Reece, Spires signed
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 at 4:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Wide receiver, Marcel Reece, who earned a Raiders helmet Sunday for his performance in the Raiders’ rookie minicamp, also earned a contract with the club.
Defensive end Greg Spires, who agreed to terms the weekend, also arrived in Alameda for the start of an organized team activity and signed a contract.
With the Raiders at the 80-man limit, cornerback Duane Starks and fullback Matt Hahn, an undrafted free agent from Penn State, were waived.
Starks was signed April 15.
The OTA runs through Thursday, with practice on the final day open to the media, which means the first look at quarterback JaMarcus Russell on the practice field in nearly a year. Russell is expected to be among the “97 to 98” percent of the roster Lane Kiffin expects to be practicing.

May 13th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
How much did Duane Starks earn for a month of work? I feel bad for that guy, we have been cutting him earlier and earlier every year.

Interesting Read.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
how big is Reece? some have him listed at 6′1 230, others 6′3 240, and 6′4 240.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Raider O…
you might be right, no kickers traded for picks, I just thought i recalled something like that, but good proven kickers in FA are very attractive
May 13th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
good article Thec.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Good to hear.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
SWEET…..Reese is going to play slot! Watch out!
May 13th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
O what up????? O i looks to me that you are addicted to this site Brotha!!!!!Its all good so am I……
May 13th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
hayesDaze…
stjernerud is in HOF yeah, but the 5 i mentioned are 10 times more worth a HOF spot
May 13th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Reece could be an exciting addition to this offense, 4.42 speed from a 230 pounder with soft hands is always good. His best fit might be as a fullback though, which is pretty deep on this team. I hope the Raiders can at least develop him on the practice squad a little bit. Might be the heir apparent to Justin Griffith some day.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I’ll take a wait and see approach how good the d will be this season but Ryan has some talent in the secondary thats a given.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Cool! one of our ships was just in the picture in a intro of CSI!!
May 13th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Raider O and HayesDaze…
what do you guys say to we put the kicker talk to rest now =) I mean the kickers are an important part of the game, but enough is enough =)
May 13th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
LMN, yes they are, I’m not saying kickers are not important, but when you draft one in the top 15 of the 1st round, you are looking for a probowler for many years, and Jano wasnt, not for lack of talent but off the field issues.I mean c’mon when all you have to do is kick, get paid as much as Jano has been getting, you have to make the kicks maybe not all, but better than what he was doing.that denver game got me angry, he made the kick and the next try misses, why?
May 13th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
you got it LMN.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
and Then there were 80!
Starks … man… is he looking for a scouting job with us or what?
May 13th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

May 13th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Thec did you know we have a raiders bar in SD?
May 13th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
How many people can be on the scout team?
May 13th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
O, I am addicted to this site, and football. Glad to know you live in the southland so we can hook up during the season!!!!
May 13th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
ohh let me just say this, if i could go back in time, regarding kickers…
I would go say to Al, “dont draft Jano”, and go further back and say “draft Morten Andersen, give the guy a 25 year contract, its worth it”
then i’m done with the kickers talk =)
May 13th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
No, I have been looking for one, but no such luck….
May 13th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
951…
i believe its 12 or 8 on the scout team
May 13th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Can anyone explain to me how we got the chargers playbook ala James Lofton? Why was Lofton dismissed? He had the receivers playing better IMHO.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
I thought it was 25 or something like that. That makes it harder to keep some of these guys that just get beat out around to help them develope.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
man me too, EL told me about it, it’s called Casa Picante in santee.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

May 13th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
he said a charger fan went there once and was chased out, i love it.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Thec,
That is a Norv move. He wants to bring in his guys. Now we can step back and watch the chokers crumble.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Thats nice nothing like a discharger fan to try and spoil a NATION gathering……idiot
May 13th, 2008 at 4:43 pm

May 13th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
If this magical paridise exsists in Santee, let me know and I’ll make the trip down from the north of Temecula and see you guys on Sunday’s!
May 13th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
That Rob Ryan article was funky. Exact same answers as two weeks ago with the “new” questions tweeked a little bit. Pretty lame.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:44 pm

May 13th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
El said he used to bartend there.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
It will be mandatory barring some unforseen issues that we meet in this “magical place” to become refreshed, and talk NATION, and watch NATION destroy the opposition.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
I lived in la mesa for a couple of years and never heard of it. That pisses me off. My roommate was a chefs fan. That would have been my home during football season.
May 13th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

May 13th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Raider O…
ahhhhhh that makes sense =)
my local soccer club has a support faction named (translated) “everybody hates us” =) because we are the most wining club (easy to hate - like the raiders)… but sadly the last few years, both raiders and brøndby have had same destinies…. but it looks bright for both two now =)
May 13th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
I missed the F =)
May 13th, 2008 at 5:04 pm

