Raiders take Richmond WR
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, April 27th, 2008 at 10:09 am in Oakland Raiders.
Arman Shields, a wide receiver who missed 10 games with an ACL tear for Richmond last season, was selected in the fourth round with the 125th pick overall by the Raiders.
Shields becomes the player acquired in exchange for cornerback Fabian Washington, who was traded to Baltimore for the selection.
Shields, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, had 12 catches for 107 yards in the season opener against Vanderbilt and sustained the knee injury. He returned later in the season to make one catch, but then left and did not return. He ran a sub 4.4 40-yard dash time at the scouting combine.
There will be plenty of opportunity for Shields to compare medical notes with his teammates. He joins a receiving corps that includes Javon Walker (three ACL tears), Drew Carter (three ACL tears) and Ronald Curry (three Achilles tears).

April 27th, 2008 at 10:10 am
wow two in a a ROW!.. ill retire now
April 27th, 2008 at 10:10 am
WR
Class:
Sr
School:
Richmond
Conference:
Colonial Athletic
Ht., Wt.:
6-0.5, 194
40 Time:
4.47
BIOGRAPHY: Four-year starter who was sidelined after three games last season with a knee injury. Posted 14 receptions as a senior after 54/643/5 the previous year.
POSITIVES: Reliable receiver who.s best suited for a timing offense. Plays with excellent body control, possesses soft hands, and fights hard to make the reception. Comes away with the difficult catch in a crowd, gives effort blocking, and gets vertical to out-jump opponents for the ball.
NEGATIVES: More of a possession wide out and does not play to his timed speed. Loping runner who does not show sharpness running routes. Marginally effective running after the reception.
ANALYSIS: Shields had been a productive and consistent receiver prior to his injury last season. He could find a home as a fourth wideout at the next level if he returns to full strength.
PROJECTION: Early Fourth Round
April 27th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Lavelle Hawkins going right after him will come back to haunt us.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:11 am
I like the pick, perhaps he can develop.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:11 am
TT cmon i like the optimism but this draft could turn out to be a complete waste
April 27th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Man, I just don’t see the logic in drafting injured players.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:12 am
So with a few strokes of bad luck, our starting receivers could be Higgins and this guy. I am really pissed they passed on Hawkins, he is ready to play at the next level, and this guy is a huge question mark before you factor in the knee issue.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:12 am
whats with all the atraction to damaged goods
April 27th, 2008 at 10:12 am
sick we traded fabe
April 27th, 2008 at 10:12 am
JLH better show womething from day one otherwise its waste of a 3rd round pick, I think he is on probations so to speak
April 27th, 2008 at 10:12 am
Well, at least McFadden should make the team…not sure on the rest of these guys, lol.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am
I don’t mind the pick, it just seems like there are plenty of WR’s available. Supply is still high on WR’s, can’t say the same about LB’s, DT’s, and OL.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am
‘There will be plenty of opportunity for Shields to compare medical notes with his teammates. He joins a receiving corps that includes Javon Walker (three ACL tears), Drew Carter (three ACL tears) and Ronald Curry (three Achilles tears).”
Hey, Jerry, your wit is never wasted on me. LOL.
And Big Al strikes again with another bizarre pick.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am
OMG! I just saw the Raiders drafted a CB.
Freakin Davis just can’t help himself can he.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am
Someone needs to tear Davis a new one…then, he can compare notes with all of his injured track stars…
April 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am
Going into the draft, I saw DL, OL, OLB, and WR/KR as our greatest needs. Shows what I know.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:14 am
That’s the best we could do after giving away a 1st round choice for a 4th rounder is an injured WR? What is going on? How bout a guard? How bout a DT? What’s going on?!!!!
April 27th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Lavell Fukin Hawkins why didnt we take this guy?
Someone is asleep at the switch
April 27th, 2008 at 10:15 am
You guys need to remind yourselves that Al is a frigging genius. He is way smarter then any of us chumps. Men like him dont come along very often.
Notice how most teams are looking to beef up, run hard, control the line and stop the run.
Al and Kiff are gonna speed things back up and we will see if you keep running the dam ball when we are capable of running up the score in a moments notice with speed.
Remember we are only in year two of the Kiff project so show just a little patience. Kiff loves speed almost as much as Al. This is his (and Al’s) second draft. We all thought he did pretty dam good last year and he is showing wisdom in this one as well. (Hall for a second and a fifth hehehe)
Al is making a run at another SB. He makes these runs as well as anyone so get on board and wipe that frown away and put on a happy face. Run the ball, run the ball and throw the long bomb.
This will be one hell of a exciting run.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Dakota: I don’t think it is a joke. The DB will probably make the team with Fabe being traded, but it may only be McFadden who makes the cut.

