Roster numbers
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, May 1st, 2008 at 12:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The roster on Raiders.com has assigned the following numbers to new draft picks:
No. 20–Darren McFadden
No. 33–Tyvon Branch
No. 82–Chaz Schilens
No. 84–Arman Shields
No. 91–Trevor Scott
The Raiders have made any official announcements regarding the signing of undrafted free agents, and typically don’t confirm such signings until they attend the rookie minicamp.
The Raiders rookie minicamp begins May 9.
Multiple outlets have reported the Raiders have signed 12 free undrafted free agents, all of which have been posted on this blog. It’s unlikely that more than one will actually make the 53-man roster; most are hoping for a shot at the practice squad or an invitation to another camp.
The signees:
TE Chris Wagner, South Dakota State; LB Shane Simmons, Western Washington; LB Malik Jackson, Louisville; C Adam Spieker, Missouri; S Darrick Brown, McNeese State; QB Brian White, Portland State; TE Darrell Strong, Pittsburgh; OL Brandon Rodd, Arizona State; FB Matt Hahn, Penn State; DE Greyson Gunheim, Washington’ DE Derrick Gray, Texas Southern.
Darrick Brown is the prototypical Raiders free agent signing. He and his brother Marcus, who signed as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals, are also track and field athletes. They rank 1-2 in the long jump in the Southland Conference, with Darrick’s best at 25-0 3/4 and Marcus at 24-5.
Darrick, 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, was the Southland Conference triple jump champion in 2006.

This kid may be a great steal…

Dominic Rhodes is a cry baby, we paid him a ton of cash to come here and all he did was pee himself in a taxi cab and get suspended for 4 games and then complain like a little school girl because he got punished for it.
When we sign you as a free agent and we pay you more than any other team will, we expect you to make an immediate impact and not come to town to party get drunk and get suspended then complain about the way your benched because you let the team down.
What a victim, cry me a river you loser. Lets see who takes him and how much they are wiling to pay him.
May 1st, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Isn’t Jason Taylor some dancer? Why the eff would we trade one dancer for another? Ha! Oh! Ha!
May 1st, 2008 at 12:28 pm
One of the comments from raiderfan.net:
The Raiders would have to cut quite a few players to make enough cap space for that deal. It would be an awesome trade for the Raiders, but Lamont’s contract is over $4 million for 2008 and Jason Taylor gets paid quite a bit as well.
And yes, Bill Parcells would have to be VERY drunk to do that trade.

Is Trevor Scott gonna be the new Tyler Brayton? Maybe…

What up, Thro. How’s Utah treating you?
As far as RF.net goes, if it’s not from a guy named “WillisdaRaider”, it’s fan gossip. Willis is their inside guy, and all of his rumors are in their premium section.
May 1st, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Yeah, haven’t read that thread yet over at RF.net, but I just cannot believe Parcells would even THINK of doing that trade, as much as we’d all love for it to happen…
May 1st, 2008 at 12:41 pm
That article can’t be right. It said we would get Taylor and a conditional draft pick for Jordan?
May 1st, 2008 at 12:41 pm
And let’s hope Scott is NOT the next Sparkler, errrr, Brayton. And I don’t mind McFadden being #20- gives him his own Raider legacy to live up to, rather than taking Bo’s #34 (although it’s been defiled quite profusely by Cartman the last few years anyway)…