May 13th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Thec,
Lofton was dismissed in San Diego to give a job to former Charger and Hall of Famer Charlie Joiner, Joiner was a coach elsewhere and was let go there, when he became available most likely owners and management decided to bring in one of their own,
which is exactly what Al did when Lofton became available.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
I tried putting a link on here a couple of times and it keeps getting dropped.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
isnt reece?
May 13th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
The sqaws fired Joiner and then the sparks added back one of their fireflys.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Good Night Raider Nation!
May 13th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
If Lofton can work with the talent that the Raiders have on the roster the same way he did with the garbage on the chokers roster, they should come around.
Add him and a new Strength and conditioning coach and it looks promising.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:33 pm

May 13th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
what are we going to do about stu shweigert
May 13th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Raider O, post 17:
You’re talking about one of my pet peeves here. I feel exactly the same. A number one pick and Seabass has yet to come through, especially in a game winning situation. Plus his off the field problems. I for one would be happy to see him replaced by some rookie or just a consistent kicker up to the 50 yard range. Ya, Seabass has distance capabilities for up to 65 yards, but that has never won a game for us yet.
As I’ve said before on this site, we need someone in the stands, behind the end
zones waving a volka bottle back and forth when he’s about to kick. Give him a target that he likes…maybe he’ll make a few.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
So how much longer does Kiffin have in Oakland?
If he stays, we might win 8 games this season….with an emphasis on might.
The kid is lost, apparent by interviews recently. The coaching staff is under fire, all of them are talking to the media, which tells you one thing, they’re being set up….
Ha ha
May 13th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
We have a Super Bowl squad with a copy cat Head Coach who has no loyalty to the sport of football.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Sweigert is a stud, do you recall anyone scoring on long plays last season? A safeties job is to keep big plays from happening. The fact he was the guy making the tackles isn’t his fault, rather, it’s the coaching staff!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
T T T Today Jr……
May 13th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
I’m up for a giant cardboard or wood bottle shaped sign on the wall behind the goal post in each endzone. Think we can get it done?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
coach elkins what the hell are you talkin about it seems to me that kiffin may improvement to the team i dont know what you were watching but the raiders never had a running game before until last season the d-fence slipped a bit but i think the big o did ok for themselves
May 13th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
coach, step away from the crack pipe
May 13th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
They couldn’t have got any worse Bill. 4-12 on an improvement is like upgrading from Rasanna to Oprah as your wife….neither is exactly an improvement.
This is the Oakland Raiders. Super Bowl or bust. Kiffin will never even get us to the post season let alone the Super Bowl.
The guy lookslike he’s gonna piss his pants every time he does an interview….
Wake Up!
Amazing
May 13th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Crack Pipe, lol….hey nation, bait your hook again, your worm is on the ground…
May 13th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Kif saw the error in his ways last year, he should come in with a better game plan than someone playing “Madden” would use. I love the guts on 4th and short, but 4th and 5+ just shouldn’t happen in the NFL when your struggling. RR should be able to see what is going on now that the hair is under new ownership. And the new Strength and Conditioning coach will keep them going in the 4th this year.
All and all 9-7 or better. period.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
With fans who know so little about football, its easy to see why we’ve only won 19 games in 5 years!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
so coach how many times did they get to the QB this last season
May 13th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Who is they, the raiders?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
well coach i beat you know it all huh
May 13th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Wow coach, your so insightful. I didnt realize the fans were the ones on the field loosing the games? Thank you for pointing that out. I will have to remember that the next time I try to run the ball out 7 yards deep.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Not many….you’re getting warm…we rarely blitz (bring 5 men) and when we do, its never disguised, ever.
Our man to man coverage just sits there like a lame duck…
Rob Ryan cut his hair cause he knows he’s done too.
Knapp needs to go as well….
May 13th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
How many college assistants have made the jump from college to pro Head Coach and have been successful?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Nation, what do you want to know….cause I have any answer unless we’re talking about the women in your life!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Kool kell, where are you headed with your statement?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
If the coaching staff is soo bad, who would you replace them with?
I wouldn’t mind seeing Ryan go, he sucks as a DC. If the Raiders could get back to a top 10 rated D this year that is the only way I see him sticking around.
Kif is young and still learning the ropes, would rather have him calling the shots then Shell, Turner, etc. etc.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
And where the hell is Dakota anyways, he seems to be the man around here, when I’m outta the room that is!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Replace them with me!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
The NFL has created a huge problem for itself. The players make 10 times the amount the coaches make. The players know this, so why should they listen.
The players are right in their thinking. The coaches are all out for themselves, using devious tactics like Kiffin and Shanahan last season. All concerned with nothing but their jobs, not the welfare of the team./
Al Davis has to be setting Kiffin up…
May 13th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
It’s starting to sound a lot like MR talk around here!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
That is all you got? you are pathetic. try answering a question mr. insightful.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