So with a few strokes of bad luck,…
Sadly I think this maybe the case. I would not be surprised to seeing d-mac and miller getting more receptions than our WR group a few times next year
April 27th, 2008 at 10:16 am
LAVELLE HAWKINS 2nd in the pac-10 in recieving WTF
April 27th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Kevn, I think you know plenty. It doesn’t take a genius to know what we need. And after this draft, we will still need them.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Here’s a look at some of our other WRs:
Drew Carter - knee injury
Ronald Curry - Achilles tendon injury
Javon Walker - knee injury
Looks like we made the right pick. Shields fits right into the typical Raiders receiver mold.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:17 am
These are special teams picks and depth folks! We’re in the 4th frickin round, for goodness sakes. There are other areas to upgrade on the team other than Dline.
Do you really want Chris Johnson back as the gunner, or on the team at all? Branch should replace him.
Will Buchanon and Chris McFoy? Hawkins will compete for the #5 WR spot.
Maybe positions some of you like aren’t being upgraded, but the TEAM is!
Good Job Raiders!
April 27th, 2008 at 10:17 am
This guy was a monster at the combine. I think there is hope for him if he is healthy. check his combine performance out. he might be a track and field star though i guess but il give him a chance. im pretty ok with the pick. Im praying he is the next Marques Colston
April 27th, 2008 at 10:17 am
seems strange - even i have to admit as much
April 27th, 2008 at 10:17 am
That is too little value for Fabe. If you want to trade him hold onto him until the preseason when people start getting injured. Not sure about the pick, I have’nt heard of the guy let alone see him play. I wanted Hawkins and somebody else mentioned DJ Hall from Bama who I have seen and would have been a nice target for Jamarcus. I’m not too happy about the drafting today but still estatic over the DMAC pick.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Hey Mom, if Al is such a genius, why have we been so crappy lately? I don’t think this has been a very good draft for us. We had very limited opportunities to make an impact and Al has drafted only what he likes, not what we need.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Lavell Fukin Hawkins why didnt we take this guy?
undersized and gets outrun by defensive ends, not really our type of guy.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:18 am
If your name is Branch or have a medical condition we have a home for you.
Lets just wait till these get on the field and make a judgement. DMAC is going to be a stud and our offense needs some lightning.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Our first two rounds will produce play-makers ( Hall, and McFadden), so I keep telling myself if you get two really good starters in the draft we should be happy..How’s that for glass half full
April 27th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Hey, cheer up!
At least USA TODAY had Branch as a 1st rounder…..I´m joking, of course. But they actually did…
Tyvon Branch, Connecticut, 6-0, 204
• Scouting report: His biggest assets are speed and versatility. A 4:31 40 makes him the fastest corner in the draft. A great kick returner — he ran back two kickoffs for TDs — and can also play safety.
• Insider’s take: “Branch is quick enough to mirror receivers underneath, fast enough to run with receivers downfield and versatile enough to line up at safety in certain situations.” —Todd McShay, Scouts Inc./ESPN
• Projected round: First
April 27th, 2008 at 10:19 am
andrews mom..
Yeah Al has shown how smart he is in the last few drafts…Robert Gallery anyone?
April 27th, 2008 at 10:19 am
maybe four fast tall recievers playing half time each are better than two prima donnas
April 27th, 2008 at 10:19 am
G Dammit I just completely forgot WR - Kennan Burton was available who just went. That dude is sick, we should have picked him. He was a big time performer in the SEC.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:19 am
We passed on hawkins WTF ESPN just featured him wTF are we doing
April 27th, 2008 at 10:20 am

