Spires prepares move West
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, May 12th, 2008 at 3:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.
No announcement yet from the Raiders, but defensive end Greg Spires told the News-Press of Fort Myers, Fla., he has signed with the Raiders and is making arrangements to move his family to California.
Spires, most recently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, wore a silver and black uniform in high school at Mariner High School.
Spires will participate in the Raiders’ organized team activity which begins Tuesday and runs through Thursday.
A 10-year veteran, Spires was in New England for three seasons when Rob Ryan was there as linebackers coach, and played seven seasons for Tampa with Monte Kiffin as his defensive coordinator.
“I want to go out on my terms,” Spires told the News-Press. “Oh yeah, I’m hungry.”
Spires told the News-Press, “They’ve tweaked the defense a little bit. That’s why I’m here.”
The Spires signing, presumably a one-year deal at or near the veteran minimum, is similar to one the Raiders made last week in bringing in Edgerton Hartwell. If it pans out, they’ve got a productive role player at a minimum price. If not, they’ll be like last year’s signing of Donovin Darius and fail to make the 53-man roster.
Spires will compete as a rush end. He has 39.5 career sacks with a high of eight in 2004 _ the same amount Raiders co-leaders Derrick Burgess and Chris Clemons had last season. Clemons left in free agency, signing with the Philadelphia Eagles.

What the hell does “tweaked the defense” mean?
May 12th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Good to hear.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
1st - Silver and Black for life!
May 12th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Jerry why was this guy available so long before we scooped him up ?
“They tweaked the defense so Im here”
“Oh yeah, I’m hungry.”
I like this guy!

