Ryan gets big bucks

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 at 1:55 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders’ contract talks with running back Darren McFadden got a little more complicated because of the size of the deal struck by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

Ryan, according to the NFL Network, signed a six-year contract with $34.75 million in guaranteed money. That’s more money as the No. 3 overall pick than top pick Jake Long got from the Miami Dolphins ($30 million).

McFadden’s representatives, no doubt, will attempt to slot their pick somewhere just short of what Ryan got. They probably also took note that Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said Oakland was considering trading up to to take McFadden if they feared someone else was going to get him.

Ryan’s deal pays him more money than No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell got last year.

That Ryan might be the bust of the decade he’s already shaky and he’s gonna throw a lot picks to our guys when they come to Oakland.

  16. Quagmire'd Says:

Hey Ro Schem Bo, Al will have to give Stui Run-Run Jones’ old job…lol.

  17. Dakota Says:

McFadden should only receive a little more that what the player in his slot received last year. If his agent thinks he should get money close to what Ryan got, he should have to turn in his license.

Hold out here we come…Al, maybe you will have to cut some more guys to sign McFadden? May I suggest Rob Ryan?

  18. El Dirty Says:

We can’t afford that kind of money! The team can’t drop off that much from the total Ryan got! McFadden is going to want more aaaaaaaaagggggggghhhh!

    McFadden deserves what he wants

  23. El Dirty Says:

Spawn no he doesn’t! He deserves a DECENT salary. He has to earn #1 money.

  24. spawn Says:

    he could have her

In an uncapped year you can bet Al will offer up all our sisters.

  28. Dakota Says:

I wonder what Stu will say about the Raiders?

    Maybe:

“Oakland? Man, I loved it there. I mean, Rob Ryan let us have pizza parties and naps during team meetings and I never had to practice tackling or even angles of pursuit! Heck, it was a great work environment. Very little was expected of me and I performed up to Rob Ryan’s expectations! Everything was just fine till that little weasel Kiffin arrived and raised expectations. Rob went to bat for us after last season and tried to convince Al to let him be the head coach, but I guess Rob failed at that too. Oh well, I like Denver better anyhow.”

  29. RJRaider Says:

If you’re a draft pick and wanna get paid, go to the Falcons. They will pay top $$$!
As far as McFadden, odds are, he’ll get about $32 in guaranteed money after Atlanta’s horrendous deal.

  30. Sac Raider Says:

McFadden will get signed on time. If AD jumps all over giving one-leg Walker big money, DMC will get whatever his heart desires..

  31. RJRaider Says:

As far as McFadden, odds are, he’ll get about $32 MILLION in guaranteed money after Atlanta’s horrendous deal.

  32. spawn Says:

    for how many years

  33. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Look guys, who cares how much DMC gets? Al is the only owner to realize it big contracts mean SQUAT once the cap is gone. Thats why he is the visionary Al Davis, signing good players to backloaded contracts like he is printing money.

  34. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

    BaaaaaaaaaaaaVISIONARYALDAVISaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  35. El Dirty Says:

He is the man, but you pay the player to the slot he fell to. The Falcons are idiots to give Ryan that much money at 3. That obligates us to pay way more out of pocket! We were estimated to pay 10 million less than what Ryan received no we have to get closer to the deal he received. (what if he asks for more?) say goodbye to your favorite raiders! Raiders roster equals J-Mac and D-Mac and that’s all folks

  36. Dakota Says:

There will be a salary cap in place in 2011 or there will be no football…so how will all of these back loaded contract affect us then? Didn’t the 49ers do this in the 90s and eventually it caught up to them???

  37. Quagmire'd Says:

32M huh? According to my calculations, that’s more than JaMarcus got.

  38. El Dirty Says:

You hope there is a capless year. I’m going on right now not maybes

  39. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

No Dakota, they will play in 2011 without a cap. Likely to be a luxury tax as in baseball, and Al will be praised for loading up on talent BEFORE the uncapped years. There will be no more “dead money” if you cut an underperforming Walker, Kelly, etc.

