boiled down to Robbins not being there to check off pass rushers, as if Treu hadn’t practiced every day under the exact same system, even starting in that system for most of the ‘01 season? That team was toast against good defensive lines. That’s why Miami beat us earlier that year. Whenever Gannon was put under that kind of pressure, we just folded. The truth is, if Tampa is not in that Super Bowl, we likely play the Eagles or some other cream puff NFC team in the SB, and walk away with our 4th Lombardi, while Tampa struggles in ‘02 with some interim head coach while they await Marriuchi’s arrival in ‘03. But Davis had to ship Gruden as far away from SF as possible to prevent them from getting him, and the rest his history. I guess Al Davis does still GM teams to Super Bowls, Oakglenn. Just teams other than the Raiders…
April 16th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Watch…the Raiders will trade Washington to the Falcons and get their 2nd round pick back. lol. Should have just traded Hall for Washington straight up.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
thec, bush is the long term compliment to mcfadden, and while fargas is here(and healthy……..and productive) bush will be the goallinf/shortyardage RB and 3rd down backup, especially on 3rd and short, but mcfadden is the starter
April 16th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
So…McFadden/Ronnie Brown is not a good Thunder Lightning? McFadden/Jackson? McFadden/Turner?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
TT - The guy you’re talking about is not #1 on any scouting board I’ve seen. Maylock, footballs future, pft, scouts, kiper, none of them. I’m not talking mock draft board - talent boards. Talent regardless of position and or need is hands down Ghoulston, Long or Long on every board. The guy I keep reading about on here is the #2 RB on some boards based on talent but projected to go as the first RB.
This is easy - link us a board where your guy is listed as the #1 player in terms of talent.

G - Raider, regarding that post at that website about Gannon throwing SB 37, notice that MetalstillRides says that he takes this supposed inside info with a grain of salt, but then starts to shill for it as he goes along. I’m guessing he made it all up himself, and never even met any relatives of N. Harris. Even the other die hard fans at that site shot the thread down.
Sad.
I guess we can’t use the Super Bowl loss to criticize Al Davis because it’s long ago and over with, but we can pull it up to suggest that the Raiders were somehow screwed out of winning, rather it be via Barret Robbins not being there to single handily stifle perhaps the best pass rushing D line in NFL history, or via making up rumors about Gannon throwing the game. Unreal.