May 12th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Assassin, has to be 3/4 defense.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
any tweak to our defense can only be a good thing.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
“…Spires was a member of the Superbowl Team and has been a rock over the years, but he hasn’t been healthy and wants (or believes) to start, so the Bucs had to cut the ties…”
St. Pete Times
May 12th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Now you’re gettin’ me excited Mista! If we come out in a 3:4 I will take back everything I’ve ever said about Al and RR. This would lend hope as it would indicate they haven’t lost their marbles over there in Alameda.
Unfortunately, I think he is referring to the addition of talent (i.e. Hall and Wilson) and feels like the Raiders are putting together a good defense that he want’s to be a part of.
I sure hope your assumption is right and I’m wrong.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Wtf
May 12th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
You bet BBB.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Spires is gonna have to beat out Trevor Scott for a roster spot first.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Bringing in talent isnt a “tweak” every off season teams upgrade talent.
Its only a tweak so we wouldnt use 3/4 exclusively just a change of pace..
We’ll see, Jerry know anything about a 3/4 ???
May 12th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
At 6′1″ / 265 lbs he can only be situational, so I hope his intentions are not to start because he’s not taking Burgess’ spot and he’s too small for us to pair him with another 265 lb DE. It’ll be nice to have a plethra of pass rushing DE’s to compete. Edwards, Spires, Scott, Gunheim…I’m sure one of these guys can win a job. I’m all for competition. We need to do more of it and it looks like we have at all positions with the exception of backup QB.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Quag, maybe its Richardson that needs to beat out Trevor Scott? Doesnt Kalimba play right end too ? We have alot of bodies going into camp.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
LOW risk HIGH reward
May 12th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I don’t think Richardson has much competition. I suspect he’s slotted for the base end and everyone else is competing for the situational pass rushing role.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Mista, I was being sarcastic about Scott….lol.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Richardson didnt impress me at all last year.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Tweaked - Are they going to try tackling guys this year? Any tweaking is good.
Takeo Spikes only makes sense if we go to a 3-4 to play inside next to Morrison. He’s not OLB material.
The Raiders signed Morant from the rookie camp. What about all the other studs and freaks and steals?
May 12th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
the guy they just signed; Tranell Morant is a DE/DT hybrid, maybe he will compete with Richardson. Besides the two of them, we have nothing but pass-rushing DE’s.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
COW, and duds…
May 12th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
3-4? Spires played in the Tampa 2. Why would we bring him in to run the 3-4? Why would we sign Tommy Kelly to a billion dollar contract to run a 3-4? I think they plan on running more stunts and twists like they did in the Colts game.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
spires,richardson,scott…donzo.. boy a friggin 3-4 sounds perfect with kelly to DE
May 12th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
LOL Yes, during the last few days it sounded like every guy in camp was going to the pro bowl on here….now ugly reality sets in. Hate when that happens. Scrubs beating scrubs and the guy nobody mentioned (Morant) gets signed. Too funny.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Are people still talking about signing Chris Henry? You do understand that as soon as this guy gets nailed for assault on his pending case the NFL is going to ban him for at least 1 year? So why sign him? Why waste a roster spot on a guy that will be gone at some point just prior to or during the season?
Or do you guys really buy into that innocent until proven guilty line of crap society throws at you? lol.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
was the wolverine package in a 4-3 or 3-4?
May 12th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Dakota, nobody mentioned Henry till you hit the keyboard, thanks!
May 12th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Post 19 comment,
The Raiders signed Morant from the rookie camp. What about all the other studs and freaks and steals?
ROFLMFAO.
COW= the voice of reason, that was funny as all hell coach. anyway how are you?
May 12th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Upper Case - We aren’t running a 3-4. I started pimping the idea the day Sapp retired. Tweaking could be anything. Maybe they’re going to blitz once a game instead of every two games…who knows?
Spikes isn’t a good fit period because at his current age etc he is inside LB material.
Only an idiot would move Morrison outside and stunt his growth at MLB to give Spikes one more season.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
OakGlenn, here is your rookie_only_mini_camp SUPERSTAR!
Drum roll…….
Tranell Morant
May 12th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Mista,
I guess you must have just shown up, because people were talking about Chris Henry on the last thread, just a few minutes ago. Thanks to you too.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
3-4? Lol. Did we sign a bunch of quality LBs and a NT that I don’t know about or something? 3-4! LMFAO.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Doing good Thec. Getting a good laugh outta the blog of late.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Did the dischargers sign newberry? Hardwick will be out another 4 months with his surgery.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Thec,
I don’t think they signed him yet.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
A tweak could mean anything when you’re talking about RR’s vanilla D so who the hell knows what the tweak is!
May 12th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
COW, I have been wanting the raiders to sign spikes, what you say about him makes sense not a fit for our system.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Chris Henry, Takeo Spikes, shoot can we drag Joe Theisman outta retirement and end his broadcasting career please?
This is a young building team. Throwing tired old castoffs into take reps away from our young guys is not good.
Sign that Ranklin what’s his face RB from rookie camp before wasting time on Henry. What purpose does benchwarming Henry serve? Not like he’s going to develop…
May 12th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Maybe Scott and Burgess can play LB in our new 3-4 defense??? LMFAO! Turd will be the blocker eating NT we would need right? HAHAHAHAHAHA
Maybe we should play the run and shoot offense too!
May 12th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Tweaked, does that mean 3-4? Can someone explain this to me, do we have the personel to run a 3-4 base?
May 12th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Thec,
People talking 3-4 are nutzo…we have the personnel to run a 4-3, not a 3-4. We do not have the depth at LB nor the all important run-stuffing NT to play a 3-4, it would be a disaster like in 04 or 05 (whichever year it was that RR tried the 3-4)…not quite as bad of a disaster, but close to it.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Sapp said we have 3/4 players.
Rob Ryan doesn’t care about players playing out of position.
Athing is possible, just stay tuned!
May 12th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Thanks for the updates Jerry. As a Brit following the Raiders I need a daily fix of news and notes to keep my sanity until august/sept.
I like the moves we have made so far this offseason and only pray that we can maybe unearth a gem or two from these FA at camp.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
NO! Dakota is right Thec. We have not the people for the 3-4. If we had decided early in the offseason to switch we could have gone after the people.
This guys a tweener. Maybe they stand him up to rush from LB sometimes? Tweak could just mean, “We’re moving Kelly to play 3 gap and haven’t decided who’ll play DE yet. You want a shot?”
May 12th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Cow, what you say does make sense. We have gotten young really fast we only have 7 players over 30 that have signed. Makes sense to develop in house.
Coach thats why you are the voice of reason.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Of course Mista is right, that doesn’t mean they won’t try it. If Kelly is the next Sapp, they could put him at DE and have the same disaster they had when RR tried to put Sapp at DE and run 3-4.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