Whether we WIN with the extra talent is another q…

  40. Dakota Says:

Hey, where is that poster that said Charlton Heston got what he deserved (Alzheimer’s and death) for dedicating his life to promoting guns? Don’t you have anything to say about Teddy Kennedy?

  41. raidersfanindonkeycountry Says:

I hope Stu starts in the AFC West somewhere, without williams here to miss blocks and stu wiffin’ Fargas and DMC are gonna break a bunch of long ones.

  42. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Speking of uncapped, can’t Al afford a decent dentist? His press conferences make me floss…

  43. gainesvilleraider Says:

that’s way too much, he hasn’t even played a preseason down yet. these dudes are running an f’in racket!

  44. Maryland Raiderfan Says:

Finally Stu gets cut and gets what he deserves!!!!!!!!
I am glad that i will not have to see him whiff on any more tackles. The d just got better!

  45. Chris in NY Says:

That contract is ludicrous. The only way it makes sense is if the non-guaranteed money isn’t that great. That’s probably the case since Ryan isn’t expected to be a problem with off-the-field issues, so the Falcons will likely pay him his full contract anyway unless he’s beyond atrocious.

  46. Alvis Whitted's Ghost Says:

Darren McFadden will be a damn rich rookie.

  47. spawn Says:

well we dont want what happen last season losing our 1st round more than half the season..
so we need to sign this kid now

  48. Alvis Whitted's Ghost Says:

Al Davis has a damn good dentist.

  49. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Charlton Heston? Dakota you’ve been sniffing too much Soylant Brown. Like most gun freaks, he was just compensating for his (real or imagined) undescended testicle.

  50. El Dirty Says:

Dakota is right these contracts are going to kill us in 3 yrs! I’m not happy I want to bitch! Don’t let the door hit you Stu… Oh why not! stand there sucka

  51. Dakota Says:

    Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:
    May 20th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
No Dakota, they will play in 2011 without a cap.

Wrong, there will be no cap in the 2010 season which ends in 2011, so again, there will be no football in the 2011-2012 season without a cap, so how will all of these prorated signing bonuses affect us when the new cap is put in place for the 2011-2012 season?

  52. El Dirty Says:

The Players Union is going to prevent the capless yrs to happen they are working on it right now

  53. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

You think there will actually be a lockout that lasts in 2011? Fat chance.

They will negotiate an agreement that does not include a cap, but helps the low-income teams with a luxury tax. The players will get the same free agency rights, and a guaranteed minumum amount of revenue. BUT there will be no limit to spending, just disincentives, and no dead money or salary cap hell.

  54. Scottish Raider Says:

WOW No1: I am staggered that the Falcons are paying Ryan that much. I thought they would cut a deal about $27m with a lot of performance bonus options (SuperBowl, ProBowl, etc.). $34m is just a vast over-payment for a QB with so much to prove and one with a performance ceiling way lower than JaMarcus. Brady Quinn must be spitting tacks - as he would have been graded higher than Ryan if leaving this year.

The Raiders will now struggle to hold McFadden below $30m - the best option may be to cut the guarantee in favour of some stellar bonuses.

WOW No2: A swift and unsentimental decision about Stu Schweigert. A truly nice guy, a 100% effort player and just an example of someone whose talent level was just that little too low for the NFL. This is not the time to criticise Stu. Lets thank him for the commitment and wish him well.

  55. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Wonder if AD is putting up anymore non-voting shares up for sale so he can sign McFadden?

  56. Dakota Says:

Keep in mind, the NFL owners usually come out on top in these things, so it is likely that the cap will actually be a smaller percentage of revenues than it is right now, so unless NFL revenues go way up, the cap is likely to actually get smaller…so again, how will these deals hurt us in years to come?

    Scottish, were are you?

  57. raidersfanindonkeycountry Says:

Hey Bo, Charlton Heston had more courage than you’ll ever have, keep the faith Raider Nation

  58. Dakota Says:

Where…ooops me English aint to gud.

  59. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

The NFLPA has had it WAY too good for years, when compared to other major sports. The owners know it and so does Al.

