Kiffin: McFadden our guy all along
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, April 26th, 2008 at 1:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said Arkansas running back Darren McFadden was the man he was hoping for all along, and that the club even discussed scenarios in which they would move up from No. 4 if they were afraid someone else was poised to select him.
McFadden was informed in a conversation with Kiffin Saturday morning he would be the pick if available _ hence the absence of a phone call in the moments before the draft. The Raiders coach said McFadden was not drafted on behalf of someone else and would not be traded for additional seelctions.
Kiffin said McFadden gives the Raiders an explosive presence in both the running and receiving game, and that there wasn’t much thought given to selecting defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey because the club has already committed to Tommy Kelly at the three technique.
“Glenn will be a great three technique player and it wouldn’t make much sense to take him and play him at nose tackle,” Kiffin said.
Kiffin said most of the pre-pick inquiries had to do with teams wanting to go up to get Dorsey, rather than McFadden, but Oakland wasn’t willing to let McFadden slip away.
He did say he wished Dorsey would have slipped even further, with the Chiefs pouncing on the LSU defensive tackle with the next pick.
Regarding McFadden’s supposed character issues _ he has had a couple of nightclub incidents which haven’t amounted to much in the grand scheme _ Kiffin was unconcerned.
“I can’t find even one person who has ever had an issue with him,” Kiffin said.
He said McFadden’s own accounts of his transgressions showed a person who accepted his own responsibility rather than blaming others.
Kiffin said any deals which could give the Raiders additional picks would happen if a player came on the board who was of prime interest, and that no deals would be struck simply to acquire extra picks.
A more complete account of Kiffin’s assessment will come later . . .