COW, I am not tall enough to play DE, only 6′1″. don’t have the weight either only 250lbs. I dont run a 4.5 forty either.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Post 40 was more of a rhetorical question. All roads have allways pointed to a 4-3 base.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
hey Thec, long time no see, man.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Guys, really, if they were going to go 3-4 with Burgess and Kelly at DE they wouldn’t be signing so many DE’s. They’d be signing more LB’s.
All that’s happened is they know the D-Line stinks and they are throwing a bazillion guys at the problem hoping one pays off.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Damn Thec you can play LB.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
If we were going 3-4 it would have made sense to get a run stuffing DT, either in draft or FA.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Thec you can play for the Raiders - You’re a Freak! Just put on a black practice jersey and step one toe on the training grounds and the bloggers will grant you the coveted “freak” status!
May 12th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
O, what up brotha????? I have not been posting just reading. We have a lot of NATION members who give great insight. Coach on wheels is one of them. He has coached I beleive on an NFL level though he wont admit it.
How you been O? I am at work talking NATION.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
i have to agree with COW, we may used it in some downs, but not always.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
COE, Post 53 ROFLMAO…. thats some funny S#!T, you are going to get me fired….LMAO.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
i been good man, this weather man, its been bad lately.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Thec did you play college football?
May 12th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Tweak= Tackle the guy with the ball.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Right as rain Raider O. Actually, the Nickel and Dime packages are technically 3-4 packages with LB’s replaced by DB’s. On obvious passing downs we’ll see Burgess - Warren or Kelly - (Pass rusher TBD)
May 12th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
No, I picked up weightliting after high school.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
hey Thec you go to sprots bars to watch the raiders?
May 12th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
No, I like watch in the privacy of my own home.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Dude, you would have been a monster LB.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Amen 909.
Well, gotta go for a bit b4 Thec gets canned. Cya later Raider fans.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
LTR COW be good
May 12th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
The “tweak” being referred to is RR’s haircut.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Coach…. take care.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
maybe the tweak will be more of that wacky 5-2 defense that Rob ran a few times last year. That is the only time that Sands was effective last year. That might explain all the pass-rushing DE’s that they are bringing in.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
me and my friends go to a bar in La jolla village dr, next to a ralphs, i forgot the name.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Out here in the beautiful “Inland Impire”. Tweak is not a good thing.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
they used to do the chargers post game report from there.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
it’s good to load up at the DE position….
May 12th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
ya dark but he is 34, can he still play?
May 12th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
and, he only gets about 4 sacks a year average.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
in 6 years he hs 26 sacks.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
As the old saying goes: “Keep throwin cr@p at the wall until some sticks”.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
i say give the rookies a chance.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
well i hope this one doesnt stick.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
we have Scott, morant, gun..,and others lets develop the rookies.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Kiff is bringing in some vets, to help show the kids in camp, how to go about being a “pro”.
And to add competition in camp. Kiff is big on that.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
we could use all the DE as OLB in the 3/4
May 12th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Posted by ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson
The Raiders reportedly are bringing defensive end Greg Spires on board. This is a move to upgrade their defensive end position and replace Chris Clemons, who signed with Philadelphia as a free agent.
It would be asking a lot of Spires to take over for Clemons, who led the team in sacks last season. Spires had two sacks for a well-coached defense in Tampa Bay last season and his career is winding down. Spires has been on the open market for nearly three months and he didn’t get much attention. No offense to Spires, but this move smacks of desperation.
Another piece bashing the Raiders from this guy. He acts like we signed this guy to save our D. Guess what his background is:
Bill Williamson joined ESPN.com in 2008 after four seasons covering the Denver Broncos for the Denver Post.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
we still need that massive DT
May 12th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
What is BSPN’s fascination with ex-bronqueers?
May 12th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Tweaking the defense = Getting rid of Sapp.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Figures, Trotter was a hack in San Diego for years also. BSPN is loaded w/ haters.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
With the addition of Hall and Wilson there could be a lot more blitz packages.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Eldirty, rodney bailey and ethan kelley are still out there.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Winning will smash the mediots being content with bashing the NATION.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Bill Williamson is a bum.
Spires is legit when healthy. Bottom line, we have an arsenal of d-linemen to choose from. My Projected starters are Burgess, Kelly, Sands, Spires.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
they are both well over 320.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
I like the Blitz idea. Lets blitz at least once a seires. That would be easiest way to paremedic a QB.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
“909raiderlifer Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Kiff is bringing in some vets, to help show the kids in camp, how to go about being a “pro”.
And to add competition in camp. Kiff is big on that.”
EXACTLY! The only thing missing last year, was DRIVE! With more DESIRE and stronger work ETHIC, we WILL play an entire football game from start to finish! Nobody should be tired this year. this is football, so bring on mroe competition! PLAYOFFS baby!! I refuse to have the same mind set as last year, and the year before…oh, and the year before that too…i think you get the picture! If we can have a black man and a woman run for president of the united states. The Raider nation can have REAL OPTIMISM as well!! GO NATION! Only LA Raider fans have this pesimistic crap in their heads…hence the LAKERS! hahaha, GO JAZZ on that note! YEAH I SAID IT!
May 12th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Spires is a bum, he averages 4 sacks a year as a starter on a good deffense, he is a bum.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Linebackers are:
Howard, Morrison, Hartwell
May 12th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Maybe the “tweaks” are, RR is lifting a page or two from his Dad’s playbook.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
At all cost this year we must smash rivers head into the ground. “If” he gets up he sohud be carried off on a stretcher….
We should paramedic him first play from scrimage send all 11. F it if they score a TD i am okay with it.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
that’s what I’m to talking about O!
May 12th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
we can have competition between our rookies or other Fas we pick up, but not a 34yo bum.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Secondary:
Hall,Wilson, Huff, Asomougha
May 12th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