“what a maroon”.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:20 am
4.4 is pretty dam quick within a year of an ACL tear, they say it takes 2 years for that to heal 100%
April 27th, 2008 at 10:20 am
And of course these are AL’s picks!
AL has hit on many more picks than he missed on over the years, but of course some of you just need something to cry about and focus on late round misses.
Must just be your nature. Relax a little.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:21 am
lol @ maroon
:))
April 27th, 2008 at 10:21 am
WR Lavelle Hawkins
Smaller target. Lacks ideal size and strength. Is not physical enough. Will get pushed around by some bigger DB’s in coverage. Goes down too easily after the catch. Speed is good but not elite. Will not be much of a vertical threat in the NFL. Needs to be more effective as a blocker. Gets in the way most of the time but doesn’t work at sustaining and gets pushed around too much in the running game.

April 27th, 2008 at 10:21 am
P{ost 31 not buying that we took JLH last year. Hawkins is a much better reciever than JLH.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:21 am
He also was in the top 10 among WRs at the combine a year removed from ACL surgery.
Not to mention the One game he played before the injury he had 107 yards…not too shabby
April 27th, 2008 at 10:22 am
JHill: Hawkins is better than McFoy and Buchanan and if this guy is not better than those two, than what a waste. I think both those guys were undrafted, there is value in the fourth round, just think Kirk Morrison, and to take a huge unknown is a waste. I hope I am completely wrong……
April 27th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Marley,
I started after the trade with the Cowboys.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:23 am
ohio, it could be a waste or we could have just added LaDanianTomlinson, Devin Hester, and Braylon Edwards……..
April 27th, 2008 at 10:23 am
do i think they;ll all be that good? no but they may………..and McFadden WILL……..
April 27th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Post 44, outside of doing a cut and paste did you ever see hawkins play? nuff said
April 27th, 2008 at 10:24 am
stfu…come on tt
April 27th, 2008 at 10:24 am
I’ll give the dude a chance b/c I have’nt seen him play but who has ? I do like that he can return kicks as can Branch which we need. I just would have went a different way.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:24 am
ok… now i want chris henry. i know he has baggage but the wr core we have sucks like sh. we still have no reliable deep threat. javon knees slow him down. drew carter is no starter. curry never had burners. shields? wud b lucky to make the practice squad. and higgins showed us what he could do last year which is nothin.]-,: i just want someone who can contribute no matter the cost.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Raiding Texas…Lol…
April 27th, 2008 at 10:25 am
I really dont like the Arman Shields pick either but keep in mind that Drew Carter only signed a 1 year deal and if Arman Shields could be our solid # 2 after Drew Carter is gone than it will be a good pick - I also think that JLH will stay and end up being our slot guy - Remember it takes recievers a couple of years to develope so if we were to grab recievers next year after Drew Carter than we would be were we were last year…With no recievers and waiting for them to develope - I hope we get a 5th rounder for Rhodes and pick a RE
April 27th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Thats the way I see it TT.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:25 am
next time is in 6th round, rite?
April 27th, 2008 at 10:26 am
Kirk mo was actually a late 3rd but there is value in the 4th.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:26 am
lol thats classic TT view, comparng guys who are proven pro bowlers to guys who we reach on, this guy from richmond wasnt even supposed to be drafted
April 27th, 2008 at 10:26 am
chris henry??? He is going to be banned soon, but I guess AD might sign him ,lol.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Draft 1st day A+
Draft 2nd day D-
April 27th, 2008 at 10:28 am
I am liking the Branch pick ALOT!
He is ranked just behind Brandon Flowers and know for ferocious hits and fearless attitude not to mention a Speal Teams Demon by the coaching squad in Connecticut.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:29 am
NFL Combine:
Arman Shields