1st?
April 26th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
it’s his job to say that, i don’t care if it’s true, we got the #1 player in the draft
April 26th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
kiffin is renigging on his earlier comments
April 26th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Kiffin’s choice all along, not just Al’s Boo ya
April 26th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Update from the draft.
The jets fans went nuts when we took D- mac.We couldnt lose with Dorsey either.
I have been to the draft 7 times and it gets better and wilder every year Back to the Draft later…..
April 26th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I still would have preferred Ellis/Clady/C. Long, but this WILL improve the offense, just not as much as Ellis or Long would have improved the defense. For the sake of Raider Nation, I hope Al & Kiff know what they’re doing.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Bush and McFadden = Thunder and Lightning!!!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Amy Trask’s husband is out in his shop as we speak, welding together a chastity belt for his wife. Oakland, hide your daughters! McDadden is coming to town!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Kiffin is building his USC offense with the Raiders.
DMac becomes his Reggie, Russell his Leinart, Bush his White, and Curry/Carter/Walker his Williams.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Bush and McFadden = Pillage and Plunder
April 26th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
McFadden and Bush….Your missing the other two “cogs” to make this the youngest most potential fourthsome in the AFC West…possibly the NFL.
Jamarcus, Bush, DMac and Miller.
Get ready to get introduced to the Fearsome Four Donks, Dischargers and Queefs!!!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
good pick for buffalo
let’s hope denver doesn’t take clady
April 26th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
cheers for that Tommy, just read somewhere that Raiders may get let DMAC return kicks. As you say too important to do so
April 26th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
ehhhh…….we dont need him! stupid move! should have traded it for a later 1st round pic and a second round pic…..stupid!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Broncos gotta be taking Clady
April 26th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Seriously - Kiffin loves it because he’s going to be able to display the same creativity he had at USC with Thunder (White) and Lightning (Bush). Now it’s Bush (Thunder) and McFadden (Lightning).
April 26th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
So What Do we Now Do About The O-Line?
April 26th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
well thats the AFC East, all on the board already
April 26th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
hey ray, your dumb
April 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
oh snap broncs got clady
April 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
hey k-rock, you saying mcfadden is a bust already?
April 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
CT,
We didn’t need him? What, TDs don’t help win in the NFL? Was our offense dominant last year? We had 8 rushing TDs last year for god’s sake. 10 RBs had more than 8 TDs by themselves last year and almost all of their teams made the playoffs.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Now I just hope there’s a run on LT’s before KC picks 17th.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
because that would not be smart
April 26th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
the media will say that this was an al davis pick and that kiffin had no say. but to me this feels like a kiffin pick, and i think DMC will fit in kif’s system well. congrats to all the mcfadden people you got your pick. i just hope he is as good as TT thinks he is.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Kiffen is a yes man. Al is a senile has been. what about a defense that ranked damn near last in the league against the run and made even 2nd string RB’s look like gold? And I won’t even begin to talk about the O line
April 26th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
anybody hear anything about trade rumors yet?
April 26th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Barns…
Just making a joke.
McFadden better not be a bust. Too much on the line.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
what is going on! Dakota is probably out rioting like the Raiders just its 1980!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
I’m not mad at the pick, I’m just surprised of the pick. I thought for sure we would take Dorsey. I sure hope Kelly and Sands can get it together and stop the run this year. Lamont Jordan has always been good as gone, but I don’t see how Bush is going to get carries with Fargas and McFadden taking all the carries. I’m not even going to mention Rhodes. But now matter how you look at it, McFadden is still a sexy pick.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
There are two possibiltiies: either Kiffin means what he says or he wants the defense to hang itself.
Kiffin was always honest with his comments last year and if he couldn’t make an honest comment he didn’t say anything so I’m going to pick the first-I’m an optimist.
In any event McFadden could have the same effect on the NFL as Peterson last year and he’s going to take a lot of pressure off Russell. Well when all is said and done-we just got an impact player.
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
welcome mcfadden, we should be number one in rushing this season. lets hope the players we have now can help stop the run. I am not worried about dorsey, gallery-wade-carlisle will chop dorsey leg till it falls off. not only that but denver will help with the chopping aswell.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
it makes perfect scense…..of course we’re not going to tell everyone that we want Mcfabulous and take the risk of someone else moving up to get him…..we just say “RB doesn’t make much scense” ……..it all rides on Russell, and a QB’s best friend is a dangerous/steady/effective run game, Bush&McFadden=great combo for next 6-8 years!!!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
I hope Dukes is correct about Clady not being a good LT. If they toss him on the Right, Clady = toast.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
DMAC - obviously an AD pick. Not my favorite but I’ll support him. Hopefully he learns how to run through a tackle. The film I’ve seen on him shows him going down with minimal arm tackles. Mayock says he has dead legs - no lower body strength. All we can do is hope. I’m kinda bummed over this pick.
Now, let’s see some trades for Washington, Rhodes, Joe & possibly Walter. WE NEED MORE PICKS TO FIX WHAT AILS US!
We still need a LOT, DT, DE, LB, WR
April 26th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Mayock is on FIRE.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
good pick for carolina
April 26th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Say what? Stewart? HAHAHAHAHAHA
