Mocking the draft
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 25th, 2008 at 12:15 pm in Oakland Raiders.
One of my favorite moments from Lane Kiffin’s press conference Thursday came when the coach was asked to compare this year’s draft to previous ones in terms of depth of talent.
“I don’t know if I’m the right person to answer that,” Kiffin said. “I haven’t been doing this for a lot of years, so I don’t know if it would be a fair assessment for me to give that to you.”
Amen.
Look, I’ll play along and give you a guess on how the first round may go Saturday. But make no mistake, this is about as uniformed as it gets.
There are some exceptions, of course _ Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News comes to mind _ but many of us are doing the same things fans are doing. Leafing through draft books, reading reports on the Internet as if it were a Daily Racing Form, then going to the window to place our bets.
I’ve never had video of a football player in my home. I see plenty of football on Sundays so I’m usually busy with my kids on Saturday _ unless I’m traveling to a game. The only time I ever saw JaMarcus Russell play beginning to end last season was in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame.
I went to the combine and got to ask a few scouts and GMs about players, and that counts for something, I guess. But when you hear someone like Mike Lombardi, a former Raiders personnel executive, give sound reasoning for why Oakland will select Darren McFadden, as he did on the CNN-SI Web site, it carries considerably more weight then my stubborn stance of going defense.
There is no bigger joke in the profession than making report cards before any of the players have ever played a down. I’ve done them reluctantly in the past when requested, but you won’t find one here Sunday.
So mock if you wish . . . here goes nothing, and feel free to post your own mock drafts. One of you industrious souls will probably keep score and post the standings:
1. Miami Dolphins–OT Jake Long, Michigan.
You know, I actually feel pretty good about this one.
2. St. Louis Rams–DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU.
One G.M. told me he is clearly the best defensive player on the board.
3. Atlanta Falcons–DE Chris Long, Virginia.
Yeah, I know the Falcons already have John Abraham and Jamal Anderson, but Long might be the closest thing to a sure thing when taking health into account, and Atlanta can’t afford to flame out on Matt Ryan.
4. Oakland Raiders–DE Vernon Gholston, Ohio State.
I think they’d rather have Dorsey or Chris Long, or trade for additional picks using Darren McFadden as the bait. Short of that, I’m going down with this ship.
5. Kansas City Chiefs–G-T Branden Albert, Virginia.
Larry Johnson needs some help in Herm Edwards’ three-yards-and-a-cloud of dust conservative offense.
6. New York Jets–RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas.
Lots of nightclubs in Manhattan, not enough touchdowns in the Meadowlands.
7. New England Patriots–CB Leodis McKelvin, Troy
Replacement for Asante Samuel. If Al Davis didn’t already have DeAngelo Hall and Nnamdi Asomugha, he’d love the speed of this guy.
8. Baltimore Ravens–QB Matt Ryan, Boston College
John Harbaugh gets a quarterback to build a team around.
9. Cincinnati Bengals–DT Sedrick Ellis, USC
Would be a good fit for the Raiders, but not at No. 4.
10. New Orleans Saints–CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee State
If he had both kidneys, he might go before McKelvin. He still might.
11. Buffalo Bills–WR Devin Thomas, Michigan State
At some point between the combine and draft day, he apparently became the top receiver on everybody’s board. Why? Who knows?
12. Denver Broncos–OT Ryan Clady, Boise State
Familiarity with zone blocking system makes him an instant starter at left or right tackle.
13. Carolina Panthers–OT Jeff Otah, Pittsburgh
Panthers looking seirously at Barry Sims, so you know they need a tackle.
14. Chicago Bears–RB Jonathan Stewart, Oregon
Officially marks the end of the Cedric Benson disaster.
15. Detroit Lions–DE Derrick Harvey, Florida
Having given up on Kalimba Edwards, Rod Marinelli tries to find an edge rusher.
16. Arizona Cardinals–Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois
With Edgerrin James having only a couple of oil changes remaining, Ken Whisenhunt gets the new model.
17. Kansas City Chiefs–DE Phillip Merling, Clemson
Pick from Vikings in exchange for Jared Allen is used for Allen’s replacement.
18. Houston Texans–CB Aqib Talib, Kansas
Starting corner Dunta Robinson is injured, so Texans put aside supposed character concerns.
19. Philadelphia Eagles–OT Chris Williams, Vanderbilt
Eagles plagued by protection issues for Donovan McNabb.
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers–WR DeSean Jackson, Cal
Joey Galloway has to slow down at some point, doesn’t he? Jackson is the logical successor.
21. Washington Redskins–CB Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech
Shawn Springs is showing signs of wear and is getting too expensive.
22. Dallas Cowboys–RB Felix Jones, Arkansas
Assuming the Cowboys don’t trade up for McFadden, they get his running mate instead to pair with Marion Barber.
23. Pittsburgh Steelers–LB Keith Rivers, USC
Not a position of need for Pittsburgh, but the Steelers can’t resist a good linebacker.
24. Tennessee Titans–CB Mike Jenkins, South Florida
Titans hope he’ll simply make plays and let someone else make it rain.
25. Seattle Seahawks–T Gosder Cheriulus, Boston College
It’s nice to have Walter Jones, but the Seahawks need a young bookend and eventual anchor.
26. Jacksonville Jaguars–DE Lawrence Jackson, USC
Jack Del Rio can’t resist a fellow Trojan who can rush the passer.
27. San Diego Chargers–S Kenny Phillips, Miami
Chargers need a quality safety _ Phillips may be a reach here, but could be best available.
28. Dallas Cowboys–CB Antoine Cason, Arizona
Because they’re rolling the dice on Pacman Jones, Cason is the counterpoint character guy.
29. San Francisco 49ers–WR Limas Sweed, Texas
A big, physical target who can learn from Isaac Bruce.
30. Green Bay Packers–QB Chad Henne, Michigan
Someone to put pressure on Aaron Rodgers as the successor for Brett Favre.
31. New England Patriots–Vacant
Might sign a new cameraman.
32. New York Giants–LB Jerod Mayo, Tennessee
For no other reason than he keeps popping up in this spot on other mock drafts.

