Raiders take SDSU WR
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, April 27th, 2008 at 2:41 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Using a compensatory selection from losing free agent defensive end Bobby Hamilton to the New York Jets, the Raiders took San Diego State wide receiver Chaz Schillens with their only in the seventh round, No. 226 overall.
The Raiders dealt their other seventh-round pick for the right to move up and take defensive back Tyvon Branch in the fourth round. He has run sub 4.4 times in the 40-yard dash times and has a 43-inch vertical leap. In three seasons at San Diego State, Schilens had 103 receptions for 1,603 yards and scored seven touchdowns.
Schilens is also apparently a willing blocker. In his combine question and answer session, Washington State defensive back Husain Abdullah listed Schilens as the player who hit him the hardest.
“He got me on a good crack back,” Abdullah said.
Barring any trades to pick up another seventh-round pick, the Raiders have concluded their 2008 draft.

I am so piss’t off!!!! The Raiders got McFadden and then just sat back and did nothing!!!! Last year, Moss for who Bowie? This year Washington for who?
April 27th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Bring out the dead! Bring out the dead! Thank God that’s over…and I stayed up until almost 6AM?
April 27th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
The AVERAGE 40 time of this draft class is 4.39, that’s insane…………for several reasons albeit, but insane………….
April 27th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
What about adding Jamie Silva as undrafted…
Silva in SnB =) just for the jersey then?
LOL
April 27th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
In the last three rounds, we are nothing if not predictable . . .
NFL | Schilens works out at Pro Day
Wed, 12 Mar 2008 20:31:17 -0700
J.J. Pesavento, of Next Level Scouting, reports San Diego State WR Chaz Schilens measured a height of 6-foot-3 7/8 and a weight of 208 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds and 4.39 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.14 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.82 seconds. He measured a 43-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-3 broad jump and completed 16 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
[Insert personal conspirosy theory here]…wow, just wow
April 27th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Ok. This another example of a fine pick if you operate in a vaccum. Walker, Curry, Carter, Shields, JLH,now Chazz.
On the other hand
Burgess, Richardson, Edwards, and Scott if he plays DE. So if brittle Burgess gets hurt we’ve got Richardson and Edwards starting with Scott as #1 back-up?
Good to know we got the #5 & #6 WR spots wrapped up. Oh wait DMAC can go out wide so we drafted the #6 and #7 WR’s? Funny, last year we only carried 5 WR’s didn’t we?
April 27th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
I think Chaz is going to be the third piece in the Raiders “Big Three”. Russel, McFadden, and Schilens.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Alright, Justin Forsett to the Seahawks!
April 27th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
The Raiders drafted a bunch of athletes and only one football player.
Worst draft ever.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Dakota
That midget will be a Pro Bowler if not this year, the next. Congrats on getting your guy elected. Now that he’s a raider I’ll definitely support him.
I knew my midget was going early and that proved true at #6. Fortunately we will not have to play against him all that often. I’m glad he ended up with the Saints. I enjoy watching and rooting for them. actually, I just like visiting New Orleans - good music, great food, great southern culture, etc., etc., etc.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Martin…
which one is the football player? Branch or Scott?
April 27th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