April 26th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Stewart, the 2nd RB taken, Bears should be taking Mendenhall
April 26th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Stewart may have 200 yards against us this year???? Shite.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Prediction Tiiime! Washington and Fargas traded for 2nd and 3rd rnd picks. And Lamont Jordan is at home biting on a towel. DMAC jersey #20. YA KNOW?!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
JStew is my second rated RB…I’ve followed him and he is the real deal.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Baltimore is at 26…..Walter to Baltimore for # 26!
Toss in ANYONE else they want the isn’t JR, Miller, or DMC, then the DMC pick would be less of a bad pick in my eyes. IF he stays a Raider (and out of trouble) then WELCOME ABOARD. The Nation is proud to have you. Screw up and will gut you……
April 26th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
“there wasn’t much thought given to selecting defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey because the club has already committed to Tommy Kelly at the three technique.”
Dakota -
Killa #99 can kiss mt a$$. Good call bro.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
i had stewart on the outside of my top 10, if carolina can improve their OL or perfect their hybrid blocking scheme then he will be a beast for them
April 26th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
shut the
April 26th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Kiffin’ speaking a little more plainly these days. I like it. He’s right, there’s no use drafting Dorsey to play the nose. I guess they really do like Tommy. Sapps out of the way.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
i think if we are going to trade a running back we should trade fargas, because of the health issues and rhoades took a pay cut to stay. fargas probably even has higher trade value even though i don’t necessarily think he is the better player
April 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Lets face it.
I’m no proponent of Darren Mcfadden.
He’s the Raiders pick.
We’ll get a chance soon enough to see what he’s about when it comes time to work his contract.
Hopefully things go much smoother than last year.
Mcfadden’s speed and versatility combined with last years successful adoption of the Zone Blocking System should be explosive.
Working against McFadden is the Wild Hog offensive scheme he ran in college, but, running is running and its one of the easier skill positions according to some.
His off field issues have been documented this season, but I’m not entirely sure every one is aware of the drug use, his brothers gang affiliations and paternity cases that have plagued the former Razorback.
McFadden’s off field exploits could be magnified by money. The unsavory characters from their past could resurface with the massive influx of sudden cash, or they could simply get caught up in another destructive life style.
Being rich opens doors and provides more opportunity for serious trouble.
Lets hope Mcfadden’s family doesn’t become a major distraction.
If 4- 5 years from now Mcfadden and co. have remained out of trouble and has been a consistent contributor, I’ll eat my words gladly. But, like Diddy say, “Mo’ money mo’ problems.”
The truth is, Darren McFadden could be a Raider super weapon for years to come, he could soar and self destruct, or he could blow up on the launch pad.
Al loves to gamble.
Sometimes living with a gambler can be very stressful.
Mcfad VS. Dorsey
Potentially, for years to come two warriors will be linked by more than just back to back picks, or for being Divisional foes, but for facing each other on opposite sides of the ball.
Former Arkansas RB and newly selected Darren McFadden will face off against LSU’s DT Glen Dorsey.
Taken 4th overall, Mcfadden came as a surprise for some in the Raider Nation who felt Oakland would be lucky to get a shot at Dorsey, considered the best Defensive Tackle prospect in 20 years.
Despite residing in the cellar in run defense the last 5 years, Oakland opted for offense to augment last years number one overall, QB Jamarcus “Voo Doo” Russell.
In fact, Jamarcus may be part of the reason for Mcfadden’s selection. Taking the heat off of the inexperienced Russell may have become a priority, even with the 6th overall rushing offense last year.
Russell simply may not be ready to champion games even with a successful rushing attack.
Their little disputing McFadden’s break away ability and with Russell’s cannon like arm, Oakland could become a high powered scoring machine.
Trying to stop them will be the Kansas City Chiefs 5th overall selection Glen Dorsey. Dorsey is considered by some as the best overall football player in the Draft, he has great burst and is great against the run. Squaring off against Mcfadden twice a year could dynamically exemplify whether at 4th overall, the Raiders made the right, or the wrong pick by choosing offense over defense or dynamic’s over character, unstoppable force over immovable object.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
We need to get a new name for our new starting backfield. thunder and lightining remings me too much of the dischargers.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
wow, i just mooned my TV right now when they sholled bill belicick on the pat’s team cam……oh well, F*** The Patriots, F*** Mayonaise, and F*** Moss sh!t, RAIDERS4LIFE B!tch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
April 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
NO ONE WILL HAVE MORE THEN 110 YARDS RUSHING AGINST US THIS YEAR OR RYAN IS T. O. A. S. T!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
RunDMC will allow us to see just how creative Kiffin can be…
he’ll line up in a split back field, he’ll motion to the slot, he’ll take snaps, he’ll line up far wide and go deep.
He’ll be a nightmare for opponent’s to game plan against and (sadly for Fargas fans) he’ll take Fargas’s job (unless Bush shows nothing, in which case Fargas will spell DMC).
No chance he’ll be a bust in our ZBS (unless he gets injured). Its all a question of just how good he can be…
April 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
thanks dogg
April 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
thanks dogg
April 26th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
DMAC Only as good as his line…………….
April 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Yeah I live in Oregon, Jonathan Stewart is amazing, just had too many injuries.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Raider TW, hey you can start working on getting me my Authentic. Size is XXXL, black, McFadden.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Raiders need to get back in and draft Red Bryant. There are a few DT’s that could help, but Bryant specifically against the run no idea where he’ll go. Probably tomorrow, but 3rd? 4th?
April 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
The SEC is the strongest conference in football. I watch a ton of SEC games and the defenses are fast McFadden is the real deal
April 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