  60. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Charlton Heston was an ACTOR, with no measurable courage. Separate movies from reality, and go Raiders.

  61. El Dirty Says:

I honestly don’t think that will happen. parity in the NFL will desolve.

  62. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

The rookies are going to get their money now before a rookie salary scale kicks in like in the NBA.

  63. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Dakota, any cap will be similar to the NBA, meaning no dead money. There may be a yearly minimum and maximum, but each year will be independent. If Kelly or Walker suck, they are cut with no lingering financial consequences.

  64. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

    Anyone heard from Tommy Trojan?

  65. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

And the cap will NOT get smaller. The owners almost uniformly want to spend more and protect parity by spreading revenue to small market teams.

  66. Dakota Says:

    BSJ,

You think the owners are going to allow a capless league where high revenue owners can raise the market value of players, thereby allowing certain teams to accumulate all the talent and effectively ending the NFLs ability to claim parity and retain fan interest year in and out?

    Fat chance.

There will be a cap, and it will be a smaller percentage of gross revenue. There will also be a rookie salary cap. Maybe the NFL throws Upshaw a bone and grants more secure contracts for veteran players.

  67. El Dirty Says:

Hmmm NBA …. $5000 End Zone seats sounds great! (Crap)

  68. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

I can just here the conversation. “Stu, we wanted to tell you this in person, not by a 3rd party. Oh by the way, do you have your playbook?”

The four-year veteran got the news when he arrived for voluntary workouts on Tuesday. He was due to earn a base salary of $2.6 million in 2008, and $545,000 in 2009.

  69. 408RAIDER Says:

whats up nation good thing this post is about the falcons cuz i was trippin

  70. raidersfanindonkeycountry Says:

Sorry gang, this is a football blog, but a nerve was struck and I got sidetracked. Our RAIDAHS!!! are gonna kick some serious AFC West butt this year and also serve notice to the rest of the league…

  71. raidersfanindonkeycountry Says:

I am well aware of the difference between reality and the ficticious world of Hollywood Bo, Mr. Heston’s courage came from sticking by his convictions just as you have a right to voice your opinions, secured, by the way, by the second amendment and peolpe such as Charlton Heaston. Go Raiders loyal RAIDAHS fan!!

  72. raidersfanindonkeycountry Says:

And you’re right, you think Al could find a decent dentist!!

  73. El NegroyPlata Says:

Stu wasnt that bad, neither Sims. But honestly i dont gonna missed them.
The only bad thing of this, its Now whos gonna be guilty about all the bad things in the Nation.
The strongest candidates now are: Rob Ryan, Kwayne Harris, Robert Gallery, and maybe Michael Huff or Lane Kiffin.

  74. El NegroyPlata Says:

I forget to mention Terdel Sands, i think next year, all of us are going to hate that fat ass

  75. El NegroyPlata Says:

Also we are going to hate J. Walker and/or T. Kelly

  76. El NegroyPlata Says:

Bye, bye all stu jokes, hello t.sands jokes

  77. svduran1 Says:

This is where speed would have counted for something, like signing him before the Quarterback. It really ok though, he’s not a Quarterback. The money would fall no more than 10 percent above a straight line between 2 and 5. That’s it, sit out a year and you might make money next year from somebody else but McFadden will never get a full years pay back. So a generous offer would be 10 percent more than the 2 to 5 numbers.

  78. RIP Dan Birdwell Says:

    Ryan is a QB.

Everyone knows that QBs make more money than any other position.

Al Davis demonstrated last season that he would accept a holdout from the #1 overall pick rather than give in to the unreasonable demand that all “guaranteed” money be an option bonus. This was in marked contrast to the tradition of the Raiders signing their draft picks.

Ergo, McFadden’s agents are on notice that he’ll get a contract within reason, but not more. In his presser, McFadden was asked if he intended to be in camp on time, and he said that was his intention. When the followup came, asking whether he would instruct his agents to getthe deal done so he could be on the field, he said, “Yes, sir.”