with this guy being a good blocker as a WR, looks like we’ll have some plays in which Mcfadden bounces to the outside
April 27th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Oh man I am tiirrreed! Long weekend with the lady. Now that I see who we have picked can some please tell me WHAT THE FUK HAPPENED???~!!! Sheeezzz!
Man did I want Chris Long - those freakin’ Lambs - goddamn them. I bet Kiffin wanted Long hands down too. But NOW we have a backfield that stocked to the heavens. WTF? I suspect McFadden will be used all over (including WR) b/c I just can’t see him touting the rock all day with all these other backs on the roster. GEEZZUSSS! I mean you’ve got Justin Fargas, Dhominic Rhodes, Michael Bush, LaMont Jordan and NOW Darren McFadden. Completely unnecessary. I can see LJ’s cut but who’s next? Dom? Bush? We can’t go in the season with all these damn backs who all have a legitimate cry for playing time. I’m gonna just sit back and see how the hell they fix this.
But as I look at the board I can see why they picked McFadden: Long is gone, Dorsey is a strict 3tech, Gholston is high risk but why not Ellis? I had them the day before if we stayed at #4 (1.Long 2.Ellis 3.McFadden/Gholston)
April 27th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
all of these guys are also great character guys, great in the locker room, and great work ethic, we got the best athletes in the draft, but they have great motors and great intangibles, they are football players
April 27th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Well, I suppose we’re about set now with our roster. I can’t see too many trades happening unless we part with someone valuable.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
this last WR guy we drafted from San Diego has an attitude problem - anger management or something as well- maybe if he gains seventy lbs he can play DL
April 27th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
WR take some years to develope - What are we suppose to do?? Draft WR’s next year after Drew Carter’s contract is over and only have Javon Walker who is injury prone??? It was key to get JaMarcus some weapons and we did -
April 27th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
coach on wheels
your right, we now have to many WR, but remember some may not make the team, and kiffin said he doesn’t want to over use mcfadden
April 27th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
COW…
yeah and that was a problem, for some time even only 4 WR… I think Kiffin wont try that again or something..
April 27th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
And don’t forget Walker, Carter, and Curry all have ainjury history
April 27th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
TT - you have been right on so far- I hope youre right about their coachability as well - because we just drafted a whole lot of potential with not too many NFL ready guys - we are going to see them on ST’s for now I guess - We will have the fastest coverage teams at least!
April 27th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
perhaps JLH will be converted to CB =) heheh
April 27th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Another year, another terrible draft. It is time for Davis to hand the reins to someone else. His time of being a draft genius is past and now he makes Matt Millen look good.
Once again the Raiders completely ignored their largest areas of need.
Sadly, it looks like another losing season.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
BBB…
your guy dunlap is gone too now…
April 27th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
No OT, no DT (Rubin and Moore were RIGHT THERE!!!), and 1 late round, although maybe a good catch, project guy DE? WTF happened? Yet 2 more freakin’ WRs? Who screwed this pooch?
So this project DE automatically makes the team b/c WE ONLY HAVE 3!!! WTF?
I did like the PR/KR/CB pick. You guys know how bad we need someone back there on STs! Dom would not have cut it and Hall is too expensive.