April 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

April 26th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Mc Bush
April 26th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
There are no Kiffin picks. Al Davis makes the picks, period. Al Davis *is* the Raiders. If you don’t believe it, just ask him.
What we now have is the prospect of an offense that can’t be stopped running and a defense that can’t stop the run. Raiders games this season could be very fast.
G.
“Pillaging just for fun”
April 26th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
McFadden is certainly a game breaker and hard to pass up, but the fact that we didn’t do much but bring back the same @ defensive line and lost Sapp is scary. Maybe this will help us score more points but we may need to score a bunch to win if we still can’t stop the run. Now I think we need to get rid of a RB or two. How is Fargas feeling now? Rhodes has to be traded. We have quite a few players to trade to acquire more picks.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
As my mother used to say: “Well, I’ll be damned!” I never thought that the Raiders would go running back. You definitely have a team now that doesn’t have balance. What now? Deal a RB or CB for draft choices? Who knows? They really need a pass rusher. I just don’t know why they did what they did.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
good pick for the bears
April 26th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
there go all of the big dog OL
shit
April 26th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
I’m surprised at the pick with Fargas just signing and we’re loaded in the backfield as is. I know that Jordan is busy on finding a moving truck to pack up with…but this is a bit a of a shock.
I was hoping Long would’ve fallen…if not there, Dorsey or even Ellis. I don’t think T Kelly is the “one” to stop the run.
O for show…D wins SBowls…
April 26th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Also to all of you that Slamed Tommy Trojan what the F do you have to say now. I know Tommy is to big a guy to gloat but you gus gave him a lot of heat.
TT = Guy that knows his S#!t PERIOD
April 26th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Right on RAW!!!
F the cheatin’ b*stards!
Easiest schedule, delayed Spygate to till after the Draft.
Yuck!
I wonder if Brady has a worse year in 08′ because they won’t be feeding him the defense before the play.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Chris Williams NOT going to Kansas Shitty is a very good thing.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
D MacNasty will open up our offense so much, we’ll address our needs on the o-line later in the draft with the ZBS gems.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
To be honest i think they did make a run at C Long at #2, when they couldn’t make it work DMC was it.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
GOOOOOOOO RAIDERS—-GREAT PICK WITH DMAC
April 26th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Decent DT’s in this draft. Laws had 112 tackles despite being “undersized” at 300 lbs.
Red Bryant is the shizz nite against the run. Marcus harrison and others.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
kiffin has learned raider speak
April 26th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
heh. the raiders drafted a player in the position that we are the deepest. forget all about our TERRIBLE offensive and DEFENSIVE lines. Without a foundation, we have nothing as a team. al davis sucks.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Priest some times teams are NOT gonna trade. They’re just not. It happened last year with us. No one came asking for the overall #1 because we were taking Russell no mattter what. Same thing with the Lambs and Chris Long. Long is going to in the Pro Bowl pretty damn fast. Good for them. + now we can all have fun watching Chris Long smash phony whiners!!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:40 pm

April 26th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Good call KoolKell. I hope that you are right.

He has not choice. He is the Franchise. Not a soul to back him up or push him. (unfortunately)

The Crappy City Cheats had to move up. Olinemen were flying off the board. Good for Carl Peterson to use two first rounders on building their lines. I don’t know about Albert tho. He’s a good player but so h

April 26th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
KC is having the best draft so far. Easy.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
So far KC has had a dynamic draft, that was two fantastic steals.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
All right barring any trades here is my tentative predictions
4th round- Mario Manningham-WR
6th round-Thaddeus Coleman-OT
7th round-Brian Johnston-DE
7th round-Eric Foster-DE/DT
UDFA-Bobby Tatum, Jameel McClain
April 26th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
the chiefs got two of the highest rated players at their positions of need, if those two players didn’t also have the highest bust potential of any player at those positions then i might be worried, on paper it looks like they’ve done great, in reality……….
April 26th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
We need a gem later in the draft that blows the roof off. Comes in pissed that he was drafted so late and just explodes.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Branden Albert might turn out to be the best Olineman in this draft.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
I sure hope that Kiffin is the one saying that McFadden was his choice all along….this pick REEKS of Davis. I just hope that somehow, we can get back into the 2nd or 3rd round, because we still need help on D against the run….being able to score more does’nt mean anything if your defense lets the other team score at will. I’m tired of seeing 3rd string, no name RB’s look like Pro Bowlers against our D!!!!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Mykle Van Hausen: Al is a gambler and gamblers can be hard to hard to live with-you hit that right.
Over the years Al’s gambling has been sensational entertainment but he never seems to get along with folks. I love you anyway Al. Just give us a high powered scoring machine.
Long ball forever! Screw west coast!
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Yeah, the Chiefs are 2 for 2 with those picks.
I think they gave up a lot to move up two spots, but two SOLID linemen on both sides of the ball.
Still would rather have McFadden, in hindsight. Would’ve loved to have Dorsey, but the “YES” I yelled out when we drafted McFadden tells me where my heart was.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Kiffin is pumped right now. His offense will get the job done, and the only thing that can hold us back now is Rob f-ing Ryan.
Do your job Ryan, take all these high-priced, and highly drafted defensive players and do something with them, or else.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
cooks are gettign to many good picks
April 26th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
With Chris Long off the table, I would really have been happy with any of the top prospects. McFadden has the potential to be a versatile, dangerous weapon, and I do agree that we haven’t had many ways to be dangerous on offense lately. Our running game was good, but the number of yards we obtained was very much due to the fact that our passing game was so bad that our only viable option was to just pound the ball upfield on the ground.
My concern is that Michael Bush, who has worked hard, has the character, and who also has the potential to be great, will not get his shot to carry the ball. But he and McFadden are very different types of runners so they may not be taking too many carries away from each other. In fact, as a 1-2 punch I think they compliment each other very well. Fargas can start at first, and Bush can be eased in, while still using McFadden in other ways. Darren is not an every-down type of back.
Kiffin also coached a similar player in Reggie Bush in college, and found very effective ways to use him. I have confidence that he can do the same thing with McFadden.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Bush will pillage!
McFadden will plunder!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Bart, do you really think MM will last that long……ease up on the kool aid.