Its like American politics inside the game.
The coaches all hire men who they know, all copy former coaches, never letting new innovative minds into the game.
The NFL is tired when it comes to coaching football, and they know it.
Younger coaches with new ideas is the future, if the NFL can create a fan base outside this country.
People are broke everywhere, our dollar is declining, and with that, will be a decline in attendance.
Look at baseball!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
If you could do better, get off welfare, get out and find a job, prove yourself, and then step up.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
You are someone who has to call someone pathetic, don’t try and label me, cause you only end up labeling yourself.
Now what was your question again?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
i’d rather watch tennis then baseball….both are boring. at least with tennis you get to see women in skirts with tight shirts.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
I have already been contacted by the Raiders.
I have already sent them a 400 page playbook, Al Davis has it as we speak.
And I don’t believe in welfare!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
I’m just saying the Coach is green as heck, young and probably intimidated by some (Culpepper, Moss). Probably more comfortable with young scrubs.
That QB media merrygoround last year was bush. Coaching is a people business, and I’ve read he’s got problems there.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
Now what was your question?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Coaching is mostly about taking responsibility.
If the team fails, its the coaches job to assume the blame. This only improves the confidence the team has in its coach. Kiffin took no such responsibility. Instead, tried to inquire about another job during the season and tried to get his DC fired. Some leadership!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
I wouldn’t even want you coaching Pee~Wee.
So which is it, insightful one……
Kiffin is pissing his pants or young innovative coaches are needed?
I can do with out your Economic Forecast…
So spare me that,
well, come to think of it,
I could do without anymore of your idiotic ramblings
as well…..
But…we’ll just go with this for now.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Are you all blind?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Kiffin is an NFL coaches son, who has had his mouth spoon fed his whole life.
Shanahans kid behind him….
The NFL is a joke!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
If Kif can’t handle the pressure Al won’t keep him around. But the coaching carosel has to freeking stop! Last years QB sideshow was a bit much. Going for it on 4th and long…..also bad calls. He has to step up this year or he will be gone by mid season. With the strenght of schedule the Raiders better be 3-1 no worse then 2-2 by the bye week. If not, I can see him getting canned. Unless they are very close losses.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
The Raiders shouldn’t lose a game, thats how much talent Mr. Davis has on the team this season…..
Still, its always a reflection of the Head Coach, and with Kiffin, there is no hope at all!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
For being a “coach” you sure yap about a Coaches responsibility plenty.
What of the Players & theirs?
What about CHEMISTRY? FAMILIARITY?
None of this matters, coach?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
He had 5 top draft picks on his team at USC and couldn’t beat Texas in college, a 4th down play where Reggie Bush was on the sideline…
Some gameplanner…
Their passing game is pathetic
Their run game’s success is due to Tom Cable and a host of good backs, even though we went against 8 man fronts all year.
We never run out of spread sets, always out of I.
THe Raiders are as predictible a team as there is in the league.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
People can bitch and moan about Kiffin, but he did a better job than Art Shell in his first year.
At least the raiders had some life in them. In the “Horror Show from sHell” year, they looked like the most pathetic NFL team in some time.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Chemistry is the job of the coach. The coach is the man who mirrors the men on the field. Everything he reacts to or ignore is noticed by the team. He is the General, the spokesperson, and the man who assumes blame.
This is his job.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
coach tell me something are you a raider fan doesnt sound like one
May 13th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
You are mad. Keep sucking up to “Mr. Davis” but his “Great off season” is questionable at best. Wilson is the only proven player that was signed. Period. The rest of the players have huge injury concerns or never lived up to their potential. The draft was subpar at best. A 4th round pick for a good servicable CB that was taken in the 1st. Great move. Almost as good as the 3rd rounder last year that didn’t make the team. Player personnel matters need a serious makeover.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Yes, he did a better job that Shell, that is true, but thats just changing the subject.
The subject should be how to get back to the Super Bowl.
Not, is our current coach better than a man who only won 2 games…
common, we’re smarter than that!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
I don’t mean to be too negative, but how can a 31 yr old with NO/EXP lead men on an NFL team to the playoffs?
We obviously need continuity in coaching, but Al should have hired a NFL guy, if one would take the job.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Last time I checked “coach” Kif didn’t have anything to do with the USC Defence giving up 200 rushing yards. Lets try again shall we?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I am not really a Raider Fan, I am an Al Davis fan.
He has keep old school values in the league and I want to help assist him in further attempts to keep the league honorable!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Again, you changed the subject….
May 13th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
the magic lost.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
ok coach could u make the raiders a much better team you think you could i dont think so i think kiffin did a great job and i believe we will go over 500
May 13th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Did Gruden have NFL/Playoff experiance before Al hired him? How about Madden? Flores was a player and did a pretty good job as a coach. Flawed logic guys.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
If we don’t win the Super Bowl all talk is simply an excuse, not a reason….
It’s all about number 1 in my book.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Coach Elkins Says:
May 13th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I am not really a Raider Fan, I am an Al Davis fan.
you in the wrong site, you need to go to i love men sites.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:47 pm