F- today for the Raiders I’ll stand by that and take all the heat you throw at me for it, but I hope this 6′4 leaper turns out to be good, and of couse McFadden is a beast, but write this down…The rest wont even make the team, let alone start. Thanks for the new practice squad Al!
April 27th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
TT: i am no more irrational than the next guy and never cynical when it comes to the raiders. i am, though, puzzled and disappointed by a draft that brings us a potentially fine running back and no one to help him realize his potential. you said “trenchmen” would be available in the later rounds. what happened? this is the strangest draft we have had in years.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
If all these guys make the roster, we are going to have so many weapons in all aspects of the game,
If even only a few get on board, its still going to be lights out,..
I’m good with what we got.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
chris henry! chris henry! chris henry!
April 27th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I couldn’t agree more Voldemort. I would give them a lower grade than that if there was one. This is now two years in a row that they get an F.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
WoW - an F for last years draft - I can’t even comment on that!
April 27th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
It doesn’t matter HOW MANY weapons the Raiders have because they don’t have anyone to block for them and they have nobody to stop the run or pressure the opposing QB. Anybody that understands football AT ALL will tell you that it is won in the trenches and yet the Raiders have ignored both lines two years in a row even though both years that was their greatest area of need.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Yes Doe, an F. If you compare what they got with what they COULD have had, they get an F.
April 27th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
“F” for last year’s draft? The one that gave us THREE starters and another guy with major playing time (Oren)? Tell me, what color is the sky on your planet?
April 27th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
If any of those DTs we passed up for WRs and kick returners turns into a decent pro, I will pesonally kick Al Davis’ ugly azz teeth in.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
that was pretty bad
April 27th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
JD #44 sadly, yes…
April 27th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Hey Nation, don’t get distressed about the last few rounds. We are just shopping for some talent, not addressing needs. Our roster is effectively set for September and we only have a few positions with a question:
QBs: Russell, Walter
RBs: McFadden, Fargas, Rhodes, Bush
FBs: Griffith, O’Neal
TEs: Miller, Madsen, Wakefield
WRs: Walker, Carter, Curry, Higgins, Sheilds, Schilens
OTs: Harris, Green, Henderson, Wilson
OGs: Gallery, Carlisle, Morris
Cs: Wade, Grove
K/P/LS: Lechler, Janikowski, Condo
CBs: Hall, Asomugha, Routt, Branch, Bowie, Johnson
Ss: Wilson, Huff, Cooper, Baker,Eugene
LBs: Howard, Morrison, Thomas, Alston, Williams
DE: Burgess, Richardson, Edwards, Scott
DTs: Kelly, Sands, Joseph, Warren
April 27th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Eh hemm…Retorical Question…where the Raiders 6th in rushing O last year?
April 27th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I give them a C for this draft
A+ for the first round
F- for the 4th round
C for the 6th and 7th rounds
April 27th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I was very happy with last years draft, and was happy with McFadden, but the rest was Bull Sh*t. The NO-name 7th round choice of reciever looks promising, at least he is the style of player we need, but the waisted 4th round round no name reciever almost made me puke. As did the 800,000th CB we added to the roster for the sheer purpose of his “speed” but at least he can return kicks for us now that car is gone.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Lacking a 2nd and 3rd round pick really hurt this team. Really hurt. But it could’ve been somewhat rectified with Moore or Rubin late. Man they must have supreme confidence is Sands. I just don’t get it. I guess I’ll just have to see it. Stocking on two positions that we are more or less already stock?
Big vote of confidence: Terdell Sands, Kwame Harris, Mario Henderson, and 3 DEs. Boy on boy, I hope it all works out.
Donnie Avery? The 1st WR off the boards? Sheez that was a complete shocker.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Eh Hemm…Fact…If the Raiders are 6th in rushing this Year they will have won the Trench war on the Offensive side of the ball
April 27th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
NFL.COM—-RECAP
Round 1 Darren McFadden RB 6′1″ 211 Arkansas
Pick Analysis: Arguably the most talented player in the draft, McFadden brings a big-play threat to Oakland. He will offer a compliment to quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who was the first overall pick in 2007. He has exceptional acceleration and upper body strength.
Round 4 Tyvon Branch CB 6′0″ 204 Connecticut
Pick Analysis: Branch is strong, fast and has started for four years. His measurables have been exceptional. Branch’s strong workout numbers compare to only five other players at his position and four have played in the Pro Bowl, while the fifth is a quality contributor in the NFL.
Round 4 Arman Shields WR 6′1″ 194 Richmond
Pick Analysis: Shields did not have as good a senior year as he did as a junior, but he’s still tall and he’s fast. He ran a 4.37 40 and also had impressive cone drill numbers. He’s a guy who can amass yards after the catch and make plays.
Round 6 Trevor Scott DE 6′5″ 256 Buffalo
Pick Analysis: Scott is a tall defensive end, with speed. He has great workout numbers, but his production on the field was somewhat lacking. He needs to demonstrate on the field the talent that his workout numbers indicate he could be capable of.
Round 7 Chaz Schilens WR 6′4 208 San Diego State
Pick Analysis: Schilens excites people because of his exceptional size and speed. Due to his pure athleticism, he will have a chance to make the roster. He still needs some polish as a receiver.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
The sky is still blue here Raider Duck. Let’s look at it. They got JaMarcus Russel who didn’t play so we don’t even KNOW what kind of player he will be in the end. Then they got Zach Miller.
If they had traded out of the #01 spot they could have had Adrian Peterson, Tony Ugoh, and Joe Staley, just to start. That would have provided them with a solid base and a elite RB for years to come.