April 26th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Next picks:
WR or D-Line — depending on who is where, and what we can trade for the pick…
Third priority now should be O-Line…
April 26th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
looks like we are gonna have trouble stopping the run against denver and kc for a few more years, clady and albert are both quality linemen.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Don’t worry about the Chiefs as long as Herm is their coach they will suck.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Mario got a 6 on the wonderlic, I heard he is plunging in this draft, Al might be the only owner crazy enough to take him

Why trade for D-line help now? We let the best D-line players get away.

KC just made the best move of the day….when will people learn…u have to have a great O line to jump to the next level…we blew it we are going to pay this kid to much….o well such is the life of a raider fan

April 26th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
So do you guys not think Joseph at DT (a 1st rounf pick in 2003)and Kalimba Edwards DE are as good as anyone we would get in the 3rd or 4th round?
Why trade for D-line help now? We let the best D-line players get away.
_____________________________________________________
K-Rock, Red Bryant or Okam (DTs) would be great picks if we can get them. They can play the NT position, something Dorsey and Ellis will not do in the NFL. The best fits at DT for us are still on the board.
Make it happen Al, get us Red or Frank.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
stop sweating it on the crappy queefs.
Sure, they got lucky with Dorsey.
But Albert is a huge reach. I’m sorry, you simply do not project collegiate OLGs to OLT in the pros. Not with a first round pick. If Albert was that well-suited to OLT he would have taken over there from D’Brickashaw Ferguson this year.
Plus, Ferguson’s been really average anyway and he held that spot ahead of Albert.
This is one of those moves that will be bally-hooed but they will fall flat on their faces.

For what is worth…. here´s some media talk:
– Fox´s take:
“CZAR’S FRONT OFFICE TAKE: I guess Michael Bush doesn’t look that good in practice. Darren McFadden was always the pick for the Raiders, who said they had enough running backs like Bush, who was injured last year.
But McFadden has a chance to be better than Adrian Peterson, last year’s rookie of the year, because he’s also a super receiver. McFadden also threw for seven touchdowns at Arkansas.
I don’t think there is a question of his character, either. McFadden has 4.3 speed and can run inside and out. This is the kind of player who can help JaMarcus Russell, last year’s No. 1 pick.
The Raiders were talking with the Saints about swapping picks and moving to No. 10 overall, but weren’t that interested in the compensation. It was surprising that the Raiders passed on Glenn Dorsey because defensive tackle is a definite need and apparently head coach Lane Kiffin won a minor battle because he was not high on selecting Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston with this choice.
– CBS Sportsline´s….
“Comment: This was the right pick. The running back situation with the Raiders is not as good as people think. This kid is a home-run hitter. I don’t usually advocate a back this high, but McFadden will be worth it.”

April 26th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
so much for my trade. baltimores loss.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Mcfad and Russell could be epic.
Rob Ryan said last year “We got a good run d. we just give up too many long runs.”
Maybe they feel they’ve addressed that with Gibril, the leading tackler at his postion, Safety.
lets hope so!
April 26th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Someone said earlier that our D is essentially the same as last year. I very much disagree.
1. Kelly moved to UT to take over for Sapp. This is his most natural position, and I think he will be better at it than Sapp.
2. To replace Kelly at DE we got Kalimba Edwards, who is a pretty good pass rusher.
3. To stop the runs that make it into the backfield we got Gibril Wilson at SS, who is an excellent tackler.
I also fully believe that Sands will bounce back at NT this season. He played well in ‘06 and last season he lost his mother and didn’t handle it well. If Sands bounces back, it will totally transform our Run D.