BREAKING NEWS………..or not…….Yesterday I, along with many other executives in the marketing department, recieved a memo advising everyone to prepare for the addition of either Chris Long or Darren McFadden, the jerseys for the player selected with the Raiders #1 Draft pick have already begun production, the production will be finalized on Sunday and the first shipment fo jerseys for said player will be available for purchase on Monday, May 5th.
Does this mean we are certain to draft one of these guys? Maybe not, the memo in question left open the possibility for unknown players acquired in trades or with a later draft pick acquired in trade, but the fact is the organization made a point to emphasize Chris Long and Darren McFadden by name in order to prepare the marketing department for potential impact. Basically, if we stay put with the #4 pick in the draft, we will be taking either Chris Long or Darren McFadden, in no particular order of preference, at least not that is mentioned. Al Davis is widely speculated, including within the organization, to favor McFadden, so, if he is there, he has a very good chance be the choice, but should McFadden be off the board, possibly do to the rumored rade scenario in which the Jets move up to acquire him, Long will be the pick. I just thought this would be interesting, not necessarily because it’s news but because it seems to confirm much of the speculation. It’s either McFadden, Long, or trade down. So I guess we can all be happy………….
April 25th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Thank god Jerry aint making the pick on Saturday.
April 25th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Just heard the Michael Bush interview on siris NFL radio. When Adam Schien asked him if he were ready to play he stated”I am like a caged bull waiting to be unleashed” He also stated he would have no problem sharing a backfield with McFadden if Oak drafts him.
April 25th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
TRADE THE PICK!!
April 25th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
OakGlenn
Are we going to have a mod here Saturday? I don’t want that ? to be messing this blog up, we have all participated in the last few months and don’t need to have our day ruined.
Please clean up this guy, and let us blog with out the derelect childish posts that he writes.
I know a lot of bloggers feel the same way, just don’t say.
April 25th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
TT
Will the jersey’s with the wrong pick go overseas to a charity like the 19-0 Patriot Super Bowl gear?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
TT,
That is exciting news.
April 25th, 2008 at 12:40 pm