I think that Spieker, Gunheim and Strong have very good chances to make this team.
May 1st, 2008 at 12:51 pm
C Adam Spieker, Missouri may make the team, if the Raiders decide to part ways with grove and keeping Morris as the #2 backup.
May 1st, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I am sure Scott will be no Brayton. Brayton was not ever a good pass rusher even in college. Scott is a very inexperienced DE, but he is a best as a pass rusher at least at lower level D1.
May 1st, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Actually, the Raiders signed Rhodes with the knowledge that he would be under a four game suspension from testing preceding the signing. Therefore, they knew from the beginning that he was only a 12 game pickup, at least for last year.
If Jordan had lasted two more games, it may have been Rhodes rather than Fargas who stepped in and had a great season. But Fargas had that great game against Miami before Rhodes was eligible, and from there, the writing was on the wall.
As for Jason Taylor, it would be great to have him, but I don’t think the Raiders can afford the trade value. We already sacrificed most of this years draft. I’d rather not see us start sacrifice next years draft for guys on the back side of 30.
Jordan will be released as a cap casualty, because there is literally no one stupid enough to pay the trade cost when they can potentially have him on a veteran minimum contract. His injury history simply makes him not worth the risk. You also have to consider that if Miami wants him, they just have to wait, because they sit first in the waiver wire queue.
BTW: Did anyone else notice Mel Jr. saying he didn’t expect McFadden to have the top RB season because of the Raiders unsettled QB situation and the O-Line? That’s so funny, since the one thing under the current system (Cable’s version of cut blocking) that the O-Line does well is run block, and, barring injury, the Raiders will have only one QB next season. Mel knows college dudes, but I’m not sure he really knows pro teams, especially West of the Missippi (The old East Coast Bias raising its ugly head).
May 1st, 2008 at 12:56 pm
What happened to Grove… … he was supposed to be the steal of the draft that year… … could never get the strength to be a center…
May 1st, 2008 at 12:57 pm
In today’s “So, what does Amy Trask do, anyway?” news:
(05-01) 11:49 PDT — Raiders owner Al Davis is reorganizing his front office and could bring in a new salary capologist and contract negotiator, a league source said Thursday.
Rams executive Samir Suleiman, the team’s director of football operations since 2000, is among those being looked at. A source within the Rams organization confirmed his candidacy Thursday.
Suleiman said he hasn’t been contacted by the Raiders and was unaware of any opening. Asked if he’d be interested, he sounded very much so.
“It’s a great organization, so anybody would be lucky to work for them,” Suleiman said in a phone interview. “And, black is my favorite color.”
Suleiman, 32, was a finalist for a similar position in Green Bay earlier this year.
His expertise lies in salary-cap management and player negotiations. He was also involved in Rams’ trades, pro personnel and player procurement.
Suleiman served on the NFL Management Council in 1997, monitoring the league-wide cap and analyzing player contracts. He then spent two years with the Jaguars as manager of contract information.
He was involved in controversy in 1995 when the Rams reprimanded him for leaving a threatening phone message with a newspaper columnist.
For the past year, finance executive Marc Badain and director of football operations Mark Jackson shared salary cap and contract duties, though Davis became increasingly hands-on during the recent free-agent period.
The job was previously held by Michael Lombardi, who was let go after the 2007 draft.
If Suleiman is hired, his priority will be keeping the salary-cap books in order. One reason the Raiders released running back Dominic Rhodes this week was to offset the cap hit from the Fabian Washington trade, which threatened to push them over the limit.
He’d also assume a lead role in pending contract talks with No. 4 overall draft pick Darren McFadden, who will command a contract in the $50 million range with at least $20 million guaranteed.
The Raiders hope to avoid a repeat of last season’s holdout by No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell, who was not signed until after the season started.

Truth is, this was Mark Jackson’s job. Another indication that the media wasn’t making up the Kiffin/Davis drama. Oh, this and Rhode’s input two days ago, which also concurred with media reports of Kiffin being snipped of any control.

We’ve been flooded today with e-mails from PFT Planeteers in Philly asking about Internet reports (man, I hate those) that the Eagles have inked Oklahoma State receiver Adarius Bowman.
Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the Eagles have not signed Bowman. We’re also told that they will not sign him.
Bowman was expected to be a first-day draft pick. An April 14 guilty plea to marijuana possession hurt him, and he ultimately wasn’t drafted.
(We should bring him in…hes a good WR with my last name.)