Steve, you are absolutely correct. KC just did what Cleveland did last year. I can’t believe they are doing so well with these picks. These picks will torment us for a long time. Albert is a stud and so is Dorsey. We could have used both of them.
April 26th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
I love the player but we didn’t have the need there. Many issues could have been addressed if Al would have done the smart thing and traded out of this spot.
April 26th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Alameda, Calif. 4:31 p.m.
With Darren McFadden in pocket, Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin just addressed the media for the first and perhaps last time today. Among the best nuggets:
• Yes, defense was the biggest need, but “this was the guy we had to have.” There was never a discussion of trading the pick. Kiffin and his staff considered it somewhat of a long shot that McFadden would even fall to No. 4, and actually discussed trading up to get him. If you believe that’s not Al Davis talking, I’ve got an earthquake-proof bridge to sell you.
• There was little interest from other teams in grabbing the Raiders’ pick — more were interested in snapping up Glenn Dorsey, whom few expected to fall to the Chiefs at No. 5. Cue the shoulda-wouldas in Raider Nation.
• McFadden will likely be the opening-day starter, perhaps even in a split backfield with the recently re-signed Justin Fargas. Kiffin also loves his new toy as a receiving tailback, and will often even line him up out wide.
• The oft-publicized character issues? Not an issue (especially on this team, which has become a haven for guys with so-called “character issues” that make McFadden look like a choir boy). “I can’t find one person who will tell me they’ve ever had an issue with him, in the weight room, in practice,” Kiffin said. “He’s passionate about football.”
• And finally, the Raiders may not be done on Day 1 after all. Kiffin said the team may deal for more picks depending on how the board shakes down. “There are a couple of players where we’ll have to look at giving something up for next year.” And there are plenty of holes to fill: defensive line, receiving corps, another cornerback … the list goes on.
• Best joke I’ve heard all day at Raiders HQ: Oakland’s premier offensive players are now McFumbles and JaMumbles. –Jonah Freedman

April 26th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Kiff wants Baker, Jackson, and a WR like Kelly may fall to us later in the draft because of his “speed” problems. Baker and Jackson were both recruited by Kiff. Give it up for the USC Connection.

“In 125 running plays directed at him, opponents managed to gain just 89 yards (0.71 yards per carry) … Immovable object at the point of attack and is quick to hunker down and fill the rush lanes … Has the short-area burst to close in a hurry and comes out of his stance with his hands ready to lock on, control and shed his blockers … Quick to stack at the point of attack and uses his low center of gravity and strength to gain leverage and hold his ground firmly … Best when playing over the center’s head or giving a good arm-over action to gain advantage over the outside shoulder of the guards in attempts to apply pressure … Tough to defend in the short area when moving down the line and is very conscious of low blocks and how to avoid them … Knows how to time his leaps to get his fair share of pass deflections at the line of scrimmage … Alert for angle blocks and traps, using his hands effectively to counter.”

That is my concern as well. Fargas earned his starting position, and he isn’t nearly as injury prone as people think; he has only missed like 4 games in the past 3 seasons. Also, Michael Bush is a phenomenal prospect who has great character, size, and speed.
McFadden is not an every-down type of back though. My hope is that we use McFadden as a diversion and a versatile weapon, give him maybe 15 runs/catches a game in plays that will give him the ability to use his superior speed. Fargas can still start at RB, and Bush can slowly take over by sharing carries with Justin or by being the 3rd down RB.
April 26th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
RUN DMC in the nation!
April 26th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
What’s Bush thinking right now? This will screw the character of the backfield.
April 26th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
No it won’t.
Having Fargas allows you to bring in RunDmc and Bush slowly (Dmac comming of sholder surgery and Bush comming off of a LONG vacation). The main issue with Dmac right away will be the playbook (blocking schemes more than anything). Bush on the otherhand should have that stuff down pat
Dmac is not going to be a full time back, but he’s probably not going to be running the wild hog either (who knows). But he is going to be splitting out and moving around and gettup up the defenses @ss.
PLUS, he’s likely to be returning punts or kickoffs.
April 26th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
McFadden will be used in a Charlie Garner type role. Cathcing passes out of the backfield and lining up in the slot. He’ll probably be one of our leading receivers. Not sure what happens to jordan and rhodes now. probably cut late in camp. Our offensive line is still one of the weakest in the league at pass blocking and our defense is a sieve but at least we might be more exciting on O.
April 26th, 2008 at 2:50 pm

this pick sucks so F*&^*& bad its not even funny, sorry to be a party pooper but what are we gonna do with Justin Fargas, Dominuqe Rhodes, Lamone Jordan, Micheal Bush, Adomecha..wana..madoo…you get the picture. we just waisted 12 mill. on Fargas and we need a fresh young WR. I am a die hard RAIDER fan ive been there when we took lechler in the first round, but man this is becoming to much, Freaken a im gonna kill my self AAAAAHHHHHH….
April 26th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
McFadden should be good to go with the playbook by fall. He had a 3.2 gpa last year, so he’s not a complete dummy. Package Rhodes and Washington to Saints or ATL for 2 or 3 round pick. Where’s the C.Long fans???????
April 26th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
MY brothers we finally have gotten a player that will rival marcus, this guy is the real deal. The rest of the backs we have can’t compare.Just win will know come true.
April 26th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Raiders knew all along who they were picking….Love those smoke screens!
April 26th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
DMAC is an excellent choice for multiple reasons.
It has been obvious that the pick would not be Dorsey due to the amount of money that is allocated already at the DT position. DT’s Kelley, Turd, Warren have a fair amount of money on them with William Josepth looking to prove himself and adding depth. Josh Shaw is there as well.
Who would have thought 2 years ago that we would have both JaMarcus Russell, Michael Bush and Darren McFadden on our offense for years to come? MERRY XMAS FOR ME…and i hope most of you fellow Nationites!