May 13th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Predictions of over .500
What a fan?
Why not spread positive thoughts, see something before it happpens, live a little…
May 13th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Kif will have a good season this year. The ramblings of some people on here crack me up. Which is quite painful at this moment in time.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Raider951 all those guys had NFL coaching exp.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Raider O that hurt. that was funny man.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Shall we discuss scheme…
You predictions are tiring me…ha ha
May 13th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Kiffin is going to get fired…
May 13th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Can anybody name a college assistant who jumped to the NFL head coaching job with no exp, and been successful????????????
May 13th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
How that for a prediction
May 13th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
coach i dont really hear anything positive coming from u if you are a raider fan
you think you can coach better than kiffin i dont think so
May 13th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
I’m not going anywhere….what did I say that was negative?
Regarding anything besides our current Head Coach
May 13th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
You hire a 31 yr old coach with absolutely no Head Coaching experience? What kind of logic is that?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Positive, alright, I’ll start with Justin Fargas.
He will be the starting TB this season. This man is a Raider through and through.
Russell, a great talent who just needs a bit of polishing…
May 13th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
KoolKell - No…but there are plenty of Head Coaches who had previous experience in the NFL or have been former NFL Head Coaches or who have been Hall of Fame Coaching that have come back and have sucked during their 2nd stint. Theres 32 teams with 32 Head Coaches who have been hired for one reason or another. If only 1 wins the Superbowl, is everyone else considered a failure as a coach? Who cares if Kiffin is a “no name” guy. We had Norv Turner, who had Superbowls as an offensive coordinator with the Cowboys who has never been a Head Coach. Its the luck of the draw.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
coach you type negative and i dont believe you are a positive person at all
May 13th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Reece only has to beat out 27 more freaks and he’s in!
BTW Jerry - Does the 80 man roster limit include unsigned draft picks or are we looking to cut 5 more guys before camp?
Practice squad is a final waiver activity. (Somebody asked)
May 13th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
This came from a google search.
Madden began coaching after an aborted career as a professional football player — he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, but never made the active roster because of an early knee injury. He had short stints coaching in California at Hancock Junior College (1960-64) and San Diego State (1964-66) before landing a job as an assistant with the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League in 1967
No pro experiance. I guess he didn’t deserve his shot either.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
see what is going on here that member the time Jimmy Johnson got his shot at being a coach from college and drafted QB and than RB the following year what happen to them
May 13th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Huff24, glad you’re here, can you answer the question?
Can anybody name a college assistant who jumped to the NFL head coaching job with no exp, and been successful????????????
May 13th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Well Bill, I’ll just have to try and change your mind one day at a time then.
I’m sorry I wasn’t more convincing.
You were the only guy who’s opinion I was trying to sway.
Ha ha!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
I wonder what kind of tweaks Rob Ryan is talking about? You have to wonder if Kiffin sat down with Rob and looked at film so he could point out what he would attack as an offensive minded person. Sit down and look at how easy it is to exploit Rob’s defense. Hopefully Kiffin did that and those are the tweaks.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Hey Huff, what kind of tweaks do you reccommend?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Coach Elkins Says:
May 13th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Regarding anything besides our current Head Coach
I am not really a Raider Fan, I am an Al Davis fan
how can it be our coach, if you are not a raiders fan.
you need to go drink some of our kool aide.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
How about a high school coach who jumped to the League with no experince and had success?
Ha ha
May 13th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
KoolKell - I don’t know of any but there are plenty of other coaches with NFL experience that have failed. You know what I mean?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
A coach has a job, and its not to befriend the players, therefore, labeling a coach as a fan would be counter productive.
Does this help explain….
May 13th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
how do u figure that out coach that u can change my mind
May 13th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Results, you’ll remember my name, trust me!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
I don’t think that analogy holds Huff.
There have been many horses who didn’t win the Kentucky Derby either, but a donkey never has.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
well someone tell coach apply for a head coaching job and see if he gets it
May 13th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
The difference between a donkey and a horse is the spelling.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
my moneys on the zebra!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Coach Elkins Says:
May 13th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
A coach has a job, and its not to befriend the players
ever heard the term A PLAYERS COACH
May 13th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Apply?, nahh, I just contacted Amy Trask instead, it was much quicker!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Coach - Well. Adding better players as we have, definately helps. I think our defense is very simple and I would want our defense to operate in a fashion similiar to the Eagles. I want bigger defensive lineman across the board with speed as an asset. I would blitz alot and move people around to confuse the offense with formation changes on a consistent basis.
Now…I really like the players we have but I don’t think we disguise what we do the same way the Eagles and Jags do. The thing I notice about our defense is that we rush 4 only too often while dropping our linebackers into coverage most of the time while playing Huff against the TE, playing man on the corners and playing 1 deep safety. If I can figure that out, anybody can.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Yes, I have Raider O. What’s your point?