May 1st, 2008 at 1:37 pm
I’m well aware Davis is the boss. And, his record as the boss in recent years would indicate that him being the boss is the problem. We need rebels underneath him, like Kiffin and Jackson. Not another yes man.
May 1st, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I posted the other day that i hope we draft somewhere in this range in the espn mock.. any of these players will help..
19. Washington Redskins — Greg Hardy*, DE, Mississippi
Hardy is flying under the radar right now despite notching 10 solo sacks the past two seasons, and the Redskins will be looking for a young pass-rushing threat after failing to land one during the latest draft.
20. Minnesota Vikings — Percy Harvin*, WR/RS, Florida
Staying healthy for a full season would all but guarantee Harvin a spot in the first round of the NFL draft, either next year or in 2010.
21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Ciron Black, OT, LSU
The Bucs will be looking to enlist the services of a talented left tackle prospect such as Black, who displays quick feet for a 6-5, 315-pounder.
22. Green Bay Packers — Max Unger, OT, Oregon
Unger, who projects as a first-day pick in next year’s draft, is the type of versatile lineman the Packers typically covet.
23. Cleveland Browns — Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson
Sapp is an up-and-coming talent with outstanding speed and pass-rushing potential. He should fit perfectly as a rush linebacker in a 3-4 scheme like the one employed in Cleveland.
The guy i really want is this guy just for the fact his dad was a road warrior..
James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State: Is he the next Andy Katzenmoyer or the next A.J. Hawk? I’ll go with the latter. The son of former WWF star Animal (of the tag-team The Road Warriors) is a two-time All-American with a great NFL frame. A tackling machine, he’s already won a Butkus Award.

I believe I was the one who predicted D-Mac’s jersey #20. Not to toot my own horn but,,(insert horn from Dukes of Hazard). Anyway allow me to make some more predictions:
Justin Fargas will start the first few games eventually becoming trade bait.
D-Mac will take over the way Peterson did last year and will rush for at least 1,200 yds.
The Raiders win 11 games this season.
Lane Kiffin will be named coach of year.
Media will be upset because they will be forced to give the Raiders respect again. I hope Im right. YA KNOW?!
May 1st, 2008 at 2:06 pm
But those issues aren’t going to change. Davis runs the show. period.. Would you rather just sit here and vent about it over and over again?

Raider TW, I’m a Raider fan.
Alameda Insider is a pill popping drunk, flip flopping on practically a daily basis, and getting his “inside” predictions wrong at about a 100% rate. Why should I take his advice?
And, only someone who believes in Al Davis would also believe the DC madam actually killed herself. No surprise, there.

Per the LA Daily News UCLA lineman Shannon Tavega and Noah Sutherland have been invited to training camp. Both played under Tom Cable when he coached o-line/offense at ucla. Under Cable, Tavega was projected as a high draft pick. Two o-line coaches later he is a free agent signing.

10 minutes after they lost the AFC Championship game, there were 4 Chargers fans blogging away. What does that tell you??? It tells you their fans suck. That’s what it tells you. Here, months after another losing season we have hundreds of fans blogging every day. We have a great fan base. DeBartolo Raider, you’re not one fo them.

Sorry, TW, I now realize you were telling me to take the Alameda Insider “path”, as opposed to any advice of his. But, the answer’s no. I’m going to drop in from time to time and talk about this organization. If you don’t like it, I’m always open for debate. Or, you can just ignore me. And, Roller, just so you know, I was at the ‘97 Monday Nighter vs. KC, when they torched us at the very end. I was on the top deck, right above the black hole. The beer cups pelting Rison as him and the Queefs danced in the end zone were from our section. Moments later, there’s a Chief fan walking through the parking lot with a bright red, shining Chief jersey, yucking it up while walking past everyone. Nobody did anything. And, actually, I think that’s a good thing. You can’t condone thuggery and then complain when the press labels the Raider Nation as thugs. Truth is, most Raider fans are good people, and would get the Dorsey jersey joke. For those that don’t? I’m not afraid of them.

I have a trivia question, TW. Which former Raiders personnel assistant built a Super Bowl champion in the 1990s as GM of the Green Bay Packers, in a decade where the Raiders couldn’t crack the 8 win mark?
May 1st, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Whats up Sac Raider.
If ,,oops I mean when we win 11 games, I think other teams will try to push up on him. He’ll be the new pretty girl that all the guys compete for, he’ll be tempted (silently) but he will have a chance to become the man who brought back the Raiders to respectability again. Plus the action fan support will be too strong allow Al Davis to let Kiffin go. He will become the new face of the Raiders. Remember to get some Keep Kiffin T-shirts made and wear the to the games. I hope Im right. Peace Sac.
May 1st, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I must agree with Saint and Tommy, the two most likely UFAs to make the roster are:
Adam Spieker: Because we are not settled on the back-up to John Wade and because Speiker was a real powerhouse in the middle of the Missouri Oline. I was staggered that he wasn’t drafted. If he responds to Cable’s methods and fits the scheme, I think he could replace the less-than-stellar Mr Groves.
Greyson Gunheim: Because we need cover for Burgess and Richardson and because he has the physique. We hear all the good things about his character, the issue is whether he simply is a good enough footballer to play at the proLevel. The fact that Keith Millard got so involved to bring him to Alameda must mean he has a chance.
May 1st, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Rick The Hunter, I wish I could share your optimism on Kiffin’s longevity as HC. But it’s obvious you haven’t been paying attention to what’s been going on with this team since January. Or, you’re in denial of it.