The fact is, you don’t need a star QB to win games. You need a SMART QB, and sadly, Russel isn’t the brightest of the bunch. He could very easily fail. Even if he suceeds, it was still the wrong pick.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Terrapin…
McFadden - didn’t like the pick, well i get over it
Tyvon Branch - I liked it really a lot
Arman Shields - Did not like it all - waste (Red Bryant)
Trevor Scott - Liked it really really a lot, best pick
Chaz Schilens - Good pick - I like it, him or Arrington
April 27th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
#44 JD - I know ball and yes it is in the trenches that the game is won or lost, but we have people on board that are already developed, and good to go. Not big name draft choices, but good to go.
Or are you now thinking that you know more about these guys than the raider coaching staff?
April 27th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Cal had five players taken. The Pac 10 is legit.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
nice recap bob
April 27th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Eventhough the descusting descisions by the Raiders were pretty depressing today, I’m even more depressed that the draft is over. Life just isn’t the same in the offseason is it.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
The Raider roster is SO FAR from set it isn’t even funny. They have NO depth at DT and they are going to get run over like crazy again. They should have taken Dorsey, screw the fact that he is a 3-technique. Kelly has played every position on the line and he could play either one so that was a shoddy excuse.
The fact is that the Raiders once again ignored the most important part of their football team and instead stocked it with a bunch of players that won’t be able to succeed without a line.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Thanks BART I´m a master copier, paster…..
April 27th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
That’s what I’m say LMN why the fuk are you picking another WR when you’ve got these mosters in the middle still available? I just don’t get it. Unless you believe none of them are better than Sands. (wtf?)
April 27th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
#62 It’s simple Jock Strap..We just need to get a life…lol
April 27th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
NEW POST
April 27th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Bishop916, I never said I knew more than the coaching staff. But the coaching staff isn’t the one making the decisions. Al Davis is and I have to say that at this point I do believe I know better than he. I would never have said that 10 years ago but the last decade their drafting has been flat-out awful. Since 2000 they have only had TWO years where they got more than one player out of their draft. That does not count 2007 yet because we really don’t know enough about it yet.
I know we already have players that are OK, but the thing is, the problems that the Raiders have had for the past 5 years ALWAYS come back to the same thing. Either the offensive or defensive line. Instead of wasting picks on superfluous backs they should be used for lineman that can anchor us for the next decade.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Our O-line will be even better this year, and if we sign Grady and Spikes or Colvin, I will be just fine with this draft. If Turd fails again this year we can get that NT in next year’s draft.
The key is getting a couple of those vets as stop-gaps for run D help.
Our run D should be better anyhow, because of:
1. Kelly replacing Sapp;
2. Wilson stopping those long runs that Stu and Huff couldn’t;
3. Hall cutting off the outside, unlike Washington;
4. Teams having to score some points against us because of our improved O.
I still have hope for 10-6 baby.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
most of us havent seen these guys play n are already doubting.the whinning, the whinning, im not 1 to judge a book by its cover. ron curry was a 5th nobody knew and look how that turned out. we never know how these players turn out until they play and just because you dont know them doesnt mean they cant. say what you want but al has more knowledge of the game and of players than anybody on this board so i trust his brain mre than anyone on this board including jerry.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
so the rest of our needs will be filled with cast-offs from other teams?
teams that drafted a player almost as good as their vet, but way younger? is it a bunch of 2 year players we are looking for? last stop before retirement?
I could live with that, get some character guys with routine around these young egos
April 27th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
The thing is, Al Davis appears to be so enamored with speed in his old age that he considers NOTHING else, unless it comes to JaMarcus Russel and I STILL can’t figure that one out.
Hell, we still don’t know if Andrew Walter could have succeeded or not. For all we know he could have been great if he had a line to block for him and an elite RB to take pressure off him, see #57.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Bob,
Maybe the Raiders will get your boy Tommy Blake in UDFA now, we are gonna need a lot more warm bodies at DE just to get through mini-camp since Burgess won’t show up.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
New thread
April 27th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
McFadden - the best player on the board and almost unpassable.
Tyvon Branch - Could make a great nickel/FS, will make a great Special Teams player.
Arman Shields - Very quick and if recovered from injury has the size/hands to be a force. A bigger upside than many of the other 4th round WRs.
Trevor Scott - Has all the physical gifts but doesn’t have the experience or the exposure. Again, a better long-term option than the other available DEs.
Chaz Schilens - Great physique, great attitude and could be a stunning bargain.
We loaded the roster in FA and addressed all the key needs through vets. This draft was all about acquirin weapons and upgrading on talent. I think we have done okay.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Moss Hater, I don’t think people are judging the players and saying they will suck. They are judging the decision to use the pick on something we don’t need instead of taking a chance on a lineman or something. I would rather flip the coin on a player at a position we could use then at a position where they will likely get cut in camp.