May 12th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

May 12th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

May 12th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

I live in SD I can’t stand rivers. ever since I saw him jawing at Sapp. he’s a punk!
May 12th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
POST 104, ROFLMFAO……. That penalty would be well worth it. byt the way is that a 15 yard penalty? Also is it taken from the point of the infraction?
May 12th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
El, O, and I both live in the area. I love it when i see a member of the NATION down here. If I see you flying our colors i will walk up to you and start a conversation. Its the NATION way. we can talk NATION all day….
May 12th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Dude, no one likes the mouth from the south, that is all he does is talk, he gets under my skin, you dont hate him thats fine, I DO.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
That would be POINTS of infraction do to the multiple, hits and personal fouls. But worth every one.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Maybe by singing D Hall, thew will be able to attack the box more on D. Tweaked!
May 12th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

May 12th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
ok …
I think we’re almost done. Maybe 1 more DT or LB.
May 12th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Then again, since we just picked up a DT outta rookie camp, maybe were just down to one more LB.
May 12th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
mildly surprised that Spieker got waived. I think I remember him getting talked up a bit after the draft, and for him to be waived already? Wonder what did it?

Here in Tahoe it’s mostly Whiner fans… Did find a good Raider bar and a sick Raider booster club in Carson City though… It’s a good thing because I won’t be able to make many games this year…

Michael Bush the Wild Card for the Raiders
Posted May 12th 2008 6:42AM by Michael David Smith
Filed under: Raiders, Oakland
If he hadn’t broken his leg in the first game of the 2006 college football season, Michael Bush might have been a first-round draft pick in 2007. Instead the Raiders got him in the fourth round, and he spent that entire year rehabbing from the injury.
Now he’s healthy (the photo was taken at the Raiders’ minicamp on Friday, when Bush ran at full speed), but can he get on the field with Darren McFadden now the main man in Oakland? He tells the Sacramento Bee what he thought when McFadden was drafted:
“At first I was like, Why do we need another back?, because, at the time, we did have Dominic, and LaMont still on the roster, and (Justin) Fargas and me,” Bush said. ” … It kind of bothered me, but it didn’t because he can help us. … I’m glad that he’s on our side.”
McFadden says he was watching the Louisville game when Bush broke his leg, and he seems to think highly of Bush. When you draft a running back with the fourth overall pick, you’re planning to hand him the starting job, but I like the options the Raiders have with having McFadden and the 245-pound Bush as a 1-2 punch. If Bush is as good a player as people thought he was two years ago, the Raiders have two of the NFL’s most talented young runners.