May 13th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Too bad Bill Belicheat isn’t available. He would make a great coach. His moral values are just what this team needs.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
KoolKell - Well. What would you rather have? Who do you want as our Head Coach?
May 13th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Coach Elkins Says:
May 13th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
The difference between a donkey and a horse is the spelling
maybe they will start racing them instead of horses in the K Derby.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
well coach you got one thing right a donkey and a horse
May 13th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
What’s happenen Nation
May 13th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Kool it’s an irrelevant discussion. It’s like the morons who say no team has won a super bowl with a black qb they drafted. There’s always a first time. Kiffin will be judged on his merits just like JR. That’s what’s wonderful about sports.
Can anybody name a 6th rd qb to win multiple SB’s (before Brady)?
Kiffin is already better than Shell and Turner were AND he has room to grow.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Well…If you started racing nothing but Donkeys, I guarentee a Donkey would win.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Huff, I agree with everything you said with an exception of the Jags. Their Defense does not disguise anything at all. However, they do have a great front 4. They win with old school smashmouth mentality and a tough minded attention to detail. Jones Drew and a new up and coming QB doesn’t hurt either.
Back to Oakland, disguising your coverage and blitz package is vital to the NFL game, and we simply, like you said, lack that in the Raider scheme!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Kiffin is not a better coach than Norv Turner, Coach on Wheels, you are going to be ignored until I hear some truth!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
a players coach, is a guy that the players love and respect, he is also a friend to them, a person the players will go to war for.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Yes…Kiffin’s potential to grow, exceeds that of Turner and Shell. No question.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
And yes, we can do this all night….
This is more fun than I anticipated!
Anyone have something interesting to discuss…..
like X’s & O’s perhaps?
May 13th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
El, i was telling 951 and Thec about the nation bar.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Coach Elkins - Yeah…the Jaguars aren’t as elaborate as the Eagles but I do like how the Jags find HUGE and very fast players for their defense. We tend to find small and fast players and they get worn down quicker and eventually run over to the point that their speed is no longer an asset. If you lose your speed during the game, at least have the size to make up for it.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
you are the coach, you tell us.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
coach what makes you a better person
May 13th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
A big and slow Biekert got the job done better than a smaller and faster Morrison. I like Morrison but hes a guy who needs protection in front of him in order for him to be successful.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Kiffin has done a better job in Oakland than Turner did. Turner was a yes man who kept guys like Whitted around. Turner bounced Gallery all over the place. If Turner is a better coach he wasn’t a good fit in Oakland.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Good point. However, if a team is going to excel in the playoffs, like against the colts and Patriots, the main competition, a team must be built to beat those teams.
The Jags will not be able to outscore those two teams in the post season. They will make the playoffs, no doubt, but will fail because of an inability to score in games late in the season.
Big and strong, yes, but that doesn’t help when your team is spread out with 4 and 5 wr sets.
See my point.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
If he doesn’t win 9 games (a tall order) he’s probably fired.
I don’t know Huff. We need continuity there for sure. Somebody Al feels comfortable with philosophically, at least 40 yrs old with NFL exp, and support him for the next 5 years.
I think Coaching is a people business for an experienced adult. I’ve read Kiffin is not very good in that area. Has the ability to put people off without realizing it. That comes with exp, but will he get it?
May 13th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Coach Elkins - Why do you feel that Kiffin is not a better coach than Turner? I just want to know.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Kiffin did better than turner in Oakland, yes, I agree, but he isn’t a better coach!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
huff24 dont go there coach knows football like bo knows
May 13th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
I think Kiffin is a decent OC, but not a good Head Coach. I think Turner is a great OC, and only a decent Head Coach! So, I think they are both Coordinators, but not good in the job of Head Coach!
Understand!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
I called the Giants beating the Patriots for the haters…..
May 13th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
And the Raiders personnel departments knows it!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
We can do this all night!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Bring Belicheck in here, he’ll cry!
The only guy who I’ll bow to is Al Davis!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Norv Turner has a body of work to analyze, but I don’t think his record was ever as bad as it was in Oakland. The Oakland Raider Organization is a special case.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Where’s Dakota….? He is a football guy for sure…
And who is Huff, he is someone too!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
that was kiffins first year give him a break right now he has brought in some good talent for this up coming season
so coach if kiffin does another bad season i will agree with you but i seen something different in his shceme that will make the raiders a better team
May 13th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Huff24 Says:
May 13th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
A big and slow Biekert got the job done better than a smaller and faster Morrison.
Beikerts strength was in reading defenses. It took him awhile to learn how to do that. Remember that this is only Captain Kirks 4th season. Hopefully he improves at that skill this year.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Norv couldn’t deal with the heat in Oakland. You have to love Al Davis and appreciate the man to have success in Oakland. Most people just have to point their fingers at him cause he is just so dam smart. You have to let your ego go if you work for this man, cause if you don’t he’ll break you down mentally just to teach you what football is all about, and most people just really don’t know.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