April 27th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Don’t worry. We’ll get a good WR in next year’s draft. I’m sure we’ll have another top ten pick and can get Michael Crabtree.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:30 am
ohio, he was a late 3rd or early 4th round player
April 27th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Branch is a poor mans Laron Landry
April 27th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Wasn’t even supposed to be drafted?????
Why, because you never heard of him?
GTFOH !!!!
April 27th, 2008 at 10:31 am
If nothing else, we will have the fastest team in the NFL
April 27th, 2008 at 10:31 am
TT, you left out one part:
“Has the valid speed to be a deep threat, but has dropped a lot of balls on those routes due to an inability to track the ball in flight (struggles to turn his head and look the ball in over his outside shoulder) … Needs more than a few reps to retain plays and is NOT CAPABLE of digesting a complicated playbook”
April 27th, 2008 at 10:31 am
We needed a returner Branch will be a very solid returner. I guess they feel good about the dline.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:31 am
These picks are fine. Why does everyone have to always bitch so much. Of course these guys could be busts, but I don’t think they are reaches.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:32 am
JHill…
My thoughts too, if they are on ‘experts’ draft board they usually going to be drafted
April 27th, 2008 at 10:32 am
crabtree was is asoph cant come out, but in 2 years he will go 1.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:32 am
no MIA, he’s a poor man’s devin hester
April 27th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Jhill, post 68 im laugh so hard.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:33 am
post 51. yeah. But, but we don’t draft undersized WRs who run 4.6.
I’ll cut and paste some more.
Hawkins is similar to Burleson in that he could be an efficient kickoff returner at the next level and has too much inconsistency in his game as a receiver. Hawkins has valid speed, but seems to shy away from contact, showing disinterest as a blocker. He is not the most urgent runner of pass routes, executing sloppy patterns and a lack of vision to locate the zone’s soft areas. Produced catches as a senior, but the numbers came in spurts and for every solid game Hawkins had, there were several where he disappeared. He has shorter-than-ideal arm length and marginal leaping ability, making him a nonexistent factor in jump-ball situations. Like Burleson, Hawkins’ athletic ability is far ahead of his football skill. While some might be impressed with his potential, he is more of a boom-or-bust player than the “next great thing.”

Other than McFadden, the only other bright spot in this draft is the fact that we didn’t trade away any of next year’s draft picks.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:34 am
those combine numbers for shields, given the injury and time, are INCREDIBLE!!!, he is going to improve those a bit over next three months - maybe this wasnt so strange a pick -
April 27th, 2008 at 10:35 am
So far the grading (IMO only) for this draft is
Darren Mc Fadden 10/10 Honestly, not who I would have picked. I wanted to trade down but he’s our pick and a damn good player.
Tyvon Branch 7/10 Not a bad pick will help the team but I would have picked either a LB or DT.
Arman Shields 3/10 Not a good pick, Al must really trust in ACL surgery
So we have 20/30 points, this is not looking to be a good draft so far.
Kiffin an Al must have alot of faith in Sands this year. I can understand how losing a parent can mess you up for a year or two so I hope Sands is ready to show what he has this year.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Hey are these picks gonna even make camp? I mean everyone knows the Summer Olympics are in China! Maybe this is Als way of taking the NFL global by holding this years camp in China. LMFAO
April 27th, 2008 at 10:35 am
tenesee took keglar, that sucks, but robertson is STILL there
April 27th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Not true, Thec. He redshirted. He is old enough to come out in next season’s draft. He’s already made it clear he intends to do so. Some mock drafts have him going 1st or 2nd:

JLH deer in headlights. Keep up with the cut and paste
your good at it.