Efen, post 94:
You’re a joke. Better to keep you’re yapper shut when you’re comparing the Jazz to the Lakers. Ask all NBA players, who is the one teams you would prefer to play on.
Lakers by a big margin. One of the top franchises, followed by the Celtics. The Jazz, they have never won an NBA title and probably never will.
Ya, the Jazz are tough at home and it may take us 7 games to rap it up. But it’s the moving forward to the next round that matters. All the yapping, it may make you feel good but it’s not going to change the results.
Back to Raiders football. I’d like to say that the Inland Empire has thousands of Raiders fans. You see them all over. We have a Raiders Image in the Ontario Mall that’s does huge sales in Raiders gear. We
also have another Raiders Image in the Mall at Moreno Valley. Ya, we don’t live in Oakland, but we’re still part of the Raider Nation and we’re proud of it. Go Raiders.
May 12th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
its so nice to see the raider fans talking about the raiders in a good way again -
Bush and Mcfadden are going to be awesome- and they both can catch, as can Miller!!!! If Cable gets the O Line just a bit better every game- we will be a solid offense half way into the season - with th etall speedy recievers clearing out the middle - it should open up the backs and TE for 15 yarders routinely
May 12th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
get rid of Burgess what the hell are you talking about! what kind of rocks are you smokin’
May 12th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

The guy was out of the NFL at one point. So what if he came in and had a bunch of sacks…the guy got lucky and the Raiders knew he was not a keeper, not the real deal, so they let the Eagles over pay him and we are not looking back. I bet the guy does not have 4 sacks next year. FLASH IN THE PAN TWEENER…that sucked against the run…no loss, quit crying about his departure.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Saint, Exla
Should I be worried about our Lakers? The refs are letting Utah play physical and we do not seem tough enough to match their intensity. We need Bynum in the middle…but I have a bad feeling about his long-term prognosis. The knife is in his future, and Kobe’s too, so even next year could be troublesome.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Dakota, the Lakers recent slide has you a little testy ?
May 12th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
you think spires will be a starter?
May 12th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
J Money, I guess you’ll have to wait for pre-season and find out like the rest of us!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

173- LOL
Sorry J Money but pre-season football is where the depth chart gets decided!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
J Money,
I think Spires will be a situational pass rusher…you know, on obvious passing downs, like 3rd and 7 etc…so knowing Rob Ryan’s defense, Spires should get about 17 plays next year lol.
AL THERE IS STILL TIME; FIRE ROB RYAN!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Green Bay just released wide receiver Koren Robinson, we have to get him, it’s either he’s in silver and black or a chief! I hate to see a guy in a divisional opponent uniform when he could’ve been in ours!!!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Let the Queefsd sign the drunk. They can have Chris Henry too.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

did anyone read my comment on Koren Robinson? He’s there for the taking!!!! The KC Cheats can’t have him!!!!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
This is what im seeing….
if its a 3/4 D he will make the roster and possibly start opposite side of Derrick Burgess and we will only need 3 DT’s
if its a 4/3 D he will make the roster aside Trevor Scott,Derrick Burgess,Jay Richardson and Kalimba Edwards.
I think he’ll make it either way so that way all of them veterans:DB,KE and GS,will help rookie Trevor Scott understand the position better and help him blossom better also! remember Trevor only has 2 years of experience under his belt as a DE!!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
i hate kickers.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Im going to join in on the speculation..
I think our running game will be so good we can release all our WR’s and reimburse the season ticket holders 50% from all that cash we save.
And free parking.

May 12th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
we signed UFAs gray, gunhiem, morant, and drafted scott, we have veterans in KE,DB, e dont need a 34yo bum that averages 4 sacks a season.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Greg Spires is not a pass-rusher, he´s been a starter at LE on a usually stout TB defense over the last 5 seasons because he could usually hold his own vs the run, he´s been a decent two-way player but getting to the QB is not his thing.
Spires will give you 100% all the time and Gruden called him the most physical player on the team, so despite not being very big he managed to make up for it.
Point is, Kalimba Edwards is the one brought to fill the pass-rushing role as DE, not Spires.
If Spires makes the team, he´ll likely back up Burgess at LE and should see some playing time as he´s a better run defender than Burgess.
Last year in TB Spires played alongside Kevin Carter, Gaines Adams and Greg White in a 4 man rotation at DE, could be the same here with Burgess, Richardson, Edwards and Spires, if he makes it.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
4 sacks as a starter is not good.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
This hurts me to say, but Dakota is right. He is also right about Henry, and that hurts me to say too. He is right about PacMan, also hurts.
Are we in agreement on C Johnson, let him slide.