KoolKell - Jon Gruden didn’t mesh philosophically with AD and was only 34 I believe when he was hired and he was around for 4 years.
Kiffin I believe meets AD on a philosophical level, moreso than Gruden. I think Kiffin and AD are alot alike and Kiffin wants to move and shake things around just like AD but AD still has the final say and Kiffin probably thought he could get away with things until AD had to stop him from getting out of control. There has never been a perfect set of players on this offense before that fits exactly what AD has always wanted and now we finally have it with what I believe to be a young AD at Head Coach.
Madden was also very young when he took over and they were successful for a good 10 year period while earning 1 Superbowl as you would know better than I but you can’t always look for a veteran coach because they’re stuck in their own ways and they are usually yes men who won’t be creative enough to make a big enough impact and God knows we’ve had enough of them already.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
i agree with coach E on Turner, he is a great OC, and only a decent coach, but with Kiffin you can’t say that yet cause he was a rookie coach last year. it was his 1st season in the NFL as a head coach.after some time like 2 or 3 more seasons you can evaluate him.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Bill, you are already starting to agree with me, just go back and read your posts!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Kiffin is a loser, I can see it in his eyes!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
And hear it in his tone!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Madden had NFL experience and a Cadillac team. Hall of Famers galore.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
I just watched the Raider Report, and they showed a clip of Wilson sacking Brady. I thought, “That is why we signed Wilson.”
May 13th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
you are a soul reader too.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
He has no confidence in his team, and therefore, himself!
Jus look up his acceptance interview and listen to him compared to intervies he did over the weekend. The guy is done!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Gruden also had considrable NFL EXP. OC for Eagles.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Where are all the great football minds in this room….
I have a question?
What are the odds of the Raiders winning the SuperBowl this season?
May 13th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Oakglenn - I’m certainly not putting Morrison down. Hes a good player but hes not dominant. Patrick Willis is better than Morrison after his 1st year, I’ll tell you that. Hopefully Morrison hasn’t hit a ceiling but maybe Morrison has only been as good as his defense will let him be with the current coaching thats in place. Biekert was a rock.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
coach i dont think you understand
i havent agreed with u until kiffin has a better record but i know they will go over 500 with kiffin
i said i would agree with u if they have a losing season like the same record dont twist my words
May 13th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
man, stick a fork in you, you are done.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
I’ll tell you…
They are the same as for any other team…..
One chance in 32
May 13th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
there you go with the over .500 again.
Way to set your goals high buddy!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
same odds of you being related to MR.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Coach Elkins- 1-32
May 13th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Peace out.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Just ask the Partiots how important just making the playoffs or finishing above .500 is?
The last game in February is all that matters.
It’s all we AS FANS should be discussing. How to get our team back on top!
PERIOD!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Willis is much more instinctual than Kirk unfortunately. Again, as you say, hopefully Kirk hasn’t hit his ceiling. I don’t think he has.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
coach wanna talk Xs and Os, fine. don’t say he is a looser cause you can see it in his eyes.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
well coach what do u hope for
i know a new coach
well they do have a new tv series coming out i want to be a head coach in the NFL
May 13th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Morrison is a stone cold stud….
Great against the run, and quick to read play action in the pass….
Really like the future of this kid…
He’s a rock inside!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
I said he was a decent OC, thats all you get. Right now, he is a losing Head Coach with a team that should have won 9 or 10 games last season!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Eyes, tone, and body language tell you all you need to know!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
I think Kiffin did a great job considering what he took over as a Head Coach. Shell had a ton of NFL experience and that sure as hell didn’t help him much when he returned. We were LUCKY to get 2 wins from him. For Kiffin to take a team that was beaten and battered down over the last 4 years and confused as all hell by the Shell/Walsh debacle, it was absolutely AMAZING for this team to reach 4 wins considering the new system, new coaching staff, McCown at QB, new blocking system and poor players.
Also factor in the fact that the defense didn’t live up to expectations and you have a recipe for disaster but Kiffin is bright and babied this team to 4 wins while letting the young and future players sit on the bench and learn so they could be ready for year 2. Along with that, we were fortunate to get coaches like Knapp, Rathman and Cable and the veteran coaching experience has helped tremendously in shaping this team together. I honestly have to say, with the new additions to the team and the fact that we’re in year 2, we have alot of potential and I believe Kiffin is the right man for the job.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
really coach you think so coach wow you know it all huh coach
May 13th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
won 9-10 games!!!!!!! put the pipe down.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
What show are you referring to BILL?
May 13th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
someone needs to take your pipe away, you are a danger to yousrelf and others.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Coach, the Pat’s and Fin’s are the only 2 teams in resent memory to go 16-0 during the regular season. Do I think the raiders can do that with the current squad….Hell no. Do I think that they have a real shot at 13-3, yes. With so many variables, qb play, run d, pass d, jano hitting kicks, etc, etc. They have just as good a shot as any other team in the league. Past records are out the window at the begining of each season. With the roster moves, another year of experiance for Kif….etc, I think they will be closer to 13-3 then 3-13. They couldn’t do that with out a coach!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Nice post Huff, but you are incorrect.