April 25th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
the name and # will not be printed until sunday, and will be available for purchase the following monday
April 25th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
The question you have to ask is why would someone spend so much time here trying to ruin things??? What kind of sad awful life would you have to have to do that?? And I mean spend hours and hours under different names, just to be a problem. He doesn’t get me upset, I’m actually kind of humored by how effed up he is. Sucks to be him. Expect him here tomorrow to try to really ruin things tho.
April 25th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
you’re right oak, it’s almost an honor to have people who hate us so much still seem to have such a great interest in us……..
April 25th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
And look how great it was going. Good ol’ Cybil. Oh well, man I cant wait to see who we pick.
April 25th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
But make no mistake, this is about as uniformed as it gets.
There are some exceptions, of course _ Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News comes to mind _
Sorry Jerry, are you claiming that Rick is an exception in that he truly is informed, or that he’s so ludicrously uninformed that he’s one of a few exceptions to your previous statement “this is about as uniformed as it gets”?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Rams are taking Chris Long…Carriker cannot move back outside 1 year after beefing up 40lbs to go inside.
Dean Dorsey will be there at #3 for Atlanta….Gholston or McFadden for us to choose between.
April 25th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Exactly Tommy!!! There’s a native american expression that you’re greatness is judged by how powerful your enemies are. If that’s the case, we’re pretty low on the totem pole, judging from that imbecile.
April 25th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Hey, we’re all still here, we’re all having fun. Take Chris Long!!!!
April 25th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
So Random Drugtester, you don’t think STL might consider drafting Dorsey and placing him in the middle with Carriker?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
they run 3-4 predominantly don’t they? Everything I read said they would have to choose between drafting a DT and moving Carriker outside…or a DE and leaving him inside.
Doubtful he can move back outside having put on 40lbs and nursing a shoulder injury. But what do I know? lol
April 25th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Plus their DE’s are getting old and worn out
April 25th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
OK,
So we trade Washington to Atlanta for Norwood and swap picks, telling Atlanta they can have McFadden and we then get Long.
ST Louis goes Dorsey or Gholston.
We get Norwood, basically McFadden, although I would rather have Jamaal Charles over both of them, but Norwood has plenty of SPEED and Atlanta gets a very good CB which none are worth at the #3 spot and all they have to do is move down 1 pick which they can use on Dorsey, Gholston, Ryan or Ellis?
I’m reaching here, eh?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
…and then Atlanta trades down with the Jets, taking Ronald McDonald at #6, right behind Crusty the Clown!
April 25th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
saintkaufman that is a good idea from what I have seen of Norwood he has the speed and may be good for our return game.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Saint that is a reach. sorry bretheren.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I know Thec, Crusty will go in the top 3!
April 25th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
J-mac put the c-pipe down. you know we are taking DMAC. Jets and cowgirls both sit tight.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Pretty accurate mock draft, except picks #4 and #6 switch ‘em. We’ve been guessing this pick for about 2-3 months. LOOK the pick is MacDaddy. The only thing we should be predicting is what jersey number he’ll be wearing for the Raiders. I’ll be the first to say #20. Like I said a few blogs ago, Im hyped!! My birthday and the nfl draft are 2 days out of the year I’ll call off work. Im making those roster updates for Madden. Maybe we all should say a team prayer tonight before going to sleep. And the Raider Nation said,,, Amen. YA KNOW?!
April 25th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
rick-#32
April 25th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
TT - You’ll be happy to hear that I’m thinking McFadden over Gholston (…I must be damn crazy! …I should be over this spell tomorrow). But McFadden comes after Chris Long and Sedrick Ellis.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I’m being sucked up by the hype. I can sense my vunerability. I have to beat this thing.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
no problems there terp, those are the top 3 players on my board
but it will be mcfadden or long, more likely mcfadden
refer to #8……..
April 25th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Pin,
Breathe big fella! Drink a beer, smoke a joint, do something.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
if it’s mcfadden he’ll wear #32, if it’s long he’ll wear either 91 or 75, 75 would be the smart marketing choice…..
April 25th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
You can’t go all of this way to give in at the finish line. We will NEVER let you live it down, well, until McFadden has a 3 TD game!
April 25th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
McFadden,Long,Gholston,Dorsey
Many posts pro and con regarding these players the past couple of months. It is great to see the passion of The Raider Nation regarding these players I have my own opinion of who we should take and I have posted it before.
I just have one small request for Al Davis.
Do not I repeat DO NOT let Chris Long fall to the Chiefs. That would really ruin my day and I am sure 99% of you fellow Raider fans.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Terrapin
You have been broken like a Mustang horse, don’t go there!
Breathe in and out, think about what your saying.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
We need to draft down to pick up a few more picks and increase our odds of landing at least 2 longterm starters. Outside of a trade, my Raiders draft preference is Dorsey, CLong, Ellis, Clady, McFadden, Gholston.
But please Al, take the extra picks for any trade where we move down to the 7-15 range of first round.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
blandafan:
Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News is so uninformed about anything that it is amazing that he still has a job.