Chris Carter calls Arman Shields “GREAT VALUE”
April 27th, 2008 at 10:36 am
the guys on TV like the picks…
April 27th, 2008 at 10:36 am
man it isn’t that there weren’t good players available, in fact there plenty of stars still there. We drafted project who can’t even help us except in special teams
April 27th, 2008 at 10:37 am
TT, right in that Shields raised the level of his game against better competition. Supposedly, he’s healed up pretty good. Bigger faster guy, should be OK at this spot.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Didnt know crabtree rshirted he will be 1 out of the draft. He is a monster WR.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:38 am
they like the picks because WE’RE GETTING GREAT PLAYERS! they’re just not lineman, we don’t need players to “fill need”, we need players to compete to fill needs, none of our needs are glaring, but all could use competition, WR, and KW are off our list of needs……let’s go DE, OT, and DT
April 27th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Thanks TT for post 64. That makes me feel better about the pick.
Still, a HUGE net loss as compensation for F.Wash.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:39 am

April 27th, 2008 at 10:39 am

April 27th, 2008 at 10:39 am
TT,
Chris Carter called white dragon cut with a little baking powder “Great Value” too.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:39 am
WHAT THE HELL IS AL DAVIS THINKING?
1) Trade a former first round pick for a 4th rounder and then go right back out and take another CB who is a project?? WHY not just keep Washington then?
2) Draft a CB instead of Dre Moore? WHY?
3) Pick a WR with a bum knee from a nothing program??
WTF!!!!!!!!!!?????????
Maybe he’s just trying to make the fiasco of the McFadden pick look better?
This is why we SUCK….we manage the draft like idiots!!!!
April 27th, 2008 at 10:39 am
McFadden, KR, and WR…….I think Kiffin and AD want to score points…….
April 27th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Black n’ Silver Knight man I feel what you saying. Keep in mind that our run defense has been the worst for the past 2 years with Sands and Kelly, I don’t see anything changing f— the 3 way technique, Kelly and Sands are way over rated by some fans….
April 27th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Dakota, i have ben talking Takeo Spikes since FA started, last week you said spikes was old. You would take a flyer on him now?
April 27th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Booty to the Vikes. Tavares is DONE!
April 27th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Thec, if we have a good season in 2008 and don’t get a high draft pick, I would trade the entire 2009 draft to get him. If Al loves taking players on measurables alone, why not? He brings it all and then some.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:40 am
no ohio, i’m a poor man’s todd mcshay, kiper is a poor man’s me
April 27th, 2008 at 10:41 am
BSPN seems positive on Shields.. Honestly, it’s the fourth round - finding guys like jared allen and the cb taht went from the pats to the eagles (name escapes me right now) are the exception, not the norm. I agree that we have bigger needs than wr here - esp this one.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:41 am
i was being sarcastic to the fact you act like you know it all but really know nothing
April 27th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Ohio you haven’t said one positve thing. You got a buckeye up your ass or what?
April 27th, 2008 at 10:42 am
We have a hard hitting secondary now. Something we did not have last year and shut down corners.
Al is working on opening up the field so his 60 million dollar swamp monster can air it out.
We are doing great this draft.
Hall = a 24 year old two time pro bowler for a second and next years fifth.
Dont forget we got Gerald warren in the third.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Thec, yeah things change…I didn’t know Al was just going to draft a team to run a relay in Beijing. I really thought defense would be the theme of day two.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:43 am
RTwxas, only problem is becoz of our leveraging we wont have any picks for 2009. We wont be in the top 10 more like the mid 20’s
April 27th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Dont like trey wingo, he allways says the raiders are a mess.

April 27th, 2008 at 10:45 am
what is there to say positive we are still not addressing our biggest needs on the lines and will regret it in the future
April 27th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Andrews Mom…We got Gerrard for our 5th. Our 3rd was for Mario Henderson.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Thec, we been a mess whats he supposed to say ? Shlereth is the one that bashes us hard and Cris Carter too.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:46 am
TT - Robertson hasnt got drafted?
April 27th, 2008 at 10:46 am
err I meant Undrafted FA’s..Damn lazy fingers…
April 27th, 2008 at 10:47 am
For those guys who keep mentioning Warren name, remember he was ok not every down starter, he has problems of staying motivated that is wht the pigs cut him….

what’s this obsession with speed and injured players?
Get somebody who can HIT for a change, or somebody with a BRAIN, who doesn’t make mistakes.