Kiffin has no loyalty, he’ll jump ship as soon as he can. Just like he did at USC. If he cared about his team, he would have stayed where he was, not tried to jump start his career with a team that was clearly ahead of his level. He had to kow with a father in the league he would no doubt receive an opportunity at some point in the League, but, he had to have it his way, and he bit the bait that Mr. Davis set in front of him, and he is paying for it now.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
http://www.easports.com/nflheadcoach09/home.jsp
This should be ALOT better than the original Head Coach game. They’ve changed things around and improved everything dramatically with different people making the game.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
9-10 games!!!!!!!!!!!!you really know what you are talking about, put the PS controler and the pipe down.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
pipe 1st.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
I do Bill…referring to football!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
coach are you a kiffin hater or a raider hater
May 13th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Hey Raider O, I love YOU!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Coach Elkins - I’m as incorrect as you my friend. Only time will tell as to what will truly happen and we just have to sit and watch to find out. Being Optimistic…I really think we’re going to have a good season based on our schedule and the improved team. Thats just me of course. We have potential to win 10 games but 8 games realistically.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
I am not a Kiffin hater, he simply will never in his NFL career win a Super Bowl, no matter how much talent he has.
Never!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Bill,
May 13th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
coach so who would u like to coach for the raiders
May 13th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Captain Kirk is a solid player with a ton of athleticism. If he’s going to the next level, it’s going to have to be a result of maturation above the shoulders. There’s no excuse for him being out of position so much.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Lets be realistic then Huff…
A football season has a mind of its own.
There is a team out there who believes more than the others, and they are the one that will win it all.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Blah…sorry.
Bill, Raider O - Don’t get too bothered. Remember, you won’t always agree with everyone. Just take it in stride.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
If Kiffin is a Raider, then it won’t be the silver and black.
Hold on, I gotta hit my pipe real quick!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Coach Elkins - Maybe…but they could also have more injuries than everyone else and BOOM!…their season changes.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Injuries are just an excuse….
You either do or you don’t….
May 13th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Raiders fans the one thing I know is that they should not have a problem at HB.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
I obviously want to win the Superbowl but I at least just want to see a successful team year in and year out. I’m so sick and tired of losing all the time. I’d rather see a competitive team on the field like the Gannon era. Its tough to win the Superbowl.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Coach Elkins - Injuries change the outlook of a whole team. You go from a talented squad to an average squad. Thats not an excuse, thats just a complete turn around of talent and you need it to win. You have to have reliability on the field. Thats why there are starters and bench warmers. Who do you think is going to lead your team to victory?
May 13th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Coash i told you, you in the wrong site.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Ice - We shall see on that one. Fargas (Injury Prone), Bush (Unknown) and McFadden (Rookie).
May 13th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Its a team sport, and in the NFL it has been forgotten.
Injuries are part of the game, and a team can win with them.
I’ll give you a Raider example.
Jim Plunkett!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
All the players are talented, they just all believe the hype when the hype is almost always BS!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Coach, i disagree with most of what you say. i respect your opinions, well, not the part about loving me.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
AKA
DAVID TYREE
May 13th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Eli Manning vs Tom Brady
impossible you say….
please!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
The Raiders winning the Super Bowl should be so much harder…
please!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Coach Elkins - Ok. And if Jim Plunkett never comes in, what happens?
May 13th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
It’s a dog fight, a war, and the best team wins it ever year assuming one of them isn’t cheating!
AKA the TUCK!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Why even talk about Kiffin leaving? Especially after 8-10 wins this year? Where else could he go and be in a better coaching situation? What team has more young top notch talent than us right now? I tell you what, There would be a line of coaches trying to coach the Russell/McFadden/Bush show.
8-10 wins without question! Have you non believers even looked at the schedule?
May 13th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
If a guy gets hurt, you replce him, you caoch him up, you don’t friggin dwell on it, you just work with it.
If you focus your attention on the problem, you’ll never find the solution!
May 13th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
The reason they have all this talent is cause they’re getting rid of Kiffin….
May 13th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
I almost drove off of the freeway today when listening to Sirius. Pat Kirwin and Tim Ryan took a call from a Raider fan asking for their opinion on the Raiders’ chance to compete for second in the division. Both hosts suggested that the Raiders should take second place if they can get in a good camp and keep the team relatively healthy. Kirwin went on to say that he could see the Raiders and Bills as the surprise teams of the year when the dust settles. All of this is predicated on JR playing efficient, and McFadden providing the impact he’s expected to bring. He believes McFadden is going to blow people away. Not because of speed, moreso his versatility. Kirwin feels like the raiders have enough “potential” on offense that will be almost impossible to cover. If the end result is a defense applying one guy to each player of offense then the raiders should score big. Again, assuming JR is efficient.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Have to teach the man something about loyalty!