Scottish, Yes, McFadden was the best player on the board but not by that much. He was far from unpassable and I guarantee that 28 of the 32 teams in the league, if they had been in the exact same position, would have drafted Dorsey or Gholston. We don’t need a breakaway star at that position right now. We just need someone to churn out the yards. We really need an LT that can stop a speed rush or a DT that can stop the run.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
#77 sure is a sad sight.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
JD, I hear you, I know I have been scratching my head alot the lat few years re: some of the picks, but I can say that the woes at OL was mostly coaching related, until Cable came on board, now we got #6 rush attack wtih mediocre staff. DL was mostly the unexplainable need to play Sapp and other guys that were not giving 100%, but given what was available, I think they are going with what we have and filling some needs at ST and at least giving us some options / development at WR and DE.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
i have never criticized al davis or lane kiffin on this or any other blog. i have always been a loyal fan. but what the h@ll do the raiders expect to accomplish with this bunch? i can hear the giggles starting in the east, and soon we will be awash with laughter from the press. and this time i hang my head, for i have no good answer…
April 27th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Hey guys dont forget non draftees, and June 1st drops and pickups to fill holes. I think we blew our load in offseason pickups, and most of these draft pickups are iffy anyway. Give me a proven veteran over a pick anyday…..Pete
April 27th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Bishop916, I agree a bit. I wouldn’t say it was MOSTLY coaching related but there were definitely some coaching related issues.
Granted, Cable is a great coach and the line did better last year. The run blocking that is. The pass blocking still leaves a lot to be desired. Pass blocking is more about player skill and less about scheme. It still happens way to often where a DE comes around that left edge, whacks our QB, and then we have a fumble. Until they get a great LT that will continue to happen. And Kwame is no better than Barry and stopping an elite speed rush.
But even if you want to say that the O-line will be sufficient this year you cannot ignore the fact that the defensive line is terrible. I have always liked Tommy Kelly and even though they overpaid him, I understand that they had to so that he would stay with a bad team. He is a solid DT but he has nobody next to him and there is no depth. They are going to get destroyed by the opponents run game again.
The fact is that there is nobody on the entire line on either side that is not replaceable. Almost every team has at least one guy on one line, either defense or offense, that is completely indispensible. The closest the Raiders come is Derrick Burgess but he has been off his game.
They need to concern themselves less with role players and more with protecting the players they have and disrupting the opposing offense. Until they do so they will continue to lose. And unfortunately, it appears that as long as Davis is at the helm, they will continue to make these inexplicable choices.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
I have always been a fan of Al Davis and I have always supported him until now. I gave him the benefit of the doubt as long as I could but this draft pretty much sums up what I already knew. He had lost it. He has no idea what he is doing anymore. The man has done great things for the Raiders and great things for the NFL but it is time for him to step down and let someone else make the important decisions.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
the fact is we did not address as many concerns as we hoped for but like free agency and trades will even up this crappy draft there wasn’t that much depth in this draft I don’t get the later picks. I mean we really drafted a kick returner at round 4 wow
April 27th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
The problem is PcBlack, that the holes are WAY too big to fill with castoffs from other teams.
I won’t go into it again but you can read my previous posts and you’ll get my point.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
We didn’t address ANY concerns El Dirty. Not this year. Not last year.
April 27th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Anyways, I am done. I have other things to do besides sit here and bang my head against a wall.
Looks like another L O N G year but hopefully it will all end soon.
April 27th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
brutal brutal brutal draft - whoever orchestrated this weekend’s mess should be ashamed. my guess would be 2 of the 5 drafted are on the payroll come week 1.
April 27th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Hmmm if harris is ok at LT,Gallery is good,Good at Center, right guard. If Mcquistan pans out at right tackle were ok…As far as dt the just run fillers..At least Al is trying to spend money ,castoffs, underachievers are our MO…..How did guys like Romo,Woodson,Gannon,Kennedy work out? Ok i guess……Wilson and Hall are money pickups….If we can just blitz the qb we will be ok,the offense needed a upgrade, and that excatly what we got….Our D was on the field to much…..Hey at least we dont have to watch MCCrap anymore,he sucked big time……P