May 12th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
He did start in TB last season, but that won´t be the case here, I assume.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
spires is an old bum, he needs to go get his last pay somewhere else.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Don Nelson is a shite coach with an ego that is going to break up the Warriors if he does not place himself in check…you know I am right.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
So Marley is that the big “tweak” Burgess comes out on running plays ?
Wow Ryan is just a mad scientist these days! That new haircut has him thinking beyond himself. Whats next blitzing on 3rd and 9 ?
May 12th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
i’m sure one of the rookies we have can do the same for us in rotation. morant is big and strong.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
After 12 or 13 years of no playoffs its hard for me to bash Nelson.
Having said that, Id like to put out a cigar out in his ear from time 2 time.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
RR is the worst DC from the Ryan family.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Speak of the Devil, espn is reporting that negotiations between the Warriors and Davis have stalled…I bet he wants Nelson to kiss his azz for a while before he re-signs with them.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Buddy Ryan called the fridge a waste of a draft pick after they drafted him so evaluating talent does not run in the jeans of the Ryans!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Baron is under contract next year he can walk after that. Whos going to give him a new deal with larger money?
1 more year is all we need from him unless he shaves that beard, then we should pay him.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
you would think he learned from his father how to blitz, and then you think he’ll learn from Rex and use Huff the same as Rex uses ED, but no he has to do his own thing. Hey Rob has it been working man?????

May 12th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Sorry Mista, but he can opt out of the last year of his contract as of July 1…sometimes walking away from a bad situation (Nelson) is more important than money…not usually, but sometimes.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
If thats the case we should probably pay him but Im glad Im not the GM on this one..
You know if he gets a huge deal he will probably get hurt.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Mista…204
I think that by “tweaked” Spires was referring to the player movement on defense. I don´t see what else could he mean, I guess we´ll find out in training camp but I wouldn´t get my hopes up.

Greg Spires.
Reminds me of Major League II, when Roger Dorn tore off his suit with his uniform underneath and announced he was activating himself.
So, now that Greg Spires is a Raider, let me go back to 2003 and find my excitement…
Hey, there’s a reason to buy another seat, AI. Greg Spires. My god, when you come down from your months long alcohol and norco binge, it’s going to be a tough fire wood sell, buddy.

If Raiders play up to potential they could be at 20 by the end of the season.
If they play over their heads all year they could crack the top 15.
If they play like losers and don’t play 4 quarters they could be 28 or worse.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
so now these guys we have signed hartwell and spires that should fill in the graps that the raiders were missing
May 12th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
K Rock, if any team plays to their potential they can be at 20. Why don’t you just admit that we’re one of the worst teams in football, and have only made minor tweaks to change things? I’m not buying that any of you truly believe otherwise. You guys are confusing belief with ideology. You don’t believe the Raiders are better. You’re just saying that, to fall in line with the troops. Right?

You are completely wrong. The Raiders are stacked with young talent.
I watched the Cowboys go from 1-15 to the playoffs to the Super Bowl in the early 90s. They built a young team that took a few years to learn to win but was a great team for many years.
Raiders have that potential.
May 13th, 2008 at 12:56 am

You are a hater. You are not a Raiders fan. You only come on this board to stir up trouble and down the Raiders.
The fact is, no matter what the Raiders did or who they drafted, you would find fault with it because you are a hater.

Well I’m sure most kickers hate you too, but we got to admit, having a good kicker and even a good punter is equal to having a great O-lineman or a great D-lineman…
KC will lose even more in ‘08, now that they lost a good kicker… Special Teams is 1/3 of the team, more than ever, in modern football

K Rock, keep guzzling. Oakglenn Orange, or Tommy Trojan Tropical Punch? How about K Rock Kiwi?
Maybe tomorrow you can give me a laugh by comparing and contrasting our young “talent” with that around the league (I’m assuming you realize that we’ll be playing actual games, against other actual players…)
Any fan of any team can take the homer approach and pretend that their team’s younger players will blossom into pro bowlers. Only a few do. And it takes smart GM’s that understand today’s game to find those diamonds in the rough. Dysfunctional Al is not one of them.
Lane Kiffin is our only hope. And, it’s well known that he’s gone after this season.
Being a fan doesn’t mean being blind. I’m just being realistic. You say that no matter what we do, I’ll criticize. WHAT HAVE WE DONE IN THE PAST 5 YEARS?!?!?
Forgive me for using WINS AND LOSSES as a measuring stick…
The last winning season we had was 2002. Back then, I was at the San Jose Mecury board under the name “MatuzSAC”. If they’re available, you can dig up my posts from then and see that I was giving the team props, left and right. Heck, dude, I was on board in ‘03. It was when we hired Norv Turner when I saw the light. Up till that point, I was signed on to the theory that Gruden had sold us out. Norvell’s hiring was when I realized that Davis just ran Gruden out for a puppet. I’m still a fan, but I’m just keeping it real. Sometimes the truth hurts. But I promise you, my words won’t be nearly as painful as those losses this fall. Don’t kill the messenger.
May 13th, 2008 at 3:28 am