MERRIMAN DENIES RUMORS OF SUSPENSION
Posted by Mike Florio on April 25, 2008, 4:21 p.m.
We’ve been receiving e-mails for a couple of weeks now regarding rumors that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman is in line for another suspension, either for violation of the substance abuse policy or the policy against steroids and related substances.
Merriman strongly denies the rumors.
“I would know, if anybody,” Merriman told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “If I failed a drug test or steroids test I’d be the first one to know about it. And after it being leaked the first time, I don’t think someone would be holding back the results this time.”
We didn’t post the rumor because that’s precisely the kind of rumor that can get someone sued.
So, anyway, the rumors aren’t true. Merriman has not failed (another) drug test, and he’s not in line for (another) suspension.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Is it Christmas yet???
April 25th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
I would trade down for a first and a second, and then take Clady in the first round and a defensive lineman in the second round. I would then move Kwame Harris to right guard. That fixes our offensive and defensive lines, and we still have Michael Bush as new talented running back.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Kwame Harris must be rejoicing not to face Merriman and Allen for the rest of the season!!
April 25th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I think its just a temporary lapse Saint. I’ve just had way too much on my mind. Gholston just scares me man. 7 of his 14 sacks came in 2 games. He just so inconsistent and lacks a high end motor like the others. Again, if we are “stuck” with the pick I’ll go with this priority list for now: 1. Long 2. Ellis 3. McFadden 4. Gholston/Harvey
April 25th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
so where does The King get drafted then? I’ve seen some of his highlights…he can do it all.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Dont do it Terrapin! Stay away from the light!
April 25th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Kirk, Cooper Carlisle is a far better ZBS guard than Harris (or Gallery for that matter). If Harris needs to go inside it will be to LG after we cut Gallery or trade him.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
I’m breathen …i’m breathen …gotta break this spell. I’m strong. I’ll come back to my senses.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
once upon a time in the west I know it wouild ruin mine.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
AMEN OUATITW RE post 43
April 25th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
If we are swinging for the fences, let’s go with Gholston because he has the biggest upside but if Long’s available take him.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
I’m with you Terrapin.
I knew you’d shake it.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
If the pick is Long no way he gets #75 because there are a lot of Howie jerseys out there and they wouldn’t have to buy a new one
April 25th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Saint
Hope your still out there, I believe the draft board will get messed up if STL takes Dorsey, then Atlanta has a problem, I know they want Dorsey, look at their roster at DT, they invested Millions of dollars in Abraham at RDE, C. Long plays that side also.
Moving one of them wil not be a option, the value of signing Abraham was to play the RDE and they signed him for mega bucks. Plus gave up draft choices.
Atlanta will not take Gholston, they need a homerun.
Trade is 50-50, my thought is Chris redmond, Joey harrington at QB, when possibly the best Qb in the draft is sitting right there.
The smart play is QB and with all of their second picks they can secure a good but not dominating DT.
We have before us, Gholston, Long, DMAC.
Do we trade down, just i to two spots and still get possibly one of them or have they planned for Ellis in a lower spot.
The pick that the Rams play will definetly change the board.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Everywhere I read I hear that Gholston and Harvey and both awesome athletes but are also still considered projects. With the #4 overall that makes Long the only viable DE.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Bo Knew, you probably know more than I do.
I just don’t want Kwame Harris as our left offensive tackle. I know Coach Cable knows his business, but Harris is from Jamaica for God’s sake! Do you really want a left tackle with a Jamaican attitude?
Come soon, mon!

April 25th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
The entire draft is contingent upon what the Lambs do. They could take Dorsey/Chris Long or trade out. They could trade with New Orleans, or Atlanta. That #2 pick is the one to watch. Atl is not going to take Matt Ryan. They will move up one spot to take Dorsey, or take Sedrick Ellis at 3 overall.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
I still say trade down and draft LB Keith Rivers and get more picks!
I will be happy with McDadden, or Chris Long but I would rather trade down and stockpile more picks while picking up one of the best LB’s coming out of the draft.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Dell,
How you doing?
The Song Remains the Same. We’re coming down the home stretch and people are starting to scatter.
Needs - DE, OT, DT, WR, ILB, S, WB, HDV, RB

4. Raiders - DE Chris Long
5. Chiefs - DE Vernon Gholston
6. Jets - RB Darren McFadden
7. Patriots - CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
8. Ravens - QB Matt Ryan
9. Bengals - WR Devin Thomas
10. Saints - LB Keith Rivers
So how does my list hold up 3 weeks later?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
1. J Long
2. C Long
3. G Dorsey
4. D MAC
April 25th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I think I figured it out…
The Raiders are going to try and trade down to get more picks (duh), but the player that they are targeting in Sedrick Ellis. They spent a week with him at the Senior Bowl where he impressed everyone, and Kiffin coached him at USC. They get more picks and they get the guy that they had targeted the whole time.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Raider Dogg too bad the raiders wont see it that way
April 25th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
bo knew, it’s fair to complain about gallery’s penalties but since moving to guard he is by far our best offensive lineman
April 25th, 2008 at 1:43 pm

I know I had you convince of McFadden for one day a couple of months ago…come on home brotha, join us in our happiness when we draft McFadden tomorrow!
April 25th, 2008 at 1:45 pm