DraftAce Top 50
1. Darren McFadden RB Arkansas
He’s simply the most dominant and explosive player in the draft.
2. Sedrick Ellis DT USC
With all the talented defensive lineman, Ellis might be the most explosive off the line.
3. Glenn Dorsey DT LSU
A powerful defensive lineman, but not as quick or explosive as Ellis.
4. Chris Long DE Virginia
Long isn’t a sack master, but there isn’t a more consistent player in this draft class.
5. Vernon Gholston DE Ohio State
Gholston may be the most intriguing physical specimen in this draft class.
6. Jonathan Stewart RB Oregon
Injuries are a concern, but he has the potential to be a true workhorse at the next level.
7. Keith Rivers LB USC
Rivers is the only elite prospect at linebacker in this draft class.
8. Phillip Merling DE Clemson
Merling is equally effective getting to the quarterback and stuffing the run.
9. Calais Campbell DE Miami FL
He won’t be drafted this high, but physically, no one can match his potential.
10. Rashard Mendenhall RB Illinois
A big, bruising running back that also has the shiftiness to break off the big run.
11. Ryan Clady OT Boise State
Big enough to be a grinder, but quick enough to be a franchise left tackle.
12. Jake Long OT Michigan
Lacks the quick feet to be a true franchise left tackle, but you can’t deny his consistency.
13. Malcolm Kelly WR Oklahoma
Isn’t a great deep threat, but has the best hands in the draft.
14. Kenny Phillips S Miami FL
A playmaker and a hard hitter that got lost on a bad Miami team last season.
15. Mike Jenkins CB South Florida
Fast enough to match up with anyone, and flashes the ability to be a true playmaker.
16. Chris Williams OT Vanderbilt
Has the size and quickness you look for in a left tackle and is still improving.
17. Felix Jones RB Arkansas
Needs to prove he can carry the load, but there isn’t a more explosive running back in the draft.
18. Quentin Groves DE Auburn
Undersized, but an elite athlete that can get to the quarterback.
19. Tracy Porter CB Indiana
Fast enough to be a true cover corner, and won’t shy away from being physical at the line of scrimmage.
20. Brian Brohm QB Louisville
There isn’t a sure thing at quarterback this year, but Brohm looks like the most complete player.
21. Lawrence Jackson DE USC
Not the sack master he was as a sophomore, but has developed into an even more complete lineman.
22. Dan Connor LB Penn State
Connor is an even better prospect than former teammate Paul Posluszny.
23. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB Tennessee State
Physically he looks like he can do it all, but he needs to prove it again the big boys.
24. Sam Baker OT USC
Not flashy, and probably not a left tackle, but he simply gets the job done.
25. Jeff Otah OT Pittsburgh
A big, tough lineman that may be best suited shifting inside to guard.
26. Jamaal Charles RB Texas
A true home run threat that is still developing and has enormous upside.
27. Aqib Talib CB Kansas
Not the elite athlete he’s made out to be by some, but still a playmaker in the secondary.
28. DaJuan Morgan S N.C State
A physical safety that is slowly climbing up the charts.
29. Dustin Keller TE Purdue
Keller has established himself as the top tight end on the board.
30. Leodis McKelvin CB Troy
A workout warrior, but he is still very raw as a cover corner.
31. Andre’ Woodson QB Kentucky
Not an elite prospect, but he’s smart and could succeed if given a chance to develop.
32. DeSean Jackson WR California
No one stretches the field like DeSean Jackson.
33. Matt Ryan QB Boston College
Has the intangibles, but his incredibly high interception total is a major red flag.
34. Kentwan Balmer DT North Carolina
Not flashy, but a strong player that has shown steady improvement.
35. Branden Albert OG Virginia
Could be an instant starter if he lands in the right situation.
36. Erin Henderson LB Maryland
Looks the part, but so did his brother E.J.
37. Mario Manningham WR Michigan
No one was hurt more by their combine performance.
38. Gosder Cherilus OT Boston College
Strictly a right tackle or guard, but could have a long career at one of those unglamorous positions.
39. Jerod Mayo LB Tennessee
Has the physical ability, but never really stood out in college.
40. Phillip Wheeler LB Georgia Tech
Big, physical and one of the more underrated players in the draft.
41. Limas Sweed WR Texas
Lacks break away speed, but will be a reliable possession receiver.
42. Anthony Collins OT Kansas
Has the ability to line up at every position on the line other than center.
43. James Hardy WR Indiana
Flashes a rare combination of size and speed.
44. Devin Thomas WR Michigan State
A true workout warrior, but he has to prove he can put that athleticism to work on the field.
45. Reggie Smith CB Oklahoma
May be too slow for cornerback, but has experience at safety.
46. Early Doucet WR LSU
Injuries have never allowed him to live up to potential.
47. Chris Johnson RB East Carolina
He won’t be an every down back, but he is the definition of a home run threat.
48. Bruce Davis DE UCLA
A bit of a ‘tweener, but has the athleticism to consistently get to the quarterback.
49. Curtis Lofton LB Oklahoma
Not a flashy player, but the type of guy that is always around the ball.
50. Matt Forte RB Tulane
Put together a standout season, and his workouts are showing he may be the real deal.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Would it be worth it trading our #1 for Cincinnati’s number #1 and Ocho Cinco?
If not that, then what about the original rumor with Stu & Rhodes for Ocho Cinco?
Disclaimer: I admit I could care less for some of his antics, however his talent and work ethic is undeniable. Combined with Walker, Curry, & Carter our WR’s would be awesome again.

No kidding, man. I thought it was a joke. I know it’s just trouts, but I can’t believe Raiders.com let some of those pictures get posted. There were some mega moos in there. Looks like Al’s meddling with the cheerleaders now, too.