HolyRoller, I’m just telling you what I saw. Granted, this was 1997 and back in those days you had a lot more real Raider fans, as opposed to so many of the young wannabe thugs that like the Raiders just for the unis, and that they have “Oakland” in their name, like “Runnin with 20″.
Wannabe thugs don’t scare me, anyway. Believe me, I’ll be at a game this year with my Dorsey jersey, with the chief emblem ripped off. I’m 6′3″, weigh 270, and am in decent shape for my mid 30’s. My last street fight was 7 years ago, but I do spar at the gym on occasion and I am in shape for it. Whatever wannabe thug takes a shot at me, I hope he knows how to fight. But I doubt anything will happen. A lot of these wannabe thug Raider fans are just that, wannabe thugs. All talk. Real thugs don’t take sports seriously. They just go to the games to have a good time. They’ve got enough on their plate with hood business. Whoever confronts me, I know they’ll be easy to handle.

Players under threat. Some 2007 Roster members who should be worried:
John Madsen: We know he has talent, we know he can catch and has good speed. But he is still a weak blocker and Kiff and Knapp don’t seem to have the greatest confidence in him.
Jake Grove: Too many injuries, to many missed opportunities. Clearly has talent but has never been the stud we thought/hoped he would become. Will be pressed had by Spieker and Boone for the No2 Center role.
Johnnie Lee Higgins: Great speed but looked like a rabbit in the headlights on the pitch. He should improve after another off-season but the competition has got much, much tougher.
Sam Williams: Lost out to Robert Thomas last season and never threatened the starting line-up. Another big disappointment - all the tools but not the instincts or the apparant desire.
Stuart Schweigert: Nice Guy, tries hard but doesn’t make the big plays and showed a worrying weakness in the tackle. Wilson, Branch and Baker have all joined the squad and Schweigert needs to really impose himself in camp to stand a chance of making the 53.
Chris Johnson: This has to be the breakthrough year for Johnson. Hall and Asomugha are set to start, Routt is the nickel and the prime backup CB. John Bowie will press for the next spot, leaving Johnson competing with Waddell and Starks. They are both proven vets and we need experience. Johnson needs a great camp.
Tony Stewart: John Wakefield will be fit and pressing hard for the blocking TE role. Stewart needs to hold him off and convince Kiff that a 3rd TE is a better than a 4th RB. Tough ask.
May 1st, 2008 at 2:51 pm

Alright Nation, 4 months of draft talk put me behind at work, so it took me a couple of days to catch up, but now I am back…what are we talking about these days?
May 1st, 2008 at 3:06 pm
im sick of hearing from everyone that we need o-line. I mean sure theres room to improve but we are in good shape with this crew. with one solid year of the zbs behind us we should be even better. last year every team we played knew we would run the ball 80% the time and we still did it effectively. Now with our obvious upgrades in our skilled positions we are set for an exciting year.
PREDICTIONS:
-Our offense plays at a similar caliber to the 2006 raiders defense
-Our defense plays even better then the 2006 group b/c there on the feild lot less of the time with our improved offense
-finish the season 10-6 with a wild card berth. dont count out taking the division from the chargers who i thinking tossed there chances away with there head coach hire
-LAST PREDICTION: I FEEL BAD FOR THE TEAMS THAT FALL BEHIND EARLY TO US AND HAVE TO PASS ON THAT SECONDARY, I HONESTLY CAN’T SEE WHERE A HOLE WILL BE……. (BESIDES THE BLACK HOLE)
IM OUT

MR,,
Im not in denial at all. Ive paid attention like everyone here on this blog. Every losing NFL team has tension with owners and coaches, thats why every year sports shows always have the coaches on the hot seat segments. The thing is its Al Davis’ Raiders so it’ll be magnified and blown out of control. Kiffin’s still here so it proved to be more headlines than actual truth. Plus the off season signings and the draft is suspose to bring out optimism for the team as well as the fans. Thats why rather than take shots at fellow fans I choose to share optimism with my Raider fans including you my man. PEACE!