As you say if they trade the pick to NO, my play of draft order is in play, NO is going to take Dorsey,
and why would Atlanta who needs to rebuild, make a trade with STL, makes no sense to me.
I’m thinking, Chris Redmond who was out of football prior to last season or Joey???
Matt Ryan will be considered more than you believe.
They have not mentioned Ellis, and as an organization they need a home run hitter like Ryan or Dorsey.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:45 pm

April 25th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

This is True. We do share our #1 wish though (I think) in Chris Long….do we?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

The rumor of Dakota having a threesome is more truthful and believeable.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
no no no to the ghost
April 25th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
If C Long and Dorsey are already gone, the Raiders should draft Mcfadden and trade down just a couple of spots. If Gholston is who they want, they can get him and maybe pick up a draft choice as well. Gholtston could be a risk of taking an athelete over a football player.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
To tell you the truth, I could see the Raiders trading down and taking Rivers or Ellis. I think it will all depend on how the trades workout, and where the Raiders end up with their 1st pick in the 1st round. A Dallas trade moves them waaay down in the 1st, and blows my theory to pieces…
April 25th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
I got a good feeling that Al and Kiff have this whole thing figured out, man I haven’t felt like this since xmas of 88′, I can’t wait for tomorrow!~ I really like that fact that Bush said he is like a caged bull ready to go. Does this pump anyone else up? Who needs a McFAD if we already have one in the Bush?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Oh, well allow me to retort.
Needs - DE, OT, DT, WR, ILB, S, WB, HDV, RB
WB = WaterBoy
HDV = Hot Dog Vendor

April 25th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

ESPN is reporting that the NFL Draft has been delayed one week due to some riots in New York…what the HECK is that all about?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
The reaction of Terrapin has messed me up, to think of changing his mind for DMAC.

Prediction tiiime! 4th pick; McFadden. Jersey # 20. Fabian Washington traded for a 2nd or 3rd round pick. We pick a diamond in the rough D-lineman in later rnd. Lamont Jordan looks for a job. Everybody’s happy. We pop some bottles (youngsters soda bottles). The media still criticizes. We win 10 games. The Media shuts the F*@k up. Let the Raider Nation say,,,Amen. YA KNOW?!

Is Gholston your choice or do you have a different scenario in mind?
April 25th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Roseville,
The whole world is betting Uncle AL won’t trade down. It make too much sense, but it’s what I’m hoping for. Trade back into the middle of the first, acquire a second and look for depth at WR.

April 25th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Gholston to the Chiefs is a perfect scenario, then we get to face him twice a year, and run, run, run all over him.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
rick, not sure about the # but that sounds about right

I totally agree except instead of WR depth in the 2nd, pick DT Trevor Laws in the 2nd and draft WR depth later on in the draft…
April 25th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I would like to get Chris Long, but I really wouldn’t mind any of these players. It all depends on how they’re used, particulairly players like Gholston and McFadden who can be used in different ways, I worry the Raiders will misuse these tyoes of players.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Robert Gallery, and all world college left tackle. drafted by the Raiders and immediately moved to the right side.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
bart, gholston IS a great run stopper, one thing noone talks about is he’s only played DE for 2 years, before that he played offensive lineman and linebacker, so if he can become an elite college DE in two years, what can he do over the course of an NFL career, gholston is great, let’s hope he’s not a chief……..let’s hope matt ryan is a chief

April 25th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Vernon Gholston???????????????? Why the hell would anyone wish to pay him top four money? LTs in the league will sew him up unless they are otherwise occupied, and FB’s will trounce him. Very bad idea.
I suppose someone will suck on that work-out warrior lemon. Sure hope it ain’t us.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
that’s what we’re looking at…..
April 25th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Gholston WAS a great run stopper in college, I have doubts about his ability to do it against the pros. He is a project player, and initially we will be running over him, so I aint worried about us facing him. That being said, them picking Matt Ryan would be much preferred.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I think the big question is ” Are any of these guys really worth the money ” ? I don’t know if they are so good that you good dump a tremendous amount of cash on them. Many of these early round picks don’t live up to expectations. The Troy Aikmans and Barry Sanders are few and far between I’m afraid.