Rex Ryan will teach Fabian how to tackle and he will be a stud with the Ravens.
Rob Ryan did nothing but buy Washington pizza and let him take naps between team meetings.
We have the retarded Ryan.

The Dude, wasn’t that for the Javon Walker trade?
April 27th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Ya Rex was always Buddy’s Favorite

We traded the 5th rd pick to Denver for Warren last year.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:52 am
There went the pick we gave to Denver for G.Warren.
Anybody prefer Frank Okam, DeMario Pressley, or Ahtyba Rubin?
April 27th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Hey Raider Nation
I like the picks thus far. They don’t address ol or dl but they appear to have the “measurables” to be contributors.

What does everyone think of
Johnny Dingle | 6’3” | 270 pounds | West Virginia
Johnny Dingle recorded 79 tackles and 15 quarterback sacks during his college career. In 2007 he made 48 tackles and 9 solo sacks.

why trade an experienced and more than adequate back up CB for a pick and then just take a greener and more unproven CB? Explain that!
April 27th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Wassup Nation! Been watchin quietly and tryin to shake off yesterday’s liquids. I was cool with the CB pick, even though I haven’t heard of this guy before, because he has nice size, the reports say he’s quick and he play safety as well as return kicks/punts. However, that WR just makes me shake my fuqqin heard… and in my current condition, I need to avoid that!
April 27th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Donkeys get Ryan Torain with the Gerard Warren pick. He will be a good zbs runner. And we still have no one to stop the run.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Hagen, Branch is said to have mad st skill, as well as being a hard hitter and sure tackler. Fabian is none of that.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Looks like Al is picking players he can keep up with while walking/rolling/ scooting down the hall. Maybe Al’s got an orthopod on retainer who gave him a coupon for a bulk deal on knees. LOL
April 27th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Oh yeah. I like Arman btw i really do just check his combine stats. hope he is fit but im sure he will be
April 27th, 2008 at 10:55 am
At this point im assuming Al wants the D to just stack 8 and hope Nnamdi and Hall hold it down.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:55 am

that CB pick has back-up safety written all over it. I;m ok with that. Bye Stu…

He’s a maroon
Washington was arrested at his home in Manatee County, Florida, after a responding police officer noticed a red mark on the neck of Washington’s 21-year-old live-in girlfriend.
Washington, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, said the altercation didn’t get physical. The police responded to a 911 call from Washington’s girlfriend. She later told the media that she didn’t want Washington prosecuted for the misdemeanor.
Washington will not be prosecuted on domestic battery charges if he completes a 26-week intervention course for first time offenders. He also must stay out of trouble during that period. [3]

Post #132 good question, here is the reality of your question, $$$$
Fabion is going to earn $8oo,ooo this year and next year $1.5 million.
You don’t pay your fourth DB that type of money, compared to Branch as the fourth round pick $200,000 dollars.

what’s this obsession with speed and injured players?
—————-
obsession with speed is nothing new.
It’s obvious that the Raiders don’t care about injuries anymore. Seems dumb, but I think we might be ahead of the curve. This is football, everybody either has been or will be injured. The surgeries are so advanced now that these guys come back as strong or stronger than before. Still a risk of reinjury, but the risk of a healthy guy is just about as high.
So if you say you’re not going to acquire anybody with a past injury, you’re leaving a lot of talent out there. I think within the next five years this will be the mindset of all teams. Basically everybody either has been seriously injured or will be seriously injured soon.