MaddenRaider weren’t going to quit coming to this website? The fact that you’re gonna buy a Chiefs’ jersey tells us all about you.
May 1st, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Listen to Rick the Hunter. Yeah, did I want Dmac??? No, I actually wanted Sedrick Ellis who New Orleans traded up to get. The Saints already had two first rounders on the line in Smith and Grant when they went for Ellis. Have they been to the playoffs recently??? Well, they played in the NFC Championship game two years ago, so they have to be doing something right. Am I pissed beyond belief??? No, I agree with the choice and I agree with Rick that you have to be optimistic at this time in the year. Now if we had the overall number 4 and it went down like this:
Roger Goodell steps to the podium.
Goodell: “With the number four selection, the Oakland Raiders select, Aljozy Treblinka, Holder, Volograd Punchers, Russian League of American Football.”
Gasps from the crowd in Radio City Music Hall.
ESPN’s Mel Kuiper: “Whoah, we have the first surprise of the draft!! Treblinka is a 5′9″, 155lb, holder out of the Czech Republic. In four years Treblinka has never blown a hold, and in the Russian Federation Championship game, threw a touchdown on a botched snap that is still talked about as the greatest play in Russian League American Football history.”
Now if Davis did that…..We’d all be parading out side the Alameda facility with torches and pitchforks. I wanted Ellis. Jesus, we drafted Darren McFadden. What am I to do?? Cry?? Darren’s a great choice, and he is going to really help the team win. Should I be optimistic like Rick the Hunter??? Hell yeah!!!

Kiffin speaks
Since I don’t have SIRIUS NFL Radio, I rely on transcripts to be emailed to me, like the following from Raiders coach Lane Kiffin’s appearance on “Movin’ The Chains” with Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan yesterday.
The following are excerpts from the interview.
On Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell:
Lane Kiffin: “[His off-season] has been great. He’s working extremely hard. He’s here from about 7:30 in the morning until about 2:00 in the afternoon. He starts with football stuff in the classroom and then he goes into the weight room, lifts with the first group, and then goes out on the field and runs with them and then stays out and throws and goes through all the quarterback stuff on the field after that.”
On the team’s selection of RB Darren McFadden in last weekend’s NFL Draft:
Host, Pat Kirwan: “All kind of speculation that you were going to take [Glenn] Dorsey and you were going to do this that and the other thing. When it is all said and done was this the favorite all along for the boss and everybody else over there?”
Kiffin: “Yeah, we weren’t doing anything. The only thing we were doing was if Darren was gone we had a couple things pretty much in place to go back, to move down and pick up more picks because we didn’t have very many picks. But if Darren was there we were going with Darren. He’s a fabulous player and really gives us an added dimension to our offense and so we’ve got to look at a number of different ways to use him.”
Host, Tim Ryan: “Talk about some of those dimensions. Historically, I think the fans immediately start thinking of LenDale White and Reggie Bush from the USC days. Any of that type of stuff, pony backfield or whatever it is? Talk about what some of those possible roles may be for Darren McFadden.”
Kiffin: “There are a lot of things to looks at. One would be him back there with another one of our tailbacks. Another would be him outside the formation as a receiver. We did some of that with Reggie. But the thing we don’t want to do, and we kind of made that mistake with Reggie - and I think that Sean [Payton] would probably tell you they maybe did their first year with him, too - is with a guy like this there are so many things you get excited about but you don’t want to take away from what he’s there to do and that is to run the football and be back there in the I-formation. So we’ll look at a number of things but we do not want to hinder his progress as a true running back.”
On new WRs Drew Carter and Javon Walker:
Kiffin: “Drew Carter is just a fabulous worker in the way he goes about it and the way he’s in there watching tape and working. So we’re real excited about him. Gives us a big target, a 6′4″ guy. And then Javon is so explosive. We think that he’s going to be the best he’s been in years as far as health-wise and I know he’s excited about this upcoming season and to prove a lot of people wrong in his mind. So we think we’ve got him in a pretty good place right now.”
On 4th round draft pick Tyvon Branch:
Kiffin: “He’s going to be a safety for us and we hope he’s going to be a fabulous special teams player. He’s got all the tools to do that and he’s done that as he was younger and then also a kick returner, too. So we may look to put him back there as well so there are a lot of roles he can help us with.”
On the defensive line:
Tim Ryan: “Not taking Dorsey, how do you feel about your defensive line? Terdell Sands, Gerard Warren, how comfortable are you, Lane, and I guess you must be, that those guys are going to show up and be real consistent for you on the inside?”
Kiffin: “Yeah, they’re both here working out now. We’re going to need them to step up and play really well and play consistent along with Tommy Kelly. Those are three guys that have done some really good things at times for us. Now we need them to play more consistent and hopefully they can be dominant for us inside.”
On the running backs corps:
Pat Kirwan: “Most team would keep three running backs, barring injury. Some might keep a fourth but most don’t. Michael Bush must be really ready to go in every way for you to cut Dominic Rhodes.”
Kiffin: “Yeah, he really is. And it was a timing issue that helped Dominic as well. We really wanted to make sure that we did the right thing with Dominic. He didn’t get much chance to play last year. When he did, we started him two games, both games he went over a hundred yards and played really well for us. The way I look at it, to keep Dominic around just as an insurance policy really wasn’t fair to him after the way he played for us and also what he had done with his contract this off-season.”
Tim Ryan: “Do you feel like, as the head coach of that football team, in that building, in that organization up there in Alameda, do you guys all feel like you’re all on the same page, headed for the same thing?”
Kiffin: “Yeah, we’re headed for the same thing. We’re trying to win. Everybody here wants to win and so we’re doing our best to get that done.”
Pat Kirwan: “What’s the number one thing you feel like, going into your second year, you learned from your first-year experience?”
Kiffin: “Well, I think that you want everything to be so perfect right away, your off-season workouts and everything and a guy being in shape, a guy coming in a little bit out of shape. And as much as that doesn’t mean you still don’t stay on everything and look at everything, these guys, their bodies are a little different than college. They know their bodies well. Last year I got discouraged at this time of year when off-season program started because a lot of guys hadn’t done anything from the last game of the year. Well, in college that doesn’t happen. They’re working out the next week. As opposed to getting down on it right away and worrying about your team and your players and stuff you give them more time to get back into shape before you completely evaluate them.”