  79. svduran1 Says:

    1. McFadden is not a Quarterback and shouldn’t think he’s going to get Quarterback money. 2. If McFadden is not a team player, it’s good we find out now. 3. The regular money is available but not the Ryan money, period. 4. McFadden will never make back a years pay if he sits out a year. 5. Getting a 33 next year to make up for it, is better than being held hostage.

  80. darkknight01 Says:

man..the dirty birds are stupid to pay ryan that much more than the #1 overall pick Long and more than JMarc last year. What is wrong with the ATL?? Weirdos…

  81. Raiderkoolaid Says:

Stupid Atlanta Falcons. Upsetting the salery structure when they could have just slotted him in somewhere between Dorsey and McFadden. What was he going to to, go play in the arena legue?

  82. Rick Says:

    Stu,

You gave it your best and that was not enough in Oakland. You played hard but also made some whiffs that forced the coaches to have you take a seat. It’s not all on you. The Raider D-line did’nt do you any favors, nor did some of the game plans. But the blame falls on you because the safety must make the play when others don’t. You know this. So do the fans. Learn from it. A fresh start elsewhere will do you much good. Thanks for your effort and good luck in the future.

  83. Jim (ct raider) Says:

Jerry: becareful w/headlines. I thought it was Rob Ryan!!!! I was thinking his only year of a good defense was when we had the worst offense in NFL history. Every team (except dumb ass steelers) ran because they didn’t want to chance a turnover. THey knew we couldn’t put up 10pts so why do anything risky. They scored on the first drive of every game at will and then went conservative. We thought Ryan did a good job. hahahahha

I do like him, personally, though.

    ILL RAIDER

  84. Jim (ct raider) Says:

I just read that sims wasn’t that bad. are you f’n kidding me. how about a 6 min drive, into opponent territory, all going well and then (whistle blows), “illegal procedure, number 65, OFFENSE. 1ST AND 20″ Good bye drive! or a 20 yard pass play, announcers say, but there is a flag down. Officials say, “holding, number 65, offense!” 1st and 25. GOd forbid he doesn’t hold and then you hear the announcer say, “down goes (add in qb name) for a 7 yard sack. BOy, (add in DE name) really came hard around the corner to crush (add in qb name). What a great defensive play!” Every DE who played against Sims has hall of fame numbers because of sims.

  86. Sabers Says:

    Three words: rookie salary cap.

This is beyond ridiculous, paying mega-salaries to kids who haven’t played a minute in the NFL yet. Somebody please stop this madness.

    G.

    “Pillaging just for fun”

  87. Jedi Raider Says:

What this means for us is if McFadden’s agents aren’t willing to do a reasonable deal based on a 5-10% increase in gauranteed money for the #4 guy last year, then we have to hold firm and let Chris Long sign at 2 and Glen Dorsey at 5 - that might involve waiting for lower picks to start signing - McFadden might be a holdout for a week or two - he was arguably the biggest name/best talent in the draft, so we’re going to have deal with the “hype premium” as well. I’d rather he held out for a month then pay him based on Atlanta’s desperate deal with that no talent a## clown Matt Ryan. What a stupid franchise - just say no - wait for the others to sign around you and work from there. We should have been golden with the number 1 only taking 30 million and already being under contract - this should have been quick and painless.

  88. gdamac Says:

Ryan = overrated, and he stole JaMarcus’s number, I hope he is playing when we play Atl, unless our defense sucks.

  89. raidersfanindonkeycountry Says:

Good luck to Chris Carr with the titans, his comments about not winning a lot of games in Oakland is kind of strange though since he contributed to all those losses at least the 3 years he was here.

  90. darkknight01 Says:

thats why ONE OF MAIN REASONS the owners opted out of the CBA is to get a freakin rookie salary cap…pronto!

  91. SuperBad Says:

So what the heck was Lane thinking then?!?! Say that stuff AFTER he’s signed.

  92. BleedingOrangenBlue Says:

Spend more and more and more money on so called “talented” peeps. You guys are the Jokes of the NFL. Another 4-12 year for the one eyed pirate hookers. Sorry Faider Nation.