Speed? i’ve got speed. Draft me.
Besides….it’s not like were the only team that drat db’s or speed guys. give me a break.
Hey eye patch look that up.
April 27th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Only if AL and Kiff could have asked Ozzie who he would have picked. Then maybe Hawkins would be a Raider.
April 27th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Yeah Al, go and create the Oakland Track Team

TT: we gave away washington and have not addressed our needs at offensive line, or defensive for that matter. you said that o-linemen would be available now. what are we doing? how would you spin this draft so far?
April 27th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
We passed on the healthy local kid Lavelle Hawkins of CAL who played against Pac-10 competition (+Tennessee) to take an injured kid from a small school with similar career statistics. WTF? Oh, I forgot, Shields had a big game against VANDERBILT before he went down for the season…whooptidooo!
This is especially puzzling since Lavelle’s nickname is “The Hawk” and you know how Al gets a big boner for guys with speedy names…like “Rocket” Ismael and James Jett. Maybe a hawk isn’t fast enough for speed obsessed Al. Maybe if Lavelle was “The Hummingbird” he would have been the pick.
I would really like to see the Raiders sign soon-to-be-free agent receiver Robert Jordan of CAL (and Hayward High) who had a very nice college career, timed better than expected at CAL’s Senior Day and who happens to be….Jamarcus Russell’s cousin. But then, I have no faith that Al would do something like that..it makes too much sense.

“I love this pick. I noticed this guy before the draft. Here is what I posted on the guy back in March, after the combine…
So awhile back I started crunching the combine numbers for WRs, mostly because the Raiders were thin at WR (I started this before they signed Walker and Carter). Anyway this guy Shields really jumped out to me. Partly because he one of only two WRs that actually participated in every event (the other being Kentucky’s Burton), but also because he performed very well at the events. Check it out:
Age: 22½
Height: 6′0½” - ranks 25th out of 52 measured WRs
Weight: 194 - 37th out of 52
40 Time: 4.44 - 9th out of 48
Bench: 19 reps - 7th out of 24
Vertical: 37.5″ - 2nd out of 26
Short Shuttle: 3.96 - 1st out of 10
Long Shuttle: 10.87 - 1st out of 10
Broad Jump: 10′08″ - 2nd out of 11
3-Cone Drill: 6.67 - 2nd out of 8
I don’t really know anything about the guy’s skills, having not seen a Richmond Spiders game except for a few highlights that didn’t really pertain to Shields. He caught 12 passes against Vandy last year before suffering a knee injury in week 2. The knee seems to be ok to post those kind of numbers.
The main concerns seem to be his durability (missed 7 games his first 3 years before missing 10 more games as a senior), college competition (played at an FCS school), and size (he’s slightly undersized for an NFL WR).
But the positives are tremendous quickness, solid deep speed, and good enough upper-body strength to block and handle jams. He should be able to separate on short, intermediate, and deep routes, and also run after the catch, unless he just has lousy instincts.
I guess the reason I started crunching the numbers is that I feel like the other combine events (broad jump, shuttles, 3-cone drill) are more telling than the media gives them credit for. Unfortunately most players don’t do a lot of them, but it’s still impressive to see a guy do so well at all of them. Shields looks like a pretty good athlete, I am thinking he could be a steal in round 4 or so.”
April 27th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Raiders never pick local talent as a matter of fact they picked the cornerback out of Conneticut because he ran the second fastest time in the combine and he is from the Syracuse area.
Last year the Raiders missed out on James Jones now with Green Bay, this year they missed out on Dwight Lowery-NYJ and Hawkins-Titans. In three years these guys will be serviceable in the league and the two players we picked will still be around because AL picked them and cant admit that speed doesn’t make a football player.
April 27th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
R U Kidding. Lavell Hawkins not to mention Josh Barret, and some o fthe other LB’s that were still out there…this is not a a damn beauty contest or a track meet….i really think i am done this year i cant take the old man and his senile BS!
April 29th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Hey Peeps,
LOL @ Raidur45 comment. I know we are questiong their decisions but when you look at the big picture for Shields to achieve what he did at the combine coming off an injury…hes going to be explosive!!! obviously a huge talent that everyone who has something negative to say is missing. Many great ones comes from small schools. I’ll bet anyone that hell make it through traning camp and in the pre season games we’ll see what we gained. Raidur45 dont be done this year were building for the future and a better record in 2008 onwards so show up and support..the old man lol..I dont think hes gone senile yet lol