TommyTrojan,
read your words re memo from headquarters about jersey names, just curious that Kiffin has made a point of not talking about Ellis at all post-Senior Bowl.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
M,
I think alot of us have been noticing/commenting on that. If the Raiders can trade out of the #4, then I gotta think Ellis would immediately be first on their board, which explains the reason for not mentioning him at all. It just seems strange to me, that none of these journalists thought to ask Kiffin, who the raiders would target if we could trade down.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Lol. Lamont Jordan just called me. He said he didnt appreciate my last comment about him getting a job. I told him I live in West Palm Beach Fl. and that I could help him get a job for the Dolphins. Apparently they need a few people to bite towels for them. Then he hung up on me! Was I wrong for that? I cant sleep tonight. Im ready. YA KNOW?!
April 25th, 2008 at 2:39 pm

He hasn’t mentioned Keith Rivers since coaching him at the Senior Bowl either. I’m convinced that if the Raiders do trade down that they will pick Keith.
I thoroughly enjoy attempting to read between the lines of all the coach speak and smokescreens that exist this time of year. In the end somebody’s going to be right. Maybe you and Dell are right, maybe the Raiders have been targeting Ellis all along…
April 25th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
BARTBridgeBalla,
I thought nearly everyone here mentioned only two names, Dakota’s Love Child and Baby Howie. I’ve been out of blogdom for a couple of weeks so I may have missed some of the allusions to anyone else.

if someone trades ahead of us for mcfadden-long
if we trade down to #6-ellis
if we trade down to #6 and gholston is available-gholston
if we trade down to #8-rivers
if we trade down to #8 and rivers is gone-clady
if we stay at #4 and mcfadden is available-mcfadden
if we trade down further-too many possibilities to contemplate in this blog right now
April 25th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Kiff recruited Ellis to USC. If he has his way, Ellis will be a Raider. There are no if’s ands or but’s about it. If you look back to senior bowl week, elis actually had more buzz then dorsey. Bring back the USC Connection!
April 25th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

April 25th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Let’s take a quick poll:
Will the Raiders win another SB with Russell/McFadden?
Your intuitive insight is much appreciated!
April 25th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Just a quick aside…Do the Dolphins truly believe that they’ll be able to get a 1st rounder for Jason Taylor? A long-in-the-tooth player that is due 17 mil. next year. Good luck with all that!
April 25th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
I’m cool with whatever AL wants as long as it’s trading down for more picks. We need more than 5 picks to make a run at the division.

April 25th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Anyone hear DMC’s former coach on BSPN earlier? He gave him an awesome vote of confidence. Sounds like he did that for several teams that he spoke with too.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
I dont know about Keith Rivers for this team. I’ll admit I haven’t seen much of him but is he really gonna be that much of an improvement over Robert Thomas?
April 25th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Jason Taylor is currently talking with the chokers about a new contract. The Chokers are seriously considering giving up their 1st or 2nd and a pick next year to get him! lets hope he is VERY long in the tooth.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
951, dorsey wasn’t in the senior bowl, that’s why he had more buzz, but i do agree he’s the better player of the two
April 25th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Rivers is a very good tackling LB. He has had problems with elusive RB’s and quick TE’s in short passing patterns. he gets too out of possition. I think the current LB’s would fix that problem and he would be a STUD SAM!
April 25th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Is it Saturday yet????
April 25th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Some of the funniest stuff I ever read were the contracts for RBs, namely TD for the Donks, LJ for the fuKCs and Shaun for the Seachumps. Done, out and gone.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
what does SAM mean?
April 25th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
SAM is strong side LB
April 25th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Mike is middle LB, and WILL is weak side LB

April 25th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
I don’t know that another 230lb linebacker is gonna help our linebacking ‘firm’. Some run-stuffing at the line would work wonders for them, and a big SAM might help, but I see Rivers as a better fit at the WILL position. Plus “the law firm of Morrison, Howard and Rivers” doesn’t have the same ring to it.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Watch what happens: we draft Chris Long and Ryan puts him at DE. Ryan the decides that Richardson can play OLB and he end up there. 3 years from now, after playing Richardson at DE, DT, and OLB, we let him go al a Brayton.

April 25th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
marketing dept told to prepare jerseys for Dmac and Long huh?
Nice….I still think St Louis should take Long….they need DE’s badly and the run a 4-3….not a 3-4….Carriker is too big and slow to move outside now
April 25th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