Henry pleaded innocent. If he is innocent then sign him for cheap. He has talent and we are in a position where we cant afford to hand pick the best behaved talent we need quality young players now. Hes only 24, is a real deep threat and would easily be our number 2 reciever and 1 in the future or when Walker gets injured which he will.

May 13th, 2008 at 5:57 am
Tranell Morant, Greg Spires, Hartwell.
Strong indication that our defense is still a bit thin and we may again have trouble stopping the run this year.
I have accepted the fact that McFadden will be a huge asset to Jamarcus and we have a tremendous foundation for a great offense. We will be a better team in 08 and I can see eight wins. We will score some points but the key to success will be Sands, Kelly and Warren.
If we still can not stop the run this season we need to build a foundation on the defensive line. That can be done drafting at the 15 to 20 spot in the 09 draft.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:58 am
Yeah lets sign Chris Henry, not only is he “innocent”, lol, he has monster stats…I mean he did have a career high 36 receptions once! Lets expose all our young players to guys like Henry, Jones, Robinson, ect ect ect…what could go wrong? I mean it certainly didn’t destroy the Bungholes did it…oh wait it did, but the Raiders are different right? The Raiders have a much more stable environment for our players so I am sure those troubled players would straighten up, besides, after they ruin all the young players on our team we could cut them…so no risk, duh.
Some of you guys are complete fools.

the key to the season is JaMarcus and Kiffin. Coach and QB.
Kiffin has to show he can get the most out of the roster and not lose players like he did last year with Rhodes. And not coming across as a grumpy ingrate would be a good thing too.
And the QB has to lead.

After spending most of 2007 on the sidelines, JaMarcus Russell will get his chance to lead the Raiders.
JaMarcus Russell is the wild card here. No one knows whether he’s ready to be a winning starter. Last season, Lane Kiffin wisely kept him on the sidelines until late December, giving him a chance to learn without failing. Now it’s time for him to prove himself.
—How many times have you heard critism of not starting JR before they did? I’ll bet even Clayton called the Raiders out for not getting him in there earlier.

Sports writers seem to write what ever to get people to read what ever trash they are spewing.

Exla, I hope you are right. Game 5, as always, must win! I am starting to worry about the long-term consequences of Kobe’s injuries and Bynum’s knee! Okay, I am losing it. One step at a time….win against the Jazz and worry about next year when September-October rolls around.

In case you don’t read Peter King every Monday at Si.com, here’s what he wrote about the Spires signing:
“ I think, of all the signings the Raiders made this offseason, the one that will be most worth the money is defensive end Greg Spires, who signed a one-year deal close to the NFL minimum Saturday. Spires, one of the five best players on the field in the Bucs’ Super Bowl win over Oakland five years ago (a sack, two pass deflections), will be in the rotation at end for the Raiders and should be able to be a five- or seven-sack guy playing 20 snaps a game.”
See, not all the press about the Raiders’ offseason has been negative.
And in more positive pub, ESPN’s John Clayton lists the Raiders as his No. 2 “surprise team” of 2008:
“They go from having a .516 strength of schedule to a projected .438, giving them optimism for a four-game improvement. The only team with a 2007 winning record that the Raiders will play in the first 12 games is the Chargers, in a Sept. 28 home game. Until December, they play a .395 strength of schedule. How can they not “Just win, baby”? They should have a winning record going into their final four games.”

The cowboys franchise has hardly been destroyed by signing players with bad reputations. It has made them a much better team. Henrys stats arent great because T.J and Chad are there and everyone knows the Bengals will pass. He would be great for the raiders.

It just said my commemt was awaiting moderation and then it slightly delayed its posting. I did not swear or post anything offensive. And they did not change it in any way.

Exla,
Yeah, they do that sometimes when you post a link to another site…mine usually never get through because they are non-football related most of the time, lol.
Eyen,
You are a Jazz fan? How is your family ranch doing in Texas? Say hi to your momma/aunt for me!