Michael Bush and McFadden will be the starters and Fargas will go back to the backup role he belongs in. Once we have Bush and McFadden in the backfield the run game is going to be incredible.
I also like the receiving corp now.
Unfortunately, I still don’t see where we’re going to stop the run.

ok AL, I know gambling can be a good think on SOME players but….if the players run a fast 40 and have had a serious injury. That shouldn’t be a Prerequisite to draft them!!! I thought we’d at least look at 1 DT. Remember James Jett, dropit bismal, calvin branch, and I forget the piece of garbage that we just dropped (pardon the Pun) the other year! Seen him get hit in the head and everywhere else with the ball but couldn’t catch a cold! was waiting for better trades with the 9 DB’s and 6plus RB’s we have now. not sure what just happened in that draft. maybe my wife spiked my coffee this weekend and I will really see what the Raiders did when I snap out of it.

Given our late round picks, I’m assuming that we would sign a DT (Grady Jackson), a LB (like Danny Clark?) and an OL (free agent? trade?)
Thoughts?

Raiders are ready for football, lets roll.
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have the weakest Offensive and Defensive lines in the league, by far. The #6 rush ranking is even more deceptive than our joke of a #3 ranking on defense the year before. Our offensive line is beyond pathetic and adding gay “lame” harris does absolutley nothing to improve that. In fact he’s much much worse than Barry Sims. Tommy Kelly and Sands will get destroyed against the run and we will rank at the bottom of the league in stopping the run again. The fact of the matter is that we are not going to win the super bowl this year or even make the playoffs. We were best off using conventional wisdom and taking the best player available regardless of position or need. We did that. at least DMC will make us a bit more exciting.

The CB isn’t there to start on defense right away. He’s there to return kicks because Hall isn’t going to do it AND WE LOST CARR.
WE DRAFTED HIM FOR SPECIAL TEAMS REASONS, NOT TO PLAY ON D.

In today’s draft we got…
Darren McFadden
DeAngelo Hall
Mario Henderson
Tyvon Branch
Gerald Warren
Arman Shields
Trevor Scott
Chaz Schilens
Not too bad really, although I would have taken Dorsey instead of McFadden.

great draft guys….8 and 8 at least this year. GO Raiders!

Good draft gentlemen! That’s 2 years in a row I can say that. Wish we would’ve had more picks but good job with what we had anyway.
We’re going to score and score often!

Hands down the worst draft in the history of the NFL - AND THIS ENTIRE DRAFT REAKS OF AL DAVIS TAKING FULL CONTROL AND DRAFTING BUST-LETES - How the hell can you trade a corner for a pick then draft another corner? If we grabbed a DE or DT with that trade, or an OLB then that would have helped, but these players are all small school projects…Al must be having flashbacks to 1972…only HE can see the greatness of the Chazz.
I knew we were going after McFadden after Al signed Tommy Kelly and pronounced him DT and then got Edwards. Hopefully McFadden produces, cuz none of these other terds are going to do jack squat in the NFL.
SPEED KILLS - OURSELVES.
Get some damn football players from a football school. Instead Joe Badazz from Michigan we get Chazz Chillinhisazzoff from UCSTD.
Whatever, I loved last years draft with the exception of over drafting Mario Henderson - Quentin Moses was doing well and should have been given the chance to bulk up and play - that’s what you do with your 3rd round and later picks. Mario was projected to be a 5th round pick and based on his playing time last year, should have been cut. JR, Miller, O’Neal, Rich, and maybe Bush, JLH or Mario will all do well, and that was a Kiff draft - this was a typical Al draft. What a joke.
Time for sleep, I’ll complain more later, but I will say this, I’m excited to see McFadden in S&B even though he wasn’t a need pick.

The Raiders still need to sign a run stopping linebacker in free agency. Invisible Sam Williams is not the answer.
April 29th, 2008 at 9:50 am
It was an OK draft.
Just because you need help in position means you should ignore better players to fill need.
Taking a bunch of 4th, 6th and 7th round DL made no sense. Al took the one who he thinks has a chance to stick.
The future of the Raider franchise is JaMarcus Russell and priority one is surrounding JR with play makers.
Fargas, Jordan and Rhodes is a list. For a fantasy football guy maybe that list would do. However, not one of those guys is a playmaker. We were at the bottom of the league in making plays down the field (20 yards or more). The way to insure that Russell’s transition into the NFL is a successful one is to surround him with play makers. The Colts didn’t break in Manning with a bunch of journey men backs.
It is hard to score in the NFL today, more then in the past rules and defensive schemes require a successful offensive team to make plays down the field.
McFadden gives us that ability and provides a safety blanket for essentially a rookie QB.
If JR fails it wouldn’t matter where we rank in run defense. It JR fails over these next 2 to 3 seasons it wouldn’t matter if we have too few DEs.
In the NFL today everything starts with the QB.
NE can draft for need because they have Brady. If you have Tom Brady drafting is a snap and furthermore you have room for mistakes. The Pats have drafted their share of Busters and reaches. However Tom Brady cures most ills for them.
If JR fails we will be in a world of hurt in 5 years.
He has to succeed.
McFadden is the first piece to help in that project.
Next year we think about WRs or a LT in the draft or in FA depending on how the 2008 season progresses.
The short-sighted nature of some of these posts is amazing.
We are in a really delicate phase. We made a decision to build long term when we took JR. We also essentially hooked the future of this franchise not just on but off the field on this young man’s back.
For the very last time (and I hope some of the folks whining because we didn’t draft 5 defensive linemen) realize the urgency JaMarcus Russell succeeds or the Raiders as a viable franchise in Oakland is at stake.