You are on the mark. I know Dorsey has a great reputation and a lot of PR. Ellis on the other hand hasn’t had the PR but he’s a player. He’s 1″ shorter than Dorsey BUT that’s all Dorsey has on him. Ellis is 10-15# heavier, did 37 bench reps to Dorsey’s 27 and can play BOTH 3-4 & 4-3, which Dorsey can’t. Kiffin has to know almost better than anyone, what Ellis can do and how much upside he really has. In the senior bowl, he was unblockable. He’s got GREAT hand skills already and Maycock rated him equal to or better than Dorsey. He & Kelley together in the middle will be more than a force to deal with.
Every time I’ve suggested Ellis, my parade gets rained on “he’s not good enough for the 4th pick” or ” He’s a reach at #4″. Not in my opinion! I don’t care what position they draft him at as long as it is him. He’s got a motor that doesn’t stop and he’s the closest thing in this year’s draft to a SURE thing. He will make Burgess and J Rich stars with double digit sacks. The run game will be stuffed and there will be no pocket for the opposing QB’s to step up into.
I just hope you are right and Ellis is the guy. And, if we get a pick or two extra from trading down, great - that’s just frosting on the cake.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
McFadden signed a deal with Nike yesterday. If anyone cares.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
I am officially off the “bash DMC” wagon. I have made all the fuss about not wanting him that I intend to prior to the draft.
That being said……Does anyone think he would be rated so high if AP didn’t have the year he had last year? If AP came out and flopped like Reggie his 2nd year, would the DMC conversation even be happening?
April 25th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
I think we have plenty of servicable RB’s. DT or DE should be addressed based on whose there at 4. I don’t know if I can watch all day Sat. if we only have 1 pick
April 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
TT
You hit my wish right on the head. That is the main reason I didn’t want DMC. I think Ellis would COMPLETE our D. You can’t double team the whole eff’n line! With Ellis and Kelly rushing the Middle (each taking at least a chuck from the tackle and full on effort from the gaurds) Burgess is back in the Pro Bowl sitting on 14-18 sacks and Rich is a near miss with 8-10.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
But let’s talk football, ok Madden?
Again, I think we’re doomed with Al Davis running things. He can’t manage a team. He’s already ran Kiffin out, and we’ll probably never be able to hire a real head coach again. We need to protest. Do not watch the draft tomorrow, and certainly do NOT buy the jersey of whoever we draft. We have to hit this organization where it hurts.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

We’ll Know who we’re taking tomorrow. This will sound crazy, but pay attention to the color of the suit McFadden’s wearing tomorrow. If he already has a heads up about the Raiders taking him, Im almost sure he’ll be sporting a nice black suit, the same way Russell had one on last year, even Robert Gallery was wearing team colors on draft day. Keith Rivers is listed at 6′2″ 241 lbs, he isn’t an undersized lb by any means. I also think that he would succeed as a Sam or as a Will. The dude is a beast and he is only going to get better. He gets after it.
What up OG!

Let’s just talk football here.
3 trophies, it’s me, the real Oakglenn. I’m just being realistic about this team. We need to hit Al Davis where it hurts. Protest. Damn chorker fans in the know are scred of DMAC. But what is interesting is they dont expect MBUSH. Its like he fell off the map.
MBUSH is a MOAB = Mother Of All Bombs. A MOAB or bunker buster can be “nuclear tipped” = MBUSH Angry ready to get started.
WMD = Weapon of Mass Destruction.

Thanks AJ for hiring Norv, you just assured your team will return to oblivion within 2 years….oh wait, this is his second year isn’t it..hehehehehehehe

Well 951, at least there are two of us who are waving the Ellis flag. I know I definitely want him playing for us rather than against us. He is, without a doubt, going to be a regular at the Pro Bowl. I just want him to be OUR Pro Bowler. He’s the kind of guy that makes all around him play better. He will make the D stand out in spite of RR.

Thec

April 25th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Why can they not get rid of that stupid effing idiot that is ruining their site????? Why can’t they do that??? Like the technology doesn’t exist????
April 25th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Thec,
My ex-wife’s sister lives in Mira Mesa. Her kids went to Mira Mesa H.S. Is the Top Gun School still there?
April 25th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
DMC’s old College coach was on BSPN earlier and said it would be best for him to get far away from his family and “others” who could bring him down. Don’t think ATL would want to take a chance keeping him so close to home.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Ex,
The marines took over the base a few years back. “top gun” moved to VA.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Sorry you guys that that stupid 5 year old thinks that’s funny or that he pisses me off. I have obviously blown his sad mind if he has to come in here every hour and try to discredit me. He lost the war. big time. That’s obvious.

A reminder of who is in charge tomorrow!

April 25th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Prediction tiiime! Fabian Washington traded to Seahawks for DT. Marcus Tubbs. Stu Schwiegert traded to somewhere for a 3rd rnd pick (lol) uh oh! Lamont Jordan’s calling me back! Gotta go. Be back. YA KNOW?!
April 25th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Agree, EXLA. Al is always in charge. Which is why we should be worried.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Thank you Thec. Obviously he got run out of here again. What a shame for the rest of us that want to discuss the draft. The mods better be here tomorrow other wise fraud boy is going to do what he can to ruin everything.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Todd McShay of BSPN says Gholston should be a #15 pick!!
Iv’e heard enough …..Dont pick Gholston…..Too much of a risk at #4!!!
Go with Long, Dorsey or DMAC!!!
April 25th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
If we draft McFadden, we won’t use him, anyway. Kiffin will be gone after this year. Lofton is not going to run the ball. He’s going to air it out, to stay out of Al’s dog house. So, McFadden will just collect dust.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
M, I thought maybe this guy was you, lol.