ATL or Saints need CB’s…Dallas still may need it if Pacman doesnt get reinstated or is suspended (security). Kiffin said we can still p/u someone after 06/01 to help with DL/OL/LB or we can trade 09 for 08.
It’s sure nice to have a RB on the caliber of our rivals (LT, LJ, and whomever Den puts in).

The email sent from the Raiders announcing McFadden as the pick was email #37 in my inbox.
If McFadden serves the team as well as a certain #37 did so long ago, this pick will be great.

April 26th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
The Raiders were smart in the way they played it. They now have had the two #1 picks based on talent in the last two drafts. Great pick that will really help J Russell out next year.
April 26th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Great pick getting Mcfadden. He will help balance our offense for many years along with Russell. Now expect the Raiders to get back into the draft in the 2nd & 3rd rounds. I still believe Fabian Washington will be traded for a 3rd. I believe we are in the making of getting into the 2nd round to select either WR Desean Jackson or Limas Sweed. Watch Al work his magic.
April 26th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Oh the 3rd round selection will be S Tom Zbowski.
April 26th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
If we went with Dorsey, DMAC would have fallen to KC,… then all you armchair QB’s would be complaining for the next 5 years how lame we were passing on DMAC watching him gut us (Dorsey) for 200+ twice a season.
Run DMC was a great pick that will help the O get going in so many ways. Dorsey was a monster in college, but DMC got the best of him every time they met and I think that is what tipped the Raiders hat, IMHO.
April 26th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
After reading Kiffin’s response I feel better about the pick. If he can catch out of the backfield and line up as a WR then the offense will be unreal this year. I wanted Dorsey badly but now I am kinda stoked! We still need lineman badly. My god we need to get Mario Manningham on this offense and we are in the playoffs this year!
April 26th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Kiffin helped fool almost every NFL GM, making Reggie Bush look incredible when he was at USC.
Just wait to see what Kiff does with the better talent (and speed) in McFadden.
April 26th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
They say Manningham won’t get drafted. We could use our last pick in the 7th on him, but he only scored a 6 on the WL test.
April 26th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
McFaddden!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!
There is a God!
April 26th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Manningham has visited so I know there is interest. I watched him shred defenses at Michigan. He is a big play threat and can make big catches. I don’t care what his Wonderlic was or his combine times. I don’t care he smoked a little. His gameplay says it all.

With Bush and McFadden, what’ll happen to Fargas and Rhodes and Jordan?
—-
Jordan will be let go pretty much for sure.
Rhodes will be a backup, perhaps traded.
Fargas will likely be starter still.
McFadden is not a 30-carry back and isn’t gonna be used like a straight up RB all the time anyway. Bush is probably gonna be a little rusty. Fargas is a good back and a known quantity until we get the new kids up to speed. I expect Bush will split carries with him this year, and if he is as good as I think he is, he will take over next year.
April 26th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Hopefully, Michael Bush is ready to step up. If he is, then Bush and Fargas will duke it out for the carries this offense requires of physical backs. IMO, they’re going to be largely inter-changeable pieces.
McFadden’s a different kind of runner, and his style can’t be compared to anyone else’s — he’s just a weapon.
Rhodes is versatile and relatively cheap, he shoudln’t be going anywhere.
I wouldn’t be surprised if no team bids on Jordan — his reliability and durability are in question, and the rest of the league know we don’t need him. Especially at those prices.
April 26th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
After thinking about this pick, I realize that I had lower expectations than the Raiders. They were smart enough to see that a Reggie Bush-Peterson combination like McFadden who can run harder than either of those guys is just what the offense needs. I needed to think bigger. If the free agent receivers hold up, then the Raiders could really have an explosive offense. They could score like Rams of a few years ago. You see all sorts of possible offensive sets Kiffin can use. They can run so many backs at you; the tight ends are good, and the wide receivers have a chance to be really good. The offensive line will be adequate and the defense is solid enough, hopefully, to make this a definite playoff team. I didn’t like the pick at first, but now I really think it’s the best thing the Raiders could have done in this draft.
April 26th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Its about time AL let someone else do the first pick.. We should of had AP last year and jacked that up!!! Im tired of seeing below average running backs in the silver and black, its time to have a run over 9 yards for the first time in ten years.. BRING ON THE BRONCOS BABY!!!!
April 26th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Ha, don’t you morons get it? Do ya. I have told people for months now that Al and Kiffin had a plan back in February 2007: Get the best Qb/Rb/Wr in 2007 then get the best Qb/Rb/Wr in 2008 mixed with free agency and unleash on the NFL. LOL at you morons who have the nerve to say DMAC isn’t an every down back. Farglass is? DMAC was the only pick to get people and it was determined a long time ago…………trust me.