They should give McFadden his jersey with the number sewn-on backwards…
…so when he looks in the mirror, it reminds him that he’s only 20-years-old, and he needs to stay away from the bars.

Does anybody sense a change in tone with Kiffin when he talks to the media now as opposed to last year?
Does anybody sense a change in media availability of Raider personnel as opposed to last year?
May 1st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Theres definitely more access to personnel this year it seams… I like it… I’m so looking forward to training camp…and the “stories” from there
May 1st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Russell, Miller, Walker, Carter, McFadden, Bush, O’Neal …its hard not to get excited about the upcoming season.
One more thing I’ve always wanted to mention but keep forgetting: The team may have only moved from #32 to #25 statistically in Total Offense; but trust me man they made really significant progress. The ‘06 team was much worse than a 32nd ranking if you could imagine what I’m talking about. With the additions that were made this offseason along with a stable QB (hopefully no injury) I can definitely see this offense moving up another 10 spots by season’s end - that’s if the Oline holds.
May 1st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Add to that … Hall.. Nnamdi… Gibril…
May 1st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I think so too Tonio, there seems to have been a change in Raider SOP’s re:media.
May 1st, 2008 at 5:02 pm
I think Sapp said it right when he said Al’s pushing for one last hurrah… while he’s around to see it… it’s showing in many ways… … he’s always ‘tried’ to do right by the team… getting whomever he can that he felt would help him “now” … but this year (and last’s experimental year) seems to be a push for sustained strength…as well as getting over the hump now…
May 1st, 2008 at 5:04 pm
I’m thinking Al Davis has indeed heard some of his critics, like me.
May 1st, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Here you go OakGlenn, just like I told you he was drafted to play safety not CB.
On 4th round draft pick Tyvon Branch:
Kiffin: “He’s going to be a safety for us and we hope he’s going to be a fabulous special teams player.
May 1st, 2008 at 5:14 pm
lol KK… yeah… I’m sure he’s heard ya
Branch… … I’m thinking he’s gonna be good in a year or so… nickel back/safety
May 1st, 2008 at 5:19 pm
OakGlenn,
Who is stupid ? Who is the dumbest person in here?
Now that Kiffin has said “he will play safety for us” seems like its you that is stupid.