Dakota - I’ll take those girls for the O-Line. The defensive line would constantly get flagged for holding. LOL. Penalty on #95 for illegal usage of the hands on the breasts of #62. 15 yard penalty. Penalty on #91 for sexual harrassment. 15 Yard penalty.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
chris henry would come alot cheaper when he gets out
April 16th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
DSM:
We still need to protect JR at QB…We NEED a LT.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
“tryouts”, as opposed to “trouts”, post 180. But…the word “trout” could certainly fit, too.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Thec - Breath brother..haha.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
DSM,…the Raiders should go after Chad asap,…if we dont, hes a Bronco, real soon.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
R8R: I wouldn’t even consider Henry.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Chad Johnson is staying in Cincy…
April 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Good work TT. Still wouldn’t pick him but you have backed up what you said.
Another tidbit - Adam Spanky of NFLN says the Saints want to go to #2 in trade with the Rams. He also says -
“If the Saints did make the trade, what would they do with the No. 2 pick? Schefter reports that New Orleans wants one of the draft’s top defensive players, likely LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey or Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston.
If the trade doesn’t go through, the Rams could take Dorsey, Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long or possibly pull a surprise and select Arkansas running back Darren McFadden.”
Interesting…
April 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Saint,
179 … Too funny!
April 16th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Where’s Al Locasal when you need him…ugh
April 16th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
SaintKaufman - I told you Felix Jones is better than McFadden. lol. Hes the underrated McFadden. The Undercover man. Everyone on the inside knows hes better, they’re just trying to talk everyone into taking McFadden instead so Jones will fall and he comes at a cheaper cost. Geniuses.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Coach:
I’m sure the Saints want Dorsey at #2.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Look, I know you guys won’t be surprised when I say this, considering my incessant bashing of this organization, but it’s really the truth. The 49ers really do have the hottest cheerleaders in the league. I am not a 49er fan, and don’t care for their organization. I am a Raider fan, despite my vocal criticism. But the Niners cheerleaders are fine as hell. They’re about all I watched at that preseason game at the stick last August, and they were bundled up in winter gear. I would love to see them in better weather, half naked.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
8.4 million dollar cap hit if Bungholes trade him prior to June 1…CJ is not going to be traded prior to the draft. That retard needs to get it through his head that he is stuck there at least until June 1.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
MaddenRaider - lol. I think AD would at least pick some good lookin girls no? Besides…one moo on AD’s lap and its over. Go with the skinny girls if you want to live Al.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Sorry Ballbag,..nobody buyin what your sellin…try again.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Chad is stuck in WKRP
April 16th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
and COW, even mayock is on record as having mcfadden as his #1 overall prospect in the draft, but claims mendenhall is a better pure RB while mcfadden is similar to reggie bush, so while he’s on crack and clearly hasn’t done all his homework on mcfadden, he at least admits mcfadden is the best overall prospect, but mayock and kiper work for TV networks, so what they say is meant to be controversial, maky their statements both incredible and uncredible, mcshay actually works for a legitimate scouting agency, although he has a job on BSPN, so his evaluatio’s are more valid, although i disagree with him alot he is, for the most part, spot on with mcfadden, who he has at #1 overall(as a prospect, but nt the pick, like everyone else in the world, he has mcfadden at #4 to the raiders)
April 16th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Felix jones is it! he is this years Maurice Jones-Drew
April 16th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Nah…Cowgirls and Raiderettes are the hottest. NO DOUBT! Of course…Strippers can be really hot too. Hell…if you’re a pervert, does it really make a difference?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
# Alameda Insider Says:
April 16th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
DSM,…the Raiders should go after Chad asap,…if we dont, hes a Bronco, real soon.
…..
Shannahan would not take Johnson in a million years. He would walk if Denver signed him without his approval. The reason Shanahan dumped Walker is because his attitude is poor and he’s a chemistry killer, and we’re about to get a front row seat to it.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Huff,
You just insist on trying to knock DMac down a few notches. Can so many experts be wrong? Even the real ones?
And another thing I was thinking …
Kiffin took some heat for so called exposing his draft hand a few weeks back. If that thinking is true, why would Al spend hours with the guy he truly wants? Would that be exposing your hand?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
hoochie mama. Coah on Wheels is offering consoling services to any women rejected by the Raiderettes. “It’s okay sweetie…”
Was that Seabass offering to hold that girl’s water for her?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Sorry Oakland, the Raiders will soon be moving back to LA, check this story out…I just hope Oakland does not try to keep the Raider’s name, like Cleveland did:

April 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
To hell with McFadden. Go punch someone and hurt your draft spot already.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
This is what lightning looks like
47. Chris Johnson RB East Carolina
He won’t be an every down back, but he is the definition of a home run threat.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Huff, I’m telling you, the Niners cheerleaders are the hottest. I believe they have the best looking ethnic cheerleaders as well. Cowboys? Without sounding racist, a little too ….flat on the backside for my tastes. I like a little shape on that body. See where I’m going with this, Huff?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
No Madden,..I will have the front row seat,…you will view from your couch.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Gotta go guy, I have to say this has been very entertaining.
DMAC/MBUSH/JRUSS = Nightmare for cotrell…. sorry huff about the nightmare crak
out
April 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
JHill - I am the McFadden expert until the day the Raiders actually draft him and then…I will look like an idiot. Until then…I will be right if we choose another player. lol.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Bring back Gina Marie or some of the hotties from 2001 I’m not buying a calender this year
,
April 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
#202…pure Broncos’ fan…no doubt about it.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Jerry, for goodness sake tell Al where to shove his pick.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
I can’t deny it TT - Maylock may be on crack.
The Dolphins cheerleader tryouts on NFLN last year was like Cinamax after 10pm - ouch.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
JHill - Kiffin speaks the truth and you beat around the bush of truth. Kiffin knows what this team needs just like everyone else. Those that feel the Raiders aren’t good enough to go anywhere this year, want to take a skill player because they want to be entertained.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
AI, are you bragging about blowing your money on this Raider team?
April 16th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
MaddenRaider - What do you say the Raiders move to the hard knocks of Richmond? lol.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

MaddenRaider - I like women who are hot. I’ll just pick out the ones I like man and it could be from any of the 32 teams for all I care. Hot girl walkin down the street? Yeah…her too.