I hope Turd Sands is being put through an intensive conditioning program this off season. He has a load of potential but he appears to an exhausted slug after a few plays. If he plays up to his God given ability, our run stopping will improve accordingly.

The Raiders are a bunch of losers, what old man picks a running back when he knows he already has 20 of them!? These bunch of retards ruined the draft, give me a f*cking break man, this pick is comparable to the pats trading up to draft a qb, its retarded and makes 0 sense, now mcfadden is nothing special because he is on a worthless team with offensive linemen worse then then hoover high school, thanks for wasting yet again perfect talent. I feel really bad for Deangelo Hall, but its ok he too will leave in a year or two and actually be good again just like every other player who goes to the Raiders

The $16 million, $17 million or $18 million (depending on the contract) question that nobody could answer truthfully Thursday at the annual NFL draft luncheon: Which one of you top prospects wants to be a Raider?
Sadly for the once-proud Oakland Raiders, the answer is none of the five yet-to-be signed players in attendance (newly minted Dolphins offensive tackle Jake Long is the exception) at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers really wants to join the franchise.
Or as one agent put: “Sure, somebody is going to want to go fourth overall because of the money, but they’re not going to like the prospects once they get there.”
There is no greater indictment of a team than the stricken look that comes upon a player’s face when he realizes he must go to the Raiders, the NFL’s wasteland. Sure, plenty of players, such as safety Gibril Wilson, cornerback DeAngelo Hall, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly and running back Justin Fargas, lined up to take the money. That’s why when the Raiders pick at No. 4 overall on Saturday, some player will manage a smile for the cameras. And if he smiles, he should get an Oscar with his Raiders jersey.
Draftees are probably thinking through scenarios where they can avoid becoming Raiders. Take running back Darren McFadden, who has drawn a lot of interest from the Raiders and the New York Jets, who pick No. 6 overall. The thinking in that camp is if LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey goes No. 2 overall to St. Louis, Atlanta at No. 3 might trade with the Jets at No. 6, giving New York a clear path to him.
Over where Ohio State defensive tackle Vernon Gholston was sitting, his camp was hoping that either he or Virginia defensive end Chris Long would go No. 2 to the Rams. Then Dorsey would go No. 3, McFadden No. 4 and Gholston would end up at No. 5 (to Kansas City) or at No. 6 to the Jets.
Even Long, the son of Hall of Fame Raiders defensive lineman Howie Long, really has no desire to follow in his father’s footsteps. Part of that is the automatic pressure that goes with being a Raider Legacy (boy, is that an odd term these days), but much of it is because even his father knows that the Raiders just aren’t run well anymore.
Or as one person close to Chris Long said mockingly in recent days: “There’s no way you can tell what the Raiders are going to do because not even (owner) Al (Davis) knows what he’s doing.”
Ouch.
About the only player unconcerned with the fate of being No. 4 is Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan. He was asked to give a mock draft for the top six picks. When he got to No. 4 he said with comfort, “You know they’re not taking me,” an obvious reference to the fact that Oakland took quarterback JaMarcus Russell at No. 1 overall last year.
Ryan has the most uncertain Saturday of the lot. There’s talk that he could end up with Atlanta, Kansas City or Baltimore at No. 8. When asked how he’d feel if he took an Aaron Rodgers- or Brady Quinn-type fall in the draft, Ryan took the moment in stride, giving a very professional response.
“Five years ago, if you told me I’ll be a first-round pick, I’d take it and be happy. If you told me a year ago I’ll be a first-round pick, I’ll take it. Anywhere in the first round would be great,” he said. “Hopefully, I’m not sitting too long, but I’ll be excited with whoever takes me. It’s going to be exciting, no question.”
Whoever goes No. 4 to Oakland, it’s hard to believe they’ll feel the same way.