Prediction time……
Raiders will not trade w/Jets for 6. That would leave the jets with no pick until the forth. (thinking they give up their 2nd this year to move up.)
KC jumps Oakland to get C Long with the 3rd pick in the draft.
Raiders trade with Balt at 8 and pick up their 2nd (38th overall). Raiders pick Sedrick Ellis DT from USC.
With the 38th they pick Lawerence Jackson DE from USC.
Defense set for 5 years, period.
Trade Washington, Stu, and Rhodes for additional 2nd or 3rd picks and take a OT/WR.
With one of the comp picks, take a flier on speed to satisfy big al.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
EVERYONE OAKGLENN IS OUT FOR THE NIGHT SO, ANYTHING FROM HERE ON OUT IS MADDENLOSER. Dude, I obviously fritzed your stupid brain, huh loser???
April 25th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Ring-Ring. Ring-Ring…
Is that Baltimore and New York calling?
TRADE DOWN
April 25th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
RaiderNation951–good to see the nation represented out in Riverside County. I hung out quite a bit in “Manila Mesa,” “Rancho Pinoysquitos,” and the South Bay. Pinoys are here in the Vegas Valley too…we just got our first Seafood City here last year…
Finally…nearly four months of waiting come down to the last 19 hours before we finally end all of the speculation, discussing, pontificating, insulting, and flat out arguing…we’ll finally see who we’re going to draft or do with that #4 overall pick…
I’ll be watching ESPN with the rest of you at noon tomorrow…enjoy the weekend Nation!
April 25th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
McFadden is the pick!!
Rams….C.Long
Atlanta….Dorsey
Raiders….DMAC!!!!!!
Im positive!!
Forget gholston!!
April 25th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
222 is not me, guys.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
I have class tomorrow…..I feel a scratchy throat and fever coming on already…(cough….sniff). Too bad I have already missed too much to blow it off. I have to TiVo the first hour or so. Lets hope it starts out like last year and picks up 30 or so minutes late.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
RN951 — KC certainly has the picks to jump ahead of the Raiders to nab C. Long. I think that would make #4 even more valuable.
It would also put us in position to possibly trade with a different team that would then be one pick behind us.
Trade the #4 and grab ELLIS
April 25th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Funny how all the NFL teams that want to trade up all want DMAC!!
Notice that!!
Does’nt that say something!!!
The Jets, The Patsies, The Cowboys……..They all want DMAC!!
April 25th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
951, DUI class?
April 25th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Glory
See post 221. This would be a great scenario. And, it makes total sense. Ellis is the smartest move plus we get a #2 which we direly need.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Ellis
Ellis
Ellis
Ellis
Ellis
You don’t want to see the tantrum that I will throw tomorrow if Ellis doesn’t take the stage to hold up that S&B # 1 Jersey.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Ellis would be nice, where do we then trade Kelly since they play the same position?
April 25th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
BAD NEWS gents …looks like everyone is now saying Chris Long to the freakin’ Rams.
But here’s the kicker …Atlanta is seriously looking at drafting Ryan which means Oakland has Dorsey/Gholston/McFadden to choose from. We know we are not picking Dorsey but the value of the #4 and #5 picks increase dramatically. A trade down maybe in store.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Glory
Told you the other night that I’d be back waving the Ellis flag. I’mmmmm Baaack. LOL. ELLIS IS THE SMART PICK.
Defense wins Championships.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I doubt there has ever in history been anything like the pre draft chatter this blog dredged up.
Do any other teams have anything like this?
April 25th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
JB,
If we trade down….Ellis would be the guy were waiting for…..but if we trade down only to have another team jump ahead of us and snag ELLIS, we will be sittin there stupid….with EGG all over our face!!!
Not worth the risk!!
Make a selection at #4!! Dorsey, Long or DMAC!!
April 25th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
History and math…..yuck! Trying to finish my d@mn B.S. Over-acheiving wife just finished 2 PhD’s and is busting my b@((s. Can’t get my Corvette until B.S. is in hand.

Seen a few other blogs — nothing competes to this for content and humor.

Dakota,
Ellis can/has played the nose. He and