Huff24 If Fargas can last as many games as he did last year I see him with 1500+ yards and Bush and McFadden are fresh and healthy they should not have any Injury problems. But all is not known so we will have to see what happens. I think Fargas will do great if starting every game. If he does then drafting McFadden will seem like a bad choice but the future if unknown to almost every body. So time will tell.

I should also say that he can see the Raiders throwing it all away if the OL falls apart. However, he is inclined to think that this won’t happen due to the coaching of Cable.

Kirwin???? Is he replacing Kiffin?
Ha ha

So, lets just start with the Broncos…
How are we gonna beat them!

Kirwin???? Is he replacing Kiffin?
Funny. He was rumored for the player personnel job last year wasn’t he? He actually has a good relationship with Kiffin so it doesn’t surprise me to hear him speak positively about the Raiders.

Makes sense…

Hey assassin, how are we gonna finish this upcoming season?
May 13th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
hey coach why not Matt Walsh
May 13th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Coach Elkins - Well, thinking about whether Kiffin will be gone or not doesn’t help this year at all. I’d prefer to look at the positives of this team and not worry about whether the Head Coach will be here or not. Thats like worrying whether people in your family will still be alive after the year. We just don’t know so why worry?

Ha ha…
What a fiasco that whole deal was….
All they want to talk about are the Rams tapes, deflecting the real issue.
Can’t really discuss that one…
haha

The broncos are going to be better than most think. They had a lot of injuries last year.
But the best way to beat them is to shut down the TE seam routes and eliminate travis henry. I’ll take our chances with Cutler throwing against our secondary.
I’m sure they’ll blitz the crap out JR so I would expect McFadden/Bush and Miller to have good games.

There are 3 kinds of people.
“People who watch things happen, people who make things happen, and people who don’t know what’s happening” -John Madden-
Which one are you!

Assassin - Thats the scary part. Kwame Harris NEEDS to be the real deal or we’re effed. We signed a RT that was HATED in Niner land and placed him at LT to be the protector of JR? It better work out.

for past 4 hours we havent said anything about our new names for bush and McF and hall and nnamd or morrison and howard and hartwell
May 13th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Coach Elkins - Considering I can’t do much to change the Raiders other than watch and support them, I must be one to watch things happen…thats all a fan can do.
May 13th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
the broncos have more problems on the D-line than we do.

Assassin, great post.
They also give away too much.
Their RB’s are at 7+ yards depth on all run and playaction pass plays. All drop back and others they are at 6.
Tell you what, we’re gonna beat the S*** outta them Broncos, I promise you that!