What is wrong with you brown????????? Are you just plain stupid??? You are the dumbest person in here. Look at what Ryan says. He’s never even seen Branch. Branch plays both. They’ll find a spot for him I’m sure. God damn you are dumb
May 1st, 2008 at 5:21 pm
I think what you see in Kiffin is a young man who became a grown man over the past year. like any first time coach he went through growing pains, made dumb mistakes, found out that he still has a higher authority to answer to. He probably tried to pull the trigger too quick with the firing Rob Ryan thing and learned that before any coach makes a major personel move that you still gotta check with the boss. the media turned it into a drama movie, but I think him not talking for a minute even though we wanted to hear a response sooner was the best thing for him to do because you know the media will take your words and twist’em around to make it a hot story. Lesson learned. He’ll be that much better this year because they (media) tried to kill him but failed, and for that he’ll only be stronger. Get those Keep Kiffin shirts made. YA KNOW?!
May 1st, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Here’s your growth shown Rick: “Kiffin: “Well, I think that you want everything to be so perfect right away, your off-season workouts and everything and a guy being in shape, a guy coming in a little bit out of shape.
He’s learned … and learning still… we’re lucky for it
May 1st, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Last year, he wouldn’t even tell the fans/media who the QB was going to be on a Friday afternoon.
May 1st, 2008 at 5:35 pm
He said McFadden will be a RB first and a general offensive threat later, that quote straight from kiffin just makes john clayton look stupid, which, considering his already Al Davis bobble-head-like appearance, doesn’t take very much, the same usually goes for BSPN in general………….

MR,,
Im not in denial at all. PEACE!
…..
Peace be unto you to, brother.
Now, to address your points:
Kiffin still being here does nothing to refute the stories by the press. The press reported he was drafted a resignation letter, and refused to sign. That’s it. Almost everything that has happened since indicates the likeliness of this report.
-Kiffin’s silence throughout most of the FA period.
-The Raiders signing malcontents like Hall and Walker, despite Kiffin being a believer in team chemistry.
-The Raiders drafting McFadden, despite Kiffin’s hinting that he didn’t want him.
-Rhodes’ comments to the press two days ago.
-Davis looking to hire a new cap specialist, a job presently held by Mark Jackson, a Kiffin guy.
Frankly, Hunter, I don’t see any indications that Kiffin is on board here. All of the moves we’re making are Al Davis moves, and anti Kiffin moves.
Kiffin is not here to be a puppet. He has made that clear from day one. He is not Norv Turner. He is not Art Shell. Yet at this point, judging by the moves the Raiders are making, he has even less control than they do. I don’t care what coaches he was allowed to hire. The results are all that count.
As far as optimism goes…I don’t believe it’s any more relevant that pessimism. It’s what’s realistic that matters. I don’t deal in emotion. I deal in reality.

True indeed Tonio;
One thing about sports is that you never stop learning because the game is forever evolving. So yes he will continue to learn. I think the best thing he’s learned is how not to fall into the trap of the bloodsucking media. Yeah there’s still some issues to irom out in Oakland but you know the saying in sports; Winning cures everything. So once we start winning again everything will be all hugs and kisses, and I think the moves made this offseason gives him the best chance to prove all doubters wrong. YA KNOW?!

MaddenRaider weren’t going to quit coming to this website? The fact that you’re gonna buy a Chiefs’ jersey tells us all about you.

I said I’d check in on occasion. I never said how often. Why are you so bothered by it? Even naming yourself after me…wow. I’m flattered. Why can’t you just skip my post and go on to the next? Could it be because I’m right, and you feel you have to downplay my statements as damage control? If so, you poor thing….
And, I’m buying a Dorsey jersey and tearing off the chiefs emblem. It’s a protest move. I’m a Raider fan, as long as the team’s in Oakland. Come to terms with it.

The Media is not what stands in the way of the Raiders winning, everyone has to deal with the media. As far as I know the media does not run the Raiders’s franchise.

Adding to how bad our offense was in 2006, just compare the Raiders with the Browns at #31 that year and you can see how bad it was.
